Where Can I Wash RV

Where Can I Wash My RV Near Me?

Aaron Richardson

  • Last Updated: April 2, 2024
  • 7 minutes read

Use Google Maps or a directory like Yelp to find an RV wash near you. Simply enter “RV wash near me” in the search bar and see a list of nearby options. You can alternatively consider local RV parks or camping grounds, as they often have RV wash stations.

Locating where to get your RV washed can be challenging. This is because RV journeys often take us to unfamiliar places. In the first few weeks of my full-time RVing in Navarre, Florida, I struggled to decide where to get the vehicle washed. I eventually settled for the services of an RV detailer since they use the right products and the price wasn’t outrageous.

Your case may be different, but the good news is I have done enough research and created this article to walk you through the various ways to easily identify locations around you where you can wash your RV.

IN THIS ARTICLE

The Different RV Wash Options Around You

The Different RV Wash Options Around You

In the table below, I have illustrated the different easy-to-locate places around you to get your RV washed. This will help you make a decision faster in case you’re in a hurry:

Later in this article, you will also learn the price expectations to have in mind for washing RVs and the various options available to get such a service at a slashed price in different RV wash locations. So I encourage you to read to the end.

  • The Yelp database is the most valuable resource for finding RV wash services near you.
  • It has extensive user-generated reviews and ratings, along with pictures of these RV wash facilities taken by customers.
  • I have relied on the platform each time I travel inter-state to get insights into the quality and experiences of other customers about the best RV wash options in local areas.
  • However, if opening an account looks cumbersome, there are other options.

Let’s look at these various RV wash options in detail:

Truck Wash At Truck Shops

Truck Wash At Truck Shops

If you can locate a truck shop around you, finding a place to get your RV washed becomes easier. You can pull into these locations and align with other big rigs. I particularly like the RV wash option because it’s cheap and easy to find.

With online directories like DC Book Company, you can access a list of various truck wash stops in your location.

Meanwhile, prices vary by location but are usually charged by RV length.

Mobile RV Wash Companies

You can also find RV wash near you by contacting mobile RV wash companies. I recommend this option if your rig is stationary and moving it to truck stops is too much work. You must usually schedule to come wherever you’ve parked your RV. But their services aren’t the cheapest option, costing hundreds of dollars.

But the good side is that they often focus on cleaning the awnings, the plastic on your vent, air conditioning covers, your roof, and many other vehicle details.

Remember that most RV parks don’t allow cleaning of vehicles in the campground due to water usage and disposal. So, if you’re in a campground, get permission before using a mobile RV wash company.

Examples of reputable mobile RV wash companies include On The Spot, Greg Hoffman’s Mobile RV Wash, and Mr. H20, among many others, which you can find using the Yelp platform based on your current location.

RV Dealerships

RV Dealerships

If you’re looking for where to wash your RV near you, consider the closest RV dealership . If you don’t know any, you can ask local gas station attendants or fellow RV owners at the campsites.

Many RV dealerships operate wash facilities on-site because while selling RVs, they also want to ensure buyers leave the facility with clean rigs.

So, it’s possible to find an RV dealer near you offering a cleaning service. The best part of this option is that while you have access to get your rig washed, it also makes you closer to getting repairs and maintenance done if needed.

Google Search

A quick Google search is another way to find RV wash companies or facilities around you. However, it would be best if you input the right queries in the search engine to see the results you’re looking for

Log on to Google and type “RV wash near me.” The result will expose you to a long list of companies around your location currently offering such service, along with their opening times, cost, and customer reviews.

You can also leverage Google Maps to navigate your way to the location of these RV wash companies.

Yelp Database

image

Yelp is a company that publishes crowd-sourced reviews about businesses. People, especially tourists who just arrived in a new area, use the platform to locate places of interest like restaurants, bars, and hotels.

RV wash companies are one of the many businesses that Yelp can help you find based on your location. The best part is that it gives you access to other users’ reviews, ratings, pictures, and opinions about the company so that you know what you’re getting into.

To find an RV wash near you on Yelp, follow these steps:

  • Open the Yelp app or website.
  • Type “RV wash” or a related keyword in the search bar.
  • Add your location or enable location services to find options nearby.
  • Browse the search results, which include user ratings, reviews, and photos.
  • Filter and sort the results based on your preferences, such as distance or budget.
  • Click on a listing to view more details and contact information for the RV wash service you’re interested in.

How Much Does It Cost to Wash an RV?

The cost of washing your RV depends on the length and the type of services you want. Many auto detailing and RV wash facilities charge approximately $5 per foot.

However, the cost can go as high as $45 per foot when you want someone to rinse, wax, and do other interior detailing for your RV. Meanwhile, it also depends on your location.

While I was at Navarre, the RV detailer charged me $18 for a simple wash and wax. But sometimes, we land between $25 and $30 per foot on RVs. This price range can be different in other parts of the US.

For instance, some RV owners in Elkhart County, Indiana, testified spending around $300 to $450 for a wash and wax on a 44′ RV in campgrounds.

Where do you wash your RV?

You can wash your RV at specialized RV wash stations, truck stops, or even at home if you have the space and equipment. Many RV owners prefer using dedicated RV wash services so they don’t have to worry about proper cleaning and waste disposal.

Can you wash an RV in a car wash?

Yes, you can wash an RV in a car wash. Many car wash facilities offer large bays or specialized equipment for cleaning RVs and other oversized vehicles.

How do you dry an RV after washing it?

You can use a leaf blower on low settings to dry away water droplets from your RV after washing. Alternatively, you can use a soft, absorbent microfiber cloth or a squeegee to remove excess water. Pay attention to seams, corners, and windows as you dry the vehicle.

7 Quick and Dirty Tips For Easy RV Washing And Waxing

Published on April 7th, 2015 by Rene Agredano

Spring is here and it’s time to get your RV ready for the road. Maintaining your RV’s exterior by cleaning and protecting the gel-coat is the best way to start.

Although it’s not fun, regular RV washing makes your home on wheels look better, especially if you follow these seven quick and dirty RV washing tips.

Spring cleaning your RV starts on the outside.

RV washing

1. Wash and Wax Regularly

All new RV’s leave the factory with a protective gel-coat that slows down damage from sun, weather and the highway. The longer you leave dirt and grime on the surface, the faster it wears down that protective coating, making your rig look old and weather-beaten.

Thank you for subscribing to the Do It Yourself RV newsletter, keep your eye on your inbox for updates.

It doesn’t matter if your RV has a fiberglass or metal body , regular RV washing and waxing at least once a year keeps it looking good. As a bonus, bugs and road grime fall off much easier when you maintain the gel-coat finish.

2. Don’t Use Dish Soap

Frugal RVers are often tempted to use dish soap for washing your RV. But before you reach for that bottle of lemon-scented goo, stop! Dish soap is harsh and strips away the gel-coat.

It also leaves a film.

The longer that film sticks to the gel-coat, the faster the gelcoat deteriorates.

3. Wash with Baby Shampoo and Vinegar

RV owners have all sorts of favorite products to wash RVs. Some , including many dealers , recommend RV washing with simple baby shampoo , with small amounts of distilled vinegar added to the water.

The baby shampoo won’t leave a film and by adding vinegar, you’ll boost the washing power of the shampoo and eliminate water spots.

4. Try Waterless RV Washing

Waterless RV washing products are a good choice for two reasons: they won’t dry out your clear-coat and they’re eco-friendly. Products like Wash Wax All are especially great for full-time RVers who live in parks and campgrounds where rig washing is prohibited.

[asa]B006AFAWYI[/asa]

Using waterless RV washing products also means you won’t need to use valuable storage space for hoses and buckets. As a plus, you’ll be an eco-friendly RVer by saving water.

Waterless RV wash products are great for full-timers.

5. Don’t Use Microfiber Towels or Brushes

Gel-coats are tough, but they can’t stand up to microscopic surface scratches caused by washing your RV with microfiber towels and scrub brushes.

Microfiber is made with polyester (and many brushes are too), which may scratch your RV’s gel-coat. Instead, use softer fabrics like cotton baby diapers or lambswool mitts that won’t damage the surface. One DoItYourselfRV reader named Drew noticed that Winnebago recommends microfiber towels in this document .

Still, many car detailing enthusiasts note that microfiber towels often have tags or a rough hem that may scratch gelcoat. You might consider playing it safe and opt only for the lamb’s wool mitt .

6. Get Rid of the Bug Juice

Each time a bug hits the front end of your rig it splatters an acidic fluid that attaches to the gel-coat. Over time that bug juice causes pits and wears down the surrounding protective coating.

Wash off  bug residue as soon as you return home to prevent damage.

7. Finish with Floor Wax

Add a finishing touch by protecting your gel-coat with floor wax. Many RVers recommend using floor wax after washing your rig. Some however caution against using it on newer rigs, and say floor wax is better for RVs that have already lost their clear protective coating.

Washing your RV can be a chore but it pays off by preserving your hard-earned investment. With outside temperatures warming up, what are you waiting for?

Thanks for your comment Drew. Many car enthusiasts agree that microfiber towels could damage paint if cheap microfiber material is used, or the edge stitching on the towel rubs the vehicle’s surface. With lamb’s wool, you’ve got a better shot to avoid scratching from the towel/mitt material itself. Here’s some more forum discussion .

Funny, The Winnebago recommendations include the use of micro fiber towels…I wonder which article has the correct method(s)?

“5. Don’t Use Microfiber Towels or Brushes”

or…..

“Use care to make sure that a clean lamb’s wool mitt, sponge or micro fiber mitt or mop is used to apply soapy water.”

Taking care of a recreational vehicle requires a lot of time and effort to keep it in good shape. It gets exposed to harsh weather elements and often gets dirty if you are a frequent camper. RV wash products help make your work easier because they are great for cleaning the RV’s body, and most are formulated to add a layer of protection. Our buying guide features some ideal RV wash options for your consideration.

Benefits of RV Washes

  • Protect from weather and damage. Along with cleaning the surface, an RV wash also leaves a protective coat. The film that sits on the surface after the application prevents damage from weather elements and keeps dirt, dust, and debris away. It also prevents scratches, paint chips, fading, and more.
  • Prolong RV lifespan. By keeping your RV clean at all times, you prolong its overall lifespan. A clean surface is more protected and resistant to damage, which means it will stay in top shape longer.
  • Reduce maintenance. An RV wash will also help you prolong the time between cleanups. By washing your vehicle regularly, you keep it in top condition and reduce the need for excessive, time-consuming cleanups. The maintenance becomes easier and saves you money in the long run.
  • Enhance vehicle appearance. Many RV washes contain conditioners and waxes that make the vehicle’s surface shiny. By using them, you can achieve showroom results and show off with a sparkling-clean RV during your camping adventures.

Types of RV Washes

Spray-on washes are the easiest to apply. They come in convenient bottles with spray nozzles that quickly spread the liquid onto the surface. You can spray with one hand and wipe the product clean with the other by using microfiber towels or pads.

The downside to this RV wash type is the cost. Spray-on washes usually come in compact bottles that are convenient for passenger cars but too small for large RV surfaces. Therefore, while you may want to keep a spray-on wash for spot cleaning, you might need several bottles to wash the entire RV.

This type makes the most versatile option for cleaning RVs. Liquid washes come in large 32-ounce or 1-gallon bottles, and you often get to choose the size according to your needs. They can be applied by hand or a power tool, which makes cleaning very easy.

Typically, one bottle of liquid RV wash lasts for several applications on most vehicles. However, those who have big vehicles and travel frequently might want to consider getting a large bottle just in case.

Pastes are those RV washes that have waxes, usually carnauba. They clean and maintain the surface efficiently, leaving a thick film for more protection over time. They’re an excellent choice for those who want to achieve shiny results.

However, pastes are sometimes challenging to apply and wipe clean. Most RVers opt for spray-on or liquid washes that contain waxes instead of getting real pastes for cleaning their vehicles. Still, some people like to use them occasionally for enhancing the vehicle’s look.

Chemical Guys

Chemical Guys is a company that specializes in car-care chemicals, washing accessories, tools, and more. It was founded in 1968 and is based in Southern California. With a long tradition of top-notch automotive products, Chemical Guys remains one of the first choices among drivers. The Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss is one of the company’s most purchased and best-rated cleaning products.

TR Industries

TR Industries was founded in the 1970s as a division of Granitize Products Inc. It’s a family-owned company located in South Gate, Calif. We find it highly popular among drivers who need reliable products for cleaning, protecting, polishing, and waxing their vehicles.  The Gel-Gloss RV Wash & Wax is one of those products that allows for a cost-efficient and effective vehicle cleaning.

Meguiar’s was founded in 1901 and is located in Irvine, Calif. Being on the market for more than 100 years with high-quality and affordable products, the company gained a special place in the automotive industry. Meguiar’s Marine/RV One Step Cleaner Wax is one of its products that makes an excellent choice for RVers.

RV Washes Pricing

  • Under $20: The most inexpensive washes come in small spray-on and liquid bottles. They’re efficient and durable, but in most cases not large enough for cleaning RVs thoroughly. For spot cleaning or detailing, RV washes at this price point are hard to beat.
  • $20 and up: For a couple more bucks, you can get large cleaner bottles or kits with washes, conditioners, and waxes. Some of them even come with cleaning pads and towels. For the higher price, you get everything you need to wash your RV and make it shiny for the long term.

Key Features

Versatility.

First and foremost, it’s crucial to determine the RV wash’s compatibility with the vehicle’s surface. Not all of them are suitable for all material types, so it’s important to choose carefully to avoid accidental damage.

Some RV washes have versatile formulas that work on plastic, glass, metals, and more. These are great for a thorough cleanup of the entire RV, and they make a smart investment. Therefore, consider whether you prefer getting an all-purpose cleaner or several different products for washing and maintaining your vehicle.

Another important thing to consider is the protection an RV wash offers. Those who travel several times a year might want to get a product that provides strong weather protection. If you travel during summer, you want to get a wash that repels UV rays.

On the other hand, winter demands a conditioner that will protect the surface from low temperatures, water, snow, ice, and more. Some products offer protection from all possible weather threats, but they’re usually more expensive.

RV washes are highly popular because they not only wash the surface, but also keep it clean for a long time. They’re known to create a protective coat that repels dirt, dust, and debris from the vehicle. However, the longevity of the protective film differentiates from one product to another. Some will last longer than others, which is why it’s essential to consider each product’s durability before buying.

Abrasiveness

An RV wash should be free from chemicals and abrasives that could damage the surface. Toxic formulas might scratch or dent the paint as well as cause corrosion and premature aging. Look for nontoxic products with high scores in scratching and hazing tests.

We also recommend getting washes with biodegradable and environmentally friendly formulas because they’re safer for the planet. Moreover, after the purchase, make sure to test the product on a small area before applying it to the entire surface.

Other Considerations

  • Application. The ease of application shouldn’t be neglected, either. Not all RV washes are easy to spread and wipe clean; some of them require quite a bit of elbow grease. Before buying, consider whether you want a spray-on, liquid, or paste wash. There are even waterless products you can use for when a water source is not nearby.
  • Tools and Accessories. For efficient and thorough surface cleaning, it’s important to get accessories such as pads, brushes, and fiberglass towels. All of these work wonders on RVs and make washing surfaces simple. If you have a large RV and travel frequently, you might want to consider getting a powerful tool like a pressure washer.

Best RV Washes Reviews & Recommendations 2020

Meguiar’s marine/rv one-step cleaner wax, chemical guys mr. pink car wash soap and shampoo, aero cosmetics car wash wax kit, karcher car wash u0026amp; wax soap, trinova waterless car wash and wax kit, turtle wax ice car wash, all american car care products pink wash u0026amp; wax concentrate, bio-kleen super suds rv wash.

  • Most RV wash agents leave a residue if applied on a warm or hot surface. To prevent this, you can wash your RV under shade or on a cloudy day and ensure that the surface is cool before applying the wash.
  • Do not use a hard-bristled scrubber or brush to apply the RV wash. Some harsh chemicals may remove the wax or the paintwork, and the scrubber may leave scratch marks on the body. Instead, use a cloth or a sponge to work the wash over the surface.
  • If you are using a pressure sprayer to rinse the wash, hold the nozzle at correct angles to avoid detaching or breaking the side mirrors and windows. Change the pressure setting to low when you get to those parts.
  • Consider using a ladder when cleaning the roof of the RV. You should have someone else around to hold the ladder for you and dry the steps as you come down. Get on all fours to avoid sliding off the roof.

Q: Can I use an RV wash to clean the interior?

A: Most RV washes can be used to clean insect residues, food stains, and other dirty surfaces in your vehicle’s interior. However, most of the cleaning agents have a strong smell that you may not want lingering in your vehicle’s interior. Do not use it to clean your upholstery. Check the instructions on the packaging to determine where you can use the product.

Q: Will RV wash remove car polish?

A: It depends on the chemical formulation of the product you choose. Avoid using products with harsh chemicals if you want to preserve your RV’s original wax coat. A safe bet would be an eco-friendly cleaner with no harmful chemicals that may strip off the polish. However, most eco-friendly products aren’t the best at removing tough stains.

Q: How often should I wash my RV?

A: Ideally, you should wash your RV with a high-quality RV wash and wax at least twice a year. If it’s a great product and you don’t use your vehicle often, your RV will look clean and glossy for most parts of the year. You can clean it more often if your RV is often exposed to dirt to keep it well protected from weather and road elements.

Final Thoughts

Our top pick is the Chemical Guys Citrus Wash & Gloss . It’s helpful when removing dirt from your RV and offers long-lasting protection from harsh road and weather elements.

The Gel-Gloss RV Wash & Wax is a budget-friendly RV wash that’s capable of maintaining the mint condition of your vehicle. It’s protective and adds a layer of UV-resistant carnauba wax.

Is it Worth Having a Washer and Dryer in Your Travel Trailer?

Is it Worth Having a Washer and Dryer in Your Travel Trailer

If you’re a frequent RVer, having a washer and dryer in your travel trailer can be a great convenience.

Not only will it save you time and money when doing laundry while on the road, but it can also help keep your clothes looking their best during long trips.

While there are some considerations to make before investing in this type of equipment, it’s worth considering as an option for your home away from home.

Foremost, you’ll need to ensure the washer and dryer will fit within the confines of your trailer.

If you don’t have the space, looking into alternative solutions, such as portable laundry machines, using campground laundromats, or finding a local one might be necessary.

It’s also important to consider the garments you’ll wash on your trip. Some washers and dryers handle only certain fabrics, so it’s best to read up on the models you’re looking at before making a purchase.

Finally, think about how often you’ll be doing laundry and how much water you’ll need. A large-capacity washer and dryer may not be necessary if you’re only planning to do a load of laundry now and then.

Ultimately, whether to invest in a washer and dryer for your travel trailer is up to you.

Here are some pros and cons to consider before deciding if it’s worthwhile for your RV life:

  • Having a washer and dryer in your travel trailer means never having to leave home searching for a laundromat or suffering through weeks of dirty laundry.
  • You can save money by avoiding costly detergents at laundromats; instead, investing in bulk detergents that can last up to several months.
  • You won’t have to lug heavy bags of clothes around, saving time and energy.
  • Some models provide additional features such as spin cycles which reduce drying times, saving even more time.
  • A washer and dryer can be expensive, initially and in the future, with possible maintenance costs involved.
  • Installing a washer and dryer in your travel trailer takes up valuable space you could use for storage.
  • You must consider special plumbing considerations when setting up these appliances since they require access to water sources.
  • Power surges or lightning strikes can quickly damage an RV’s delicate electrical system without careful maintenance, resulting in costly repairs or replacements.

What Is the Smallest Travel Trailer with a Washer and Dryer?

What Is the Smallest Travel Trailer with a Washer and Dryer

The New 2023 Highland Ridge RV Open Range Light 275RLS , at a mere 34 feet in length, has a washer and dryer prep in the bedroom. It’s rare to find a travel trailer with a washer and dryer under 35 feet.

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer?

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer

Size is one of the most important factors when choosing a washer and dryer for your travel trailer.

Full-size laundry units are unsuitable for most campers, as they take up too much room.

Instead, look for stackable or portable models that fit into smaller spaces. Most RV dealers can advise you on the size units best suited for your particular trailer model.

Here are a few examples of washer and dryer units that can fit in a travel trailer.

1. Traditional Side-by-Side

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer Traditional Side by Side

While traditional side-by-side washer and dryer units can be bulky for mobile dwellings, they are ideal for those who don’t want to do multiple batches of laundry.

Plus, with a larger capacity, even the busiest of families can complete several loads in one go.

Yes, you may have to sacrifice floor space in your RV, but if you can clear a mountain of laundry quickly, it may be worth it.

2. Stackable

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer Stackable

Stackable washer and dryer units for travel trailers are a must-have for any RV lover looking for an efficient, space-saving way to wash their light loads.

These cleverly designed appliances come in a stackable form allowing users to economize on floor space, much like living in a chic studio apartment.

As if their modern design wasn’t enough, stackables are impressively energy efficient, designed with portability and convenience in mind.

The only tough decision you’ll need to make before purchasing a stackable washer and dryer unit is whether you will use electricity or propane to power the machines.

3. Combo

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer Combo

Who wouldn’t want the convenience of a washer and dryer in one compact unit?

That’s what combo washer and dryer units for travel trailers offer—a space-saving solution with ample efficiency that’s ideally suited for small living spaces.

Not only do these units save floor space, but they also typically require minimal energy to operate.

With their easy-to-use design, RVers love how convenient it is to have everything they need to keep their clothes clean in one place.

4. Portable

What Type of Washer and Dryer Can Fit in a Travel Trailer Portable

Portable washers and dryers are game changers for RVers who want to avoid hauling large appliances that add weight and bulk to their travels.

Not only do these units provide convenience, but there is a wide range of sizes, so even the tiniest RV spaces can accommodate them.

Portables come with various options, such as multi-stage drying systems, eco-friendly auto-sensing programs, and steam cycles that help reduce wrinkles and refresh clothes.

They are also incredibly energy efficient, using only a fraction of the electricity required by traditional washers and dryers. And many portable models allow for water conservation by using a “rinse and spin” cycle.

How Do You Power a Washer and Dryer in a Travel Trailer?

How Do You Power a Washer and Dryer in a Travel Trailer

There are several ways to power a washer and dryer in a travel trailer, depending on the electrical systems in the trailer and the type of appliances you use.

  • Hooking up to shore power: If you have access to a power source while camping, such as an RV park with electrical hookups, you can connect your travel trailer to shore power to run the washer and dryer.
  • Generator: If you don’t have access to shore power, you can use a portable generator to power your appliances.
  • Inverter: An inverter can convert the power from the battery in your travel trailer to the AC power required by the washer and dryer. However, this method may only be suitable for running the appliances for a short period as it can drain your battery quickly.
  • Solar panels: You can use solar panels to generate power stored in the travel trailer battery.
  • Propane: Propane-powered appliances are becoming increasingly popular in travel trailers, as they are energy efficient and easy to use.

It’s essential to note the electrical requirements of washers and dryers can differ, so be sure to consult the manual or manufacturer for the specific needs of your appliances.

Do You Need to Vent Your Camper Washer and Dryer?

Do You Need to Vent Your Camper Washer and Dryer

Vented dryers require an exhaust vent installed on your RV’s outside wall or roof so that the hot air produced during the drying cycle can escape.

Non-vented dryers, also known as condensation dryers, don’t require an exhaust vent as they use a built-in condensation system to remove the hot air created during the drying cycle.

Before installing your RV washer and dryer, double-check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific venting requirements.

Do Travel Trailers Come with Hookups or a Pre-installed Washer and Dryer?

Whether a travel trailer comes with hookups for a washer and dryer or a pre-installed unit depends on the specific model and manufacturer.

Some high-end travel trailers may come with a pre-installed washer and dryer, but it’s rare.

More often, travel trailers come with hookups for a washer and dryer but without the actual appliances. That way, you can choose the brand, type, and size of your washer and dryer to fit your needs.

Can You Use a Residential Washer and Dryer?

Can You Use a Residential Washer and Dryer

Yes, it is possible to use a residential washer and dryer in an RV. However, there are a few factors to consider when choosing appliances for an RV, as the electrical and plumbing systems in an RV differ from those in a residential home.

For example, the voltage of an RV is typically lower than that of a home, so you must choose washers and dryers compatible with your electrical system.

How Do You Do Laundry in an RV without a Washer and Dryer?

How Do You Do Laundry in an RV without a Washer and Dryer

Doing laundry in an RV without a washer and dryer can be challenging. However, there are several options for cleaning your clothes without bulky appliances.

  • Laundromat: One of the most common methods people use when they don’t have a washer and dryer is visiting a laundromat, whether at the campground or in town.
  • Hand Washing: Hand washing is an option for small loads of laundry. You can use a basin or sink to wash the clothes and hang them to dry. Hand washing is a good option if you’re traveling in a remote area with no laundry facilities.
  • Campground shower facilities: Some campgrounds have shower facilities for washing clothes. Bring a bucket into the shower, fill it with soap and water, and use it to wash your clothes.

Would You Buy a Travel Trailer with a Washer and Dryer?

Would You Buy a Travel Trailer with a Washer and Dryer

The decision to buy a travel trailer with a washer and dryer is one that many RVers take seriously.

Hopefully, this article has helped you decide whether a travel trailer with a washer and dryer suits your RV lifestyle.

In the end, it comes down to preference. Some RVers prefer the convenience of having a washer and dryer in their rig, while others like to do laundry on the go. Whichever option you choose, you can always change your decision down the road.

Ewan McGregor wouldn’t shave off any years. That mustache? Another story.

Ewan McGregor leans back against a wall with shadows from a window pane striping his face.

Ewan McGregor is swiping through his camera roll, looking for the picture that explains why he will never grow another mustache — unless a job requires it. And even then, he’d probably argue that the character should be clean-shaven. Dalí without a mustache? Surreal.

Before our conversation, I had resolved not to ask McGregor anything about facial hair. It seems that most of the interviews he’s done to promote his terrific Paramount+ With Showtime limited series “A Gentleman in Moscow” have spent an inordinate amount of time focusing on the mustache he grew to play Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a Russian nobleman sentenced to house arrest in a luxurious hotel following the 1917 revolution. Over four decades (and eight episodes), the good gentleman learns to let go of formalities and appreciate simple pleasures and embrace family.

But he never shaves off that damn mustache.

A model of restraint, ‘A Gentleman in Moscow’ is unlike anything else on television

Ewan McGregor stars as a Russian nobleman under house arrest after the 1917 revolution in the Paramount+ with Showtime adaptation of Amor Towles’ novel.

McGregor keeps scrolling. He’s in Atlanta, shooting “Flowervale Street,” a movie so secret that when he mentions its name, he immediately panics. “Oh, no. I’m worried that I just blew the title.” When I tell him it’s out there, he’s relieved. He wrapped shooting at 6:30 this morning, and here he is with me on Zoom, 4½ hours later. “I’m somewhat upside down, but it’s all good,” he says.

And he’s not that out of it, because when I tell him all I know about “Flowervale Street” is that David Robert Mitchell (“It Follows,” “Under the Silver Lake”) wrote and directed it, and it’s a mystery, and it might be set in the 1980s, and it might have dinosaurs, he says, smiling:

“Well, I’m not at liberty to discuss that in any way, so it could be in the ’70s with, you know, rodents. But it’s great fun.”

He finds the photo. He’s with his son, Laurie, who was just shy of 3 when it was taken. McGregor’s hair is light brown. His mustache is blond. He grimaces, saying, “There’s something about my blondie mustache that doesn’t look good on my face.” The picture was taken last year during the actors’ strike, which interrupted the filming of “A Gentleman in Moscow” with eight days remaining on the schedule. During the break, McGregor kept the mustache, grew a beard and waited. When shooting resumed in January, he finished his scenes and shaved it all off five minutes after production wrapped.

“There’s me in the makeup chair,” McGregor says with glee, finding another shot in his camera roll.

The experience of making this show is why I wanted to be an actor.

“I’m getting the feeling you’re never growing a mustache—”

“... again,” he interrupts, finishing my sentence. “Once it goes white, maybe. Then I think it might look good. Like, for instance, you’d look great with a mustache.” Which is funny because the last time I grew a beard, my kids, then little, called me Obi-Wan.

“There are worse things they could call you, believe me,” McGregor says, laughing.

McGregor played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the three “Star Wars” prequels and returned to the role for the 2022 Disney+ limited series. Shortly before we spoke, he surprised fans attending a 25th-anniversary showing of “The Phantom Menace” at the Atlanta Film Festival. He likes doing these kinds of drop-ins. A few years ago, he showed up at the El Capitan in Hollywood at 2 in the morning between films in a “Star Wars” marathon.

Ewan McGregor leans forward in a chair and looks off to the side for a portrait.

“They’re all in sleeping bags and blankets,” McGregor says. “It’s a good laugh. And it’s good for the ego when they give you a big cheer when they weren’t expecting you.”

Critics mostly hated “The Phantom Menace” when it was released, but the George Lucas-directed movie has been reassessed as the years have passed.

“We made the film for kids, but we didn’t hear from them then because they were kids and there was no Instagram, no social media. They didn’t have a voice like they do now,” McGregor says. “All we had was the critics and the noise of the people who didn’t like it. But those kids have grown up, and those movies are now their ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. It’s nice for me, that. Because at the time, the reaction was rough.”

We get to talking about the idea, explored in “A Gentleman in Moscow,” that less is more and the contentment that comes from casting aside what no longer serves us.

“You realize what things are not you,” McGregor says. “I’m 53. But I’ve got lots of friends who are about to be 60. And I keep noticing, watching shows on television, young people referencing 60 like it’s really old!” He stops, laughing. “You’re like, ‘Wait a minute.’ But it’s also learning about who you are, isn’t it? And you let go of the things that you don’t need.”

Ewan McGregor sits in a windowsill with one knee raised for a portrait.

The funny thing about McGregor, though, is that he’s someone who picks up hobbies quickly, becomes obsessed with them and then moves on to the next thing, never quite letting them go. He can ride a unicycle. He can play the guitar. He can blow a few tunes on the bagpipes. There’s always something going on. It used to be that he’d beat himself up over knowing how to do a lot of things moderately well as opposed to mastering a single talent. Now he just accepts that’s how he is. He can go out to his shed, look at the unicycle he hasn’t used for three years and know that someday he’ll give it another go.

“What about the bagpipes?” I ask. “Are they in the corner somewhere, gathering dust?”

“They are at the moment,” McGregor says. “But they will get blown again.”

It turns out McGregor is even more interested in talking about the bagpipes than about his “Moscow” mustache. It wasn’t that long ago, in fact, that he broke out his bagpipes. This last year, he was in his native Scotland for Hogmanay , the country’s new year celebration. He was out with his brother, who repeatedly called out for songs that McGregor didn’t know. “C’mon, shut up. I don’t know that one,” McGregor kept telling him.

A bearded man walking through a town in the series "Obi-Wan Kenobi."

When he was a kid, McGregor was a drummer in a pipe band. He never thought he’d be a piper because as a drummer, that would be, in his words, “going over to the dark side.” But when he was shooting the 2011 film “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” in the Scottish Highlands, he met a piper and, inspired by being home, bought some bagpipes and found a teacher in London. He took the pipes with him to the set of his next film — he won’t name it, but it was a “miserable” experience (“f— slow, like I was under house arrest”) — and asked the transport guy to put his trailer next to the generator.

“I’m the first actor in history to ask that, because usually you want to be as far away from the generator as possible because it’s so noisy,” McGregor says. “But it was perfect because I could blow my bagpipes for hours on end and no one could hear it because I was next to the drone of the generator.”

Hearing these stories, it’s easy to see why McGregor loved “A Gentleman in Moscow,” a series that asked him to learn how to do a number of different things — age a character over decades, play a father and a lover, explore the inner life of a man well versed in grief and loss who never loses his zest for living.

“The experience of making this show is why I wanted to be an actor,” McGregor says. “It’s such a beautiful piece; it leaves you thinking, ‘God, I hope there’s another one out there somewhere in the future.’ But who knows?”

“He’s so charming, but I resist using that word because it’s reductive,” says “Moscow” showrunner Ben Vanstone. “There’s so much thought and skill that goes into his performance, all of his performances, really.”

Vanstone says McGregor’s count ages 31 years in the series, not including what we see of the character in childhood flashbacks. But because the character’s mental burdens grow lighter over time, McGregor believes he becomes more relaxed and, in many ways, younger. He learns to live.

Circling back to what he said earlier about young people calling his friends almost ancient at 60, I ask McGregor how old he feels these days.

“I feel 53. I feel exactly where I am,” he replies. “I don’t want to be 35. I want to feel the age that I am.”

Is that because, I ask — adding that I’ve known him for so long now, almost an entire hour, so I can presume some insight — he wouldn’t trade the wisdom and experiences he’s accumulated to shave off a few years?

“No, I wouldn’t,” McGregor says. “I’m not afraid of aging. I’m not afraid of getting older. I’m not afraid of dying. I’m just so happy. I’m a lucky, lucky man.”

Russia’s fighters are waging bloody battles in Ukraine’s east to add to its captured territory.

Moscow supports this war effort with soldiers from outside the regular army, including some from a training camp in Chechnya.

Some join for the money, others to escape everyday drudgery, and some fight out of patriotism. But there are tearful goodbyes.

Soldiers trained in Chechnya range from battle tested mercenaries to raw recruits without combat experience.

Mayhem awaits them, as evident in the devastation of the city of Bakhmut.

Inside the Chechen Units Helping to Fight Russia’s War

Nanna Heitmann spent time observing Russian troops training in Chechnya, then later traveled to Bakhmut, Ukraine. Neil MacFarquhar reported from New York.

A hulking military transport plane roared onto the tarmac at the main airfield in Grozny, the capital of the Chechen Republic in southeastern Russia, and a group of 120 volunteer fighters heading for Ukraine clambered aboard.

Dressed in camouflage, the newly minted troops had just completed at least 10 days of training in Gudermes, near Grozny, at the Special Forces University, which accepts men from across Russia for general military instruction.

Some of the trainees lacked any combat experience. Others were veterans returning to Ukraine for their second or third tour — including former mercenaries from the Wagner militia, disbanded in 2023 after a short-lived mutiny against the Kremlin.

Six soldiers kneeling on cardboard to pray. They are all dressed in camouflage.

Some Wagner fighters, chafing at the idea of working for the Russian Defense Ministry, instead transferred whole units to the Chechen-trained forces, known as Akhmat battalions, intended in part to absorb fighters from outside the Russian Army. Wagner veterans were often first recruited from prison, including a lean man with a gold front tooth, identified only by his military call sign, “Jedi,” because of the potential for retribution.

“Go for your Fatherland? What kind of Fatherland? It kept me in prison all my life,” said Jedi, 39, a construction laborer who was convicted of robbery and fraud. In and out of jail since 14, he had six months left on a six-year sentence when he signed up.

“The volunteers go for the money,” he said. “I have yet to meet anyone here for the ideology.” He also wanted a clean slate, he said.

Fat signing bonuses plus payments of about $2,000 per month, at least double the average wage in Russia, have spurred recruitment.

The training near Grozny highlights the evolution of ethnic loyalties that is manifest in this war. Some of those now training there were last in Chechnya as young conscripts for the Russian Army, fighting against Chechens who were part of the separatist movement.

The participation of some Chechens represents another inversion of history: After hundreds of years of enmity with Russia, Chechens were deploying to Ukraine to fight Moscow’s war.

The separatist movement of the 1990s culminated in two brutal wars against Moscow that lasted intermittently for over a decade. The city of Grozny was flattened, and tens of thousands of Chechens died.

photo

Chechnya is ruled by the strongman Ramzan Kadyrov. Portraits of him and his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, can be seen all over Grozny.

Grozny, the capital, was entirely rebuilt after the Russian military flattened it during the Chechen wars.

The history of those wars is not commemorated the way other conflicts are, such as World War II.

A downtown photo exhibit chronicles both the devastation and reconstruction of the city.

Few traces of Grozny’s destruction remain. Today, new mosques and luxury boutiques stand amid the skyscrapers.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the authoritarian leader of Chechnya, has taken an aggressive stance toward Ukraine since Russia invaded the country in February 2022. Chechen forces have claimed an instrumental role in some key battles, including the siege of Mariupol early in the war.

But Mr. Kadyrov has faced accusations that he has refrained from sending his fighters full-bore into the fight, with Chechens dying in fewer numbers than soldiers from other minority areas. Sparing his fighters keeps intact his private militia, the core of the security forces that ensure his rule in Chechnya.

Instead, Mr. Kadyrov has tried to underscore his loyalty to President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by pouring resources into this military training center. The regimen consists of live fire exercises with artillery, some mining and demining instruction and first aid.

The various Akhmat battalions were named, like so much in Chechnya, after Mr. Kadyrov’s father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who switched sides to join Moscow in the separatist struggle and was then assassinated in 2004.

Russia has recruited troops for its war effort wherever it could find them, seeking to minimize the need for a draft. In 2022, it lifted an almost blanket ban on Chechens serving in the Russian military, fallout from the separatist movement.

Of the group being dispatched to Ukraine last fall from the tarmac in Grozny, many were in their 30s and 40s, and fewer than 10 were Chechens. Despite Jedi’s claims, money is not the sole motivation.

Some fled troubled domestic lives. Others wanted to escape daily drudgery. Some, of course, profess to be fighting out of patriotism. Many of the men agreed to talk on the condition that they be identified by only their first names or military call signs for fear of retribution.

Anatoly, 24, was among 10 men who volunteered together from a small farming village high in the mountains in the picturesque, south-central Altai region. “My father forced me to shovel snow, to work, to clear out the dung from the cows,” he said. “I ran away from this work to do something else. Every year is the same.” He admitted that the money was an incentive, too.

Another rural worker, a 45-year-old shepherd who uses the call sign “Masyanya,” traveled about 4,500 kilometers from the Republic of Khakassia for the training. “I’m going to defend my motherland, so the war doesn’t come here,” he said.

The contract with the Akhmat battalion lasts only four months, a big incentive when compared with the open-ended deployments for regular soldiers.

Last fall, Mr. Kadyrov formed a new unit, the Sheikh Mansour battalion, named after an 18th-century imam who fought against the Russian Empire. The soldiers are all Chechens or from the small, neighboring republics in the mountainous Caucasus region, and are mostly in their 20s. Chechens fighting for Ukraine against Russia named their battalion after Sheikh Mansour first, and now Mr. Kadyrov is trying to reclaim the name.

Turpal, 20, was working as a security guard for a large supermarket chain in Moscow when he got permission from his father to sign up for the new unit, saying that he wanted to fight against “those devils who are in Ukraine who want to bring their perverted ideas here.”

As he left to go back to the training center after a weekend visiting his parents, he hugged his mother and shook hands with his father. “Russia has been fighting for all its existence,” said Mayrali, Turpal’s father. “You can’t beat it. It is better for Chechnya to be with Russia than to be against Russia.”

Wagner veterans serve in the Sheikh Mansour battalion, too. A 35-year-old fighter who uses the call sign “Dikiy,” or “Wild,” said that he had served 18 months of a nearly 10-year sentence for murder when he signed up. He fought in Ukraine for 11 months, was wounded three times and still gets fierce headaches.

Back in Chechnya, he found the idea of working for $200 per month demoralizing, so he returned to the war. “I don’t know how to do anything else,” he said.

The Akhmat troops are better equipped than the regular army; unlike some regular Russian soldiers, they do not have to buy their own basic equipment.

Jedi said that when he first deployed with Wagner in Ukraine, some young men in the Russian Army came running up begging for supplies, for fuel and for bread. “In Akhmat, I don’t even wash my socks. I wear them, throw them away, wear them,” he said. “The same applies to underwear and bed linen. We have everything.”

Moscow subsidizes an estimated 80 percent of Chechnya’s budget, though it is unclear how much goes to military training.

At the airfield, before the battalion departed, a senior officer lined up the new soldiers to wish them good luck. “Are the fighters ready?” he shouted. “Yes sir,” they barked in unison, followed by the Muslim expression “Allahu akbar!” or “God is great!” plus the Chechen war cry, “Akhmat Sila!” or “Akhmat rules!”

Once they arrived in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, some of the men were assigned to maintain Russian control over Bakhmut, now an abandoned husk of a city after months of fierce fighting.

The streets are deserted, especially during the day, when Ukrainian drones roam overhead, hunting for targets. On foggy days, fighters can sometimes be glimpsed walking through the rubble.

Traffic rumbles to life at night, when the wounded from battles scattered around the Bakhmut region are evacuated. The roads are littered with burned cars and ambulances.

While the war grinds relentlessly above ground, the roar of artillery and exploding shells does not penetrate far beneath the surface, where the Akhmat forces have taken over a field hospital first set up by Wagner.

The Bakhmut region was once famous for its sparkling wine, and the hospital operates in the maze of underground tunnels where tens of thousands of bottles remain stored along the walls. (The prohibition on drinking it by both Wagner and Akhmat has been largely respected.) Once a tourist attraction, the old décor is still intact; dusty plaster statues of ancient gods loom over the wounded.

The caves are wide enough to accommodate at least two vans abreast, and several times a day, vehicles ferrying the wounded and the dead navigate the darkened, fog-shrouded labyrinth. Soldiers leap from the vehicles and quickly carry their often groaning comrades on stretchers to the makeshift stabilization point.

In Bakhmut, wounded Russian soldiers are treated at an underground hospital.

Though Russian forces captured the city last year, fighting in the vicinity remains fierce.

Medical personnel operate in rooms set up in a warren of tunnels that once served as a wine cellar.

The wounded are ferried on stretchers day and night as explosions boom in the distance.

Wounded soldiers wait to get treated at the underground hospital.

One of the surgeons, Bulya, 34, has worked for Wagner, mostly in Africa, since 2017. On trips to Moscow, he said, people there reacted to seeing him in his fatigues like “dirt under your fingernails,” but in Chechnya, he found more respect.

As losses pile up, Bulya said that he was eager for the Russian Army to make it to Kyiv. “I don’t need their negotiations,” he said using an expletive. “I hope that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin will do that, that we will go to the end. We will get there.”
