Thereafter, Maharana Fateh Singh built the Connaught Dam on the Lake to mark the visit of Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria in 1888 AD. The dam enlarged the lake and was later renamed as Fateh Sagar Lake. It is one of the four beautiful lakes in the city, the other three being the Lake Pichola, Udai Sagar Lake, and Dhebar Lake or Jaisamand Lake. Fateh Sagar is 2.4 km length, 1.6 km width and 11.5 meter in depth. During the monsoons, the lake covers the total area of .....

The main entrance to the temples is made through a door that has carved lintels and a multi-lobed arch in its middle. Both the structures are laid out on a same plan having an altar, a mandapa (columned prayer hall) with projections and a porch. The temple of Sas is comparatively larger than that of the Bahu. 2 Days in Udaipur Itinerary: Ultimate Guide to the White City of India

Lake Pichola in Udaipur

Thanks to its five lakes, Udaipur has often been dubbed the Venice of the East or the City of Lakes , and it’s one of my favourite cities in Rajasthan (and the rest of India ). This Udaipur itinerary for 2 days is perfect for first-timers . It will bring you to floating palaces, beautiful temples and breathtaking viewpoints.

Surrounded by the Aravalli hills, Udaipur was founded in the 16th century as the new capital of the Mewar Kingdom. It would remain like this until 1818 when it became a British princely state.

Today, Udaipur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Rajasthan and it’s easy to understand why. With its serene lakes, colourful markets and peaceful gardens, it’s a city that does not disappoint.

I spent three weeks in Udaipur and this itinerary includes the highlights of my trip here. Let’s dive right into it!

Udaipur Itinerary: Day 1

Lake Pichola in Udaipur

8:30 am: Lake Pichola

Gangaur Ghat on Lake Pichola

We’ll start the first day of this itinerary by exploring Lake Pichola and its surroundings. Lake Pichola is undoubtedly Udaipur’s most famous sight. It’s thanks to this artificial lake that Udaipur is considered the most romantic city in Rajasthan .

Some of the sights you cannot miss during a visit to Lake Pichola are Gangaur Ghat and Ambrai Ghat . You will have a beautiful view of the lake from both of these places. Note that you will have to pay a small fee (and an extra fee if you want to take photos) to visit Ambrai Ghat.

🥐 Lake Shore Restaurant is a nice place to have breakfast near Ambrai Ghat. You will have a stunning view of the lake here!

10:00 am: Monsoon Palace

Monsoon Palace in Udaipur, Rajasthan

The Monsoon Palace, also known as Sajjangarh Fort , is 10 km (6.2 mi) from Udaipur’s old town. You will need to take a rickshaw to get to the entrance of the palace, and then you can either take a jeep or walk to the top of the hill. The hike up takes approximately 1 hour.

This palace was built for Maharana Sajjan Singh in 1884, and it offers a stunning view over Udaipur. It’s believed that the Maharana built it here to get a view of Chittorgarh, his ancestral home and the previous capital.

Fun fact: The Monsoon Palace is also famous for being featured in the James Bond movie Octopussy.

12:30 pm: Lunch

Head back to the old town for lunch. Some of the rooftop restaurants I liked that are close to the Jagdish Temple (which is next on this itinerary) are Café Boho and Savage Garden (which is on top of Edelweiss Café).

1:30 pm: Jagdish Temple

local places to visit in udaipur

After lunch, it’s time to head to the Jagdish Temple , which is the largest one in Udaipur. This Hindu temple was completed in 1651 and its architecture is simply stunning. You will find numerous statues of elephants, horsemen, musicians and dancers on the structure’s facades.

This temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and according to the legend, the marble slab inside the temple has healing powers. It’s believed that if you rub your shoulders, knees or back against it, it will relieve pain.

2:00 pm: Ahar Cenotaphs

Royal Cenotaphs of Udaipur

A place that’s often overlooked on a Udaipur travel itinerary is the Ahar Cenotaphs , also known as the Royal Cremation Grounds . These are a 4 km (2.5 mi) drive from the Jagdish Temple, so the easiest way to get there is by taking a rickshaw.

Cenotaphs are small tomb-like structures built in honour of kings, queens and other important people. The Ahar Cenotaphs contain more than 250 of these structures. They were built by the Maharanas of Mewar approximately 350 years ago and they’re pretty impressive!

This is a nice place to enjoy some peace after strolling around the bustling streets of Udaipur’s old city.

💰 It’s good to know that there is no entry fee for visiting the Ahar Cenotaphs. There are guides at the entrance that will ask you for money if you want to take pictures, but this is not official. I gave them 40 INR but you don’t have to give them anything if you don’t want to.

4:00 pm: Saheliyon-ki-Bari

 Saheliyon-ki-Bari Park in Udaipur

The last stop of the day is Saheliyon-ki-Bari (Garden of Maids in English), a romantic garden that’s a 15-minute rickshaw ride from the Royal Cenotaphs.

These gardens were built by Rana Sanga of the Mewar dynasty to offer the queen and the maidens a peaceful getaway from palace life and political issues. You will find marble elephants, a lotus pool and multiple fountains here. It’s the perfect place to relax after a busy day of exploring Udaipur.

🥗 Rainbow Restaurant is another great place to have dinner with a gorgeous lake view. It’s located in the old town; a 40-minute walk or a 15-minute rickshaw drive from Saheliyon-ki-Bari.

Udaipur Itinerary: Day 2

9:30 am: city palace.

City Palace of Udaipur in Rajasthan

After breakfast, it’s time to head to the City Palace, a place that you cannot miss on a visit to Udaipur. Its mix of Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles will take your breath away.

The City Palace was built in 1553 and it’s the largest royal complex in the state of Rajasthan. It was built at the demand of Maharana Udai Singh II when he moved the capital from Chittorgarh to Udaipur.

Inside, you will find splendid halls, amazing palaces, beautiful mosaics and an interesting museum.

11:00 am: Boat ride on Lake Pichola & Jag Mandir

Jag Mandir on Lake Pichola in Udaipur

Next, it’s time to head to the Lake Pichola Municipal Boat Ride Point, which is located opposite the City Palace. From here, you can take a boat ride on Lake Pichola and make a stop at Jag Mandir, the palace, which has now been converted into a hotel, in the middle of the lake.

This boat trip will offer you spectacular views over the lake, the ghats and the City Palace, and it’s one of the top things to do in Udaipur!

12:30 am: Lunch

A great place to have lunch in Udaipur’s old town is Sun & Moon Cafe , which is a 15-minute walk from the City Palace. This place claims to have the highest rooftop in the city. I don’t know if this is true, but there’s no denying that the view from their rooftop is spectacular!

1:30 pm: Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

View from Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway in Udaipur

The Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway is located 1,5 km (0.9 mi) from the old city, so you can either walk or take a rickshaw to get there.

This cable car ride will take you to Machhala Hill , where you will find the Sri Karni Mata Temple . Although the temple isn’t that spectacular, you will find an amazing view over Udaipur here, which is what makes it worth heading to this hilltop!

Note that you will still have to walk up some stairs to reach the temple and viewpoint once you get off of the cable car.

4:00 pm: Explore the old city, shop for souvenirs and look for street art

Souvenir shops in India

Head back to the old city, which is located around the Jagdish Temple and the Clock Tower (Ghantaghar), and explore its little alleys.

If you’d like to shop for some nice souvenirs from India , this is the perfect place to do so. You will find many shops selling colourful clothes, beautiful jewellery, traditional paintings and more. Do make sure to haggle before buying something, though.

Keep an eye open for the colourful street art and murals that are scattered all over Udaipur’s old city while you’re there. These are Rajputana paintings and their use dates back to the Mewar era.

6:30 pm: Dharohar Dance Show at Lok Dharohar Haveli

Rajasthani dances at Bagore ki Haveli

Head to the Dharohar Dance Show at Lok Dharohar Haveli for the last evening in Udaipur. Here, you will get a taste of traditional Rajasthani dances, and it’s quite impressive, to say the least!

From puppet dances to Rajasthani women balancing (a lot of!) pots on their heads while dancing, it’s a spectacular show that you will definitely remember.

Although there are cultural Rajasthani dance performances in other cities in Rajasthan too, the one in Udaipur is known to be the most spectacular one, so don’t miss it!

⏰ The show starts at 7 pm but make sure to come early to get a good seat. The doors open at 6:30 pm but you can buy your tickets in advance (or book them online via the Dharohar Folk Dance website).

Many tourist attractions are within walking distance of one another, but not all of them. Besides walking, the easiest ways to get around in Udaipur are the following:

  • Rickshaw: Although you will have to negotiate the price in advance, taking the rickshaw is a great way to get around in Udaipur. You will find rickshaws nearly everywhere in the city.
  • Ola: When travelling in India, the Ola app is a true lifesaver. This app will allow you to book a car, rickshaw or bike to pick you up and bring you to your destination for a fair price. This way, you won’t have to haggle, as rickshaw drivers try to charge 10 times the local price for foreigners.
  • Taxi: The most comfortable way to get around is by taking a taxi, but note that this is also the most expensive one.
  • Rent a bike or car: If flexibility and freedom are things that you value, then renting a car or a bike to get around Udaipur is the best option.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

Like many places in India , the best time to visit Udaipur is between October and March , when it’s not too hot. This is a great Asian winter destination .

In April and May, it will be very hot, as this is summer in India, and the monsoon season is between June and September. I visited Udaipur during the monsoon, in July, and although there were dry days, it did rain a lot.

Udaipur, Rajasthan: Essential Things to Do + Places to Visit

Udaipur is a great place to decompress and enjoy life after traveling around India for a while. Breathtaking scenery, friendly locals, and lots to see and do.

Lori and I count Udaipur as one of our favorite destinations in all of India. With the right information and mindset, we may very well feel similarly after a few days.

In this article, we share our favorite  tourist attractions ,  places to eat , and things to do in Udaipur in two to three days—plus where to stay in Udaipur,  how to get to there  from Jaisalmer (and Jodhpur) and much more!

Our Favorite Things to Do in Udaipur, Rajasthan

Wandering the city’s ancient roads & alleyways.

local places to visit in udaipur

No matter how you end up in Udaipur, it’s hard to deny that this is one great city to wander around in for a few days.

While certainly showing its age (much of the city dates from the 16th century, after all), Udaipur is a beautiful place built around a handful of lakes and surrounded by dramatic mountains.

Owing to its historic city center and dramatic scenery, Udaipur has served as the setting for a number of Hollywood and Bollywood movies, most notably the James Bond movie Octopussy , which they really play up in these parts. In fact, a number of venues offer daily screenings of the film.

Udaipur is also popular for weddings and honeymoons and is often billed as the most romantic city in India.

Walking around central Udaipur not only gives you a sense of the history and culture of this amazing city, but also offers endless opportunities for getting lost in its bustling streets and winding alleyways.

And the best part is, you never know what you may find around the next corner…

Chatting Up Shopkeepers & Perusing Local Shops

Udaipur shopkeeper

Chatting up the locals in the city center was also one of our favorite things to do in Udaipur.

This part of town receives a lot of international tourists, and local residents here seem to speak a lot more English than we’ve encountered in other cities across India.

But the best part about chatting up locals in central Udaipur might just be the relaxed atmosphere and absence of the high pressure touts we’ve encountered in places like Agra, Varanasi, and Delhi.

Checking Out Udaipur’s Historic Havelis

historic haveli

Take the time to tour one the multitude of Havelis (historic mansions) in Udaipur. The city is full of these beautiful places!

Or, better yet, stay the night in one!

We recommend checking out Jagat Niwas Palace for the ultimate 17th century Udaipur Haveli stay in the heart of the the city, just steps away from the City Palace. Jagat Niwas features Ayurvedic massages, horseback riding, folk puppet shows, and one of the best lake-side restaurants in Udaipur!

Just northwest of Jagat Niwas, check out Amet Haveli for another excellent heritage stay near the center of Udaipur’s best attractions. Amet Haveli may be a bit farther away from the action than Jagat Niwas, but the reward is amazing views of the City Palace and Udaipur skyline.

We stayed in Dream Heaven Haveli and enjoyed our time there. However, that was a few years ago and reviews aren’t so stellar these days. But if you’re looking for an economical place to stay near the heart of the action with A/C and phenomenal city views, Dream Heaven Haveli might fit the bill.

Visiting the Ghats of Lake Pichola

Udaipur at sunset

Ghats are those steps you see in a lot of river and lake towns in India running down into the water. Some are holy and/or historic places, while others just make for a stunning place to rest.

Ghats are some of the best places to visit in Udaipur for spectacular views and unique insights into daily life.

Four ghats you should definitely check out are Gangaur Ghat (the “ultimate sunset point” in town), Ambrai (Hanuman) Ghat for stunning city views and delicious food, Laal Ghat , a holy site for pilgrims and devotees, and Nav Ghat , the city’s boat dockyard.

One important thing to note about Lake Pichola is the variable water level. We visited Udaipur toward the end of the monsoon season when the lakes were at their deepest. Yet, large portions of the lake actually dry out for much of the year, making for a popular recreational area for residents (see below).

Touring the City Palace

Udiapur City Palace

You can’t spend three days in Udaipur without visiting one of the most historic and beloved places to visit in Udaipur—The City Palace.

Heck, the palace is so conspicuous, it’s virtually impossible to escape a view of it!

The City Palace is actually a number of separate palaces constructed over a span of 400 years. The entire complex is now a museum open to the public, except for Shiv Niwas Palace and the Fateh Prakash Palace which both have been converted into heritage hotels.

inside Udaipur City Palace

The palace houses a number of artifacts, paintings, and decorative furniture once used by its former royal residents.

City Palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur, so make sure you buy your tickets as soon as you arrive in town.

Taking a Boat to Jag Mandir

jag mandir places to visit in udaipur

Part of our City Palace ticket included access to the palace boat docks from where you can catch a ferry out to Jag Mandir , one of Udaipur’s famed lake palaces.

While it’s not the Lake Palace ( Jag Niwas ), it’s certainly worth the journey and the time strolling around the grounds.

There is a cafe operated by a local hotel group within the palace courtyard. However, if you’ve spent the last month backpacking around India like we have, you may find the cafe prices a bit hard to stomach.

taj lake palace places to visit in udaipur india

From the ferry to (and from) Jag Mandir, we got a close-up view of the famous Taj Lake Palace Hotel (not to be confused with the Taj Mahal in Agra or Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, of course).

Scenes from 007’s Octopussy were filmed here and now it’s an exclusive hotel.

For many visitors, Lake Pichola is a highlight of their visit and one of their favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

Getting a Mehndi Henna “Tattoo”

Mehndi tattoo india

If you’ve got a few days in Udaipur, you might as well get some ink done.

Mehndi art “tattoos” aren’t really tattoos at all, but intricate ink (henna) designs that fade after about two weeks.

mehndi tattoo in India

Lori’s Mehndi, a day or two later, after the paste had dried and fallen off. We were pretty impressed with the work.

Make sure you choose a reputable place to get your Mehndi done, as less scrupulous parlors across India have been known to use caustic chemicals that can leave permanent scars. It’s also worth noting that some people have reported allergic reactions to the henna dye. With all that said, Lori’s experience was very positive.

Seeing the 17th century Jagdish Temple

jagdish temple

Jagdish Temple  was located very close to our guesthouse, but we waited to visit it until our last full day.

Call it temple burnout or just bigger fish to fry in Udaipur, but Jagdish ended up at the bottom of our shortlist of things to do in Udaipur.

But we were so glad we did fit it into our visit and encourage others to visit as well.

Jagdish Temple is not to be missed if you happen to be in this part of town. It quickly became one of our favorite places to visit in Udaipur.

Day Trip to the Monsoon Palace

udaipur monsoon palace

We enjoyed viewing the  Monsoon Palace  at sunset every evening from our guesthouse balcony. And eagerly waited for a weather window to visit the famous landmark.

Even if you’ve only got a few days in Udaipur, the Monsoon Palace is so iconic, we still recommend you try to fit a visit in. The best way to do so in a limited timeframe is by going with a tour.

There are a number of tour companies in the city center that offer day trips, and many guesthouses and hostels can also arrange a trip as well

If you aren’t able to squeeze a visit in, not to worry. There’s plenty to keep you busy in town!

Our Favorite Restaurants & Cafes

dream heaven guesthouse places to visit in Udaipur

We found Udaipur to be a most agreeable place in no small part due to the food!

Udaipur has a great selection of cuisines and the food is top-notch, not to mention that the views at some of the places we ate were worth the cost of the meal, alone.

Here are a few of our favorite eating places to visit in Udaipur:

Dinner at Chandni, Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel

Chandni at Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel topped our list of favorite places to visit in Udaipur for dinner—a bit pricey for India (ran us around US$13 and we generally share a thali or entree/appetizer) but well worth it.

The dining room is in a really cool setting surrounded by the palace with a great view of the lake.

The restaurant serves Indian, Continental, and Chinese dishes, but they are known for their local specialties.

Dinner at Ambrai

Ambrai was perhaps our second favorite place to eat in Udaipur, with great views of the city, and within a short walk of our guesthouse.

Also a bit pricey by India standards (US$10 splitting a meal), but worth it. Most people seem to visit Ambrai for the atmosphere and the tasty tandors!

Breakfast at Namaste Café & Café Edelweiss

These two cafes are right next to each other, offering good coffee, tasty pastries, sandwiches, and European breakfast offerings that were better than most attempts we’ve come across in India.

If you’re from Europe or North America and missing a taste of “home,” these two places might quench your craving.

Getting to Udaipur from Jaisalmer (via Jodhpur)

local places to visit in udaipur

Note to our readers: Please be aware that train and bus information in India changes frequently and that this information is subject to change.

Taking the Train from Jaisalmer or Jodhpur to Udaipur

Udaipur is located in the northwestern state of Rajasthan, about 250 miles southwest of Jaipur.

Coming from Jaisalmer, it wasn’t immediately clear how to get to Udaipur, as there is no direct rail link between the two cities, which we found incredibly surprising given India’s vast network of rail.

Even if we had backtracked to Jodhpur, there’s still no direct service, even though Jodhpur and Udaipur constitute two of the most significant population centers in the state and are only about 150 miles apart.

We did find, however, that if you wanted to travel exclusively by rail , you can take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, then hop the train to Marwar Junction, change for Ajmer Junction, then on to Udaipur — a very long journey for a very short distance!

Or…better yet…you can do what we ended up doing and take the overnight train from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur and catch the early morning express bus to Udaipur , which only took us about five hours and cost far less than piecing together a rail journey.

And best of all, it’s a surprisingly scenic ride over mountains and through jungle (more on that below).

Taking the Express Bus from Jodhpur to Udaipur

In India, the government buses generally seem to be the safest based on our own experience and from what people have told us. We’ve found them to be reliable and generally on-time as well.

To catch the government bus in from Jodhpur to Udaipur, we got off the train from Jaisalmer a stop early at  Raika Bagh , rather than taking the train all the way to Jodhpur station. Raika Bagh is where the government bus stand is located .

From the train station, it’s less than a five-minute walk out and around to the bus stand.

Our overnight train from Jaisalmer arrived at 5:10am and the bus to Udaipur was scheduled to leave between 5:30am and 6:00am. We purchased tickets for the bus at the bus stand right before departure, and were satisfied with the level of comfort and safety of our bus journey.

Private Transfer from Jodhpur to Udaipur

If that all sounds like to much work (or you just don’t want to mess with a 5:30am departure), there are plenty of private shuttle options available too.

Wow, such a beautiful article you have shared. Udaipur is a very attractive place, I would recommend that everyone should visit this- city of lakes at least once. I have also visited some places in Udaipur Rajasthan. Really Udaipur is a beautiful place, its culture is mind-blowing.

Udaipur is a nice destination for travel. Lot’s of things are there in Udaipur, and most of the different things are culture. Great historical places in Udaipur. You shared the info about Udaipur travel is very helpful for tourist. Great guidance!

Hi David, you wrote an excellent blog! 🙂 I need a suggestion on which boat tour you opted for on the city’s boat dockyard? I am looking for a decent boat ride in lake Pichola and please mention the price also.

Hi Ravi, thanks for your comment! When we visited a few years back, there weren’t nearly as many options for lake tours as now. Our boat tour was included in the price of the City Palace entry fee, and we were simply told afterwards to head to the landing to catch the boat. If we were visiting in 2021, we’d combine the boat tour with a city tour and probably do something like this one .

Thanks for sharing it with me David. I Will definitely go through the itinerary. Grey langurs image is great. Did you go near to them?

Glad to hear it, Ravi. No, we stayed a distance away. But they were fun to watch!

Regal City of Lakes and Palaces

local places to visit in udaipur

Udaipur, Rajasthan's "white city", is often called the most romantic city in India because of its famed lakes and palaces. Therefore, it's only natural that they feature prominently in the top things to do in Udaipur. Experiencing Udaipur is all about reliving royalty and appreciating the city's regal beauty.

Check out these places to see around Udaipur too. There are many interesting day trips and side trips to go on. If you don't mind the heat, try and catch Udaipur's biggest festival, Gangaur, in March or April (it happens a couple of weeks after Holi each year). The Mewar Festival is held alongside it and celebrates the region's culture.

Explore the City Palace Complex

Elena Odareeva/Getty Images

How did Rajasthan's royal rulers survive after India became a democracy and their states merged into the Union of India? They converted their palaces into hotels and tourist attractions in order to generate an income. Udaipur's City Palace Complex , belonging to the Mewar royal family, really sets the standard as far as such heritage tourism is concerned. This all-encompassing destination incorporates two authentic palace hotels (see below) and the City Palace Museum . Plus, a collection of vintage cars and Jag Mandir, a pleasure palace on an island in the middle of Lake Pichola. It's the largest palace complex in Rajasthan.

Wander Through Bagore Ki Haveli

Bagore Ki Haveli provides a further fascinating look into the lifestyle of the royal family and culture of the region. This sprawling mansion, built in the 18th century on the edge of Lake Pichola at Gangaur Ghat (where you can sit by the water), was once the residence of the Prime Minister of Mewar. It was converted to a museum after five years of restoration work in the late 1980s and is a joy to wander through. Inside there are more than 100 rooms, courtyards, and terraces, many with beautiful frescoes and fine mirror work. Royal paintings, costumes of the kings, personal items, and traditional Rajasthani arts and crafts are on display. There's also a puppet gallery and turban collection with the world's biggest turban. The Haveli is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. A folk dance performance and puppet show is held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Boat on Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake

Zzvet/Getty Images

Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake (to the north of Lake Pichola and connected by a canal) are the most popular of Udaipur's man-made lakes. A boat ride on Lake Pichola gives a whole new perspective on the city, especially the City Palace Complex. There are a couple of options, depending on what you want to see and how much you're prepared to spend. To visit Jagmandir Island, you'll need to take one of the boats that depart from Rameshwar Ghat in the City Palace gardens (a small fee is payable to enter the City Palace if you're not staying at a hotel there). Tickets cost 500 rupees per person for the regular boat ride during the day, and 800 rupees per person for the sunset boat ride. Cheaper public boat rides depart from the jetty at Lal Ghat. A lesser-known option is to get a boat from Dudh Talai adjacent to Lake Pichola. You can explore Fateh Sagar Lake by renting a boat from the bottom of Moti Magri (Pearl Hill).

Soak Up the View from a Rooftop

pawopa3336/Getty Images

The numerous rooftop restaurants on Lal Ghat, Gangaur Ghat and Hanuman Ghat provide a fabulous panorama of Lake Pichola. For something special, including a superb view of the the City Palace, head to Upre by 1559 A.D. atop the Lake Pichola Hotel near Hanuman Ghat. On the other side of the lake, Sun and Moon Restaurant on the rooftop of Hotel Udai Niwas at Gangaur Ghat is sought-after for its view. At Lal Ghat, try the rooftop restaurant at Jaiwana Haveli or Jagat Niwas Palace Hotel .

Watch the Sunset at Ambrai Ghat

Udaipur has many vantage points for photography but arguably the best one is Ambrai Ghat, especially at sunset. It's located directly opposite the City Palace and also fronts the Lake Palace hotel, so you have an unsurpassed view of both as their lights are turned on. To get there, head to the Hanuman Ghat area and keep walking along the road that runs parallel to Lake Pichola as far as you can, past the Amet Haveli hotel and Ambrai restaurant. Do be aware that Ambrai Ghat is a popular local hangout for couples. (Of course, locals know the most romantic spot with the best views in the city!)

Visit Jagdish Temple

This imposing white Hindu temple, with intricate architecture and carvings, is an unmissable landmark in the Lal Ghat area near the entrance to the City Palace. It was built by Maharana Jagat Singh in 1961 and houses a black stone idol of Lord Jagannath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu who's regarded as the preserver of the universe in Hinduism. The highlight here is the evocative aarti (worship ceremony) every sunrise and sunset.

Take a Heritage Walking Tour

TkKurikawa/Getty Images

A heritage walk through the streets of Udaipur is a great way to immerse yourself in the City of Lakes and Palaces. The Walk Down Memory Lane tour conducted by Walk and Pedal is one of the best. You'll get to see goldsmiths at work, witness temple rituals, visit quaint shops selling everything from shoes to books, and enjoy panoramic city views. Also check out the dawn and dusk tours conducted by Vintage Walking Tours . In addition, this insightful Udaipur Heritage Walk offered by Virasat Experiences is recommended for engaging with local artisans. It provides an opportunity to meet communities that make jewelry, pottery, and bamboo craft. You'll learn about local traditions, customs, and beliefs too.

Stay at an Authentic Palace Hotel

Blaine Harrington III/Getty Images

Udaipur's mystical Lake Palace hotel appears to float in the middle of Lake Pichola. It was built by the Maharanas of Mewar as a pleasure palace in the 18th century. The royal family restored and converted it into a palace hotel in 1963, and then leased it out to the luxury Taj hotel group in 1971, as a way to maintain it. A further restoration was undertaken in 2000, making the property one of the finest heritage hotels in India. It has even had a Hollywood moment when scenes from the famous James Bond Octopussy movie were filmed there. The only way to visit the hotel is to stay at it, so splurge and treat yourself to at least one night of indulgence! The Taj group recently took over the management of the Fateh Prakash Palace Hotel , inside the City Palace Complex, too. The other option for an authentic palace stay is the Shiv Niwas Palace Hotel . It also features in Octopussy.

Sample Traditional Mewari Cuisine

RakeshPicholiya/Getty Images

The Rajput rulers of the Mewar region, who founded Udaipur, were avid hunters. Meat-based dishes are therefore a feature of Mewari-cuisine, in contrast to predominantly vegetarian Rajasthani food. Laal maas (red mutton curry) is an iconic Mewari dish that's fiery hot. Apparently, the royal cooks spiced it up to hide the aroma of the game meat that was used at the time. The dish has a prominent place on the menus of restaurants that serve Mewari food in Udaipur including Hari Ghar , Khamma Ghani , Upre , Ambrai , and Paantya at the City Palace. In addition, the Bedla family serve recipes that have been handed down over generations at their heritage restaurant Royal Repast , located in their home.

Take an Indian Cooking Class

Corey O'Hara/Getty Images

Udaipur is a fantastic place to expand your culinary skills by taking an Indian cooking lesson. You'll learn all about the different spices and secrets to preparing Indian food. Sashi's cooking classes are among the most popular. She has a reputation for being a friendly and lively teacher, and she conducts introductory classes twice a day with her son at her place at Gangaur Ghat. Mamta's cooking classes are recommended too. She offers four different menus, ranging from basic to super deluxe. The classes take place for lunch and dinner daily near Chandpole. Alternatively, Sushma provides cooking classes at the Krishna Niwas Guesthouse at Lal Ghat. You can choose the individual dishes you want to prepare. The extensive options include north and south Indian dishes, Rajasthani classics, and desserts.

Get a Dose of Culture and Shop at Shilpgram

Shilpgram (meaning "craftsmen's village") is a rural arts and crafts complex, located on the outskirts of Udaipur. It was set up by the government in 1986 to showcase rural life and traditions from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa. The complex has huts from each of the states, incorporating their distinctive architectural features. Artisans also sell their wares and perform folk dances. Horse rides and camel rides are offered as well. The complex really comes alive during the 10-day Shilpgram Arts & Crafts Fair in late December.

Buy Art or Make Your Own

Atlantide Phototravel/Getty Images

Udaipur is renowned for its traditional art, particularly the colorful miniature paintings that originated there in the 16th century. A recommended place to buy them is Gothwal Art near Gangaur Ghat. The lovely owners of this gallery are artists themselves and prices are very reasonable. It's possible to learn the technique by participating in a workshop, such as the ones offered by Vedic Walks . Jal Sanjhi is another rare 200 year-old art form that can be learned in this painting demonstration . It involves painting on water and is a tribute to Lord Krishna. If you're interested in other types of art and handicrafts, this Spirit of Art tour comprises visits to a block printing center and book binding shop, painting demonstration, and sword making demonstration.

Give Some Love to Rescued Street Animals

Animal Aid Unlimited

Animal Aid Unlimited runs one of India's busiest street animal rescue services and hospitals. More than 75,000 animals have been treated there since the organization was founded in 2002. The sanctuary is home to about 150 animals including cows, donkeys, dogs, and cats. It's a happy place that encourages and welcomes visitors. You'll be able to play with and comfort the animals, and receive a whole lot of love back from them. Tours take place throughout the day at the following times: 10.30 a.m., noon, 2.30 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available.

Ride Around Udaipur on a Bicycle

Wade Andrew/Getty Images

Feeling energetic? The Art of Bicycle Trips introduced bicycle tours in Udaipur in 2013 and they've become a popular way of seeing the city. Their three-hour lakeside city loop will take you through the countryside past the major lakes (Pichola, Fateh Sagar and Badi), mountains and small rural hamlets. On the way, you'll be able to spot various birds and animals. The tour runs daily from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and costs 2,000 rupees per person.

See the Cenotaphs of the Royal Family

prill/Getty Images

Off-the-beaten-track yet just east of the city center, the Ahar cenotaphs honor deceased members of the Mewar royal family. There are 372 white marble cenotaphs that have been constructed over centuries at the place where the bodies were cremated. About 20 of them belong to past kings and hold great significance. The site also has a holy step well, and small archeological museum that's dedicated to ancient settlers of the area.

Relax in Udaipur's Regal Garden

Guillaume CHANSON/Getty Images

Continue tracing the heritage of the Mewar royal family at Saheliyon ki Bari (Courtyard of Maidens), which was built by Maharana Sangram Singh -- popularly known as Rana Sanga -- next to Fateh Sagar Lake in the 18th century. This elegant garden served as a recreation space for the royal ladies. It's filled with a lotus ponds, sculptures, marble pavilions, fountains, trees, and more than 100 rose bushes. The impressive cascading rain fountains were added by Maharana Bhupal Singh in the late 19th century and imported from England. These days, the garden attracts many local families, and young canoodling couples who aim to get privacy away from prying eyes.

Admire the View from Monsoon Palace

The Monsoon Palace (also known as Sajjan Garh) can be seen from Udaipur, perched high on a hill above the city. As its name suggests, it was a favored destination of the royal family during the monsoon season. The palace belonged to the Mewar royal family until it was placed in government hands. Despite its dilapidated condition, it's a popular sunset spot due to its unsurpassed view over Udaipur. Those who are familiar with James Bond's Octopussy movie will also recognize the palace as the home of the principal villain, Kamal Khan. The drive to the palace takes around 30 minutes and passes through Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary Biological Park. Auto rickshaws aren't allowed to enter the park. So, it's best to rent a car or take the special minivan that departs from the entrance to Bagore ki Haveli at 5 p.m. daily.

Get Wild at Sajjangarh Biological Park

Veena Nair/Getty Images

Sajjangarh Biological Park surrounds the Monsoon Palace and can be visited on the way. The main attractions are trekking trails and a zoo. As far as zoos in India go, it's not bad, with spacious enclosures spread over a wide area. Electric golf carts can be rented to see all of it at a cost of 50 rupees per person, or 400 rupees for a private cart. There are about 20 types of animals and reptiles including lions, tigers, leopards, sloth bear, deer, ostrich, porcupines and turtles. The park is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Tuesdays. Entry tickets cost 35 rupees per person for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. Do be aware that many of the animals sleep during the day, so it's best to visit after 4 p.m. You'll probably want to give it a miss if you don't have children though.

Ride the Mansapurna Karni Mata Ropeway

Nicole Silvestri/Getty Images

Red cable cars ferry sightseers on short trips (five minutes one-way) up the hill from Deen Dayal Park at Dudh Talai to Karni Mata temple . There's a viewing platform there, and it's another notable location for seeing the sunset over the city. Do be aware that the line and waiting time to buy tickets can be lengthy. Tickets cost about 100 rupees, round trip, for adults. There's an option to pay more to skip the line, which is highly recommended.

Have a Romantic Meal in the Lake view Restaurants

Okay, it doesn’t have to be a romantic meal with someone, you can enjoy some solitude here on a solo trip too. But, having dinner beside the lake is a must for a complete Udaipur City feeling. Unless you experience it, you won’t be able to see why people called Udaipur the  Venice of the East.

Spend an Afternoon Around the Badi Lake

Bada Lake, Udaipur

I have been to Udaipur City twice but it was only on my second visit that I was able to explore the Badi Lake which I am glad that I did. This lake is situated a little away from the city which makes it peaceful and beautiful to explore.

You won’t hear a sound here and can easily spend a couple of hours just looking at the mountains and the surrounding lake water.

Trust me, one of the best things to do in Udaipur is to head out to this lake and spend an entire evening here. This such a unique lake that you won’t get bored of looking out at the views here.

How to Travel Locally

Since Udaipur City is small, you don’t have too many transportation options here as most of the places are at walkable distance. However, if you don’t wish to walk the entire day then here are a few ways to explore Udaipur City.

Auto-rickshaws

One of the major modes of transportation in the Udaipur City are auto-rickshaws which charge 75 – 100 INR for a 2-3 km distance. You will find auto-rickshaws at all the junctions and streets. But you would need to bargain a lot to get them to lower the prices.

If you have Ola app installed then you can Ola Autos here too.

Taxis and Cabs

Apart from the Autos, you have had an extensive network of Uber cabs here which cover most of the corners. The prices are decent but a lot of streets are one-way in Udaipur so they might drop you before your destination.

Walking and Cycling

One of the best ways to explore the Udaipur City is by walking or hiring a cycle. You can hire a cycle for a day for 100 – 200 INR and can easily cover most of the attractions here.

But if you don’t mind walking then you can easily walk to the City Palace, Fatehpur Lake, Ambrai Ghat, etc.

Where to Eat in Udaipur City

Pav Bhaji at Vinod Fast Food

I am a foodie but I am not a person who believes in going to expensive or fancy hotels/resorts. So, here are a few places which I tried in the Udaipur City for budget meals which were delicious at the same time.

Natraj Restaurant

Natraj Restaurant is one of the oldest eateries in Udaipur City and is certainly one of the best too. You get the most delicious Daal Baati Churma here. But if you are craving some other cuisines, then you will get that here too.

They make particularly nice north Indian meals and have decent pricing. So, a meal for two people will cost about 400 – 500 INR .

Note: This is a purely vegetarian restaurant.

Al Rehmaniya Lake View Restaurant

For people who crave non-vegetarian, Al Rehmaniya Lake View Restaurant is a good choice. Here, you get the most delicious Laal Maas and also get a variety of chicken and other meat dishes. A meal for two will cost about 300 – 400 INR for two people and will be quite filling.

Vinod Fast Food, Fateh Sagar Lake

This is probably one of the cheapest eateries in the Udaipur City and serves the most delicious Pav Bhajis ever. You will also get a delicious Kulhad Coffee here and can try other snacks here like sandwiches, chowmein, dosa, and so on.

A meal for two people will cost about 200 – 250 INR here.

Note: Once you are done with your meals, make sure you try the Kulfi here. There are many Kulfi stalls available throughout Udaipur. It will cost just 20 INR per person and will be mouth-watering.

Where to Stay in Udaipur City

Moustache Hostel, Udaipur

Udaipur city is a popular traveling destination so you will find several hostels, hotels, and resorts for your accommodation. Here are a few accommodation options to consider for yourself.

There are several hostels here that you can consider like Hostelavie , Hostel Moustache , Zostel , Gostops, etc. Most of these hostels will offer you a bed in the range of 100 – 600 INR for a night. It will include all the bathroom amenities, WiFi, entertainment options, etc.

So, you can check on Booking.com or Goibibo.com for the best options and reserve your place in these hostels.

Hotels/Resorts

Apart from the hostels, you also have some beautiful hotels and resorts here like the Oberoi Udaivilas, Taj Lake Palace, etc. But these resorts will be quite expensive. So, if you are on a budget then booking in these hotels might not be a wise idea.

You can check mid-ranged hotels like Treebo, Baghol Palace, Mewargarh Palace, and so on. They will cost you about 1000 – 2500 INR for two people for a 2-night stay. Again, you can check the Booking.com to find the cheapest rates for your stay here.

2 days are definitely less to explore all the best places to visit in Udaipur and won’t even begin to cover what all this place has to offer.

However, sometimes, we are bound by our jobs and commitments so we have to make the best out of the available time. If that’s the case, then this Udaipur travel guide will come handy for you and will allow you to plan a kickass trip to Udaipur.

18 Amazing Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Posted on Last updated: January 19, 2021

Categories INDIA

Planning 2 days in Udaipur and want to know all of the best places to visit? Great, because we have got you covered. In this guide, we bring to you what we consider to be the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. We also include the best places to eat, where you should stay, and all of our top tips, so that you can spend less time planning and more time enjoying this magical city.

It is no secret that we fell in love with Udaipur, the White City of India .   The serenity of the lakes and the surrounding nature, had us forgetting that we were even in a city at all.   We adored the hippie boutiques and choice of amazing restaurants . And we loved how we didn’t feel the need to always be doing something.  In fact, to find a rooftop cafe overlooking Lake Pichola was one of our favourite ways to spend the day.

We ended up spending over a week in Udaipur, and I’d like to think we know the city pretty well.  We explored all of the top tourist attractions in Udaipur, and have narrowed them down to what we believe are the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.  I have also made some additional suggestions in case you have 3 days in Udaipur or more.

Anyhow, there is a lot to cover in this 2 Day Udaipur Itinerary. So let’s get to it.

Continuing your travels in Rajasthan? See our Rajasthan Itinerary , as well as articles on The Golden Triangle , Jaipur , Pushkar, and Jaisalmer to help plan your trip.

*Before You Travel to Udaipur , have you got your travel insurance sorted?  Cover yourself for the unexpected, read  why you really need travel insurance , or  get a quote from World Nomads .

Is 2 Days in Udaipur Enough?

The city of Udaipur is relatively small. Having said that, many of the top things to do in Udaipur are located outside of the city. While 2 days in Udaipur isn’t much time, by following this itinerary, you should find it enough to get acquainted with the city. You’ll certainly have enough time to cover the cities main attractions, even if it means jam-packed days.

As I mentioned earlier, we spent over a week in Udaipur; however, for most of that time, we didn’t do much at all. Thanks to its laidback vibe relative to other cities in Rajasthan, it was the ideal spot to take a little break and recharge the batteries. But, if you have limited time in India then 2 days in Udaipur is plenty.

Where to Stay with 2 Days in Udaipur

Naturally, there is no shortage of accommodation options in Udaipur, regardless of your budget or taste. Many visitors coming to Udaipur seek a lake facing hotel for the view, and with budget options available it’s worth looking into.

Most importantly, if you’re planning to spend just 2 days in Udaipur you’ll probably want to be centrally located. This way you can avoid journey time eating into your valuable sightseeing time. I’ll make some suggestions further down, or you can click the link to compare prices of all hotels, guesthouses, and hostels in the area.

From admiring the lakeside views, exploring the cities architecture, and experiencing the white cities vibrant culture, here are all the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 Days.  I have also taken the liberty of suggesting a 2 Day Itinerary, which I believe will help allow you to make the most of your time.

2 Days in Udaipur – Day 1

OK, assuming you spent the night in Udaipur, you’ll want to be out nice and early to make the most of your day. Grab breakfast at your hotel or at one of the restaurants we recommend in our vegetarian guide to Udaipur .

Udaipur Tours

With limited time in the city, it might make sense to discover Udaipur as part of an organised tour. You tend to fit in a lot more that way while removing all the stress of having to plan everything yourself. Click the link below for a full list of best-selling tours in Udaipur.

Udaipur City Palace

It isn’t without reason that the city palace is one of the top places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.   The grandeur marble & granite structure stands proudly as the landmark of the city, and we for one were taken aback by its sheer magnificence .   If we were to recommend just one City Palace to visit in Rajasthan, it would have to be this one.

We happily paid the entrance fee to discover what lay beneath the towering walls.  And despite being touristic inside, we loved exploring the labyrinth of walkways, courtyards, gardens and hidden rooms.   We didn’t accept the offer of a guide but found the tour interesting and educational nevertheless. Everything is in English so it’s pretty much self-explanatory.  You’ll also find great vistas over the city and surrounding lakes.

If you’re at all interested in the history of Udaipur , a visit to the city palace is an essential addition to your 2 Day Udaipur itinerary. You can read more about it in our comprehensive guide to Udaipur City Palace .

Entrance Fee :   330 IDR/pax & English Speaking Guide:   400 IDR/group *optional

Jagdish Temple

The Hindu devoted Jagdish Temple is the most significant religious building in Udaipur.   The captivating 16th-century structure serves as a dedication to Lord Vishnu (preserver of the universe), one of the principal deities of Hinduism.

We are always blown away by the intricately carved Hindu temples, depicting the tales of ancient Hindu legends, and Jagdish was no different.   After admiring the architecture, we were permitted to go inside the temple, where Brahmins and devotees were conducting a spiritual ceremony.   Although we are not religious ourselves, such encounters in India are always an empowering experience.

Entrance Fee:  Free – donations as always are welcomed.

Ahar Cenotaphs

Ahar is essentially a Royal cemetery for Udaipur’s late Maharajas. However, what might sound like a dark place on paper is, in fact, a spot of peace and serenity. Furthermore, if you are at all interested in  Rajasthani architecture , you are sure to be left in awe by the intricately carved stone tombs.

Located around 2km outside of the city, Ahar could be considered somewhat of a hidden gem.   By that I mean you are unlikely to run into many other tourists when visiting here.   Having said that, be wary of the sketchy looking locals who may try to charge you 250 rupees to use your camera within the grounds.  This is a common scam and as of 2019, there are no official fees.

For more info, check out our guide to Ahar Cenotaphs here .

Entrance Fee:  Free.

Lake Pichola

There are almost 20 lakes in Udaipur, resulting in its nickname ‘ The City of Lakes’ .  Out of the five most significant lakes, most of them are artificial and one, in particular, is the second-largest artificial lake in Asia.

Lake Pichola is the most well-known lake in Udaipur, and a lot of the action goes on around it.  Boasting a jaw-dropping backdrop of the Aravalli mountain range, I’d freely say it’s one of the most picturesque and serene locations in all of India. A variety of lake-facing hotels , ghats, restaurants, and rooftop bars surround the lake, so you can enjoy the view from several different vantage points.

Our favourite time of day to appreciate Lake Pichola was around sunset.  After a long day of sightseeing, enjoying a cold beer over one of the best sunset spots in Udaipur is a perfect end to the day.  We list some of our favourite place to eat and drink further down in the article so be sure to check it out.

Insiders Tip:  Sunsets on the west side of the lake.  We took this shot from Sun N Moon rooftop!

Dinner at Namaste Cafe

Namaste Cafe is one of our favourite vegetarian restaurants in Udaipur , and the incredible ‘all you can eat’ Thali is our favourite thing on the menu.   You can choose from either a traditional or Rajasthani Thali – both are vegetarian & equally delicious.

If you are visiting in the evening, be sure to check out the rooftop.   Adorned in fairy lights and overlooking a wonderful view of the city and lake, you’re guaranteed a night, and meal, to remember.

2 Days in Udaipur – Day 2

Ok day 2, and it’s set to be another busy day. We will start the day with breakfast at our favourite cafe, and move on to see some of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. So let’s get to it.

Grasswood Cafe

Grasswood was our go-to cafe every morning for breakfast, and sometimes even lunch, dinner, & dessert too! We adored their healthy, vegan-friendly menu, including delicious smoothies, salads, sandwiches, and cakes.   The coffee is also the best we found in the city.

*Travellers Discount – As well as the tasty food we were impressed with the kind hospitality.   We became such regular customers that the owner, Ashish, began giving us a discount on our orders. What’s even more generous, is that he agreed to give the same discount to our followers too.   Just mention our blog if you visit and you will get a small discount on your order.

Monsoon Palace

When you arrive in Udaipur and spot the ethereal looking castle stood proudly in the hills; that my friends is the Monsoon Palace.  This is one of the places you must visit when spending 2 days in Udaipur.    The palace once served as a royal residence to the Mewar dynasty and located 944m above sea level provides incredible panoramic views over the city.    It is famed for being one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Udaipur . Although we visited in the morning so didn’t get to witness this for ourselves.

It is important to note, that whichever transport you take to the palace, you can only go as far as the entrance gate at the bottom of the hill.  From there, you have the option to pay for the palace jeep or walk to the palace. It was a beautiful morning, and we’d indulged in unlimited Thali the night before, so we figured we would walk. To reach the top takes around 1-hr walking at a moderate pace; however, you may need to stop for breaks as it’s an uphill road the entire way.

Personally, we enjoyed the challenge as well as the scenic views the route provided. Despite a few warnings of wildlife in the area, we encountered no bother. You should, however, be wary of the colony of langurs that occupy the palace grounds.  If you have food on show, they aren’t shy about snatching it from you. Check out our comprehensive guide to the Monsoon Palace here .

Entrance Fee:  300 Rs./pax + 100 Rs/pax for Jeep *optional

Best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Fateh Sagar Lake

Another lake to add to your list of places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days is Fateh Sagar Lake.  In comparison to Lake Pichola, this lake is incredibly peaceful.     As a result, it is the perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

What we loved most about this lake, is the surrounding nature.   Not only do you have the staggering view of the mountains, but the perimeter of the lake is adorned with verdant gardens.   We recommend checking out Sunset Point Park and Maharana Pratap Samarak.

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Karni Mata Temple

Karni Mata Temple is a relatively small temple complex positioned atop a hill in the city.  Although the temple itself is only small & modest, it is the astounding views from the peak that make this an essential addition to your 2 Day Udaipur Itinerary.

To reach the peak, you must either walk the stairs or take the cable car. Despite being nervous about cable cars (especially in India), we took it so we wouldn’t miss the sunset. It was perfectly fine and the views on the way up intensified the higher we climbed.

By the time we reached the top, the sun was starting to set, casting a glorious golden glow over the city.   Thankfully it wasn’t too crowded, so we managed to grab ourselves front row seats for one of the best sunsets we witnessed in India.

When visiting the Karni Mata Temple , please keep in mind that it is a place of worship. Even if you are only visiting for sunset, it’s important to act respectfully. Here are some things to consider.

  • Keep shoulders and legs below the knee covered at all times.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the temple.
  • There is a ‘no photography’ policy in most temples; however, you could ask the priest for permission.

Entrance Fee: Free.  Cable Car – 100 Rs/pax return.

Bagore Ki Haveli Night Show

For a taste of true Rajasthani culture, the evening performance at Bagore Ki Haveli is something you cannot miss when spending 2 days in Udaipur    Set in the courtyard of a magnificent haveli, the show incorporates traditional folk dance and local talent.

We were not too sure what to expect when we arrived at the show.   (Late may I add, and there was no discount for having to stand at the back). However, without giving too much away, we found ourselves transfixed by the dancers and musicians.   This was, without a doubt, one of our favourite things to do in Udaipur.

Entrance Fee:  150 Rs/pax + additional 150 Rs to use a camera including phones (You didn’t hear this from us but If you are careful you can get away with not paying the camera charge).

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 3 Days

If you plan to spend more than 2 days in the city, here are some other suggestions for places you can visit in Udaipur in 3 days or more.

If you’re not already ‘laked-out’ , Lake Badi is another beautiful lake worth visiting in Udaipur.  It’s even more peaceful than Fateh Sagar Lake, but with the same breath-taking views.  We rented a bicycle in central Udaipur to explore the lake, and it was a really pleasant experience.  To view the lake from above you can climb to a viewpoint on Bahubali Hill .

Neemach Mata Temple

We were told about this temple on our last day in Udaipur and having visited all the other sunset spots, we decided to check it out. A tuk-tuk dropped us at the foot of the hill, and we had to climb a steep set of stairs to reach the top. There are rumours that they will install a cable car soon; however, I figure this is quite a long way off. Either way, unless you’re afraid of a short workout, the stairs are perfectly fine.

Having heard very little about Neemach Mata Temple, we didn’t have too high of expectations for the view. Therefore, we were pleasantly surprised by the spectacular panoramic vistas that welcomed us at the top. Here you can enjoy views of the city, its various lakes, and surrounding mountain landscapes, so if you find yourself at a loose end one evening, it’s definitely a sunset spot worth checking out.

Neemach Mata Temple

Traditional Yoga Class

While India is the home of yoga, the spiritual energy in Udaipur makes it the perfect environment to practice.     For a traditional yet challenging yoga class, we highly recommend Prakash Yoga .   Prakash is an incredible teacher and will help you to achieve postures you possibly have never done before.  This may not be a class for somebody who’s never done yoga before, but if you are a regular at yoga, definitely check it out.

Price: Prakash relies on a donation only as payment; however, be sure to pay what you think is fair for the class .

2 Day Udaipur Itinerary

Creativity can be found in abundance in Udaipur and taking part in an art class is a unique way to spend your time in the city.

Located within Hotel Gangaur Palace, the Ashoka Arts class comes highly recommended.   Using natural paints and silk material, the teacher will guide you to complete a traditional Rajasthani painting.

Price : 400 Rs. per class

Sunset Boat Cruise

One of the most romantic experiences you can have when spending 2 or 3 Days in Udaipur is to take a sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola. Not only can you experience the sensational views, but it may be your only opportunity to catch a close-up glimpse of the luxury Taj Lake Palace.   Unfortunately, we missed out on our sunset boat cruise after getting sick; however, it’s at the top of our list for when we return.

Price:   While there are several ghats in Udaipur where you can catch the boat, for the best price, we were advised to catch the boat from Lal Ghat.   From there, a shared boat is around 300 rs/pax while a private boat is approx. 1500 rs.

Taj Lake Palace Hotel

Now, this, of course, highly depends on your budget;   however, spending a night or 2 at the Taj Palace hotel is the ultimate Udaipur experience.   The 17th century, marble structure once served as a palace for the Mewar Dynasty.   It was later converted into a luxury hotel in the 1960s.

The majestic palace sits seemingly floating in the middle of Lake Pichola, alluring you with its beauty & elegance.   Our experience at the Taj Palace hotel was like no other… Who am I kidding?   Our backpacker budget would never stretch to this.   Maybe one day.

Insiders Tip : There are several other lake facing hotels in Udaipur that won’t break the bank.

Movie Nights

A fun fact about Udaipur is that many Bollywood and Hollywood movies have been filmed there.  The one you are most likely to be familiar with is James Bond ‘Octopussy’ and the city is clearly very proud of its Hollywood legacy.

S pecial showings of ‘Octopussy’ can be seen, every day might I add, at a number of rooftop bars and restaurants.   We aren’t Bond fans so we didn’t catch a viewing but I can imagine it would be pretty cool if you were!

Shopping & Markets

Shopping is without a doubt one of the most popular things to do in Udaipur.   Adorned with cute shops and alluring boutiques, the city is oozing with temptation.   Udaipur is also famed for its excellent tailoring stores, so if you’re looking for a sharp suit or similar, this is the place to get it.

Tips for Sightseeing in Udaipur

Here are some useful tips that I hope will enhance your travel experience in Udaipur.

Best Time to Visit Udaipur

The best time to visit Udaipur is during the India Winter which runs from October to February.  During this time you can expect perfect sightseeing weather – Ie. temperatures are cooler and there is very little rain.   If you are sensitive to the heat, you may wish to keep mornings and late afternoons free for sightseeing, as lunchtime gets hot all year round.   It’s recommended to avoid Udaipur during the months of Summer or Monsoon.

How to Get to Udaipur

AIR:  Udaipur Airport is located around 20KM from the city centre.   Daily domestic flights are available from most major airports throughout the country.

TRAIN:  Udaipur is well connected via train from most major destinations throughout the country; however, booking trains in India can be tricky.   It is advised to book at least 3 days in advance and even then you aren’t always guaranteed a ticket.  For this reason, we always used the bus network in India. You can book trains up to 6 months in advance using 12go Asia.

BUS:  Udaipur is accessible by bus from a number of destinations across India.   To check routes, timetables and ticket prices we recommend using redbus.com .   In our experience, they are extremely reliable.   They are one of the few companies who will accept payment with an International card, and they are contactable by phone should you have any issues with your journey.

Getting Around Udaipur

If you are spending just 2 days in Udaipur, the easiest and cheapest way to get around is by scooter .   The cost to rent a scooter is around 500 rs. for 24hrs; however, be aware that the Udaipur traffic can be intimidating if you’re not experienced.    You will need to have an International Drivers License should you be pulled over by police, and always wear a helmet!

Another option is to get around using taxis or tuk-tuks.   This can be cost-effective if you are in a group, but be sure to haggle as the drivers are opportunists when it comes to tourists.

Finally, OLA TAXIS operate in the city.   Ola is an app similar to Uber and we found the service extremely reliable.   As well as single journeys, you have the option to hire a car for half of the day or even a full day, and it’s almost always cheaper than a tuk-tuk.

Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Parties in Udaipur

While there isn’t much going on in terms of parties in Udaipur, there are a select few bars which serve alcohol.  Our personal favourite was Sun & Moon where we would enjoy a few quiet beers while the sunset.  They also seemed pretty relaxed about people smoking weed in there too.

While we do not condone taking drugs, if you are looking to get high, you can guarantee you will be approached by numerous tuk-tuk drivers in Udaipur looking to sell.

Social Etiquette in Udaipur

Rajasthan is one of the holiest and most socially conservative states in all of India. It’s important to keep in mind that what might be socially acceptable in your home country, is likely to be viewed entirely different here. Thankfully, most Indians are forgiving toward foreigners to a certain extent; however, to avoid unwanted attention and embarrassment, it’s good to know the dos and don’ts. In which case, I recommend this article regarding  social etiquette in India , which includes dress codes, table manners, temple etiquette etc.

At the same time, you’ll likely be surprised by some of the aspects of Indian culture. And in all honestly, you’ll probably be offended from time to time. But again, it’s important to remember that the culture is entirely different from the western world, and embracing the unique Indian culture is all part and parcel of the experience.

Be Aware of Scams

It pays to make yourself aware of the  common scams in India , so in turn, you can avoid them. There are also known to be skilled pickpockets operating in Jaipur so be sure to keep your valuables secured at all time. We use either a small padlock or compartmental bag to keep our valuables safe.

We recommend educating yourself on  Travel Safety in India  to help you avoid any sticky situations.

Recommended Apps to Download for Udaipur

  • Maps.Me : For offline maps – Just be sure you download the relevant map in a WiFi zone.
  • Google Translate Offline :  In tricky language barrier situations, this could be your saving grace.
  • OLA Taxi App : Because they are cheaper than most local taxis or tuk-tuks.

Visiting Udaipur at the end of March and with so much to read, consider and plan - your information has been so incredibly helpful - we've made so many notes...thank you.

I hope you don't mind a question or two - we need a car/driver to get us from Udaipur to Shahpura Bagh. Would you be able to recommend a driver/company ?

Would we be crazy to try to visit Chittorgarh Fort on the way from Udaipur to Shahpura Bagh ? We would probably only have about two hours to see it.

Kind regards, Colin & Johanna

Hi Petal, yes absolutely swap it if that's your preference. Hope you have a great time!

Getting around Udaipur :

Uber and Ola: Both are available in Udaipur and can be booked through an app from a smartphone. This is the best option so as to avoid bargaining and the fear of being charged more for short distances. Taxis are the best for going out of the city and one can keep track on a map.

Auto-Rickshaw or E-Rickshaw : Similar to taxis, these are open on both sides and need to be hailed manually. Though autos are now available on Uber and Ola as well, there are places with no network or internet connectivity and one has to depend on the good old manual hailing that requires negotiations.

2-wheelers on rent – You can easily rent 2-wheelers or bikes in Udaipur. There are shops in many places offering these services. Gearless and with-gear vehicles can be rented after giving a security deposit. The rent varies from Rs.300 – 500 per day.

Udaipur Heritage Walk – Heritage walk is a great way to explore the city with local guides who show tourists the offbeat places and explain the history behind them. It is a no-brainer where the visitor simply joins a heritage tour from a specified location for a specified duration. Generally, these tours are walking tours.

2 Days in Udaipur- Best Itinerary :

now let’s take you to the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days along with a complete travel guide. I know, 2 days in Udaipur isn’t enough or it can be a bit hectic to cover all of them, but you can surely maximize your time in Udaipur to cover all the best places in Udaipur.

Day 1 of Best Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Jagdish temple.

Start your 2 days in Udaipur by first visiting the beautiful temple. Jagdish Temple Udaipur is one of the most popular tourist spots in Udaipur. Situated right in the middle of the old city area, one has to pass the temple to reach the City Palace.

This 16th-century temple is a 3 storey temple and is one of the largest temples in Udaipur. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and was earlier known as the temple of Jagannath Rai.

Udaipur sightseing attractions to visit in 2 days

With stunning architecture, one cannot help but climb those steps to pay respects to the Lord. The temple has stunningly carved pillars, huge halls, decorated ceilings, and painted walls.

Note: The temple is open from 4:30 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm. Entry is free for visitors of all faiths. Photography is prohibited inside the temple.

Udaipur City Palace : Best Places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

Whether it is a first trip or a fourth, Udaipur City Palace is one of the main attractions of Udaipur and one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days. While the opulence of the Maharajas is overwhelming, the architecture is mind-blowing.

Must visit Places in Udaipur in 2 Days

No wonder it took over 400 years to create this masterpiece. Located on the banks of Pichola lake, the views of the lake from the palace are mesmerizing and vice versa.

A part of the palace still serves as a private residence but visitors are allowed to visit other areas of the palace. There are sit-outs, cafes, exhibitions, paintings, jharokhas and so much more to explore in the palace.

The palace timings are 9:30 am – 5:30 pm. The palace is rented out for marriage functions or private parties so some areas may be shut. It can get super busy, but if you go super early you might be able to beat the crowds.

The palace complex itself is beautiful and there is a restaurant that serves actual gold coffee, yes you heard it right, and it’s kind of expensive! but you can have snacks and coffee with the best views of Udaipur city Palace. Also, I recommend hiring a guide to know more about the history of the Palace.

After sunset, the palace hosts a sound and light show called ‘The Legacy of Honor’, which takes place at the Manek Chowk inside the palace complex between 7 pm – 8 pm. It is an amazing way to know the history of Rajasthan.

Cost:   INR 300 (for foreigners)

Pichola Lake

While Udaipur is surrounded by over 7 major lakes, Pichola lake is the most popular one as it is on the banks of City Palace, in the old city area. It is one of the largest and oldest lakes in Udaipur and it is famous for its beautiful scenery around it.

Basically, it has so many dining options overlooking the Udaipur city palace and offers beautiful views of the lake, While some people feel that a boat ride on Pichola is a waste of money or kind of touristy stuff but I disagree.

best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

While the boat ride from the jetty may seem like a short ride and not worth it, the Pichola boat ride can be combined for reaching Jagmandir Palace.

Alternatively, you can dine at one of the restaurants near the lake for sunset dinner and drinks. It offers good food, cocktails, plus beautiful views. I think the lake is best appreciated in the evening, so make sure you include it in your Udaipur 2-day itinerary considering it is one of the best things to do in Udaipur in 2 days.

Tour Option: Private Sunset Cruise of Lake Pichola

  • Jagmandir Palace

The boat ride fees to Jagmandir Palace deter many people from hopping in the boat and dropping this from their itinerary. But only when you go here, you know what you are missing! Built on Jagmandir Island in the Pichola lake, it is a magnificent place.

The medieval architecture and luxurious and royal surroundings make it a dream place to be in. This palace is a favorite venue for royal weddings with a huge garden and 15 luxurious rooms. The rooms, gardens, and dining area are open to the public.

Since the Jagmandir Palace is in the middle of Pichola lake, the 360-degree views are breathtaking. On one side is the City Palace and on the other is the Oberoi Udaivilas – a luxury hotel.

The best way to spend time here is to walk around the palace gardens and fountains or just chill till sunset at the cafe for a chilled beer overlooking Pichola lake and the city palace.

Since Jagmandir Palace is a private area, the entry is from the City Palace jetty and a separate ticket needs to be purchased to reach here. The boat takes a maximum of 12 riders on the boat through Pichola lake overlooking the spectacular Udaipur City Palace and drops at the Jag Mandir Palace.

shopping in Udaipur

Stroll Marekts of Udaipur for Shopping in Udaipur

Going empty-handed from Udaipur in 2 days trip is a strict no-no. Just like the rest of Rajasthan, Udaipur has vibrant bazaars and streets lined with shops selling local handicrafts, silver jewelry, leather items, textiles, etc. So much so that it is possible to get lost in the lanes and by lanes and forget your purpose for the Udaipur trip!

While there are many shops outside of Udaipur City Palace, one of the favorite shopping bazaars for tourists and locals is Hathi Pol. This shopping street starts from Jagdish temple and is full of shops selling silver jewelry, paintings, souvenirs, batik, and bandhani clothing as well as camel leather goods.

There are stores selling brass jewelry and customized painted t-shirts that deserve a look.

local places to visit in udaipur

  • Gangaur Ghat

Located near the Jagdish temple, the Gangaur ghat is just outside the Bagore ki Haveli. Considered to be the many ghats of Udaipur, it is located on the banks of Pichola lake. The locals celebrate festivals such as Gangaur Festival and Jal-Jhulni Ekadashi which is when it is extremely crowded.

While there is not much to see and do, it’s nice to hang out here for some time capturing some fleeting moments like sunset, local kids bathing or tourists enjoying a stroll on this ghat. But I loved watching the action over the ghat and it is one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days.

  • Bagore ki Haveli

Bagore ki Haveli is an old haveli that has been restored into a museum. It is right on the banks of Pichola lake. The Haveli is very beautiful with courtyards, jharokhas, decorative archways, fountains, and exceptionally decorated 138 rooms with mirror work.

The walls of the Haveli have glasswork and mural paintings. It definitely portrays the luxurious life experienced by people back in the era. Bagore ki Haveli also has four museums – The Puppet museum, the Turban museum, the Weapon Museum, and the Wedding Depiction Section.

must do activity in Udaipur Dance show

All of this can be easily seen before the haveli is closed at 5:30 pm and the entire place turns into a cultural spectacle.

Every day the haveli hosts a cultural dance program called Dharohar Dance Show which spans one hour. 4 Rajasthani dance styles are showcased by the local women, overlooking the haveli.

Daily there are 2 shows from 7 pm to 8 pm and 8 pm to 9 pm. An additional show from 9 pm to 10 pm takes place on weekends. Don’t miss this cultural experience from your 2 days Udaipur itinerary.

Day 2 of Best Places to Visit in Udaipur in 2 Days

Day 2 of 2 days Udaipur itinerary is planned to explore the main sites around Udaipur.

  • Eklingji Temple

Eklingji Temple is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Rajasthan. Located around 22km outside of the city, it is worth the visit! Eklingji Temple Complex houses 108 magnificent temples, the main one being the two-storied Shiva Temple, which houses the four-faced idol of Lord Shiva.

This 1000-year-old temple is completely made out of marble, a local stone available in plenty, and has intrinsically carved walls. I would suggest don’t miss this being one of the best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days!

Eklingji temple timings are 4:15 am to 6:45 am, 10:30 am to 1:30 pm, and 5:15 pm to 7:45 pm.

  • Saas Bahu Temple

Saas Bahu Temple is an 11th-century temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is located very near Eklingji temples and can be easily covered together. The temple, located on the banks of Bagela lake was originally called Sahastra-Bahu.

The temple does not host a deity and a major portion of the temple is in ruins, but due to its architectural magnificence, visitors are still interested to visit this temple. Every inch of this temple including walls, ceiling, and pillars has unique and intricate carvings on them.

Since this day is all about places around Udaipur, I had to include Badi lake in this list of Udaipur in 2 days. Badi lake is away from the town which is why it is still pristine and offers unparalleled views of the Aravalli mountains.

hiking near Udaipur

As the name suggests, Badi lake also known as Jiyan Sagar is an extremely big lake.

Over the last few years, many trekking trails have been developed here where nature enthusiasts can enjoy fresh and tranquil views. Although the sunset is the best time to visit, Badi lake offers splendid views, all day and all year round.

It’s quiet, beautiful, and peaceful and you might want to spend all your time there.

Shilpgram Udaipur is a one-stop shop for things handmade, handcrafted, and local. While Shilpgram comes alive during its annual festival, it has a plethora of things to do, view, and enjoy.

Spread over 70 acres of land, Shilpgram translates to ‘village of artisans’ and it is designed exactly like that – it feels as though one is walking through rural markets.

There are small huts built using mud and natural building material to give the real picture of the ethnic diversity of the western states of India. Shilpgram also has a huge open-air amphitheater with a seating capacity of 8000 people at a time.

There are many shops selling souvenirs that include paintings, ceramics, wooden handicrafts, clothes, etc.

  • Sajjangarh Biological Park

Located at the foothills of Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace, the zoo is a big attraction for tourists of all ages. The zoo features over 20 endemic species of animals such as the Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, elephants, and others.

The zoo does not have typical enclosures but a huge space for animals to roam around. This makes for a surreal experience for the tourists. This park offers golf carts with drivers for those who can’t walk across the park.

2 days Udaipur itinerary

Sajjangarh Fort a.k.a Monsoon Palace : Best places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days

We can only imagine the royal and luxurious lives of Maharajas in the yesteryears. A palace was built simply to enjoy the Indian monsoons overlooking Udaipur city and the Aravalli hills. I can say one of the most beautiful places to visit in Udaipur in 2 days, especially during the monsoon.

Sajjangarh fort also known as the monsoon palace is located on the top of a hill and offers beautiful views of Udaipur from above. Built in the 19th century, the fort has a small exhibition on the top floor and viewing galleries all over the complex. One of the most striking features of the fort is the presence of a rainwater harvesting system which is functional even now.

You can get an organized tour package from the Udaipur city area from any tour agency or you can rent an auto rickshaw or taxi. Also, bikes will also go up there. It’s open from 8 am to 6 pm.

There is no dearth of places to eat in Udaipur. The question is whether you are looking for delicious food or amazing views or both. There are many rooftop restaurants around Pichola lake that offer splendid views of the lake.

Here are some of the cafes and restaurants in Udaipur that have great food and views! Beware that most of these are high-end luxurious cafes.

Upre Restaurant

Upre is one of the most popular rooftop restaurants in Udaipur offering panoramic views of Gangaur Ghat and Bagore ki Haveli.  Upre means “upstairs”. The restaurant has a vast selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes and cuisines that range from Indian, Continental, and Chinese cuisines, to Rajasthani dishes. This restaurant looks even more beautiful at night from the Gangaur ghat.

Thanks to its popularity, getting a table here is difficult which is why reservations are strongly recommended. However they do not book a table over weekends – it is first come, first serve.

Address: Hotel Lake Pichola, Outside ChandPole.

The breakfast at Jheel Cafe is a steal because of the good weather, great views, no crowds, and the perfect breakfast spread! The cafe has indoor and outdoor seating and is spread over two floors. Weekends are extremely busy, so a reservation is recommended.

Jagat Niwas Restaurant

Housed in Jagat Niwas Haveli, Pichola lake views from their jharokhas are Instagram-worthy! Try to reach early and bag a table near the window and enjoy the views throughout the delicious meal. The delicacies range from Indian, Continental to Chinese.

Street food places in Udaipur

Paliwal restaurant.

Where to stay In Udaipur

It is always a debate whether to stay in the city near all the happening places or stay on the outskirts by choosing a resort or boutique hotel which gives the best of both worlds. Whichever you choose, there is no dearth of hostels, luxury hotels, guesthouses, airBnBs, and resorts in Udaipur.

Hostels in Udaipur

Hostel mantra.

Located in Udaipur’s Old City, this hostel is within walking distance of happening places and restaurants. There is an option to choose from dorm rooms and private rooms.

Zostel Udaipur

Due to its chain of hostels across India, Zostel Udaipur is a preferable and safe choice for solo travelers, especially women. Not only is it budget friendly but it is located at a great location overlooking Pichola lake. It is decorated beautifully and has a common dining area where travelers can meet up with fellow mates.

Mid-Range Hotels

Trident Udaipur

Located very close to the city center, Trident has the perfect location for escaping the main city crowds, but still being close enough to catch a taxi ride in. Being a chain of hotels, even this is a trusted hotel that offers gorgeous views and has a swimming pool and a restaurant.

Kankarwa Haveli

It is one of many heritage hotels in Udaipur, that belonged to the Kankarwa family. It was renovated to welcome guests giving them the experience of staying in an original Rajasthani Haveli. The location is great as it is close to City Palace and there is a rooftop restaurant to enjoy the Pichola lake views.

Luxury Hotels

Jagmandir island palace udaipur.

If you wish to splurge, then one option is to spend the night at the Jagmandir Island Palace. It is a grand Heritage Palace built in the 17th century. Although popular for weddings, there are rooms available to stay.

There is a Darikhana Restaurant, Picholi Bar, Panghat Spa and Salon, and all-day café where visitors can leisurely spend hours gazing across Lake Pichola and the City Palace. There is also Jagriti, a heritage museum on site to give a feel for how Jagmandir Island Palace was built and developed over the centuries.

How to reach Udaipur

Flights: You can get flights to Udaipur from all major airports, such as Mumbai and Delhi. From the airport, you can get an Uber to your hotel in Udaipur. Check Skyscanner for the best deals.

Train: You can get a train from all over the country to Udaipur. I recommend traveling in AC Class as it is more comfortable. You can book it via the IRCTC website or reserve it at the station in advance.

Bus: Buses are frequent around India and you can easily book a bus online with the red bus . Also, you will get an SMS once you reserve the seat and you can track your bus which is quite convenient. Buses will be a bit expensive if you prefer AC Sleeper.

Alternatively, you can book Private transfers from Delhi, Jaipur, or Pushkar too.

Best time to visit Udaipur

The best time to visit Udaipur is during the winter season. Although keep in mind that most tourists – local and foreign visit Udaipur then which makes it quite crowded and the hotel prices go up.

Where To Go After Udaipur

Rajasthan has so many beautiful destinations to explore. If you are visiting prime destinations of Rajasthan, I recommend visiting Jodhpur or Jaipur next. I suggest not missing Jaisalmer during your India trip. You can read about all these destinations here:
