Concert Review: Rob Zombie with Alice Cooper in Toronto

September 6th 2023 Budweiser Stage, Toronto, Ontario

To be honest, I'm here to see Alice Cooper but throw in Rob Zombie as the headliner and trust me, I'm not complaining!

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Openers Filter were good. I didn't know much about the band but I will give them more of a listen now that I've seen them live.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Next up were industrial metal band Ministry .  The band was amazing and I really enjoyed them covering the Black Sabbath song ' Supernaut '. Although I was here for Alice, I will now give this band some listening as they sounded great. Ministry Set List

01 - Thieves 02 - The Missing   03 - Deity 04 - Stigmata     05 - Supernaut (Black Sabbath cover) 06 - Burning Inside       07 - N.W.O         08 - Just One Fix     07 - Goddamn White Trash

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Next up was Alice Cooper who just released his album ' Road '. School may have just started again but with Alice Cooper, it's " school's out forever !" Teacher Alice never dissapoints and seeing him is a lesson in music.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Starting off with ' Lock Me Up ' and ' No More Mr. Nice Guy ,' he got us old farts (yes, I'm guessing the majority of us there are in our 50s and 60s) out of are seats clapping and cheering. C'mon people its Alice fucking Cooper !!

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

He played 'I'm Eighteen ' next and had me singing it. Followed next by ' Under My Wheels ' and 'Billion Dollar Babies; ' the classics just kept coming. ' Hey Stoopid ' and ' Snakebite ' were awesome. ' Feed My Frankenstein ' and ' Poison ' came next and yes, he did bring the snake out on stage!

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

At this time, Nita Strauss nailed an amazing guitar solo. Alice finished the night off with ' Elected ' and ' School's Out.' Although I was a little surprised nothing from the new album was played, it's not really surprising considering his catalogue of music.

Who knows maybe he'll come back to Toronto soon as a headliner and play some of them. At 75 years of age, Alice still puts on one hell of a rock show!

Alice Cooper Set List

01 - Lock Me Up 02 - No More Mr. Nice Guy   03 - I'm Eighteen 04 - Under My Wheels     05 - Billion Dollar Babies 06 - Hey Stoopid       07 - Lost In America         08 - Snakebite     09 - Feed My Frankenstein 10 - Poison 11 - "The Black Widow" (segment from Alice Cooper: The Nightmare) 12 - Nita Strauss Guitar Solo   13 - Black Widow Jam 14 - Ballad of Dwight Fry       15 - Killer (partial; band only)       16 - I Love The Dead (partial; band only) 17 - Elected 18 - School's Out

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Finally it was Rob Zombie . As the curtain dropped and the 15,000 plus fans rose from their seats, it was pure zombie madness. Like I said, I was here for Alice but don't get me wrong, Rob puts on one hell of a show. To be honest, I only knew the last four songs of his set but heck that's the fun of being a rock and metal fan. I loved the songs he was singing even though I didn't know the lyrics and I loved the vibe that he was giving off. Now that being said I now need to go listen to some of his other songs.

Rob Zombie Set List

01 - The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Supersition) 02 - Dead City Radio and The New Gods of Supertown 03 - Feel So Numb 04 - Well, Everybody's Fucking in a U.F.O   05 - What Lurks on Channel X? 06 - Superbeast       07 - Demonoid Phenomenon     08 - The Lords of Salem     09 - House of 1000 Corpses 10 - Drum Solo 11 - Living Dead Girl 12 - More Human Than Human (White Zombie) 13 - Thunder Kiss '65 (White Zombie) 14 - Dragula

Rob Zombie kicked off his traveling horror fest to Texas alongside the legendary Alice Cooper. Ministry and Filter were strong openers on the tour that will travel the country.

Some lineups, like this one, just fit perfectly.

When Zombie was just 5 years old, Cooper released "I'm 18" off the band's third album, the menacingly-titled Love It To Death .

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

On that 1971 tour, a 23 year-old Cooper would appear in a straightjacket and later get zapped in an electric chair, which was, uh, shocking to audiences who'd never seen quite a spectacle like that just a few years removed from The Summer of Love.

Fast forward to the 21st century where Rob Zombie has made a career of living up to his name by following in the industrial-heavy footsteps of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails who followed in the footsteps of Ministry.

Filter, being led by a former Nine Inch Nail slides right into that line up comfortably.

The granddaddy of them all, Alice, releases his 29th studio album today, Road , which is heavy, scary, and does not sound one bit like it's coming from a man who is 75 years old.

His collaboration with Rage Against The Machine's guitar hero Tom Morello might have some silly lines and imagery but who cares: listen to those thick riffs.

The action kicked off at the Dos Equis Pavillion in Dallas Thursday August 24 and if the set Alice brought to opening night is indicative of what the tour is going to be like, fans shouldn't miss a thing.

Starting off with "Lock Me Up," Cooper arrives in a top hat, cane, and familiar makeup and sets the stage with the track from 1987's Raise Your Fist And Yell .

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

What follows next are a slew of hits from the '70s during a time when Alice was not just selling millions of records but paving the way for hard rock, metal, and horror rock bands to come.

Rob Zombie gave the audience what Beavis and Butthead thought was pretty cool.

Last month when Zombie was in Minnesota, told the story that before the two teenage cartoon characters praised the band on an episode, they were only selling 500 copies a week. But after Beavis said "Yes! Yes!" to "Welcome to Planet MF," they were selling tens of thousands a week and playing arenas instead of clubs

Then they rocked out to "Thunder Kiss '65" as a giant demon stalked the stage.

Decades later Zombie is a filmmaker directing scary movies, a shriek-maker via designing Halloween horror nights at amusement parks like Universal Studios, and now the ringleader of this traveling hard rock festival.

Montreal Rocks Facebook

Rob Zombie + Alice Cooper + guests @ Toronto Budweiser Stage

Last-minute concert road trips are always a blast. Especially when it involves getting to see four amazing bands. The Freaks on Parade co-headlining tour featured two legendary shock rockers, Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie. To complete this awesome lineup, Ministry and Filter were added to the bill to warm up the diverse, all age crowd. The Budweiser stage is a nice venue on its own little island, that Montreal should have brought their version of it to Ile St-Helene. Instead, we have a giant slab of concrete that doesn’t help the sound or heat whatsoever with no shade and noise complaints. At least at this venue we were mostly protected from the surprise storm that passed by. Luckily, it was brief and cooled things down a bit.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

First to hit the Stage was Filter . Singer Richard Patrick appeared from the excessive amount of smoke billowing from the front of the stage. After a long touring hiatus, they were back to promote a new album, The Algorithm . Released only two weeks prior, you could tell they were working out the kinks of the live performance. After twenty years and a stint in rehab, Patrick needed the lyrics printed to follow along.

They still had that spark, and Patrick’s voice was just as sharp as ever. I was super excited to see them. They were that earworm band that 99.9 the Buzz radio station would play every hour. Take a Picture, Welcome to the Fold, and Hey Man Nice Shot were the band’s most popular songs performed back to back. Patrick taunted the audience a little, exclaiming “Hey man, now you guys finally recognized who the fuck Filter is, all from that one song, Take a Picture.” It also dawned on me that I had seen his brother tell stories about him live at Comiccon just over a year ago. Robert Patrick is an actor famous for his roles in Terminator and special agent Doggett in the X-Files. Pretty cool having heard anecdotes from the older brother not knowing I’d ever see Filter live. It was a short but sweet set but worth travelling to see, and that was only the first band.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

It was time to get heavy with some industrial metal. Ministry were here to wake everyone up out of their seats, starting with one of their big hits, Thieves. Singer Al Jourgensen is the only original member of the band, he has lasted through the heavy rock and roll lifestyle. A true pioneer in the eighties of industrial metal, they haven’t thrown the towel in yet, though there have been talks of the end. With a new album out in 2024, they look as invigorated as ever onstage. At sixty-four years old Jourgensen was making the most of the space.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Musically it was probably a little abrasive for the older folks. But not the guy next tome who asked me who the band was and started headbanging along. It was the first time being in the seats at this venue, there was a lot of reverb where I was sitting.

They kept the pace, playing their massive hits from one album back to back. The Missing, Deity and Stigmata. Then pulled off a nice cover of Black Sabbath’s Supernaut. Finishing off the set with a couple more deep cuts and the Song God Damn White Trash.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

It was finally time for the man of the hour, Alice Cooper . I had only seen him once at Montebello’s Rockest but wasn’t close enough to the stage to properly see all the antics. A larger-than-life newspaper banner was revealed with the words: Banned in Canada Alice Cooper . The band began playing Lock Me Up as Alice appeared from behind said banner. He changed the lyrics, including Canada in it, which was pretty cool.

The fans sang every word of the hit parade of No More Mr Nice Guy, I’m Eighteen and Under My Wheels. At seventy-five years old, Cooper is still rocking it hard. With multiple outfit changes and stage props he was able to do more than most younger acts who barely play an hour set. This tour also saw the return of world-famous female powerhouse guitarist Nita Strauss, completing an already solid lineup. Also joining him was guitarist Tommy Henriksen from Alice’s other musical project Hollywood Vampires, featuring Johnny Depp and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

During the song Snakebite Cooper paraded around the stage with ease with a boa constrictor snake around his neck. I’m not sure if it was his pet this time or not, as he has had troubles in the past getting it over the border. Speaking of animals, there was an incident back 1969 in Toronto that will be forever known as the chicken throw. Being a pioneer of shock rock, Alice was determined to give the audience their money’s worth. Bringing a chicken onstage and letting it go in the audience, thinking it would just fly away. Lets just say said chicken did not survive. I’m sure Peta is not a big fan of his antics to this day.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

One of my favorite songs of Cooper is Poison and he didn’t disappoint; he even extended the chorus. For the song The Battle of Dwight Fry, Cooper appeared under an ominous green spotlight wearing a straight jacket. Leading into an instrumental version of I Love the Dead and Killer, Cooper’s ex-wife appeared onstage with a large guillotine. Proceeding to “chop” Cooper’s head off and parade around with it.

Poking fun at politics and the general circus that comes with it is what the next song Elected was all about. Cooper stood on a podium and made a promise to Canada to fix its problems with the “Wild Party” if he were elected by doing absolutely nothing. Sounds about right.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

This was the first of two final songs. The encore was of course School’s Out with a mash-up medley of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall. He followed it up with a full introduction to his band members as they did some solos. After seventeen songs, they took a bow and left the stage. Fans waited patiently for another encore but that was it. I heard all I wanted to hear and more so I was satisfied.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

Up next another more modern shock rocker and director, Rob Zombie . With another epic stage setup, he came out on his zombie skull podium. The drums were on a riser and the rest of the stage was covered in multiple screens playing old horror movie clips for enhanced visuals. Flamboyantly dressed in glitter bell bottoms and a tasselled jacket, Zombie began with a new song. Then quickly went into fan favourite Feel So Numb. Next up was a funny song called Well Everybody’s Fucking in a U.F.O, with visuals of cows being abducted in the background. The drums were then lowered back down to the stage and the giant demon robots, made famous by their music videos, joined them onstage. There were flames shooting up on either side of Zombie as he played Superbeast and Demonoid Phenomenon.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

He then asked everyone if they truly wanted to party cause he wasn’t happy with the reaction he was getting, even though he had just spoke about how much he loved playing in Toronto. He also made a speech about filming or selfie-taking saying enough is enough. “Take your last selfie and put your phones down; all of you complain about the good old times but yet you can’t put it down for three fucking minutes,” he exclaimed. He got everyone to clap along now that they had their hands free. Apparently, that didn’t apply to the annoying girl in front of me who said – “I can film because I’m not from here.” I hate that this has become the new normal, and it shows how rude people can be. I kept having to look at the screens because she was obstructing my view. Even public shaming wasn’t enough to stop her.

rob zombie alice cooper tour toronto

He then did two songs from his original band White Zombie, More Human Than Human and Thunder Kiss 65. Playing on the screens were clips from Rob Zombie’s movie House of a 1000 Corpses. The best was saved for last, the most known song from the band, Dragula, It was pretty rushed and not well sung, the crowd was singing louder than him. He led the crowd in a final chant of the word Zombie and left the stage.

I’ve been to a handful of shows in Toronto; one observation is the crowds are definitely the opposite of Montreal. For one, they don’t cheer as much; they clap. I noticed all four bands had to almost demand a better reaction. Not to say they weren’t enjoying it; they just weren’t very emotive I guess. That’s why the Montreal crowds will always be the best. It’s too bad this tour didn’t come here. I had heard a lot of Quebecers travelled there for the show. I am so grateful to have witnessed another moment in Canadian rock and roll history.

Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie Bring the Heat at Tour Kickoff: Review and Photos

Alice Cooper 's vindication was short-lived.

The singer born Vincent Damon Furnier survived all sorts of peril on Thursday at Dallas' Dos Equis Pavilion during the opening night of his Freaks on Parade co-headlining tour with Rob Zombie . Cooper handled a formidable boa constrictor with ease, outsmarted a towering Frankenstein and gritted his teeth as a guard electrocuted him. He no sooner broke free of his straitjacket than he was stuffed into a guillotine and decapitated with relish by Marie Antoideath, played by his wife, Sheryl Cooper.

Luckily, Cooper has gotten the act of nightly death and resurrection down to a science after more than half a century at the cutting edge of rock 'n' roll theater — though if he keeps shooting his mouth off about trans kids , maybe a few real-life whacks would serve him well.

Cooper's dynamite 70-minute performance — a truncated version of his Too Close for Comfort  headlining set — neatly blended old favorites ("I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr. Nice Guy") and midcareer deep cuts. The show opened with "Lock Me Up" off 1986's  Raise Your Fist and Yell , and Cooper hit a great mid-set run of early-'90s gems: "Hey Stoopid," "Lost in America" and "Snakebite."

As always, his band rocked to near perfection without ever sounding contrived. Guitarists Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henriksen and Nita Strauss ' triple-lead attack washed over the audience like a tidal wave, and they partnered with bassist Chuck Garric to deliver expert four-part backing vocals.

Thursday's show also confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that Strauss is one of her generation's premier guitar heroes. Fresh off a 2022 stint touring with Demi Lovato , Strauss wooed the audience with a solo spot full of tapping, sweep-picking and whammy bar squeals, and she dashed across the stage with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Her chops and stage presence make her a crucial part of Cooper's live band, and the audience exploded with applause when the shock-rocker introduced her during the show-closing "School's Out."

While Cooper's set was satirical and vaudevillian, Zombie's went for sheer maximalism, a smorgasbord of scorching flames, life-size demon babies and swiveling devil statues. The bell-bottom-clad singer shook his ass and banged his dreadlocks across the stage as the band churned an industrial metal storm fit for a BDSM club in the center of hell.

At times, the combination of droning dirges and horror movie imagery was almost oppressively heavy. But when Zombie struck the perfect blend of raunchiness and grotesquerie, as on "Superbeast" and "Living Dead Girl," it felt dangerous and devilishly fun.

When guitarist Mike Riggs encountered technical difficulties ahead of "Thunder Kiss '65," Zombie stalled by having the audience wave their lit cellphones back and forth. "It almost feels like there's a breeze,” he sneered, "but there's not. There's just hot sweat everywhere."

Zombie's sweltering pyrotechnics were a mere facsimile of the 106-degree heat that plagued opening acts Filter and Ministry . Both rose to the unenviable occasion and warmed up the crowd, figuratively and literally. Richard Patrick's tuneful roar led Filter through muscular renditions of requisite hits "Take a Picture" and "Hey Man Nice Shot," while Ministry's dreadlocked provocateur Al Jourgensen whipped the crowd into a frenzy and coaxed the sun below the horizon with the blistering "Stigmata" and set-closing "Revenge," performed for the first time since 1984.

Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper deliver horror-infused rock in Pittsburgh show

Mike Palm

Every night could be Halloween on the Freaks on Parade tour, co-headlined by Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper.

Zombie, who also writes and directs horror movies besides his musical career, and Cooper, the godfather of shock rock, brought their unique but complementary versions of horror business Tuesday night to the Pavilion at Star Lake for a crowd of around 13,000.

First off, a Rob Zombie concert can create sensory overload. The massive giant video screens offered a variety of pulsating animations, horror movie clips, anime, pictures of cult leaders and much more in a true multimedia experience. And that’s not to mention the pyro, falling sparks and light show. (If strobe lights are an issue, this might be a concert to avoid in the future.)

Visible in silhouette behind a screen, Zombie started the show in an elevated platform emblazoned with his name, and drummer Ginger Fish even higher behind him. The band opened with “Demon Speeding” followed by “Super-Charger Heaven,” the first of several classics from White Zombie, the band he started before going solo.

Zombie used a variety of mic stands, from a goathead with flashing red eyes to a gnarled, six-armed skeleton to a 10-pointed star . Guitarist Mike Riggs and bassist Rob “Blasko” Nicholson had matching Nosferatu mic stands .

An explosive “Feel So Numb” led to the funky yet odd “Well, Everybody’s (expletive) in a U.F.O.,” which saw the first of several oversized puppets, this one a gorilla body with a deep sea diver’s head, not to mention a massive inflatable robot behind the drums. Others that appeared later included a demonic red creature in “The Lords of Salem” and a different demonic creature for “The Triumph of King Freak (A Crypt of Preservation and Superstition).”

Zombie closed strongly with a sizzling “More Human Than Human” from White Zombie, with “Living Dead Girl” next as Zombie did big kicks as giant balloons fell into the crowd.

“Did you outgrow headbanging?” the 59-year-old Zombie asked. “Come on! I’m older than you, and I didn’t outgrow it.”

That led to Riggs dropping the riff from “Thunder Kiss ‘65,” the final White Zombie song, as Zombie donned a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey with No. 65 and Zombie on the nameplate. (Sorry, Erik Karlsson!) He closed with his biggest anthem, “Dragula,” to close the night of supernatural and overcharged metal.

Cooper, meanwhile, seemed positively restrained in comparison to Zombie.

After entering through a newspaper with a “Banned in Pennsylvania” headline for “Lock Me Up,” the 76-year-old hit four straight classic rock standards from the 1970s: “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” “I’m Eighteen,” “Under My Wheels” and “Billion Dollar Babies.”

Cooper’s band vamped and hit the rock star poses, but they also showed their chops. The three guitarists — Ryan Roxie, Tommy Henriksen and Nita Strauss — shredded and traded guitar solos, with Strauss getting a standalone solo that transitioned to “Black Widow Jam.”

Through the night, Cooper used a variety of props, from a cane to a horse riding crop to a crutch to a saber. During “Hey Stoopid,” he stabbed a paparazzi photographer with his mic stand, with a ninja escorting him off stage. Jason Vorhees from the “Friday the 13th” movie series made an appearance during “He’s Back (The Man Behind the Mask)” to stab a fan. A giant Frankenstein’s monster hit the stage on “Feed My Frankenstein.”

Would a Cooper show be complete without a snake appearance? He performed “Snakebite” with a boa wrapped around his shoulders.

The theatrics escalated on “Ballad of Dwight Fry,” which saw Cooper performing in a straitjacket before a mock beheading in a guillotine, with his wife Sheryl playing the role of Marie Antoinette. While still wearing the straitjacket, Cooper moved to “Elected,” with American flags on both sides and red, white and blue streamers launched into the crowd. (Coincidentally, Cooper launched a satirical run for presidency this summer.)

Cooper closed with a celebratory “School’s Out,” which included a snippet of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” and band intros (with bassist Chuck Garric flinging a Terrible Towel into the crowd). As bubbles drifted from both sides of the stage, confetti-filled balloons floated through the crowd, with Cooper seemingly eager to pop them.

Ministry, one of the forefathers of industrial metal, mixed in a pair of new songs (from 2021 and 2024) alongside several of their classics from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Founder Al Jourgensen, who jokingly lamented the changeover music — “James Taylor before a Ministry concert? I don’t know. I’m kind of freaked out” — ditched his facial piercings and trademark dreadlocks earlier this year, opting Tuesday for more of a gunslinger look with a black cowboy hat.

In their 40 minutes, Ministry unleashed a wall of sound, with pummeling drums on “Just One Fix,” the heavy thrash of “Thieves” and “Stigmata,” where the influence they had on Nine Inch Nails seemed palpable. They closed with “Jesus Built My Hotrod,” the band’s first commercial hit.

Also dressed all in black, Filter opened the show with the sun beating down. Leaning on their heavier material during most of their 30-minute set, the industrial rock band softened a bit with their biggest hit, “Take a Picture.”

“Half of you are like, that’s Filter?” said frontman Richard Patrick.

Patrick, who formed the band in Cleveland before moving on to Chicago and now Los Angeles, had kind words for Pittsburgh — a far cry from a 1995 show where he referred to the city as “Pitts-puke.”

To start the grim theme of the night, they closed with “Hey Man, Nice Shot,” which was based on the on-air suicide of Pennsylvania state treasurer R. Budd Dwyer.
