Visit The Abandoned Village, Kuldhara

About 15 kilometres away from Jaisalmer is an abandoned Indian village, which narrates inspiring and fascinating tales. This destination is known as Kuldhara. The village, which looks more like a town, was once known for its large population. Travellers who wish to imagine a world through its ruins are recommended to visit the abandoned village of Kuldhara.

The streets here were wide and designed beautifully, the settlement here was planned. Aesthetics were kept in mind when it came to construction of this village. Though abandoned now, earages, temples, step wells and other structures were constructed here in large numbers.

While travelling through this abandoned village, tourists will hear the legend that describes why villagers left this settlement. According to this legend, the minister of the ruling kingdom was evil and wished to marry the younger daughter of a village chief. He forced him to give her in marriage and gave him a deadline. Scared, the chief called upon a meeting of chiefs from 84 villages located nearby and it was decided that the entire population of Kuldhara would leave, so that the honour of the chief’s daughter could be protected.

Today, this story is reflective of the fact that chiefs and Rajput warriors during those times kept their honour at the highest level. Their respect and self esteem was so important that an entire village decided to leave their homes and settle elsewhere so that the young daughter of the chief could be protected from the evil clutches of the minister from the ruling kingdom. This indicates how valiant Rajasthani people are.

Today the ruins of this village are a tourist site, giving travellers the opportunity to think and understand what happened centuries ago.

Pray at Tanot Mata Temple

Situated at a distance of 122 kilometers from Jaisalmer fort, this temple is considered as a reincarnation of Goddess Hinglaj. There are many stories shrouded around this temple during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1965, stories reciting that the temple stood unharmed even after being under attack with heavy bombs and shelling and it is one of the things to do in Jaisalmer. Visit the Salim Singh ki Haveli

This Haveli is slightly different from the other Havelis in terms of art and sculpture. The roof of this Haveli has been built in the form of a peacock. At the entrance of the Haveli, there are tuskers made of sand stones guarding the haveli.

This haveli has 38 balconies and each balcony has its own artistry. The name given to this Haveli is Jahaz mahal because of the front of the haveli resembling ship stern. Thrillophilia recommends a visit to this Haveli to see how beautiful art can be.

The other name given to this Haveli is the “mansion of brocade merchants” because the Patwa family used to deal in gold and silver.

The Tazia tower is a 5-storied structure where each story has significance in its own. On each floor there is a balcony that is famous for their individual designs. This tower was built by Muslim craftsmen and is based on the shape of Tazia; which is actually the replica of Mausoleum of various Imams. This haveli that once used to be the prime minister’s house is today, still partly inhabited. It has derived its origin from the late 19th century and has extraordinary exterior, dripping with carvings. The 1st floor of the haveli has some beautiful paintings that are made using 1.5kg of gold leaf. Apparently, the left and right wings were the work of two brothers-Hathi and Lulu. The competitive spirit in them apparently produced this virtuoso work. If you closely observe, the two sides are similar, however not identical.

There are pictures engraved on pillars and walls that consist of horses, cattle, and depiction of flora among many other things. Lodrawa, also known as Lodurva or Lodarva is a village in Jaisalmer district of state Rajasthan in India. It is 15 kilometres to the north-west of the popular city Jaisalmer. Day Trip to Longewala War memorial and Tanot Temple | Rajasthan | Travel And Trekking

Longewala is a border town  in the western part of the Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan, India. And the reason we choose to visit Longewala border post on the very first day of our Rajasthan trip is for its notable location in the Battle of Longewala during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

Our Journey started from the  Jaisalmer Railway station early in the morning .We took the Ramgarh Road route .It took us around 2 hours to cover the distance of 124 km for reaching the border outpost of Longewala .

We would have hardly gone few kilometers and our empty stomach went rumbling .So we made a small stop over for our Breakfast at Milan Restaurant on Gadisar Road  .This place literally has the best Dal Makhani, oriental soup, and Chana Chaat I have ever had tasted .After our sumptuous breakfast we headed on .

In another hour or so we reached  the small town of Ramgarh  .From there the whole geography of the place took a sudden change . The trees gave way to the deserts .Few vegetation mainly wild grasses and shrubs could only be seen ,apart from few wild asses and some mud houses . Both sides of the road to Longewala  were potted with rows of meticulously lined huge windmills which were the only other man made structures that could be seen.

It was 11 O’clock on my wrist watch with temperature hovering outside at brazing 32 degrees we reached Longewala border post. We parked our rented car at the visitor’s parking bay area and headed towards the Longewala Border War museum.

Longewala , is an important and strategic border post which is just 15 kms away from the International border , .No doubt why this place looked more like an fortified fort with heavy military presence than a small village outpost . Identity proof were checked at the Entry check post .

Through the Entry Point we walked cross the BP 638 pillar to reach the War memorial compound .The defeated Patton tank that was on display at the entrance to the ‘Longewala War Memorial’ was a welcoming sight .

It is here a Company  of 2000 Pakistan army personnel along with a tank brigade faced a humiliating defeat from a Indian detachment comprising of only 80 soldiers and officers .It is wherein ,on that fateful night over 179 Pakistani soldiers were killed or wounded and 37 Pakistani tanks were destroyed.

The war memorial also has a state-of-the-art audio visual theater for screening the movies on the battle of Longewala which also includes an interview with Major (Retd) Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, recipient of second highest war gallantry award , Maha Vir Chakra award who commanded the sector during Battle of Longewala. It was under his able leadership Pakistani thrust was defeated .The short film can be watched for a nominal fee of Rs 25 .

We then moved towards the bunkers area near to the war museum and happily clicked few pictures as memories of our trip .

after trolling for around 2 hours in and around the war Memorial ,we left Longewala via Sadewala village towards Tanot Mata Mandir .The distance to reach Tanot temple is around 80 kms away and the drive took us an hour to reach Tanot Mata temple . Then, the Sun overhead was at its full afternoon glory and temperature must have peaked more than 40 degrees .

Tanot Mata Temple is a historical temple at the Longewala border and its deity Tanot Mata is believed to be the incarnation of Goddess Hinglaz . The Village is close to the border with Pakistan and is very close to the battle site of Longewala  .

The Temple has many legends associated . One of them is from the 1965 Indo-Pak war . During the war, Pakistani Army dropped more than 3000 bombs targeting this temple but not even one exploded near its vicinity .  In the vicinity ,the village succumbed to the severe bombarding but the temple survived ,without a scratch .None of those bombs could explode. These are now on display at the temple peripheral complex.

After the war was over ,the management of the temple was handed over to Border Security Force of India, on their request .This is the place where spiritual strength of BSF and its un-wearing commitment to safeguard the mother land was seen side by side.

Twice in a year i.e. in April and Sept Navratri  is celebrated at Tanot where free lunger is run by BSF as well as free Medical camp. Thousands of devotees from every nook and corner of the country throng the temple to offer their prayer to goddess. The temple premises has got modernized recently and it now also has an full fledged canteen facility open for public to have refreshments .

Best time to visit Longewala

The best time to visit Longewala is between the months of November and January when the temperature is low .

Longewala is well connected with superb roadways and airways. The nearest domestic airport is at Jaisalmer which is at 124 kms from Longewala. Jaisalmer also serves as the last stop for the western Railways. From there you will need to either Hire a Private vehicle or will have to rely on your vehicle. Travel Guide: Is Jaisalmer Worth Visiting? [2023]

Located in the northwestern corner of India near the Pakistan border, Jaisalmer is a city filled with history and a rich heritage. It used to be the stomping grounds of royalty, and some parts of the city still resemble its previous esteem.

While this is true, Jaisalmer is a bit of a hike from just about anywhere else you would plan to visit in India. Even the closest cities in Rajasthan are between 5-10 hours away by car.

This post is going to lay out all you need to know about planning a Jaisalmer trip, as it can be a pretty tricky place to visit. This is especially true if you are unfamiliar with traveling around India or other buzzing southern Asian countries!

Is Jaisalmer Safe to Visit?

Jaisalmer is located in the northwestern corner of India, just a stone’s throw from the border with Pakistan. As India and Pakistan do not share the friendliest of histories, this border has been a bit touchy at times, to put it lightly. When visiting Jaisalmer, the biggest concern is absolutely an escalation at the border, at least from what locals told me during my time there.

We visited Jaisalmer with a toddler and felt relatively comfortable throughout our visit.

Jaisalmer is a big military city in India because of this border. There is a big Indian Army base, and the airport is actually predominantly used as a military airport. While the increased military forces provide a great layer of safety, their presence definitely does make the place feel a bit more dangerous than it probably is.

In my own experience, Jaisalmer is as safe of a place to visit as anywhere else in Rajasthan. Like any Indian city, there is always a risk of pickpocketing and scamming, but there aren’t really any other risks unique to Jaisalmer aside from its proximity to the border.

We visited Jaisalmer with a toddler and felt relatively comfortable throughout our entire visit. As long as you are comfortable walking past pesky vendors and hecklers and you avoid the street food and tap water, you should be fine.

Best Things to Do in Jaisalmer

1. go luxury desert camping.

By far, the best thing to do in Jaisalmer is going camping at a luxury desert camp. These camps are situated between 45 and 75 minutes into the desert outside of Jaisalmer, and they are loaded with unforgettable experiences. From going on a jeep safari or a camel safari to experiencing local folk dance around a campfire at night, the top camps in Desert National Park are absolutely worth visiting.

The camp we stayed at taught us all about folk music, local musical instruments, local cuisines, and ancient desert culture. Our post on desert camping outside of Jaisalmer contains everything you need to know about to plan an amazing experience, including which cultural events and experiences to prioritize during your stay.

While the city is regarded as the main destination, there is no better way to learn about the local culture and the local cuisine of the desert region than being in the desert itself.

2. Explore the Famous Jaisalmer Fort

The 12th century Jaisalmer Fort is easily the most popular tourist destination in all of Jaisalmer. In fact, its color is largely what gives Jaisalmer its reputation as the Golden City of India. The Jaisalmer Fort has been occupied since Medieval times, and it is still occupied by thousands of people today, earning the classification of a living fort.

The fort is unique, as it is like an entire section of the city. While many forts are just historical complexes that you tour, the Jaisalmer Fort is alive and bustling, much like it would have been hundreds of years ago. From the Fort Palace Museum to many rooftop restaurants and one of the prettiest Jain Temples in Rajasthan, the Jaisalmer Fort is easily one of the city’s top places to see.

3. Visit the Ruins of Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh is a complex of ruined royal cenotaphs about 20 minutes outside of the city. The cenotaphs are made of local yellow sandstone, and while the complex is not a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it sure feels like one. Just about any organized Jaisalmer tour will include a stop at Bada Bagh, and you can tour the whole place in under an hour.

4. Catch a Sunrise at Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is a small lake located just to the east of the city. This is a great place to catch a sunset, and the structures built around the lake are very pretty. There are also several restaurants and small shops here that can be visited if you have some extra time to kill, but there are much better options for both shopping and dining in the city itself. The main reason to visit Gadisar Lake is just to catch a sunset or go for a quick boat ride.

How To Get to Jaisalmer

Driving to jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer is pretty distant from most other places you’ll visit in India, and driving to it can be impractical depending on your circumstances. The nearest major Rajasthani city, Jodhpur, is 5 hours away by car. After that, it’s about 5 more hours to get to the other nearby major cities of Jaipur and Udaipur. From Delhi , Jaisalmer can be reached in about 12 hours by car if you don’t stop.

As we were traveling with a toddler, we didn’t plan on driving the long distances to or from Jaisalmer. We planned to fly from Delhi to Jaisalmer, and then from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. Unfortunately, our flight to Udaipur was canceled and there was no good alternative heading out for several days.

As we were short on time and had reservations in Udaipur, we decided to book a van with Lucky Tours and Travels , which was recommended by the host at our luxury desert camp. The driver picked us up in a large van and drove us safely to Udaipur. The service was exceptional, the vehicle was new and clean, and the driver was very friendly despite having to pick us up at the crack of dawn and drive us 10 hours through the desert.

Lucky Tours and Travels operates all throughout Rajasthan and is a great option if you are looking for a transportation company. I can provide a contact number if you need one!

Flying to Jaisalmer

We flew from New Delhi to Jaisalmer, and it was quite an adventure. Jaisalmer Airport (JSA) is very small, and there are not many flights into or out of it each day. There were only a couple of flights each day between Delhi and Jaisalmer, and our initial flight was delayed 36 hours. Unfortunately there isn’t really another nearby city to fly into and then transit to Jaisalmer, as the next-closest airport is over 5 hours away in Jodhpur.

Once we finally got on the plane, the flight was a smooth hour and a half. There is only one baggage claim, so you can expect to get your checked bags within 10-15 minutes of landing. Don’t plan on eating at the airport, as the airport literally has nothing to offer other than a bathroom and a baggage claim.

The airport sits about 20 minutes outside of the city, and there are often taxi drivers sitting outside waiting. To avoid the need to negotiate, we prearranged a taxi with Rajasthan Royals Holidays . Most taxis in India do not use a meter, and as we don’t speak any Hindi, negotiating can be a tall task.

How To Get Around Jaisalmer

Tuk-Tuks in Jaisalmer (Auto Rickshaw)

Getting around India can be very difficult, especially if you are not used to traveling in southern Asia. As we first learned in Chittagong, Bangladesh , the traffic is wild, and the most popular means of transportation within a city is actually by tuk-tuk.

Tuk-tuks are small, three-wheeled motorbikes with an enclosed cab for passengers. They are very popular, as they can weave efficiently through traffic jams and ultimately get you where you want to go faster. They aren’t the most comfortable or safe vehicles around, but they are definitely the best way to get from point A to point B.

As with any taxi in Jaisalmer, you will need to negotiate a rate and pay in cash. You should be able to get just about any ride for 100 rupees ($1.25) or less if you negotiate hard enough.

Ridesharing in Jaisalmer

There is no Uber or Ola in Jaisalmer. To get around, you will need to hire a traditional taxi or a private driver, like the ones mentioned in the next section.

Taxis in Jaisalmer

Other than Tuk-Tuks, cars and taxis are easily the most popular way to get around Jaisalmer. While taxis are everywhere, it is easier to just hire a private driver if you plan on exploring the city. Prices are very affordable, and having a driver available to you at all times can really come in handy.

It can be difficult to find trustworthy drivers when traveling in India, and I feel comfortable recommending Rajasthan Royals Holidays for your transportation within Jaisalmer. While the cars they sent for us had definitely seen better days and the driver didn’t know much English, the prices were good, the service was on time, and the company has an English-speaking Whatsapp number that can be contacted at any time.

As a note, I do not share any affiliation with either Rajasthan Royals Holidays or Lucky Tours and Travel, and I earn no form of compensation for recommending their services. Rajasthan Royals Holidays sent a driver to pick us up at the airport and take us to our luxury camp in the desert, and then later in the week they picked us up at the camp, drove us to a couple of popular tourist sites, and dropped us off at our hotel in the city. Lucky Tours and Travel drove us all the way from Jaisalmer to Udaipur .

How Many Days Should You Visit Jaisalmer?

Jaisalmer is a pretty small city, and there really isn’t all that much to see. Jaisalmer city and its top things to do can all be visited in a day or a day and a half. The Golden Fort, Bada Bagh, and Gadi Sagar Lake are all within 30 minutes of each other, and can easily be visited in the same day.

If you plan on visiting one of the luxury desert camps in the Sam sand dunes, or at least going on a desert safari, I recommend visiting for three days. This is enough time to thoroughly experience all the entire city of Jaisalmer, at least at a tourist level.

The Best Time to Visit Jaisalmer

The best season to visit Jaisalmer is absolutely the winter months. The winter season is the busy season in the area, due to the much more comfortable weather. The desert heat of the summer season can be unbearable, and the daytime temperatures between October and March are very pleasant.

Many popular tourist amenities, including many of the best places to stay in the desert, shut down during the summer months, too.

We visited at the end of January, and while the nights were certainly cold, the daytime weather was perfect.

Is Jaisalmer Worth Visiting?

Visiting a desert city offers a lot of unique experiences, and these experiences are the main reason to visit Jaisalmer. If you plan on going glamping in a luxury desert camp outside of Jaisalmer, then spending a day or two in Jaisalmer beforehand or afterward is worth doing.

Desert camping is a really great experience, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. There is nowhere better in India to do it than in the heart of Thar Desert right outside of Jaisalmer!

However, on its own, I would not say that Jaisalmer is worth visiting. As a city, we found it to be excessively dirty and underwhelming. The fort was very nice, but the area surrounding the fort was a real letdown for us.

If you aren’t going to camp in the desert, visiting Jaisalmer on its own isn’t worth the trip.

We initially had budgeted two full days to explore the city of Jaisalmer, and our 36-hour flight delay eliminated one of them. While we were initially upset about that, we were very grateful in hindsight, as an extra day at our nice hotel in Delhi was much more valuable to us than a second day in Jaisalmer.

All in all, I don’t recommend going out of your way to visit Jaisalmer. I only recommend visiting it if you plan on also going desert camping (which I DO highly recommend doing). Without desert camping, Jaisalmer is pretty underwhelming and is not worth the significant hassle it takes to get there in the first place.

Jaisalmer Travel Guide: Visiting the Jewel of India’s Thar Desert

Today I’m picking favourites and I have no qualms about it. We spent a whole month travelling across India – 7 destinations in total – but the one that I’m still thinking about is Jaisalmer. This Jaisalmer travel guide will show you what makes this place so special!

Located in the Thar Desert just 30 kilometres from the border with Pakistan means that getting to Jaisalmer was quite the journey – 18 hours by train from Delhi to be precise! – but it was worth it in the end to explore the famed Golden City.

We had a total of 3 days here and I would have gladly stayed a week if the rest of Rajasthan hadn’t been calling, so here’s a little glimpse at why I enjoyed visiting Jaisalmer so much and how you can too.

Your Jaisalmer Travel Guide:

Get lost inside Jaisalmer Fort

The main attraction in this city is Jaisalmer Fort, but believe me when I tell you that this is a place you’re going to want to revisit time and time again.

I made it to Jaisalmer Fort three days in a row and I managed to see something new on each visit. The layout of the city makes the place feel like a bit of a maze, which means you can always get lost in a new direction.

Narrow, twisting alleys break away from the main road, leading you up and down crooked staircases, and then every once in a while these will spit you out along the fort’s outer walls where you can see across the city and off into the desert .

There is also no shortage of rooftop restaurants, so be willing to climb the extra three or four flights of stairs to enjoy a drink with a view, and then give your legs a break!

Shop for Rajasthani souvenirs

Oh, the shopping! There is a reason why my suitcase gained a few extra pounds in Jaisalmer. Certain sections of the fort are like a bazaar where you can find all sorts of little treasures . So what exactly did we find?

Well, Sam and I purchased a total of four wall hangings; my favourite was a white canvas with quotidian scenes embroidered in rainbow colours. We also picked up a few pillow covers with elephant designs in gold, pink, and blue. And aside from that, I came across an artist who paints bird and flower motifs on old weathered postcards with Hindi writing, so I picked up a small collection which I’d like to frame at some point.

I was also tempted by peacock doorknobs, carved statuettes and antique masks, but I had to draw the line somewhere! Suffice it to say that if you enjoy shopping, you’ll love Jaisalmer’s offerings.

Visit the Jain Temples

While wandering through Jaisalmer Fort, we also came across the Jain Temples. These structures date back to the 12th and 15th centuries and like most of the buildings you’ll find in the city, these too are made of yellow sandstone.

You may be tempted to walk past them especially if there’s a large tour group gathered outside, but trust me, it’s worth going in to see the craftsmanship. While the temples are relatively simple from the exterior, once you set foot inside you’ll enter a world of intricate stone carvings that carry your eyes from floor to ceiling.

Admission tickets can be purchased in the small square directly across from the temples . Just keep in mind that because these temples are active places of worship, they are only open to visitors from 8 in the morning until noon, so you’ll want to plan your visit accordingly.

Admire all the havelis

Haveli is the word used for old mansions found across India and Jaisalmer has a few worth seeking out!

Patwon ki Haveli: This is the most famed haveli in Jaisalmer. It is also the largest haveli in the city, but that being said, it’s a combination of 5 structures. The building was commissioned by Guman Chand Patwa, who was a wealthy jewelry trader, and because he had 5 sons he ordered the construction of 5 stories, one for each of his children.

Nathmalji ki Haveli: This haveli was built as the residence of the then Prime Minister of Jaisalmer, Diwan Mohata Nathmal. The construction was carried out by two brothers who had a bit of a competitive edge. They both started building simultaneously at opposite ends and struggled with uniformity, which meant the building ended up having a bit of an irregular shape.

Salim Singh ki Haveli:  This next one is nicknamed the Peacock Haveli. This 300-year-old structure was built on top of an even older haveli, and it is still occupied today by a descendant of its original owner.

Speaking of havelis, you can’t miss the Jaisalmer Fort Palace Museum & Heritage Center, which was a former royal residence. You can do an audio tour, but I was happy to just wander around and take pictures.

And since we’re on the topic of architecture, if you come with a bit more time or are feeling particularly ambitious, you can also visit Bada Bagh, which is a complex north of Jaisalmer that contains royal cenotaphs (empty tombs) that look like dome-shaped pavilions. I didn’t get to visit this place but it looks beautiful in photos.

Go camel trekking in the Thar Desert

This Jaisalmer travel guide wouldn’t be complete without mentioning camel trekking, after all, the city is located in the Thar Desert! There are two popular offerings that you can find across the town. The first is a sunset tour that involves driving out to the desert, doing a camel safari, having a fire-cooked dinner, and doing a bit of stargazing. The second option includes all of the above but also involves spending the night in the desert, typically sleeping outdoors around a campfire using mats and a sleeping bag.

Longer tours can be arranged – my husband Sam did a 4-day camel safari when he visited a few years back – but if you’re not into camping, then the sunset tour can give you a taste of what that’s like.

Another alternative to the camel safari is spending the night in a desert camp . These range from simple tented camps geared at backpackers to luxury tented camps that will make you feel like you’re glamping with the royals.

Take a boat ride on Gadisar Lake

Gadisar Lake is a manmade lake that was built in the 14th century in order to deal with the population’s water needs – because when  you live in the desert, water is a major concern!

Today the lake is a popular spot with visitors as you can rent paddle boats to take you out on the water. The lake’s shore is lined with temples and pavilions (some of them are even out on the water), so it’s quite scenic, especially at sunset.

Stay in a haveli-inspired hotel

If you want to feel like royalty, you need to book yourself into a haveli. We stayed at the Tokyo Palace Hotel  and loved it!

I know the name is a bit of a geographic mismatch, but that aside, it’s a really cool property. The hotel was built in the haveli-style, which means you get a bit of Old World charm with all the modern conveniences.

We stayed in the Deluxe Room which runs you about $22 USD per night, and my favourite feature was the day bed, because check out that window! They also have 6-bed dorms starting out at $2 so there really is something for every budget .

Another thing that I loved about this hotel is that their rooftop allowed us to catch the sun rising over the desert and it was pure magic every morning. The sun rose with a bold and fiery intensity painting the sky deep shades of mauve and lavender, and most mornings a small group of guests would gather together to watch it quietly.

If that hotel is fully booked, you can find similar style accommodations at: Hotel Garh Jaisal Haveli , Hotel Helsinki House , or Hotel Pleasant Haveli . These are some of the top-rated haveli-style hotels in Jaisalmer.

And that’s a little taste of Jaisalmer. I hope these photos sparked your interest in the city; it’s a long way to get there, but to me, Jaisalmer is the jewel of the Thar Desert, so go!

When I went to India, Oh, such a long time ago, I really enjoyed the Jaisalmer experience. I had already been camel trekking in Egypt, so wasn’t a complete novice (Ay!), but I had camel ice-cream too.

Built entirely in yellow sandstone, these multi-story Havelis serve as beautiful examples of Rajasthani royal architecture. Within the complex, you’ll discover approximately 60 balconies or jharokhas, each uniquely designed, showcasing a remarkable fusion of Indian and Persian styles. Additionally, the complex boasts numerous expansive courtyards, making it a paradise for photographers.

Presently, of the five Havelis, two are under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India, two are owned by the Guman Chand Patwa family, and one has been transformed into a private museum by the Kotharis.

Interestingly, the construction of this grand mansion began simultaneously from two different points by these two brothers.

Our trip started with us reaching Jaisalmer in the afternoon and checking into Marriott.

The first day, whatever time we had was spent at Amar Sagar lake.

The sunset point near Café Kaku is worth going to the lake for.

The other side of it.

Another view that was worth dying for was the Night View of the city from the Jaisalmer fort.

The food at Café Panorama added whatever was missing to the night sky. The rest of the night was spent chilling at the hotel. If you are with the right company, even staying back at the hotel and chilling can be fun.

Next morning, we again go back to the fort for Sunrise and explore the other parts of the fort.

After this, we had planned the visit to Jaisalmer border and luckily, managed to obtain the permission to visit Pillar number 609, also called the longewala war memorial.

By the evening, we were back to the hotel and later, we enjoyed some local shopping at the bazaars that were an amazing reflection of the cultural heritage that is Rajasthan

On Day 3, we visited Haveli and Bada Bagh on our way to the Sam Sand Dunes.

Mirchi Vada and Dal Baati are the Rajasthani specialties that you must try from the locally available options in the city.

Around 3 pm, we checked into Rojani Resort and had lunch at one of their most famous restaurants, The trio. What followed after was something we didn’t expect.

The evening Dessert Safari we took, literally took our breath away and was a journey of a lifetime.

After that ride, we got another grand ride on the ship of the dessert, the camel. The scenic beauty of the dunes multiplied in the night when the resort had planned a night of cultural folk- dance and Rajasthani food under the stars.

Last night’s safari inspired our morning safari on Day 4, to a secluded part of the dessert.

After the adventure safari and some more adventure activities nearby, we left for Jodhpur.

The road trip to Jodhpur is one of the best drives you could ever witness in your life. Also, the Jaisalmer War Memorial on the way is something worth seeing.

Although, make sure to carry your cards as it does not accept any cash. We reached Jodhpur in late evening and did some local shopping there as well. As for accommodation, the best five-star property in Jodhpur is the Taj Hari Mahal Hotel, which is where we stayed.

The next day was full of Jodhpur-darshan for us. We went to Umaid Bhavan Palace and Museum.

We could not have asked for a better end to the trip. This five-day trip costed somewhere around 25k and gave us a lifetime worth of memories to cherish.

Day 1 of 3 Days in Jaisalmer Itinerary

8 am: breakfast @ cafe cavalli.

Cafe Cavalli with its amazing setting is among the best cafes in Jaisalmer.

It’s a perfect place to get a hearty breakfast and a good cup of coffee to start your morning off right.

The food is toothsome, and the view of the fort is fantastic.

9 am: Jaisalmer Fort (Jain Temples and Tazia Tower)

One of the topmost things to do in Jaisalmer in 3 Days has to be to explore the majestic mud fort, Jaisalmer Fort.

The city’s most adored landmark is also known as  Sonar Qila (Golden Fort). Looking at the yellow sandstone fort during the sunset, you’d know why it’s called so!

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the fort is one of the last remaining living forts in the world.

The fort houses over one-fourth of the city’s population within its walls. It’s, in fact, a hodgepodge of homes, temples, bazaars, shops, hotels, restaurants, and cafes.

Exploring Jaisalmer Fort is one of the most culturally immersive experiences in India .

It’s fun getting lost in the maze of alleyways inside the fort and chancing upon the gems.

Gopa Chowk and Dussehra Chowk are two important courtyards where you can find vibrant shops, nice cafes, local artists presenting traditional music and dance performances, and entertaining tourists with a puppet show.

12 pm: Pyaaz ki Kachori at Dhanraj Ranmal Bhatia Sweets

It’s time to take your taste buds on a joy ride. Gorge on the most famous snack in Jaisalmer, pyaaz ki kachori (onion fritters) at Dhanraj Ranmal Bhatia Sweets .

12:30 pm: Salam Sing Ki Haveli

Commissioned in 1815 by Salam Singh, the erstwhile prime minister of Jaisalmer is a crumbling yet beautiful piece of architecture.

Inspired by a dancing peacock, its arched roof gives the appearance of a peacock.

The Haveli is divided into two parts – a part is occupied by the descendants of Salam Singh while another portion is converted into a shop and museum.

As it’s a private residence(not managed by ASI), a resident guides the visitor for a small amount of fee.

Moti Mahal, located on the top floor, is the most beautiful room in the haveli.

It’s where the homeowner and his guests used to enjoy dance and music performances.

1 pm: Nathmalji Ki Haveli

The former residence of the then prime minister of Jaisalmer, Diwan Mohata Nathmal, the haveli was designed by two Muslim jewelers (yes, surprisingly they weren’t builders) brothers who built their respective sides (left and right) that look similar but have differences if observed closely.

It’s a private property inhabited by the descendants of Nathmal and you can only admire the structure from outside or at most visit the ground floor courtyard that houses a tourist shop.

Opening Timings: 10 am to 7 pm daily

1:30 pm: Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon Ki Haveli or Mansion of Brocade Merchants is a remarkable historical piece and a fine example of traditional Rajasthani architecture. It also is

The most impressive and elaborate among all the Havelis in Jaisalmer, Patwon Ki Haveli is a group of five mansions (one for each of his 5 sons) commissioned by a rich Marwari merchant called Guman Chand Patwa in 1805 and completed over a period of 55 years.

Built with yellow sandstone, the multiple-storey mansions have incredible latticed carvings and over 60 jharokhas (balconies).

Each haveli comprises a huge courtyard enclosed by rooms and arched doors and windows. 

Out of 5 Havelis, 2 are operated by the Archeological Survey of India, 2 are occupied by the family of Guman Chand Bapna, and 1 is bought and managed by Kotharis.

Now the two of them are open to tourists wherein one is converted into a private museum called Kathori’s Patwa Haveli Museum after its owner, Jeevanlalji Kothari, and the other one is kept in its original form (not well-maintained and inhabited by pigeons and bats) and is managed by ASI.

Kathori’s Patwa Haveli Museum with intricate carvings, exquisite mirror work, amazing paintings, exceptional artwork, and ancient exhibits is definitely worth your time and money and a must-visit for all, especially history and art lovers.

A visit here literally takes you back in time!

Once you are done exploring the museum, make your way to the terrace for the stunning views of the fort.

5:30 pm: Sunset @ Gadisar Lake

Commissioned in 1400 AD by Maharwal Gadsi Singh to deal with the shortage of water in the region, Gadisar Lake is a perfect spot to spend some quiet time in Jaisalmer thanks to its cool and calm surroundings.

The banks of the lake feature beautifully carved chhatris (cenotaphs), temples, and holy shrines.

The intricately carved yellow sandstone arched gateway called Tilon Ki Po l marks the entrance of the lake.

It looks mesmerizing during sunrise and sunset.

The lake turns into a magical place as the setting sun spreads its orange and red hue on its waters.

No surprise that it’s the favorite sunset spot in the city. And a favorite photoshoot spot too.

You can paddleboat and rowboat the waters of the lake, spot the migratory birds, enjoy the view of the majestic fort bathed in the last rays of the sun, take a refreshing walk around the lake, or just sit and relax and watch the sun go down.

Day 2 of 3 Days in Jaisalmer Itinerary

9 am: breakfast @ the wanderlust cafe & restaurant.

The Wanderlust Cafe & Restaurant is a cozy and lovely place with a rooftop setting that affords a view over the city and the fort. We had a delish breakfast here!

10:30 am: Lodurva

Just about 7 km from the city of Jaisalmer lies the ancient capital of Bhatti Rajputs – Lodurva. The village isn’t just known for being the old capital of Bhatis but pulls travelers from around the world for its architectural ruins and Jain Temples.

The main temple in the complex is Parshvanath Jain Temple . As the name suggests, it’s dedicated to Lord Parshvanath, the 23rd Jain Tirthankar.

Made out of yellow sandstone, the exterior, as well as the interior of the temple, showcases exceptional works of art.

It certainly exhibits a fine example of intricate craftsmanship.

Other temples in the complex are Ajitanath Jain Temple, Rishabhnath Jain Temple, Shambhavnath Jain Temple

The temple complex also houses Kalpavriksha or Kalpatru , a wish-fulfilling divine tree.

The eternal tree of life is believed to fulfill the wishes of devotees.

There’s a hole or crevice in the wall of the temple that’s believed to be inhabited by a snake.

Locals worship the snake and offer a bowl of milk in the evening. They say that the snake comes out of the hole every evening to accept the offer.

Surprisingly, the bowl is empty by morning. The sight of this snake is considered a blessing.

I waited for some time for the snake to grace me by making an appearance but all in vain!

🐪 You Must Add Chand Baori Stepwell in Abhaneri to Your Rajasthan Itinerary!

11:30 am: Kuldhara

Kuldhara, a ghost town is one of the famous haunted places in Rajasthan. Once (around the 13th century) home to Paliwal Brahmins, the village was abandoned (in the early 19th century) overnight by the entire community for untold reasons.

It could be due to a pandemic or an earthquake or water shortage or the inhumanity of Salam Singh (prime minister to the Maharwal of Jaisalmer), as locals claim.

The villagers left a curse on the village that no one would ever be able to settle there.

It is said that from then on whenever someone tries to stay here, strange paranormal activities chase them away.

Consequently, it remains deserted and haunted to this date. 84 other villages were also abandoned the same night.

The village is now managed by ASI. They have restored it so tourists can get an insight into how life must have been then.

It didn’t look spooky to me but I could smell sadness in the air.

PS: It’s time to head for the most awaited experience. Yes, exploring the Thar Desert! Most tourists head to Sam Sand Dunes , counted as one of the best places to visit in Jaisalmer. They are the most famous sand dunes and thus, more commercial and more crowded. And all the activities and camps are pricey here. We chose Khuri Sand Dunes . They are lesser-known sand dunes and thus, less commercial, more peaceful, and less expensive. Appearance-wise, both look the same.

🐪 A Haunted Fort of Bhangarh Near Jaipur is Sure to Intrigue You!

1:30 pm: Check-in at Pal Rajah Desert Camp

Located inside the Thar Desert National Park , Pal Rajah Desert Camp is one of the best luxury tented accommodations right on the sand dunes of Thar Desert.

The resort gives a feel of a traditional desert village and is equipped with modern amenities.

It’s rated highly for its beautiful location, good food, amazing facilities, and super hospitality, and stands out as one of the highly recommended resorts for a desert experience in Jaisalmer.

We stayed in a super deluxe Swiss tent. It was spacious, comfortable, and clean and had heating and cooling systems in place.

The ensuite bathroom had running hot and cold water. My favorite part of the stay?

I loved having a cup of tea on the patio overlooking the vast expanse of beautiful golden sand dunes.

Our package included a night stay in a luxury tent with breakfast, dinner, and high tea, a camel safari, and a cultural program of  Rajasthani folk music and dance.

We paid extra for dune bashing and stargazing desert camping.

Once the check-in formalities were completed, we had a hearty lunch at the onsite restaurant and retired for a little rest in our tent.

The concerned person informed us to reach the reception by 16:30 for a camel safari (our first ever) and dune bashing.

5 pm: Thar Desert Safari

As you come out of the resort, the camels with their masters will be waiting for you.

Camels and their saddle seats are beautifully adorned with a traditional patchwork fabric and vibrant pompons.

If it’s your first time riding a camel (like us), don’t worry. The camel rider will help you sit on and ride the camel.

I personally found getting on the camel rather comical. And the most fun part is when the camel gets up while you’re on its back 😉

Mind you, a camel stands up with its back legs first.

Nevertheless, we thoroughly enjoyed the camel safari and you are going too.

We trotted up and down the dunes before we finally made it to the vast expanse of sand dunes.

The sight of rolling sand dunes stretching to the horizon is awe-inspiring.

Mini-me jumped away on the sand and raced her up the dunes while I and hubby lounged on the sand as we waited for the sun to set.

As the sun slid down and cast a deep orange glow over the desert horizon, we could only gaze in awe.

We were so engrossed in enjoying the beauty of the moment that almost forgot to capture the mesmerizing desert sunset.

Our guide called us to experience the thrill of  dune bashing .

It’s crazy I mean the way the jeep zooms over the dunes at rapid speed and drops suddenly as it comes down the dunes.

I felt as if the jeep was going to fall off the dunes. It’s sheer madness. You must try it!

6 pm: High Tea and Dinner with Cultural Program

By the time we came back to the resort, the stage was set for the cultural program .

The seating arrangement was done around the campfire and the snacks and tea were served to the guests.

The men and women dressed in traditional attire put together a charismatic Rajasthani folk music and dance performance.

The women mesmerize the guests by exhibiting different forms of folk dances of Rajasthan like Kalbelia, Bhavai, Chakri, and Ghoomar.

The program continues till you have your dinner. The dinner buffet includes tasty and authentic local delicacies like Ker Sangri, Dal Bati Churma, and Bajre ki Roti.

11 pm: Night Jeep Safari with Bonfire and Stargazing

The best way to explore the star-studded night sky of the Thar desert is on a stargazing safari.

Day 3 of 3 Days in Jaisalmer Itinerary

8 am: breakfast @ cafe+.

Cafe+ has a super chill ambiance. Its eco-friendly (made out of recyclable materials) and quirky decors give out the boho vibe.

Not to mention the delicious food, courteous staff, prompt service, warm host, and amazing view of the fort.

While you’re there, you must try their masala chai alongside cheese omelets and grilled sandwiches.

10:30 am: Ghantiyali Mata Temple

This temple is on the way to Tanot Mata Temple from Jaisalmer. Tanot Mata is 7 km away from Ghantiyali Mata.

Our original plan didn’t include a visit to the temple of Ghantiyali Mata (we didn’t know about it) but one of the locals urged us to take blessings of Ghantiyali Mata before visiting Tanot Mata Temple.

They (Rajputs) believe that your visit to Tanot Mata is incomplete without visiting Ghantiyali Mata.

11 am: Tanot Mata Temple

Believed to be an incarnation of the divine goddess Hinglaj Mata, locals display utmost devotion to Tanot Mata.

Located in the tiny village of Tanot near the Indo-Pak border, Tanot Mata Temple is managed by the Indian Army (BSF) and thus, is well-maintained.

Indian Army Personnel share miraculous legends about how Tanot Mata (Avad Mata) helped Indian soldiers win the crucial battles of 1965 and 1971 against Pakistan.

The battle site of the Indo-Pak war of 1965 and 1971, Longewala is about 38 km from this temple.

In 1965, the Pakistan army dropped more than 3000 bombs but none of them exploded and didn’t do any harm.

BSF, after winning the 1965 war took charge of this temple. The same happened during an intense war in 1971. India won despite all odds.

Indian Army developed a strong faith in Tanot Mata.

Post-1971 war, BSF commissioned a huge temple along with a museum (you can see the unexploded bombs on display here) that recounts the glory of the temple.

You can also witness the Vijay Stambha inside the temple complex that commemorates the victory of Longewala.

1 pm: Indo-Pak Border (Border Pillar 609)

Indo-Pak Border (Border Pillar 609) is just about 20 km from Tanot Mata Temple. If you want to visit the International border, you must take permission.

PS: Indians have something about visiting the India-Pakistan Border. It not only fascinates us Indians but imbues a desire to see beyond the wires and fences. After all, both nations were once one. They are fashioned out of the same fabric and share cultural and linguistic values. A visit to the border brings back the horrors of partition stirs deep emotions and invokes a patriotic feeling.

The BSF check post near the entrance gate of the temple issued a visiting pass.

You’d need to submit a driver’s license (yours if you are driving your own car or your driver’s if you are traveling in a taxi) and they might ask for the IDs of the travelers in a car.

You can reclaim the driver’s license on your way back.

Also, they make you sign the out-entry register that keeps track of those leaving for the border.

They issue a single pass for two cars.

Both the cars need to drive to the border together as the border check posts on the way to the Indo-Pak border validate the pass.

Once you reach the border check post, you are required to sign the visitor’s register.

BSF Personnel warmly welcome tourists and patiently and enthusiastically answer all questions they toss at them.

It’s heartening to see how cool, calm, positive, and happy they remain despite the harsh conditions they work in.

You can see the double fencing that separates India and Pakistan but you are not allowed to get closer to it.

If you want to spot the Pakistan check post or Pakistani Rangers, you can do so by using their binoculars.

Note: I’d recommend you make your driver (along with his driving license) queue up at the BSF post while you visit the temple to receive the blessings of the Goddess so he could secure the visiting pass by the time you come out of the temple. It saves a lot of time and energy. We endured an extra long queue in the peak afternoon sun and also witnessed quite a tussle over a disorderly queue before we could get hold of the pass.

2 pm: Longewala War Memorial

Longewala War Memorial is built right on the site where one of the most notable battles in the history of India, the 1971 Battle of Longewala  took place.

The museum narrates the moments of valor and bravery of the soldiers of India and is well-maintained by the Indian Army.

You can witness Longewala Yudh-sthal (the real battlefield or war zone), uniforms and ammunition used by the Indian soldiers, and unit medals.

The walls are inscribed with the names and pictures of the brave martyrs, accounts of the battle, and testimonials.

Outside, you can catch sight of the actual bunkers and captured Pakistani tanks.

Another notable sight here is BP 638 which recounts the untold but fierce Battle of Boundary Pillar (BP) 638 fought by 13 Kumaon.

You can’t miss a 15-minute documentary that brings out the courage and patriotism of the Indian soldiers during the war.

I loved the way the movie is being screened in an actual bunker used during the war. Feels.

Entry Ticket: Entry to the memorial is free, however, you need to pay INR 25 (USD 0.31) for the documentary.

4 pm: Mid-afternoon Meal at One of the Restaurants in Ramgarh

There are quite a few Dhabas (roadside food stalls) like Hinglaj Restaurant, Jain Restaurant, Murli Restaurant, and many more in Ramgarh.

It takes approximately an hour to reach Ramgarh from Longewala.

If you have no qualms about eating at a roadside eatery (they don’t maintain high standards of hygiene but the food is good) then you can enjoy your mid-afternoon meal here.

Or else you can pack a lot of dry snacks with you so you can eat something on the way before you reach Bada Bagh.

5:30 pm: Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh or Barabagh literally translates to the big garden and true to its name it’s a big garden complex.

The complex houses a series of beautifully carved royal cenotaphs (chhatris).

A photographer’s delight, Bada Bagh affords heart-stopping views of the skyline and the vast desert.

It looks ethereal during sunset when the yellow sandstone cenotaphs soak in a golden glow.

Sunrise is also a beautiful and quiet time to visit this place.

Entry Ticket: INR 100 (USD 1.25) per Indian and INR 300 (USD 3.75) per foreigner

There’s an extra charge of INR 150 (USD 1.88) for a camera.

6:30 pm: Refresh Yourself with a Cup of Masala Chai at Prabhu Tea Stall

Prabhu Tea Stall is famous for its perfect cup of tea.

If you aren’t a tea lover like me, you can try their kadhai wala doodh (cauldron milk).

A sip of hot kadhai wala doodh served in kulhad tastes heavenly.

7 pm to 8:30 pm: Relax at your Hotel

It was a long day!

I know, you need to unwind.

Why don’t you sit down with a nice cup of coffee and take a few moments to yourself before you get ready for a great dinner?

8:30 pm: Dinner at Angaara Restaurant And Barbeque

Angaara Restaurant and Barbeque has to be on your list of places to eat when in Jaisalmer.

You are guaranteed delicious freshly cooked soulful food (their cashew curry is to die for) with a stunning view of the historic fort.

Note: We couldn’t visit the Jaisalmer War Museum and the Thar Heritage Museum . If you’ve time, I’d urge you to visit the museums.

A tribute to the brave Indian soldiers, the Jaisalmer War Museum (JWM) celebrates their contributions to and sacrifices for the nation. It’s open from 9 am to 5 pm every day except Tuesdays, and the entry is free. The Thar Heritage Museum features ancient folk art of the Thar Desert. It’s open from 9 am to 6 pm daily. It costs INR 60 (USD 0.75) per Indian visitor and INR 100 (USD 1.25) per foreign national.

I had a query around tent/desert camp stay on 2nd day ( afternoon). Did you check out of the camp next morning and go back to the hotel ? I am planning first day in tent and following 2 days in hotel. So trying to figure out the best day to execute the plan – like will I require to book a cab from hotel to tent and back.

We checked out of the desert camp the next morning soon after breakfast as we had a long day ahead. We explored Tanot Mata Temple, Longewala, India Pakistan Border, and Bada Bagh before we retired to our hotel in Jaisalmer.

We had booked a car with a driver for the entire Rajasthan trip. You can book a cab from the hotel to the tent, spend a day there, and then head back to your hotel in Jaisalmer the next morning.

Trump visits border wall in Arizona, trades accusations with Democrats on immigration policy

On a dirt road below the shrub-dotted hills of Arizona, Donald Trump used a stretch of wall and a pile of steel beams to draw a visual contrast between his approach to securing the border and that of his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris .

Trump brought along grieving mothers, the sheriff of Cochise County and the head of the Border Patrol union to echo his tough-on-border security message at Thursday's visit, which was themed "Make America Safe Again."

"To my right is what we call Trump wall. This was wall that was built under President Trump," said Paul Perez, the president of the Border Patrol union. "To my left, we have what we call Kamala wall. It's just sitting there doing nothing, lying down."

The Biden administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the wall construction.

The visit was the fourth in a series of events held in battleground states this week to try to draw the focus away from Democrats' celebration of Harris' presidential nomination in Chicago. Speakers at the convention on Wednesday night accused Trump of using the border to stir up his base by demonizing immigrants.

Joining Thursday's border visit were the mothers of children who were killed during the Biden administration in cases where the suspects are immigrants in the country illegally. Trump frequently highlights attacks involving immigrants to fuel concerns about the Biden administration policies, though some studies have found that people living in the U.S. illegally are less likely than native-born Americans to have been arrested for violent, drug and property crimes.

"I just really, really, really want everybody to please take into consideration how important border control is because we're losing very innocent people to heinous crimes," said Alexis Nungaray, the mother of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray , who was strangled to death in Houston in June.

At the Arizona event, snipers stood nearby at an elevated position, their eyes and weapons pointed toward Mexico, a day after Trump held his first outdoor rally since an assassination attempt last month. Security forces were also visible on the Mexican side of the border, including several men with rifles and tactical gear. Others wore uniforms identifying them as members of the Mexican state police.

"What Biden and Kamala have done to the families here with me and so many others, thousands and thousands of others, not only killed, but also really badly hurt, badly hurt to a point where they'll never lead a normal life again. It's shameful, and it's evil," Trump said.

In his tour of battleground states this week, Trump has traveled to Pennsylvania, Michigan and North Carolina and will hold events in Las Vegas and the Phoenix suburb of Glendale on Friday. His running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, spoke at the same location near the border a few weeks ago.

In the first four months of 2024, Border Patrol recorded more than 250,000 migrant apprehensions in the Tucson sector, which includes Cochise County. That was the most of any region patrolled by the agency, according to government statistics. 

But in recent months , the number of illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border have fallen to the lowest level in years , according to Customs and Border Protection data obtained by CBS News, following President Biden's  order curtailing asylum  and action by Mexico to stop migrants heading north.

Elected Democratic officials argued Wednesday night  at the convention in Chicago that their party is the one offering real leadership on border issues.

Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, the chair of the Democratic Caucus, said Americans don't have to make a choice between "a secure border and building an America for all." 

"Under Harris, we can and will do both," he said.

"When it comes to the border, hear me when I say, 'You know nothing, Donald Trump,'" said Rep. Veronica Escobar, who represents the border city of El Paso, Texas. "He and his Republican imitators see the border and immigration as a political opportunity to exploit instead of an issue to address."

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, spoke after a video played showing Republican opposition to a bipartisan border deal earlier this year. Murphy was the top Democrat negotiating the proposal with conservative senators and said the bill would have had unanimous support if it weren't for Trump.

Trump was asked about the deal, and he called it "weak" and "ineffective," adding a bill was not needed for President Biden to take action.

"He didn't need a bill. He knows that," he said. "You know I didn't have a bill. I said 'close the border.'"

The escalation that long felt inevitable arrived in a blaze of cross-border attacks over the weekend, but a Middle East on edge woke Monday having escaped all-out war — for now at least.

The intense exchange between Israel and Hezbollah followed weeks of threats that stoked fears of a wider regional conflict.

And on Sunday, Israel launched what it said were pre-emptive strikes on southern Lebanon after saying it had detected preparations for a “large-scale” attack by the Iran-backed militant group.

Soon after, Hezbollah aimed hundreds of rockets and drones at Israel and claimed to have hit a military intelligence base near Tel Aviv — revenge, it said, for the assassination of a senior commander last month in Beirut.

It was the heaviest fire the two sides have traded in 10 months of simmering conflict.

But both Israel and Hezbollah quickly signaled they were happy to leave things there, for now. Tehran, reiterating its own vow of "definitive" retaliation against Israel, touted the Hezbollah attacks as a success. And Washington, a staunch ally of Israel, voiced continued hope for efforts to secure a cease-fire in Gaza.

“The exchange of fire alongside the Israeli-Lebanese border ... and the post-strike messages from both Israel and Hezbollah seemingly indicate neither is interested in an all-out war,” Avi Melamed, a former Israeli intelligence official and negotiator, said in an analysis shared with NBC News on Sunday.

He said the round of violence could bring some “calm to the region” and “bring an end to the anxious period of waiting for rounds of retaliatory strikes that could very well have led to an all-out war.”

The escalation came amid ongoing talks in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, to negotiate a deal between Israel and Hamas that would end the Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip and secure the release of hostages held by Hamas in the Palestinian enclave.

The high-level talks in Cairo ended Sunday without any final agreement, though they’re expected to continue at lower levels over the coming days in an effort to close remaining gaps in the negotiations, a U.S. official told NBC News. The talks “have been constructive and were conducted in a spirit on all sides to reach a final and implementable agreement,” the official said.

In an address to Lebanese civilians Sunday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said the group had delayed its response to commander Fuad Shukr’s assassination in order to allow negotiations to continue, and had no intention of targeting civilian infrastructure.

Now, Nasrallah said, “Lebanon can rest.” But he warned that if the results of Sunday’s operation were “not sufficient, we reserve the right to respond.”

Hezbollah, which has the largest missile arsenal of any nonstate actor in the world according to weapons watchdogs, has previously said it would halt its attacks on Israel if a cease-fire deal is struck.

Israel Defense Forces spokesman Nadav Shoshani said Hezbollah's attack might have appeared more subdued because of what Israel has described as its pre-emptive strike carried out by dozens of fighter jets.

“Part of this attack looking not as big was our self-defense attack in the morning before their attack,” Shoshani told NBC News.

Hezbollah said it ultimately fired around 320 Katyusha rockets toward 11 Israeli bases and military sites.

The Lebanese Health Ministry said at least three people were killed amid the Israeli strikes, with Reuters reporting that a fighter from the Hezbollah-allied Shia group Amal had been killed.

During a news briefing Sunday, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said the Israeli military was aware of at least six militants killed in the strikes. He said that one IDF soldier died of injuries after the patrol boat he was in was hit by an Iron Dome interceptor or interception fragments.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned at the beginning of a Cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv that Sunday's hostilities were "not the end of the story," however.

Iran, which has vowed its own retaliation against Israel for the assassinations of Shukr and Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh, has yet to act.

The country's new foreign minister, Abbas Aragchi, said late Sunday that Iran's response "is definitive and will be measured and calculated.” And early Monday, his spokesman praised the Hezbollah attack as highlighting that Israel has lost its “deterrence power.”

“Despite the comprehensive support of states like the United States, Israel could not predict the time and place of a limited and managed response by the resistance,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote on X.

Trump Again Invokes ‘Blood Bath’ and Dehumanizes Migrants in Border Remarks

The former president has tried to stoke fear around immigration and border security throughout his 2024 campaign, as he has done in the past.

Former President Donald J. Trump again cast President Biden’s immigration record in violent and ominous terms on Tuesday, accusing him in two speeches in battleground states of creating a “border blood bath” and once more using dehumanizing language to describe some migrants entering the country illegally.

In a speech in Grand Rapids, Mich., Mr. Trump, flanked by law enforcement officers, reiterated his baseless claim that other countries were sending “prisoners, murderers, drug dealers, mental patients and terrorists, the worst they have” to the United States. Immigration officials have said that most of the people crossing the border are members of vulnerable families escaping poverty and violence.

Mr. Trump also used his speech, which lasted roughly 45 minutes, to defend his use of dehumanizing language to refer to immigrants accused of crimes. After referring to the man who the authorities say killed a 22-year-old nursing student in Georgia in February, Mr. Trump said: “Democrats said please don’t call them ‘animals.’ I said, no, they’re not humans, they’re animals.”

Mr. Trump drew attention last month when, while discussing the U.S. auto industry, he predicted a “blood bath for the country” should he lose in November. After critics accused him of stoking violence, Mr. Trump and his allies pointed back to Mr. Biden, insisting he was responsible for a “blood bath” because of his immigration policies.

The former president has repeatedly criticized Mr. Biden, accusing him of maintaining lax border security that he blames for violent crime, though available data does not support the idea that migrants are contributing to increases in crime.

Mr. Trump’s campaign appears to be trying to turn “blood bath” into a catchphrase, essentially trolling his critics and shifting the focus to Mr. Biden. On Tuesday, the Republican National Committee, which the Trump campaign now effectively controls, introduced a website, BidenBloodbath.com, that mirrors Mr. Trump’s argument that Mr. Biden is responsible for an “invasion” at the United States’ border with Mexico. The site highlights a number of violent crimes in which undocumented immigrants have been accused.

But his remarks in Michigan and at a rally later in Green Bay, Wis., also demonstrated how the former president has tried to stoke fears around immigration and border security in the 2024 election, a tactic he used effectively in 2016. Republicans have been eager to keep the issue at the top of voters’ minds in a bid to chip away at Mr. Biden’s support.

“This is country-changing, it’s country-threatening, and it’s country-wrecking,” Mr. Trump said in Michigan of migrants crossing the southern border. “They have wrecked our country.”

Democrats have pushed back against that framing. Ahead of Mr. Trump’s visit, the Democratic National Committee put up billboards near Grand Rapids referring to a bipartisan border bill that fell apart in the Senate after Mr. Trump pressed Republicans to block it. The billboards claimed that “Donald Trump broke the border” and that the former president wanted only “chaos, not solutions.”

Mr. Trump’s speeches in both states were his first campaign events after a weekslong break from the trail, during which he raised money, contended with legal issues and blasted his political and legal opponents on social media.

Mr. Trump has seized on high-profile crimes involving immigrants to try to make inroads in key battleground states, including Michigan and Wisconsin, connecting the influx of migrants at the southern border to states hundreds of miles away.

On Tuesday, he said that “once peaceful suburban Michigan” was coming “under an invasion” and spoke of the recent killing of Ruby Garcia, who was found dead on the side of a highway in Grand Rapids last month. The authorities have said that Ms. Garcia was dating the man accused of killing her, who entered the country illegally as a child and was deported to Mexico in 2020.

Michigan Democrats blasted Mr. Trump’s references to Ms. Garcia in remarks before his appearance. Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, said Mr. Trump was “exploiting” Ms. Garcia’s death and called his response “shameful.” And while Mr. Trump said in Michigan that he had spoken with some of Ms. Garcia’s family, her sister told a local television station that Mr. Trump “did not speak with us.”

Ahead of Mr. Trump’s speech in Michigan, his campaign handed out packets to reporters that highlighted other people who the campaign said had been affected by crimes involving undocumented immigrants. They included Laken Riley, the Georgia nursing student whose death has become a flashpoint among Republicans. The authorities say Ms. Riley was killed by a Venezuelan migrant who had entered the country illegally.

Pete Hoekstra, the chair of the Michigan Republican Party, said that “it’s clear immigration and the economy are going to dominate the debate here in Michigan.” He added that he believed voters in the state “look at what’s happening on the border, and it’s hard for them to believe exactly what they’re seeing, that there’s no rule of law.”

Both Michigan and Wisconsin were part of the so-called blue wall that Democrats had counted on for two decades before the 2016 race, when Mr. Trump won over working-class white voters who are key parts of the electorate in both states.

Mr. Biden won both states in 2020, although Mr. Trump falsely claimed during his rally in Wisconsin, which held its presidential primaries on Tuesday , that he had won there “by a lot” and insisted that the election had been stolen from him.

Democrats also won governors’ races in both states in 2018 and defended their seats in 2022, in part by making protecting abortion access central to their races.

The party continued its efforts on Tuesday to make abortion rights a key campaign issue. Though Mr. Biden did not hold public campaign events, his campaign seized on a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court on Monday that allowed the state’s six-week abortion ban but also put abortion access on the ballot there this fall.

There is little indication that Mr. Biden will devote significant time and resources to competing in Florida. But his campaign released a television ad that it plans to run in battleground states — including Michigan and Wisconsin — that attacked Mr. Trump for statements claiming credit for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022.

A senior adviser to the Trump campaign, Brian Hughes, addressed the ruling in Florida, saying in a statement that Mr. Trump supports states’ rights and thinks “voters should have the last word.”

Mr. Trump did not mention abortion, or his role in appointing three of the Supreme Court justices who helped overturn Roe, at either event. But after his remarks in Michigan, he responded to a reporter’s question about the Florida ruling by saying that his campaign would “be making a statement next week” on abortion.

A spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, Aida Ross, said in a statement: “We don’t need to wait until next week to know where Donald Trump stands on abortion — he has been peddling the same anti-choice extremism for years.”
