Passport DC presented by Events DC is a month-long festival in May that pays tribute to Washington, DC's thriving international diplomatic community and diverse culture. As part of International Cultural Awareness month, the first two Saturdays in May are devoted to embassy open houses. Consider this your chance to stroll Embassy Row – a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue NW that runs through Dupont Circle and Upper Northwest – and visit some of the more than 170 embassies and cultural institutions based in the nation's capital.

Thanks to this only-in-DC experience, you can take advantage of two chances to step inside a foreign embassy with the  Around the World Embassy Tour  (May 4, 2024) and the EU Open House (May 11, 2024). Read on to learn about these events plus all of Passport DC's other ongoing experiences, including International City Food Festival (May 3-4, 2024), Flower Mart (May 3-4, 2024), and Fiesta Asia! (June 1, 2024).

On May 3-4, the second annual International City Food Festival will include three days of celebrations complementing the first weekend of Passport DC, making culinary diplomacy accessible — with free admission — to all ages through global food and drink. The festival will offer a timely launch point to travel the globe to understand and honor other cultures, all in the heart of DC.

Also during Passport DC’s first weekend, the Washington National Cathedral hosts its annual Flower Mart , a two-day event that allows visitors to shop for plants and gifts, eat fun festival food, enjoy children’s activities, ride a historic carousel and take in the beauty of the International Floral Exhibit.

Later in May, you can embrace Asian Heritage Month with a day jam-packed with culture, from the performing arts to culinary delights. On June 1 (postponed from May 18 due to inclement weather), the annual Fiesta Asia! takes over Pennsylvania Avenue between 3rd and 6th streets NW with exciting performances, interactive displays, flea markets and food stalls.

Both of Passport DC’s embassy open house experiences are FREE!

Like so much of Washington, DC , this unique event is free to the public. If this pumps you up as much as it does us, then express gratitude to your hosts. Surprise them by learning to say "thank you" in their native tongue before you move to the next embassy.

This is the only opportunity of its kind, when embassies are open to the public.

Visitors in Turkish embassy during Passport DC - Free international experiences in Washington, DC

What's even more exciting than a great deal? Answer: The opportunity to celebrate a once-in-a-lifetime experience, which Washington, DC delivers on with each and every visit. There's no city in the U.S. that can offer embassy open houses, let alone give you access to so many different embassies. So celebrate the ends of the globe during Passport DC, and the fact that DC helped make it happen.

If you come hungry, you're in luck.

We don't encourage you to expect your day of embassy walkthroughs to double as a bona fide food tour, but many embassies offer up international treats for visitors. Savor as much of the global spread as you can, and then make a full meal out of it with  DC's exciting dining scene .

You can sip on everything from international coffee to spirits.

Embassy tours to check out during Passport DC 2023

passport dc embassy tour 2023

Dozens of countries from Albania to Zambia will host open houses Saturday during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour, one of those “only in Washington” events you’ll tell friends and relatives about. How often do you get invited into an embassy to explore its art collection, sample traditional cuisine, and watch music and dance performances for free? Here’s a guide to planning for a successful day of globe-trotting without leaving D.C.

What to know about the Around the World Embassy Tour

Because the event is popular, lines are common, especially at some of the bigger, better-known embassies and cultural centers. It pays to plan ahead: Pick a particular neighborhood to explore — maybe around Scott or Sheridan circles, or the upper reaches of Massachusetts Avenue — and have an idea of a few embassies you’d like to visit. That way, if you get tired of waiting outside one embassy, you can head to another, preferably smaller, destination nearby. Also, as veteran Around the World-ers will tell you, the embassies clustered around International Drive and International Court in Van Ness are closer together and tend to get less crowded than those along Embassy Row.

For serious explorers, this is a good weekend to skip brunch. Participating embassies and cultural centers are open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and lines get longer as the day goes on. Get an early start if you want to see the most locations.

Another tip: Bring cash. While many embassies offer free samples of food and drink, some have charged in the past. Others have marketplaces with art or textiles for sale. (Related: Grab the first free tote bag you see, because you’ll pick up plenty of tchotchkes throughout the day.)

This event is part of the month-long Passport DC program , and souvenir passports are available from booths near the Dupont Circle and Van Ness Metro stations. Visitors can collect stamps as they visit embassies and cultural centers, though there’s no reward for filling the book.

Embassies to put on your to-do list

While events vary from year to year and embassy to embassy, here are a few activities we’re interested in checking out this year. The Around the World Embassy Tour’s mobile website has a handy map and details about what’s happening throughout the day.

Experience a “Junkanoo” with live music, costumed dancers, and free food and drink at the Embassy of the Bahamas .

Enjoy food and refreshments while watching music and dance performances at the Embassy of Cameroon .

Peruse an exhibition of Ivorian jewelry and textiles, watch music and dance performances, and sample food and drink at the Embassy of the Ivory Coast .

Listen to live music while participating in a rum tasting and posing in a photo booth at the Jamaican Embassy .

Celebrate the Japanese Children’s Day holiday at the Japan Information and Culture Center , with traditional games, haiku writing and a model train exhibit.

Tour the Embassy of Kazakhstan ’s museum, visit a yurt and try traditional foods.

Check out an exhibit of talavera pottery from the state of Puebla, listen to live music, watch dance performances, play children’s games, and sample snacks and refreshments at the Mexican Cultural Institute .

Take a beginner Norwegian language class and sample waffles at the Embassy of Norway .

Watch drummers, dancers and cooking demonstrations or try on traditional costumes at the Sri Lankan Embassy .

View Muay Thai kickboxing, learn about traditional Thai massage and find out how to mix the perfect Thai fruit cocktail at the Embassy of Thailand .

Explore an exhibit of works by Ukrainian artists, listen to music and sample traditional cuisine at Ukraine House .

Throughout the month of May, which is Washington, DC’s International Cultural Awareness Month, people in the District have a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate the rich diversity of cultures represented in the city.

“Events DC’s Around the World Embassy Tour and Passport DC attract nearly 27,000 attendees each year and allow the diplomatic community to highlight the very best of their home countries,” said Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates. “Washington, DC is a world-class destination for many reasons. With such a high concentration of embassies, locals and tourists have an unparalleled opportunity to experience a wide range of local, national and international traditions from around the globe. I love that we can benefit from each other for inspiration and creativity in so many ways—art, cuisine, fashion, dance, music and so much more.”

Along with the Around the World Embassy Tour, Events DC’s Passport DC program features additional cultural experiences throughout May that showcase the city’s diversity:

May 5 and 6 – All Hallows Guild presents Flower Mart at the National Cathedral, where attendees can enjoy beautiful flower displays representing different countries. Themed this year, “A New Beginning,” Flower Mart is the largest annual fundraiser for the cathedral’s gardens and grounds.

May 6 – Embassies from multiple non-European Union countries will host open houses, giving visitors the chance to learn about different customs and heritages through food, fashion, arts and music.

May 13 – European Union embassies offer visitors an authentic European experience.

May 20 – Fiesta Asia! invites people to get up close with Asian practices, dances and food in a street fair festival on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Events DC is proud to encourage people to explore and learn about the diverse diplomatic communities in Washington, DC. With more than 175 embassies, Washington, DC has the second highest number of embassies in any city in the world.

Washington, DC truly is a global city that offers something for everyone.

Passport DC is a month-long event in May with more than 100 international events and activities that educate visitors and residents of the Washington, D.C., area about our global community. Every first Saturday of the month is the signature event known as the Around the World Embassy Tour. With D.C. home to more embassies than any other city in the world, usually over 40 embassies (in 2013 it was 44), representing six continents, invite the public with a rare behind-the-scenes look into their stately mansions and exclusive compounds to experience their country’s food, art, dance, and music. Out of the 44, I crossed over the border into 10 countries in one day: Indonesia, Haiti, Belize, Barbados, Brazil, Côte d’Ivoire, South Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. (Yes, when you are in an embassy, you are officially on that country’s soil). So I chowed down on the Kyrgyz Republic’s national dish known as plov (lamb and rice), drank Haitian coffee and Barbancourt rum, sampled rendang and sambal spices from Indonesia, sipped Turkish coffee, savored barbecue chicken with beans and rice and panty-ripper cocktails from Belize... and heard the sounds of “Gangnam Style” blaring outside the South Korean Embassy, saw samba and capoeira performances at the Brazilian Ambassador’s residence. And there was hand-shaking and mingling with ambassadors and diplomats.... Talk about a full day of cultural immersion!
