Shoes: We advise you to wear comfortable walking shoes as the inner yard of the Rila Monastery is cobbled. Walking around the monastic complex (optional) also requires comfortable walking shoes. Photos: Boyana Church Taking photos in the inner yard is allowed, but it is strictly forbidden to take photos inside the church. The time spent inside the Boyana church is limited to a maximum of 10 minutes, as a preservation measurement for the UNESCO World Heritage site’s fragile frescos. The restaurants around the monastery are not accepting debit/credit cards. For your personal expenses, we recommend bringing leva in cash with you. Food: There are two restaurants near the monastery serving local delicacies (e.g. grilled trout, bean soup, sheep yoghurt with honey). In peak season they can be rather slow on the servings. There are also some fast food options. The most famous is the monastery’s bakery offering made-on-the-spot mekitsi – Bulgarian doughnuts. If you wish to spend more of your free time exploring the monastery and its surroundings than you should consider bringing a lunch pack with you.

Rila Monastery – UNESCO site

The Rila Monastery is one of Bulgaria’s symbols and a popular tourist destination. The monastery is set deep in the heart of Rila Mountain, between the Rilska and Drushliavitza Rivers, at 1147 meters (3760 feet) above sea level. It is situated 120 kilometers south of Sofia, and 41 kilometers east of Blagoevgrad. The monastery was found in the first half of the 10th century AD. Its history is directly connected with the first Bulgarian hermit, Saint John of Rila, or ‚Ivan Rilski’, who chose this site to pray in seclusion. Through the ages, the Rila Monastery served as a spiritual, educational and cultural center for the Bulgarians.

During the Bulgarian Revival (eighteenth-nineteenth century) the monastery opened about fifty metohia – small convents located in the bigger settlements on Bulgarian territory and its monks frequently went there to officiate, educate and popularize the monastery among the laymen. Most of the present complex of the Rila Monastery dates from the nineteenth century. The oldest building here is the Hrelyova Tower. Every inch of the principal church here, Nativity of Mary is covered by frescoes, work of the most renowned Bulgarian Renaissance painters.

From the end of the nineteenth century onwards, the Rila Monastery has a museum with historical exhibits from the region. The exposition includes important examples of Bulgarian and foreign art from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. The most precious exhibit is the finely carved wooden cross, the work of Father Rafail. He worked on his masterpiece for years, using the finest chisels and tools, and completed it in 1802, losing his eyesight due to the strenuous work. The cross represents 36 Biblical scenes, eighteen on each side, with over 600 miniature figures.

Boyana church – UNESCO site

Boyana Church is a small temple on the outskirts of Sofia with frescoes dating back to three separate periods: the 11th, 13th  and 19th centuries. The most important and fascinating are the frescoes dating from 1259. They are Renaissance frescoes that predate the Italian Renaissance (triggered by the works of Giotto) and brake the strict Christian canon law to present pure human emotions, royal figures and folklore elements.

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia in a Day

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia in a Day

The spectacular, yet tranquil, Rila Monastery is probably one of the most popular tourist sites in Bulgaria. Located less than 200km from the capital, Sofia, it is a fabulous day trip. Despite being so popular, it is not particularly easy to get to. In this post, we have provided options for travel from Sofia and a detailed guide about how to visit Rila Monastery from Sofia in a day. As usual, we have included out helpful tips and some useful local knowledge.

How to Visit Rila Monastery

What is Rila Monastery

Rila Monestary dates back to the 10 th  century and is still a fully functioning religious site. It sits 1,147m up in the Rila Mountains, providing a truly spectacular backdrop. St John of Rila is thought to be the creator of the Monastery. The Rila Monastery is one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural sites.

Where Is It?

This incredible complex sits in the southwestern Rila Mountains. It is only 117 km (73 mi) south of Bulagaira’s capital city, Sofia, and west of Plovdiv, in the spectacular and peaceful valley of the Rilska River (“Rila River”)

Why Visit Rila Monastery

We initially thought that it seemed like an awful lot of effort to visit another religious site. After deciding to give it a go, we realised we couldn’t have been more wrong.

Not only is this a historic, yet functioning, religious site it is also an incredible place to visit for those of all faiths and none. There is something there for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful and beautiful surroundings, as well as the unusual architecture of the buildings.

Combining it with a hike to the Rila lakes really made a perfect day out of the city and we would recommend making the extra effort to visit, if you have some extra time in Bulgaria.

How to Get to Rila Monastery from Sofia

There are a few different ways to visit Rila Monastery from Sofia in one day. We have outlined them below and included various public transport options as well.

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia – By Car

Visiting Rila Monastery by car is probably one of the easier options. The drive from Sofia takes less than 2 hours and most of the route is on the A3 Sofia- Kulata highway. There is parking when you arrive at the Monastery, however, it is not free and you will need cash. When we last visited it was 5Lev but we’d recommend bringing more in case it has increased.

Keep in mind, the road signs in Bulgaria are in the Cyrillic alphabet and then in English below. If you decide to rent a car in Bulgaria, please consider taking out the full insurance as drivers in the Balkans have their own unique style…

Remember to plan your journey in advance as there are many smaller roads that can be quite tricky. A 4×4 is recommended if you plan to drive in rural locations. Most roads are generally in very good condition. However, it’s good to keep in mind if you explore more rural areas.

Renting a car will provide a lot more freedom and independence and make it easier to stop at any other points of interest.

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia – By Bus

If you don’t have a car, or don’t fancy driving, there are a few other options to visit Rila Monastery from Sofia. There are local buses that can take you there but they only depart once per day from the Bus and Coach Station Zapad – Ovcha Kupel at 10:20 and arrives at 13:00.

The return bus leaves RIla Monastery at 15:00 and arrives back in Sofia at around 17:30. This will give you 2 hours in the Monastery which should be enough time. However, make sure you don’t miss the return bus!

For both legs of the journey, you will pay a total of 22lev (about €11.50)

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia – By Tour

Taking an organised tour from Sofia to Rila Monastery is a great idea if you are tight on time. All travel is organised for you and most options include a guide. Some tour options even include other nearby stops such as the Rila 7 Lakes hike. We did this and would highly recommend it. Check some tour options HERE.

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia – By Shuttle Bus

There is a shuttle bus from Sofia to Rila Monestary that departs daily. It leaves from the St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral and in front of La Cattedrale restaurant at 10:00 and arrives by 12:00, depending on traffic. The shuttle returns from Rila Monesary to Sofia, leaving at 15:00 and arriving by around 17:00.

Tickets vary in price and are more expensive than local buses – often around €20 per person. However, it is possibly a bit more convenient and you get a guided tour of the Monastery. You can book in advance HERE .

What Else to See in the Area?

A visit to Rila Monastery from Sofia is a great idea! However, if you have some more time in the area we would strongly suggest you explore it some more. In one day it is possible to see the Monastery and another of the following beautiful locations – Ivan Rilski Cave , the Stob Earth Pyramids and Rila 7 Lakes .

We combined a visit to the Monastery with a hike to the Rila 7 Lakes. It was a very long day but so worth the effort!

How to Visit Rila Monastery

Some Practical Tips for Your Visit to Rila Monastery

No Smoking is allowed on the grounds of the Monastery. You cannot take videos or photos inside the church or museum and you must be silent while inside. This is because it is still a functioning religious sight.

Short skirts and shorts are not allowed. We would also not recommend sleeveless shirts and women might want to bring a scarf/shawl to cover shoulders. As it is in the mountains, the temperature is a little cooler anyway so this is just all round good advice!

There are a few small shops and places to eat and get snacks at the monastery. We had the Monastery bread and it was delicious! There is also a bathroom on site.

Some More General Tips

The local Currency is Bulgarian LEV. 1 LEV equals about €0.50. We would recommend having some cash in case card is not accepted.

Final note: Things change in the Balkans all the time and there is not much information online in English. We would definitely advise checking with a local where possible. We found people to be really friendly and super helpful.

We love to travel and share our Balkan experiences to assist and inspire

Hey, thanks for leaving a comment! I would certainly recommend visiting the 7 Rila lakes, as well as the monastery. It is a full on day but very worth it. We didn’t feel too rushed and even found we had quite a lot of time at the monastery. The chairlift is an extra 25 lev but it is a long way and it saves A LOT of hiking. If you take the route suggested by the guide, you will see some really spectacular scenery. There is a chance there will still be some snow as it is pretty high. All the lakes should be defrosted by now and certainly towards the end of May. Always best to check the forecast before you set off. We hiked through a bit of ice but it was perfectly pleasant, even with just regular trail shoes. I would say it was probably our best day in Sofia! Enjoy 🙂

Thanks for a great guide. I am heading to Sofia in a few days and is thinking about doing a similar trip to Rila monastery and 7 lakes, but I have been told it usually very snowy up there and that u have too little time when u do the combined trip. What do u think? And are u paying 25 lev each way for the lift? Hope u have some tips 🙂

I’m gutted I didn’t have time to head out here when I was in Sofia a few years ago, it looks stunning!

We would love to hear what you think! Cancel reply

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia, Easily & Hassle-Free

How to Visit Rila Monastery from Sofia, Easily & Hassle-Free

Of all the jewels of Bulgarian tourism, Rila Monastery shines the brightest. This gorgeous Orthodox monastery is nestled in the pine-covered hills of the Rila Mountains, like a secret tucked away from the world.

However, it’s not that secret — it is one of Bulgaria’s top tourist attractions, and visiting Rila Monastery from Sofia is one of the most popular day trips from Bulgaria’s capital.

With jewel-toned paintings telling an incredibly complex story in panels adorning the walls of the church, to its beautiful arches painted joyfully, to the pared-down white monastic building surrounding the church at Rila Monastery: Rila Monastery impresses us more and more each time we visit… which is a lot!

Because it’s on so many travelers’ wishlists to go from Sofia to Rila Monastery on a day trip, we end up accompanying our friends on a day tip to Rila Monastery nearly every time someone is in town – which means that between us, we’ve been to Rila Monastery six times, at least once in every season.

It’s shocking that it took us this long to finally write up our guide to visiting Rila Monastery from Sofia – but better late than never, we suppose! In this post, we’ll go over how to get to Rila Monastery from Sofia by car (our preferred method), tour (the second-best option), or public transit (the hardest, but cheapest). We’ll also cover things to see at and near Rila Monastery, and where to eat near Rila Monastery if you are traveling by car.

Getting to Rila Monastery from Sofia by Guided Tour

There are several guided tour options that bring you to Rila Monastery easily and hassle-free. Most guided tours pair Rila Monastery with another sight best visited by car, so you can get a 2-for-1 experience.

rila monastery day trip

For UNESCO seekers and budget travelers, we strongly suggest the Rila Monastery and Boyana Church day trip.

For just 30 euros, it takes you to two of Bulgaria’s most beautiful UNESCO sites on a full-day tour, including transport and an English-speaking guide. Check tour itinerary and more details here.

Stephanie did a tour basically identical to this one on her first visit to Rila Monastery and loved it!

Bulgaria - Sofia - Boyana Church

Boyana Church may not look like much from the outside, but inside, you’ll find magnificent frescoes from several distinct periods of the church’s existence. The church itself dates back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest surviving churches in Bulgaria.

Be sure to bring a little cash for entrance fees (the Rila Monastery Museum, optional, is 8 leva/4 euros per person and Boyana Church, mandatory, is 10 leva/5 euros per person), lunch, and tipping your guide.

If budget is your main concern, but you don’t want the hassle of public transit, there’s another option! You can skip Boyana Church and visit Rila Monastery only, which costs 20 euros for a shuttle transfer (no guide) that gives you two hours to explore Rila independently. Check tour details and availability here .

rila monastery day trip

There are also several other options which include a stop at Rila Monastery and somewhere else in Bulgaria. Our preference would be for this epic and affordable Rila Monastery and 7 Rila Lakes tour , well priced at 40 euro per person.

It’s pretty hard to work out the timing yourself if you self-drive (Steph and I once attempted it and messed up the timing big-time and had to forego the Lakes!), so doing it on a day trip where they keep you on track time-wise is a much better idea.

However, because the Rila Lakes are at a pretty high altitude, the tour is only available from late May until early fall. Check tour availability, inclusions, and itinerary here.

If you’re more into learning about Bulgaria’s delicious wine scene, there are two fabulous tour options for you — this one which includes wine tasting of 5 local wines at Medi Valley winery near Rila Monastery, and this one which includes the lovely town of Melnik in the heart of Bulgaria’s best wine region.

Getting to Rila Monastery from Sofia by Public Transit

Full disclosure: in our cumulative six visits to Rila Monastery in every season, we’ve never taken public transit because both renting a car or taking a tour are so economical and easy.

According to the Free Sofia Tour , here’s how you do it:

There’s only one daily public bus to Rila Monastery. It leaves at 10:20 from the West bus station (Ovcha Kupel). You can get there in around 25 minutes with tram N5 just behind our starting point at the Palace of Justice. The bus arrives around 13:00. It leaves to Sofia at 15:00 and is back in the city around 17:30. Return ticket cost 22 BGN (11 EUR) and you buy it from the driver.

Bulgaria - Sofia - Tram

Considering that a tram ticket to and from Ovcha Kupel costs 3.20 BGN, your total for transit for the day would be 25 leva, 12.50 euros. Considering that the cheapest shuttle option (here) is 40 leva / 20 euros, we’d definitely recommend taking the shuttle over the bus to save time and headache. The price difference is not so huge, and it can be a bit difficult to navigate the Bulgarian bus system without a good grasp on the language, especially if you have no knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet!

However, if you’re on a tight budget to the point where 15 leva makes a huge difference, you’re welcome to test out public transit for yourself — we’ve never done it, so we’d love to hear from you!

5 Things to Do at Rila Monastery

Check the murals and decorations both inside and outside the church.

rila monastery day trip

I don’t know what’s more exquisite at Rila Monastery – the stunning colorful exterior, painted in nearly every shade in the rainbow and telling a dramatic story, or the beautiful interior with its moody lighting, gold-plated detailing, or dramatic iconostasis.

Luckily, you don’t have to choose — visit both! Be sure you dress appropriately for visiting the monastery: both men and women need to cover shoulders and knees.

Visit the Ecclesiastical Museum

rila monastery day trip

Holding objects from the monastery’s history, including some beautiful portraits and historic weaponry, a stop in the museum is a great way to spend thirty minutes learning a bit more about the monastery’s past.

If you’re pressed for time or on a guided tour, feel free to skip. However, if you have the extra time it makes a great addition to your visit Entrance is 8 leva / 4 euros.

Get an incredible view from the Tower of Hrelja

rila monastery day trip

This 14th-century tower served as a defensive structure for Rila Monastery and is the oldest structure in the Rila Monastery complex.

There’s a 5 leva (2.50 euro) charge to go to the top of the tower.

Shop for souvenirs and kitsch

rila monastery day trip

We love Bulgarian souvenirs , and we always suggest monasteries as one of the best places to buy them! Because Rila Monastery is so touristic, you will find a greater proportion of mass-produced crap, but there are also beautiful gems that you can find: we recommend picking up a painted icon if it means anything to you!

Visit the Ivan Rilski Cave

rila monastery day trip

Past the monastery about 3 kilometers, you can visit the cave of Ivan Rilski – the saint for whom the monastery is named. You’ll find a parking area with Bulgarian signage directing you to Ivan Rilski’s grave. The hike takes about 20 minutes and you’ll want proper footwear for it!

Once you reach the endpoint of the hike, you’ll see a small chapel and the cave where Ivan Rilski spent years in hiding. You can enter Rilski’s cave and visit it for yourself if you’re not too claustrophobic! There are some stairs that allow you to pass through a small tunnel leading up to a narrow exit. Supposedly, only those with a clean soul can exit through the tunnel… so if you’ve sinned a lot lately, maybe don’t test your luck!

5 Things to Pack for A Day Trip to Rila Monastery

rila monastery day trip

If you’re planning a day trip to Rila, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind. For more, check out our  complete Bulgaria packing list.

–  A physical guidebook, in paper or on Kindle . We love  Lonely Planet Bulgaria & Romania  for this region and strongly recommend it to supplement blogs. Blogs are great, but a combination of a blog and a guidebook is key to having the best access to information easily at your fingertips.

–  A water bottle with a filter . While generally, the tap water in big cities in Bulgaria is drinkable, such as in Sofia and Plovdiv, we generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant! We recommend  the GRAYL water bottle  – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

–  Motion sickness pills . Bulgarian bus rides can be hot and stuffy in the summer and cause motion sickness! If you have a weak stomach as we do, save yourself and bring some  non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

–  Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, TP & other Balkan transit needs.  Bathrooms in the Balkans tend to be… how can we say it?… not so well-stocked. Save yourself the disappointment (and germs!) and bring a mini-rescue pack of  wet wipes  &  hand sanitizer .

–  Travel safety items . We think Bulgaria is very safe to travel, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Some people like to carry  money belts , but neither Stephanie or I use these. Instead, we both carry the same  PacSafe anti-theft backpack . It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as it’s neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Where to Stay in Sofia

Bulgaria - Sofia - Sense Rooftop Bar Allison

If you choose Sofia, here’s where we suggest you stay.

Budget:  For a hostel, we always recommend  Hostel Mostel .  I have never stayed at the Sofia location but several of my friends have and have always spoken highly of it. I stayed at the one in Veliko Tarnovo and it was excellent. Perks include a free vegetarian dinner in addition to breakfast included in your stay!  Check rates and availability here . If you are traveling in peak season, be sure to book online, as Hostel Mostel is popular and tends to get booked up.

Mid-range:  For a trendy new boutique hotel that is shockingly affordable, we recommend  R34 Boutique Hotel.  The location is fantastic, near the Ivan Vazov National Theater in central Sofia. It has gorgeous, loft-inspired details like exposed brick, giant windows, and streamlined but modern décor. It’s a great bargain, too –  check rates, reviews, photos, and availability here .

Luxury : As far as we see it, there’s only one option for the best hotel in town: Sense Hotel. We go to their upscale, beautiful rooftop bar all the time when we have guests in town – it has one of the best views in the entire city and they make fantastic cocktails. With beautiful views over Alexander Nevsky, Sofia’s most iconic landmark, the hotel couldn’t be in a better location. Sense Hotel also boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center, an art gallery in the lobby, an excellent spa with luxe treatments, and an indoor pool. It’s truly the best choice in town.  Check rates, reviews, photos, and availability here.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Finally, make sure you always travel to Bulgaria with a valid  travel insurance  policy. The country is a very safe place to travel, but accidents or theft can easily ruin your trip if you don’t have the travel insurance coverage to recover the losses. Recently my aunt fell on a train in France and needed surgery, but luckily her travel insurance covered the costs in full. Thank goodness!

For travel insurance, I use  World Nomads . I’ve been a happy customer of theirs for almost three years, and I’ve never had an issue when making a claim. I’m happy to refer them to anyone I meet.

While visiting Bulgaria in the summer, I went on an adventure to Rila Monastery from Sofia. I’d never heard of this place but it soon popped up on my radar after doing some research on day trips from the capital. In this guide, I’ll tell you to visit independently and share the best Rila Monastery tours from Sofia.

My whole time in Bulgaria was kind of a happy accident. I was visiting Romania on the way from Asia before relocating to Mexico. I’m aware that’s a whole load of places that have no relation to Bulgaria but, basically, I discovered that flights to the UK from Bulgaria were a tenth of the price they were from Romania. I decided to travel overland from Romania and check out what Sofia was all about before boarding a budget flight home. I’m so glad I did! Not only did I love Sofia as a city, but the Bulgarian countryside took my breath away. Then there’s the hearty Bulgarian cuisine at ridiculously cheap prices compared to Western Europe. If you’re on the fence about visiting Bulgaria, I hope that doesn’t last long!

There are a few day trips from Sofia that I would recommend. In this guide, I’m going to tell you about my day trip from Sofia to Rila Monastery including how to get to Rila Monastery from Sofia, what to see, and tips for your visit.

Why to visit Rila Monastery

Located just under 2 hours drive from Sofia, it’s easy to take a day trip to Rila Monastery. Over 1,000 years old, the monastery is a great visit for history lovers and you can learn a lot about Bulgaria’s past. Then, there’s the draw of its hidden-away location surrounded by mysterious mountains and forest. Rila Monastery can even be seen on the 1 lev banknote. As one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural sights, you shouldn’t miss it.

Quick history of Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery is part of the Orthodox Church, a type of Christianity widespread in Eastern Europe. The houses of worship are traditionally very grand and impressive, often inspired by Middle Eastern architecture. This particular monastery was once the home of a hermit, St John of Rila, and in fact, it still is because his remains reside there. During Ottoman rule in Bulgaria which lasted almost 500 years, Rila Monastery was one of the few Orthodox houses of worship that wasn’t turned into a Greek Orthodox Church by the Ottomans. It’s credited with keeping the national religion and language safe, as well as protecting lots of important Bulgarian artefacts and manuscripts. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed much of the monastery in the late 1800s but luckily, the architects of the country came together to restore the famous monastery. There are a few ways to travel from Sofia to Rila Monastery. The most convenient way is of course by car. If you’re hiring a car in Bulgaria , you won’t need to pay for a tour or figure out bus schedules. Car rentals in Bulgaria are affordable and start at £10 a day. Rila Monastery day trip by tour: This is the option I took. The GetYourGuide Sofia to Rila Monastery tours are affordable starting from €20 so I decided it was the best option since I don’t drive. I only had one spare day to see Rila Monastery before flying back to the UK so I didn’t want to risk missing the local bus or anything going wrong. Browse Rila Monastery tours. You can opt for a tour including Boyana Church, St Ivan Rilski Cave or 7 Rila Lakes .

Sofia to Rila Monastery bus: The cheapest option for a day trip to Rila Monastery from Sofia is public bus. This leaves and departs once per day so make sure you don’t miss it. I’m not quite sure where you’d stay near Rila Monastery if you missed the return journey. To get to the bus and coach station, you can catch the N5 tram from the city centre. On the way back, you can catch the same journey from Rila Monastery to Sofia at 3pm, arriving at 5.30pm. How long to spend at Rila Monastery

Around two hours is enough time to spend at Rila Monastery. There’s not loads to do but you can wander the courtyard and head inside the Church of Rozhdestvo Bogorodichno. My favourite bit was walking the elaborately painted walkways with their detailed, colourful paintings depicting Bulgaria in days gone by. As well as being a gorgeous place to explore and take photos, Rila Monastery is extremely pretty and peaceful. Dense forest surrounds the monastery giving the feeling you’re really in the middle of nowhere. As well as the mysterious surrounds, I loved wandering Rila Monastery because the distinctive pink and yellow architecture looked dissimilar to anywhere I’d been before.

  • Midday – arrive at Rila Monastery
  • 2-3pm – depart Rila Monastery
  • 5pm – return to Sofia.

Of course, if you’re driving you could consider setting off early to beat the crowds and have Rila Monastery to yourself. The times above reflect the public bus and tour bus schedule so it’s always nice to mix it up if you can.

What else to include in a Rila Monastery day trip

If you want to see more of Bulgaria (who could blame you?), here are a few other options…

Boyana Church & National Museum of History

Boyana Church is an Orthodox Church dating back to the 10th century, much like Rila Monastery. The incredibly detailed and colourful paintings are considered some of the best-preserved of their kind. They don’t look as ‘perfect’ as the ones at Rila Monastery but that’s probably because the church wasn’t lost to a fire and rebuilt in recent centuries. Since Boyana Church is located close to the bus and coach station (Zapad – Ovcha Kupel), it’s a natural stop when visiting Rila Monastery as a day trip from Sofia. Many guided tours will include a stop here en route. Alternatively, if you’re visiting by public bus, you could do a DIY stop to Boyana Church. It’s a 12-minute drive so if you can flag a local taxi, you can swing by before heading back to central Sofia. Useful details: Opening times are 9.30am-5.30pm from April to October and 9am-5pm in the winter months. Entrance is 8 lev ($5 USD) per attraction or €10 for both the church and the museum. Book a combined day tour to Boyana Church and Rila Monastery (€20).

Seven Rila Lakes

If you don’t mind a busy day, you can tick off another amazing place in Bulgaria while visiting Rila Monastery from Sofia. Seven Rila Lakes are a cluster of lakes (seven if you didn’t guess by the name) in Rila National Park. Check the Rila Monastery map at the start of this blog to see their location.

Seven Lakes Bulgaria

A couple of hours spent hiking them is time well spent. Not only are the views of the lakes incredible but you’ll get to enjoy the Bulgarian countryside and fresh air, plus sip crystal-clear water straight from the steams. While the Seven Rila Lakes are located closely to Rila Monastery, it’s a 1.5-hour drive through the windy mountains to reach them. For that reason, you wouldn’t be able to visit them and Rila Monastery from Sofia during the same day by public transport. If you have a car or take a 7 Rila Lakes and Rila Monastery Self-Guided Trip (€35), it’s a long day but worth it! You will depart from Sofia at 7am, arrive at Seven Rila Lakes for a few hours of trekking them drive to Rila Monastery and arrive back in Sofia by 7pm. It was long and tiring but overall, an amazing day.

Rila Monastery’s History

The Rila Monastery, nestled in the powerful hug of the highest mountain in the Balkans, has been an important cultural and educational center over the centuries. For many people, it’s Bulgaria’s holiest place.

In the 10 th century, a hermit monk settled down in a cave at the foot of Rila Mountain. Disgusted by the political situation in medieval Bulgaria and the corruption of the church, he sought a place to practice his beliefs in peace.

People quickly realized the value of his wisdom. His followers rapidly grew in numbers. He was even revered as a saint while still alive, St. Ivan Rilski (St. John of Rila).

After St. Ivan Rilski passed away, his students founded the first Rila Monastery in his honor. The location was in the middle of a dense forest at 3,763 ft. (1,147 m) altitude about 2.5 mi (4 km) away from the monastery’s current position.

Throughout the years, the building was destroyed and robbed many times. Finally, in the 14 th century, Rila Monastery was established at its present location.

During the National Revival Period(between the 18 th and 19 th centuries), the cloister transcended into the biggest educational and cultural center in the Bulgarian lands. Some of the most prominent educators of the time gained their wisdom in Rila Monastery.

In that period, the abbey’s library opened its gates to pilgrims. The number of monastery visitors increased, and so did the number of newly erected buildings. The whole area transformed into a huge complex, which was able to accommodate everyone who sought enlightenment in the holiest place in Bulgaria.

At that time, Bulgaria was a part of the Ottoman Empire. The ruling sultans issued official decrees, which allowed the Eastern Orthodox monastery to function undisturbed. The monastery played a crucial role in keeping Christianity alive and sparking the upcoming fights for liberation.

What to See and Do at the Rila Monastery

Now that we’ve covered the essentials, let’s dive into the exciting bits! In this section, you’ll discover the spots you mustn’t miss during your visit to the Rila Monastery.

The Nativity of the Virgin Mary Church

The construction of the imposing church in the middle of Rila Monastery’s courtyard began in 1835. The most renowned masons of the century arrived to construct the edifice, which incorporates medieval elements and Baroque spatial principles.

The most distinguishable feature of The Nativity of Virgin Mary Church is the stunning frescoes. The most prominent Bulgarian hagiographers of the 19 th century – Zahari Zograf, Dimitar Zograf, and Stanislav Dospevski – painted the masterpieces you can see today.

Elaborate biblical scenes and depictions of the lives of saints and martyrs cover the church’s interior walls, the ceilings, and the façades under the arcades.

It took the skilled woodcarvers three years to create the central iconostasis. The result is unrivaled in its size and composition. The iconostasis features carvings, which resemble three-dimensional sculptures.

Hrelyo’s Tower, the Oldest Surviving Building of Rila Monastery

In 1335, the local governor Hrelyo helped construct the monastery’s tower.

Later named after him, the 75-ft. (23-m) high construction served as both a residential and defending structure. The top floor hosts a small chapel with magnificent frescoes.

Climbing the steep, narrow stairs is a challenging exercise.

However, the rewarding views of Rila Monastery’s arcades, the church’s domes, and the peaks of Rila Mountain are more breathtaking than the steps.

The History Museum, Keeping the Treasures of Rila Monastery

Rila Monastery’s History Museum boasts several priceless collections.

The items trace the evolution of the monastery and show its cultural, educational, and spiritual importance through the centuries.

On display, you can see numerous books, chalices, crosses, icons, and certificates, as well as gifts from pilgrims, politicians, and religious leaders.

Other magnificent items on display feature:

  • The original wooden door of Hrelyo’s Tower.
  • Certificates from sultans, confirming the independence of the monastery.
  • Icons from the 14 th and 15 th centuries.

After you’ve marveled at the other priceless treasures of the museum, check out what we believe is the highlight of the exhibition – Rafael’s cross.

Named after the monk who carved it, the cross measures 31.5 in (80 cm) by 16.5 in (42 cm). The unique wooden masterpiece contains a whopping 600 figures, grouped in 36 biblical scenes.

It took Rafael 12 years to complete his elaborate work, which unfortunately came at a high cost – his eyesight.

The Icon Gallery

Rila Monastery’s icon gallery displays 80 Orthodox icons. They were painted in the 18 th and 19 th centuries. Some of them were gifts from Greek monasteries.

Besides the magnificent icons, you can admire 28 portraits of the abbots of the monastery. In the period from 1860 to 2005, the head of the monastery changed quite often. Since the 2000s, the elected abbot has remained the same.

The Ethnographic Museum and the Guest Rooms

The only way to walk the terraces of the Rila Monastery is to visit the ethnographic museum and the guest rooms.

The museum’s exposition showcases costumes and jewelry from the 18 th and 19 th centuries.

In that period, merchants from several Bulgarian settlements had their own premises. They used the chambers during their stays in the monastery. The merchants also furnished and maintained the guest rooms in the spirit of their native towns.

Nowadays, you can see the well-preserved Koprivshtitsa, Teteven, Chirpan, Kyustendil, and Gabrovo guest quarters. Authentic furniture, as well as decorative, woodcarving ornamentations, adorn the spaces.

The Monastery Kitchen

The monastery’s kitchen is a staggering architectural achievement that impresses with its proportions.

An 82-ft. (25-m) high chimney ensures the smoke from the gigantic facility can escape without suffocating the cooks.

The oven is so big it might be able to fit a whole tourist bus inside.

And the enormous pots and spoons serve as a reminder of the countless pilgrims who visited the monastery throughout the centuries.

The Historic Bakery

The monastery kitchen is no longer operational. However, just outside the monastery walls, you’ll find the historic bakery. It was established in 1866.

Don’t leave the Rila Monastery without trying its legendary Bulgarian snack, called mekitsi .

The deep-fried dough melts in your mouth and is a great source of much-needed calories after the exhausting visit to the largest Bulgarian cloister.

Other Things to Do Around Rila Monastery

  • Visit the Stob Pyramids. The majestic sandstone natural creations are located near the village Stob. Rising up to 39 ft. (12 m), you can spot them from the road. Be careful if visiting after a rain. The ground becomes slippery making it dangerous to climb to the pyramids.
  • Stop at Orlitsa Nunnery. Before you reach Rila Monastery, you can pay a visit to Orlitsa Nunnery. The nunnery’s church was built in 1469 and keeps the relics of St. Ivan Rilski.
  • Taste Bulgarian delicacies at traditional restaurants. Several establishments along the way to the Rila Monastery offer freshly prepared Bulgarian dishes. Our recommendation is Gorchim . The fresh trout – grilled or fried – is to die for.
  • Try organic honey. You’ll see colorful beehives scattered at the foot of Rila Mountain. The beekeepers sell organic honey directly in front of their houses. Taste the healthy elixir of the gods before deciding which sort to buy.
  • Buy typical Bulgarian clay pots. Another vibrant sight by the side of the road is the piles of traditional clay pots. They are not just great travel souvenirs but also indispensable in the kitchen when preparing delicious Bulgarian dishes.

Food and Drinks at Rila Monastery

Here’s what you should know about the food and drink options in the monastery:

  • Eating and smoking within the monastery walls are forbidden .
  • Several fountains in and around Rila Monastery will satisfy your thirst with clear, refreshing mountain water.
  • Outside the Rila Monastery walls, you’ll find the historical bakery. Try the delectable mekitsi .
  • Next to the bakery, two restaurants also offer food. Their opening times are unknown and when they’re open, it’s hard to find a table there.
  • We recommend either packing your lunch or eating at one of the cozy restaurants along the way. Naddya’s favorite is Gorchim at the entrance of Pastra village.

rila monastery day trip

The Rila Monastery is the largest Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Present-day, it is still a running monastery and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of the main church, the residential section, and the museum. When visiting Sofia, Bulgaria , a day trip to the Rila Monastery is a must-do for a peaceful and tranquil day and should be part of any three week Eastern Europe itinerary.

History of the Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery is thought to be founded by St. Ivan of Rila during the rule of Tsar Peter I. He lived in a cave close to the monastery and would come out to teach his students. Many tsars accepted and donated to the Rila Monastery, thus helping preserve it throughout the years.

It was rebuilt in its current place during the 1400s after the Ottomans’ destroyed the previous ones. Throughout the years, the complex continued to be preserved and was often used as a school and a hideout for Bulgarian Revolutionaries.

In 1976, it was declared a National Monument and in 1983, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to Take a Day Trip to the Rila Monastery

The Rila Monastery lies 72 miles south of Sofia, Bulgaria. It is very easy to take a day trip to the Rila Monastery from Sofia. You have several options on how to get to the Monastery.

Option #1 and the easier option is to visit the Monastery through a group tour. We opted for this option because it was not expensive and also the easiest option. This tour included hotel pick up and a guide for the day. We were informed the day before the tour what time we were to be picked up. They were very prompt with the pick-up in the tour van and there were only four other people on the tour.

Here are some tour options

  • Rila Monastery and Boyana Church
  • Rila Monastery and Boyana Church (Small Group)
  • Rila Monastery, Boyana Church, and History Museum
  • Rila Monastery and 7 Lakes

Option #2 is to rent a car and drive yourself to the Rila Monastery and the surrounding area. I recommend renting a car through Autoslash as that is where I always find the best deals. It will take just under two hours to drive there.

Option #3 is to take a bus to the Rila Monastery. You can catch the bus at the St. Alexander Nevski Square. It takes 3 hours to get there by bus.

What to Expect

Taking a day trip to the Rila Monastery by guided tour made for a full but very interesting day. It was a 2-hour drive out to the monastery. Along the way, our guide/driver talked a little bit about the monastery and the route along the way.

Prior to getting to the monastery, we were stopped at a hotel/restaurant to use the bathroom. Then our guide drove us to where the original Rila Monastery stood. This area was very peaceful and quiet in the middle of nature. This spot is also the starting point for people wanting to hike through the Rila Mountains.

Cave of St. John

Our next stop was at the trailhead for the Cave of St. John. Saint Ivan of Rila spent much time in prayer and away from everyday life in this cave. We were not able to walk out to the cave, which was a bit disappointing as it is supposed to be very peaceful.

After that brief stop, we ventured over to Rila Monastery. As we got there, a lot of large tour groups were leaving, so it became infinitely less crowded. Our guide walked us around the complex for about 30 minutes and gave us information about the place.

After the guided tour, we were given 30 minutes to explore the Monastery on our own. We opted to climb the bell tower and see where the monks sometimes pray. It also had some great views of the dome of the Cathedral.

Once we finished at Rila Monastery, we were taken back to the hotel/restaurant for some lunch. Lunch was two courses and consisted of Monastery Soup (made of veggies and beans) and grilled chicken with potatoes. It was delicious! Lunch was not included as part of the day trip to the Rila Monastery.

On the way to our next stop at Boyana Church, our guide stopped us at a market to try Bulgarian Yogurt. Bulgarian Yogurt is unique because it is made from two specific starter bacteria and dates back many centuries.

Boyana Church

After a bit of a drive, we stopped at Boyana Church. This UNESCO site is a small church located at the foothills of the Vitosha Mountains. It is a trek to get out here, but worth it to see the frescos on the walls. It cost extra to go inside the church, but we opted to go inside. The amount of people allowed inside is limited, so if you do not come with a tour, make sure to book your tickets ahead of time.

Ending the Day Trip to Rila Monastery

At the end of the tour, we were dropped back off at our hotel. I really enjoyed this tour. I felt it was a fair price, our guide was excellent, and it made for an easy day trip to the Rila Monastery.

The one recommendation I had for the company was to include the admission price of Boyana Church and the lunch in the cost of the tour. I would have rather paid a bit more in order to not have to deal with the hassle of paying at the stops.

When visiting Bulgaria, a day trip to the Rila Monastery is a must-do for a peaceful and tranquil day. It is a UNESCO site and a working monastery. #sofia #bulgaria #UNESCO #rilamonastery

Wow, a beautiful and unique thing to do. Too bad you couldn’t visit the cave, I agree it would have probably been a really interesting thing to see. I’ll keep this post in mind for a future visit.

I know! I was super bummed about that part.

This is the kind of place I LOVE to visit! Wow for the architecture, the mountains and the painted walls. I can totally see why this became a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

It was gorgeous! I want to go back in the wintertime.

Plovdiv, boyona church and rila monastery – day trips from sofia or do they deserve more time.

Published by

rila monastery day trip

While spending the week in Sofia, we took day trips with the travel company Traventuria ( traventuria.bg ) to Plovdiv and the Rila Monastery. The trip to Plovdiv cost 35€ and the trip to the monastery cost 30€. Even though Bulgaria doesn’t officially use the Euro (yet), these trips were priced in Euro. The Rila Monastery trip included a stop at the Boyana Church which is just a few kilometers away from the center of Sofia. Both trips started with a two hour bus ride to their destinations. We met our guides and caught the bus right next to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at 8:00 a.m. for both excursions. The trip to Plovdiv included a ten minute “comfort stop” along the way.

rila monastery day trip

Both guides provided a wealth of information about Bulgaria, Sofia and our destinations on those days.  They were both very knowledgable and passionate about their home country and happily answered any and all questions about the people, history and culture of Bulgaria.

Plovdiv’s history stretches back over 6,000 years and it is possibly the oldest city in Europe. It is the 2nd largest city and the cultural capital of Bulgaria. In 2019, it was chosen as the European capital of culture. It features a maze of cobblestoned streets in its captivating old-town – word of warning – although the cobblestones in Plovdiv’s old-town are delightfully charming, they would pose a daunting challenge to anyone with mobility issues or pushing a stroller.

rila monastery day trip

We strolled uphill and entered the old-town through the formidable Hisar Kappa Gate which was built in the 2nd Century A.D. Immediately next to the gate is the Street of Crafts which features local artists offering their works for sale.

rila monastery day trip

We were in Bulgaria in late March and couldn’t notice that many of the trees had red and white braids tied to their limbs. Our guide explained to us that these are called Martenitsas and are a symbol of spring in Bulgaria. On the 1st of March Bulgarians exchange Martenitsas with friends and family. They wear the Martenitsas like a bracelet until they see the first sign of spring that year – either a stork, a swallow or a blooming tree. At this point the person will make a wish and either tie their Martenitsa to the tree branch or will put it under a stone.

rila monastery day trip

We think that time is best spent in Plovdiv’s old-town by aimlessly wandering through its labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and alleyways. Some key points of interest that you will come upon are:

The Regional Ethnographic Museum was built in 1847 and originally served as the residence of a prosperous merchant. The house features a beautiful garden and has been described as a prime example of Plovdiv’s mid-19th century baroque architecture. It was established as a museum in 1938.

rila monastery day trip

The bright orange Historical Museum is located in a beautiful former merchants house and features furniture and objects from the Renaissance period. The exterior ensures that it is definitely a building that you won’t miss.

rila monastery day trip

The St Constantine and Helena Church sits on a site that has been used for worship since 337 A.D. The current building was built in 1832 during the rule of the Ottomans. The church features a beautiful interior, but is not very imposing on the outside. During the rule of the Muslim Ottomans, the christian Bulgarians were not allowed to build a church that was taller than an “Ottoman on a Horse”. Since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the church has been enlarged and the bell tower has been added.

rila monastery day trip

It may seem odd, but Plovdiv’s “old-town” is not where you will find the oldest structures in the city. As you head down the hill on the other side of the old-town you will come to the 6,000 seat ancient Roman theater of Philippopolis. This theatre was constructed in the 1st century AD during the reign of Domitian. The theater features impressive acoustics and is still used for concerts today by well known artists. In 2019 Sting performed a concert in this beautifully preserved theater.

rila monastery day trip

Continuing from the theater you will reach the neighbourhood of Kapana which is also called the “Mousetrap” due to its maze of narrow, winding streets that captivate visitors and draw them into this charming area much like a mouse into a trap. Kapana is known as the creative district of Plovdiv where traditional craft shops and modern art studios co-exist harmoniously. It also features some of the city’s best restaurants that offer traditional Bulgarian food with a modern twist. The vibrant street art and colourful murals add character to every corner of this neighbourhood.

rila monastery day trip

Just outside of Kapana, you will find the ancient stadium of Phiipopolis (yes same name as the theatre) which was built in the 2nd century AD under the direction of Emperor Hadrian. The stadium was 50 meters wide and 240 meters long and had a capacity of 30,000 spectators. The stadium ruins expand throughout the pedestrian shopping street. The H&M clothing store is just one location where you can pay to see the ruins underneath the store.

rila monastery day trip

Plovdiv’s main pedestrian area is almost 2 KM long, making it one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe. It is lined on both sides with rows of colourful buildings, each with unique architectural details and decorative facades. The street is dotted with cozy cafes, trendy bistros and taverns. It is home to shops and art galleries showcasing local crafted goods. Nestled amid the vibrant ambiance are historical landmarks and architecture gems including ancient ruins and Ottoman era buildings. It is a dynamic and lively destination where culture, cuisine and creativity converge.

Plovdiv is a fascinating place that features a beautiful balance of ancient sites spanning multiple eras of history and a trendy, modern youthful vibrance that energises the city. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. When we visit Bulgaria again, we will definitely stay in Plovdiv for at least two nights.

Boyana Church

Enroute to the Rila Monastery, we made a short stop at the UNESCO listed world heritage site Boyana Church which is located just a few miles from the center of Sofia. The church actually consists of three parts. The oldest section of Boyana Church was built in the 10th century. In the 13th century the church was enlarged by Sebastocrator Kaloyan who added a two storey section and finally the third building was added on to the other two in the 19th century.

The frescoes in the second building, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings in the world. The Boyana church is not very big, but it is one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art.

rila monastery day trip

The church is very small. It costs 10 Bulgarian Lev (approximately $5 U.S.) to enter and only ten people are allowed to be inside at one time. Visits are limited to ten minute intervals and photography is not allowed inside. However, the impressive interior is worth the cost and inconvenience.

Rila Monaste r y

Back on the bus, it took about 2 hours to reach the Rila Monastery which is located in a stunning setting in the Rila Mountains about 117 KM (73 miles) south of Sofia. This would be a nice drive from Sofia if you are interested in renting a car and visiting the monastery on your own. One small problem with this option is that parking was very limited at the monastery. It’s also possible to reach the monastery with public transportation from Sofia.

rila monastery day trip

The monastery, founded in the 10th century by St. John of Rila, originated as a small retreat and evolved into a significant centre for spirituality and community in medieval Bulgaria. Destroyed by fire in the early 19th century, the complex underwent reconstruction from 1834 to 1862. Representing a significant aspect of the Bulgarian Renaissance (18th–19th centuries), this monument signifies the revival of a Slavic cultural identity after centuries of occupation by the Ottoman Empire. The monastery was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 due to its more than 1,000 years of history and its impressive architectural and natural beauty.

rila monastery day trip

Upon walking through the gate into the monastery compound you are immediately blown away by the beauty of the area, both the natural setting and the man-made structures of the monastery. As the background noise of modern life is replaced by flowing fountains, singing birds, ringing bells and raging rivers you can feel the stress leaving your body. We visited on a spectacularly sunny day in late March and the snow covered Rila Mountains were simply breathtaking. It’s difficult to describe just how beautiful the entire location is, from the architecture to the artwork (interior and exterior) to the mountains – you need to take some time just to appreciate the wonders of this place.

rila monastery day trip

The interior of the church is stunning. From the artwork, the collection of relics and treasures to the religious ceremonies that may seem a bit mysterious to those unfamiliar with the practices of Orthodox Christianity. Believers and non-believers alike will get the sense of being in a truly spiritual place.

rila monastery day trip

One of the original towers from the 4th century that survived the 19th century fire still stands. You can climb halfway up the tower for 5 Bulgarian Lev. We opted not to climb the tower as we were told that from the half-way vantage point the view is less than spectacular. At the base of the tower there is a stand selling souvenirs from the monastery.

rila monastery day trip

There is also a history museum which costs 8 BGN to enter. As we were pressed for time and wanted to fully take advantage of the glorious early Spring weather, we did not visit the museum. With more time available, we would likely check out the museum.

There are two public restroom facilities within the monastery compound. The first one you encounter is on your left almost immediately upon walking through the gate from the parking lot. This one is very primitive and we recommend going to the other one which is about 100 meters away. Simply turn right after entering the grounds and start walking, the restroom will be on your right shortly before you reach the adjoining wall. Be sure to look for WC signs for both restroom facilities.

If hunger strikes, follow the path outside the monastery gates. Cross the bridge opposite the tour bus drop-off and spot a quirky little shack with folks lining up. Join the queue for a taste of Bulgaria’s pride – the Mekitsa, a scrumptious fried pastry. Grab one for 1 BGN and jazz it up with cheese, honey, jam, or powdered sugar for a small extra fee. We’ve tried both the savoury and sweet kinds and give them a double thumbs-up! There is also a stand selling something that looked like donut holes and two restaurants. One of the restaurants was closed when we visited, we were told that the restaurants close for the winter and were just preparing to re-open for the tourist season.

rila monastery day trip

Outside of the monastery grounds there are numerous hiking trails in the surrounding Rila Monastery Nature Park. Possible destinations include St. Ivan’s cave and final resting spot. During warmer months (June – September) the 6.2 mile Seven Rila Lakes Hike seems like a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Traventuria offers guided hikes of Seven Rila Lakes for 30€ per person.

For a full monastic experience, it is possible to spend the night in one of the dormitory rooms at the monastery. For a private room with en-suite bathroom it costs: 1 person 30 BGN, 2 people 50 BGN, 3 people 60 BGN per room per night. A Private room with a shared bathroom costs 20 BGN per person per night. For an even more austere evening, you can stay in a shared dormitory, prices are not currently listed for this option. (rilamonastery.info to see lodging options). There are also other guest houses and over-night options available in the area.

rila monastery day trip

The Rila Monastery is a must visit location if you are spending time in Bulgaria and it is another place that would make for a great day-trip destination from Sofia by car. If you are interested in hiking the Seven Rila Lakes trail and visiting the monastery an over-night trip would be a good option. If you only want to visit the monastery, a guided day trip provides enough time to appreciate this beautiful location.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have or just to say hello! Your presence and engagement mean a great deal to us.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy our YouTube video showcasing our trip below!

Happy Travels!
