Nate Bargatze: The Be Funny Tour

Hailed this year as “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up,” by The Atlantic Magazine and a “Rising Star,” by CBS Morning , 2021 Grammy nominated comedian, podcaster, and Old Hickory, Tennessee native Nate Bargatze is selling out shows across the world.  Bargatze’s comedy is both clean and relatable, evident in his ten appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also appeared on Conan four times, was a recurring guest on @midnight, and had his own Comedy Central Presents in 2011. Off-screen, Bargatze was part of Jimmy Fallon’s Clean-Cut Comedy Tour, and has performed live shows for the troops in Iraq and Kuwait five times.  In addition to touring the country as a headliner, Nate toured arenas with Chris Rock on his 2017 Total Blackout Tour. He regularly performs at Bonnaroo, SXSW, Oddball Comedy Festival, Sasquatch, Clusterfest, and the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival, where he’s received critical acclaim multiple years in a row.

Birmingham is becoming a comedy destination

In case you haven’t noticed, Birmingham has become a hotbed for comedy shows. For example, earlier this month Jerry Seinfeld—co-creator and star of the hit 90’s sitcom Seinfeld—performed a sold-out show at the BJCC Concert Hall.

1. leanne morgan — just getting started.

Stand-up comic Leanne Morgan discovered her passion for comedy after having her first child. Morgan began cracking jokes while selling jewelry at house parties to make a little extra cash—soon, the jewelry company was asking her to perform at sales rallies.

After performing in comedy clubs and prestigious comedy festivals, Leanne’s fame skyrocketed when a clip went viral in 2018.

In April, Morgan produced her own Netflix special, titled Leanne Morgan: I’m Every Woman . Now, she’s bringing her jokes about life, marriage and motherhood to cities around the nation on her second comedy tour, “Just Getting Started”.

4. Birmingham Comedy Festival

The BJCC is kicking off 2024 with the Birmingham Comedy Festival, featuring five hilarious and well-known comedians:

• Sommore —also known as the “Diva of Contemporary Comedy”—was the first female host of BET’s ComicView and starred in The Queens of Comedy.
• Lavell Crawford —who you might recognize from his role as Huell Babineux in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul —has performed standup comedy since the 1990s, when he frequently performed on BET’s ComicView.
• Bruce Bruce is an actor and comedian known for his wit, improv and infectious personality!
• Bill Bellamy is a comedian, actor and cousin to Shaquille O’Neal!
• Tony T. Roberts has appeared on HBO’s  Def Comedy Jam ,  BET’s ComicView ,  It’s Showtime at the Apollo and other shows, all while performing standup comedy around the world.

5. Paula Poundstone

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Paula Poundstone began her stand-up comedy career at open-mic nights at comedy clubs until she was spotted by Robin Williams, who encouraged her to try her act in Los Angeles. In addition to standup, she’s starred in several HBO specials, is a regular panelist on NPR’s  Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! and hosts her own weekly podcast, Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone.

As a standup comic, Poundstone is famous for her ability to improvise her act thanks to interactions from the audience. Some say she’s never performed the same act twice!

6. Bert Kreischer

Bert Kreischer—AKA “The Machine”—is coming to Birmingham next year during his “Tops Off World Tour”. Known for his propensity for performing shirtless and his outlandish stories from his partying days, Bert Kreischer is one comedian you don’t want to miss!

7. Nate Bargatze

Hailed as “The Nicest Man in Stand-Up,” Nate Bargatze is a stand-up comedian known for his clean and relatable comedy—perfect for all age groups! Nate has several Netflix specials—”The Tennessee Kid”, “Greatest Average American” and “The Stand-ups.” His latest special, “Hello, World,” can be found on Amazon Prime Video.

Nate is currently traveling the world on his new “Be Funny” tour—and bringing the laughs to Birmingham on May 11!

Tickets to see Nate Bargatze will be available on Friday, October 27.

Attention all comedy fans! Paul Smith is back and better than ever with his latest tour show, "Pablo". Get ready to experience the jaw-aching, laugh out loud comedy that only Smith can deliver. This is Paul Smith's biggest and funniest tour show yet, and it promises to have you rolling around in laughter with every joke. The show features a mix of his trademark audience interaction and hilarious true stories from his everyday life. You can expect hysterics from start to finish, and you won't want to miss a minute.

Our performance times are usually confirmed closer to the show. We’ll post the times as soon as we can get them, so check back about a week before for updates.

All bags are searched prior to entry; therefore, to help speed things up and ensure your safety, we'd prefer if you didn't bring a bag to our venue.

Seated: Under 14 year olds MUST be accompanied by an adult aged 18yrs + with a valid ticket, into the venue. (i.e. 14yrs and over can come into the building on their own with a valid ticket).

Standing: Under 14 year olds are not permitted on a standing floor. 14 and 15 year olds are only permitted on a standing floor when accompanied by an adult aged 18yrs +.

I went to see Romesh Ranganathan at Utilita Arena Birmingham and laughed so much my face hurt

O ne of the most likeable - and sarcastic - men in comedy had the sold-out Utilita Arena in stitches as Romesh Ranganathan brought his Hustle tour to Birmingham. You know Romesh.

If you don't know the name, you'd immediately recognise him. He would make a joke about his eye at this point.

You will have seen him on TV as he's everywhere these days. The Weakest Link, A League of Their Own, even his own travel show. Even he said when he sees himself in the mirror he wants to turn the channel over.

That sort of self-depreciating humour provides an insight into Romesh's set at the Utilita on Thursday evening, which was basically a list of complaints and irritations about life from the comic's unique perspective.

It was a fantastic evening from a comedian who is right up there with the best. I didn't stop laughing during the two-hour set. My face hurt by the end of it.

He let us into his mind as he confessed the things he would like to say in social situations he really can't be bothered with or at home - be it to his partner Lisa, friends or strangers he's forced to engage and make small talk with - but never would.

There were some non-PG moments and darkly comic turns - he was the first to admit that as he apologised to the Birmingham crowd while chuckling to himself mischievously on a number of ocassions - which can't be repeated here. But he's Romesh, everyone loves him so he gets away with it. His almost embarrassed reaction to shocking his audience with his edgy material made it all the funnier.

But these were digressions. His set was mostly about the annoyances, frustrations and mundanities of life we can all relate to, and social situations we're forced to endure because we can't say we actually don't want to do them. Things like making small talk with your partner's friends' husbands or being forced into a couple's evening.

Even meeting up with friends is a chore for Romesh. So much so he says he doesn't want to make any more. Ever. This is just a flavour of Romesh's rants. 'Life coaches' telling us we need to get up at 5am and work out and Laurence Fox also got it in the neck.

He's been doing this a long time now. In fact, Romesh is probably seen more these days as a TV presenter than a comedian. His comfort in the spotlight after years of fame - he'd probably baulk at the word - was obvious and he was at ease on stage doing what he told the Birmingham crowd he loved.

A natural. I can't recall laughing so much at another comedy gig. If you get the chance to go and see him, take it.

Romesh is back in Birmingham on Friday evening for his second sold-out show in as many days before his tour moves on to Nottingham, Hull, Leeds and Manchester.

Pete Davidson walks off stage during comedy show over ‘relentless heckling’

OMAHA, Neb. ( WOWT /Gray News) - Comedian Pete Davidson reportedly ended one of his recent standup shows early after he was subjected to an unruly audience.

According to multiple reports, the former “Saturday Night Live” cast member was performing at Steelhouse Omaha on Friday night as part of his Prehab Tour when the “relentless heckling” occurred.

WOWT reports that patrons at the show said some of the audience members became loud and disruptive, particularly later into Davidson’s act before he abruptly walked off the stage.

Several people commented about the performance on social media, with most comments pointed toward the unruly audience members for interrupting the show.

“It’s just absolutely absurd. You’re ruining it for the whole show,” The Independent quoted a fan.

On Reddit , another fan shared their experience that evening while supporting Davidson’s action.

“Good on Pete for disciplining the petulant audience that showed up like an attention-seeking 3-year-old demanding their presence noticed while the adults talk,” they shared. “Truly disappointing.”

According to Live Nation , Davidson is scheduled to perform next in Canada at the Fallsview Casino on June 8.

Michael Palin announces new book tour

Volume 4 of his diaries out this autumn

Michael Palin has announced a new tour to promote the next volume of his diaries, entitled There And Back.

Volume four of his memoirs covers the decade from 1999 to 2009, in which he hosts four travel series as well as  a number of documentaries from art to the last day of the First World War. 

He also watches his family grow as he enters his 60s at a time of turmoil in the world; The Twin Towers fall, bombs blast London, banks collapse and whole economies teeter on the brink.

Publishers Weidenfeld & Nicolson say: ‘His diary reflects his constant struggle against routine and repetition, and his irresistible and often nerve-shredding attraction to new challenges. Some work, some don't, but by the end of this volume he's reached the retirement age of 65. And he's planning a new journey.’

Announcing the tour, Palin said of the tour: ‘I’ll bring to life the fourth collection of my diaries and the first to be released for 10 years. Lots of fun as I go through the Noughties, and some dark times too. I constantly surprise myself with the sheer amount I took on.’

The former Python will embark on a 13-date tour to promote the book, starting on September 15 in Norwich and culminating at London’s Cadogan Hall a month later.

MAKING A BOOKING

Do i have to book in advance.

We always recommend booking in advance, as many of our shows sell out nearer to the day. You can do this online, or by calling our Box Office (opening hours can be found here ).

How do I pay / reserve? Can I pay on the door?

We always recommend booking in advance. You can book online or over the phone by making full payment using a credit/debit card.

For some shows, as long as they are not sold out in advance, we may still have a limited number of spaces available on the door. These are first come, first served. Please note, tickets will be more expensive on the door.

Paying on the door to join another party that has pre-booked: We will do our best to accommodate you, but we can not guarantee you’ll get a seat with your pals if you’ve left it to the last minute.

Where are my tickets?

We are a ticketless venue, it's less hassle for you, and saves a few trees. Once you have booked you will receive an email confirmation of your booking. This is for your own records, there's no need to print it, but do read it through and make a note of the booking reference number (beginning with GL). Upon arriving at the club, we just need the name you booked under, this will gain you entry. If you are the organiser of the party, please ensure all members of the group have the booking reference number and party name to give at the door.

You can login to the  MyGlee section of the website at any time, to take view or amend any current bookings you have with us.

You can also visit MyGlee to resend your booking confirmation if you can't find it.

How many tickets can i book?

Glee is a great night out, whether you are a solo comedy fan, a couple on the tiles or a group of 200. The capacity is the limit! If we’ve got the seats available, they’re yours for the taking. Some tour shows have restrictions on booking group size. Please contact the Box Office with any queries. 

Can I add extra tickets to my booking?

As long as we still have ticket availability for the show you require, and there are no restrictions on group size, then yes. Get in touch and we’ll take you through it, or go ahead and book those online, by logging in and adding to your original booking. As with all bookings, we recommend doing this as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

I need to book a group, do I have to pay for everyone?

Not unless you're feeling generous! We take lots of group bookings, and we want you all to be able to sit together where possible, and have things sorted before you visit.

You can book your own ticket, and then link to another booking after you've checked out, or contact the Box Office to link your bookings. This needs to be done at least two hours before the show doors open. 

Some events have limits on the group booking size. If your group is over the size limit, please contact the Box Office to check availability.

Some people in my party aren’t coming now. Can we get their ticket money converted to drinks or food?

Sorry no. If you have any drop-outs, please get in touch with the box office on 0871 472 0400 / [email protected] and we’ll see what we can do for you.

Can I have a discount?

Currently, the only discounts we offer are on some group, birthday, student and stag/hen bookings. Please contact the Box Office for further information. Alternatively, head to our Groups page and fill out the enquiry form.

Can we pick our seats?

For all allocated seating shows, we write a unique seating-plan each night, so we allocate your seats on the day of the show. All tickets in the same booking will be seated together. We don't know in advance exactly where you will be sat, but if you are a large group (10+), you are likely to be seated in the middle / towards the back of the auditorium.

If you have a seating request for an allocated seating show (for instance 'Not on the front row!'), please give us a call on 0871 472 0400 or email [email protected] so we can note it down for you. We can't 100% guarantee your request will be granted, but we will do our very best for you!

Some tour shows including Music, Cabaret & Burlesque, Spoken Word / Talks and some Comedy Tour Shows may be unreserved seating with no tables, or standing gigs. Please check the ‘More Info’ section next to all show listings to find out.

What's your age policy - do I need ID?

Our venue is obliged by local licensing to enforce a 'Challenge 25' policy, which means anyone who looks under 25 may be asked for ID to gain entry . If when asked you fail to produce legally acceptable ID you may be refused entry without refund.

Please check the individual event for the age restrictions. 

Under 16s must carry photo ID and be accompanied by an adult with a ticket to the show at all times .

Accepted forms of ID:

- Passport - Photo driving licence (provisional licences are accepted) - Card with official PASS hologram

If you cannot provide valid when requested you may be refused entry. Refunds will not be issued for incorrectly booked tickets .

Do I need my student ID?

If you have booked a student ticket type - we absolutely need to see your student ID! Accepted forms of student ID are a validated ID on the UNIDAYS, Student Beans or Totum app or an official student card that has a photo and expiry date.

If you can't provide one of the above forms of ID, you will be charged the difference between the student price and the full price ticket on the door. This is not refundable should you find your card or ID at some point later.

food & drink

Is food served at the shows.

Please check the individual event listing to see if food is available. For some shows, you can pre-order your food & drinks ahead of your visit by placing orders through MY GLEE at least 2 hours before show doors open. Alternatively, you may be able to order food from the bar, or our table service system, on the night.

For certain music gigs, and any shows in the Studio Room, no food will be available. 

The Main Room and Studio Room also offer bar snacks including crisps, fresh popcorn and locally-made pork scratchings.

Can we pre-order drinks?

Certainly! You can do this yourself online through MY GLEE once your booking is in. Please note we can’t take pre-orders for drinks in our Studio Room, or for unallocated/standing shows.

Can we get a bar tab?

Sure. We know big groups can be difficult to buy drinks for, so we are happy to set up a pre-paid bar tab for you via invoice ahead of your visit. You can also set up a bar tab on the night of the show with a credit/debit card, with optional limits. To do this, simply ask for the bar manager who will create and manage the tab for you.

GETTING IN / ACCESSIBILITY

I have a medical condition/disability that affects my visit. what should i do.

We will do our best to help and accommodate your needs in a respectful and if required, confidential manner.

What happens if i’m running late?

Arriving during the entry time window printed on your confirmation is a condition of booking. If you arrive after this time, entry is at the discretion of the management who will do all they can to accommodate you.

If you don't make it before the show begins you will be asked to wait until the first possible opportunity of getting you in without disturbing the show.

If a member of your party knows they will be late in advance, it's always useful for our box office to know this, so please give us a call.

What’s the layout?

If you are seeing a show in our Main Room , this auditorium is usually set out with tables in front of each row of seats. These rows extend backwards from the stage in a theatre style. If you're attending an allocated seating show, your group will be allocated seats and tables together which are yours for the evening. Our staff will give you your table numbers upon arrival.

Some Main Room tour shows including Music, Cabaret & Burlesque, Spoken Word / Talks and some Comedy Tour Shows may be unreserved seating with no tables, or standing gigs. Please check the ‘More Info’ section next to all show listings to find out. If you are attending a show in our Studio Room , seating is always unreserved. W e suggest you arrive early if you want to be sat in a specific place or with a group of friends. Although there will be enough seats for the amount of attendees, they are taken on a first-come basis.

Safety & Security - what do we do?

T he ongoing safety of our customers, staff and performers is of absolute paramount importance. So if you’re visiting one of our venues, please take a moment to read the below information.

Security & CCTV Our management and security teams regularly review procedure and protocol with all staff. As with every live event, there are lots of things that go on behind the scenes, so please be patient if things take a little longer than you’re used to. All of our venues are monitored by CCTV at all times. 

Travel light

Please arrive for the event in good time as we carry out security searches on entry. We have no cloakroom facilities and request you do not bring large bags. 

Contraband Parties found bringing in food and drink without prior arrangement, or any dangerous or illegal weapons / substances onto our premises will be denied entry without refund, and the party's details passed on to the authorities where relevant.

Speak to us If at any time you see or hear anything untoward, please speak to a member of our team – we’re here to help.

Barry's had 'One too many', why can't he come in?

Join us, be merry, have a great time, but we are a licensed venue - which means we cannot legally permit entry, or serve alcohol, to anyone who has clearly stayed in the pub too long after work.

Customers who arrive already intoxicated will not be permitted entry and no refund offered. Any member of your party found in possession of or found using any prohibited drugs will be asked to leave. We reserve the right to conduct bag and body searches and also to pass any relevant information to police.

during your visit

How long do the shows last.

Our shows are live and generally unscripted, so we can't always predict with certainty when they will end. However, as a general guide our Comedy Carousel shows finish at approximately 10.00-10.30pm. Our Friday Night Comedy shows finish at approximately 10.00-10.30pm. Our Saturday Night Comedy shows finish at approximately 9.30-10.00pm. Our comedy tour shows tend to finish between 9.30-10.30pm. Our music shows have a curfew of 11pm, and generally finish around 10 - 10.30pm. For more specific details on specific touring shows, please contact the Box Office.

Is there a disco after the show?

Subject to availability, on busy Friday and Saturday nights we have a late bar and music, but sadly no dance-floor.

is there a dress code?

No, wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Some clothes are advised. Some people like to dress up, others go for casual attire. All styles are welcome at The Glee.

If you want to wear fancy dress , go for it, we don't have a problem with you looking a bit silly. However, you will be asked to remove anything that gets in the way of other customers' enjoyment of the show (eg, massive hats, flashing lights, noisy items).

do you have a cloakroom?

Can i use my phone can i take photos or recordings.

No. We want you and everyone in the room to be able to enjoy the show, undisturbed. We've all scowled at someone in the cinema who's phone goes off at a crucial moment, it's the same for a live show.

We require all attendees to set their phones to silent.

We can't tell if customers are recording the show unless phones are turned off and put away, it's illegal to film a show, it is piracy.

Every time you check your phone or go to text, the phone screen lights up like a christmas tree and so does your face! This is distracting to the acts and those around and behind you.

This only applies during the show, you have plenty of time before, during intervals, and after the show to check & use your phone. If you need to use your phone whilst the show is on, please simply leave the auditorium to do so.

Behaviour in The Glee Clubs

All customers regardless of age, gender or perceived status are expected to treat the venue, staff, acts and fellow customers with due respect and good manners. This extends to talking during the show, which we consider to be rude and disrespectful to nearby customers, as well as the acts performing. Any customers found to be persistently talking, heckling, or demonstrating aggressive or intimidating behaviour will be ejected without refund. 

I have a complaint. What next?

If you have a complaint about food, drink or anything that is disrupting your experience, please query this with the staff on the night. If we know what's happening at the time, we will do all we can to quickly rectify this for you, and allow you to continue enjoying the evening.

If you would like to make a formal complaint after the event, or wish to send us some feedback, we welcome you to do so. Please contact our Box Office Manager at [email protected] with as much detail as possible. All complaints must be submitted in writing and cannot be processed via telephone.

They will make sure this complaint is passed on to the managers involved. We respond in every instance in due course, once the matter has been investigated.

All of our venues are central and have good access to accommodation and transport.

The Line-up has changed, what’s happened?

Whilst we make every effort to keep line-ups as listed, line-ups may be subject to change on our mixed bill weekend comedy shows. Some acts are unable to play the venue after all, for reasons outside of our control. When this happens, we always replace them as soon as is possible, with another top-notch act.

If you are planning to see a specific act on a mixed bill show, please bear in mind that line-ups are subject to change, and refunds cannot be issued.

Is it funny?

Yes. Very! We book the best acts working on the UK & International circuit. These are fully-paid professionals, who know their comedy.

Why do you charge a booking fee?

The booking fee applies to every ticket. The transparency of our pricing is as important to us as it is to our customers, so we have a small and upfront booking fee that covers the cost to our business. This in turn allows us to staff our box office for all of your enquiries and ticket bookings, allows customers to book online, and to transfer tickets between shows.

Can i get a refund if i can’t make it?

All bookings are non-refundable. Please read our full terms & conditions here .

Bookings for Comedy Carousel, Friday Night Comedy & Saturday Night Comedy shows are transferrable, using MYGLEE . Transfers are subject to a £2 per ticket fee and are transferrable up to 1pm on the day of the show.

Please note that bookings to any other shows are not transferable or refundable once made.

I’m organising a charity event, can you donate?

We are more than happy to donate pairs of tickets for use in charitable events. However, we will need proof that this is going to the named charity.
