Video: Pope Francis in Bahrain on a four-day visit
Gulf bahrain.
Francis meets King Hamad in Sakhir Palace, brings message of dialogue to Muslim world
SAKHIR, Bahrain: Pope Francis arrived in Bahrain on Thursday to start a four-day trip, the second by the pontiff to the Arabian peninsula.
The plane carrying the pope arrived in Sakhir where he is due to meet King Hamad bin Eisa Al Khalifa in the Sakhir Palace.
âThe pope is moving forward with a certain logic to open new paths to the different realities of the Muslim world,â said Bishop Paul Hinder, who has worked in the region for nearly two decades and is the Vaticanâs apostolic vicar for Southern Arabia.
The pontiffâs knee pain was so bad on the way to Bahrain that he was unable to walk around the papal plane greeting accompanying reporters as he usually does. The 85-year-old pope has walked with a cane since he tore a ligament in his knee early this year and he sometimes uses a wheelchair.
The pope brought his message of dialogue with the Muslim world to the kingdom, where the government is hosting an interfaith conference on East-West coexistence.
The 85-year-old pope, who has been using a wheelchair for several months because of strained knee ligaments, said on Thursday he was in âa lot of painââ as he headed to Bahrain, and for the first time greeted journalists travelling with him while seated rather than walking through the aisle.
Francis has long touted dialogue as an instrument of peace and believes a show of interfaith harmony is needed, especially now given Russiaâs war in Ukraine and regional conflicts, such as in Yemen.
On the eve of the trip, Francis asked for prayers so that the trip will promote âthe cause of brotherhood and of peace, of which our times are in extreme and urgent need.ââ
The visit is Francisâ second to a Gulf Arab country, following his 2019 landmark trip to Abu Dhabi, where he signed a document promoting Catholic-Muslim fraternity with a leading Sunni cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Al Tayeb. Al Tayeb is the grand imam of Al Azhar, the seat of Sunni learning in Cairo.
Francis followed that with a 2021 visit to Iraq, where he was received by Grand Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani, one of the worldâs pre-eminent Shiite clerics.
Francis will meet again this week in Bahrain with Al Tayeb, as well as other prominent figures in the interfaith field who are expected to attend the conference, which is similar to one hosted last month by Kazakhstan that Francis and Al Tayeb also attended. Members of the regional Muslim Council of Elders, the spiritual leader of the worldâs Orthodox Christians, Patriarch Bartholomew, a representative from the Russian Orthodox Church and rabbis from the United States are all expected, according to the Bahrain programme.
Mass at stadium
The trip will also allow Francis to minister to Bahrainâs Catholic community, which numbers around 80,000 in a country of around 1.5 million. Most are workers hailing from the Philippines and India, though trip organizers expect pilgrims from Saudi Arabia and other neighbouring countries will attend Francisâ big Mass at the national stadium on Saturday.
Bahrain is home to the Gulfâs first Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart parish, which opened in 1939, as well as its biggest one, Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral. The church, with a capacity of 2,300, opened last year in the desert town of Awali on land gifted to the church by the King. In fact, the king presented Francis with a model of the church when he visited the Vatican in 2014 and extended the first invitation to visit.
Francis will visit both churches during his visit and is likely to thank the king for the tolerance the government has long shown Christians living in the country.

Popeâs visit to Bahrain a âprecious step on path of fraternityâ
By Devin Watkins
Pope Francis returns to the Middle East on 3-6 November for the second time in a few short years for a visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
His 39 th Apostolic Journey abroad brings him to his 58 th country visited as Pope.
At a press conference at the Holy See Press Office on Friday, Matteo Bruni offered reporters an overview of the papal visit.
The Director of the Holy See Press Office pointed out that Pope Francis will be the first Pope to visit Bahrain.
Step along path of interfaith encounter
He said the papal visit will focus on the twin themes of âencounterâ and "encouragement" for Catholics in the region.
Pope Francis will attend the closing ceremony of the first-ever âBahrain Forum for Dialogue: East and West for Human Coexistenceâ, which will see around 200 interfaith leaders gathered to promote fraternity.
As the Pope encounters religious leaders, his historic signing of the Document on Human Fraternity in 2019 in Abu Dhabi will form the background for continuing to improve interfaith relations.
âThe visit represents a precious step along the path of fraternity and interreligious dialogue,â said Mr. Bruni.
Mr. Bruno noted that warâboth in Europe and in various countriesâwill form another backdrop to the Popeâs encounter with religious leaders.
The goal, he added, is to continue the search for allies in a common desire for peace in our world.
Pope Francis, noted Mr. Bruni, was invited to attend the Bahrain Forum and visit the Middle Eastern country by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Encouragement for Catholics in the region
Yet, the papal visit is not merely focused on interreligious dialogue.
As the shepherd of the Universal Church, Pope Francis travels to Bahrain to meet with the Catholic community, a majority of whom are foreign-born.
Of the roughly 80,000 Catholic faithful, around 1,000 Catholics are Bahraini citizens, making it one of the few Gulf states to have a local Christian population.
Most Catholics are expatriate workers hailing from India, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka, as well as Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan.
Of the Popeâs seven public encounters on the 4-day visit, four are meetings with various sanctions of the local Catholic Church, including young people, clergy and religious, and Catholics from neighboring countries.
As Pope Francis visits Bahrain next week, local Catholics and leaders of other religions await his words of hope and encouragement on the path to peace in our world currently marred by conflict.

Pope to urge Christian-Muslim dialogue in first papal visit to Bahrain
- Copy Link URL Copied!
Pope Francis on Thursday brought his message of dialogue with the Muslim world to the kingdom of Bahrain, where the Sunni-led government is hosting an interfaith conference on East-West coexistence even as it stands accused of discriminating against the countryâs Shiite majority.
Human rights groups and relatives of Shiite activists on death row have urged Francis to use his visit, which begins Thursday, to call for an end to the death penalty and political repression in Bahrain. But itâs not clear if Francis will publicly embarrass his hosts during his four-day visit, the first of any pontiff to the island nation in the Persian Gulf.
The 85-year-old pope, who has been using a wheelchair for several months because of strained knee ligaments, said Thursday that he was in âa lot of painâ as he headed to Bahrain, and for the first time remained seated to greet journalists traveling with him rather than walk down the planeâs aisle.
He arrived at the desert Awali air base to little fanfare and went immediately into a private meeting with Bahrainâs King Hamad bin Isa Khalifa at the airport before the official welcome ceremony.
Francis has long touted dialogue as an instrument of peace and believes a show of interfaith harmony is needed, especially now given Russiaâs war in Ukraine and regional conflicts, such as in Yemen. On the eve of the trip, Francis asked for prayers for the trip to promote âthe cause of brotherhood and of peace, of which our times are in extreme and urgent need.â
The visit is Francisâ second to a Gulf Arab country, following his 2019 landmark trip to Abu Dhabi, where he signed a document promoting Roman Catholic and Muslim fraternity with a leading Sunni cleric, Sheikh Ahmed Tayeb. Tayeb is the grand imam of Al-Azhar, the seat of Sunni learning in Cairo. Francis followed that with a 2021 visit to Iraq , where he was received by Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, one of the worldâs preeminent Shiite clerics.
Francis will meet again this week in Bahrain with Tayeb, as well as other prominent figures in the interfaith field who are expected to attend the conference, which is similar to one hosted last month by Kazakhstan that Francis and Tayeb also attended. Members of the regional Muslim Council of Elders; the spiritual leader of the worldâs Orthodox Christians, Patriarch Bartholomew; a representative from the Russian Orthodox Church ; and rabbis from the United States are all expected, according to the Bahrain program.

Pope Francis says he would not live at the Vatican or in Argentina if he retires
Francis denied he was planning to retire anytime soon but repeated that âthe door is openâ after Pope Benedict XVI took that historic step in 2013.

The trip will also allow Francis to minister to Bahrainâs Catholic community, which numbers around 80,000 in a country of around 1.5 million. Most are workers from the Philippines and India, though trip organizers expect pilgrims from Saudi Arabia and other neighboring countries will attend Francisâ big Mass at the national stadium Saturday.
Bahrain is home to the Gulfâs first Catholic Church, the Sacred Heart parish, which opened in 1939, as well as its biggest one, Our Lady of Arabia Cathedral. The king presented Francis with a model of the church when he visited the Vatican in 2014 and extended the first invitation to visit.
Francis will visit both churches during his visit and is likely to thank the king for the tolerance the government has long shown Christians living in the country, particularly when compared with neighboring Saudi Arabia, where Christians cannot openly practice their faith.
âReligious liberty inside Bahrain is perhaps the best in the Arab world,â said Bishop Paul Hinder, the apostolic administrator for Bahrain and other Gulf Arab countries. âEven if everything isnât ideal, there can be conversions [to Christianity], which arenât at least officially punished like in other countries.â
Pope weighed coronavirus risks of Iraq trip but believed God would protect the faithful
Pope Francis says he weighed the coronavirus risks of his visit to Iraq and decided to go ahead out of a belief in Godâs protection for the faithful.
March 8, 2021
But in the run-up to his visit to Bahrain, Shiite opposition groups and human rights organizations have urged Francis to focus attention on human rights violations against the majority Shiites by the Sunni monarchy. They urged him to call for an end to the death penalty and request a visit to the countryâs Jau prison, where hundreds of Shiite activists have been jailed.
Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have repeatedly denounced the use of torture in prisons, as well as forced confessions and âsham trialsâ of dissidents.
âWe are writing to appeal to you as the families of twelve death row inmates who are facing imminent execution in Bahrain,â read a letter from the families to Francis released this week by the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy. âOur family members remain behind bars and at risk of execution despite the clear injustice of their convictions.â
Francis has changed church teaching to declare the death penalty inadmissible in all cases. He has regularly visited prisoners during his foreign trips, though no such prison visit is planned in Bahrain.
The Vatican spokesman declined to say whether Francis would raise Bahrainâs human rights record publicly or privately during his visit.
