2. Derek first rolled the Road King onto a lift. Next, he removed the seat, battery, left saddlebag, and left side cover. The battery was completely removed because the control module mounts to three holes on the left side of the battery box just above the fuse box.

3. Next, Derek prepared to install the module by connecting the pre-wired, 10-place plug. Note the rubber grommets for vibration isolation.

4. This is the control module installed and all the parts back in place. It looks like it belongs there.

5. Derek then routed the control cable to the induction module. It’s not mentioned in the instructions, but Derek says this task is easier with the gas tank lifted, so he removed the rear hold down screw.

6. The control cable (red arrow) runs along the frame under the gas tank, then down between the cylinders to the throttle. Note that Derek placed a plastic hammer under the tank to hold it out of the way.

7. The air cleaner assembly was also removed.

8. This is the cable bracket (red arrow) on the induction module.

9. It’s close quarters between the cylinders to mount the cable in its bracket and install the retaining Jesus clip. Derek was patient and used an extra long set of needle nose pliers.

10. Derek got the retainer clip (red arrow) on with no hassle. We hope you never have to mess with it again.

11. Next, Derek removed the stock right brake lever/master cylinder assembly and the handlebar controls.

12. The electrical connectors for the handlebar controls are located in the headlight nacelle. Derek had previously removed the nacelle to install other parts. You’ll have to at least remove the headlight and open the nacelle to access the plugs. The black connectors are for the right side and the grey connectors are for the left.

13. Derek finished installing the new right side handlebar control. Note the new Set/Res switch. The +/- symbols refer to the accelerate/decelerate functions of the same switch. To finish up, Derek installed the new left side handlebar controls and re-installed the seat, battery, saddlebag, and cover. He also adjusted the cruise cable using the Cable Lash Initialization procedure in the shop Service Manual.

14. Here’s the left side handlebar control with the new Cruise On/Off switch. Awesome! Now we’re ready to put on some miles without ravaging our wrist.

For iron-butt rides, we like a gel cushion to relieve the pain in our butt and cruise control to ease the cramp in our throttle arm. Getting soft in our advanced age? Probably. Nevertheless, we believe the only ache you should feel while riding is the heartache when you have to stop.

Harley-Davidson makes it easy to add cruise control to its 2002 and later Road Kings, since each one is pre-wired and pre-configured for it. Their Cruise Control Kit for FLHR/S Models (Part Number 77198-07) costs $339.95 and comes complete with new hand controls, module, and all hardware. The operating instructions are already included in the Touring Models Owner’s Manual.

To install this kit on a 2007 Road King Custom, we headed over to Mancuso’s Harley-Davidson Crossroads in Houston, TX, where our friend and mechanic Derek Rogers handled the complete project. Installation is straightforward but tedious due to the need to remove several parts and to fit a very tight retainer clip, which the shop mechanics affectionately call “the Jesus clip,” claiming it’s the hardest clip on the bike.

This article covers the complete install but focuses on the cruise control components. For example, replacing handlebar controls is standard and entirely explained in the instructions.

After Derek finished, we headed to the nearest highway for a test run. Operation is simple-it’s just like the controls in your four-wheel cage. The On/Off switch is mounted on the left handlebar. The Set/Resume/Accelerate/Decelerate switch is on the right. Turn on the system, cruise up to the desired speed, and press Set. Enjoy the ride. The system will automatically disengage if either brake is applied, if the throttle is rolled hard, or if the clutch is disengaged. However, when needed, the rider can gently increase speed up to 10 mph over the Set point without disengaging the control, then coast back to the Set point. Now we can wave or signal with either hand.

Road King Classic - cruise control off and on

cruise control 2008 road king

  • Add to quote

Cruise control on my bike works sporadically. I narrowed it to the connector near the neck of the frame where 2 wire leads plug in. The connector seems to be spliced into the cruise control cabling. Here is where i think the problem lies. It seems when i wash the bike the water gets in the connector and grounds the engagement switch (the one on the right hand control). The system always turns on (red light on the left hand control lights up) when i engage the on/off switch (so the power to the unit is good). but the engagement mechanism does not always work. I narrowed it the connector by the neck because while riding i jiggled the connector (near the neck) and the system engaged. I have done the following..... 1. used electrical contact cleaner 2. made sure the leads do not touch each other at the base of the connector where the wires are barely separated. I tried dielectric grease before i used contact cleaner, but the grease created a short by touching both leads at the bottom of the connector. Any similar experiences or suggestions... by the way the contact cleaner and making sure the leads are slightly separated seems to have cured the problem (at least until the next wash)

Any way you can disassemble and solder the connections, then seal them from water?

cruise control 2008 road king

Also readjust the throttle linkage per the manual.

cruise control 2008 road king

If have seen where if the brake lever has a lot of wear it will trip the switch from vibration. Thorns

cruise control 2008 road king

The connector you're referring to is called the roll-off switch and it is part of the idle cable. If you really want to isolate the problem, try disconecting those 2 connections all together and take a test ride to see if the cruise engages properly. Be extra cautious though, because you will not be able to disengage the CC by closing the throttle. If the cruise engages properly and consistently, then the problem is with that switch or the connector terminals. If it is still acting strange, then it could be the set/resume switch in the right control, or the front brake switch as previously mentioned. I agree with bbrowncods that you should make sure you have the cables adjusted correctly and have enough freeplay in the throttle/idle cables. I changed bars and left my cables too tight and had a miserable time trying to keep the cruise engaged. If I had my hand on the grip at all it would trigger the roll-off switch and I would lose cruise.

cruise control 2008 road king

My roll off switch is disconnected, never been a problem since that isn't how I disengage the cruise anyhow. Mine was behaving exactly as you describe yours before I disconnnected the switch....

flyin B. what is the purpose of those connectors... if i read you correctly, i could then disconnect (tape off) the leads and everything should work ok. Now the part that is of concern is when you mention the cruise can get stuck. Can you re-explain that part..thanks dennis

dirty old man you have your switch disconnected... so how do you turn off your cruise (witht the on/off switch only?). Not that i always use the cruise, but i do not like when things on the bike are working off and on....thanks for your comments... i have read this web site for a couple of years and never posted, but have sure learned a lot from the posts of others.

thanks D.O.M disconnected the roll off leads....took the bike on a ride - tested cruise everything worked perfect..you just saved me a trip to the H.D. thanks....

The cruise control module has four fail-safes for disengaging. 1) the roll-off sensor in the throttle cable. 2) it is wired to the brake light relay, so tapping either brake enough to turn on the brake light will disengage the cruise; 3) it is wired to the tach signal and a sudden increase in RPM will immediately disengage the cruise (so you can pull in the clutch and as soon as your engine starts to rev, it shuts off; and 4) the on-off switch. From what I have heard from other riders, the throttle cable is the most problematic, as it is the one mechanical part and tends to wear out or be over sensitive to cable tension. Disconnecting the roll-off cable sensor still leaves you three other methods to cancel the cruise, so you should be fine, but ultimately, it's your call.

Once again the V-Twin Forum and its many members saved the day. I have a RK Classic 2003. I had the same issue as indicated in another post, that being; The cruise control would work sporadically. At first the roll off was very sensitive, to the point i could not keep my hand on the throttle or it would turn off the Cruise Control (CC), as time progressed the CC would operate sporadically, more often than not. However on my most recent ride to Sturgis it did not work at all. In Sturgis I picked up a “wrist saver” (I think that’s what it is called) for the ride back. I am planning another trip in the next week and decided to check out what was wrong with the CC. My first stop was VTF. After a search of “Cruise Control” I found many threads, after reading a few I found one that indicated the same symptoms I had. I decided to find the “roll off switch” first, which after some searching is located on the right side of the bike in front of the fuel tank against main frame. I disconnected the two wires from the switch and using a multi meter checked to see if the was continuity (resistance) across the switch. I noticed that the terminals were loose and had a reasonable amount of movement as if one of the terminals were broken. The first time I checked the continuity it was open, as a wiggled the terminals I checked again for continuity and it was made. I check the Forum again (above) and realized that for the CC to operate the switch should be open, so with the wires disconnected from the “roll off switch” the CC should operate. I took the bike for a test ride, and the CC worked. I tried the CC multiple times. So for others with a similar issue, disconnect the two wires from the “roll off switch”, which can be done with no tools, and test the system by riding the bike on a road, above 30mph. It is personal preference if you replace the “roll off switch”, I choose not to. If I want to disengage the CC I use the brake, clutch or the on/off switch. With 15 minutes of searching the forum, and 20 minutes in the garage (it only took that long because I did not know where the “roll off switch” was located) it save me potentially hundreds of dollars. Thanks to those who participated above. PhilRKC

If you do the cruise control test it will give you a code that means the roll off switch is not working also..... NOTE: Some speedometer calibrators like the Dakota digital will knock out the cruise control on the 08 fly by wire bikes. Here is how to pull the cruise control dropout codes and what they mean. They tell you why the cruise control disengaged. The module stores the last 8 dropout codes starting with the most recent dropout. To invoke the readout: Engine OFF, cruise switch OFF Push cruise set/resume switch to SET and HOLD it there while switching to IGNITION (do NOT start engine) RELEASE the set/resume switch and watch the cruise enabled lamp....it will flash out 3 digits encoded as a series of pulses in the following pattern >>> the first digit is string of 1/4 second flashes, then a one second pause; then the second digit is string of 1/4 second flashes, then a one second pause; then the third digit is string of 1/4 second flashes and it stops.....write down the number of flashes in each of the three segments and you will get a three digit code if you want to verify the flashes you just saw, then push the switch to RESUME and it will repeat the three digit code that you just read..... to get the next three digit code that is stored, push the switch to SET and three more digits will be pulsed out in the same format as above.....continue advancing the codes by toggling to the SET (or verify them using RESUME) there are 8 codes stored and once the buffer is empty, the cruise engaged lamp stays on solid.........if you want to repeat all 8 again, then toggle the switch to SET to exit the readout mode switch the ignition to OFF You now have 8 three-digit codes written on your arm....their meaning is: 111 No Codes, memory clear 112 Throttle roll off 113 Cruise switch turned off 122 frt or rear brake applied 211 Coast interval longer than 6 seconds (S/C button) 212 speed dropped below 30 mph while s/c button held 213 speed below 26 mph or above 90 mph 221 speed drops more than 15 mph below speed set point 222 speed decrease exceeds 20 mph per second 223 vehicle speed sensor input 231 rpm exceeds 5000 232 tach signal lost 242 high rate of engine rpm change (e.g., hit ice or slipping tire) 341 low voltage internal failure if code 311, 312, 313, 321, 323, 331, 332, 333, 342, 343, 351, 352, 353, 361, 362, 363, 371, 423, 432, 777

Roadking Cruise Control I have an 03 Roadking Classic with the same problem. Reading the posts, now I will have a better idea of how to fix the problem. Mine has been sporatic for a couple of years and getting worse. It would cut out even on a slightly bumpy road and the code did indicate a roll off switch. I could not pull a code when the CC would not engage. Thank you for the insite into this problem. I do not know why I did not check here first......

Identification

Transmission, wheels & tires, technical specifications, instrumentation, paint & finish, convenience, user reviews, king of the road.

one of the best cruisers I've owned.

style, look, classic, ride and heritage Harley Davidson style.

the only problem is the head turbulence from the bad design of the windshield.

I am very happy with my King.

Rating breakdown

After riding metrics for a number of years, I decided to get the Harley that I always wanted. Boy am I glad I did. This bike rides smoother than any other that I have ridden, it handles well and has plenty of power. The classic styling with the wide whitewall tires, laced wheels and lots of chrome ... screams Harley-Davidson. It is such a beautiful bike to look at. In the four months and 2,000 miles so far, I have not had any problems whatsoever.

King of the Road

Love the bike, wish I had waited on the new frame on the 2009 model but the bike has been a lot of fun. Went on a short 400 mile round trip to the New River Gorge Bridge on bridge day had a oil filter come loose but the bike is comfortable, rides smooth, the heated seat is nice along with the heated ... grips. The look is just what the name says CLASSIC. No offense to the fairing people but the bike is too pretty to cover up with a piece of fiberglass.

Feel like a kid again.....

The Harley-Davidson Road King Classic is a wonderful investment if you are looking for style, comfort, and fun. With the adjustable air ride suspention you can ride over almost any rough road with hardly any discomfort. Wherever we go, our bike is constantly turning heads with the look of the bike. ... Its got the classic look of what you remember the Harley looking like. It rides like a cadillac down the road. We can ride on it for hours with very little discomfort.

Its a great time anywhere you go. With the six speed transmission and the 96 CI motor, you have plenty of power to keep up with any car, truck, or other motorcycle on the highway. At highway speeds, there is hardley any noise. You feel as though you are ideling down the highway. Plus with the ABS and the cruise control, you can ride in total comfort and take full advantage of the feeling on this bike. No motor changes need to be made with this bike, you have everything you need!

2008 Harley-Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic

– 2008 Harley-Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic

The FLHRC Road King Classic is pure nostalgia. Laced wheels carry wide-whitewall tires. Tooled leather covers the seat and hard-shell saddlebags. Touring features include a large detachable windshield, auxiliary passing lights, and standard cruise control.

NEW ON TOURING MODELS FOR 2008

New Brembo Brakes with available Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): New high-performance Brembo brakes and a factory-installed ABS option are available on all 2008 Touring models. Incorporating the latest in braking technology, the new Harley-Davidson Brembo brakes offer consistent braking and stopping power under all operating conditions. Besides improved brake performance and feel, the Touring motorcycles retain their distinctive Harley-Davidson style. This world class braking system comes to the Touring line with proven capability directly from the VRSC line of performance custom motorcycles. The all-new ABS feature is designed to help the rider maintain control during emergency stopping situations, especially those that happen in less-than-ideal conditions. The components of the Harley-Davidson ABS have been designed and packaged to be virtually invisible, preserving the uncluttered styling of the area around the wheels. Unlike many motorcycle ABS, Harley-Davidson ABS is a manual, independent system, meaning the rider maintains control of how much of each brake is applied..

Larger Fuel Tank: Fuel capacity of all Touring models is increased by 20 percent, from five to six gallons. Combined with the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission, the larger tank gives Touring models more range than ever before. The new tank also features new console styling with a new fuel range indicator, and also enabled the seat to be reshaped for more comfort.

Electronic Throttle Control: A new Electronic Throttle Control replaces mechanical cables on all Touring models. All wiring from the throttle-grip sensor is routed through the handlebars. The ETC enables the easy upgrade to a new cruise control system, and provides a clean custom look in the handlebar area.

Factory-Option Cruise Control: Available for all models that do not come equipped with cruise control as standard equipment, this new cruise control is offered at a lower price than the previous accessory cruise control system.

Isolated Drive System: Located in the rear sprocket, the Isolated Drive System improves ride quality under accelerations, shifting and cruising while reducing noise and vibration to the rider.

Adjustable Fairing-Mounted Wind Deflectors: The Ultra Classic Electra Glide model has standard adjustable fairing-mounted wind deflectors that improve ride comfort by allowing the rider to direct oncoming wind flow. The wind deflectors can be added to Electra Glide Standard, Street Glide and Electric Glide Classic models through Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories.

105th Anniversary Editions: A limited-edition, serialized 105th Anniversary FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide, FLHRC Road King Classic, FLTR Road Glide, and FLHX Street Glide will be available in 2008.

FLHRC Road King Classic features:

2008 HARLEY-DAVIDSON TOURING MODELS A SWEET WAY TO RIDE Six-Gallon Fuel Tank Extends Range, New Brake System with Available ABS Offered

MILWAUKEE (July 9, 2007) – An all new Braking System with available ABS for all 2008 Harley-Davidson Touring models is among a large list of new features that make this the most luxurious line of long-distance motorcycles ever offered by the Motor Company. All Touring models will also be equipped with a new six-gallon fuel tank, an Isolated Drive System on the rear sprocket, and electronic throttle control. A new, economical electronic cruise control system will be offered as a factory-installed option for each Touring model not equipped with it as standard.

Developed through millions of miles of testing and the input of long-distance riders, the seven models in the 2008 Harley-Davidson Touring line utilize a heavy-duty chassis powered by the rubber-mounted 1584cc Twin Cam 96 V-Twin engine with Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection (ESPFI), mated to the 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. It’s a powertrain that offers outstanding roll-on throttle performance for passing, as well as relaxed cruising in top gear and improved gas mileage.

For even more performance, the Twin Cam 96 can be upgraded to 103 cubic inches of displacement with the bolt-on Screamin’ Eagle 103 Big Bore kit from Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Accessories. All models also feature air-adjustable rear shocks that accommodate variable passenger and luggage loads for long-haul comfort.

For 2008, Harley-Davidson Touring family includes two Road King models that combine outstanding comfort with classic styling, the exciting Road Glide with a frame-mounted fairing, and four Electra Glide models with the traditional Harley-Davidson “batwing” fairing. Cruise Control module

  • Add to quote

I have an 09 Road King classic. The cruise control failed the other day followed by a check engine light. I ran the on board diagnostic and the code indicated the cruise control module was the problem. I'd like to repair this myself, but new to Harleys. Heres my questions. 1. If after checking the connection for corrosion or other issues, whats my chances that replacing this module will repair my problem? 2. What are some other things that could have failed and what should I check? 3. Where is the dog gone module and what does it look like? I appreciate any input. Thanks so much. ocho.

Thanks for the info, however, I just found out that the CCM was incorperated into the ECM after 08. The instructions you sent werer for a throttle with a cable. Mine has the "by wire" system on it. Any other suggestions?

Take it to the dealer and bring some lube.

cruise control 2008 road king

Check the fuses with a tester not your eyeball , if all good then remove the Maxi-fuse for about 5 minutes like was stated . Make sure the right switch housing is snug up against the master cylinder clamp , the front brake switch affects cruise operation . If everything checks out then your bike will have to go to the dealer for repairs . The cruise gets tested and setup on the service dept. Digital Tech computer , nothing user serviceable for the cruise system . Cruise diagnostics is only covered in the H-D electrical diagnostics manual .

Thanks , Ill try that. If these items dont fix the problem, does it require a new ECM or reprogamming? That cant be cheap. Ill let yall know what happens. Thanks again.

If your bike ends up at the dealer the service tech will perform diagnostics with the shop computer , if the diagnostics show that the cruise part of the ECM is unserviceable the ECM would need to be replaced and programmed to the bike . The shop computer has a program called "Pinpoint Diagnostics" that is extremely accurate at diagnosing specific electrical problems . If the problem isn't the cruise itself the program will identify the area , it may only be an ECM programming error or something else simple .

If not, that's when you'll need that lube.
