Tech stocks send New Zealand Superannuation Fund to record valuation

Madison Reidy

Chief executive of the Guardians of NZ Superannuation, Jo Townsend, has been in the seat for five months.

The New Zealand Superannuation Fund hit a record $76.6 billion valuation in the year to the end of June, an increase from the previous year’s $65.4b, largely due to impressive global share market returns.

“Declining inflation, positive macroeconomic data and optimism that generative AI technology will boost corporate profitability saw global markets perform exceptionally well,” the new chief executive of the Super Fund Jo Townsend wrote in its result announcement.

“Having global market indices so heavily dominated by such a small number of stocks, all of which are concentrated in one sector, is a very unusual situation.”

About half of the fund was passively invested in global and domestic stocks, with one quarter in fixed income and about another quarter in alternative investments such as private equity, venture capital, rural holdings, direct holdings, property and infrastructure.

Townsend said the latter was leading to positive returns.

“The fund is more than $17b better off than if we had implemented a strictly passive, index-linked approach.”

The 14.94% return for the financial year just ended was after costs, but before it paid $1.5b in tax.

It received $1.6b in government contributions in the financial year.

The fund made its first investment in 2003 and over that time had outperformed its benchmark of beating Treasury bills by 6.5% per year.

The Government was expected to start withdrawing money from the fund in 2035, to help pay for superannuation payments.

“We manage the portfolio in order to achieve the best long-term results for New Zealanders, in line with our intergenerational mandate,” Townsend said.

“Our equity exposure is highly diversified across sectors and geographies, and our active investment strategies are designed to take advantage of market ups and downs as they occur.”

The fund had around 40% holdings in Datacom, Kaingaroa Timberlands and insurer Fidelity Life, as well as interests in housing in Auckland’s Hobsonville and hotels and rural farmland nationwide.

It increased its stake in Brussels-based investment business Euroclear to above 8% in June, making it one of the largest single investments in its portfolio.

The fund has previously owned Kiwibank, Metlifecare and Z Energy.

A legislation change this year now allowed the fund to take a controlling stake in entities, however it had not done so yet.

Ajaz Patel reflects on life as New Zealand spinner: Hungry on subcontinent tours

Speaking to the press in greater noida ahead of the one-off test against afghanistan, new zealand spinner ajaz patel spoke about the challenges of being a spinner in the blackcaps team. ajaz has played only five tests since his historic 10-wicket haul in a test match in mumbai in december 2021..

Listen to Story

Ajaz Patel

  • Ajaz Patel spoke about lack of game time for New Zealand spinners in Tests
  • Ajaz picked a historic 10-wicket haul in Mumbai in December 2021
  • He has played only five Tests since that landmark outing

Ajaz Patel has played only five Tests since picking up a historic 10-wicket haul against India in Mumbai in 2021. All of them, barring one, have come in the subcontinent. The 35-year-old is not the BlackCaps' first-choice spinner at home despite having been successful in the subcontinent. While conceding that it's difficult to deal with the lack of opportunities, the senior spinner said the New Zealand spinners are hungrier when they play in favourable conditions.

Ajaz Patel, speaking to the press in Greater Noida ahead of the first Test against Afghanistan, said he has consistently tried to work on his skills and be ready for opportunities. Ajaz will compete for spots with the likes of Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra and Michael Bracewell as New Zealand look to dominate the one-off Test, which marks their extended stay in the subcontinent.

New Zealand and Afghanistan will meet in the one-off Test, starting September 9. The BlackCaps will then fly to Sri Lanka for a two-Test series from September 16 to 30. Tim Southee's men will then return to India to take on Rohit Sharma-led India in a 3-Test series from October 16 to November 5.

"If you ask all New Zealand spinners, it is difficult (lack of game time). Sometimes, obviously, you don't get as many opportunities at home because of our home conditions," Ajaz Patel said.

"But it breeds more hunger when you do come to conditions like this and you know conditions that are spin-friendly and you're quite hungry to get out there and play and, I guess, put your best foot forward and perform. But it's really important that you do prepare accordingly and prepare well," he added.

REMODELLED BY RUN-UP: PATEL

Ajaz Patel had become only the third bowler after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble when he picked up 10 wickets in an innings at the Wankhede Stadium in December 2021. Patel went wicketless at Lord's in his next Test and returned to wicket-taking ways against Pakistan in a two-Test series in Karachi in 2022-23. Ajaz was instrumental in helping New Zealand draw a series in Bangladesh last year, taking 14 wickets in 2 matches.

Ajaz said he has returned to the subcontinent with minor tweaks in his action as he eyes a consistent run over the course of the next six Tests.

"We are in a professional environment and for us it's really important to just go out there and continue to work on our game and keep improving and keep growing. After the 10 wickets, obviously, you're a little bit disappointed that you don't get as many opportunities but at the same time as a player, it is still about growing your game and its opportunities to develop and grow.

"Since my 10 wickets, I have kind of remodelled my run-up and look to grow myself and try and get better. So, it's always about improving and it's always about making sure that you're ready whenever that next opportunity comes and putting your hand up," he added.

New Zealand vs Bangladesh, 2nd T20I - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

bangladesh tour to new zealand

That's it from this game. The teams head to Auckland for the final game. Bangladesh had their chances but couldn't convert them today. Can they end the series on a high? Southee did say his side is keen to finish the summer on a high. See you all on Thursday for the third T20I. Take care!

Southee | New Zealand captain: : Unusual game with the rain and the shortened version. Been a great summer. We were privileged to have teams come here in these times. Pleasing to have a full summer and a good summer in these times is pleasing. They did put us under pressure. Glenn did a great job with the wet ball for an off-spinner. Just went on gut feel about the bowling changes. The slower balls were holding. Pleasing to get over the line. We will see how everyone pulls up. It's another opportunity to finish the summer on a great note and would love to end on the right note.

Mahmudullah | Bangladesh captain: There was some confusion, and the DLS kept changing, but that can happen in the game. First ten overs we were on track but we didn't finish well enough. I think Naim and Soumya gave us momentum, but Phillips and Sodhi were extremely good and we couldn't capitalize on their overs, and if we capitalize on those chances, we can go on to win. Taskin took a brilliant catch, and that gave us a lot of confidence, but it's important to finish well in the T20 format. Our top order has been great, and hopefully we take that positive into the next game.

Glenn Phillips | Man of the match: It was really about hitting hard down the ground with the wet outfield and running a lot of twos with the skid. Daryl's power is incredible so having someone like him makes the partnership really enjoyable. There's a moment with DLS, when you're thinking about going hard or saving wickets because it might affect the equation. There's always nerves about bowling, but I've been practicing, and ideally it would be my job to do, bowling to two lefties, and on another day it would be another person's job. Getting a wicket for someone like me, it's the best feeling in the world.

23:10 Local Time, 10:10 GMT, 15:40 IST: So a 2-0 lead for New Zealand and they have sealed the series, their ninth successive series win at home across formats. The New Zealand innings saw two rain breaks. The first didn't have a massive impact but the second was long enough to cut their innings short. Finn Allen looked very brisk in his short stay. Bangladesh did make inroads but Phllips and Mitchell shared an unbeaten 62-run stand to propel the hosts. Bangladesh started their chase and the game was paused in the second over because they weren't sure of the exact target for the visitors. Play resumed and Soumya Sarkar recorded a 25-ball fifty. Once he fell, none of his mates could take the baton forward and New Zealand chipped away at the wickets. Phillips came out really well bowling tight lines. Southee led from the front with 4-0-21-2.

Bennett to Mahedi Hasan, 1 run, fullish delivery on the leg stump, Mahedi drives it to long-on
