How to choose a college even if you can’t visit in person

There are hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States. How can you find out about them without paying for expensive trips to criss-cross the country? Post-pandemic, there are many ways you can find out whether a college is the right fit for you without having to hop on a plane. Here are nine ways to find out about a college, virtually!

1. Check out schools’ visit options

Many universities offer ways to talk with current students, meet counselors, and attend visit events online. SPU offers several different “virtual visit” experiences, from individual appointments to webinars on topics from financial aid to study abroad.

2. Tour campus — online!

Some colleges offer online tours of campus so you can get a feel for where things are located and what it would actually be like to make it your college home.

3. Ask all the questions

Now is a time when you might have a lot of questions. That is what admissions teams are here for! Whether you have questions about your application, financial aid, your major, or living on campus, start by contacting a school’s admissions team. At SPU, we can help find you answers.

4. Connect with professors and students

One of the best ways to find out if a school is right for you is to connect directly with 1) the professors you will learn from and 2) the students who have been in your shoes and made the choice to attend. To get connected with a professor in your field or a current student, contact SPU admissions.

5. Follow the schools you’re interested in on social media

This is often where you can see the “personality” of the university and look at what is happening in real time. You can see how the campus changes through the seasons, what events are happening, what students are accomplishing, and how the school is involved in the surrounding community.

6. Research your major program

If you’re certain about the general area you want to study, knowing more about a school’s majors can help you decide on a college. Also being aware of how popular or robust that specific major can be helpful as well. Seattle Pacific University, for example, has 71 majors to choose from, as well as 69 minors that allow you to explore other interests as well.

7. Consider your financial aid opportunities

Costs and scholarship opportunities vary for each school, depending on scholarships, in-state and out-of-state tuition, and other factors. Make sure you are aware of the loans, grants, and scholarships you qualify for at each college. In addition, make note of the different employment and work-study opportunities each school offers, or potential for nearby off-campus employment.

8. Think about location

A college’s location can have a big impact on your college experience, work opportunities, and career preparation. Is the college in a place you would enjoy living? Are there nearby companies and organizations where you could intern and grow in your career? Is it a potential hotspot for the field you’re interested in? Does the college have good connections to the community around it? SPU, for example, is located in Seattle, a leading city in business, technology, science, communication, and the arts. SPU students intern and network with employers from major global companies, often paving the way to full-time jobs.

9. Ask the question: “How will this school prepare me for my future?”

During the next four years of your life, you will grow, be challenged, and change. Think about the future you are working toward. Pray about it. How will the college you’re considering help prepare you for that future?

Moscow and the Palouse

Putin’s visit to Mongolia defies ICC warrant and tests neutral nation’s ‘third neighbor’ diplomacy

Vladimir Putin arrived in Mongolia on Sept. 2 , 2024, the first time the Russian president has visited an International Criminal Court (ICC) member country since the body issued a warrant for his arrest in 2023. While officially commemorating a Soviet-Mongolian military victory in World War II, Putin’s visit will test the small central Asian country’s policy of neutrality and the reach of international institutions.

Mongolia, a country of just 3.3 million people but with huge geographical territory, has long navigated its foreign policy in the shadow of Russia and China, with whom it has extensive historical and economic ties.

The country has attempted to bolster its independence from its more powerful neighbors by developing cordial relations with so-called third neighbor countries that include the United States, Germany, Japan and South Korea.

Through this approach, Mongolia has attempted to carve out a niche on the international stage, presenting itself as a neutral diplomatic meeting ground. Its annual Ulaanbaatar Dialogue , for example, is an opportunity for regional countries and other invited nations, including from the U.S. and EU member states, to discuss issues ranging from climate change to regional security and critical minerals .

As scholars of Mongolia and China , we attended the last such dialogue in June 2024 and witnessed Mongolia’s diplomatic efforts firsthand. It is a strategy that has worked for the country, but as events like Putin’s visit highlight, it can be a tough balancing act.

A closely watched visit

The timing of Putin’s trip is officially linked to history. It marks both the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Khalkhin Gol – in which joint Soviet-Mongolian forces defeated Japanese troops in World War II – and the founding of Mongolia’s national railway operator by the two countries 75 years ago.

Yet it is a third historical marker, the fifth anniversary of a comprehensive Russian-Mongolian strategic partnership , that highlights the visit’s significance from a modern geopolitical perspective.

Alongside its friendly relations with “third neighbors,” Mongolia has maintained a close relationship with Moscow despite Putin’s pariah status in much of the international community. Most recently, in July, Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh met with Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit .

Yet Putin’s visit now – the first he has made to the country since 2019 – poses a challenge for Mongolia as it seeks to balance its obligations and alliances with the Western-led international order , of which the ICC is a part, and its desire to remain friendly with its powerful neighbors.

Few things demonstrate this diplomatic tightrope walk like Mongolia’s membership in the ICC, which issued an arrest warrant for Putin over his alleged role in the unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia. Ukraine has urged Mongolia to detain Putin, citing the ICC’s founding treaty, the Rome Statute , which instructs member countries to take action if subjects to a court warrant enter their territory.

However, the ICC lacks an effective enforcement mechanism, and member states may also be exempt from carrying out arrests if doing so conflicts with certain treaty obligations or diplomatic immunity offered to another party.

Putin’s visit is expected to demonstrate how little can be done to rein in Moscow. Given the power imbalance between the states, Mongolia will likely show just how far it is willing to go to accommodate its powerful neighbor.

Mongolia’s ‘Third Neighbor’ policy

For almost 70 years, Mongolia was closely allied with the Soviet Union. But the fall of communism and subsequent geopolitical reorientation of the post-Cold War order forced the country to alter its economic and political relations.

In so doing, Mongolia became the only former communist state in Asia to adopt a democratic political system and open economy . It won favor with the U.S. and other Western countries who embraced the country as a role model for the region.

Putin’s expected trip is but the latest in a series of recent high-profile state visits as Mongolia seeks to maintain close relations with its neighbors, while also expanding partnerships with other nations.

So far in 2024, Mongolia has received heads of state or foreign ministers from the U.S., Slovenia, the Philippines, Belarus, the United Kingdom and Germany. In 2023, Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene traveled to the U.S. and met with Vice President Kamala Harris , and to China to see President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.

Both French President Emmanuel Macron and Pope Francis have recently visited Ulaanbaatar.

Mongolia can’t escape geography

While soft power efforts have won Ulaanbaatar goodwill and friends around the globe, they do not trump geography. Landlocked between Russia and China, Mongolia remains vulnerable to the whims of its two giant neighbors.

Mongolia is dependent on Russia for almost all its gasoline and diesel supplies and a substantial part of its electricity. Further, due to a legacy agreement from the Soviet era , Russia retains 50% ownership in several key infrastructure and mining projects in Mongolia. In particular, Russia is a partner in the Mongolian railway system , which has grown in importance as a trade corridor between China and Russia, and China and Europe.

Mongolia fears that its fuel supplies and transportation network will be disrupted if Russia prioritizes its own energy needs in the midst of war over the interests of its neighbors, however deep those ties may be.

Similarly, Mongolia is dependent on China for the majority of its non-energy imports, including food, consumer and industrial products. And China is the destination for 90% of Mongolia’s exports, primarily coal and copper.

Both Russia and China have used their economic and political muscle as leverage over Mongolia in the past due to perceived slights, such as China’s disruption of trade and a key loan in 2016 in protest of a visit to Mongolia by the Dalai Lama .

Mongolia and the new China-Russia alignment

Mongolia and other states in Central Asia face new challenges as Russia and China grow closer politically and economically .

Mongolia played the role of a buffer state between the Soviet Union and China for much of the 20th century, and counted on the rivalry between the two superpowers to gain and maintain its independent status.

But the growing friendship between China and Russia – highlighted by Putin and Xi’s declaration of a “no limits” partnership in February 2022, just days before Russian troops invaded Ukraine – raises the question whether China and Russia will begin to act in concert to gain even more leverage over Mongolia and other smaller states in region.

It is these geopolitical concerns that Ulaanbaatar may be fixated upon during Putin’s visit. Even as Mongolia has been affected by the sanctions placed on Russia, seeing transportation and business links disrupted , the country has steered clear of confrontations with Moscow in international settings.

Along with China, Mongolia routinely abstains from United Nations resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But in a sign that Mongolia remains committed to its third neighbor policy, it has also been careful not to violate the sanctions imposed on Russia by the U.S. and its allies.

While Mongolia recognizes the importance of Putin’s visit to maintain good ties and the flow of fuel to the country, it will also be concerned with how the visit and its anticipated non-enforcement of ICC sanctions will hurt the country’s standing with global institutions and powers outside the region.

In a shifting world order, Mongolia is working hard to maintain independence by emphasizing its role as a neutral state and friend to all. But visits such as Putin’s show how difficult that endeavor can be.

The most beautiful college in every state

• Universities across the US feature diverse architectural styles, from Gothic to Greek Revival.
• Some schools have fascinating histories that inspired their designs, like Florida's Flagler College.
• Others, like Berry College in Georgia, are surrounded by lush natural landscapes.

From botanical gardens to glass-and-marble libraries, college campuses across the US offer more than just a place to study and sleep.

Students travel from around the country — and, sometimes, the world — to attend these storied institutions, some of which date back centuries and have educated presidents, CEOs, and Pulitzer Prize winners.

While picking a school purely based on its looks isn't advised, a campus' architecture and amenities can contribute to its atmosphere and educational opportunities. Some history buffs even incorporate university tours into their itineraries when traveling the US.

We listed the most beautiful college campus in every state based on previously published rankings and official lists such as the National Registry of Historic Places, as well as by identifying historic features, one-of-a-kind architectural components, and access to breathtaking natural beauty.

ALABAMA: Spring Hill College in Mobile

Founded in 1830 by Mobile's first catholic bishop, Michael Portier, this southern institution — named one of the South's most beautiful campuses by Southern Living — was one of the first Catholic colleges established in the Southeast.

Several of its buildings have been recognized and made part of the National Register of Historic Places list.

The 381-acre liberal arts college, enveloped by pink azaleas, features a Greek Revival home that doubles as the commencement venue; an expansive green field at the steps of the library; and the St. Joseph Chapel, where rock legend Jimmy Buffett married his first wife, Margie Washichek, in 1969, according to the college.

Oh, and did we mention there's an 18-hole golf course on campus?

ALASKA: University of Alaska Fairbanks in Fairbanks

This public institution is spread over 2,250 acres, has five community and rural campuses across the state, and is one of the oldest universities in Alaska.

Its in-house museum, the Museum of the North, was designed in 2005 by award-winning architect Joan Soranno. It was part of  Architectural Digest's  2018 "most iconic buildings in America" list and has won several national awards since its opening in 2005.

The museum's design was inspired by Alaska's natural surroundings and meant to evoke "images of alpine ridges, glaciers, breakup on the Yukon River and the aurora," according to the University of Alaska .

ARIZONA: University of Arizona in Tucson

Established in 1857, the University of Arizona has since been home to many famous figures, from Kourtney Kardashian and Kristen Wiig to five-time NBA champion Steve Kerr .

Surrounded by the beautiful Santa Catalina mountains , the 380-acre campus features rows of red-bricked halls, towering palm trees lining its walkways, and a nationally recognized public garden that is home to many desert plants.

ARKANSAS: Hendrix College in Conway

Tucked away in suburban Conway, this liberal arts institution incorporates its natural surroundings into its campus architecture — think redbrick buildings, azalea-lined walkways, and old oak trees spread across the 175-acre campus.

Three of its academic buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places.

CALIFORNIA: University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley

Once a 2-acre site in Oakland and now a sprawling 178-acre campus, UC Berkeley 's college grounds have undergone several transformations over the years.

In 1863, upon acquiring a bigger space, college administrators worked with Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect of New York City's Central Park , to design a plan for the new campus. Then, by 1890, as enrollment increased, a competition was held to appoint a new architect, where French architect Emile Bénard won first place.

While Bénard presented his formal Beaux-Arts vision for the new campus, he declined to work as the supervising architect, and John Galen Howard — who won fourth place — was instead chosen to oversee the project.

Beyond its architectural feats, the university has produced many noteworthy figures, from Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak and actor Chris Pine to "Lizzie McGuire's" Adam Lamberg.

COLORADO: University of Colorado Boulder in Boulder

The University of Colorado Boulder 's campus underwent a transformation between 1918 and 1932 when American architect Charles Klauder — whose other notable works include Cornell University, Penn State University, and Princeton University — was hired to revamp the campus, reported Architectural Digest , which named it one of America's most beautiful college campuses.

Klauder added a touch of Tuscan Vernacular Revival style that came to be associated with the college and was also known as the University of Colorado style. The updated campus grounds featured multi-hued sandstone walls and red roofs.

Several other buildings were built in the Collegiate  Gothic style in the past , and some traces of this style can still be seen in old buildings across the campus.

In addition to its design marvels, the university is known for its affiliation with several prominent astronauts , such as Kalpana Chawla, Jim Voss, and Scott Carpenter.

CONNECTICUT: Yale University in New Haven

Elements of traditional Collegiate Gothic and modernist styles co-exist on this 261-acre campus. Modern structures, including architect Eero Saarinen's Ingalls Rink and the glass Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, stand out against the classical buildings.

Founded in 1701, Yale University is the third oldest in the country.

Since its inception, it has produced numerous prominent figures, including politicians, such as former US presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , to actors Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, and Lupita Nyong'o.

DELAWARE: University of Delaware in Newark

Lush manicured lawns and a mix of red-brick and Collegiate Gothic-style buildings make up much of the University of Delaware.

Established in 1743, the university is home to 21 NCAA division teams and 36 club sports. It also has a four-floor library — the Morris Library — stretching 6 acres and accommodating over 1,700 students.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are both alums of this university.

FLORIDA: Flagler College in St. Augustine

Flagler College's 47-acre campus — recognized by Southern Living as one of the most beautiful campuses in the South — operates out of the former Spanish Renaissance-style Ponce de León Hotel .

Not only do students get to call a National Historic Landmark their classroom, but they are also only a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean.

GEORGIA: Berry College in Rome

With its Gothic-style buildings across a 27,000-acre campus nestled within forests and fields and surrounded by mountains, it's easy to confuse Berry College for an English manor in Downton Abbey .

It has been recognized as one of the most beautiful college campuses by publications including Travel & Leisure and Southern Living.

Berry College has doubled as a filming site for movies such as "Remember the Titans" and "Sweet Home Alabama."

HAWAII: University of Hawaii at Mānoa

Located in the picturesque Mānoa Valley, this 320-acre university offers sweeping views of the volcanic rock and easy access to Waikiki Beach. As of fall 2022, more than 19,000 students were enrolled in the college, which is one of the largest and oldest of the 10 University of Hawaii campuses.

The university also classifies in Division 1 in the NCAA athletics rankings.

IDAHO: University of Idaho in Moscow

Various architectural styles are on display across the University of Idaho's vast campus, including the Collegiate Gothic style visible at the administration building.

Architect John E. Tourtellotte, who also worked on the Idaho State Capitol , helped design the administration building. In its north wing, the building has a U-shaped three-story, Gothic structure, at the entrance of which President Teddy Roosevelt famously gave a speech.

House where four University of Idaho students were killed will be demolished

The off-campus residence where  four University of Idaho students were found dead  in November will be demolished, the school said Friday.

The owner of the three-story King Street House where the  bodies of Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves  were found offered it to the university.

The offer was accepted by the university. The school decided to get rid of the structure, which is located blocks away from campus, University President Scott Green said in a statement.

The slayings rocked the small community of Moscow, where investigators grappled with what the town’s police chief would later describe as a “very complex” case.

“This is a healing step and removes the physical structure where the crime that shook our community was committed,” Green said. “Demolition also removes efforts to further sensationalize the crime scene.”

The university is also “evaluating options where students may be involved in the future development of the property.”

Scholarships in honor of three of the students have been established and a fourth is in the works, Green said. A plan to create a memorial is also being developed.

“We will never forget Xana, Ethan, Madison and Kaylee, and I will do everything in my power to protect their dignity and respect their memory,” Green said.

Three of the victims were roommates in the house, and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Chapin, was staying overnight, according to investigators.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was arrested  late last year in Pennsylvania and has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary.

The four charges of first-degree murder carry sentences that could include life in prison to the death penalty.

He is scheduled for a five-day preliminary hearing starting June 26.

At the time of the slayings, Kohberger was a  doctoral student , studying criminal justice and criminology at Washington State University in Pullman, a short drive over the state line from Moscow. A WSU official has said Kohberger is no longer enrolled.

Two students, two teachers killed in shooting at Georgia high school; 14-year-old charged as an adult

Two students and two teachers were killed and nine others wounded Wednesday in a school shooting an hour outside of Atlanta, authorities said.

One suspect, a 14-year-old student, was alive and taken into custody following the gunfire at Apalachee High School, Georgia Bureau of Investigation director Chris Hosey said at a news conference late Wednesday afternoon.

The victims of the shooting have been identified as Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39; Christina Irimie, 53.

Both Aspinwall and Irimie taught math, according to the school’s website. Aspinwall was also a defensive coordinator for the football team.

The suspect, identified as Colt Gray, surrendered to law enforcement immediately after being confronted, Hosey said. He was cooperating with authorities and will be charged with murder and handled as an adult, according to Hosey and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.

“He gave up, got on the ground and the deputy took him into custody,” Smith said.

Hosey said the suspect used an "AR platform-style weapon." He was in custody in the Barrow County Detention Center and will be booked Wednesday night, then transferred to Regional Youth Detention Center, Hosey said.

Smith said authorities do not yet know how the shooter obtained the firearm and how he brought it into the school.

The nine people injured include eight students and one teacher, the bureau said. All are expected to recover, Hosey said.

Smith said all nine who were taken to hospitals were injured by gunfire in some capacity. He lamented the “pure evil” and “hateful event.”

A motive was unclear. Smith said he was not aware whether the victims were targeted or whether there was a connection between the shooter and the victims.

"I don't know why it happened. I may not ever know. We may not ever know," Smith said.

The evidence does not support the involvement of any additional shooters, Hosey said. He said investigators were working to determine whether there were any associates involved in the shooting.

Investigators are also working to determine whether there are active threats against any other schools in Georgia, Hosey said.

Prior threat investigation

The sheriff's office in Jackson County, Georgia, had prior contact with the suspect in May 2023, when he was 13, in relation to a possible school shooting threat, the FBI office in Atlanta and the sheriff's office said in a joint statement Wednesday.

Jackson County is about 13 miles northeast of Barrow County.

That month, the FBI received “several anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting at an unidentified location and time” that included pictures of guns, the joint statement said.

Within 24 hours, the FBI determined the threats were coming from Georgia, and the sheriff's office located and interviewed the teenager and his father, the statement said.

The statement said the boy denied making the online threats and at the time, there was no probable cause for an arrest, but the county "alerted local schools for continued monitoring of the subject."

The father in the interview with law enforcement said he had hunting guns in their house but that his son didn’t have “unsupervised access” to them, the statement said.

Hosey said Wednesday night investigators are working with the FBI to determine whether that incident had any connection to Wednesday's shooting.

Active shooter call

The first call reporting an “active shooter” came in around 10:30 a.m., Smith said. Hosey said law enforcement officers and two school resource officers responded to the scene within minutes of being alerted to the shooting.

The call came in from a teacher who pressed buttons on an ID that notifies law enforcement of an "active situation at the school," Smith said Wednesday night. He said that all teachers have one of these IDs.

All campuses of Barrow County Schools, based in Winder, Georgia, went into a "soft lockdown" with most of the activity centered around Apalachee H.S. where police cars, fire trucks and ambulances had all converged.

Students could be seen being directed to the school's football stadium.

Eight people, including three with gunshot wounds, were taken to North Georgia Medical Center facilities in Barrow, Gainesville and Braselton, a hospital spokesperson said. Five people had panic attack symptoms.

Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta confirmed that it was treating one gunshot victim.

The daughter of one of the injured victims, golf coach David Phenix, said her father’s hip was shattered after he was struck in the foot and hip. In a Facebook post, she said he was in stable condition after surgery.

Gov. Brian Kemp said in statement that he and his family were "heartbroken" by the shooting.

"We continue to work closely with local, state, and federal partners to make any and all resources available to help this community on this incredibly difficult day and in the days to come," he said.

President Joe Biden said he was mourning those who were killed, as he pushed Congress to pass gun safety legislation.

“What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart,” Biden said in a statement.

“Students across the country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write,” he added. “We cannot continue to accept this as normal.”  

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said he was “devastated” for the affected families and said the Justice Department was ready to provide support. 

School has been in session at Apalachee High School since Aug. 1 .

Schools will be closed for the rest of the week, Barrow County Schools Superintendent Dallas LeDuff said.

Apalachee High is Barrow County’s second high school, according to its website, and opened in 2000.
