Experiences For All Levels
These treks have shorter walks with less elevation gain and loss. And they also have more time for wine tasting!
These treks have days of 9 to 12 miles with up to 2300 feet of elevation gain and loss. Some are just inn-to-inn hiking and others are in the Wine Country with wine tasting as well!
These treks are similar to our hiker’s treks, but designed with trail runners in mind. Lunch is provided after a morning trail run, rather than packed for a picnic lunch.
Your team’s attention to detail and exceptional planned daily logistics were noted and appreciated. Both accommodations were superior plus, the three hikes fantastic, the wine tours/tastings great, the dinner reservation suggestions wonderful, the guide books, maps, opener, and bottle bag were outstanding.
This was our fourth time visiting Napa, and by far, our best experience. Being able to trek, rather than ride, seeing the beautiful landscapes, gave us a greater appreciation of how integral the land is to the winemaking process.
We had an amazing time on the trip and both thought it was one of the best trips we have ever taken. It was everything we expected it to be and more. Running/hiking the trails was a great experience, the lodging was some of the best and most unique places we have ever stayed at.
Overall the experience was stunning. We were challenged by the hiking and were amazed by the sights along the way. We feel strongly that we would never have the appreciation for this part of our country by any other method of travel. We wouldn’t change a thing–it really was well organized, fun, challenging, exciting. Everything we signed up for!
Where to begin?! We had an absolutely wonderful time! The trip was beautifully organized, with each day offering a different landscape for our hike and a unique and well-chosen hotel for our tired bodies.Thank you! It was magical! The trip of a lifetime!

California Wine Country is a popular destination for cyclists and drivers alike, who’ve had to deal with increasing traffic congestion along the region's main thoroughfares over the years. Backroads strives to find quiet, off-the-beaten track routes, but due to the area's geography and the amount of ground we cover, there are routes on this trip with sections that follow more heavily trafficked roads. We’ll alert you in advance so you can bypass these areas in the shuttle, if you choose

The Most Scenic Drives Through California’s Wine Country
With acres of grassy hills, stunning valleys, and babbling rivers, California’s landscape will never fail to amaze you. Every year this gastronomic and cultural hub for food and wine lures millions of tourists to its doorstep each year. The wine country roads of California are some of the most frequented by road trippers from all around the world. Each scenic route is home to dozens of restaurants, vineyards, and tasting rooms that can be unlike anything you’ve experienced before.
If you haven’t been to this wine country yet, then carpe diem - the time is now! What’s fantastic is that you can visit this region at any time of year because all of the seasons compliment the landscape with varying hues in their own unique way. With so much natural beauty to feast your eyes upon while sipping and swirling gorgeous wines, it’s no surprise that driving through California is the most immersive way to experience it.
Below are some of the best scenic drives to take through California’s wine country. After reading this article, you’re more than welcome to get excited about your future adventures here — this world-famous area is ideal for both the beginner and experienced wine enthusiast!
Napa Valley: Silverado Trail
Looking for quintessential Napa Valley? Then this trail will definitely pique your interest. This country road has only two lanes that are flanked by gorgeous large oak trees and spectacular views of the sprawling surrounding vineyards. Napa Valley is commonly referred to as an adult theme park — and for good reason. It’s home to several of the most well-respected wineries in the entire world. Here you will also find Michelin-starred eateries like The Restaurant at Meadowood.
Transport yourself to the Mediterranean with a visit to Castillo di Amoroso winery to indulge in wine tasting with a medieval flair, or enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation at one of the luxurious spas in Napa Valley. The Silverado Trail boasts equally as pretty scenery as Highway 29 but is much less congested. It runs through Napa Valley all the way to Calistoga, and as can be expected, the surrounding views are a real sight to behold.
If you want to experience everything that Napa Valley has to offer, then follow “The Trail.” Dozens of wonderful wineries and picnic points line your path along the way, so you will really be spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink options.
Some of the most famous wineries like Judd’s Hill and Signorello Estate Winery can be found along this trail as well. If you’re looking for something more quaint, there are plenty of small yet equally as high quality wineries in the area such as Fantesca Estate and Winery in St. Helena. Continuing north along the Silverado trail and you will find yourself surrounded by gorgeous Coast Range Mountains, If you keep driving, you will soon reach Calistoga, famous for its mineral pools and hot springs. This Napa Valley wine tour is definitely one for the wine enthusiast’s bucket list!
The Wine Road
Sonoma County is a key player in California’s wine country and no visit would be complete without a drive through its scenic landscapes and vineyards. Sonoma has risen in popularity over recent years thanks to shorter wait times for restaurants and wine tastings than those experienced in Napa Valley, along with its more casual vibe. There are over 400 wineries in Sonoma, as well as scrumptious local cuisine and a plethora of outdoor activities like cycling, hiking, and hot air balloon rides. The famous Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley are all encompassed by The Wine Road, which twists and turns through the beautiful Redwood Forest and features over 150 vineyards to satisfy your taste buds.
Madera Wine Trail
This trail in a historic wine region of the central valley is becoming more and more popular as small wineries establish themselves. A laid-back, low-key vibe is what you will find here, where you can try a variety of sweet wines for which this area is well-known thanks to the intense heat in the summer. Look out for the Wine Showcase days where you can sample delectable wines during free tastings. You will usually need to have a wine trail passport to be able to take part in these, but they are easy to purchase online ahead of time.
Placer County
The wineries of Placer County can all be found between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. Visitors can enjoy bolder varieties of wine here, reminiscent of those found in Italy and Spain thanks to warmer temperatures over the summer months. If you’re excited by the idea of soaking in the views of breathtaking mountain vistas during a lazy afternoon spent sipping wine and reading a good book, then Placer County won’t disappoint.

Remember Me
California Wine Country: An Adventure Awaits
When I first decided to take a job in California, it wasn’t just about the career move. It was about being close to the heartbeat of the most important wine regions in the country. My love affair with wine was just beginning, and I knew that being in California would allow me to dive headfirst into this world that was quickly capturing my heart.
Fast forward to today—I’m living my dream in Napa, surrounded by vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see. It’s everything I ever hoped for, but what truly amazes me is that Napa is just the start. California wine country is vast, diverse, and full of surprises, with incredible regions waiting to be explored just around the corner.
Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur or just starting to explore the world of wine, visiting California wine country is something every wine lover should experience at least once in their life.
The Rich History of California Wine Country
Wine Country, California, boasts a rich history that dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce wine for religious ceremonies. The region’s wine industry truly began to flourish in the mid-19th century, thanks to European immigrants who brought with them their viticultural expertise and passion.
Despite setbacks like Prohibition in the 1920s and the devastating phylloxera epidemic, California’s wine industry rebounded and gained international recognition. The 1976 “Judgment of Paris,” where California wines outshone French counterparts in a blind tasting, solidified its place on the global stage.
Today, California vineyards, particularly in regions like Napa Valley and Sonoma, are celebrated for their diverse terroirs and world-class wines. This history of perseverance and innovation continues to shape California’s status as a premier wine-producing region.
Why California Wineries Are Special
There’s something magical about California wine country that sets it apart from other wine regions. Perhaps it’s the perfect combination of climate, soil, and innovation that makes this area a winemaker’s paradise.
The state’s diverse microclimates allow for the cultivation of a wide variety of grapes, from the cool-climate Pinot Noir of the Russian River Valley to the bold Zinfandel of Paso Robles. California’s wine country isn’t just about the wine; it’s also about the experience.
Visitors flock to Napa and Sonoma not only for the wine tasting but also for the stunning landscapes, farm-to-table cuisine, and luxurious accommodations. It’s a place where you can savor life’s pleasures, one glass at a time.
What Wine is California Known For?
These are 4 Must-Try Popular California Wines and Varietals:
Cabernet Sauvignon
Arguably the king of California wines, Cabernet Sauvignon is a bona fide Napa Valley wine. Warm days and cool nights help produce grapes with intense flavor and structure. This full-bodied red is known for its bold flavors of blackcurrant, plum, and a hint of oak, making it a favorite for aging and pairing with hearty dishes like steak .
Chardonnay
California’s most popular white wine, Chardonnay , is grown throughout the state but shines particularly in Sonoma County and the Central Coast. This versatile grape variety can produce a range of styles, from crisp and citrusy to rich and buttery, depending on how it’s aged. Its broad appeal makes it a staple in wine cellars and on dinner tables alike.
Zinfandel
Zinfandel is California’s signature grape, with a history as robust as the wine itself. Originating from Croatia, it found a new home in California, particularly in regions like Paso Robles. Known for its bold, fruit-forward flavors of blackberry, cherry, and spice, Zinfandel is a wine that can stand up to rich, flavorful foods.
Pinot Noir
Often considered one of the most challenging grapes to grow, Pinot Noir finds its ideal conditions in California’s cooler coastal regions, where the Pacific Ocean’s cooling influence creates a perfect environment.
In areas like the Russian River Valley and Santa Barbara, this delicate red wine is prized for its complex flavors of cherry, raspberry, and earthy undertones, with a silky texture that’s hard to resist.
Exploring California Wine Country: Main Regions
As of 2024, California is home to 147 officially recognized American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), each with its unique characteristics that contribute to the state’s reputation as a world-class wine producer.
From the iconic Napa Valley AVA and Sonoma County to lesser-known but equally intriguing regions, California’s diverse AVAs showcase a wide range of climates, soils, and grape varieties.
In this section, we’ll explore some of the main wine regions that define California’s vibrant wine landscape, delving into what makes each area special and how they contribute to the richness of the state’s wine offerings.
Napa Valley
Napa Valley is one of the world’s most famous wine regions, especially known for its incredible Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil here mixes volcanic and gravelly types, which helps grow fantastic grapes.
Napa County’s weather, with its hot, dry summers and cool, foggy mornings, gives the grapes rich and complex flavors. The variety of climates in Napa allows them to grow many types of grapes like Chardonnay and Merlot.
Besides great wine, Napa offers fancy wine tastings, top-notch restaurants, and stunning vineyards. Its focus on sustainability and innovation keeps Napa ahead in the wine world.
Sonoma Valley
Sonoma County is Napa Valley’s more laid-back neighbor, but has just as many amazing wines and beautiful scenery.
With 18 different sub-AVAs, Sonoma’s landscape ranges from cool, foggy hills to warmer inland valleys, making it very diverse. The cool Russian River Valley is perfect for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while the warmer Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys are ideal for Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Sonoma is full of small, family-run wineries, so wine tastings here feel personal and cozy. Many vineyards use organic and eco-friendly farming, which makes their wines unique.
Paso Robles
Paso Robles is a rapidly growing wine region known for its bold red wines like Zinfandel and Rhône varieties such as Syrah and Grenache.
The soil here has lots of limestone, and the big differences between hot days and cool nights help the grapes develop great flavors while keeping their natural acidity. The warm, dry climate is perfect for making rich, fruity wines with a good balance.
Paso Robles also has creative winemakers who experiment with different grape blends to make unique wines.
Santa Barbara County
Santa Barbara County is known for its cool-weather wines like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, thanks to its coastal, ocean-influenced climate. The east-to-west valleys let in fog and cool ocean breezes, creating a cooler climate perfect for making refined wines.
The Santa Ynez Valley and Sta. Rita Hills are especially famous for their Pinot Noir, while areas like Happy Canyon are starting to shine with Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon.
The different soil types, from sandy to clay, add a variety of flavors to Santa Barbara wines. The area also offers a relaxed wine-tasting experience with beautiful views of the ocean and hills, blending traditional and modern winemaking techniques.
Lesser Known Regions
Temecula valley ava.
The Temecula Valley AVA, located near Los Angeles in Southern California, is known for its warm climate and diverse wines, including robust reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and crisp whites like Sauvignon Blanc. Close to the Pacific Ocean, the region benefits from cooling breezes, producing balanced, flavorful wines in a scenic setting
Mendocino County AVA
Mendocino County, nestled in Northern California, is a hidden gem in the wine world, known for its rugged landscapes and commitment to organic and sustainable viticulture. The region boasts a diverse range of microclimates, producing everything from rich reds to crisp whites, with a special emphasis on Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. Mendocino’s AVAs, like Anderson Valley, are gaining recognition for their distinctive wines that reflect the county’s unique terroir.
Santa Lucia Highlands AVA
The Santa Lucia Highlands is a sub-AVA within the larger Central Coast AVA in California. Located in Monterey County, this region is known for its cool climate conditions, making it ideal for producing high-quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Sierra Foothills AVA
The Sierra Foothills, a historic wine region in Northern California, is known for its rugged landscapes, rich history, and diverse range of wines. This area, encompassing regions like Murphys and Amador County , offers a unique combination of high elevation, volcanic soils, and a warm, dry climate, which contribute to the production of deeply flavored and robust wines.
The quaint wine regions here are celebrated for their boutique, family-owned wineries and diverse selection of wines, particularly Zinfandel and Barbera.
Livermore Valley AVA
Livermore Valley is one of California’s oldest wine regions, and it played a big part in introducing Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to the United States. The valley’s mix of warm days and cool nights, along with its gravelly soils, is perfect for growing strong, flavorful wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon.
Lodi , located in the heart of California’s Central Valley, is renowned for its old-vine Zinfandel, which produces wines with bold, rich flavors. Lodi has gained recognition as a top wine region, offering everything from full-bodied reds to crisp whites, and is celebrated for its sustainable farming practices.
Santa Cruz Mountains
The Santa Cruz Mountains AVA , located between the San Francisco Bay Area and the Central Coast, is known for its rugged terrain and cool coastal breezes. This unique region produces exceptional Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon, with wines that reflect the area’s diverse microclimates and elevation.
Berkeley might not be famous for vineyards, but it has a vibrant urban wine scene where creative winemakers produce small-batch wines right in the city. The area stands out for its focus on organic, natural winemaking.
Santa Clara Valley
Santa Clara Valley is a historic wine area that blends the old with the new, featuring both long-standing wineries and fresh vineyards. With its Mediterranean climate of warm summers and cool, foggy nights, the region is ideal for producing a variety of wines.
California wine country is a place where passion, tradition, and innovation come together to create something truly special.
Seasoned wine lovers or newbies alike will find something new to discover in this vibrant region. From the bold Cabernets of Napa to the elegant Pinot Noirs of Santa Barbara, California’s wines offer a taste of the state’s rich history and diverse terroir.

This 30-mile Trek Bring Hikers to Some of the Best Restaurants and Hotels in Northern California
Not a fan of dehydrated meals and camping pads? This European-style, inn-to-inn trek may be more your speed.
Evie Carrick is a writer and editor who’s lived in five countries and visited well over 50. She now splits her time between Colorado and Paris, ensuring she doesn't have to live without skiing or L'As du Fallafel.
You don't have to go without a shower or sleep in a tent to experience a multiday trek. In fact, in the Dolomites , a "backpacking trip" often means hiking from one rifugio (a backcountry inn that often serves meals) to the next while a tour company takes care of luggage transfers.
Some U.S. outfitters have taken note, taking care of the less desirable details (read: hauling your stuff from place to place) and substituting cozy inns for blustery tents and Michelin-level meals for dehydrated camping fare.
That's the name of the game during Wine Country Trekking's five day, four night inn-to-inn trek from the heart of San Francisco to the Muir Woods. They take care of the details — booking charming country inns, arranging meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, luggage transfers, and trail maps — so you can focus on the day's journey, typically a hike of nine to 10 miles.
This Iconic California Wine Country Train Is Adding a Luxe High Tea Experience
The trek kicks off near Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco, where a luxury boutique hotel and a Michelin and Wine Spectator -recognized restaurant will be waiting for you. From there, you'll cross the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito for a night in the quaint artist enclave. After Sausalito, the trek becomes less urban with a journey to Muir Beach and Mount Tamalpais before descending into the redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument . The trek ends in the town of Mill Valley where you'll enjoy one final night (and an excellent meal). While Wine Country Trekking does not specify exactly which restaurants and inns trekkers will enjoy, commenters who have previously taken this trip raved about luxe properties like the Pelican Inn at Muir Beach.
The self-led trip includes three full days of hiking, all overnight lodging, daily breakfast, luggage transfers, maps and trail notes, and all taxes and tips. Rates start at $1,275 per person, but can jump to $2,450 depending on dates and occupancy. Treks typically start on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, but can be customized to fit your needs. 4 Great American Wine Regions to Visit Beyond California
Enjoy festivals, local foods and idyllic scenery.
Going on a wine tasting trip is a pleasure not just for the wines, but also for the full wine country experience: trying local foods, staying at quaint inns and enjoying the scenic countryside of rolling hills arrayed with vineyards.
Customers 50-plus remain the biggest segment of wine drinkers, so there should be plenty of peers at wine tastings. A recent study from the U.S. Wine Industry Partnership reported that boomers along with older consumers make up 40 percent of today’s wine market, rising to 65 percent when the mostly 50-plus Gen X segment is included. Arizona’s wine tourism bureau confirms this trend with visitors 55-plus accounting for 40 percent of the state’s winery visits and 64 percent of wine festival attendees.

Keep in mind that heavy drinking has been shown to raise the risk for high blood pressure . Older adults, both drinkers and nondrinkers, are already at risk for hypertension. Drinking responsibly is the key to enjoying any experience.
California’s Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley are the most famous American wine travel destinations, but for those looking for new experiences, the U.S. provides a breadth and depth of wine regions with great tasting opportunities unknown even to some connoisseurs.
From the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York to the high deserts of Arizona, the verdant valleys of Oregon and the traditional farm country of Wisconsin, here are tips on where to go and what to taste at some great alternative wine regions.
Arizona: Verde Valley
Arizona doesn’t seem like a great place to grow wine, but the Verde Valley, comprising more than 200 square miles in the state’s north-central region, is home to the Verde Valley Wine Trail. The trail has more than two dozen wineries in the area, with wines made from more than 40 types of locally grown grapes. The Verde Valley is about 100 miles from Phoenix and 20 miles from Sedona .
The town of Cottonwood is considered the center of Verde Valley wine country, with nine tasting rooms located around Main Street in Old Town. Cottonwood and Sedona can both be used as a base for guided van tours of the valley with stops at multiple properties.
Page Springs Cellars in Cornville showcases a unique setting of vineyard rows arrayed between rough desert hills. Its tasting room also features a bistro menu, live music and an art gallery. Visitors can book harvest tours in September to get a behind-the-scenes look at the whole wine-making process. For a full immersion, a party of four can rent a cabana on the property.
The region even has its own wine school: The Southwest Wine Center at Yavapai College has amazing views over nearby vineyards, plenty of parking and easy accessibility for visitors to experience student-curated wine tastings. And this isn’t some wild and crazy party school. The average student age here is 48, as many retirees move to the area and enroll to learn the art of winemaking and grape growing, says Paula Woolsey, committee member for the Verde Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area).
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
The upcoming 15th annual Sedona Wine Festival (Sept. 27–29) provides a one-stop sampling of Arizona wines. More than 20 wines from Verde Valley and around the state will be featured in tastings and food pairings.
New York: Finger Lakes
The Finger Lakes wine region in upstate New York is home to 150 wineries set amid dazzling lakes, forested hills and small towns recalling traditional Americana. The region is divided into three main wine trails: the Cayuga Lake, Keuka Lake and Seneca Lake trails. These trails group related wineries and offer tasting passports for discounts and event access.
While the region is well known for its sweet Riesling dessert wines, visitors can also enjoy red varietals. For a taste of Riesling, visit one of the originals, the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, and the newer, award-winning Weis Vineyards overlooking Keuka Lake. Glenora Wine and Lakewood Vineyards are recommended stops along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, while Lucas Vineyards is the founding winery of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail.

Visitors can stay at charming B&Bs such as the historic Belva Lockwood Inn in Owego or the restored Victorian manor of the 1897 Beekman House Bed & Breakfast between Seneca and Keuka lakes. The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel on the Seneca Lake waterfront provides a full-service traditional hotel experience.
Fall events include farmers markets throughout October, live music shows and special wine-tasting dinners. Some notable events include the Guthrie Wineglass Marathon, and the Finger Lakes Wine Festival in Watkins Glen, as well as the annual spring GlassFest in Corning.
Oregon: Willamette Valley
The rolling hills of Oregon’s scenic Willamette Valley is blanketed with hundreds of wineries, many within an hour’s drive of the Portland area. The region is famous for its pinot noir wines, but visitors should try new white wine and sparkling wine offerings.
Sip and stay at the Setting Inn in Newburg, an eight-room hilltop property with great views, comfy rooms and an array of mostly local breakfast goodies and juice breakfast boxes included with a stay. Its stylish in-house tasting room with high-end pinot noir and chardonnay wines and carefully curated charcuterie plates is worth a visit for nonguests as well. The location is reminiscent of Napa Valley, the site of Setting Inn’s original property and winery.
Benza Vineyards in Hillsboro features its multiple highly rated pinot noirs and pinot gris wines to sample with snacks in the rustic tasting room and outdoor gardens patrolled by winery dogs and guarded by a colorful flock of chickens.
The Dundee Hotel is not only a convenient central location from which to tour Willamette wineries, but also has four tasting rooms located on the ground floor — so no need to find a designated driver. Nearby, the recently opened Lytle-Barnett Aubaine tasting room in town shares the breadth of Willamette Valley variety with chardonnays and sparkling wines in addition to more traditional pinot noirs.
Enjoy a luxe experience at the Black Walnut Inn & Vineyard with its Mediterranean villa style rooms or its newly opened neighbor, the Grange Estate, for a quirky boutique feel. Vineyard views pair with on-site tastings from The Four Graces winery accompanied with exquisite tasting menus of locally sourced ingredients.
Wisconsin: The Driftless Region
Wisconsin is rightly famous for its cheese, and nothing goes better with cheese than wine. This is a great reason to explore some of Wisconsin’s more than 240 wineries, some with a history dating back to the mid-19th century. Amid cornfields and herds of dairy cows, the Driftless wine region of west-central and southern Wisconsin is a scenic and surprising wine destination easily drivable from Chicago and Milwaukee.
The Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, near the vacation destination of Wisconsin Dells, was founded in 1846, then revived in the 1970s by the Wollersheim family who have since proved that Wisconsin wines have a lasting appeal with multiple national wine awards.
Wollersheim features a Napa-like visitor experience with a hilltop villa containing a tasting room, shop and bistro, with gardens for outdoor tastings. Try their signature Domaine du Sac red wine made from estate-grown Maréchal Foch grapes.
Bailey’s Run Vineyard & Winery, nestled in the rolling hills of New Glarus in southern Wisconsin, declares that this is the place “where wine goes to have fun.” The combined winery and distillery live up to its billing with popular Friday fish fries, live music events and even a local group of women in their 60s and 70s who come to hold regular mah-jongg sessions with their wine tastings. Try the light and dry Marquette wines.
Hawk’s Mill Winery, located close to the Illinois border, focuses on local Marquette grapes as well as sweet novelty-label wines, including The Geezer, a popular birthday gift for “seniors with a sense of humor,” says Teresa Joranlien, co-owner of the winery. Winery events including euchre card game tournaments and bingo nights draw the 50-plus crowd to its expanded tasting room and restaurant, Joranlien says. For a true small-town Midwestern event, Hawk’s Mill hosts a “Doe Camp Weekend” wine event at the start of deer hunting season for the wives of hunters.
