Sunday's final round of 2024 rbc heritage suspended due to darkness after lengthy weather delay, share this article.

The last thing you want to hear is the horn on the golf course, but that’s precisely what fans at the 2024 RBC Heritage heard on Sunday. Twice.

The final round play at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina was suspended due to inclement weather at 4:28 p.m. ET. The final group featuring tournament leader Scottie Scheffler was in the fairway on the 11th hole when play was called.

On the CBS broadcast, the Tour’s Senior Director, TV rules and review analyst Mark Dusbabek made it clear that play was called due to lightning in the area and not because of the heavy rains that were falling. At 6:30 p.m. ET the final update came that play would resume at 7 p.m. ET, ending a two-and-a-half-hour delay. Less than an hour later at 7:47 p.m. ET the horn sounded to call play for the day due to darkness.

Nine players will return to the course at 8 a.m. ET Monday morning to finish he tournament. Scottie Scheffler, who has won three of his last four starts, holds a five-shot lead with three holes to play.

ATLANTA — The only thing Scottie Scheffler was confused about on Saturday evening was the order in which he was to have dinner and go to bed before playing the last 23½ holes of his epic PGA Tour season. The actual golf seems pretty straightforward. The FedEx Cup leader, at 19 under par, held a one-shot lead over playing partner Xander Schauffele when play was suspended because of bad weather as Scheffler prepared to hit his approach into the 13th hole of the third round of the Tour Championship.

“I’ll just go home and get some sleep and food … sorry, food and then sleep,” the World No. 1 said when asked how he will prepare for Sunday at East Lake Golf Club. Scheffler, Schauffele and 12 others will finish their third rounds beginning from 9:45 a.m. ET on Sunday. Final-round tee times will then run from 11:16 a.m. to 1:50 p.m.

“In the morning I’ll go through my normal warmup like it’s a regular tee time,” Scheffler said.

Play was suspended at 6:36 p.m. by a second set of storms that dampened the day, and one could argue it was good timing for Scheffler, even though he said “it definitely stinks and nobody wants to deal with that.” He was struggling to get his game going, sitting only even par on his round thanks to a birdie at No. 8 and a bogey at the par-3 11th.

He sounded confident of resetting himself before preparing for a run at a fifth PGA Tour victory of the season. If he can pull it off, the Texan’s earnings for the season will be $32 million— $18 million of that coming from the FedEx Cup winner’s bonus .

“At the end of the day, it's still a golf tournament and I've been in some intense situations this year, the Masters definitely being one of them and the other three [victories],” said Scheffler, whose wins include earning his first green jacket at Augusta, the WM Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Dell Match Play. “The start-stop [nature] of the Match Play would definitely be something that would be similar to tomorrow. But I've got a good routine that I go through in between rounds, and it looks like we’ll have a bit of a buffer.”

While Scheffler and Schauffele (who is one under for the round) are at 19 under and 18 under, respectively, Sungjae Im is only three shots off the pace and still has four holes left in his third round. Then there’s Rory McIlroy, the two-time FedEx Cup winner, also in the mix.

The Northern Irishman delivered perhaps the biggest injection of excitement on Saturday when he mixed four birdies, an eagle and a bogey to be five under through 16 holes. McIlroy’s eagle came at the par-5 sixth, where he hit a stunning second shot from 196 yards to two feet. He was 15 under and standing on the 17th when the siren sounded.

Lurking one shot behind McIlroy is a stellar group featuring 2017 FedEx Cup winner Justin Thomas, Sepp Straka, Jon Rahm and defending FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay.

Pebble Beach weather: Here’s the PGA Tour’s plan for the final round

Will the Pebble Beach Pro-Am finish 72 holes?

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Update 12:45 p.m. ET: The PGA Tour has officially postponed the final round to Monday. Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. PT on both the first and 10th tees.

Update 10:20 a.m. ET: After initially announcing tee times will not begin until at least 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET) , the PGA Tour further delayed the first tee times Sunday until at least noon PT (3 p.m. ET). This assures a Monday finish if the final round is to be completed.

Wyndham Clark heads into the fourth round at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am with a one-shot lead over Ludvig Aberg, but he might have already won the tournament.

Severe weather threatens to impact the weekend rounds at Pebble Beach for the second straight year, and this time it’s possible the final round could be scrapped entirely.

“Our regulations say we need to make every effort to play 72 holes, which includes playing on Monday,” PGA Tour Chief Referee Gary Young said Saturday night. “Right now that’s our thinking. We would then probably, if we can’t play tomorrow, we would come in first thing on Monday morning.

“I’m hopeful right now. I mean, we have been playing a pretty soggy golf course. Obviously, if we get upwards of two to three inches on the high side right now, then that makes that a little more doubtful.”

This year’s Pro-Am has been plagued by poor weather from the start, with preferred lies in effect for each of the first three rounds. But players, fans and Tour officials have been wary of Sunday’s conditions from the jump.

As of 9 p.m. EST Saturday night, the National Weather Service is expecting up to 4.5″ of rainfall for Pebble Beach through Monday morning and sustained winds above 40 mph with gusts upward of 60 mph Saturday night and Sunday. The area will have a high wind warning until Sunday 10 p.m., a high surf advisory until Monday at 4 a.m. and a flood watch until 10 a.m. Monday.

Young said the PGA Tour’s onsite meteorologist was reporting a similar forecast, making it necessary to formulate a plan for the final round of the event on Sunday and potentially Monday.

Here’s what Young laid out Saturday night:

– Tee times for the final round will start at 7:45 a.m. PST.

– PGA Tour rules officials will arrive at the course at 5 a.m. to assess the conditions and make a decision if they will delay play or not.

– Players will be notified of a delay, if required, at 5:15 a.m.

– If there’s a delay (Young said if there is, it will likely be “significant”), players won’t get another update until 9:30 a.m.

“That realistically means we won’t start before noon tomorrow,” Young said. “And that will give us a little more time to see how things — if it continues to deteriorate, we would make a decision later.”

– For the final round to be completed at all, it must start before Monday at 10:15 a.m. If the Tour is not certain the final round can be completed starting at that time, the event will not be pushed to Tuesday and will be shortened to 54 holes.

Wyndham Clark, John Ellis

‘Biggest thing for me’: Wyndham Clark thanks 1 club change for Pebble record

Monday’s forecast is only marginally better than Sunday with a 60 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 22 mph.

Young said the Tour would be fighting just as hard to get in all 72 holes whether the event was a $20 million Signature Event or not.

The tournament has prepped for rough weather all week, even removing a couple of scoreboards and barring spectators from the course Wednesday due to high winds. The Tour has already been slowing green speeds down in anticipation of the winds.

“We’ve been moving from 11 and a half [on the stimpmeter ] and now we’re down to about 10 and a half heading towards 10, so we’re trending right where we needed to for this big wind event tomorrow,” Young said.

This is far from the first time weather has impacted the Pebble Beach event. Just last year, play was suspended early on Saturday , necessitating a Monday finish after the third round needed to be completed Sunday morning. The event has been shortened to 54 holes six times since 1974, most recently in 2009 when Dustin Johnson won.

Mother Nature was not giving golfers a break on Sunday. Play was suspended at 4:28 p.m. during the final round of the RBC Heritage due to heavy rain and lightning in the area on Hilton Head Island. The final group featuring tournament leader Scottie Scheffler was on the fairway on the 11th hole when play was called.

Final round pushed to monday at at&t pebble beach pro-am because of weather.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – A storm that brought 60-mph wind gusts and heavy rains forced the second consecutive Monday finish — and the fourth Monday finish in the last seven years — at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The start of the final round was delayed at Pebble Beach and officials announced at 9:30 a.m. PT that there would be no play on Sunday.

“Although the rain is expected to dissipate later today, the high winds are forecast to remain throughout the day. Due to concerns over safety, there will be no golf played Sunday,” a memo to players read.

The final round is scheduled to start at approximately 8 a.m. PT on Monday off the first and 10 th tees with the final group scheduled to begin at 10:25 a.m.

Under Tour regulations, officials would only begin the final round on Monday if they had enough time to complete 18 holes.

“The drop-dead time on that would mean we would have to start play on Monday by 10:15 a.m. at the latest in order to complete play,” said Gary Young, the Tour’s chief referee. “The forecast right now on Monday is for showers in the morning, rain amounts are in the .2 to .4 inches in the morning.

“We’re already dealing with a very soggy golf course and at that point we’re making the decision whether or not we think that the standards for professional golf are there.”

Wyndham Clark made a charge up the leaderboard on Saturday with a 12-under 60 and leads Ludvig Åberg by a shot. The last Tour event that was shortened to 54 holes was the 2016 Zurich Classic.

“I definitely thought about it [Friday] night and this morning with everyone saying how bad the weather’s going to be. All right, well, you’ve got to have that mentality that today’s the last day so try to go for broke,” Clark said following his third round. “With that said, that’s very rare that we have 54 holes, so I wasn’t banking on that and I’m still not banking on it.”

The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am received signature-event status for this season and was limited to a field of 80 professionals (and 80 amateurs for the first two days).

There is a scenario, however, that could extend it into Tuesday.

If officials begin play on Monday and over half the field completes play prior to a suspension, Tour rules require the event to extend another day. If less than half the field were to complete play — or they never start — Clark will be declared champion.

PGA Championship rain delay rules and Oak Hill weather forecast Saturday

pga tour delay update

The weather may be the leader while everyone else stays in the clubhouse on Saturday.

The PGA Championship opened with a frost delay . Up to a half inch of rain is expected for the third round, so the tournament could pull a Tom Kim and get stuck in the mud on moving day.

Welcome to Rochester. At least it's not snowing in May. Which totally happens .

Rain will begin Saturday morning just before the first pairing is scheduled to tee off and could last all day. Temperatures will meander into the low 60s.

The Sunday forecast is sunny with a high of 73 degrees.

Then Rochester will smirk with a week of near-perfect weather after the fanfare, production trucks and world's best golfers leave town.

More: Saturday updates from Oak Hill's PPGA Championship

Here's what happens if the inclement weather horn sounds at Oak Hill Country Club and there's a delay on Saturday:

How many types of PGA Tour weather delays are there

Two. There is a normal suspension or immediate suspension.

An immediate suspension is indicated with a single extended horn sound which indicates there is immediate danger. That isn't likely to happen this weekend.

A normal suspension is signaled with three consecutive horns. Players can choose to finish the hole they're on or stop playing. A player may not begin a new hole. There are two short horn sounds when play resumes.

What is water pooling on the PGA Tour

A rain delay has just as much to do with water drainage as current precipitation conditions. If water pools on fairways or greens, there is more likely to be a normal suspension. Rain delays could also be activated when players have difficulty gripping clubs or their feet are slipping when hitting the ball.

What do players do with their golf ball during a delay

During a normal suspension, a golfer must mark their ball with a marker. If the weather elements move the marker, the player is required to put the ball back in its original location before play resumes.

If there is lightning, a golfer can leave the course without picking up or marking their ball.

When does a PGA Tournament finish if there's a rain delay

When play resumes later in the day or the next day, golfers may play 36 holes in one day. If a tournament can't finish 72 holes through Sunday, the tournament could extend into Monday or even Tuesday.

Braves-Nationals start time: Rain delay updates from DC for Hurston Waldrep's debut

By cody williams | jun 9, 2024.

Eddie Rosario, Austin Riley Washington Nationals vs. Atlanta Braves

Whatever the Atlanta Braves probably thought their trip to the nation's capital for a weekend four-game series against the Washington Nationals was going to look like, they probably haven't seen it. But even after winning the opener before losing the next two behind anemic offensive performances, they still entered Sunday with a chance to split the series.

Even bigger for the Braves is a hopeful solution for the hole in the fifth spot in the starting rotation with top prospect and former first-round draft pick Hurston Waldrep set for his MLB debut. But unfortunately, it will have to wait.

The Nationals and the ballpark announced that the game, initially set for a first pitch at 1:35 p.m. ET, will be starting in a weather delay with inclement weather and some rain in the area.

pic.twitter.com/HoXPvI6gep — Nationals Park (@NationalsPark) June 9, 2024

So when will the game actually start after this delay?

Braves-Nationals rain delay updates: When will the June 9 game start?

In truth, the weather is not actually looking bad enough for a delay. However, there is rain and high winds in the forecast throughout early afternoon. Having said that, this delay based on the forecasted rain stopping around 2:00 p.m. ET should stop and the Braves-Nationals game should be on track to start by 2:30 p.m. ET at the very latest.

Again, though, the weather leading up to the start of the game did raise some questions about the delay being necessary at all. MLB.com Braves insider Mark Bowman showed a press box photo of the weather and, well, it looked like a beautiful day.

The start of today’s game has been delayed due to rain in the area. I’m actually serious this time. About the delay. The rain? I’m not so sure. pic.twitter.com/gcD54iQ0Jf — Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) June 9, 2024

Having said that, with sustained winds around 15-20 mph, rain is expected to roll in quickly but thankfully roll out just as quickly with showers in the forecast only looking like they'll go for about an hour. With that plus the high winds, though, a minor delay does make some sense.

Tiger Woods gives update into PGA Tour-LIV Golf negotiations

PINEHURST, NC — Tiger Woods agrees with the positive reports coming out of Friday’s meeting between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf’s Saudi owners.

“It was productive,” Woods said on Tuesday from the U.S. Open. “Is there light at the end of tunnel? I think we’re closer to that point than we were pre-meeting.”

Woods flew to New York last week to attend the meeting that included Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of the Saudi Public Investment Fund.

Rory McIlroy was the first player to express optimism on the meeting, which he attended virtually from the Memorial Tournament, adding that the two groups have been meeting remotely three times a week for several weeks.

Webb Simpson, a player director on the influential PGA Tour policy board, also agreed.

“I think there’s positive momentum going right now,” Simpson said from Pinehurst. “I think both sides seem to not only be engaged, but want to continue to be engaged as much as possible. That feels good. It feels good that we’re finally at a place where I think we all want similar things.”

More than a year after the infamous “framework deal” was announced at the RBC Canadian Open, the golf world remains fractured. Even more difficult than putting together a multi-billion dollar deal will be the task of putting a broken game back together in a professional game marred by major grievances and massive egos.

But according to Woods, even that was on the the table last Friday.

“We discussed a lot of different endings and how we get there,” he said. “I think that both sides walked away from the meeting, we all felt very positive in that meeting. As I said, both sides were looking at different ways to get to the end game.

“I think that both sides shared a deep passion for how we need to get there. And yes, there are going to be differences of opinion, but we all want the same thing.”

2024 RBC Canadian Open leaderboard: Robert MacIntyre secures first PGA Tour victory with father as caddie

The rookie had to scratch and claw on sunday, but the effort resulted in a career-defining moment.

The first one never comes easy. Robert MacIntyre learned that this week at the 2024 RBC Canadian Open as the PGA Tour rookie successfully held onto his 54-hole lead at Hamilton Golf & Country Club for a one-stroke victory over Ben Griffin at 16 under. The win marked the first of MacIntyre's PGA Tour career, and it came with his father serving as caddie.

With his maiden triumph, MacIntyre becomes the fifth rookie to win on the PGA Tour this season, joining Matthieu Pavon as those who utilized the DP World Tour pathway to get to this stage. Not only has the Scotsman locked up his playing privileges for the next two seasons, he enters the winner's circle at a timely point on the calendar as he punches his ticket into the U.S. Open in two weeks at Pinehurst.

The win was particularly emotional for MacIntyre, who admitted that a bit of homesickness led to him calling his father, Dougie, to caddie for him this week in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

"I'm speechless, to be honest," MacIntyre told CBS after the victory. "... This is just everything for me and my family. ... I can't believe I've done it with him on the bag. I'm crying with joy but laughing because I didn't think this was possible."

Dougie shared details of the sudden the decision before MacIntyre confirmed that his father would be returning to Scotland with him unlikely to play next week.

"I got phoned last Saturday. I'm sitting on the couch at home, 8:00 Saturday night. I gotta leave my job -- you know, I'm busy at work -- by 8:00 the next morning, I'm on a flight out here. Wow," Dougie said.

MacIntyre began the final round in possession of a record four-stroke lead, his first after 54 holes on the PGA Tour. He saw that advantage disappear within just over an hour of play as he dropped a shot on the first hole while Canadian Mackenzie Hughes rattled off three straight birdies in the penultimate group to square the two momentarily.

Hughes was not the only player to throw punches in the direction of MacIntyre as Tom Kim opened with three straight birdies and Rory McIlroy made his presence known with four birdies in his first six holes. The two turned in 4-under 31 and looked primed to post a number the 27-year-old would need to surpass.

Instead of growing concerned, MacIntyre responded with three birdies to close out his front half including back-to-back efforts on Nos. 7-8. With Hughes leaking oil and Kim dropping a shot ahead of him, the burly left hander seized control of a five-stroke lead and the tournament with an emphatic birdie on the difficult par-4 11th.

With seven holes to play, MacIntyre appeared in full control until he wasn't. A misfire off the tee with an iron on No. 12 led to a bogey and another one followed soon after on the par-3 13th. He remained in good shape as Kim and McIlroy posted 13 under in the clubhouse, but the tournament got tense when Victor Perez birdied his last to get to 14 under.

For a moment, it appeared that would be the number for MacIntyre to beat from 16 under; however, playing partner Griffin entered the conversation with a lengthy birdie conversion on the par-3 16th to pull within two. Griffin continued to apply pressure with another birdie on the par-5 17th to cut the lead to one with one to play.

That would be as close as he would get with MacIntyre leaving no doubt when his approach into the finisher settled 9 feet from the pin with two putts available to secure the title. When Griffin missed his birdie chance from just off the green, MacIntyre patiently found the bottom of the cup with his father right there by his side to witness it all. Grade: A+

Here are grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the RBC Canadian Open.

T4. Rory McIlroy (-13): McIlroy's week consisted of some good golf and some not-so-good golf, yet he almost won anyway. His iron play stole the show on Thursday and Saturday where he gained more than six combined strokes on approach across those two rounds. Unfortunately for McIlroy, these two performances sandwiched one on Friday in which he lost three strokes with the scoring clubs en route to carding a 2-over 72. Paired with Kim over the weekend, McIlroy drafted on the youngster's momentum and emerged late on Sunday as MacIntyre's biggest threat. A couple back-nine birdies in the final round made it so he played his last 36 holes in 11 under, but it wasn't enough to capture win No. 27. Grade: A

"A good week," McIlroy said. "Three really good rounds of golf, one not so good one. Felt a little out of sorts on Friday. Did a good range session and sort of rectified it. So, yeah, overall, three rounds out of four were really good and just that one disappointing one on Friday, but overall after a week off where I didn't really, didn't feel like I prepared as well as I probably could have. Yeah, it was a solid week."

T4 . Tom Kim (-13): Kim made the biggest move early Sunday. The three-time PGA Tour winner failed to take advantage of the par-5 4th and the short par-4 5th but did well to add one more to turn in 31. Birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 pulled Kim within a couple of the lead and gave him a chance to go and post a number. A miss from inside 4 feet on the 14th halted all momentum leaving Kim without much hope. Amid a somewhat uneventful year, Kim's play in Canada marks his first top-five finish of the season and could serve as a launchpad for the remainder of the summer. Grade: A

T7. Mackenzie Hughes (-10): After Nick Taylor broke a 69-year drought last year, Hughes aimed to become the second straight Canadian to win his nation's open. He got off to a dream start rattling off three straight birdies from Nos. 2-4 to touch the lead and put his country's flag above the rest. His biggest mistake of the day came on the short par-4 5th where he dropped a shot before another came a few holes later at No. 9 after hitting a shank on his second which effectively took him out of contention. Grade: A-

T21. Tommy Fleetwood (-7): The Englishman hovered for most of the week and entered the final round with a fighter's chance. His opening double bogey immediately put any thoughts of a comeback to a rest as Fleetwood was unable to recover and ultimately settled for a top-20 finish instead. He has played some nice golf since San Antonio -- highlighted by his podium finish at the Masters-- but Fleetwood is still without a true contention run on the PGA Tour in 2024. Grade: B-

MC. Sahith Theegala (--): Theegala's weekend omission came as a bit of a surprise as he arrived ranked second in total strokes gained this year among those in the field. He never got things rolling in the right direction and experienced everything from a 4-putt double bogey to his driver breaking. It marks Theegala's second individual missed cut of the season and his first since the Sony Open in early January. While disappointing, there shouldn't be too much concern about the state of his game. Grade: F

One-stroke lead with one to play

Ben Griffin makes birdie and Robert MacIntyre does well to make par on 17. They head to the last with Bobby Mac leading by one.

Oh, hello Ben Griffin

Ben Griffin from DEEP! The lead remains two strokes, but Ben Griffin is officially lurking as he plays alongside Robert MacIntyre. With two holes remaining, Griffin will hope to close the gap starting with the par-5 17th.

How you doin, Victor Perez?!

Wow, wow, wow. That's how you finish! Victor Perez closes with a birdie on 18 to post a 6-under 64 and snag the clubhouse lead at 14 under. That puts him one behind Robert MacIntyre who still has a handful of holes to play at 15 under.

Kim and McIlroy post clubhouse lead

The two played alongside each other the final two rounds and they both post 65-64 over the weekend. They are in the clubhouse at 13 under and two behind Robert MacIntyre who has five holes remaining.

Lead trimmed to three

Well, things have tightened. Rory McIlroy makes birdie on the 17th to get to 13 under while Bobby MacIntyre makes bogey on the 12th after hitting his tee shot into the water hazard. He just missed the green on the par-3 13th meaning McIlroy could apply a little pressure if he is to birdie the last and post the clubhouse lead at 14 under.

PGA Tour’s Jay Monahan gives update on merger negotiations with LIV Golf: ‘It’s going to take time’

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 12: PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan speaks during a press conference prior to THE PLAYERS Championship on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on March 12, 2024 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. (Photo by Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia are ongoing and that he and investors flew to Saudi Arabia in January to meet with PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

Speaking at his annual news conference before the Players Championship, Monahan maintained that a deal with PIF is the best outcome for the PGA Tour and that he and Al-Rumayyan have a “shared vision” for how to end division and grow the sport.

But, Monahan made sure to clarify multiple times, “It’s going to take time.”

Citing the ongoing nature of those discussions as he’s done for the past nine months, Monahan declined to expand on any details of where things stand with PIF. For example, he did not comment on any potential path back on Tour for LIV golfers or if there’s a future for team golf in a hypothetical agreement.

The PGA Tour also partnered with Strategic Sports Group (SSG), a consortium of billionaire investors, who invested $3 billion to help form the new PGA Tour Enterprises in February. Monahan said SSG agreed it was important to engage with PIF, and SSG investors went with Monahan to meet with PIF in January before finalizing the deal. He did not think the SSG deal made PIF negotiations more difficult or discouraged them.

“I do believe that negotiating a deal with PIF is the best outcome,” Monahan said. “Obviously it has to be the right deal for both sides, like any situation or negotiation.”

Monahan was asked often about frustration from his PGA Tour membership with how this has been handled and whether or not LIV players should be allowed a return back. He did not deny a direct question asking if the PGA Tour policy board has ever asked him to resign, saying there has been lively debate but he considers it now a unified front.

“I can’t generalize as it relates to players,” Monahan said, “but clearly given the responsibility I’ve been given by both boards, I have the support of our board, and I am the right person to lead us forward. I know that. I believe that in my heart, and I’m determined to do exactly that.”

Monahan also spoke about refocusing on golf fans. Golf as a sport is at its most popular, thanks in part to a golf boom during COVID-19, and Monahan said much of the hope for SSG getting a return on its investment is to provide more value for fans. He said feedback from fans has been a desire to see more golf shots during coverage, more data and analytics and more innovations like mic’d up segments with mid-round interviews of golfers.

2024 US Open odds: Top sleeper picks in the field for Pinehurst this week

The 2024 U.S. Open is just a day away with some of the top golfers in the world set for the third major championship of the year. Pinehurst Resort & Country Club is one of the top public courses in the country and is hosting the U.S. Open for the first time since 2014.

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler is fresh off a win at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio . That's his fifth win of 2024. He's already won one major championship this year in the Masters Tournament. He has more than twice the total points than world No. 2-ranked Xander Schauffele , who won the second major of the year and the first of his career in the PGA Championship.

It's no surprise then to see the two major championship winners lead the latest odds for the win in Pinehurst . But we could see a new major championship winner come Sunday. Here's the top long shot bets for this weekend's U.S. Open and their odds to win, per BetMGM .

2024 U.S. Open: Sleeper picks roundup

Chris breece, pgatour.com : max homa (+5000).

Breece says: "This almost hit for me at the Masters, so I’ll try it again. Homa has the exact pedigree that fits the mold of first-time major winner you didn’t think was going to happen. He has two top 10s in his last three majors. Perhaps the narrative is coming to an end."

Adam Christensen, Golf.com : Aaron Rai (+15000)

Christensen writes: "The double gloves he uses for extra grip will be an advantage in the humid Southern climate, giving him a slight leg up on the competition. He’s also extremely accurate off the tee and above average in approaches and around the greens. If he can magically conjure up a good putting week, maybe he can pull off a miracle."

World No. 8 won't compete in Pinehurst: Jon Rahm withdraws from 2024 US Open due to foot infection

CBS Sports : Hideki Matsuyama (+4500)

Patrick McDonald says: "Matsuyama is among the leaders in proximity from over 200 yards, bogey avoidance and strokes gained around the green -- all of which will be important at Pinehurst. The major champion has slowed since his torrid start to 2024 playing only three times since the Masters, but he flashed signs at Memorial that his game (and his health) are close to, if not, 100%. He's made seven straight cuts in the U.S. Open, including a runner-up finish in 2017 and a backdoor top five at The Country Club two years ago."

Bob Harig, Sports Illustrated : Dean Burmester (+10000)

Harig writes: "The LIV Golf player won a LIV event prior to the Masters, has been strong in other LIV tournaments, tied for 12th at the PGA Championship and qualified through the Florida event to make it to Pinehurst."

The Athletic : Min Woo Lee (+6600)

Dennis Esser says: "[Lee] has gained more than 4.4 strokes ball-striking in three of his last four events. He gained over 6.3 strokes with his short game at the PGA Championship and finished fifth at the U.S. Open in 2023. Lee is built for big moments, and he has an imagination around the greens."
