Celebrity Edge Itineraries

Celebrity edge review, review of celebrity edge.

The 2018-built Celebrity Edge cruise ship is the first of all five EDGE-class newbuilds - with sisterships Celebrity Apex (2021), Celebrity Beyond (2022), Celebrity Ascent (2023) and Celebrity Xcel (2025).

The vessel (IMO number 9812705) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 248325000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 as the Greece-based Chandris Line (cruise shipping operations between 1974-1996). In 1997, Royal Caribbean International (RCI) merged with "Celebrity Cruises Ltd" to become "Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd" (RCCL). The "X" on ship funnels is the Greek letter chi (standing for "Chandris").

Common features of Celebrity Cruises ships include aft-located glass-walled dining rooms, signature alternate dining venues, bars and lounges, spacious Atrium lobby areas, a large number of balcony staterooms, large sundecks with swimming pools, The Retreat (adults-only sundeck with full-size swimming pool, Jacuzzi, cabanas, poolside full bar service), Rooftop Terrace (top-deck outdoor lounge-restaurant-cinema), large Spa (with Thermal Suites), premium retail shops selling top-brand merchandise.

The 2900-passenger ship Celebrity Edge is the first of four cruise ships scheduled to debut for Celebrity Cruises under its Project Edge. Celebrity Edge debuted in November 2018. The company promised "small-ship itineraries with large-ship amenities", destination-rich experiences and iconic architecture.

Decks and Cabins

Most Celebrity Edge staterooms are Balcony rooms. There are also a number of wheelchair-accessible rooms. Of all the 1467 staterooms, 918 are Edge Staterooms (with Infinite Verandas) and 176 are suites.

The boat has 15 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 10 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

The ship's four main dining venues (capacity 360 seats each) share one base menu with specific to each restaurant menu items. Suite passengers dine at the exclusive "Luminae At the Retreat". AquaClass passengers dine at the exclusive "Blu". The raw food bar "Raw on 5" is a new eatery, just like the cantilevered "Magic Carpet" (bar-lounge-restaurant venue). Another new dining-entertainment concept is "Eden" (bar-lounge-restaurant).

During the day, "Le Grand Bistro" (in the Atrium on Deck 4) operates as patisserie and cafeteria serving French cuisine. In the evenings, Le Grand Bistro transforms into "Le Petite Chef" - new dining-entertainment concept via an exclusive partnership with TableMation Studios (US multimedia company) and Skullmapping (a 2010-founded collective of filmmakers and visual artists). Dinner experience includes visual mapping technology with animated 3D characters projected (from above) onto tables and on plates. The VIP dining is at a fixed surcharge. It costs USD 25 pp (Le Grand Bistro) and USD 55 pp (Le Petite Chef).

Ship's other restaurants are named Cosmopolitan, Normandie, Cyprus, Tuscan, Fine Cut Steakhouse. Traditional for all new Celebrity ships is "Rooftop Garden Grill". Among the most popular bars are Eden Bar, Martini Bar, Sunset Bar, Pool Bar.

Celebrity Edge ship has 4 main dining rooms and 6 new-to-Celebrity Cruises specialty restaurants. In total, the cruise ship has 15 restaurants and cafes, 12 bars and lounges.

Passengers in AquaClass staterooms or Suites eat at Blu Restaurant, offering lighter "spa-inspired" cuisine. The Luminae Restaurant is named "Luminae at The Retreat" and (along with Blu) is part of the private, Suite Class passengers exclusive complex "The Retreat". Suite passengers have also the option to eat in the Main Dining Rooms / MDRs (Normandie Restaurant, Tuscan Restaurant, Cosmopolitan Restaurant, Cyprus Restaurant). These 4 complimentary restaurants serve menus inspired by the itinerary/destinations visited. Each restaurant offers regional wines and themed cocktails, dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients, also a rotating menu of Signature dishes for dinner (changing every evening) and a Classic dinner menu. The ship's main restaurants are served by dedicated to each table wait staff (sommelier, assistant waiter, head waiter). Passengers are assigned to one of the 4 MDRs but still have the option (upon request) to dine in the other 3.

Celebrity Edge offers the company's traditional "Celebrity Select Dining" (your-time dining for dinners) option, which is renamed to "Celebrity Select Dining Plus". Passengers can make reservations in any of the 4 MDRs if they know they want to eat at a specific restaurant and dinner time, or they can simply show up and enjoy dinner on their own time.

In addition to the 4 MDR restaurants, there are plenty of complimentary dining venues, such as Oceanview Cafe (live cooking stations, bakery), Mast Grill (poolside), Spa Cafe & Juice Bar (healthy food and beverages), Eden Cafe (wide variety of breakfast and lunch items). The ship also has two outdoor alfresco seating venues.

Celebrity Edge has a total of 11 bars and lounges, including Eden Lounge, Cafe al Bacio, The Club, Sunset Bar, Theater Bar, Casino Bar, Martini Bar, Pool Bar, Il Secondo Bacio, The Retreat Pool Bar, The Retreat Lounge.

The ship has a number of for-fee restaurants (at surcharge per person), including Qsine (USD 45 pp), Tuscan Grill (Italian steakhouse, USD 45 pp), Murano (French, USD 45 pp), Lawn Club Grill (DIY steaks, USD 40 pp), Bistro on 5 (creperie, USD 10 pp), The Porch (USD 5 pp, panini restaurant open for breakfast and lunch). At Qsine, passengers can order on iPads, then waiters bring the food in the order of choosing.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Lawn Deck is equipped with real grass and the vessel has more deck chairs than others, offering a calm atmosphere under the sun. The Celebrity iLounge gives guests computer tutorial classes and is also a representative of Apple, providing access to the most affordable Mac products available at duty-free prices. Another feature of Celebrity Edge is the AquaSpa café, ideal for a quick lunch after the spa.

Sky Observation Lounge offers live music at sunset, or you can test your luck at Fortune’s Casino – there’s something to do onboard at any time.

Celebrity Edge offers “frictionless arrival", meaning passengers do not have to wait in long lines for the check-in process. This works via a combination of geo-fenced beacons and facial recognition software.

Guests don’t have to carry anything other than smartphones to access their staterooms. Keyless cabin entry is possible through a mobile app. Every part of the stateroom is controllable via touchscreen panel - including lighting, window shades, room temperature.

Celebrity Cruises Edge-class ships "pool deck"

Virtual Concierge app allows booking dinner and spa reservations, drinks ordering, room-service, and other services. Smartphone sensors are used to track passengers on the ship in order to improve services based on their location.

Edge-Class ships also have Celebrity fleet's most technologically advanced Theater Lounge spanning on 3 decks. Here are held fleet's largest number of production shows, with the largest number of performing crew on any premium-brand ship.

Theatre Lounge has all 7 stage areas - 3 large and 4 smaller. Theater's main stage is extending (into the audience) and is flanked by 2x directional rotating platforms raising over 2 m (7 ft) above the main stage. Lounge's design and technology also feature 2 rotating spiral staircases, 10 synchronized (mobile) projection screens, 16 video mapping laser projectors, rigging for aerial performances. Ship's Theatre offers 5 new full shows, including Shakespeare-based "A Hot Summer Night’s Dream" (with acrobatics), "The Jewelry Box" (technological), "Kaleidoscope" (high-energy music and dance), and 2 new "Headline Residency" program-based shows – "Get Up" (pop concert by Black Skull Creative) and "The Purpose" (celebrating the inner self).

The Club is another new (dual-purpose) venue with a large dance floor, a stage for live performances, a giant LED screen and served by its own 2 bars. During the day, The Club offers fun activities and games (including Funovation Laser Maze Challenge, Drone Hunting, laser obstacle course, dance classes, trivia). At night, it transforms into the disco nightclub "Undercover at The Club". The nightly program is themed on the US Prohibition era, with a menu offering signature 1920s craft cocktails and aerial saxophonist performances. Andromeda body scanner allows passengers to become someone else for the entire evening. Hypno Cam Experience is a dance party, in which an Ultra HD camera is passed around and all photos are instantly displayed on the LED screen.

Ship's Kids Club offers by the "Camp at Sea" program over 500 complimentary activities for children of all ages. The facility features two (new for the fleet) separate spaces (for kids and teens) called "The Basement".

Celebrity's signature Rooftop Garden (top-deck dining-entertainment bar lounge) offers expanded facilities and show programming (Rooftop Concert Series, Garden Cinema Series, Taste of Film experience under-the-stars, with 5 new live musical performances).

In 2023, Celebrity introduced pickleball playing courts fleetwide. The sports facilities are complimentary, including the pickleball equipment (net, paddles, balls) but operated with separate scheduled playing times for adults and families (with kids older than 6). While on older vessels the pickleball courts are either on the Sports Deck or at the Multi-Sports Court, on the EGDE ships pickleball is played at the Rooftop Garden.

Grand Plaza

The Grand Plaza serves as the ship's epicenter (midship location) and spans 3 decks. The venue mixes modernity and simplicity and was inspired by the charming era of Transatlantic ocean liners. The concept was designed by Jouin Manku Studio.

The unique space has a striking lighting feature - The Chandelier, an art installation rising over Martini Bar to the ceiling 3 decks above. It is composed of 5 levels and a total of 765 blades illuminated via dynamic LED strips changing their colors from day to night, The Chandelier weighs 7 tons.

The Grand Plaza houses many specialty restaurants, including Fine Cut Steakhouse and Raw on 5 (Deck 5) Le Grand Bistro and Cafe al Bacio (Deck 4), Grand Plaza Cafe (Deck 3), Italian piazzas. At its center (Deck 3) is Martini Bar. Adorning the edges of Grand Plaza are hand-stitched mesh screens that combine over 13,500 art pieces made of leather, fabric, and metal.

Grand Plaza's cafes are the perfect choice for "coffee breaks" - from morning cappuccino to afternoon tea and pre-dinner cocktails - while enjoying live entertainment. In the evenings, Grand Plaza transforms into the ship's social hub with live music performances.

Eden Lounge

Eden is a 3-deck high (aft-location on decks 4, 5, 6) lounge-bar-restaurant venue with live music and shows programming changing throughout the day. Eden Lounge measures 10439 m3 (368640 ft3) and covers a total area of 1175 m2 (12650 ft2).

The lounge has an outward-facing design and combines a signature gastronomic experience (light lunch, 5-course dinner, wine tastings) with live performances, daily lectures, promo events. The lounge has alfresco dining areas on both its sides. In the evening, the lounge transforms into "Eve at Eden", with more provocative entertainment (fusion of performance art, dining, and nightlife.

The Eden Restaurant is part of the lounge and provides 2-hour experience, 5-6-course tasting menu, live entertainment. The Eden Bar serves food and drinks including hand-crafted cocktails.

The lounge's 90-m / 295 ft long ramp envelops the entire space and provides panoramic views. The lounge's unconventional furniture and interiors are designed by Patricia Urquiola (Spain). She also designed the lounge's "Library of Plants" (living garden) and the hanging plant pillars. Lounge's designer is Scott Butler (Wilson Butler Architects, Boston MA). The evening show programming is by Variety Worldwide (NYC New York).

"The Meeting Place" is named the ship's Conference Center (sized 183 m2 / 1970 ft2). This large meeting room is designed by Wilson Butler Architects (Boston MA) and provides advanced audio-visual equipment, varied seating arrangements, private office (event planning space), as well as mobile bars (for food and beverages) and a fully equipped pantry.

Magic Carpet ("outdoor elevator lounge")

A unique feature of the Celebrity Edge ship is its Magic Carpet - a glass structure (glass-roofed, cantilevered platform) the size of a tennis court, able to traverse 14 stories, like a large elevator.

Mounted on the ship's starboard side, the open-air Magic Carpet offers stunning ocean views, comfortable seating, full bar, a stage for live music performances, This "traveling venue" changes its theme, function, and location by extending from Deck 2 up to Deck 16.

Celebrity Cruises Edge-class ships Magic Carpet

Passengers can't simply ride on the Magic Carpet (using it as an elevator). In each location, the "moving lounge" is safely locked, then guests are allowed to step onboard. While repositioning, the venue is without any passengers. Some of its furniture is fixed.

The structure repositions and transforms into a new venue depending on which deck is locked.

  • When positioned on Deck 16 (above pool deck), it becomes a specialty restaurant offering the unique “Dinner on the Edge" al-fresco dining under the stars.
  • When positioned on Resort Deck 14 (in front of the cabanas), it becomes an extension of the pool deck area, also offering live music performances.
  • When positioned on Dining Deck 5, it becomes a specialty restaurant - alfresco dining appendix to the ship's main dining room restaurant.
  • When positioned on Tendering Deck 2, it becomes an extension of the Destination Gateway (embarkation station serving ship's tender operations). Destination Gateway boarding area is dedicated to the so-called "Edge Launches" - luxurious passenger tendering ashore, providing seamless embarkation and disembarkation in all ports of call along the cruise itinerary. This spacious area is fitted with large LCD screens (displaying destination, itinerary and port highlights), comfortable seating (capacity 130 seats), air-conditioning.

"Destination Getaway" is a dedicated embarkation point when the platform is positioned at its lowest level (Tendering Deck 2).

Celebrity Edge Wiki

EDGE-Class ships were designed via an exclusive partnership with Nate Berkus - US interior designer establishing his own company at the age of 24.

The vessel's construction (STX France yard number/hull J34) officially started on November 21, 2016, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at the shipyard in St Nazaire . This was Celebrity's first newbuild since 2008 when Celebrity Solstice was launched.

Celebrity Edge cruise ship construction

On April 28, 2017, Celebrity Cruises announced the name of the ship's godmother - Malala Yousafzai. Then 20-year old, Malala (of Pakistani origin) is a Nobel Laureate (youngest-ever, awarded the prize in 2014 - at the age of 17) and also a UN Messenger of Peace. The cruise company also revealed its 2-year partnership deal with the Malala Fund. Ship's christening ceremony was on December 4, 2018, held at Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale Florida) . The liner then departed Port Everglades on a 2-day preview cruise (Dec 4-6) with invited VIP guests only.

On June 21, 2017, was vessel's keel-laying ceremony held at St Nazaire shipyard . During the ceremony, an 875-ton block was lifted, with a lucky coin placed in the dock prior to the block's lowering into position. With the foundation in place, the ship’s building blocks start to be joined together.

On January 22, 2018, was the ship's float-out. Assisted by 7 tugboats, the liner was floated out 7 months after the coin ceremony. The planned for Jan 20-21 float-out was postponed due to weather conditions. The ship was moored in the shipyard's basin for fitting out (with all the remaining facilities and amenities).

The vessel was officially delivered from the shipbuilder on October 31, 2018, after 23 months of construction work. The delivery ceremony was attended by Richard Fain (RCCL's CEO and Chairman), Lisa Lutoff-Perlo (Celebrity Cruises' CEO and President) and Laurent Castaing (shipyard's General Manager). On the same day was held Celebrity Apex ' keel-laying (coin) ceremony. On November 6th started the Transatlantic crossing (crew-only/without cruise passengers) from France to Florida.

The ship's first Captain was Costas Nestoroudis, who in 2018 celebrated his 15th year of service with Celebrity Cruises.

Following the COVID crisis, in 2021 the ship restarted passenger shipping operations on June 26 (7-day Caribbean roundtrips from Port Everglades/Fort Lauderdale) under the command of Captain Kate McCue.

Celebrity Edge refurbishment 2023 review

The ship's first drydock was in 2023 (October 15-30) conducted at Chantier Naval de Marseille (shipyard in Marseille France ).

The drydocking project was for routine maintenance and class inspection, including complete hull works (survey, cleaning), systems and machinery overhauls, as well as hotel upkeep (including new carpeting and upholstery).

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

CELEBRITY XCEL KEEL LAYING CEREMONY MARKS NEW LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE FOR PREMIUM CRUISING

Construction begins on the fifth vessel in the brand’s award-winning Edge Series setting sail in fall 2025.

SAINT-NAZAIRE, FRANCE (JUNE 13, 2024) – The future of elevated travel at sea reached a major milestone today, as construction commenced for Celebrity Cruises’ next ship, Celebrity Xcel. The keel laying ceremony at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France celebrated the momentous occasion for the latest and most elevated vessel in Celebrity’s award-winning Edge Series ships. When she sets sail in the fall of 2025, Celebrity Xcel will connect guests to the breathtaking world around them like never before, furthering the innovative experiences coveted in her sister ships with several new yet-to-be-revealed offerings for an unparalleled premium vacation.

At the ceremony, Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, the parent company of Celebrity Cruises, Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises, and Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique lowered the first 739-ton steel block for the new ship in the dry dock. As part of the longstanding maritime tradition, executives from the cruise company and the shipyard placed newly minted coins on the first piece of steel to bestow good luck on the ship during both the construction process and future sailings. Nodding to the new caliber of excellence ushered by the brand’s Edge Series ships, the coin design commemorated another great innovation, NASA’s Saturn V rocket.

“Today, we not only mark the start of construction, but we are laying the foundation on which countless memories will be created,” said Jason Liberty, president and CEO, Royal Caribbean Group. “Each new ship also represents an opportunity to advance our journey to net zero, and with Xcel , we are building our first methanol capable ship, which helps advance our transition to the energy platform of the future.”

“We can’t wait to debut Celebrity Xcel and her unrivaled guest experiences, living up to her name in every way with surprises that confirm ‘Nothing Comes Close’ to a Celebrity vacation,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “We are grateful for the continued partnership of the Chantiers de l’Atlantique team for lending their craftsmanship to further elevate the innovative design and world-class features of our beloved Edge Series ships.”

“The Edge Series is the result of close collaboration between the Celebrity Cruises and Chantiers de l’Atlantique teams,” continued Laurent Castaing, General Manager of Chantiers de l’Atlantique. “We know and trust one another, and work in harmony to offer a unique and sustainable experience for passengers.”

Pushing the boundaries of leisure travel, Celebrity Xcel will advance Royal Caribbean Group’s decades-long commitment to sustaining the planet with the first tri-fuel capable engine. The new engine will provide unmatched fuel flexibility, with the ability to use three types of fuel, including methanol, a first for the company, and represents an important steppingstone on the company’s journey to Destination Net Zero, its vision for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Celebrity Xcel will make her debut in November 2025 in the Caribbean, sailing her inaugural season from Fort Lauderdale, on seven-night itineraries alternating between the Bahamas, Mexico and the Cayman Islands, Puerto Plata, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. The sailings are now open for booking.

Connecting Cabins on the Edge - Lots of Interesting Options

By vtcruising , July 11, 2018 in Celebrity Cruises

5,000+ Club

I was researching connecting cabins since my cabins on my Edge cruises are all connected to another cabin. The Edge has many connecting cabin options, including friends or family booking a suite with a non-suite connected to the suite and receiving access to the Retreat. Here is some of the info from the Edge FAQs and press releases:

"In addition to the new stateroom classes, a new feature available on Celebrity Edge makes it even easier for families and friends to get together and get away. Celebrity continues to offer adjoining staterooms that allow two rooms of the same category to open to each other for a larger vacation space: Two Edge Staterooms with Infinite Verandas become one, two inside staterooms become one.

But, as with everything else on Celebrity Edge , the brand took that idea one step further and created more than 174 connecting stateroom options. Of these 174 possible connections, many of them offer new and different combinations that create incredible new vacation spaces."

Suite Options:

"For instance, the connection of a new Iconic Suite paired with a Royal Suite creates a stateroom space for up to 10 guests, or a Sky Suite paired with an inside stateroom that more than comfortably accommodates up to six guests.

Celebrity will also extend the exclusive Suite Class amenities and services to guests in a non-suite stateroom when paired with a suite. Everyone in suite-paired accommodations has access to the Suite Class private dining, exclusive lounge, personal butler, and all other special Suite Class perks."

I'm not sure about the butler service in the non-suite cabin as the following was also in the literature:

"61. HALF OUR PARTY IS IN A SUITE, THE REST IS CONNECTED TO OUR NON-SUITE STATEROOM.

• Any non-suite connecting to a suite will receive access to The Retreat, but with no other suite amenities, including butler service.

62. WILL THEY ALSO HAVE TO PAY SUITE TIER GRATUITIES OR THE STANDARD RATE OF THEIR ACTUAL ROOM SINCE THEY ARE RECEIVING THESE EXTRA SERVICES?

• Only when staying in a Celebrity Family Suite or Sky Family Suite do guests have to pay for suite amenities

63. WILL THIS EXTENDED AMENITY OF SUITES TO CONNECTED NON-SUITE ROOMS BE AVAILABLE

FLEET WIDE OR ONLY ON EDGE?

• Only available on Edge.

64. THE WEB SITE SAYS FAMILY SUITES ARE AVAILABLE ON SELECT SAILINGS. HOW WILL WE KNOW WHICH SAILINGS?

The Celebrity Family Suites (2 pairs CS- C2) and Sky Family Suites (6 pairs SV + S1) are only available during Christmas and New Year’s Eve sailings. The brochure will identify that the rooms can convert to family suites.

To book, you must to call Reservations as these suites will be held back. Note if they do not sell we will recategorize to the original categories.

57. WILL THE CONNECTED STATEROOMS FEATURE THE SAME SETUP DESIGN OF ONE DOOR BETWEEN BOTH STATEROOMS, SIMILAR TO CELEBRITY SILHOUETTE AND CELEBRITY REFLECTION?

• There are 174 rooms that can be connected by a vestibule or a door.

• 134 connecting, and 40 vestibules."

Interestingly, most are true connecting cabins so will have a connecting door inside the cabins. 40 of them will have vestibules to connect the cabins. I have attached this cabin info sheet that reveals some of the connected cabins that have vestibules (such as S3's connected to an inside cabin by vestibule and the Sky Family Suite with connected aft S1 and SV's, though they mistakenly call them S2's, but there are no S2's next to SV's). That adds up to 24 of the 40 vestibule-connected cabins. There are several connecting cabins by doorways and the Celebrity Family Suite- a CS and a C2 are also connected by a door.

Shows the Sky Family Suites (on Thanksgiving and Christmas cruises), with vestibule connection (such as 11268 and 11270).

enhance

This shows the S3's with 2 with vestibules (such as 11166 and 11168) and 2 connected with inside doors (such as 11158 and 11160).

enhance

There are also some accessible connected cabins so that those with mobility issues can connect 2 cabins when sailing with family and friends.

I hope that the cabins with connecting doors will not be noisy. It seems hard to design a connecting door that keeps the neighbor's noise down when you don't want to be connected with them. :D

There are some nice options for traveling with family and friends on the Edge. I would think it would be a popular option to travel with friends in a suite and connecting non-suite to get suite benefits for all for less cost (and maybe switch it up for who gets the suite bedroom on the next cruise to make it fair). Hmmm, not a bad idea - I feel another cruise booking coming on.... ;)

Cool Cruiser

I, for one, am very excited about these options. I have a very goofy configuration on Millie next year to account for my kids and let me be in a Suite. I hope they expand them beyond the holidays. I want to spoil my kids... but not too much!

That concept of suite connections was one of the reasons we moved from the Sunset Veranda with connection to a corner suite to one of the middle Sunset Verandas with no connection. If a family needed the connecting cabin we might have been bumped...not sure X would do that but we avoided the issue.

Over school holidays, the numbers in Luminae and the Retreat will increase...not sure by how many...But this is a great concept for family cruising. DH wants to try a suite on EDGE class...might be great time to invite our dtr, son in law and grand baby. All can enjoy suite areas and easy for us to babysit..and for a few yrs they are not tied to school vacation schedules!

Trying to figure out which suite staterooms ( on side opposite the Magic Carpet.)..are the least costly that connect to a stateroom. Any suggestions?

That’s so exciting! What a great family vacation. Of course, we would go for an aft S1 and SV, preferably on 11 or 10. You would have the vestibule connection, but you may want the door connection. The nice thing about the vestibule with kids is that vestibule can be used for a little more space when the hallway door is closed (at least it was that way on the Reflection and Eclipse). In less than 5 months we should start getting some info coming back to make a better decision. :D

I agree that the connecting cabins is a great option but unsure what it will do to the Retreat population. I’m not going to worry about it - there are many places to spread in the Retreat and the whole ship will be a playground. :D

It sounds like you can get the suite Retreat year round if connected to a suite, just not butler and suite amenities in the non-suite cabin. Being able to go to the Retreat would be the main benefit that would be important to me. I guess the kids wouldn’t get a butler or Bulgari so wouldn’t be completely spoiled. 😃

"For instance, the connection of a new Iconic Suite paired with a Royal Suite creates a stateroom space for up to 10 guests, or a Sky Suite paired with an inside stateroom that more than comfortably accommodates up to six guests."

I think pairing the Iconic Suite with a Royal Suite is pure decadence! I would love to invite my entire family and do this someday!

They are continuing the vestibule set up for some connecting cabins. It makes you wonder why they did the vestibules on the first four S class ships and not the Reflection.

Looking to be adopted for sailing in Iconic purposes! LOL   bon voyage

If I win the lottery, we would love to adopt you and then you can plan all the family cruises!

PS: hope you like cold and snow!

Lottery is our only chance for the Iconic suite!

But I do like the idea of a Sunset Corner suite coupled with Sunset View Balc next door .going to be quite popular!

If adjoining cabins to suites get the Retreat access, will they also get Luminae? Does Luminae have a children's menu?

I read the wording very carefully and I would say yes to Luminae. The way it was worded was access to The Retreat and previously they described The Retreat as the Retreat sundeck, Retreat Lounge and Luminae at the Retreat. Just an educated guess, but hopefully all included.

I think Luminae has a children’s menu, but not absolutely sure. It doesn’t really matter there because you pretty much can get what you want (may need to ask ahead for some things). They aim to please! 😃

Ok, so I have a question...

We have cabins 7152 and 7154 booked. They are ‘connecting’ cabins, but show that the connection is near the balcony. Based upon what I’ve read about the location of the bed, then it appears that the door will be at the end of the bed right before the balcony. Am I reading this right??

Guess I’ll have to post pictures once we get there, huh??

imagejpeg

Well, guess i have no idea how to include a picture.....so I have ot have it as an attachment...rats!

Interesting - I hadn't thought that the location of the door symbol on the deck plan would be where it was in real life, but I think maybe you are right. It looks like the starboard side connecting doors may be by the balcony and the port side by the entry door. It doesn't make sense to me, but it's late and I'm tired... :D

The bed in 7154 would be opposite the connecting door - the cabins are a bit bigger so maybe there is plenty of room. It probably opens into 7152 where the door is in front of the couch, which will be narrower than the bed.

Be sure to post pictures when you sail so we can see what it looks like! We will have the new Edge Class cabin spreadsheet up and running by the first cruise. :D

Actually there are some vestibules on the Reflection, though they do not show up on the deck plans.

On deck 12 aft, the corner S1's and the adjacent S2's are located inside a vestibule that has a large door which when closed becomes a private area for the two suites. The door is unlocked by the key cards for those 2 suites. We have sailed in these S2's many times.

Yes, we had a huge vestibule on the Reflection shared with the cabin next door. We were in an S1 (1214) and a C1 (1216) was next to us. When the hallway door was closed, it is like having an additional room, especially if you had both cabins.

Hi, interesting concepts- I've been assigned what I think is a connecting cabin 10168 (Apex). What do people think? Will noise/general disturbance be an issue?? Thanks! X

IMG_2712.PNG

I believe from pics and videos I've seen, that they connect in that little hallway outside of the cabin.  Those inside cabins are square and from the diagrams/pics on Celebrity's website, look to actually seem roomier than the usual rectanglular shape inside.

I saw a similar configuration up one deck. It was an alcove connecting the suite and inside. I don’t think it would be different than other cabins next to each other. The doors are about 10 ft apart, I would guess. Yours would be the first door on left and the suite’s further down straight ahead. Congrats for getting a cabin on the Apex!!

Here is the link on Celebrity's website showing the 2 different types of inside cabins.

https://www.celebritycruises.com/edge/accommodations/inside/

Thanks for the reassurance guys!!! Sounds amazing! Feeling much better about it! ❤️

12 Best Cities in the Mountains to Explore

By Carl Pettit

Last updated: June 15th, 2024

Bergen, one of the best cities in the mountains

  • Find a Cruise

If you’re a lover of cities in the mountains, there’s no shortage of spectacular places to visit around the globe.

You could visit Vancouver, where the craggy North Shore Mountains have views toward the island-specked Strait of Juan de Fuca. Or take in Barcelona’s Mediterranean charm at the same time as exploring the Serra de Collserola coastal range.

Amazing cities from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Hobart in Tasmania and Granada, Spain all come with a mountainous backdrop and will captivate you with their diverse cultures, rugged terrain, and magnificent views.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Beautiful waterfront of Ushuaia, Argentina

If you like the idea of a backdrop of massive, snow-tipped peaks for your adventures, head to the southern reaches of the planet and visit Ushuaia .

Argentina’s southernmost city makes a great starting point for exploring the Tierra del Fuego National Park, known for its spectacular trekking through dramatic sub-Antarctic landscapes, with great opportunities for wildlife spotting. You could see condors and foxes, and from the shore, dolphins and whales.

View of the End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina

End of the World Train in Ushuaia, Argentina

One of the best things to do in Ushuaia is to ride the End of the World Train, or the Southern Fuegian Railway, a former convict and timber train. This historic railway winds through green forests and past tumbling waterfalls, offering you incredible views of the mountains.

Ushuaia, a jumping-off point for expeditions to Antarctica , offers plenty to see and do as well. In town, you can visit the Maritime Museum, a former prison, seafood restaurants, and some quirky shops.

The city is set on the edge of Beagle Channel, a breathtaking, fjord-like stretch of water with a rich marine ecology and a dramatic history of human endeavor and exploration that’s worth exploring.

Banff, Canada

Banff, one of the best cities in the mountains

Head to Banff , located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, and you might be surprised to find a Canadian mountain town that looks like it was plucked out of the British Isles due to its 19th-century Scottish baronial architectural influences.

Bergen, Norway

Bergen, one of the best cities in the mountains

Bergen is the quintessential coastal mountain city, squeezed between massive granite peaks and the North Sea , and, just to the west, picturesque fjords. You could easily spend several days experiencing all this city has to offer.

The first mountain stop here has got to be a hike or ride to the top of Mount Fløyen, where you can see Bergen’s expansive cityscape stretching out before you, boats buzzing back and forth on the water.

If you don’t want to trek up the mountainside, taking the funicular is one of the best things to do in Bergen as well. It’s a simple six to eight-minute trip to the top. After disembarking, you’ll find more walks and wide hiking trails through the woods as you tour around the summit.

Back in town, at sea level, you can call upon Bergenhus Fortress, which is just across the street from Bryggen, the medieval town center and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The fortress, which is still a working stronghold today, once guarded Bergen with its stone ramparts from the English and other would-be attackers. These days, Bergenhus is better known for hosting musical and cultural events.

Bryggen, on the other hand, is a harbor area that was thriving during the days of the Hanseatic League in the mid-1300s, the waterfront lined with colorful wooden buildings and a lively fish market. The dockside locale has been rebuilt many times over the centuries due to fires and the wooden warehouses today accommodate local artisans and independent shops.

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver, one of the best cities in the mountains

Vancouver does urban sophistication the right way, offering travelers the majesty of the mountains and wilderness coupled with the sublime beauty of the sea, with all the comforts of a vibrant city.

Burnaby Mountain Park, in the city proper, will also offer you glorious views and forested hiking trails. And of course, don’t miss out on experiencing Vancouver’s nature at Stanley Park, an urban park where you can take in the seawall, meander along pathways, relax on the pebbly shores, and visit the Vancouver Aquarium.

Venture just outside of the city to the Serra de Collserola mountain range, which pushes up against the city, for some great rambling trails, letting you stroll along shrubby and forested paths that offer panoramic views of Barcelona .

Another elevated point you ought to visit is Parc Tibidabo, a vintage amusement park, located on Mount Tibidabo. In some ways, the park is something of a historical relic, as it first opened its doors to the public in 1901.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, one of the best cities in the mountains

Rio de Janeiro is a study of contrasting topography, where rocky landscapes bring the jagged mountains almost down to the city’s golden sands.

This has to be one of the most beautiful mountain cities in the world. The ridges that lead to Sugar Loaf Mountain, jutting into the sky like a giant missile, along with Corcovado Mountain, where the iconic Brazilian landmark Christ the Redeemer statue is enthroned, are two vertiginous sites that shouldn’t be missed.

The mountains sprawling along Rio’s coastline are thick with vegetation. For even more greenery, visit the precipitous Tijuca National Forest, the world’s largest urban forest, which circumnavigates the slopes around these peaks, full of hiking trails and waterfalls.

For some urban fun, head to Copacabana, one of the most celebrated beaches in Brazil , as well as Ipanema, for people-watching, cool eateries, chic art galleries, and shopping.

Regardless of whether you’re relaxing along the sandy shores, climbing through forests, or riding a cable car up to Sugar Loaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro and its mountainous scenery will impress.

Juneau , the Alaskan capital, is a must-visit for anyone who loves the idea of cities in the mountains.

The city is bounded by mountains, which dominate the scenery. Mount Juneau will provide you with strenuous hikes, with fabulous views of the town below and the Gastineau Channel.

Reykjavik, one of the best cities in the mountains

View from Reykjavik, Iceland

Surrounded by volcanoes and glaciers, along with the impressive Mount Esja, which fills the skyline to the west, Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland , is a city defined by the forces of nature.

For a slice of raw and pure nature, the Bláfjöll, or Blue Mountains, east of Reykjavík , offer you some hauntingly beautiful trekking opportunities through stark-looking volcanic geography, which is great for seasoned and novice hikers alike.

To gain a bit of urban height, climbing to the top of the distinctively shaped tower of the Hallgrimskirkja church, designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, is one of the best things to do in Reykjavík for panoramic views across the city.

Couple relaxing in Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Blue Lagoon, Iceland

Reykjavik also has a playful arty scene, a fun rainbow-colored shopping street, and several geothermal spas nearby, including the Sky Lagoon and the Blue Lagoon, where you can soak in the steamy, mineral-rich water.

For snowy peaks and roaring waterfalls, head out to Thingvellir National Park, where you can walk between the two tectonic plates pulling Iceland apart, while being surrounded by mountains and mighty glaciers at the same time.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Beautiful waterfront of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Tenerife, in the Canary Islands , is dominated by Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak and one of the tallest volcanoes in the world. If you visit the island’s elegant capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a day trip to Teide is worth it for the far-reaching views.

The city itself is also overlooked from the north by the rugged peaks of the Anaga Mountains, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, covered in leafy subtropical laurel forests and in places, plunging straight into the Atlantic.

Beautiful landscape of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

After exploring the mountains of Tenerife , take in some of the sights in town, including the striking Auditorio de Tenerife, somewhat reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House, plus the Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África, full of fresh produce and seafood. This is a great spot for grazing at lunchtime.

If you want beaches next to the mountains, Tenerife won’t disappoint either. Some of Tenerife’s best beaches include Playa de las Teresitas and Playa de Benijo, each coming with their own particular vibe.

Another Tromsø highlight is the Polar Museum, which documents the history and exploration of this extreme-weather destination over the centuries, along with some of the brave souls who first ventured here.

In summer, head out of town to admire the mountain scenery and perhaps try your hand at dog sledding, possible at any time of year.

Granada, Spain

Granada, one of the best cities in the mountains

The city of Granada, situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada or “snowy mountains” in Southern Spain , is an exceptionally attractive mountain city worth visiting.

Why the journey is the destination when it comes to Alaska cruises

celebrity cruises on the edge

They say getting there is half the fun. Usually, I disagree. When I travel, I want to get to where I’m going as quickly as possible to make the most of my time there. However, sailing Celebrity Edge on its maiden Alaska voyage from Seattle, I was all about the journey.

Staring up at the snow-capped mountains through the ship’s floor-to-ceiling windows and watching for wildlife in the icy waters below, I was mesmerized by the famed Last Frontier. And I realized that on an Alaska cruise , the journey is a destination.

Here’s why and what travelers should know about cruising Alaska.

Why is Alaska a popular cruise destination?

Alaska is a bucket-list destination for many people. Some may wait their whole lives for the trip. While Alaska Airlines and other carriers fly throughout America’s largest state , it isn’t as easy to navigate as the Lower 48.

Cruises allow travelers to visit multiple destinations without taking separate flights, renting a car or moving from hotel to hotel. My Edge itinerary included stops in Ketchikan, which is surrounded by the lush Tongass National Forest ; the state capital of Juneau, which is only accessible by air or sea; and Skagway, home of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park . The ship also carefully navigated the stunning Endicott Arm fjord toward Dawes Glacier, a highlight of the trip.

The easy trip can also be more accessible for people with mobility issues and other disabilities. Like other cruise lines, Celebrity has a team dedicated to accessible cruising . Numerous guests on board my sailing used walkers, canes or wheelchairs. Plus, it’s just nice to be able to take in the dramatic coastlines from the comfort of a cozy cabin or lounge when it’s chilly outside.

Are cruises to Alaska worth it?

They can be. At last check, the lowest price on a seven-night Celebrity Edge Alaska Dawes Glacier sailing, roundtrip from Seattle, for the remainder of this summer is listed at $778 per person on the cruise line’s website, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. That does not include travel to or from Seattle nor any taxes or fees, which can balloon the bottom line on any cruise. Nor does it include promotional discounts, which are pretty much always available. After taxes and fees, that works to about $2,212 for two people or $1,106 per person.

The cheapest seven-night Southbound Glacier sailing on the Edge’s sister ship, Celebrity Summit , is much less at $249 per person, based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom. It’s worth noting the Southbound voyage goes from Seward, Alaska, to Vancouver, British Columbia, not a round trip. Also the Summit is not an Edge-class ship , The Celebrity Edge is the first Edge class ship to sail Alaska; it was also the first ship in Celebrity’s most recent series, which also includes the new Celebrity Ascent . Edge-class ships were designed to bring guests closer than ever to their destinations, with their signature Magic Carpet cantilevered platform that extends beyond the ship’s edge and other features that bring the outside in. After taxes and fees, the Summit sailing adds up to about $1,231 for two people or about $615 a person.

Both are cheaper than flying between cities and staying at hotels for a week in Alaska, but they're also cheaper than other popular vacations. For example, seven nights at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort , a value resort at Walt Disney World , costs $955 for the room alone, including taxes and a summer promo deal. Adding seven days of park tickets, without park hopping, and the total becomes $2,195 for two people or about $1,098 per person, excluding food.

Meanwhile, cruises include all onboard meals – except optional specialty dining and alcohol. There are also a boatload of included activities, like nature talks, tai chi classes, guided arts and crafts, trivia, games and childcare. There’s live music available through the day and nightly stage shows. I sampled a little bit of everything, but for me, the best part of the ship was the views.

Inside Ascent: 3 takeaways from Celebrity Cruises' new ship

Do you see wildlife on an Alaskan cruise?

Yes. I saw whale spouts three times from the ship, though the whales didn’t breach above water. I also saw a handful of harbor seals and a dozen eagles from the ship and from shore. Bald eagles are so common in Alaska that a tour bus driver jokingly called them bald seagulls. There are 30,000 bald eagles in the state, according to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game.

I kept an eye out for bears on an excursion to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. I didn’t see any walking along the paved, wheelchair-accessible Nugget Falls Trail, but I did spot all sorts of spring buds and the most beautiful moss.

The ship’s onboard naturalist gave us a heads-up on what to look for and taught us about various species in presentations in the ship’s theater. She also broadcasted live on the ship’s TV channel and inside speakers while traveling through the Endicott Arm. However, her voice wasn’t carried on outside speakers to avoid potentially disturbing wildlife.

What is the best month to go on a cruise to Alaska?

The Alaska cruise season runs from late April to early October, though dates vary by cruise line. Guests who sail early or late in the season may find lower rates than during the height of the summer, but they may miss out on warmer weather.

It was in the 40s to 50s most days of my May sailing, and it rained on our Juneau day. The onboard naturalist warned that there is no bad weather in Alaska, only poor clothing choices.

How much should I budget for an Alaskan cruise?

You should pad your budget with several hundred extra dollars for excursions and dining off-ship. Both can be pricey but enriching. My Mendenhall Glacier excursion was just under $130, including transportation and an off-site Gold Creek Salmon Bake , with all-you-can-eat fresh salmon cooked over a wood-burning fire.  I’ve never had better fried fish than the local halibut at The Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, and I will be dreaming of the sweet, plump red king crab at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in Juneau for years to come.  If you want freshly caught Alaska seafood, you’ll want to get it at port.

You may be able to spot whales from the cruise ship, but if you really want to go whale watching, salmon fishing, dog sledding, or get up close to glaciers, that’s generally going to require an excursion. Excursions offered through cruise lines tend to cost more than those booked independently, but booking through the cruise line can streamline payment and ensure that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion runs late.

One port you can enjoy on the cheap is Skagway. You can explore several exhibits and historic buildings on your own, as part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. However many visitors splurge on a scenic train ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway up to the Canadian border and back.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Yes and no. The views throughout Alaska are breathtaking, and being able to enjoy them from your cabin any time of day feels luxurious. I loved waking up to mountains, thick with trees, outside my window and scanning the waters for marinelife before bed.

Just over 80% of Celebrity Edge’s staterooms have a balcony. I had an Infinite Veranda , which is unique to Edge-class ships. Rather than a traditional balcony with a sliding glass door, Infinite Verandas incorporate what would be exterior balcony space into the interior of the cabin and have a window that slides halfway down the exterior wall with the push of a button. I loved how much bigger it made the cabin feel and appreciated the extra climate-controlled living space. It was still chilly during my early season sailing, so I rarely put the window down and think I would have enjoyed a non-balcony, oceanview room just as much.

Of course, if you book an inside cabin, you can still enjoy the scenery from public areas of any ship. The Celebrity Edge brings the outside in with tons of windows, including in the buffet restaurant, Oceanview Cafe, where I spotted my first whale spout. In the back of the ship, there’s a relaxing mixed-use space called Eden with three stories of windows that I found myself drawn to daily. The solarium, with its tall windows and rows of lounge chairs, also offered expansive views.

Do I need a passport for an Alaskan cruise?

Maybe. For a closed-loop cruise that starts and ends in the same U.S. port, like the one I was on, all you need is proof of citizenship.

“According to U.S. Customs & Border Protection, this includes an Enhanced Driver’s License, which is a state-issued driver’s license that provides proof of identity and U.S. citizenship; a government-issued birth certificate (issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the person was born) or passport; and if 16 or older, a government-issued driver’s license or picture ID denoting photo, name, and date of birth,” according to Celebrity.

Of course, not all Alaska cruises are closed-loop cruises. Some start or end in Vancouver, Canada. There are also cruises on several smaller U.S.-flagged cruise lines like Alaska Dream Cruises and Uncruise Adventures , which may not require passports depending on the itinerary.

Can you see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise?

It’s possible, but because daylight hours are so long during the summer in Alaska, the best chance to see them would be on a cruise late in the season.

I woke up in the middle of the night a few times to look for Northern Light. I didn’t see any, but I heard passengers on a previous sailing spotted them. Then again, so did people all across the country during the solar storm earlier this month.

Best Cruise Ships in the World The Gold List 2024

Celebrity Beyond Arrow

Cruise ships often get compared to floating hotels or resorts, but here’s one that feels like a floating Vegas show. Applause, please, for the glittering peacock made from Swarovski crystals and the Magic Carpet platform that shimmies up and down the ship, cantilevered over the water for some of the best seats in the house, while in the Martini Bar, a troupe of bartenders juggle shakers to the sound of “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Beyond is one of the largest ships in Celebrity’s Edge class, and all that space is used to maximize the drama. A whole corridor is filled with a glowing installation of bronze sculptures reflected in infinity mirrors; a favorite anchorage was Eden, a beautiful, biophiliac bubble for hiding away in, watching the ship’s wake through triple-height windows and dawdling in swivel chairs that resemble green carnations. As for the cast, there are some stellar performers: Kelly Hoppen designed most of the interiors; Daniel Boulud’s debut signature restaurant at sea, Le Voyage, has an impeccable, globe-trotting menu alighting on Brazilian moqueca and tamarind prawns. But top of the bill is Captain Kate McCue, the first American woman to captain a cruise ship. A captain hasn’t been this synonymous with their ship since the days of Merrill Stubing; follow her social media for a glimpse into the art of ship navigation. During our short, prelaunch cruise, we had an itinerary that involved looping round and round the Isle of Wight—a short trip, but one that was big on sheer spectacle. Delfin II. Amazon

Delfin II Arrow

The Amazon River has the opacity of chocolate milk and is almost deathlike in its stillness—which is wild when you consider how much life thrives there. It was on a nine-day journey through Peru with Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic that I learned this, as we spent five of those days exploring the jungle by boat. Our chariot: the Delfin II , a Relais & Châteaux vessel with 14 thoughtfully appointed staterooms.

Most days began with a crack-of-dawn skiff ride soundtracked by the squall of jewel-winged, dusky-headed parakeets. The photographers pulled out their football lenses and the birders gasped from behind their binoculars as naturalists pointed out an elegant snowy egret picking its way through a mudbank, a neotropic cormorant spreading its gothy black wings like a vampire, and the somber Jabiru stork, the largest flying bird in South America, standing like a dour English butler on a naked tree limb. Also flagged were capuchin monkeys, giant river otters, flamboyant bromeliads, and—after dark—scores of caimans and capybaras.

We spent one muggy morning in a Kukama village, where indigenous women wove raffia bowls and cooked catfish, and another morning paddling the river—an outing which culminated with a pod of pink river dolphins leaping from the water mere feet from our kayaks. (Even our seen-it-all naturalist, Sandro, clapped like a schoolgirl.)

This deep in the Amazon jungle, there were no other tourists. When we did see signs of human life, they were usually fishermen or park rangers. And because there was no Wi-Fi on the Delfin II and a near total blackout on cell reception, downtime was spent attending lectures on Amazonian ecology, sampling native fruits (how the aptly named ice cream bean hasn’t been pitched on Shark Tank yet, I’ll never know), and buddying up to the ship bar, where I made fast friends of fellow guests. (Expedition cruises always draw a fascinating lot; my cohort included a microbiologist, metaphysical transcendentalist, and one of the earliest Apple employees.)

The highlight of the trip, however, was hiking through the jungle with a local tracker who showed us a brown-throated three-toed sloth, Goliath bird-eating tarantula, junior anaconda, and a century-old strangler fig. When we finally emerged from the bush, we were treated to a spectacular tangerine-and-charcoal sunset punctured by bolts of lighting. It was surreal and intense, just like everything else in this untouched corner of the world. Eight-day sailings from $5,730 per person. —Ashlea Halpern

Ritz-Carlton Evrima Arrow

Ritz-Carlton’s first foray into cruising, the Evrima is a hotel-at-sea experience that might just be the antidote to all the big ship itineraries. Think ultra-small ship luxury (at half the capacity of the Seabourns and Regents) with plenty of scenery options to choose from—the European Mediterranean (routes from Turkey to the Canary Islands) from spring through fall, and the Caribbean (San Juan to St. Barts) in winter—and a younger crowd than most of the luxury cruise market; mostly culture lovers with a dearth of cruising experience who can't wait to get ashore to the Côte d’Azur village restaurants. The 624-foot ship is the first in a fleet of three emerging over the next few years, and it still feels spacious with 149 suites, two pools, a cigar humidor, six bars (the interior Living Room and top-floor Observation Lounge, The Bar, and bars located at the Marina Terrace, the Pool House, and Mistral), a beauty salon and spa deck, water-level marina terrace with water toys, and a fitness center. The 246 staff range from deck crew to your cabin’s personal concierge, all of whom are dubbed the ship’s Ladies and Gentlemen—but titles feel almost superfluous aboard Evrima , where everyone from the tender drivers to dining leads will pause to actually get to know you and recall your name and story (and even your drink order) to make the entire experience feel organic and warm. It’s almost like you’re spending the night in someone’s home, which just so happens to be a 624-foot mega-yacht. And the Evrima itinerary has plenty of free time and overnight ports of call in its sailings, so you can head ashore for a day, or even an entire evening late into the night—gallivanting, dining, and imbibing with the new friends you'll no doubt meet onboard. Seven-night sailings from $5,800 per person. —Shannon McMahon

Oceania Marina Arrow

Is there any Marina passenger who doesn’t wish—even for a second—to confine himself to his stateroom on debarkation day? Perhaps only the smarty pants who booked their next cruise before this one ends. Otherwise, how can an epicurean cruiser (that’s Marina ’s crowd) not pine for another shot at the new wine list starring 80 highly coveted, hard-to-snag labels, including swoon-worthy Super Tuscans? You’ll long for one more brag-worthy chance to sip The Mascot, a label from Harlan family pedigree (think cult fave Harlan Estate); the Polo Grill’s deft sommelier knows exactly which prime steak pairs best. Despite eight compelling complimentary restaurants (Red Ginger’s signature lobster pad thai is still a must-devour), Marina vibes far more than great meals. Work up a sweat storm playing pickleball on deck 16 or braving core conditioning in the gym. Melt into a marine detox wrap (I love the juniper and lemon scent) at Aquamar Spa + Vitality Center, then sink into the spa terrace’s bubbling hot tub. Get down and dirty in the artist loft by painting a Venetian mask and playing Impressionist. In the hands-on culinary center, learn to cure a fish or preserve a lemon. Come May 2024, Marina debuts a splashy redo. Fall in love again with revamped avocado toast—bravo to the taco-spiced shrimp topping—in the new wellness-driven Aquamar kitchen. Where you lie your head hardly matters. An entry 291-square-foot stateroom starring a four-pillow, soft-sheet bed feels mighty spacious and sports Bulgari shampoo. That said, the top-to-bottom penthouse suites’ glam reno is beyond covetable, from the expanded bath to a boatload of enviable perks. Ten-day sailings from $1,999 per person. —Janice Wald Henderson

Trollfjord Arrow

Who better to guide you through Norway’s most remote reaches—including the Svalbard archipelago, the northernmost inhabited islands on the planet—than a Norwegian cruise company that knows the area’s every crag and fjord? Hurtigruten is an Oslo-based line whose ships have traversed these waters since 1893, ferrying freight, mail, and passengers to the communities along the rugged coast. In 2023, to celebrate its 130th anniversary, the company’s flagship, the newly refurbished, 500-passenger MS Trollfjord (named for a fjord in the Vesterålen archipelago) began sailing two hybrids of its original 34-port Norwegian Coastal Express, calling at several of the towns and villages on the original route. From September through April, the North Cape Express (a 13-day, 16-port itinerary) sails from Oslo to the North Cape and then south to Bergen. In the summertime, the Svalbard Express’s eight-day journey begins in Bergen and progresses north, with extended port calls and excursions in seven towns before entering the Arctic Circle and pulling into Longyearbyen, a mining town on Spitsbergen, Svalbard’s main island. On both routes Trollfjord offers its (mostly European) passengers an uncommon way to explore the region, with uniquely Nordic cultural touches to connect them to the country. There’s a pre-boarding spread of Norwegian fare in the ship’s departure lounge, and Trollfjord ’s three restaurants prioritize Scandinavian cuisine (salmon, reindeer, and lingonberries, oh my!) and the food culture of the indigenous Sámi people. The ship’s 277 staterooms and 12 suites (with walk-in closets, corner bathtubs and floor-to-ceiling windows) offer a cozy retreat from the sometimes-harsh weather. And typically Nordic diversions such as aquavit tastings, oceanview saunas and polar plunges leave you in no doubt about where you are and who you’re sailing with. 10-day sailings from $3,082 per person. —Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon

Cruise Ship Regent Seven Seas Navigator

Seven Seas Navigator Arrow

Imagine the most luxurious hotel you’ve ever stayed in. That’s precisely what stepping onboard the Regent Seven Seas Cruises Navigator feels like. And while the opulence and grandeur shine through every square inch of space, it’s worth mentioning that the staff are what make the experience memorable, remembering your name, preferences, likes, and dislikes from the second you step afoot the eight-deck vessel.

The 248 ultraluxe all-suite accommodations feel like your home away from home—despite their capacious interiors—and your personalized steward makes sure of that with thoughtful touches from the moment you check in. Thanks to a revamp in 2019, the ship feels pristine with a new library—complete with a faux fireplace—and sleek state-of-the-art furnishings (including the cruise line’s bespoke mattresses and bed linens) in each of the rooms. However, what makes the Navigator stand out from its counterparts is its intimate size, as it’s the smallest in Regent’s fleet. Everything onboard feels just an arm’s reach away, and you’ll quickly bond with fellow passengers after spending the day together on one of the complimentary shore excursions, such as tours by local guides, cooking classes, and other intimate adventures.

During my Mediterranean voyage, days were spent immersing ourselves in new cities, whereas nights began with a freshly shaken ice-cold martini followed by an exuberant dinner, with a stop in the Seven Seas Lounge for whatever was on tap that night, ranging from cabaret to karaoke. At the end of the journey, I left wanting more and with a suitcase full of clean clothes, thanks to one of the many attentive touches onboard: the included laundry service. 10-night sailings from $3,360 per person. —Rachel Dube

Seabourn Ovation Arrow

“We are not the Rat Pack,” quips Andrew Pedder, the witty Yorkshire-born captain of Seabourn Ovation. He's referring to himself and the other senior officers, for any guests who may have wandered into their impromptu panel session instead of the musical show taking place later that evening. The Q&A—which covers everything from the prettiest ports to the number of Champagne bottles typically consumed during a seven-day voyage—is part of a last-minute program of activities arranged for an unexpected sea day when it’s too windy to dock in the South of France. This is mid-October, on one of the ship’s jaunts around the Mediterranean for the season, and no one seems to mind the change of plan (although when we do explore, all the islands we visit—Menorca, Corsica, Elba—are blissfully tourist-free). It simply means more time for spa treatments, soaks in the outdoor hot tubs, and afternoon tea in the observation bar. Even then, it only feels like there are 60 passengers onboard, rather than 600. The restaurants are excellent, from Sushi, where you can sit at the counter watching the Japanese chefs at work, to poolside Earth & Ocean for Tandoori-style rotisserie chicken and Madras-style white bean cassoulet. Suites are spacious, each one with a balcony. West End–standard entertainment includes a magician and a chart-topping classical singer. But what makes this ultraluxe ship really memorable is the relaxed, on-point service by staff who remember your name and coffee order, or even a familiar face from a sailing five years ago. Seven-day sailings from $2,649 per person. —Emma Love

The Restaurant Silver Endeavour

Silver Endeavour Arrow

Silversea is defined by its far-flung itineraries and exceptional onboard service (think Moët Champagne as you take in an iceberg calving in Antarctica). But the 220-passenger Silver Endeavour, new to the fleet and already a classic, raises every bar. Rooms start at a spacious 356 square feet and have luxury perks like pillow menus and a personalized bar, making them the best in all of Silversea’s array of ships. As far as food goes, premium Ars Italica Osetra caviar is complimentary and around-the-clock, though the Dover sole paired with a label from the rare wine menu at La Dame would have you believing you were in Paris. And the signature Otium spa celebrates pampering as much as it does wellness—don’t skip on the oxygen-boosting Golden Radiance facial. You may find yourself at any given hour glimpsing ice walls through the Drake Passage and remembering that the best part about this ship is the awe-inspiring places it dares to take you. 10-day sailings from $13,150. —Janice Wald Henderson

Scarlet Lady Arrow

Although new to the cruise industry, Virgin Voyages has already begun to set itself apart from its predecessors. When first stepping on the Scarlet Lady, cruisers are met with a rousing, upbeat staff that serve as gurus around the ship and are experts on everything from beauty to juicing. While the Scarlet Lady takes you on a familiar route around the Caribbean, the on-shore excursions available are what make this sail memorable. Take a leap of faith on daring outings such as the Waterfalls of Damajagua in Puerto Plata, where guests make their way down seven of the 27 natural slides and waterfalls. After the exhilarating experience, travelers can sit down with locals and come together over Dominican staples such as pollo guisado, tostones, and mangú. You can always get local delicacies while docked, but while onboard, you must snag a reservation at the Test Kitchen. It’s an experimental dining experience where the menu always evolves. You go in only seeing a small card with ingredients listed for the night’s meal, but everything else is up to the imagination. One might find cucumbers puréed and frozen into ice cream as dessert, or beets formed and prepared like steak. While en route to the next port, the hard reset one does at the Redemption Spa leaves your body feeling anew; it’s impossible to come back from vacation feeling the same as when you departed. On any Virgin Voyages ship, you’ll love the indulgent atmosphere, whether you’re catering to your sweet tooth by narrowing down your favorite gelato of the day, grabbing a drink at one of the five bars that stake claim to having the largest tequila supply on the seven seas, or finally getting that tattoo you’ve been thinking about for ages after visiting the ship’s tattoo parlor, Squid Ink. Seven-day sailings from $2,100 per person. —Paris Wilson

cruise ship restaurant

Queen Mary 2 Arrow

Six days sailing from England to New York across the vast Atlantic had the potential to bore me to stupefaction, but it turned out I had nothing to fear. “The ship is the destination,” said an entertainment director for Queen Mary 2 , who oversees a program that makes this cruise liner the undisputed hub of creative and intellectual stimulation on the high seas. Where else can you attend the annual Literature Festival At Sea, meeting top fiction and nonfiction authors like the late PJ O’Rourke, Bernadine Evaristo, and Louis de Bernières? And where else can you visit a planetarium, watch a Royal Shakespeare theater production, or hear guest speakers discuss artwork investments and the history of airport drug mules?

In between spa massages and table tennis rallies, I nourished my mind in the mahogany library before nourishing my body at the Princess Grill and Queens Grill restaurants, scarfing dishes like croquette of suckling pig, paired with excellent vintages and followed by mango panna cotta. On the final stretch of the journey, as dolphins leapt over the horizon and the Statue of Liberty loomed into view, my heart sank a little—New York City awaited, yet I didn’t want to disembark. That’s quite an achievement. Seven-day sailings from $1,389 per person. —Noo Saro-Wiwa

World Navigator Arrow

During my first few hours aboard the Atlas Ocean Voyages World Navigator, I felt a bit like I had inadvertently crashed a family reunion: Seemingly everyone else aboard this Arctic expedition had just sailed to Antarctica on the Navigator six months before, so several crew members and guests spent much of embarkation day hugging and catching up. With a maximum occupancy of 196, it’s already an intimate ship, but the fact that the relatively young brand, which debuted in 2019, could develop such an impressive number of repeat travelers in such a short spell speaks volumes. Many told me they were drawn to Atlas because of its eco-friendly bona fides (the new-build ship makes use of hybrid engines from Rolls-Royce designed to leave minimal impact), but the creature comforts on board certainly help. While the star attraction of such an expedition voyage is what lies beyond the decks—access to remote Antarctic fjords that larger vessels can’t dream of traversing, or spotting polar bears loping along pearly glaciers in the Arctic—I made the most of my time in between Zodiac expeditions. The multi-jet shower in my stateroom was sublime after damp and rigorous treks, the heated massage beds in the only L’Occitane Spa at sea are a dream, and the Arctic summer’s 24 hours of sunshine made the Dome observation deck a prime perch to cozy up with a book at any time of day or night. There was neither internet nor cell phone connectivity during my entire eight-day journey sailing thanks to the remote latitudes (though Atlas guests now have access to full Starlink satellite coverage), which meant this was the longest I’d been offline since the 1990s—and yet somehow, drifting through the surreal landscape in this cosseting bubble, I didn’t miss scrolling or chatting with the outside world one bit. Seven-night sailings from $4,749 per person. —Sarah Khan

Westerdam Arrow

A passenger who is well below senior age dances the robot to classic rock, to R&B, to country music, and to disco hits as talented singers and a live band perform most nights in the Rolling Stone Lounge, on Holland America Line’s Westerdam . His mechanical movements are a source of amusement and encouragement; if he can take over the dance floor, so can we with our own moves. The 1,916-passenger Westerdam is beloved as a traditional cruise ship, with its smaller-than-mega-ship size, deep blue hull, wraparound outdoor promenade deck, and details such as fresh flowers all around, celebrating the 150-year-old cruise line’s Dutch roots. Tradition does not mean staid. There’s rock and roll. There’s a trendy top-of-ship pickleball court.

On an Alaska cruise, my husband and I start our days with a jolt of caffeine via the baristas at Explorations Central, the ship’s cushy, contemporary, forward-facing observation lounge, before heading off on adventures such as joining other passengers in synchronized paddling a large canoe to see the ancient yet diminishing ice of Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier. Back on the ship, we indulge in excellent burgers, topped with Gouda and applewood-smoked bacon and served in fast-food wrapping from a stand at the covered Lido pool. We enjoy sustainable Alaska seafood—grilled salmon, fennel-crusted halibut, fried cod—in between cocktails made with local gin, served on real glacial ice. From the veranda of our classic aft cabin, mesmerizing views of the ship’s wake, seemingly endless forest, and a distant, blue-tinged glacier clear our brain. We’re ready for more of the dancing man. Seven-day sailings from $379 per person. —Fran Golden

Insane moment Celebrity Edge cruise ship gets dangerously close to Hawaii coast

Hawaiian state officials issued a warning to cruise ship operators that they will be "closely monitoring" the coast on Friday after a Celebrity Edge ship appeared to be dangerously close to Kauai's Na Pali a month ago.

Photos and videos show the massive ship in shallow waters near the coast, where divers, kayakers and swimmers roam, according to officials.

Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) chair Dawn Chang sent the companies a letter and announced that authorities were launching an investigation. However, the state probe failed to produce evidence that the ship violated rules to stay 3,000 feet from shore, per HawaiiNewsNow.

  • Pearl Harbor base 'has water contaminated with forever chemicals'
  • Carnival's budget-friendly cruise exposed as expert details hidden costs

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) launched an investigation last month after social media posts appeared to show the ship coming too close to shore.

"DOCARE determined there is insufficient evidence that supports probable cause or that there is clear and convincing evidence to pursue any criminal or civil action at this time," DLNR said in a news release .

Upon the ships return to the island, officers interviewed the captain who said he had total control of the ship and was "always in waters of not less than 30 meters depth," though he was "unclear" how far the ship was from shore.

Witnesses on Kauai also could not say with certainty that the ship had sailed too close to shore.

"Some witnesses did not wish to be involved in the investigation and others only had second-or-third-hand information or repeated what they saw on social media," the release said.

"While DOCARE's investigation could not conclude that the cruise ship, carrying more than 50 passengers, was traveling within 3,000 feet of the shoreline, community concerns and photographs appear to show the ship was indeed much closer to shore," DLNR chair Dawn Chang said in a letter addressed to Celebrity and other cruise lines on Friday.

He added: "This incident created a tremendous amount of angst in the community, as this area is highly protected and valued for its natural beauty and cultural significance.

"We are putting the industry on notice that the DLNR and the community will be closely monitoring activity not only along the Napali Coast, but throughout our state ocean waters."

Royal Caribbean Group, Celebrity's parent company, told USA Today:"We have robust policies in place to maintain compliance with local regulations around the world."

It added:"We will continue to assess our policies and take necessary steps to ensure we continue to operate in the most responsible manner possible."

The Hawaii Tourism Authority previously confirmed that a second cruise ship was also under investigation, but did not disclose the vessel or line.
