Cozumel is proof that Mexico can do ‘island flavor’ with the best of the Caribbean. It may not be the biggest island in the sea, but Cozumel offers a huge variety of things to do, see, taste and explore. This island just happens to be perched atop a coral reef, which promises hours of snorkeling or scuba diving fun. Cruises to Cozumel dock at the island’s heart — just minutes from San Miguel’s seafront shops and the white sand beach at Chankanaab National Park. Drift among star corals and sea fans on a Cozumel diving excursion or simply kick back on the beach beneath your own palm palapa as the turquoise waves roll in. With non-stop zip line action, ancient discoveries at the nearby Mayan ruins, or time spent with your toes in the sand, a cruise to Cozumel may just top your best vacations list… before you even get home.

  • Cruise to Cozumel for a scuba diving adventure along the Great Mesoamerican Reef.
  • Enjoy a leisurely day of snorkeling with iridescent fish at Chankanaab National Park.
  • Swim with the flippy guys at Dolphinaris.

Cozumel & Cancun, Cenotes

YUCATAN DO IT

Cozumel & cancun cruises.

Dive into bright-blue waters, Mayan ruins and spicy specialties in Cozumel and Cancun.

Cruise to Cozumel and Cancun, two of the most-visited destinations on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, where there's a lot more to them than beautiful beaches and world-class nightlife. Add an ancient component to your Yucatan adventure with excursions to the Mayan sites at Chichen Itza and Tulum. Or work off your margaritas with a spelunking expedition inside a Cenote cave. Experience cuisine, through stateside dishes like chile relleno and ceviche, but you'll also taste more regional-specific ingredients like local sour oranges and achiote paste, a bright-red blend of annato seeds, cumin and other spices. Discover the magic with a Cozumel and Cancun cruise.

EMBRACE THE BLUES

Your eyes weren't playing tricks as your cruise ship approached the Yucatan: The best Cozumel and Cancun cruises take you to stunning beaches, with perfectly white sand and water so clear and blue you'll think you're on a movie set. While you'll likely stay close to where the masses are in Cancun's Zona Hotelera, Cozumel's beaches are easier to explore, from bustling Dzul Ha to quiet Chen Rio.

Girl Snorkeling in Cozumel, Mexico

DISCOVER THE DEPTHS

One of the best benefits of the clear Caribbean waters off the Yucatan is world-class scuba diving. At Cozumel's Santa Rosa Wall, you can see large schools of grouper fish, while the Cancun Underwater Museum reveals a world of sub-surface art. The water in the Cenote caverns located in the inland part of the peninsula is just as clear— just be prepared for the close quarters of the caves.

ANCIENT ENCOUNTERS

Head south to see the Mayan ruins of Tulum, which sit right on a beach less than a two-hour drive from Cancun. After you finish exploring, sit down for a beachside Corona at one of the bars just outside the historical site. Or drive two hours inland to Chichen Itza: Its step pyramids are one of the greatest architectural achievements of the ancient world. Shop for Mayan-inspired trinkets from one of the friendly local sellers.

Yucatan Peninsula Town Near Cozumel and Cancun

GET YOUR CULTURE FIX

Cancun and Cozumel's town centers remind you that these places aren't just beach hot spots — they're every bit as "real Mexico" as cities in the country's interior. In Cancun, visit food-truck filled Parque Las Palpas, or stop into the shops and cafes of vibrant Avenida Tulum. In Cozumel, check out the understated, elegant San Miguel Cathedral, or learn about the local ecosystem at the Museum of Cozumel Island.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Cozumel Cancun Cruises Insider

Mexico is ready for you to explore at any time of year. In general, the weather is best between December and April — there's little rain, and the temperatures are very comfortable. The wet season starts in May and ends in October, while hurricane season (affecting mostly the Caribbean side) starts in June and runs until November.

When you travel to Mexico, one of the best ways to enjoy the country is by immersion. Try the local food, shop the local markets, and choose excursions that allow you to spend time getting to know a specific neighborhood, historic site or natural wonder.

Brushing up on your Spanish will make your life in the Yucatan a lot easier, even if this region is the most Anglophone-friendly part of Mexico.

For a more local adventure during your stay, have any local hotel (you don't need to be a guest in most cases) order you a taxi to Cancun city.

Enjoy Cozumel's famed scuba diving, even if you're not licensed, thanks to the "SNUBA" experience offered at Chankanaab Park.

CUISINE CHILE OUT

Many of the most popular local Yucatan dishes will be familiar to American palates, particularly if you reside in the southern part of the country. Still, even if you recognize the names of these dishes, you've never tasted versions as delicious as you find in Cancun and Cozumel, where the cuisine is defined by habanero chiles, citrus, smoke and the ever-present achiote paste.

Authentic Cozumel Shrimp Tacos

There are many kinds of ceviche — sushi-grade raw fish marinated in citrus juice — but you can always go the classic route and choose ceviche simple, which pairs simple white fish (usually tilapia) with lime juice, tomatoes, onion and cilantro. Or order one with a more exotic choice of protein — ceviche de pulpo features tender octopus.

Mexican Chile Relleno

CHILE RELLENO

Mexican chefs are experts at taking food to the next level, which is exactly the point of the chile relleno. There are many variants of the dish, though all involve filling a poblano pepper with spiced meat and cheese. One popular variant includes ground pork, raisins and nuts.

Chilaquiles, Traditional Mexican Breakfast

CHILAQUILES

Chilaquiles, which you can essentially think of as a Mexican stir-fry, spotlights red and green Mexican chiles, though they're only one component of this culinary mashup. Many variations ofchilaquiles exist, but you can count on having eggs, tortilla strips, onions, cilantro and cheese in every bite.

RELATED PORTS

Continue to experience the charm of Mexico by cruising to Progreso, which is also located on the Yucatan peninsula, or Veracruz, which is further up the coast. Many cruises to Cancun and Cozumel cruise ports continue on to other in the Western Caribbean like Belize City, Grand Cayman and Montego Bay.

8 Top Cozumel Hotels & Beaches With Day Passes for Cruise Passengers

Without a doubt, Cozumel is among the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean. If you’re going on a cruise — no matter if you depart anywhere from Florida to Texas — the chances are high that you’re going to make a stop at the Mexican port. Each year millions of cruise passengers visit.

cozumel cruise all inclusive

There’s good reason that Cozumel is such a popular port. From shopping to clear blue water to fantastic restaurants to white sand beaches, it has something for everyone.

In fact, there are so many things available to enjoy that you might be wondering what you should do while in port. While there is tons to experience on the island , one of the most popular activities is a simple day pass to one of the hotels or resorts on Cozumel .

These day passes give you access to the facilities, meaning manicured beaches, lounge chairs, pools, showers, and more. In addition, they usually come with food and drinks included.

Many people love day passes because it gives you a chance to relax, sip an umbrella drink, and hang out in a tropical paradise while having someone cater to your every whim. What’s not to like?

We’ve rounded up some of the most popular Cozumel hotels and resorts with day passes, including details like price, what’s included, and more.

One tip: If you plan to visit, it’s a good idea to book ahead of time. Some spots fill up, especially if there are multiple ships in port during your visit.

El Cid La Ceiba Beach

If you want a resort close to the cruise pier, it doesn’t get any closer than this. The spot sit just north of the International cruise terminal, where Royal Caribbean ships most commonly dock. In fact, from the beach the cruise ships seemingly cast a shadow over the resort.

With the day pass you have access to all the facilities, including lounge chairs, pool, towels, wi-fi, and even snorkel equipment. In addition, unlimited meals and beverages are included.

One thing to keep in mind is that in this area of the island, the shoreline is rocky, but there is water access.

  • Prices: $52 per person (adults 12+) | $28 per person (7-11 years) | Kids six and under are free
  • Website: https://www.elcid.com/el-cid-la-ceiba-resort-cozumel

Allegro Cozumel

Allegro Cozumel is a resort located about eight miles south of the cruise pier, so you’ll need to catch a cab. What’s nice is that it’s away from the hustle and bustle of the port, so things are a lot quieter and calmer, and there is a beautiful stretch of beach with white sand to enjoy.

The day pass at Allegro includes open bar as well as buffet, snacks and other drinks. You can also enjoy the pool, beach, sun chairs, showers, restrooms, and non-motorized sports like kayaking and sail boats. Allegro also has a small water park for kids.

  • Prices: $60 per person (adult 12+) | $30 per person (3-11 years)
  • Website: https://www.barcelo.com/en-us/allegro-cozumel/

Mr. Sanchos Beach Club

When it comes to Cozumel’s most popular day pass resorts, Mr. Sanchos takes top billing among cruise passengers. In fact, you’ll likely see a number of people from your ship at the club. It’s located on the southwest side of the island, where there are long stretches (1,500 feet) of white beaches.

The resort features everything — nice beaches, all you can eat food and drink (some alcohol included), lounge chairs, pools, lockers, and shaded hammocks. Other activities like an inflatable aquatic park, parasailing and jet-skiing are available for an extra charge. There are also massages you can book.

  • Prices: $68 per person (adult) | $45 per person (12-17 years) | $40 per person (4-11 years)
  • Website: https://www.mrsanchos.com/

Playa Mia Beach & Water Park

Located just north of Mr. Sanchos, Playa Mia is another beach resort taking advantage of the beautiful beaches on this part of the island. It is a little different from other resorts with day passes in that they offer a lot of options from a bare-bones ticket that doesn’t include food/drink to a full experience with all-you-can-drink, eat, and port transportation.

The park features a beautiful beach, lounge chairs, pools, a full kid’s waterpark, waterslides, a floating waterpark, snorkeling, volleyball, and more.

Upgrade your ticket and you can access things like the buffet and bar. Add-on rentals like parasailing and jet-skis are also available.

Whether you are wanting to just enjoy some quiet family time together, or have tons of things to do, Playa Mia has it all. It’s especially good for families with kids.

  • Prices: $40 per person (adult 12+) | $20 per person (4-11 years)
  • Website: https://www.playamia.com/

Paradise Beach Club Cozumel

Another popular beach spot for cruise passengers visiting Cozumel, Paradise Beach offers anything you could want for a day on the island. It features a large heated pool, an inflatable water park that kids will love, beachy bar with swings, and plenty of food and drink.

Of course, the highlight is the wide beach that slopes gently to the electric blue water, where you should have no trouble finding a lounger. It’s just down from the San Francisco Beach Club mentioned below, but offers significantly more (although for a higher price).

  • Prices: $64 per person (adult) | $47 per person (12-17 years) | $41 per person (5-11 years)
  • Website: https://paradisebeachcozumel.com/

San Francisco Beach Club

Looking for the least expensive option on our list? That would be the San Francisco Beach Club, located about 10 minutes south of the cruise piers. The charge is $20 per person, and that includes umbrellas, lounger, pool access, wi-fi, snorkel gear and more. There are also showers and bathrooms for you to use.

If you’re hungry or thirsty, food and drink isn’t included in the price, but there is bar and restaurant options available. You can also book a ticket that includes these items. There are also other add-ons like snorkel tours and jet skis.

  • Prices: $20 per person | All-inclusive for $40 per person
  • Website: https://www.beachbreak-cozumel.com/

Playa Palancar

This spot is a little different than most of the other spots on our list. First, it’s a bit more secluded from the rest of the spots, sitting in its own little area of the beach. Given it’s a distance from other hotels and beach clubs, everyone here is visiting Playa Palancar.

Second, there’s not a day pass here. Instead, entrance is free and there is a charge for other amenities. Expect to pay $10 for chairs with umbrellas, and then you’ll also pay out of pocket for food and drink. Everything from massages to towel rental are also available, as well as snorkeling, jet skis and more.

  • Prices: Free admission (charge for food and services)
  • Website: https://www.playapalancar.com.mx/

Nachi Cocom

Nachi Cocom is one that you’ll need to book ahead of time if you plan to go. According to its website, the spot is limited to just 130 guests per day. That means it fills up fast and if you’re wanting a place with loud music and lots of partying, this isn’t it.

With its all-inclusive packages, you can get not just food and drink provided, but also beach access with chairs and palapas, swimming pool, hot tub, beach bar, hammocks, showers, wi-fi, and more.

In all, it’s a more quiet and secluded experience than what you might find at other beach clubs on the list.

  • Prices: $59 per person (Adults 16+) | $45 per person (Children 12-15) | $19 per person (Children 4-11)
  • Website: https://cozumelnachicocom.com/

Anemona de Mar

What about a beach club inside of an ecological park? That’s exactly what you’ll find with Anemona de Mar Beach Club. It’s about 40 minutes from the cruise terminals on the southern part of Cozumel, sitting inside the bounds of Punta Sur, a protected park.

As you’d expect given the location, it’s a bit quieter and more laid back. So if you’re wanting a party, that’s not the case here. Instead, picture a more relaxing vibe. You’ll likely spend a lot of time on a daybed under an umbrella. There’s also a restaurant, facilities, massages, and more.

To visit you’ll want a day pass, which includes access to the beach club and park, as well as guacamole, tequila tasting, and snorkel equipment. There is also restaurant/bar where you can order something to eat or drink.

  • Prices: $29 per person
  • Website: https://anemonademarbeach.com/

Don’t Forget Taxi Fare/Transportation!

If you do book one of these day pass options, one thing you’ll want to be sure to include in your budget is the taxi fare. Taxis are everywhere around Cozumel and can take you to any of the beach clubs on the island… but it can get pricey.

Rates are listed by destination at the port ( see the current fares here ) and run around $15-20 each way for 1-4 people. There are extra charges for more passengers. This can add an additional $40 or more to your day.

Sharing is caring!

Beach resorts are becoming increasingly popular with cruise passengers in places like Cozumel. They offer more safety, better security, lifeguards, and more luxurious facilities than typically found at public beaches, so it should be no surprise they are in demand. So, if you’re planning your day in Cozumel, here are 7 of the best Cozumel beach resorts for cruise passengers that you can visit with a day pass.

cozumel cruise all inclusive

Cozumel Beach Resorts For Cruise Passengers

Cozumel is filled with beautiful beaches, including many that are very near a Cozumel cruise port . Instead of spending your day in Cozumel cruise port at a public beach, you may want to consider purchasing a day pass to one of these seven beach resorts. The benefits of visiting a beach resort instead include a host of amenities like 5-star food, service, and facilities.

1. Iberostar Cozumel Resort

Iberostar is a world-renowned hotel and resort group with a 5-star luxury resort in Cozumel. Though the resort focuses on its hotel, its day pass is also rated five stars. Apart from spending the day lazing on the tropical beach, there are many exciting activities for adults and children.

The resort offers scuba diving along one of the world’s most spectacular and famous coral reefs. You can take a catamaran or a kayak out on the water to explore. There is also a pool area with regular volleyball games, and a kiddies pool and kids club to keep the young ones occupied.

The resort is also within easy reach of Mayan ruins, the National Park, and the town of San Miguel, which means you will have various options at Iberostar Cozumel.

2. Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

Ask anyone who’s ever taken a Cozumel cruise, and you will hear the name, Playa Mia . Play Mia is more than just a day resort; it is a fun resort park on the beach.

The day pass admission fee includes 20 attractions and activities for the whole family at no additional cost. These include a range of water slides, an adventure circuit, kayaking, water bicycles, pedal boats, massage tubs, and even an underwater Mayan city. The resort also offers an entertainment team to keep the kids entertained.

Add-on activities, like parasailing, are also available at an additional fee.

Playa Mia consistently receives excellent reviews wherever you look, and with good reason. If it’s fun and excitement you’re looking for, Playa Mia Grand Beach Park is the Cozumel beach resort you’re looking for to spend a day off the cruise ship.

3. El Cozumeleno Beach Resort

El Cozumeleno is a resort built around a hotel but offers an affordable and high-value day pass. Apart from the beautiful tropical beach, the resort features two pool areas, a safe children’s pool, a mini-golf course, a game room, a tennis court, and a gym. All of this is included in your day pass. You even get snorkeling gear included in the price, and guides are available to take you snorkeling.

Cozumel Beach Resorts For Cruise Passengers

Unlimited meal, snack, and drink options are available on-site at the restaurant and snack bar. The El Cozumeleno day pass provides a great deal of value, and the resort consistently gets excellent ratings online. If you’re looking for a fun but less adrenaline-filled day out, this is the resort of choice.

4. Allegro Resort

Allegro Cozumel Resort is part of the popular Barcelo Hotel group. The resort is a short 20-minute drive from the cruise pier, so you won’t waste valuable time on the road. It is located on a private stretch of the stunning San Francisco beach, which makes it the perfect place to unwind. But there’s plenty for the family to do at Allegro Resort.

Your day pass includes access to buffet meals, snacks, an open bar, sports, kayaking, windsurfing, and sailing, just to name a few. Activities requiring additional fees at other resorts are free at Allegro. The kids’ entertainment options are all fully supervised, removing much of the stress and making this a far better choice than a public beach.

Allegro is rated with four stars, and the reviews prove past visitors’ happiness with their choice of resort. The all-inclusive nature of the day pass ensures that Allegro Resort is unbelievable value for money. But despite this fact, Allegro isn’t as well-known as other resorts, so it’s never overly crowded.

5. Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club

Mr. Sancho’s is a one-day resort popular with cruise passengers. Located just seven miles from Puerta Maya, it is easy to get to with a taxi. The resort is only open from Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM, but if your visit falls within that time frame, it’s hard to find a better deal.

Some activities include snorkeling, massages, parasailing, jet skis, a water park, horseback riding, and jungle ATV tours. The beachfront has lounge chairs, side tables, lockers, and ocean kayaks. There is also a pool with a swim-up bar and freshwater showers. You can play volleyball and ping pong or simply relax in a hammock.

Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club offers so many options that you can spend your perfect day on-shore at Cozumel, whatever that means for you and your family.

6. Punta Sur

For those looking for a day-pass beach resort that offers something different, Punta Sur Eco Beach Park is perfect. It is located in a natural state reserve that spans over 1,000 hectares, covered with wild plants, animals, and lagoons. Punta Sur is a nature-lover’s dream in a beach resort.

The beach is a picture-perfect example of what a tropical beach should be, with its turquoise waters, white beaches, palm trees, and sea fan gardens.

In terms of activities, it is less adrenaline-driven than other beach resorts, but there’s no lack of things to do. You can visit the Navigation Museum, see the view from the Celarain Lighthouse, go on crocodile- or bird-watching expeditions, or take a boat ride. For an additional fee, you can also get a massage, rent a kayak, or go snorkeling.

Of course, you can spend the day simply relaxing on the beach if you prefer. There are lounge chairs, hammocks, showers, restrooms, and a lifeguard on duty.

Entrance to Punta Sur is very affordable, but it’s not all-inclusive. The resort has a restaurant and bar, but food, snacks, and beverages are not included in the price. However, with Punta Sur being TripAdvisor’s 2021 Traveler’s Choice award winner, you know it’s worth a visit.

7. El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel And Resort

Another relaxing option is El Cid La Ceiba . Its activities involve enjoying the Caribbean Ocean and tropical beaches, including diving, scuba, and snorkeling. You can take a jet ski out onto the ocean or go for a ride on a banana boat. The resort also has a pool with a swim-up bar, a tide pool with cascading waterfalls, a wading pool, and a jacuzzi.

But if you don’t want to spend the entire day on the beach, you can also play tennis or golf or go horseback riding. Island tours frequently depart from the resort if you want to see more of Cozumel, and a relaxing massage could be the perfect way to end the day. All these options are included in your day pass at El Cid La Ceiba.

Closing Thoughts

cozumel cruise all inclusive

Choosing to spend your time in Cozumel at a beach resort means you’ll have access to more than just surf and sand. Your entrance fee means you’ll have access to other resort activities like snorkeling, water sports, pools and waterslides, and golf, to name a few.

Travel Guide

  • # 3 in Best Places to Visit in Mexico

Cozumel's clear turquoise waters and powdery sands coax travelers from cold winter climates to this relatively small island off the coast of Playa del Carmen along Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.  Cruise ships  are a constant feature of Cozumel's coastal views, and the atmosphere on this charming island is often interrupted by tourist chatter. In fact, Cozumel's charms are so effective that the shopping plazas and eateries along the waterfront stay congested much of the year – especially during the day when several huge cruise ships are in port at once.

Cozumel Mexico Port Guide

Cruises to Cozumel, Mexico are popular for good reason—after all, Cozumel effortlessly balances its flashy side with a natural, unblemished beauty. The tropical climate promises close heat, plentiful sunshine, and pristine beaches for every kind of traveler.

Divers love Cozumel for its clear waters and preserved coral reefs. Beach lovers can rest and relax at beaches like El Cielo or Playa Palancar, while outdoor enthusiasts will find respite in the island’s jungles and national parks. There’s no shortage of beach bars, clubs, and dancing on the island for nightlife lovers, either. Cozumel may be one of Mexico’s biggest destinations, but it hasn’t lost its heart in the process.

While on your Cozumel cruise, you can stay close to the cruise port with shopping, eateries, and sights in historic San Miguel. Head inland to the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, or take things one step further on your Caribbean Cruise with excursions to Tulum, Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, or the beautiful Playa del Carmen.

San Gervasio

About a 25 minute drive from the International Pier in Cozumel, the San Gervasio archaeological site chronicles the settlement of the Maya civilization on the island. See ruins of a holy site where the Maya once worshipped the goddess Ixchel, or take a guided tour to learn more about the history and preservations of the ruins. Today, San Gervasio is a wildlife refuge where iguanas roam free.

Xel-Ha Lagoon

This huge aquarium and water park is accessible via boat from Cozumel, and a popular excursion for families and big groups. Snorkel or zipline over the water, take a river tour, or enter the Ixchel Grotto for a crystal clear, secluded swim.

Playa Mia Grand Beach Park

This beach resort and has everything you’d expect—water slides, play areas for kids, pedal boats, kayaks, and more for a day’s worth of fun activities for the whole family.

Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park

Cozumel and the surrounding are famous for their coral, sponge, and fish populations. In nearby Quintana Roo, Mexico, Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park is a site where you’ll find abundant coral reef structures. Divers and snorkelers shouldn’t miss the chance to plunge into the depths of this protected wildlife sanctuary.

Swim at Playa Palancar

Rent an umbrella and post up at Playa Palancar, one of Cozumel’s quieter beaches. Of course, Playa Palancar has Cozumel’s signature warm, greenish-blue waters, so it’s easy to swim or snorkel the afternoon away while you’re there.

Get Up Close With Dolphins

Swim with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery Cozumel. This activity is perfect for families and children of all ages looking to spend an unforgettable afternoon with dolphins on your Cozumel cruise. You’ll also have the chance to see manatees and sea lions while you’re there.

Sit on one of the restaurant’s multicolored chairs while you enjoy what some call the best burritos in Cozumel.

Culture & History of the Cozumel Cruise Port

When the Mayans settled in Cozumel two thousand years ago, they dedicated the town to the Mayan goddess of fertility and love, Ixchel. The word “Cozumel” means “Land of the Swallow” in Mayan, symbolizing Ixchel’s favorite bird. Spanish settlers didn’t visit Cozumel until the 16th century, when the Cortés expedition traveled through. In 1520, Spanish crew members brought smallpox to Cozumel, devastating the Mayan population.

Cozumel’s popularity as a tourism destination skyrocketed in the 1960s when word of the island’s scuba diving potential traveled through the grapevine. Diving and charter fishing became central to the economy of the island. Today, Cozumel is a major port of call, welcoming over a million cruise passengers annually.

Cozumel Port Facilities & Location

The Cozumel cruise port is on the Western side of the island, where there happen to be three piers in total. The International Pier is one of the oldest and most-trafficked port areas. It’s about two miles to reach San Miguel, which you can access either on foot with a long walk or take a ten-minute taxi ride from the cruise port terminal. You’ll find food, shopping, and complimentary WiFi beyond the terminal.

Transportation in Cozumel

You can rent a car while in Cozumel to get to the far reaches of the island, including some of the nature excursions and harder-to-reach parks. For daredevils, a scooter or bicycle is an exciting way to navigate the island. Helmets required. Then, of course, there are plenty of taxis at the cruise terminal and around the island. Taxi drivers know their value on the island, so be sure to settle on a fare before you drive off. Of course, it’s easy to explore areas surrounding the port on foot if you feel like stretching your sea legs during your stop in Cozumel.

Shopping Near the Cozumel Cruise Port

After you disembark from the cruise ship, particularly at International Pier, you’ll find duty-free shops and souvenir shacks before you leave the terminal. The Royal Village Shopping Center is also conveniently located near International Pier, where you can purchase handmade goods, jewelry, and other items. San Miguel also has plentiful shopping just two or three miles away from International Pier.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Though the local currency is the peso, many stores will accept U.S. dollars (USD), so you likely won’t need to exchange money. Find ATMs near the cruise docks for all your withdrawal needs. Tipping is encouraged, particularly for bartenders, tour guides, and restaurant service. A tip of 15-20% is recommended.

Where to Stay in Cozumel

The top neighborhoods.

  CENTRO SAN MIGUEL DE COZUMEL

San Miguel de Cozumel is the heart of the island and the largest city. This is where the majority of hotels and restaurants are located, and it’s a very walkable town. You’ll find San Miguel de Cozumel, also known as Centro, is on the west coast of the island, roughly centered between the north and south. This is where the Cozumel Airport (COZ) and the ferry to Playa Del Carmen are also.

  NORTH HOTEL ZONE

There are a number of resorts and beachfront hotels scattered along the island’s western shore in the North Hotel Zone, just north of town. While most of the all inclusive resorts are in the South Hotel Zone, there are several great beachfront hotels and resorts in the North Hotel Zone as well. Accommodations located in this neighborhood are close to the airport and a short taxi ride (or long walk) to the town center. This also makes restaurants and shopping in town very accessible.

  SOUTH HOTEL ZONE

The South Hotel Zone is a hot spot for the major all inclusive resorts and beautiful nature reserves such as Chankanaab and Punta Sur. The south hotel zone is significantly outside of the town center, so renting a car or taking taxis will be necessary to get around the island. This is a great area to stay in if you are looking to avoid the city and just enjoy the spectacular nature and peace. There are many beach clubs and snorkeling areas in the South Hotel Zone, as the sea here is part of the Marine Preserve.

My husband and I took a vacation to Cozumel for our anniversary and stayed at Secrets Aura Cozumel. We had such an enjoyable time. The restaurants were all great and the pool was relaxing. Thank you for adding this hotel to your list.

Thank you for these great suggestions. My family and I are going to use this guide when looking for places to stay on our next vacation in Cozumel.

Happy to help. Enjoy your visit!

We decided to go on an adults only getaway with our family members and I am so glad I found your post. It was so easy to choose our resort based on your info here. Thank you. We ended up at the Explorean and it was perfect.

A friend recommended we look at your site before booking our hotel and after we read this post we decided to stay at an all inclusive. You make each place sound phenomenal so it was difficult to make a choice but we just booked the Cozumel Palace and are looking forward to our trip. Thanks for your help!

The one thing we wanted was to stay at one of the famous all inclusive resorts in the Yucatan, after searching through so many different websites this was a great find. Helpful in every way. I am sure this post will be a lifesaver for many others as well. Cheers.

Getting to paradise.

When you arrive to Cozumel by cruise ship or staying in a hotel, the easiest way to get to Paradise Beach is by taxi. The rates might vary depending on the distance.

If you are visiting from Cancun or Riviera Maya you need to go to Playa del Carmen’s ferry pier and take the ferry to Cozumel (we advise you to verify the departure times and rates beforehand). Once in Cozumel, taxis are readily available at the ferry pier.

6 Best All-inclusive Resorts in Cozumel

Cozumel’s beautiful beaches, world-class diving, and tropical landscape set the scene for these top-rated all-inclusive resorts.

cozumel cruise all inclusive

Courtesy of Park Royal Cozumel

Mexico’s Caribbean coastline is flecked with a handful of idyllic, tropical islands that take laid-back living to a new level. But no Mexican Caribbean island is more famous than Cozumel. Home to one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean, carpeted with mangrove jungle, steeped in Mayan history, and rimmed in white-sand beaches, Cozumel is the crown jewel of Mexico’s Caribbean islands.

However, where Cozumel soars in natural beauty, restaurants, culture, and nightlife, it lacks an abundance of five-star, all-inclusive resorts, especially compared to other Mexican Caribbean destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Of the more than three million visitors that come to Cozumel every year, the majority are transient cruise passengers, which means the demand for overnight stays on Cozumel is lower than in other Mexican beach destinations. So, while Cozumel has many overnight options, visitors are less spoiled for choice in terms of luxury all-inclusives than they might be elsewhere.

Still, the few all-inclusive resorts that it does have offer their guests gorgeous views, beautiful pools, and that “leave your wallet behind” convenience. Travelers looking for the best all-inclusive resorts in Cozumel have an excellent selection. Here are our favorite picks.

Why I’m the Expert

Meagan Drillinger is a travel writer who has spent much of her 15-year career covering Mexico. She has spent years combing the coastlines of Mexico, researching the top destinations, resorts, and activities. She has explored Cozumel's beaches, protected natural areas, beach clubs, and hotels on her many visits to the Mexican Caribbean. Drillinger is currently based in Puerto Vallarta.

Also available to book at Tripadvisor.com

This resort offers many inclusions, including a private beach club, snorkeling, horseback riding, buggy tours, and sailing excursions.

The resort is not beachfront but a short walk to the beach at its sister resort next door.

While this adults-only all-inclusive resort isn't beachfront, that shouldn’t discourage travelers from checking into this intimate property. The boutique-style, sophisticated resort is brimming with extras, from daily guided snorkeling tours and horseback riding to kayaking and dune buggy driving. The family-friendly resort has a laid-back vibe, emphasizing experiencing Cozumel's natural beauty and history. Adults who want a bit of pampering can book a treatment at the on-site Na’ha spa, featuring four treatment rooms. Additionally, the beach at the nearby sister property, Fiesta Americana Cozumel, is only a quick walk away.

The Details:

  • Distance to airport: 6 miles
  • Gratuities included: Yes
  • Adult-Only or Family-Friendly: Family-friendly

Secrets Aura Cozumel

Courtesy of Hyatt

Four outdoor swimming pools (and one water slide) offer guests a variety of vibes.

The atmosphere can lend itself to a party energy, which may not be relaxing for some guests.

Secrets Aura Cozumel is a veritable playground reserved for adults only. The sprawling resort overlooks an isolated stretch of white sand beach on the island's southern end. Guests can sip cocktails at swim-up bars, get their adrenaline pumping on exhilarating waterslides, or disconnect and unplug at the palatial spa. The resort has 11 restaurants and bars and 238 rooms and suites. For travelers who like an upgrade, the Preferred section offers top-tier suites with specialty perks like welcome gifts and upgraded toiletries.

  • Distance to airport: 10 miles
  • Adult-Only or Family-Friendly: Adult-only
  • Starting rates: $268

Cozumel Palace All Inclusive Resort

Courtesy of Cozumel Palace

Spacious rooms have deep soaking tubs, balconies, and beautiful ocean views.

The beach is artificial and relatively small.

The Cozumel Palace All Inclusive is an oceanfront resort with dramatic Caribbean Sea views and direct access to a small, artificial beach. Guests don’t have to travel far from the ferry pier to reach the resort, as it’s within walking distance of downtown San Miguel and its shopping and nightlife. Guests can check into one of 175 spacious rooms and suites, each with balconies and jetted spa tubs. The resort has two main pools with a swim-up bar and a spa. For kids, Palace Cozumel is home to The Dreamery, a program that amplifies family stays with kid-friendly amenities and activities for guests. The Dreamery program is open to guests who upgrade to the Family Suite category.

  • Distance to airport: 2.5 miles
  • Starting rates: $486

Fiesta Americana Cozumel All-Inclusive

This oceanfront resort has a lovely stretch of beach.

The resort is not within walking distance of downtown San Miguel.

While The Explorean is set back from the beach, its sister resort, Fiesta Americana Cozumel, welcomes families to the oceanfront location. The intimate hotel has 102 rooms, each with a furnished balcony. Guests love the private boat dock, peppered with over-water beds for toes-in-the-sea relaxation. Two outdoor pools round out the aquatic offerings, and guests can choose from any of the five restaurants, all of which are part of the all-inclusive plan. While most guests at all-inclusive resorts tend not to venture off property anyway, San Miguel is a bit of a trek, about a 20-minute drive away.

  • Distance to airport: 5.5 miles
  • Starting rates: $258

Occidental Grand Cozumel

Its secluded location, white-sand beach, and private dock give guests the ultimate feeling of privacy.

Wi-Fi is an additional charge for non-Royal Level guests.

For guests who want to be entirely removed from the buzzy energy of Cozumel, Occidental Cozumel offers a remote, jungle-meets-sea vibe from its nature preserve perch. The resort, with a white sand beach and hacienda-style architecture, is tucked at the southern tip of Cozumel, close to some of the most impressive beaches on the island. Of course, the resort has a fantastic beach, seven restaurants, five bars, four pools, and impressive wellness facilities. Think fitness center, hydromassage tub, and a relaxing sauna. Guests can upgrade to the Royal Level, which operates like a boutique hotel within the resort and has exclusive amenities and services, from an exclusive restaurant to bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. The resort does not include Wi-Fi for regular guests, but guests who book the Royal Level have Internet included.

  • Distance to airport: 12 miles
  • Wi-Fi: Not included
  • Starting rates: $288

Grand Park Royal Cozumel

This resort has a walkable location with a lovely beachfront.

Wi-Fi is only available for free in the lobby.

Grand Park Royal Cozumel delivers if it's a beachfront location you're after. The all-inclusive Cozumel resort is just outside downtown San Miguel, with a front-row seat to the cruise ships zipping in and out of the port. Guests can lounge by the oceanfront infinity pool or on the curve of the white sand beach and enjoy the daily parade of boats cruising by. This is an excellent option for families with nightly entertainment, a kids’ club, and a kids' pool with a slide. While the views are excellent, and the resort has plenty of pool space for families to play, rooms are spartan and do not feature wi-fi.

  • Distance to airport: 4 miles
  • Wi-Fi: Included only in the lobby
  • Starting rates: $168

Know Before You Go

The beaches on cozumel’s eastern shore have less sargassum..

The Mexican Caribbean’s sargassum season can often bring heaps of seaweed onto the beaches, which can be unpleasant. However, the beaches along Cozumel’s eastern shoreline are shielded from the exposed Atlantic and often have a much lower volume of the seasonal sargassum.

Book travel insurance for hurricane season.

The Mexican Caribbean’s hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest risk of hurricanes from August to September. While booking travel insurance is generally a good idea, it is especially good during the hurricane season.

Tipping in pesos is always preferred.

Whether you're staying at an all-inclusive family resort in Mexico or one for adults-only, all-inclusive resorts typically include gratuities, but it is best to tip employees in pesos if you want to tip extra. Even though many restaurants and shops may accept dollars, it’s a hassle for employees to exchange dollars back for pesos.

More About Cozumel

The island of Cozumel is a kinder, gentler version of Cancún. It has its fair share of big resorts, but the streets aren't quite as chockablock with tourist traps. The world's second-largest barrier reef lies just off the coast, which makes this a top snorkeling and diving destination. A few Mayan ruins provide what limited sightseeing there is (aside from the island's glorious natural attractions). On the mainland is Playa del Carmen, a charming beach town that's the unofficial capital of the Riviera Maya, a string of beaches that is quickly becoming the next big destination. As you head south toward the ruins of Cobá and Tulúm, you'll find tiny fishing villages as well as a couple of ecological reserves. A few well-placed resorts mean that this area isn't entirely off the beaten path, but some areas are quite secluded.

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Top Experiences

Scuba Diving : Explore the world-famous 20-mile Maya Reef, where a profusion of fish and other underwater creatures reside. Underwater enthusiasts are drawn to the clear water, abundant marine life, and exquisite coral formations.

Taking in the Culture : Watch beribboned traditional dancers at the annual Feria del Cedral festival, one of the island's most colorful celebrations.

Partying, Local Style : Join the locals at the Plaza Central in San Miguel on Sunday nights for music and dancing that has more in common with the Caribbean than Mexico.
