What's the proper way to greet a stranger in Italy?

SALVE or Buongiorno/Buona Sera. How about someone you know? Ciao.

Nonverbal communication - examples of handy hand gestures and what they mean?

Finger purse: Italians use it as a general exclamation of annoyance, confusion and can mean Ma che vuoi? ("But what do you want?"), Ma che fai? ("But what are you doing?"), Ma che dici? ("But what are you saying?") and express questions in general (i.e. "where", "who", "why"). You can perform it by pressing the thumb against the other fingers and holding the hand upwards.

Perfetto gesture: You can do it by putting your index finger and thumb together and drawing an imaginary line in the air, as if you are pulling a zipper closed (horizontally) . Italians use this to show that something is perfect or delicious.

Chin flick: It means "I don't care" or "I don't give a damn". You can do this by flicking the fingers out from under the chin.

"Buono" (yummy) gesture: Italians use the "buono" gesture to say that a meal is delicious. You do the "buono" gesture by poking your index finger into your cheek.

"Come on" gesture: putting your hands together (like in prayer) and moving them up and down.

Having Dinner At Someone's House

What is the proper etiquette if you're invited to someone's house for dinner? Should you bring a gift for the host? No gift. Its customary to bring Dessert or wine/prosecco.

Do Italians customarily take off their shoes when entering someone's home like some other cultures do? It's a personal preference. Some Italians find it rude to take off one's shoes in front of others. Some (not many) expect you to take them off.

What are some other etiquette basics that Westerners should take note of? Usually Italians don't call friends/family between 2pm and 4pm, since this is when many people have a "pisolino" (nap). If they must call during these hours, they will first apologize for disturbing the household at this time.

Restaurants, Bars, And Cafés

Explain the different types of eateries in Italy and the proper seating protocol for each. For example, do you have to wait for someone to seat you at cafes, or just restaurants or bistros?

Ristorante (restaurant) or pizzeria/trattoria you wait for the host to seat you.

At a cafe/bar you can seat yourself.

Are you supposed to tip Italian servers? If so, what percent? Does it differ based on where you go? You are not expected to tip restaurants in Italy but it is appreciated. Keep in mind that there is sometimes a charge called a coperto. This coperto should be clearly stated somewhere on the menu and may range from 1-3 euro per person. A coperto is not a tip, it is a cover charge to offset the price of bread, oil, salt, and anything else you might be using. Servizio: Another charge that you may be charged is called the servizio. This should also be clearly stated on the menu and should be used for groups of 8 or more. The servizio IS a tip, so there is no need to leave anything more if you have been charged this fee. You can tip as much or as little as you like, but the tip is not anywhere near the 20% that has become standard in the US. A good rule of thumb in a restaurant is about 3 euro per person. Or you can round up the bill.

If you are sitting down or standing for coffee, you can leave 1 euro, which is more than enough.

Are reservations recommended for dinner? Yes reservations are recommended! (Especially in major cities).

Do restaurants have dress codes? Unless it is a fancy restaurant that enforces a dress code, one can wear slacks with a nice shirt or blouse. Jeans are also fine unless it is a fancy restaurant.

How many courses are in a typical Italian meal? A typical Italian meal consists of a first course "il primo" (pasta or soup), a second-course "il secondo" (meat or fish) served together with a side dish "il contorno" (vegetable or salad), dessert and coffee. No pasta dish is complete without the act of "fare la scarpetta", which literally means make a little shoe, and mop up the leftover sauce on your plate. Its a widely used ritual in Italy. This is why bread is usually left on tables in restaurants. Butter and oil is not served with bread in Italy.

Any other table manners we should be aware of?

DON'T cut your pasta with a knife.

DO fill up your neighbor's glass, before your own.

DON'T ask for salad dressing—oil and vinegar are all you need.

How to order coffee like a local? - Cappuccino is considered a breakfast coffee and is never drunk later than mid-morning. The classic Italian caffe` is an espresso - though the term espresso is hardly ever used in Italy. it's simply called a caffe`. The word latte` means milk, so if you order a "latte" at an Italian bar, you'll get a glass of cold milk. As for a caffe` con latte if you want the Italian version.

If you stop at a cafe for a quick coffee, do it like a local - first pay at the cash register, then take your receipt to the barista and give him/her your order.

There are tons of water fountains in Italy. Is there any certain water fountain etiquette? Italian fountains contain some of the freshest water in the country. Rather than buy multiple water bottles, do as the locals do and bring your own disposable bottle and refill it from these fountains. If you don't have a water bottle handy, (on most fountains) you can plug the side spigot with your thumb and the water will come out of a top spigot so you can drink.

Other Social Protocols

Punctuality is not a priority for Italians. It is acceptable to arrive 15 to 30 minutes after the designated time.

Italians don't wait in line. Unlike Americans, Italians don't really believe in standing in lines. The unspoken rule is whoever is the most aggressive and gets to the front first, goes first. Lines are simply not respected.

How to Dress Like An Italian. Dress for the occasion and make sure you present yourself neatly. Italians take a lot of pride in their appearance and usually dress nicely for any kind of public outing. Even when going shopping, Italians dress nicely.

Dress codes to follow at certain places, like churches ? Shoulders and knees must be covered.

What does " bella figura " mean? To make a good impression.

Italian Concepts Explained

Describe the Italian concept of campanilismo . The best way to describe is it a strong sense of pride for one's local area. Sometimes people will even define themselves right down to the particular quarter of the city they live in. Italians are more proud of being "Romano" (from Rome) or Toscano (from Tuscany) than being Italian.

Do Italians really take " la passeggiata " after dinner? (passeggiata = stroll) Yes. Passeggiata is a daily ritual that Italians really enjoy – just taking some time later in the day to stroll through the streets, chat with friends or do some window shopping.

Why are stores closed on Sundays? Before 2012, stores except supermarkets, were always closed on Sundays in order to give workers time to spend with their family and go to church. After 2012, this changed and now you will find more stores open.

Explain the concept of " pisolino ". Pisolino refers to a nap that Italians take after their mid-day meal each day, also known as siesta.

Regional Variations

Lumping all Italians together is like lumping all Americans together. Yes, we are one country, but customs and manners in the south are different than those in the north. How do northern and southern Italy differ in terms of social protocol? There is a stereotype that Northern Italians tend to be more hardworking and business-oriented, but can also be a little snobbish. Southern Italians are thought to be more laid back and sometimes considered borderline lazy. Those from Southern Italy are usually much warmer and friendlier than those from the North.

What should travelers do to avoid being pickpocketed in busy touristy areas? If you don't need it, don't bring it with you - especially not your passport. Always keep your hand on your bag that's hanging on your shoulder or keep your bag in front of you. Don't keep our wallet in your back pocket. Use a cheap luggage lock that you can use to lock your zippers on your backpack or purse in busy areas. At restaurants and cafés, leave your purse in your lap instead of hanging it off of your chair and don't leave your phone on the table if dining outside.

Be sure to make 2 copies of your passport before traveling - leave one copy at home and one in your wallet with you in case of an emergency.

General do's and don'ts?

Don't expect ice in your drinks! Italians do not drink ice cold drinks and normally do not put more than 1 cube in a drink unless you ask for it.

Don't put any cheese on pasta with seafood.

Don't ask for a doggie bag at a restaurant.

This exciting tour highlights two of our favorite places in Italy: Rome and Tuscany. See all of the sites of the Eternal City and Florence and then venture out into the Tuscan countryside.

Boarding your overnight flight, you’re off to Italy on the adventure of a lifetime!

Benvenuti a Roma! We are pleased to offer complimentary transfers from the Rome airport to your hotel at scheduled times. Your Perillo representative will be at the airport to greet you.

Enjoy some free time this afternoon—take a walk on Via Veneto, have a gelato or maybe do some shopping. Tonight, we’ll meet our tour leader for a brief orientation and welcome drink, followed by dinner in our hotel.

This morning, it’s a ten-minute bus ride over to another country—Vatican City. With our expert local guide we’ll tour the Vatican Museums—a massive collection of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings.

Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, renowned for its Renaissance art, especially the ceiling which was painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512. This room, which attracts more than five million visitors each year, is also where the Pope is elected.

Next we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pietà, sculpted when he was just 24 years old, as well as Bernini’s seven story bronze canopy located above the main altar.

Afterwards, we explore some of the oldest areas of Rome – the Jewish Ghetto and Trastevere.

There’s been a Jewish community in Rome since the second-century BC. It was Pope Paul IV who ordered them into a walled-off section of town in 1555. But In 1870, the Papal States lost control of the area and the Jews were free to leave the Ghetto!

All this walking will make us hungry... Si mangia! You’ll get a taste of real Italian cuisine and fine wines in a family-style restaurant in the characteristic district of Trastevere. This lively area is just what one imagines Italy to be like, with tiny cobblestone streets and music-filled trattorias on every corner.

(Please note that the visit of St. Peter’s Basilica is subject to availability based on any events planned by the Pope.)

Hail Caesar! All aboard our chariot for a relaxing, panoramic driving tour of Imperial Rome including the Roman Forum, downtown ancient Rome, the Circus Maximus, and the Great Synagogue, built in the heart of the Jewish quarter.

Then we’ll enter the Colosseum, reliving the brutal entertainment of the gladiators and the lions, refereed by the Emperor himself.

Tonight, we thought you’d enjoy a dinner on your own. Ask your tour leader for a recommendation, or venture out and explore the lively restaurants of Rome! Be sure to try Pasta cacio e pepe—pasta in a creamy olive oil, pecorino cheese and black pepper sauce—a specialty of Rome. Don’t forget the gelato after dinner! You’re doing a lot of walking on this tour so it’s a well-deserved treat!

Florence—the fountainhead of the Renaissance awaits our inspection! Our day of sightseeing includes the majestic Duomo built in 1926, Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery with its renowned Gates of Paradise doors.

We follow the medieval streets to the most striking square in Florence, Basilica di Santa Croce, where Michelangelo is buried.

“Breathtaking” is the only word to describe one’s first view of Michelangelo’s David. Yes, it’s quite large and detailed. But the real magic is in how Michelangelo transformed lifeless rock into a man—full of pride, wary of his adversary, yet quietly confident. All with just a hammer and chisel!

Next we enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch. The evening is yours to do as you please!

After breakfast (colazione), we drive to Lucca, also known as “the city of 100 churches”. The churches are protected against Medieval invasions with huge, fortified walls. We visit the famous Duomo, the Amphitheater and the impressive Church of San Frediano.

This afternoon we visit Pisa! The Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles) is recognized as one of the main centers for medieval art in the world, with four great religious edifices: the Cathedral, the Campanile (the famous leaning Tower), the Baptistery and the Camposanto.

We’ll enter the Cathedral dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption. The big candelabrum near the altar is where Galileo Galilei tested his laws of pendulum physics!

Next we enter the marble Baptistery, the largest in all of Italy. Dedicated to St. John the Baptist, the building took 211 years to construct. The acoustics are amazing...you can whisper to a person 30-feet away and they’ll hear you clearly.

Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own at a local Florentine restaurant. Be sure to try Ribollita, one of Florence’s most delicious specialties. This hearty soup is made from cannelloni beans, vegetables, red cabbage and chunks of bread (pane).

Today we travel back in time to medieval Siena – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We visit the famous Piazza del Campo, one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares and the site of the famous Palio horse race.

We’ll visit Siena’s town hall, Palazzo Pubblico, and the enchanting Duomo (cathedral) featuring the most ornate mosaic tile floor in all of Italy.

Next, we drive through the beautiful rolling hills of Chianti, for a most unique winery visit. You’ll get to meet our dear friend, Pierluigi Giachi, the world’s most enchanting and entertaining sommelier. Enjoy an oil and wine tasting and early dinner at the Tenuta Torciano. Salute!

This morning you board your flight home arriving in the USA the same day. Grazie mille for traveling with the Perillo family!

Credibility Check

On the USTOA (U.S. Tour Operators Association) and Travelstride site, Perillo gets 4.8 out of 5 . Perillo is not BBB accredited but earns an A+ rating from the organization.

Tour Destinations

Perillo is best known as an Italy specialist, with tours that range from nine to 15 days all across Italy. The company also offers a limited number of itineraries to Greece and Spain. And for 30 years, Perillo has also been hosting guided tours to Hawaii.

Perillo’s group Italy tours focus on either a geographical region or a theme. So for instance, you could opt for a tour that focuses exclusively on Rome and the Amalfi Coast, or Sicily and Italy’s South; or you could choose a themed tour like Renaissance and let the topic take you to cities (like Florence) that were important during the period. Some tours are more food-focused (for instance, Green Heart of Italy) but all Perillo tours are focused on good food experiences.

COMFORT AND STYLE: How to Choose the Best Walking Shoes for Travel

Perillo’s Greece tour itineraries are more limited in number, but most offer a mix of land and sea excursions. The company currently offers just one Spain tour, a 13-day trip that covers much of the country. Perillo’s Hawaii tours focus on multi-island excursions that give travelers an easy way to experience the different islands of Hawaii on one itinerary. Hawaii tours range from about nine to 13 days.

Tour Guides

Perillo uses both tour directors and local guides, and both must pass a rigorous series of written and oral exams before becoming Perillo tour guides. According to Perillo: “This is a very difficult process, with approximately only one in 10 applicants passing the examinations.” And All Perillo guides are trained in the “Perillo style of ‘over-the-top’ guest service.”

Excursions/Extras

Perillo tour prices include hotels, sightseeing with expert guides, transfers, baggage handling, daily breakfast, select scheduled meals, tips, taxes, and complimentary WiFi on all Perillo coach buses. While Perillo does offer competitive airfare, it’s not included in the base price of the tour.

READY FOR ADVENTURES: Best Tour Companies for Older Travelers

There are often additional optional activities offered at (a fair and modest) extra cost during tour free time. Examples of such extras include a gondola serenade in Venice, the Illuminated Rome at Night experience, a Lake Como boat cruise, and a visit to Villa D’Este in Tivoli.

Typical Travelers

The majority of Perillo Tours’ guests fall in the 59-77 age range, and most are from the United States. Perillo Tours are popular with couples, but about 13% of tour travelers are solo travelers.

SOLO BUT NOT ALONE: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

dates

Upon arrival in Milano MXP Airport, you will travel to Cinque Terre. You will be met by your driver and a tour escort and will be transferred to your hotel in Liguria region (Approximate 3 hours by motorcoach), in northwest Italy. This crescent shaped regions Mediterranean coastline is known as the Italian Riviera. The 5 colorful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, as well as stylish Portofino, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure, are on the eastern coast or Riviera di Levante. Once in Clinque Terre you will experience a welcome dinner (hotel or restaurant walking distance), and have the rest of your evening at your leisure.

Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore are five small villages surrounded by a unique landscape that UNESCO has named a World Heritage site. These villages contain gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear water, steep trails winding through lush vineyards and olive groves, lemon trees and pine woods. A perfect spot, whether you enjoy swimming, boating, walking through the historic town, or exploring the pristine nature all around you. After breakfast, depart for Cinque Terre and enjoy an unforgettable day dedicated to the discovery of one of the most amazing and enchanting landscape in the World. You will travel though the little villages via boat (weather permitting) and train. The five villages, “Cinque Terre” is an area suspended between sea and land, hanging from sheer cliffs surrounded by hills and vineyards. You will enter a little piece of heaven. This spectacular coastline was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and it is one of the best preserved natural and semi-natural parts of the Mediterranean.

As one of the most popular things to do while in the Italian Riviera, prepare to learn how to make pesto! Discover all the essential products, the Italian origins, and the story of the habitants that create the famous Ligurian sauce. During the pesto-making class discover all the secrets of the authentic recipe by using the original ingredients, a marble mortar & pestle, and your own hands to curate the specialty. At the end, compare the pesto that you made with an industrial one! To enhance the experience you'll also be preparing either fresh pasta or fresh gnocchi in the authentic handmade way. During the cooking lesson will be served a selection of Ligurian wines, including the infamous sweet wine, Sciacchetrà, a typical wine of “5 terre”. This class lasts approximately 2-3 hours, and afterwards you can eat the food of which you prepared during the lesson.

After breakfast at your hotel, take a walking tour of Santa Margherita Ligure, then depart for a short boat ride to Portofino, a picturesque seaside village with brightly colored houses lining the shore. Portofino is also known as the resort of the rich and famous. Designer boutiques and dozens of cafes and restaurants line the main square, giving guests the chance to experience the real Italian “bella vita”. You will have free time to visit the main square and the church of San Giorgio, which is said to have relics of St. George. You can also visit the Brown Castle which was built in the 15th century and used for harbor defense over the centuries. You will have some free time to sight see, have some gelato, or just sit and people watch. Later on in the afternoon, make your way by boat back to Rapallo where you have the evening at your leisure to either explore or relax.

After breakfast, prepare to depart the Liguria region and make your way towards Lake Como. Once you reach Como, enjoy some free time to explore and settle into the area. The city offers many historical and cultural gems, which you can easily discover by taking a walk in the pedestrian historical center. Don't miss a chance to observe the Como Cathedral, the Basilica of St Abbondio, and the city's medieval town hall (Broletto).

Enjoy breakfast followed by a full-day excursion. Meet your step-on guide and start discovering Lake Como from the waters, then stop to enjoy the wonderful villages of Bellagio and Tremezzo. Trough this boat trip, you can admire the villages, the Mediaeval hamlets, the Romanesque churches, the views of the flora and of course, a long series of villas with their luxuriant gardens. In Tremezzo, stop to admire Villa Carlotta with its magnificent botanic garden and art masterpieces. There is over 70.000 square meters of gardens and museum! The beautiful villa, built at the end of XVII century in a natural basin between the lake and the mountains, faces the dolomite Grignas and the peninsula of Bellagio, at The Pearl of Lake Como. Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts are as beautiful as Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio's world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panorama. The village is characterized by century-old buildings, stone lanes, and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares. Later on, upon returning to Como, enjoy a farewell dinner on your final evening in Italy.

Arrivederci! After breakfast, you will be taken via private transfer to the Milan airport for your return flight to the USA.

Grazie! (Thank you) for choosing and traveling with Perillo Tours!
