Black Sciare: imprints of Etna that give rise to unique micro-terroirs

With its eruptions, Etna produces sciare, lava layers , that through long physical-chemical processes give rise to sandy and cultivable soils, on the slopes of the volcano. Each lava flow, that took place in different historical periods, determines a specific soil composition , that makes the wine that comes from that micro-territory unique. An heroic viticulture context, made special by the altitude (about 800 m a.s.l. ) and the presence of the volcano. An experience not to be missed .

Discovering Mountain Viticulture - Cantina Donnafugata

Discovering Mountain Viticulture

On Etna, Donnafugata cultivates its vineyards between 700 and 750 meters above sea level in a context of mountain viticulture . At these altitudes the continental climate meets the Sicilian sun creating unique climatic conditions: rain and snow in autumn and winter, mild temperatures in spring and summers with wide temperature ranges give a marked aromatic freshness to the wines of this area. Etna is also characterized by traditional forms of cultivation such as the Etna “alberello” bush training system and by valuable native vines : the Carricante which produces whites with a marked minerality and the Nerello Mascalese which gives life to wines of extraordinary elegance.

Etna and surrounding woodland

Etna and surrounding woodland - Cantine Donnafugata

Donnafugata wines express authentic and sustainable Sicilian winemaking. Taking care of the land means paying attention to the quality of production and promoting a relationship of mutual benefit between wine and plant. Therefore, the creation of horticultural and other gardens on the estates , the integration of agricultural and natural environments , and the protection of natural areas are acts that nurture agriculture and, above all, culture, enrich the landscape with biodiversity , and enhance its beauty .

The farming landscape that surrounds the Randazzo estate, with its terraces and millstones , woods and lava flows , forms a unique environmental mosaic. Passing through the vineyards, looking up at the mountain and strolling in the woods, you’ll also find a surprising quantity of native herbs ; at any time of year, the sights, smells and flavours are a delicious assault on the senses.

Etna & Wine Tour itinerary

Meeting point giarre.

Our excursion begins at the motorway exit in Giarre. Already during the ride, our English-speaking guide will tell you interesting facts about the surroundings and about Etna, the largest active volcano on the Eurasian plate.

You will learn about the formation of Etna and how this volcano is reflected in the thoughts, customs and habits of the people who inhabit it.

You can enjoy comfortable and safe transport in a 6-seater Toyota, Nissan or Mitsubishi or a 7-seater Mercedes minivan. We guarantee you:

  • Vehicles with regular NCC registration,
  • Authorised driver with proof of professional qualification.

TOWARDS ETNA PARK

We set off in the direction of Etna Park. We leave the beautiful Lemon Riviera and approach the villages on Mount Etna.

From 1000 m above sea level, the nature reserve “Parco dell’Etna” (Etna Park) extends over an area of 720 km². We encounter lava flows that, like black highways, cut through the slope of the mountain: the “sciara”, as the lava is called when it is cold and hard.

TREKKING – CRATER VISIT

We start our trekking on the north side of Etna. As we walk among pines, beeches and globally unique indigenous plants, such as the beguiling smelling Etna broom ( Genista aetnensis ) and the Etna birch ( Betula aetnensis ), we can admire this unusual landscape and enjoy breathtaking views.

We reach the edge of a side crater, where the boiling hot lava flowed out of the slope. In front of us, however, is not just this one crater, but a series of seven craters in total. We are standing on the “buttonline” of the Sartorius craters, which was formed during the eruption of 1865 .

They were named after the geologist Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen. He produced such good and accurate maps of Etna that they were used for about 100 years, until the switch to satellite imagery in the 1980s.

We walk along these 7 craters and can admire the north-eastern crater, one of the 4 summit craters of Etna, and Monte Frumento delle Concazze, the largest of the more than 300 lateral craters of Etna.

TASTING OF HONEYS, CREAMS AND LIQUEURS OF ETNA

After the hike you can taste the sweetest specialities of Etna for free: Honey, also called the gold of Etna; creams made from pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts; Modica chocolate and of course liqueurs such as the fire of Etna, pistachio, almond, hazelnut, tangerine, melon liqueurs,…

LAVA TUNNEL

Now we want to discover what lies beneath the hard crust of lava. In front of us we see a crack in the ground: one of about 190 lava tunnels on Etna, created by the flow of hot lava.

Equipped with helmets and lamps, we descend and begin the underground adventure to discover the most hidden secrets of “a muntagna”, as the Sicilians call Etna.

VISIT OF A WINERY, WINE TASTING & LUNCH

After the trekking we visit one of the most renowned wineries of Etna to get to know the volcanic wines. After a guided tour of the winery and learning about wine making here on Etna, a tasting of wines and matching local specialities awaits us.

You have two choices:

  • For the small appetite , there is the version with 4 wines and starters (cheese, sausage, ham, olives, etc.).
  • If you want to get to know the typical Sicilian cuisine better, you can choose the option with 5 wines and a complete menu with antipasti, first and second course (pasta, meat with side dishes) and dessert.

RETURN – UNTIL THE NEXT ADVENTURE!

After exploring Etna inside and out, we have reached the end of our day together. Well fortified, we return to the starting point of our journey.

Until the next adventure!

Important information about the tour

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily – Mount Etna wine tastings

Catania is one of the most underrated Italian cities. Located in eastern Sicily, in the shadow of Mount Etna, its fate is sealed by volcanic eruptions. However, Catania’s proximity to Etna also translates to a unique soil. The volcano’s presence and taste forever mark the area’s wine production. Therefore, if you are exploring this side of Sicily, join one or more wine tours from Catania and discover the region’s smoky wines.

The Mount Etna eruptions enrich the soil in unique ways, and that’s why the area produces some of the best wines worldwide. Growing grapes and making wine -red and white- on the slopes of Mount Etna results in delicious wine that you can’t taste elsewhere in Europe. The Etna DOC is the oldest in Sicily and among the oldest in Italy. The red Etna Rosso is the most famous wine in the region, usually made of the Nerello Mascalese grape variety (80%) and up to 20% of Nerello Cappuccio grapes.

So, in this article, you will find the best wine tastings in Catania , together with info and prices. I preferred to split this article into two sections. The first section is dedicated to people willing to taste as much Sicilian wine as possible. That said, the sightseeing part is less present in these tours. On the other hand, if you are more into exploring the region and sipping an occasional glass of wine, the second section is more for you.

So, let’s start with the best Catania wine tastings and what to expect from them.

The best wine tours from Catania for wine lovers

As I stated above, in this section, you will find Catania wine tours dealing exclusively with wine tastings in various wineries. While you will see some of Sicily’s landscape, you probably won’t have much time to explore the area. The goal is to taste as much Etna wine as possible and get a complete overview of its unique taste.

The three best Etna wineries (Private tour)

For dedicated wine lovers, that’s the top Etna wine tasting tour  you can take in Sicily. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Catania (available also from Messina) and drive you to three fantastic wineries in Etna . The three wine estates you’ll visit are family-run, and the Sicilian landscape will be out of your window. The owners will greet you at each winery, and the price includes free food tasting.

However, this wine tour is even more remarkable because you can taste unlimited wine . Specifically, you’ll taste four wines from every winery. Last but not least, after the tour’s end, your guide will drive you back to your hotel. Please keep in mind that this is a private tour: that said, while its price is slightly elevated, the tour will be just for you and your friends. If you can afford the cost, this is one of the best wine tours you can take in Catania.

Duration : ~7 hours .

Price : 185 euros .

How to book : Book here the 3 best Etna wineries private tour .

Wine Tasting, Lunch, and Oranges (Private tour)

This is another fantastic private tour that will bring you close to Sicily’s nature. After your tour guide picks you up from your Catania accommodation, they’ll drive you to a beautiful farm. This looks like a private park, and you’ll stroll through the orange plantation, where you’ll learn about the different kinds of citrus. Then, inside the villa, you’ll meet with a sommelier who’ll explain the wine-making process to you.

This is an estate owned for centuries by the same family, and at the tour’s end, you’ll taste their delicious wines together with a traditional Sicilian lunch. After this private tour finishes, the guide will bring you back to your hotel in Catania.

Despite its elevated price, it’s one of the best wine tours from Catania, and it’s a fantastic experience overall.

Duration : 4 hours .

Price : 350 euros .

How to book : Book here this fantastic private tour .

Mount Etna wine tour

If you’re on a tight budget on your journey to Catania but still like to taste some wine from Etna’s soil, there’s also a very affordable wine tour . However, please keep in mind that you’ll have to reach the estate independently. If you rent a car in Sicily, it’s easy to reach it; on the other hand, if you use public transport (or taxi), make sure to see your transportation options. See the exact location on the tour’s page.

So, in this winery visit, you’ll taste 4 to 7 different wines, and a sommelier will guide you through the estate’s cellars. There’s also a light lunch included, consisting of cheese, pork, and cannolo.

Duration : 1,5-2 hours .

Price : 41 euros for 4 wines / 57 for 7 wines .

How to book : Book the affordable tour here .

The best wine tours from Catania, Sicily, for explorers

The second section of this travel guide to the best wine-tasting tours from Catania is all about exploring the region. Of course, there are various stops for wine tasting, but here, wine is a nice extra for your day trip in Sicily. The focus is towns and villages, and there are only occasional stops for a glass of Sicilian wine. If you are more into exploring the region and having a glass here and there, this section will cover your travel needs.

Godfather private guided tour with wine-tasting

While it is an old cliche to associate Sicily exclusively with the Mafia, there’s one great tour in the region for movie lovers. If you are a fan of Coppola’s iconic Godfather movies , this tour from Catania is for you. Your guide will pick you up from your Catania hotel and, for the next 6 to 8 hours, will drive you to the movie’s iconic locations.

You will start from Savoca, where the iconic Bar Vitelli is, and continue to Santa Lucia church, where Michael Corleone married. After strolling through the streets of Savoca, you’ll stop for a glass of wine before continuing to Forza D’Agro and the Norman Castle with its stunning views. Your guide will share plenty of facts about the movie, and after the tour’s end, you can choose to have dinner at a local restaurant, including a delicious Sicilian wine tasting .

After a long day out and about, your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Catania. That’s a fantastic tour, and it’s also a private one.

Duration : 6-8 hours (the exact duration depends on whether you have dinner or not).

Price : 120-230 euros.

How to book : Book here the Godfather tour .

Home cooking with dinner and Etna wine

For this tour, you won’t have to leave Catania. However, this is one of the best things to do in Catania if you enjoy immersing in local cultures. Claudia, your host, opens her house in downtown Catania to show you how to cook a proper Sicilian meal . Using fresh and raw products from Sicily, you’ll learn how to prepare fish and vegetables bought from the local market.

The four-course meal you’ll prepare with Claudia will consist of tomatoes, eggplants, anchovies, various vegetables, and pannacotta. In addition, of course, the meal includes a tasting of Sicilian wines.

Duration : 3 hours.

Price : 95 euros.

How to book : Book here the home cooking and wine tour .

Full-day Mount Etna Wine Tour from Catania

If you’d like to combine a visit to Mount Etna and wine tasting , this is one of the best tours you can have in the region. Start your day early in the morning and head towards the iconic Rifugio Sapienza, Etna’s most famous shelter. Afterward, you’ll walk along natural paths and visit one of the volcano’s craters. Then, you can decide to stay in that area, which is at 2,000 meters, or alternatively book the high altitude option. The latter means you’ll have to ride a cable car, and a 4×4 vehicle will bring you up to 2,900 meters at Torre del Filosofo.

Then, together with your guide, you’ll explore a lava cave, and at the tour’s end, you’ll stop at a winery for tasting, including one sparkling and four still wines. A light meal is included, and afterward, the guide will drive you back to your accommodation in Catania.

Duration : 7 hours .

Price : 112 euros .

How to book : Book the full-day Etna tour .

Etna and Taormina wine tour (day trip)

Now, while this day trip from Catania follows an identical route to the one above, this tour has a bonus: it will bring you to the world-famous Taormina , the city that even Goethe fell in love with. Located on dramatic cliffs and enjoying fantastic views of the open sea, Taormina is a gem. Despite being compact in size, it’s one of the most beautiful towns you’ll see in Sicily.

While the exploration of Mount Etna and Taormina is at the heart of this tour, this doesn’t mean that there’s not some wine included. On the contrary, after a tiring day walking on Etna’s slopes and before strolling through Taormina’s streets, you’ll stop at a restaurant for a quick lunch and wine tasting. Then, after concluding your Taormina wine tour and spending time in the city, the tour guide will drive you back to Catania.

Duration : 8 hours .

Price : 98 euros .

How to book : Book the Etna and Taormina day trip .

Buongiorno! Today marks the beginning of your Sicilian escapade as you make your own way to your hotel in Noto.

Sicily, the Mediterranean’s largest island, is dominated by Europe’s highest and most active volcano, Mount Etna, and boasts an array of ancient Greek temples, Baroque architecture, a sparkling coastline, along with delicious cuisine born of a mix of cultural influences. Take the afternoon to settle into your accommodation and rest before your adventure begins.

Arrival & Transfers:

Please book your flights to arrive anytime at Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport (CTA). Airport transfers are not included for your tour. The hotel is located approximately a one-hour drive from Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport (CTA). Check-in on Day 1 is at 2pm.

After breakfast, join your group to explore Syracuse and Ortigia. This small island of Ortigia is connected to Syracuse by a bridge dating back to the 16th century and is full of narrow medieval lanes and baroque piazzas. As you stroll through its streets, enjoy the aroma of fresh bread from local bakeries and a salty sea breeze. Visit the Piazza del Duomo, where the Cathedral of Syracuse, built over an ancient Greek temple, stands as a testament to the island’s layered history.

Next, hop on a harbour cruise to view Ortigia from the sea, offering a unique perspective of the island’s ancient fortifications and stunning waterfront. After, head to the Syracuse Archaeological Park to explore the grandeur of the Greek theatre, one of the largest of its kind, and the Roman amphitheatre, imagining the spectacles that once entertained thousands. The scent of pine trees and the warmth of the Mediterranean sun will accompany your journey through these ancient ruins.

The afternoon is free for you to explore at your leisure. You might choose to pass through the Royal Gate of Noto – a grand triumphal arch marking the start of the main street. Discover countless beautiful palaces, finely detailed churches, the glorious Teatro Tina di Lorenzo and the magnificent Noto Cathedral. Later, return to your hotel for a restful evening.

Travel time: Coach – approx. 2.5 hours

Today, explore the Baroque towns of Noto, Ragusa, and Modica, each meticulously rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693. Begin your journey along Noto’s elegant Corso Vittorio Emanuele, flanked by honey-stoned palazzi and ornate churches.

Travel to Ragusa, where you step straight onto the real-life set of the TV series ‘Inspector Montalbano,’ filmed in and around this captivating town. Meandering through Ragusa’s winding streets, take in the stunning architecture and vibrant local life that brings the series to life. The sound of church bells and the murmur of conversations in the piazzas enhance the town’s historical ambience, offering a glimpse into everyday Sicilian life.

Continue to UNESCO World Heritage-listed Modica, known as the ‘City of a Hundred Churches’. Between the captivating facades and detailed artistry of these Sicilian Baroque structures, you’ll find a world rich with chocolate. Renowned makers such as Bonajuto and Donna Elvira craft Modica’s signature rough-ground chocolate – a practice harking back to the millennia-old tradition of Meso-American cultures.

A certain highlight of the day: indulge in a tasting session and savour the rich, grainy texture and intense flavours of this famous chocolate.

Today, soak up the Mediterranean sun in the gorgeous beach town of Cefalu on the way to Palermo. Nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the dramatic Rocca di Cefalu, the town boasts stunning sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and the majestic Cefalu Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its Norman architecture and Byzantine mosaics.

Wander through narrow, cobblestone streets lined with charming shops, vibrant cafes, and historic buildings, all while savouring Cefalu’s aromas of fresh seafood, the gentle sea breeze and perhaps a refreshing gelato on the sand.

Arrive in Palermo later this afternoon, Sicily’s vibrant capital renowned for its architecture from the Palermo Cathedral and the Norman Palace with its exquisite Palatine Chapel to the Baroque splendour of the Quattro Canti. Settle into your accommodation and enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Travel time: Coach – approx. four hours

Seize the day with a walking tour of Palermo, starting at the gilded Byzantine-, Norman- and Fatimid-influenced Palatine Chapel. Wander onward to the Cathedral of Palermo – home to the tombs of Holy Roman Emperors – and the central square of Quattro Canti.

After, journey to Monreale – a historic town on the slopes of Monte Caputo. Your guide will lead you to Monreale Cathedral, one of the finest Norman constructions in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage building showcases a stunning blend of Norman, Arab, and Byzantine influences, most famously seen in its dazzling mosaics depicting biblical scenes. The cathedral’s cloisters, with their intricately carved columns and serene garden, add to the site’s splendour.

Continue on for a tour of the town, encountering picturesque views of the Conca d’Oro valley, quaint shops, and delightful cafes serving traditional Sicilian pastries.

Enjoy the rest of the evening at your own pace.

Your day begins with a visit to the enchanting hilltop town of Erice, where you’ll start with a sweet treat at Maria Grammatico’s renowned bakery. Here, you’ll indulge in her famous pasticcini, soft almond biscuits that melt in your mouth, perfectly complemented by a glass of local liqueur.

Next, your journey takes you past Trapani’s ancient salt pans, a landscape dotted with windmills and shimmering salt flats. You then arrive at Selinunte, one of the most impressive Greek archaeological sites in the Mediterranean. On a guided tour, you’ll explore the grand temples and ancient ruins, marvelling at the scale and craftsmanship of this ancient city.

In the evening, reach Agrigento and unwind after this full day of exploration.

Travel time: Coach – approx. 4.5 hours

Your day begins with a guided visit to one of Sicily’s most iconic sites: the Valle dei Templi. This awe-inspiring collection of ancient Greek temples is nestled in a valley filled with almond trees. As you walk among the romantically ruined temples, you’ll be transported back in time, imagining the grandeur of these structures in their prime.

The scent of almond blossoms and the sight of the majestic Temple of Concordia and the Temple of Juno, among others, provide a feast for the senses. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998, the Valley of the Temples has inspired countless artists, poets, and writers with its timeless beauty.

Visit the private estate of Geracello for a delightful lunch. After, head east towards Piazza Armerina, where a guided tour of the Roman villa awaits. The highlight of this villa is its incredible floor mosaic, depicting intricate scenes of Roman life in vivid detail. As you explore the villa, the artistry and craftsmanship of these ancient mosaics will leave you in awe.

Your journey continues to the coastal town of Naxos, where you check into your hotel for the evening.

Travel time: Coach – approx. three hours

Following breakfast at your hotel set out for a guided tour of Taormina. Witness Taormina’s Greco-Roman origins, among the well-preserved ruins of the ancient theatre that overlooks the sparkling Ionian Sea. Wander through Taormina’s quaint alleys, discovering charming cafes tucked away in hidden corners. Discover the vibrant local art scene through multiple galleries adorned with Sicilian landscapes and intricate ceramics.

After the tour concludes, the afternoon unfolds at your leisure. You may wish to explore the ancient ruins of Naxos, relax on the sands of its pristine beaches or wander through the charming Cycladic villages nearby.

Gather your energy over breakfast, then prepare for your Mount Etna adventure. Mount Etna, standing at over 3,300 meters tall, dominates the Sicilian landscape with its ever-changing volcanic terrain, from fertile slopes dotted with vineyards to stark, lunar-like landscapes near its summit, where wisps of steam and occasional eruptions remind of its powerful presence.

After a short walking tour, take the time to explore this fascinating area at your own pace. In the afternoon, taste the fruits of the volcanic soil with lunch at a local winery including two paired glasses of wine, appetisers, a pasta dish, sides, fruit and water.

At the end of the day, return to your hotel for an evening at your leisure.

The Future of Wine Is White

(Bloomberg) -- Under a bright California sun, I’m sipping a crisp, juicy, salty-tasting white, a vermentino with a very seductive texture. On the Italian island of Sardinia, you’d drink wines made from this often-underrated grape with sea urchin or spit-roasted suckling pig on a perfect beach. You get the idea.

But I’m savoring a new Napa Valley version, the second vintage from well-known winemaker Steve Matthiasson. It’s one of several whites in his lineup, which also includes a light, pretty scheurebe, a grape native to Germany.

Although the most celebrated wines in the valley are still the super-pricey cabernets and cabernet blends you know and maybe love, during several recent visits I’ve encountered dozens of surprising new whites. While some, such as the just-released inaugural chenin blancs from Larkmead and Palisades Canyon, hearken back to Napa’s past before cabernet took over in the 1980s and ’90s, this white trend started about seven years ago with the valley’s ever-growing number of sophisticated, expensive sauvignon blancs.

Napa’s new love affair is part of the wider global momentum for whites in regions famous for grand reds, including France’s Rhône Valley, Italy’s Mt. Etna and many others.

Why? Well, they’re what so many of us want to drink!

A 2023 report from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OUV), an intergovernmental institution that deals with wine, announced that global thirst for whites and rosés now surpasses demand for reds. And in the US, market-research firm NIQ has reported that over the four weeks ended May 18 alone, whites accounted for 50.5% of wine consumption, compared with red at 43.1% and rosé at 6.1%.

Put the shift down to changing taste fashions, the younger generation and climate change. As Florence Quiot, co-president of the Côtes du Rhône section of Rhône Valley trade association Inter Rhône, puts it, “Currently white wines are very well-adapted to the modern taste and way of drinking.”

In other words: While big, bold, tannin-rich reds are great with steak, today people dine on more diverse fare and aim for healthier diets, so they look for fresher, lighter and easier wines to match.

The switch in France has been particularly dramatic. In 2000 reds accounted for 56% of wine production. Twenty-one years later that number had dipped to 33%, while whites rose from 36% of production in 2000 to 50% in 2021.

A recent tasting of Rhône whites in New York showed just how diverse they are—from fresh, lively and lean to rich, powerful and textured. About 12% of the valley’s wine production is white, up from 7% in 2015, but Inter Rhône has stated that the region intends to increase production significantly by the end of the decade.

In Bordeaux’s Médoc—home to first growths such as Château Lafite Rothschild—Château Brane Cantenac released its first white with the 2019 vintage, while Château Margaux added a second white, the 2022 Pavillon Blanc Second Vin, earlier this year. Château Loudenne is planting viognier, chenin blanc and sauvignon gris. Proposed new regulations aim to permit other varieties including albariño, voltis, liliorila and floréal.

In Italy, on Mt. Etna, there were 28% more bianco bottlings in 2022 than a year earlier, according to the Etna wine consortium, and the number of biancos is on track to eventually equal that of its rich, expressive rossos.

Global warming is partly responsible. Most whites are picked early, before the wildfires threaten, and even if grapes are slightly underripe they can still make delicious wines. Etna’s main white grape, carricante, is more resilient and adaptable to extreme weather than the region’s red grapes and keeps its freshness even in super-hot vintages.

You might think China, where red wine has always been king, would be the holdout. Not so fast, says Lenz Moser, an Austrian winemaker who’s spent 20 years there working with Changyu, the country’s biggest wine producer, and makes his own white from cabernet. “A white wine boom started two years ago,” he says. “And when the Chinese jump on something, they really jump.”

Nine New White Wines to Try

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA2023 Matthiasson Vermentino Cressida Vineyard ($32)With bracing acidity, notes of citrus and a lip-smacking taste that reminds me of salty sea spray, this mineral-rich white just shouts “refreshing.”

2023 Materra Cunat Family Vineyards Yamabuki Albariño ($38)The inaugural vintage of this light, refreshing, lively albariño from the Oak Knoll district is a taste combo of bright lemons and minerals.

2023 Robert Biale Clementina Greco Bianco ($50)The greco is the great white grape in Italy’s Campania region. This Napa version is deep and rich, with aromas of peaches and jasmine, plus citrus and apricot flavor notes.

2022 Pott Wine 20m3 Viognier ($60)This honeysuckle- and flint-scented white with notes of juicy ripe pears and a lush texture is one of my favorite Napa whites. Harvested early in August to preserve freshness, it was fermented and aged in clay amphoras handmade in Italy.

2023 Larkmead Estate Chenin Blanc ($75) This just-released mineral-and-earth white is bright, pure, complex and round. The grapes come from the winery’s experimental research block of vines in response to a changing climate. Available to the winery’s Solari Membership only.

RHÔNE VALLEY, FRANCE2022 Domaine Alary L’Estevanas Cairanne Blanc ($23)The organic, family-run domaine makes several whites, including this fresh, floral, bargain-priced, complex blend of clairette and roussanne with ripe peach flavors.

2022 Domaine de la Mordorée La Reine des Bois Lirac ($52)An organic, biodynamic blend of seven varieties—including clairette—it’s fresh and lively with soft but vibrant fruit, herbal spiciness and a kick of lime zest.

2022 M. Chapoutier La Bernardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Heritage ($85)From organically grown grapes, this rich golden-colored blend of clairette and grenache blanc has intense aromas of candied lemons and white peaches. It brims with mineral savor.

MT. ETNA, ITALY2022 Maugeri Contrada Volpare Etna Bianco Superiore ($35) The Superiore designation is limited to whites from the Milo area on the volcano’s eastern slope. This relatively new producer makes several. This one tastes of wet stones and citrus peel and reminds me of Chablis.
