Packing toiletries for air travel (especially if you’re flying carry-on only) is always the hardest part of preparing for a trip.

But since I fly carry-on only about a dozen times per year, I’ve perfected my method of bringing all my bathroom supplies with room to spare and no spillage.

Here are my best travel hacks for packing toiletries whether you’re flying with carry-on or checked luggage (including tips about how to eliminate unnecessary liquids).

14 Travel Hacks for Packing Toiletries 

Use a quart sized ziploc bag for liquids.

If you’re flying carry-on only, you’re allowed one quart-sized bag for all your toiletries that are considered liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes.

There are dozens of toiletry bags that are marketed towards travelers as being TSA compliant, but beware.

In reality, I’ve seen so many travelers get caught in the security line having to remove items from their bag because it is too large. 

All you need is a quart-sized ziploc bag !

These bags are exactly 0.97 quartz in volume, so they will always pass the TSA test. 

Not only are they the cheapest option out there, they seal airtight and watertight (which can’t be said about the zippered liquids bag).

Use Liquid Pouches Instead of Bottles 

Most people tend to use refillable squeeze bottles when traveling with liquid toiletries. Unfortunately, these take up unnecessary space.

This is because if you don’t fill up the entire bottle, the bottle still takes up the same amount of space.

And if you’re only traveling for a few days to a week, chances are you’re not going to need an entire 3.4 oz (or 100 mls) of product. 

Instead, opt for liquid travel pouches .

These take up less room than bottles and allow you to bring a bigger variety of liquids!

They come in multiple sizes and are compact and lightweight.

Since they’re a ‘pouch’ and not a bottle shape, they only take up as much space as you fill them.

I have been able to bring so many more different liquids in my carry on this way. 

Using these travel pouches are the easiest way to pack shower gel for travel.

Cut Up Bars of Soap

I always pack a bar of soap instead of body wash, and this eliminates a large amount of liquids space.

If you’re only going for a few days or a week, you can even cut a bar of soap into smaller pieces to save even more space. 

Try Toiletry Sleeves for Spill-Proof Travel 

Leak-proof all your toiletry bottles - a must-have if you're flying carry-on only!

These toiletry skins are the coolest new travel hack product. 

They’re a plastic film with one closed end that you slip over the tops of your toiletry bottles, making them completely spill proof. 

If you’ve ever tried to place a piece of plastic wrap under the cap of your bottle, this is a much better method. 

While these skins should fit travel sized bottles, they were designed for full-sized bottles if you’re checking luggage.

Use Water Activated Facial Wipes

Facial wipes have always been handy for travel, but using ones that are water activated have so many benefits. 

First, you won’t have to pack a liquid face wash or makeup remover.

Second, these these ones won’t dry out since there’s no liquid in them to begin with. 

And they also double as a wash cloth. 

The Olay Daily Facials are my favorite because they’re gentle enough for sensitive skin. 

Use a Hanging Toiletry Bag to Save Space

Using a hanging toiletry bag has been my favorite toiletry travel tip. 

Many hotel bathrooms never have enough counter space, so I use this bag to hang up in the bathroom and then I can also see everything that’s in it. 

The genius thing about this bag is that the big compartment has zippers on both ends, so if you need something from the bottom, you can access it without having to take everything out first. 

Another reason why this bag is a travel game-changer – you can pack it flat if it’s unfolded in your luggage.

Use Lotion Bars and Lotion Sunscreen 

Another favorite travel hack is to use a lotion bar or stick instead of a liquid. 

Not only is it not considered a liquid, there’s also no need to worry about it spilling or exploding! 

You can also find sunscreen that comes in a stick.

Please note that for many North American airports, a lotion stick is not considered a liquid.

If you’re in Europe, Asia or Australia, double check your airport’s rules to make sure this is allowed.

Use Shampoo Bars

One of my favorite toiletry packing hacks is to bring a sha m poo bar instead of liquid shampoo.

As an added bonus, a shampoo bar is basically a zero waste travel toiletry since there’s virtually no packaging or plastic, especially if you go with a natural based bar. 

Put Deodorant in Chapstick Tubes

To save space, in the microwave, melt down your solid deodorant and then pour it into an empty chapstick tube. You can either clean out an old one or order empty ones for cheap . 

Deodorant sticks are quite large on their own, and you won’t go through a whole tube on your trip. 

Plus, this method saves you money!

It’s a great way to use up the last bits at the end of the stick that usually just gets thrown out.

Use Multi-Purpose Products

These can also be used as a body wash, face wash and even shaving gel. Multi-purpose products to save space!

Instead of using multiple different products, find one that can be used 3 or 4 ways. 

Squalene oil can be used as a face and body moisturizer, as hair oil or even as a leave-in conditioner. 

As an added bonus, squalene oil has anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce puffiness after a long day of travel.

Or use a gentle shampoo that can also be used as a body wash, face wash and even shaving gel. 

Vanicream Free & Clear Shampoo is one of the best multi-purpose products for this, and they even come in handy travel sizes.

Use Cornstarch Instead of Dry Shampoo

If you normally pack dry shampoo, this counts as an aerosol and needs to be packed in your liquids toiletry bag.

To save space, you can use cornstarch or baby powder as your dry shampoo!

If you have darker hair, you can also mix cornstarch with cocoa powder to avoid white-looking roots. 

Contact Lens Cases for Makeup and Lotions 

Don’t throw out your old contact lens cases – clean them and use them for makeup, lotions and creams.

This is a great way to pack your toiletries without having to buy extra jars or reusable containers.

They hold the perfect amount for a weekend trip and they seal rightly so no worries about any leaking.

Otherwise, you can use these inexpensive cream jars , perfect for moisturizer, foundation, lotion, even pills.

Use 1oz Dropper Bottles

If you use hair or facial oils, order yourself some empty 1 oz dropper bottles as the perfect space-saving toiletry accessory.

Use Toothpaste Tablets 

100 tablets so you can pack this for the whole family, or perfect for an extended trip.

Another way to eliminate a liquid is by using toothpaste tablets instead of your cream or gel toothpaste.

These are especially useful if you’re going on a long trip.

How Do You Pack Toiletries for a Carry-On?

When you’re flying carry-on, pack all of your liquids, aerosols, creams and lotions in a clear, quart-size ziploc bag. 

Since a quart isn’t that big, use my tips mentioned above to reduce the number of liquids you have. 

Since you don’t have much room, I like bringing only the amount of liquids I’ll need – which is why I like the fillable liquids pouches. 

All my non-liquid toiletries (bar soap, floss, toothbrush, hairbrush, bandaids, etc) go in my hanging toiletry bag, and I pack all my liquids in the ziploc bag separately. 

When I’m the security line at the airport, I can easily grab the clear liquids bag to put in on the scanner. 

After I’m through security, I usually leave my liquids in this ziploc bag, just in case anything does spill, it’s all contained and doesn’t mess up anything else in my carry-on.

With 10 containers in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and dispensing methods, you can take a broad range of products in just the right quantities for your time away. Options are as follows: two 1-ounce spray bottles, two 3-ounce squeeze bottles, two 2-ounce squeeze bottles, two 1-ounce jars, and two 0.3-ounce jars. We were impressed by the capacity of the largest bottles, which we felt could easily hold at least four washes’ worth of shampoo and conditioner. 

The bottles are made of durable yet flexible food-grade silicone, with wide mouths for easy filling and cleaning. We appreciated the inclusion of two scoopers, a funnel, and a cleaning brush to help with these tasks, as well as a sheet of labels. Most of the containers held up well to our durability tests with no leaks or spills. The only exception was one of the jars, which suffered a broken lid. The set comes in a transparent carry bag and could fit into a quart-sized Ziploc (a TSA requirement) with some skillful maneuvering, although it was tight.

The INSFIT set is ideal for those who like to keep things simple with only a handful of essential products but also tend to travel for longer and need as much capacity as TSA will allow. It features four identical 3-ounce silicone bottles large enough to hold at least one to two weeks’ worth of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and sunscreen (or similar). The bottles are squeezable, which makes dispensing simple, although we found that thicker lotions and gels were easier to squeeze if the bottle was at least half full.

Other highlights include fully removable caps and wide mouths for mess-free filling and easy cleaning, and three-layered lids that are essentially leakproof. Even during our pressure test, caps remained securely in place, and afterward, the bottles still looked brand new. In fact, we were shocked to find out how affordable this set is given its evident quality. We also liked the stylish, see-through carry bag and the fact that there’s a special place on the caps to stick the included labels so that they adhere properly.

Made of waterproof 30D Cordura ripstop nylon with proprietary welded construction, the Matador FlatPak Toiletry Bottles are by far the most technical option on this list. With their flat-pack design and sturdy quality, they’re designed especially for adventures and expeditions where saving on space and weight is a priority . With a capacity of 3 ounces each, they’re five times lighter and 3.5 times more compact than standard silicone bottles, and pliable enough to fit into tight spaces: the ultimate backpacking companion. 

We found them easy to fill with any liquid that was the consistency of shampoo or thinner. Thicker gels and lotions were tricky since the mouth wasn’t as wide as that of standard travel bottles. Still, any mess is easy to clean off the waterproof exterior. They fit easily into a quart-sized Ziploc, and we love the snap hook for attaching to the outside of your backpack for on-the-go use. The loop also features a spot for writing a description of the contents with a permanent marker. As expected, the packs survived all our tests with zero leaks or signs of damage.

Our overall favorite was the LiquiSnugs Premium Travel Bottles set. These bottles stood out for their durable, leakproof silicone construction and thoughtful extras including adjustable labels and individual suction pads. For the most budget-friendly option, choose the small yet sturdily versatile Vitog Travel Bottles Kit .

Upon receiving the bottles, our first step was to examine their overall quality and design and note any unique features. Then, we filled at least three of the bottles in the set: one with lotion, one with micellar water, and one with shampoo. For each one, we noted how easy it was to fill without spilling, how easy it was to clean if spillage did occur, and how appropriate each bottle would be for holding different types of liquid. We also tested how easy it was to open the bottle and dispense the product inside. 

Next, we compressed the bottles in our palms to mimic pressure. We shook them, rolled them, squeezed them, and threw them to stimulate rough handling in transit, noting how well they withstood this treatment. Our final test was to put all of the bottles from the set into a quart-sized Ziploc bag, and then inside a toiletry bag. Then, we dropped them from waist height three times, always from different angles, to see whether any breakages or leaks occurred and whether the bottles showed any signs of wear and tear. 

Each set was scored on a scale of one to five for ease of use, quality, design, performance, and value. Average scores were used to determine our category winners.

Other Travel Toiletry Bottles We Tested

GLOBEGEAR Travel Bottles : This nine-piece set features a solid range of containers and tools made of hard plastic that doesn't feel flimsy. We deducted points for the skimpy capacity of the bottles, which would only last a few days or applications (and made filling the bottles difficult), though the affordable price makes this a good option for the infrequent traveler.

Kitsch Travel Containers : Fans of variety will appreciate the range of products included in this compact kit. It won't set you back much and, accordingly, we feel it also won't last long. We like the idea of the flat containers but found them somewhat difficult to fill.

Cosywell Travel Containers : The Cosywell Containers are all the same shape in 10- and 20-milliliter capacities. We found the plastic and silicone jars easy to fill and well-designed, but they're more suited to thick liquids such as gels and creams.

What to Look For in Travel Toiletry Bottles

Durability is key when choosing travel toiletry bottles since containers that are easily punctured or cracked will result in a mess that’s at best inconvenient and at worst potentially expensive or upsetting depending on how much product is wasted and whether any other items in your carry-on are affected. Look for options made out of sturdy hard plastic or thick, flexible silicone, then check user reviews to get an idea of how the construction holds up under real-life travel conditions. If you’re planning an extreme adventure, technical options like the waterproof flat-pack bottles from Matador may be worth the extra expense.

Leakproofness

A bottle doesn’t have to break for leaks to occur—all it takes is a poorly constructed seal or lid. Look for bottles with a triple-layered leakproof cap and jars with a secure screw top. Pump bottles should come with a removable clip that prevents them from being deployed accidentally. Again, user reviews help check how efficient these measures are (it’s easy for a brand to advertise their product as leakproof, even if it’s not). Some brands, like Cadence, actually guarantee the efficacy of their leakproof design. Just in case, we always recommend storing toiletry bottles in a waterproof bag or Ziploc as a second line of defense. 

If you plan on packing your toiletry bottles in your carry-on bag, you must make sure that none of them exceed the TSA-approved limit of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Some sets are made up of identical large bottles of around 3 ounces, giving you the maximum allowable capacity for each of your products. However, because all bottles must fit in a single quart-sized Ziploc bag, this limits the number of bottles to around four. 

If you have more products to pack, you may prefer a set that divides this capacity between a greater number of smaller bottles and containers—especially if you only require some of your liquids in very small quantities. The length of your trip will also dictate how big you need your bottles to be unless you only plan on using your carry-on liquids as a backup in case the full-size versions in your checked luggage get delayed. 

Toiletries can be stored in opaque, translucent, or transparent bottles of any color as long as each individual bottle does not exceed the maximum capacity limit. For carry-on bags, most authorities including TSA set that limit at 3.4 ounces. Liquids can be in their original container or decanted into any container of your choosing (even one that’s labeled incorrectly), as long as these size restrictions are adhered to. 

Most airport authorities—including TSA—rule that bottles containing liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes cannot exceed 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) if you wish to pack them in your carry-on luggage . In addition, all of these bottles must fit inside a quart-sized Ziploc bag and be screened separately from the rest of your luggage at security. Containers that exceed this limit will not be permitted, even if the volume of the product inside is less than 3.4 ounces (for example, if you have a half-used bottle of conditioner). Note that these restrictions do not apply to checked luggage.

Although toiletry bottles don’t have to be labeled from a legal perspective, many people like to do so to ensure they don’t end up brushing their teeth with expensive moisturizer, or vice versa. Some travel bottles come with waterproof stickers, especially for this purpose, and you can also purchase them separately online. This is a better option than writing on a standard office label by hand since toiletry bottles frequently get wet and ink can run and cause staining or become illegible. Alternatively, a permanent marker applied directly to the bottle could be an option if you’re always going to use the same container for the same product.

How to Clean a Travel Mug or Water Bottle

If you’re anything like me, the extent of cleaning your travel mug or water bottle is a quick rinse-out, swishing the water around before dumping it out, and then just putting the mug or bottle back on the shelf.

Until, that is, you peer inside the bottle and see … ewww, is that mold? Or until you leave your mug, not quite emptied of milky tea, in your car all day. Suddenly, doing a deep clean of that water bottle or mug becomes urgent.

Here’s how to effectively clean all your bottles and mugs.

What you’ll need

• Dishwasher basket: You’ll want one that has a lid and small holes, such as the OXO Tot , to contain small parts.
• Dish soap: We like Seventh Generation Dish Soap , but any dish soap should work.
• Bottle-cleaning brush set: Our favorite is the OXO Good Grips Water Bottle Cleaning Set . It comes with a large bottle brush, a skinny straw brush, and a looped detail-cleaning brush, all linked with a handy ring.
• Distilled white vinegar: Mix this with baking soda; the resulting fizz will help loosen caked-on drink residue.
• Baking soda: Mix this with the vinegar (see above).
• Denture tablets (as an alternative): If you don’t have vinegar and baking soda but you do have denture tablets, they’d be a good substitute. (We’ve used Target’s house brand .)
• Baking sheet: Any flattish, oven-safe pan will work.

How long will this take?

This shouldn’t take more than 45 minutes, plus the time it takes to air-dry. If your mug or bottle is dishwasher-safe, cleaning will take only as long as a cycle in your machine.

Find out if your bottle or mug is dishwasher-safe

This info should be embossed on the bottom of the container, but if it’s not, check the manufacturer’s website. If your mug or bottle can go through the dishwasher, all the better.

We’d still recommend removing any lids or other small pieces and securing them in a closeable dishwasher basket. This should keep them from washing down into the bottom of the tub, where they might get wedged against (and melted by) your dishwasher’s heating element (if it has one).

Insulated containers often aren’t labeled as being dishwasher-safe. The heat and water pressure inside a dishwasher can damage the container’s vacuum seal—and potentially degrade its ability to retain heat or cold over time. Dishwashers can also scratch or wear away the container’s finish.

How to hand-wash your bottle or mug

Most of the time, dish soap and water will do the trick. Drip a little dish soap into the bottle or mug, add some warm water, and scrub away.

You can use a sponge, if it fits all the way into the vessel. But we’ve found that most mugs and bottles are too narrow to allow your hand in far enough to reach the bottom. That’s why we recommend bottle brushes.

Depending on the design of your mug or bottle, you may need a few brushes of different sizes to clean in and around the lid mechanism, the spout, and deep into the vacuum bottle or mug body itself.

We like OXO’s cleaning set because it has three brushes of different shapes and sizes—plus, the whole set can go through the dishwasher (brushes need cleaning too!). We bought a couple of sets in the course of researching our water bottle guide , to confirm their quality, and they are as good as we thought they would be.

Some water bottles, such as those made by Purist , have linings that can be damaged by bottle brushes or abrasive sponges, though. For those bottles, we suggest rinsing them out with soap and warm water or (if they’re dishwasher-safe) putting them in the top rack for a cycle.

For stubborn residue, break out the bubbles

If you’re drinking anything besides water in your water bottle or travel mug, gunk will build up over time. In our water bottles guide, we recommend using bottle brushes and a mixture of baking soda and vinegar . You don’t need much of either.

Drop just a half-teaspoon or so of baking soda into your mug or bottle, and add approximately half a cup of vinegar. It’ll foam vigorously for a few seconds but then die down. At that point, start scrubbing with your brush or sponge.

I’ve also had good results from using denture-cleaning tablets, whose main active ingredient is sodium bicarbonate—otherwise known as baking soda.

How to clean stinky silicone parts

If your bottle or mug comes with silicone gaskets or seals—like the ones on our favorite travel mug , the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug —you may notice that over time they take on the smells of whatever you drink.

To remove the stink from your gaskets, many experts recommend burying them in fresh baking soda for two days. Marguerite Preston, our senior kitchen editor, has a better (and quicker) solution : Bake the silicone pieces in the oven. Here’s her method, adapted from a thread she saw on Reddit:

Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Most silicone cookware is oven-safe up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit or more. But because travel-mug gaskets don’t usually come with heat limits, Marguerite said she errs on the side of caution. Make sure that whatever you’re heating is 100% silicone. Do not put plastic or rubber in your oven.

While the oven is heating, carefully wash your silicone gaskets with dish soap and hot water. Then place the gaskets in the oven on a baking sheet. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Pull the gaskets out of the oven every 10 minutes or so and carefully take a whiff. After about 40 minutes, most of the stink should be gone.

If you do notice a light lingering coffee scent, it might be due to residual coffee oils still clinging to the silicone. Marguerite said she gives the gaskets an extra quick scrub to remove that residue, and the scent disappears almost entirely.

How To Effectively Clean Out Shampoo from Travel Bottles

Sometimes, I start feeling a little adventurous. Is it time for Mr. Suave to peace out in favor of Ms. Crabtree & Evelyn for a little bit? The swap is generally effortless thanks to one of the most timeless home-cleaning solutions known to man, distilled white vinegar.

Distilled white vinegar is one of the most effective remedies for cleaning gunk, grime and smells around the house. It's even a great tool for cleaning and sterilizing makeup bottles and brushes .

Quite simply, it's an inexpensive, natural and biodegradable solution that is great for effectively removing substances and smells from most surfaces. Nothing brings happiness like seeing those last dregs of conditioner float away.

Though I often dump the entire bottle of distilled white vinegar into the bottle—which is excessive—most people suggest these steps:

• Fill bottle in 1-2 teaspoons of white vinegar with hot water. (The point is to make sure you're using diluted white vinegar, not a full acidic solution.)
• Sit for 15 minutes.
• Dump water, rinse vinegar out.

In reality, I often rinse the white vinegar out with warm water and then fill it back up again with water. This gets left out overnight and in the morning, I air it. Though there's often a whiff of vinegar left, the smell usually quickly dissipates.

Plus, most toiletries are heavily scented and dominate any remaining smell without much effort.

There's also a few other methods for cleaning out these bottles, including filling with warm water and soap, followed by vigorous shaking. Finally!

Traveling with your baby or toddler is messy enough without having to worry about how you're going to get their bottles clean. A travel bottle cleaner is the solution you're looking for. And it's not just for baby bottles: It's for your big Nalgene bottles, your Stanley cups, and your toddler's sippy cups. We're pretty much all using reusable bottles and cups these days, and anyone who has accidentally left a bottle full of milk in their diaper bag for a couple of days or left their latte in their Stanley in the car over the weekend knows how truly nasty they can get. (I also love the idea of a grandparent from out of town gifting this set with kids' suitcases for a new family to encourage them to come for a visit, but I digress.)

There are a ton of travel bottle cleaners on the market, and I tested over a dozen. All of them cleaned the bottles well, some being more useful in different scenarios than others, but overall, they got the job done. The issue lay in cleaning the cleaners; many purported to be dishwasher-safe. Readers, friends , this turned out to be total hogwash. All but a few of the cleaners melted on the top rack of the dishwasher. So take to heart when buying these that many need to be hand-washed.

My pick for Best Overall, the kit by Munchkin , did not melt, nor did the OXO bottle cleaning kit . Everything else I tested melted. The Boon kit also remained intact, but the brushes were too small to be that useful.

Another note I should make, some of the travel cleaners like the OXO are made mostly for the basin of the bottle or cup, and therefore weren't great with bottles like Dr. Browns, or for sippy cups and travel cups that need a slimmer brush to get in the straw and around the more intricate bits.

These all tested well as far as cleaning and convenience of travel; however, I will mark which ones are actually dishwasher-safe. Find your next on-the-go essential below.

Munchkin Details Bottle and Cup Cleaning Brush 4 Piece Set with Key Ring

It has almost 6,000 perfect reviews on Amazon, and it's easy to see why. It is, far and away, the best travel bottle cleaner that I tested. It cleans everything from the inside of a straw to the threads of a bottle's nipple. All four pieces hang from a keyring and the whole thing can be placed on the top rack of the dishwasher, or with the silverware. Nothing gets lost or melted, and everything gets clean.

OXO Tot Travel Size Drying Rack with Bottle Brush

OXO makes really high-quality home goods, and the travel bottle cleaning kit is no exception. It's a cleaning rack and bottle brush combination that folds up to be about the size of a wipes carrying case. The whole thing can be placed on the top rack of the dishwasher.

I love how well this cleans the inside of bottles and cups, but I do wish that it had a straw cleaner. However, a bendable straw cleaner would fit inside if you bent it in half.

TechoEcho Travel Baby Bottle Brush Set

I loved everything about this set except for the fact that the top melted in the dishwasher. However, it is not hard to hand-clean at all. It comes with a bevy of useful accessories, with my favorite being the little spray bottle to hold soap or a sanitizing agent. It's compact — no bigger than a travel mug — and has everything you need to clean any bottle and most sippy cups.

The tops of the bottles are silicone, which I thought that I would hate, but I found that I really appreciated how soft it was.

Beiyunee 7-in-1 Bottle Brush Set/Travel Brush Cleaner Kit

I love the little ring-shaped holder on the straw brush with this kit. It made cleaning almost fun? (I know, I know, but it's true.) I may have put it on my middle finger to clean an especially gross sippy cup.

It's not as compact as the OXO, but it's not a ton bigger and is every bit as useful as a drying rack. Don't put it in the dishwasher, but it does come with a little pump bottle for soap.

If the cup were just a hair more robust, this would have been my favorite travel set. What it lacks in a drying rack, it makes up for in the size of the cleaning utensils and the compactness of the kit.

I want to get across to you just how compact this kit really is despite having full-size tools. It is significantly smaller than my 32-ounce Stanley cup and fits easily in a water bottle pocket in a diaper bag or backpack. For vacations, day trips, or just to have at home, this is a stellar kit.

How to keep toiletries from leaking and spilling in your suitcase

It's the kind of thing you never think about until it happens to you, and then you can't ever forget it. The first time I had a liquid leak in my suitcase , it was an oil — some sort of elixir or tonic that's supposed to make you young forever — and it oozed and seeped through everything in the bag.

It's enough to make you leave all of your potions and lotions at home and just use whatever you find at the hotel. Which works fine ... until it doesn't.

Now that major hotel brands are ditching single-use bath products in favor of more environmentally-friendly (and better-for the-bottom-line) reusable dispensers, many travelers may decide they'd rather pack their own toiletries than gamble on what's inside the bulk bottles.

So, if you're not interested in taking your chances on, well, whatever the heck is growing in those shampoo and conditioner dispensers, how can you pack your toiletries so they don't explode during the flight and ruin all of your belongings?

Remove excess air

One of the easiest ways to keep bottles from exploding or leaking during a flight is to squeeze out any excess air that may be in the bottle — an especially pesky problem if you're traveling around with a dozen half-used toiletries. That's because the changing air pressure can cause gases to expand and move about their container.

"It [helps] to put a little piece of plastic wrap over the top of [a] bottle before screwing on the lid ...." TPG reader Chelsey T. told the TPG Lounge on Facebook.

Bring a bottle designed for travel

Not all dispensers, jars and tubes are created equal, and if you're planning on regularly packing products in your suitcase, you may want to invest in a container created for the task. TPG readers swear by the 3-ounce soft-touch dispensers from the Container Store , as well as Muji's array of travel containers and cases .

There are also more advanced products meant to keep your toiletries organized, secure and TSA-compliant. Matadors's travel bottles pack flat when empty, so you don't have to worry about taking up extra space or weight in your suitcase (at least on the return home).

No matter which container you choose, you'll never have to worry about measuring out 3.4-ounce pours of product.

Another tip? Look for screw-top lids whenever possible. Or, at the very least, avoid tilt-cap lids.

"Recently, I made the mistake of bringing along a bottle of hair conditioner with a tilt cap," said TPG contributor Irene S. Levine . "Never again. The pressure of something in my suitcase leaned against it, tilting the cap. The contents poured into the Ziploc but didn't get anywhere else. Saved by the Ziploc!"

This, of course, leads us to our next point.

Store toiletries in a plastic bag

Hopefully, your toiletries never explode under pressure or leak. But sometimes — just sometimes — spillage can be a result of operator error. So, in case you screw on a lid all crooked or forget to close a cap, be sure to stow anything with the potential to seep, drip or dribble in a resealable plastic bag.

"Depending on what the toiletry is," said TPG contributor Rita Juanita Pike , "I may double or even triple layer [Ziploc bags]."

Along those lines, bringing an empty baggie for a potential trip home if the outbound is a bit messy isn't the worst idea we've ever had.

And if you want to take this whole sustainability thing full circle, ditch the plastic bag for a more eco-friendly option. Adventure travel writer and photographer Marielena Smith said she uses the reusable Flanabag AirQuart Travel Bag , which is a clear, quart-sized pouch that will make you forget about torn, flimsy plastic bags.

Choose solid bath products

Best for: Sustainable Travelers

Why We Like It: You can stow everything from medication to macaroni and cheese inside.

What You Should Know: Thin hard plastic breaks easier than silicone.

The design resembles a contact case, but the materials are durable enough to last years. There are three sizes to choose from at the time of posting—small, medium, and large—and five color combinations. Whether you want to organize your medication, bring along a liquid too dense for a standard set of travel sized bottles, or want a way to bring delicate snacks on the plane, the humangear GoTubb has you covered.

The tubs are BPA-free, PC-free, and Phthalate-free. Plus, they’re FDA food safe, so you can also eat out of them. The top screws on and is easy to remove when you’re ready to access whatever you’ve got stowed inside.

The hard plastic exterior is easier to break than silicone, especially if heavy gear is loaded inside your daypack . However, we haven’t had any issues with these travel containers breaking. Even if you aren’t sure what you’ll stow inside, the GoTubb almost always comes in handy once on a trip!

Why We Like It: No more wasteful toothpaste minis.

What You Should Know: Not much use outside of toothpaste.

There are a ton of travel size bottles and travel containers out there, but we haven’t found nearly as many that work for toothpaste. Matador’s reputation for filling the gaps of available travel products continues, enabling you to refill your toothpaste without as much environmental impact.

The Matador Refillable Toothpaste Tubes are designed with toothpaste in mind, so it works as well as one of the mini ones you get at the dentist’s office. However, when it’s empty, you refill it from the larger toothpaste container you have at home instead of buying another mini for your next trip. This keeps excess plastic out of landfills and is cheaper because mini toothpaste containers cost more per ounce. Think about what you can do with all of that toothpaste money!

Whereas most of Matador’s gear can be used for numerous things, there isn’t much use for their Toothpaste Tubes outside of dental hygiene. However, you use it twice daily, so we think it’s worth splurging on.

The lens case consists of a transparent cup (the cup) and a connected unit of screw cap, lens holders (baskets) and the neutralizer catalyst disc attached at the bottom. CLEAR CARE® PLUS and the special lens case must always be used together.

The preservative free, aqueous CLEAR CARE® PLUS contains: hydrogenperoxide 3%, phosphonic acid (stabilizer), sodium chloride (0.79%), phosphate (buffer system), PLURONIC® 17R4 † (a cleaning agent), and HydraGlyde® Moisture Matrix (EOBO-21® – polyoxyethylene-polyoxybutylene, especially for silicone hydrogel soft lenses).

To ensure proper disinfection of your lenses, you must follow the instructions completely. Do not skip any steps. Always wash, rinse and dry your hands before handling your lenses. This will help prevent eye infections by removing dirt and oils that could get on the lenses.

Never put CLEAR CARE® PLUS on your lenses and insert directly into the eye. Otherwise, burning and stinging will result. If spillage occurs, clean up immediately with a paper towel. Wash, rinse and dry your hands before handling your lenses or touching your eyes. 

1. Remove and place each lens into the appropriately marked L/R domed lens holder, and thoroughly rinse with CLEAR CARE® PLUS for 5 seconds. 

• Open the lens holder marked “L”. Remove your left lens and place it on the dome. Close the lens holder taking care to avoid damaging your lens. 
• Repeat the procedure with your right lens by placing it on the dome of the lens holder marked “R”. 
• Open the snap cap (flip top cap) on the bottle of CLEAR CARE® PLUS and bend it back and out of the way. 
• Taking care not to splash yourself, thoroughly rinse the lenses in the lens holders with CLEAR CARE® PLUS for 5 seconds.

2. Fill the CLEAR CARE® PLUS lens cup to the fill line with CLEAR CARE® PLUS and place the lens holder in the lens cup. DO NOT UNDERFILL OR OVERFILL.

3. Tighten the cap (finger tight) on the CLEAR CARE® PLUS lens cup and store lenses for at least 6 hours. DO NOT SHAKE THE LENS CASE. 

• Store the CLEAR CARE® PLUS lens case upright. 
• If bubbles leak from the hole in the top of the lens case cap, non-neutralized CLEAR CARE® PLUS may be present. Empty the solution from the lens case and thoroughly rinse the lens cup and lens holder with sterile saline or fresh CLEAR CARE® PLUS. Clean up any spillage with a paper towel. Wash your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses or touching your eyes. REPEAT THE DISINFECTION PROCEDURE ABOVE. 
• Allow lenses to soak for at least 6 hours to neutralize solution.

4. After washing, rinsing and drying your hands, remove your lenses from lens holder. If desired or recommended by your eye care professional, rinse lenses before insertion with sterile saline. Your lenses are now ready to wear.

Just follow these simple steps and you’ll be good to go: 

• Wash, rise and dry your hands    
• Place lenses in the baskets and rinse for 5 seconds with solution    
• Fill the case to the fill line with the solution    
• Put the case and lid together and tighten    
• Soak overnight or for at least 6 hours, this time is required to completely neutralize the cleaning hydrogen peroxide solution to a gentle saline

How to Clean a Travel Perfume Bottle

Travel perfume bottles are handy containers to pop into your purse or a carry-on bag. If you want to try out a new scent or update your traveling perfume, you may be worried about old perfume residue left in your traveling bottle. Fortunately, atomizers are surprisingly easy to wash out. To clean out your perfume bottle, create a mixture of dish soap and water in an empty spray bottle, pump it through your traveling bottle, and make sure all the soap is gone by rinsing it with warm water.

Making a Soap and Water Mixture

• Do not try to spray the excess perfume from your atomizer back into its original bottle. This will most likely create a mess.
• You can either buy an empty spray bottle or use an atomizer from a product that you’ve used up. If you use one from an old product, rinse it out super well before you put water and soap into it.
• Use a mild dish soap that doesn’t have much of a scent.

Tip: If your perfume bottle has a lid that can be taken off, just pour the water and dish soap directly into your perfume bottle.

• If your mixture is too soapy and the bubbles overflow out of the bottle, it could leave soap residue in your perfume bottle that is hard to clean out.

Pumping the Mixture Through Your Bottle

• If you use the same spray bottle that had your soap and water mixture, make sure to rinse it out thoroughly to get rid of any soap residue before you use it again.

Tip: Test to see if all of the perfume is gone by spritzing the last few pumps of water onto your wrist. Smell your wrist to see if you can still smell any perfume. If you can, you may need to clean out your perfume bottle again.

Packing toiletries can be the bane of an organized traveler's existence. First, there's the agony of making sure everything -- liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, pastes, and powders -- fits within the TSA's carry-on guidelines . Then, you have to worry about shampoo bottles and makeup leaking and making a gooey mess in your suitcase. We can't have that. There's a better way. The first step to keeping your toiletries organized (and clean) is to pack them in their own case. Look for a dopp kit or toiletry bag with lots of pockets for easy storage, as well as plastic components, so you can easily wipe up any spills. Take some time the night before your flight to get organized. Lay out all the toiletries you use in a typical day plus anything extra you’ll need for vacation, like stronger sunscreen or insect repellent. Decant your large products.

If you’re checking a bag, you can get away with bringing a full-size bottle of conditioner on vacation. However, we’re proponents of packing light at all times. Save the extra suitcase space for souvenirs and decant your favorite full-size products into travel-size bottles. Do you notice that when a spray bottle is fresh from the store, it does not expel its contents during the first couple of pressing? That is because of how the pump mechanism works. When a spray bottle is still unused, the pump chamber is still empty. It needs the springing up motion of the actuator to allow it to fill its chamber first. Naturally, the contents will only come out at the second or third press once the chamber has already filled up.

To allow the liquid contents to travel from the bottom of the bottle into the pump, they pass through a thin passage called the Dip Tube.

The Dip Tube is connected to the bottom of the pump and extends to the very bottom of the container. Its bottom is usually cut into a “V” shape or at a diagonal angle to prevent the tube from clogging.

Get a mug and fill it with hot water. Place the mug in your kitchen sink. Very carefully, take the dispenser (without the bottle) and submerge the bottom of the Dip Tube in the water. Make sure that the Insert faces the sink and away from your body. Then, pump the spray several times to allow the water to flush the whole dispensing system thoroughly.

4. Remove The Labels (If Any)

While the spray part gets a flushing treatment, the bottle also needs to have its label removed.

Rinse the bottle with warm water first. Then, with gloves on, soak the bottle into a deep basin with steaming hot water. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before pulling it out with tongs.

Hold the bottle with a towel and begin peeling off the label while it is still hot.

If the label does not come off completely, soak the bottle in water with baking soda. Try peeling off the label after about half an hour.

5. Disassembling

Disassembling and reassembling your spray bottle may be the trickiest part of cleaning it. We only recommend this step if you are confident in doing it. There is a considerable risk of breaking the spray bottle parts or even injuring a finger or two.

By now, you should have already separated the bottle from the dispenser. Disassembling mainly concerns the dispenser only, so you can put the bottle aside.

First, dry off the dispenser with a clean rug for a better grip, then hold it in your hand. Make sure that you study it as well as you can. One by one, try to take out its individual parts. The actuator ot the dip tube would be the best part to start with.

Do not try to separate all the parts. Some parts such as the gasket and the pump mechanism are not intended to be taken apart.

Keep in mind that you will put everything back together again later, so you must take note of where each part should go.

At the least, you should have five different segments after disassembly:

• The Dust Cap
• The Actuator with the Insert
• The Closure with the Gasket and the Pump Mechanism
• The Dip Tube
• And the Body / Bottle

6. Soap and Water

After separating the spray bottle parts, place them in a basin and wash them with warm water and dishwashing soap. Use a cotton swab for hard-to-reach parts such as the threading of the bottle and the closure, and the inside of the actuator.

Rinse all the parts generously with water. It is important that you leave no soap on them.

7. Sterilizing

Your bottle may appear all clean and shiny at this point. However, they need to be clean at the micro-level. Soap and water alone are not able to kill 100% of bacteria and viruses present in the surface of the bottle parts. The best way to do this is by sterilizing it.

With parts still dismantled, sterilize the spray bottle just like how you sterilize baby bottles. You can boil them for a couple of minutes or you can also steam them. However, make sure to take out any plastic parts before applying heat.

Because spray bottle dispensers are mostly made of plastic material, we do not recommend that you sterilize them in your oven. The plastic parts may not be able to withstand the oven’s heat.

After sterilizing, leave all the bottle parts to dry off completely. Place them on top of a clean towel in a clean area where there is a good amount of sunshine.

9. Reassembling

With clean, dry hands, you can now begin reassembling the spray bottle. Make sure that all parts are securely in place and that nothing is loose.

10. Air flushing

Lastly, give your spray bottle an air flush. With nothing inside the bottle, simply press the actuator several times. This is to make sure that there is no moisture trapped in the dispensing system.

There you go! Your spray bottle is now clean and ready to be reused.

Is your water bottle making you sick? Probably. Here’s how to fix it.

School is back in session and chances are you’re packing a backpack with some kind of reusable water bottle in the side pouch. Chances are also that the water bottle is grosser than you think.

If you aren’t sure the last time you checked out what the inside of your water bottle looked like, you’re not alone — especially if you’re a lover of an insulated bottle that keeps your drink cold all day (like we are). The opaque metal makes it hard to tell what’s floating around inside, and the long narrow shape makes the water seem like it came from 20,000 leagues under the sea.

However, studies show not properly cleaning your beloved H2O companion can be bad for your health. That’s because everyone loves water — and bacteria do, too. It’s as essential for their survival as it is ours. According to Marianne Sumego, a primary care physician with Cleveland Clinic in an article published by the clinic , “everything that touches our reusable water bottles can transmit bacteria.”

The Cleveland Clinic says bacteria that builds up in your water bottle can cause you to experience symptoms similar to food poisoning. While it would take quite a bit of bacteria to get you sick, a study conducted by the BBC’s “Reliable Sauce” podcast found that there was an average of 20.1 million bacteria per milliliter in the 10 water bottles they tested — the public toilets that they tested had 600 bacteria per milliliter.

The brand itself recommends gentle dish soap and a scrub after each use (yes, you should be cleaning it every day). For their products that are more difficult to clean, they recommend putting ¼ cup of rice and 3 ounces of distilled white vinegar into the bottle, shaking vigorously for a minute, and leaving it to sit for five to 10 minutes. Shake it again, then empty the flask, rinse with warm water, and leave it open to dry.

Hydro Flask help

There was a time when escaping the Hydro Flask craze seemed impossible. Although the hype has died down in the last couple of years, it still remains a top competitor in the market.

If you’re dealing with a thin Hydro Flask, it may be time to purchase a bottle cleaning brush, which can help you reach the nooks and crannies of your bottle with ease. The brand even sells a brush catered to their bottles, but you can find similar models on Amazon.

One of the positives of the Hydro Flask is they are dishwasher safe. You can separate the lid, straw, and tumbler and place them in your dishwasher for a simple clean.

For a periodic deep clean, they recommend mixing a half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with two tablespoons of baking soda.

The structural downside is the rubber casing on the lid used to hold the straw in place, the perfect moist alcove for mold and bacteria to grow.

The lids are all dishwasher safe, and the company website recommends separating the different parts and using a straw brush for the smaller nooks to thoroughly clean the bottle. Soaking the parts in distilled white vinegar also helps break up buildup in areas that are difficult to clean.

Now that we’ve taught you the “how” of cleaning your water bottle, all that’s left is the “how often?” The Owala website puts it best, responding to a query that asks how often the bottle needs to be washed.

Let's Clean your Hardworking Water Bottle

Your Chilly Moose reusable bottle has been working overtime all Summer long. We've got some tips to help you give it a solid deep clean and a little TLC so you can keep your hydration fresh with each refill.

Cleaning a Chilly Moose stainless steel bottle is pretty straightforward. Here’s a simple guide to keep it fresh and hygienic:

DAILY CLEAN

Rinse with Water. After each use, rinse the bottle with warm water to remove any residue. Use a Bottle Brush: For a more thorough clean, use a bottle brush to scrub the inside. This helps get into all the nooks and crannies. Mild Soap:   Add a small amount of mild dish soap to warm water and use the brush to clean the interior. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleansers or bleach as they can damage the stainless steel.

Vinegar and Baking Soda: For a deeper clean, fill the bottle with warm water, add a couple of tablespoons of baking soda and a splash of vinegar. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Then scrub with a bottle brush and rinse thoroughly. Dishwasher : Chilly Moose single-colour powdercoat bottles and tumblers are dishwasher safe. Place the bottle on the top rack only. Please note, bottle and tumbler lids are not dishwasher safe and should always be handwashed.

*Harbour White, Great Lakes and Woodland drinkware styles are not dishwasher safe and should be handwashed to maintain the finish.

DEALING WITH ODORS

Baking Soda: Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with warm water, fill the bottle, and let it sit overnight. Rinse well the next day. Lemon Juice: Lemon juice can also help neutralize odors. Mix with water, let it sit, and then rinse thoroughly.

DRY COMPLETELY

Air Dry: Allow your bottle to air dry completely with the cap off to prevent mold and mildew. You can place it upside down on a drying rack.

DON'T FORGET THE LID, GASKETS & STRAWS

Remove and Clean: Most Chilly Moose bottles have easy-to-remove lid gaskets. Take apart any removable components like the lid, seals, or straws. Wash them all separately with warm, soapy water. To clean straws, use a small straw brush to scrub the interior. Rinse everything well and allow to air dry before reassembling the lid components. Regular cleaning helps maintain your Chilly Moose bottle's appearance and ensures you have perfectly fresh hydration with each and every sip.
