OVERVIEW – MANTA POINT NUSA PENIDA

Where to book a manta point snorkeling tour.

There are a couple of options to book a Manta Ray Snorkeling Nusa Penida tour which I have listed below.

From Nusa Penida Island, boat tours operate out of Toya Pakeh Bay to Manta Bay Nusa Penida on a daily basis.

You can head down to one of the many tourist offices in Toya Pakeh to organize your Nusa Penida manta snorkeling trip.

The cost of a Nusa Penida Manta Point snorkeling tour is between 250,000 and 350,000 IDR.

If you happen to be in Bali and want to go snorkeling on Nusa Penida, there is one tour that I can highly recommend which is a full-day trip from Bali.

The Swim with Mantas + Land Tour From Bali is the most top-rated tour with great reviews and thousands of bookings.

This tour includes hassle-free pick-up and drop-off from your hotel, return boat transfers from Bali and an English-speaking guide.

You will visit such spots as Nusa Penida Manta Point, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, Toyapakeh Wall, and more!

MY EXPERIENCE AT NUSA PENIDA MANTA POINT

Our Manta snorkeling Nusa Penida tour began at 7:30 am when we met with our boat and tour guide at Toyapakeh Bay.

Our guide provided everyone with snorkeling gear and fins before jumping on board the boat.

We cruised on the boat for around 30 minutes across crystal-clear waters until we arrived at the Manta Bay Nusa Penida snorkeling spot.

Within seconds of arriving, our snorkeling guide started yelling out “manta, manta, manta.” We spotted a manta ray cruising along the surface of the water and we were quick to jump in with mask, snorkel, and fins!

These majestic creatures are absolutely incredible! They glide effortlessly through the ocean and are really friendly to swim with.

The manta rays at Nusa Penida Manta Point can be quite intimidating to begin with due to their body size of up to 5 meters, though you will soon realize they are harmless, humble giants.

I counted roughly 8 to 10 different mantas during our Nusa Penida manta snorkeling experience, which is more than usual. I think it is safe to say we got very lucky!

CRYSTAL BAY BEACH

Our tour guide was really flexible with our group and was happy to do whatever we requested on the Manta Point snorkeling Nusa Penida tour.

So we snorkeled for at least 2 hours before making our way around to Crystal Bay on the boat. The reef here is super colorful and many species of fish can be seen.

Palm trees in the bay line the beach on a golden stretch of sand, so we asked our guide if we could go explore and he was more than happy to drop us at the beach.

We spotted a large group of locals who were gathered under some temporary tarps hung between the trees. We wandered over to see what was going on and discovered a traditional cockfighting tournament.

Big money was getting thrown around the arena, betting for one rooster to win the battle. It wasn’t my scene by any means and I couldn’t stand watching it for long.

Small warungs line the beach at Crystal Bay if you want to grab a fresh coconut to sip on under the shade of the palms.

Crystal Bay Beach is also an epic location to get those ‘tropical island vibe’ shots.

TOYAPAKEH WALL SNORKELING SITE

After a short stop at Crystal Bay, the Manta Point snorkeling tour continues to Toyapakeh Wall which is another popular diving and snorkeling site here on Nusa Penida Island.

Toyapakeh Wall is a diverse marine ecosystem with an abundance of corals and tropical fish that you can see while drifting in the current along the surface.

Make sure you save enough battery on your cameras for this spot.

From here, the boat will drop you back to Toya Pakeh which concludes the Manta Ray Snorkeling Nusa Penida Tour.

Snorkeling With Manta Rays At Manta Point On Nusa Penida, Bali

Snorkeling with Manta Rays at Manta Point on Nusa Penida is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nusa Penida is an island just off the coast of mainland Bali, which takes just 35 minutes to reach by fast-boat. The Manta Rays are majestic and very friendly. With a wingspan of 5m, these gentle giants cruise around you while you snorkel amongst them. This Nusa Penida Manta Ray Snorkel Tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel in Bali and all transport and tickets included.

MANTA RAY SNORKELING TOUR AVAILABILITY

You can use this calendar below to see the availability of tours. It’s important to book this tour in advance during high season as it can be a very popular activity on Nusa Penida and they try and limit the number of boats in the water.

BOOK A MANTA RAY SNORKELING TOUR FROM NUSA PENIDA

You can book a tour locally if you are already on Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. To book a tour from Nusa Penida just head down to Crystal Bay and find a vendor as that is where you will launch off from. To book a tour on Lembongan, head down into the main street and you will find many tour offices who all sell the tour at the same price more or less.

However, it can often be less challenging and more convenient to book online with pick-up included if you aren’t cruising on your own motorbike. Therefore, I suggest this tour: Snorkeling with Manta Rays from Nusa Penida or Snorkeling with Manta Rays from Nusa Lembongan . These tours cost less than the tour I mentioned earlier that departs from Bali as you don’t need the speed boat and transfers on mainland Bali.

MY EXPERIENCE SNORKELING WITH MANTA RAYS AT MANTA POINT

I have experienced both the tour from Nusa Penida and the tour from Nusa Lembongan and both were very relaxing and great experiences. Our boat drove us the 20 minutes to Manta Point as we took in the beautiful coastline of Nusa Penida. Once we arrived at Manta Point, the captain looked for any Manta Rays and they are very good at spotting them before you even have your snorkel ready.

When we jumped into the water we were immediately staring face to face with a giant Manta Ray, which is one of the most majestic creatures of the ocean. I didn’t expect it at all, I thought we would be waiting around for the More than five Manta Rays playfully looped around the bay, entertaining the group of snorkelers. The Manta Rays always seem playful and loop back again and again unlike turtles or fish, which often swim away at the sight of humans. The Manta Rays will often actually head straight for you and then dart off to the side at the last minute.

manta ray, manta ray bali, manta bay snorkeling, manta bay bali, manta bay nusa penida, manta bay nusa lembongan,

The Giant Manta Ray isn’t dangerous but it is still intimidating when a 5-meter creature swims straight at you before ducking away at the last moment.

We hung out in the bay until we could hardly swim anymore. The experience was unreal. I think this was even better than swimming with Whale Sharks in the Philippines .

Things to know about Manta Point

Manta Point in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, is a well-known dive spot famous for the manta rays that often frequent its waters. It is located on the southern side of Nusa Penida, an island off the coast of Bali.

The site is characterized by its relatively shallow waters, with the depth varying between 7 to 20 meters. This makes it suitable for both beginner and experienced divers. The water clarity can change depending on the time of year and the weather conditions, but it’s usually quite good.

a person standing on top of a rock next to the ocean.

The main draw of Manta Point is, of course, the manta rays. These beautiful and majestic creatures often visit the area to feed on the plankton that accumulates near the surface. Divers can see them gliding gracefully in the water, and it’s a sight that leaves many in awe. The size of the mantas can reach up to 7 meters from wingtip to wingtip.

a manta ray swimming in the ocean.

Other marine life can also be seen in Manta Point, including various species of fish, turtles, and occasionally reef sharks. However, it’s worth noting that the currents can be quite strong, so it’s always advisable to dive with an experienced guide.

In addition to diving, snorkeling is also popular at Manta Point, as the mantas often swim close to the surface. This makes it an accessible location for those who are not divers but still wish to see these magnificent animals.

Best time of year to visit Manta Point on Nusa Penida

Manta Point in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, is a year-round dive site. You can visit at any time of the year and still have a chance to see the manta rays.

However, there are some considerations depending on the time of the year. The water temperature in Nusa Penida can vary, being cooler from July to October, around 22-26 degrees Celsius (72-79 degrees Fahrenheit), and warmer from November to June, around 27-30 degrees Celsius (81-86 degrees Fahrenheit).

The visibility can be a bit lower during the rainy season, which typically lasts from December to March. Although manta rays can still be seen during this period, rough seas might make the boat ride to the dive site more challenging, and the water conditions can also be less predictable.

The dry season, from April to November, often offers better conditions with calmer seas and better visibility. The highest chance to encounter manta rays is typically from April to May and from September to November, but these graceful creatures are known to frequent Manta Point throughout the year.

MANTA POINT VIEWPOINT

As you finish up at Angel’s Billabong it is common to walk around the corner to Broken Beach . The walk only takes 5 minutes but halfway through the journey is an archway made of trees. When you reach this archway don’t go through immediately! Head up the hill towards the coast on your right and look down into the ocean. This is where the Giant Manta Rays hang out.

We sat on the cliffs watching the Mantas cruise around and surface time and time again. It was a pretty awesome discovery and we have aptly named the cliff, ‘ Manta Point Viewpoint’ .

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT GIANT MANTA RAYS

  • Scientific Name: The scientific name of the giant manta ray is Mobula birostris. It was previously classified as Manta birostris.
  • Size: Giant manta rays are the largest species of rays, with a wingspan that can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet). Despite their size, they are graceful swimmers.
  • Weight: These creatures can weigh up to 3,000 kilograms (approximately 6,600 pounds).
  • Diet: Manta rays are filter feeders. They eat large quantities of zooplankton in the form of shrimp, krill, and planktonic crabs.
  • Habitat: Manta rays inhabit the tropical, subtropical, and temperate oceans around the world. They are typically found near the surface or mid-water, but can dive to depths of at least 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) when necessary.
  • Social Behaviour: Giant manta rays are known for their curiosity and will often interact with divers. They are generally solitary creatures but can be found in groups, particularly in areas with abundant food or at cleaning stations where small fish remove parasites from their bodies.
  • Reproduction: Manta rays have a low reproduction rate, with females giving birth to only one pup every two to three years after a gestation period of around a year. This slow reproduction rate makes them particularly vulnerable to threats like overfishing.
  • Longevity: The lifespan of a giant manta ray is believed to be about 20 to 25 years, but this could be an underestimate as many aspects of their lives remain a mystery.
  • Threats and Conservation: Major threats to giant manta rays include overfishing, pollution, habitat loss, and entanglement in fishing gear. They are currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • Intelligence: Manta rays are believed to be among the most intelligent of all fish. They have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any fish, and they have been observed exhibiting complex behaviors such as coordinated and cooperative feeding, recognition of self in mirrors, and even social interactions.

How to get to the Nusa Islands

There are three main options to get to Nusa Penida depending on your budget and how many logistics you want to manage. Here are the three options with the cheapest first:

  • Book your ticket:   Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Lembongan – Book a regular ferry that leaves from Sanur to Nusa Penida on the reliable website 12go . You then need to moped or taxi across to Nusa Penida via another ferry/boat.
  • Book a fast boat: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option is great as you go direct from Bali to Penida without having to stop in Lembongan. This option is only slightly more expensive than stopping in Lembongan. This is my favorite option of the three and can be booked on Klook .
  • Book a fast boat with hotel pick-up: Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida – This option includes a fast boat from Sanur (Bali) to Nusa Penida but also includes pick-up from your hotel in Bali in a van. This option from GetYourGuide is a bit more expensive but takes all the hassle out of the transit from Bali to Nusa Penida.

Complete 2023 Guide to Manta Point, Nusa Penida

  • Post published: June 20, 2023
  • Post category: Bali / Destinations
  • Reading time: 25 mins read

If you are a diving or snorkeling enthusiast, then Manta Point in Nusa Penida should be at the top of your list of must-visit spots. At this incredible spot you will get to enjoy an amazing underwater experience that is hard to find anywhere in the world. In this complete guide, I will tell you everything you need to know about visiting Manta Point.

Manta Point in Nusa Penida is a world-renowned diving location that is popular with tourists from all over the globe because of the Manta Rays that live here all around the year. Nusa Penida is already home to some of the coolest places in Bali like Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong but Manta Point has to be my favorite place on this island.

Manta Rays in Manta Point Nusa Penida

Are Manta Bay and Manta Point the Same?

Manta Bay is the shallow bay in front of Angel’s Billabong. This is where most tour companies will take you on a snorkeling expedition. There are lots of Manta Rays here but also lots of other boats and tourists at the same time.

Manta Point is further down the coast, you have to go 20 more minutes past Manta Bay to reach Manta Point. The ocean here is between 8 meters to 20 meters and it’s a great place even for beginner divers. There is also a deeper part of the dive where some divers have even seen the elusive Mola Mola fish.

How to Get to Nusa Penida

From Sanur Beach Harbor in Bali, a fast boat is available to take you to Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Bali from where you can take a boat or ferry. The fast boats take 45 minutes and the slower ones take 1 hour to reach the Toka Pakeh harbor in Nusa Penida. There are two other ports in Nusa Penida but they are even further away towards the north east of the island.

Best Time to Visit

Nusa Penida is a year-round destination for diving and snorkeling. However, the best time to visit is during the dry season a couple weeks after the last rains. Rains bring a lot of trash to the shores of Bali and it’s disgusting to get into the ocean during that time. The water also becomes very murky and you can’t see well at all.

During the rainy season, snorkeling and diving tours become very unpredictable because as soon as the conditions worsen the tour has to be canceled. Therefore the best time to visit is during the dry season.

Which Times to Avoid

If possible, avoid traveling to Manta Point Nusa Penida in March after the rains. During this time, trash and debris from the coast wash up into the sea, making it hazardous for divers and swimmers.

How Much Does Diving and Snorkeling at Manta Point Cost?

The cost of diving or snorkeling at Manta Point Nusa Penida varies depending on the tour operator and where you are departing from. Tours from Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are much cheaper than tours from Bali.

Book a Snorkel Tour for Manta Bay

If you are not a great swimmer or prefer to stay near the surface of the water, you can book a snorkel tour to Manta Bay to get a glimpse of the incredible marine life.

Book Tour From Bali

If you are staying on Bali and want a day trip to swim with the Manta then this Manta Ray Snorkeling Tour is great for a full day trip. The tour picks you up from your hotel in Bali and then you take a fast boat to Nusa Penida. At Nusa Penida you board the boat that will take you to the Manta Bay, Crystal Bay and Mangrove Point. You will get to snorkel and 3 different spots, have lunch and do a kayak tour of Mangrove Point.

Book Tour From Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan

If you are staying on either of the islands then the tour companies will be able to pick you up from your hotel for the tour. On Nusa Penida the tours start from Crystal Bay and you can find vendors in the bay to take you out for the day. I would not recommend this though because most of the time there is no availability. You can use the Snorkeling Day Trip from Nusa Lembongan or 3 Spot Snorkeling Tour from Nusa Penida to book the tours in advance.

Book a Dive Tour for Manta Point

For more experienced swimmers and divers, booking a diving tour to Manta Point offers an unforgettable underwater experience. While diving you can see some sea life that you wouldn’t see on a snorkeling tour. Some of my favorite ones are the Mola Mola, Blue Spotted Rays, Blue Triggerfish, Barracudas and reef sharks.

There are 8 dive sites on Nusa Penida on the west side of the island near Manta Point.

  • Ceningan Wall

Most dive companies are happy to take you on 3 dives per day to whichever dive sites you want. There are a lot of reputable companies on Nusa Penida. Some of the ones with good reviews I recommend are the ones below. Please don’t go diving with any cheap companies because diving is a dangerous sport and you do not want faulty equipment failing at 20 meters below the surface.

What to Expect at Manta Point

I was staying on Nusa Penida so we started off from Crystal Bay in one of the boats. I had already been diving in Tulamben the week before so I wanted to keep it chill and just do a snorkeling tour on the island.

Start of tour

We started pretty early at 8am from the bay. The sun was already in the sky by that time. The boat first went up to a snorkeling spot near Nusa Lembongan where we jumped down into the boat to try and spot any Mantas or sharks. I did not spot any here but I did see a turtle that was merrily swimming away on its own. I tried very hard to catch it but that thing was very fast even with the current.

Manta Bay snorkeling

Next we went down and passed Crystal Bay to head towards Manta Bay. We passed the famous Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach on our left while heading south. The cliffs on the left were very impressive. At Manta Bay there were a lot of boats and snorkelers. We could immediately see at least 4 Manta Rays from our boat. I got down into the water and one of the closer ones made a beeline as if to investigate us. It got very close before veering off at the last second. It was one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. Since it was very crowded at Manta Bay we decided to leave early and go to Manta Point.

Manta Point snorkeling

Manta Point was further down south and it took us 30 minutes to get there by boat. There were only 2 other diving boats here so we were very happy. I got off the boat and started searching for Mantas and in about 2 minutes I saw two huge Mantas come up and swim near us. We stayed there for 30 minutes and so did the Mantas. I am sure there must have been others nearby too but I was so happy with my two that I stayed with them the whole time. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Things to Carry

I always carry my sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a GoPro, and a change of clothes for any snorkeling trip. After having read that there are jellyfish that can sting very bad in Manta Bay so I wore a long sleeve shirt and pants rash guard I use while surfing. I got stung by the phytoplankton in Maldives while snorkeling with Whale Sharks so I knew not to swim in just my bikini again.

Is It Worth Visiting Manta Point Nusa Penida in 2023?

Manta Point Nusa Penida is one of the most beautiful diving and snorkeling locations in the world. It’s definitely worth visiting in 2023, especially during the peak season, which is between July and September.

Best Nusa Penida Tours

Snorkel with Manta Rays Tour

Nusa Penida has some of the most amazing snorkeling with Manta Rays. Tours go to Manta Bay and Crystal Bay to swim with manta rays that come right up to you. Manta Rays are huge 5 meter long marine animals that gently glide along in the water. Swimming with them is one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

If you are in Bali you can do the manta ray tour from Bali on a speedboat or you can do the manta rays tour from Nusa Penida if you are already on the island.

Manta Point FAQs

Why are there so many Manta Rays here?

Manta Rays are attracted to Manta Point because it is a good environment for cleaning and mating. The site is rich in plankton and small fish that Manta Rays feed on.

What is the water temperature at Manta Point?

The water temperature at Manta Point is around 25 degrees Celsius, which is great for both snorkeling and diving. If you are going deeper you might want to wear a wetsuit because the water gets colder due to a cold current. The cold current is what attracts the Mola Mola.

How deep is Manta Point?

The depth of Manta Point ranges from 4 meters to 20 meters. There is a drop off which goes down to 40 meters.

Do you need a wetsuit for Nusa Penida?

A wetsuit is a good idea when diving at Manta Point because the water temperature can get chilly, especially at greater depths.

Is it better to snorkel or dive?

It’s all a matter of preference. If you are a seasoned diver, then diving would be an incredible experience. But snorkeling here is also exceptional.

What other ocean life can you see at Nusa Penida?

Apart from the magnificent Manta Rays, divers and snorkelers can spot other creatures such as reef sharks, turtles, Eagle Rays, Mola Molas, Blue Spotted Rays etc.

Manta Snorkeling Nusa Penida Bali – When? Where? How Much?

' src=

The manta snorkeling in Nusa Penida was the part of our Bali holiday that we were the most excited about. A close encounter with these majestic creatures was the highlight of our trip, and now we share all the information you need to know about these giant creatures, including when, where, and how you can swim with them when visiting the Nusa Islands.

Nusa Penida Manta Snorkeling Overview:

  • Manta rays can be seen year-round in Nusa Penida
  • The best time to swim with them is the dry season between May and October
  • The site where you can swim with them is called Manta Bay; it is located on the west side of the island
  • You can visit this spot by joining a manta snorkeling tour
  • Excursions can be booked locally or online
  • Local tours depart from Crystal Bay and Toya Pakeh Habor
  • Manta snorkeling day trips are also available from Bali and Nusa Lembongan
  • Swimming with manta rays is not dangerous, however, you need to keep a safe distance from them
  • This experience is recommended for advanced snorkelers, as the currents can be strong

Best Time To Go Manta Snorkeling In Nusa Penida

The good news is that there is no specific manta season in Bali. They are present all year round, thanks to the fact that the waters around Bali and the Nusa Islands enjoy the benefits of the Indonesian Throughflow. It is technically a massive volume of water (stream) that runs around the Indonesian archipelago from Timor to Bali.

feeding manta ray

This flow transfers the water from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean. It is the largest movement of water anywhere on the planet, meaning that the strait between Bali and Lombok enjoys fresh, nutrient-rich currents in all seasons.

Understanding this phenomenon explains why Bali snorkeling spots feature such vibrant marine life. And also, this is the reason why manta rays can be spotted all year round here!

Manta Ray Nusa Penida

Although it is possible to encounter these graceful creatures year-round, you should avoid coming in the wet season, between December and March, due to rough seas. The best time for manta snorkeling in Bali is the dry season between May and October, when you have the highest chance of bright sunshine and calm water. Locals say manta rays are the most active in the mornings, so most tours are scheduled accordingly.

Where Can You See Manta Rays In Nusa Penida?

The island’s southern coast is the best place to see manta rays in Nusa Penida. There are three specific points where they are regularly seen: Manta Bay, Manta Point, and Manta Viewpoint. The first one is a snorkeling spot, the second is a diving site, while the third one, as its name shows, is a viewpoint where you can observe them from the cliffs.

Sometimes, they swim into Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay, too, which are two of the most popular snorkeling beaches in Nusa Penida . You can encounter them at these places, but it is rare.

Manta Bay is a relatively shallow bay on the west side of Nusa Penida. Here, manta rays swim near the surface and feed on the plankton that currents bring into the area. This is the place where most manta snorkeling trips will take you.

Mantas in Manta Bay - Bali

Tour organizers suggest visiting Manta Bay in the morning to see the most mantas. Therefore, it can get super crowded in the early hours of the day.

We think you should not skip the idea of going out for an afternoon trip as we saw many mantas later in the day too; you might be lucky to experience swimming with manta without the crowds!

Manta Point

Manta Point is one of the most southern dive spots on the island, surrounded by high cliffs. The water is approx. 15 meters (50 ft) deep here with tricky currents and often rough seas; therefore, this place is more suitable for scuba diving than snorkeling. This is a manta cleaning station where these majestic creatures come to rest above the shallower reef section while getting cleaned by smaller fish.

Manta Viewpoint

You don’t necessarily need to get wet to encounter these giant creatures; you can see them from land, too! Keep your eyes open while hiking or visiting viewpoints because you can often spot them when they swim near the surface.

Manta place from manta view point

The official Manta Viewpoint is on the left side of Broken Beach, the cliffs over Manta Bay. Generally, you have a chance to see them from all the viewpoints of the southern coastline. For example, we saw mantas from the cliffs at Kelingking Beach too!

Nusa Penida Manta Snorkeling Tours – Options And Prices

Whether you stay in mainland Bali, on Nusa Lembongan (the most popular Nusa Island), or Nusa Penida, several organizers offer manta ray snorkel tours locally and online.

The price depends on where you will start the tour: the most expensive ones are of course the manta tours from Bali mainland, while the cheapest option is to sign up for one locally when you are in Penida. Below, we collected the most important information on each version with approximate prices. However, note that prices are just approximated, except for the online tour prices.

Manta Ray Snorkeling From Bali

Manta snorkeling trips from Bali are usually full-day tours and stop not only in Manta Bay but also at some other Nuda Penida snorkeling sites. This is the most expensive and tiring option since you need to spend the whole on the boat.

Whole-day manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trips from Bali are available from 1.000.000 IDR (70 USD) with hotel pick-up, drop-off from most South Bali areas, soft drinks and lunch included.

Save time and pre-book it online, this trip has very good reviews:

If your schedule is tight, but you don’t want to miss swimming with manta rays, a day trip from Bali could be a good choice, but if your vacation itinerary is flexible, consider spending a few days on the island! There are so many things to do and attractions on the island so I’m sure you won’t regret it if you come for a longer time!

Nusa Penida Manta Bay Snorkel Tour

If you stay on the island, you can easily book a manta snorkeling trip locally. You can ask your hotel staff to sign you up for one or go to Crystal Bay or Toya Pakeh Harbor and find a seller. These are the two main places where trips depart from and arrive.

boats in Toyapakeh harbour Nusa Penida

A 2 hours-long snorkel trip with two stops costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR (10-13 USD), while expect to pay between 300.000-400.000 IDR (20-25 USD) for a half-day trip with four-five stops included. Don’t be shy and try to haggle, you may get better a deal.

Should you prefer to book it online, we recommend this tour:

Tip: Organized tours usually provide gear, but we recommend having your own snorkel equipment .

Manta Trip From Nusa Lembongan

Should you stay on the nearby Lembongan Island, you can choose a half-day trip that includes manta snorkeling in Manta Bay plus one or two additional stops. This can be Crystal Bay or Gamat Bay in Nusa Penida, the Mangrove Point in Nusa Lembongan, or the Buddha Temple next to Nusa Ceningan, depending on the sea conditions and your tour provider.

Snorkelers swimming near a boat in Bali

Generally, locals use their traditional boats for such tours and take a maximum of 6-10 people. Trips usually start around 8 am and cost approximately 250.000-300.000 IDR (15-20 USD).

If you prefer to book it online, check out this Nusa Penida Snorkeling Day Trip from Lembongan:

Swimming With Manta Rays In Bali Nusa Penida – How To Prepare

Don’t be afraid of the mantas.

Knowing that manta rays can grow up to 23 ft (7 m) and weigh about 6600 lbs (3000 kg) makes it easy to understand why many people think they are dangerous. But don’t worry; despite their massive size, manta rays are completely harmless to humans.

Bali manta rays are Reef Manta species ( Manta alfredi ) that are the second-largest ray species after Oceanic Manta with an average size of 9.8-11.5 ft (3-3.5 m). They are filter feeders, which means they feed on plankton, crustaceans, and smaller fish, and have small, non-sharp teeth only that they use to chew their food.

Manta alfredi aerial photo

Mantas don’t have poisonous tail stingers, so swimming with manta rays is completely safe. They have the largest brains of all bony fish and enjoy interacting with humans, so it is not a surprise that snorkelers and divers often describe their manta snorkeling as their best experience.

Don’t Chase And Touch The Animals

Even if manta rays are not dangerous, you should not chase or touch them. First, you can damage their special mucus layer by touching them; this coating protects them from bacteria and viruses. Second, chasing them scares them away. Try to stay relaxed without splashing with your fins too much, so they might swim close to you.

Be Prepared For Strong Currents

I feel it important to draw attention to the dangers of the currents around the Nusa Islands. The ocean has great power and we need to take precautions when hitting the water (read our snorkeling safety tips if you haven’t had it yet).

These extreme currents mean you must be extra careful if you go swimming, diving or snorkeling here, especially if you are a beginner. The currents are probably the strongest I’ve ever experienced while snorkeling and can change rapidly.

Rough sea Nusa Islands Bali

After our tour, we agreed that our manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was like swimming in a washing machine because of the rough sea and strong currents. Therefore, while swimming with the mantas, don’t forget to watch out for the waves, keep a safe distance from the boats around, and stay away from the cliffs!

Never swim far from the shore, and always use good snorkel fins to help you return to the beach! If you are caught by a current and can’t swim against it, wave to nearby boats and ask for help. I rarely suggest signing up for organized trips over snorkeling from shore, but this is the safest you can do in Nusa Penida!

Know That There Can Be Debris In The Water

I wanted to dedicate a single section to the plastic problem. You have probably also seen videos of a manta ray swimming through massive plastic in Nusa Penida. I also watched it and felt so sorry for these magical creatures because I know how polluted the ocean is.

Plastic is a real problem in Indonesia, and so it is in the Nusa Islands. Many people complain about the rubbish after snorkeling in Manta Bay. We were lucky because there was no (very little) plastic on the days we went there, but we know it was pure luck and the plastic problem exists.

 plastic in the sea

You find crystal clear water one day and a huge amount of debris the next; the explanation for these fast-changing conditions is the Indonesian Throughflow phenomenon . As mentioned, there are powerful currents around the island transferring water through the whole Indo-Pacific area, so nobody can predict what and when they will wash up onshore.

In most parts of Indonesia, there is no waste management. People don’t know what to do with plastic waste or how to recycle it. Usually, they collect and burn it (which is one of the worst things they can do since burning plastic releases toxins in the air), or it ends up in the sea after rain.

Hopefully, governments will soon realize the demand for urgent changes and develop a waste management strategy. But stopping the pollution is everyone’s responsibility. Do your best and minimize the impact on nature! Don’t litter and reduce the amount of plastic you use !

The Site Can Be Crowded

Swimming with manta rays in Nusa Penida has become popular in recent years. The number of boats and tourists visiting the bay is rapidly increasing, so you might end up being surrounded by tens of boats and hundreds of people while in the bay.

Unfortunately, there is no limit on the number of boats and visitors at the moment, so you need to be very careful when in the water. Try staying with your group and keep your distance from the boats.

Manta ray swims through a group of snorkelers

Sightings Are Not Guaranteed

Manta rays are present in the area year-round, but you will never be guaranteed to see them. They are wild animals that migrate freely wherever they feel like following the plankton.

Boat captions always do their best to find them for you; they keep contact with other boats and inform each other about signings, so you may stop at a different spot than you originally wanted. Even if you don’t find them, don’t be sad; come back another day!

Our Manta Trip Experience – Personal Thoughts

As I mentioned in the introduction, the manta snorkeling Nusa Penida trip was the one we waited for the most in Bali. We came to the island with the decision that we wouldn’t leave until we managed to swim with manta rays, but we were not 100% happy after the experience.

Don’t get me wrong, of course, we felt extremely lucky to be able to swim with these peaceful creatures! But seeing that there is no restriction on the number of boats and snorkelers in Manta Bay makes us worried.

There is no designated area where boats should stop, leaving space for the mantas, meaning they always chase them. Moreover, the leaking oil from the boat engines makes the water that mantas filter even more polluted.

Snorkeler with manta rays

It was also sad to see how disrespectful some people are and keep touching the mantas. I know there is little we can do to change this situation except warn people who do so, but we hope that authorities will realize that they have to act to protect manta rays and preserve their feeding grounds.

This, of course, does not mean that it was a bad experience; we made unforgettable memories while swimming among these unique creatures, but the experience could have been improved if both visitors and locals practiced responsible snorkeling techniques .

When looking for a manta snorkeling trip, try to find an eco-tour operator that takes care of the environment! Educate your environment about respecting marine life and creatures. Take only pictures and leave a small footprint!

Thank u for this article and for dedicating a section to the environmental factors and swimming etiquette as these thoughts were a major concern when debating whether to travel to nusa penida. It’s always important to educate where possible.

I will keep a look out for Discover Nusa Penida or any other eco tour group to arrange my manta ray experience if we decide to go.

Hi Chelsea, Thanks for your comment, we’re happy if the information helped you. Nusa Penida is becoming extremely popular but hopefully won’t be ruined by mass tourism. It is definitely the visitor’s and tour organizers’ responsibility how they take care of the environment, so we hope that the people started to understand that the choices (where to stay, what to buy, what to eat, what tour to choose) do matter. If you have time, I recommend spending a few days on the island so you can fully explore it and enjoy the places when the the day-trippers leave. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thank you for this article. You mentioned that you found a 2 hours long snorkel trip with 2 stops that costs around 150.000-200.000 IDR. Can you tell me what company it was with? Thanks for your answer in advance.

Hi David, Sorry I don’t remember the company name, but it was in Crystal Bay so I’m sure you’ll find them, there is a small desk on the left. Have a nice holiday, BR, Anett

Thanks for a very informative post.

Do you think snorkelling in Nusa Penida is safe for a 9 year old kid? The kid does not know swimming yet

Hi Suresh, Thanks for your kind comment. Personally I don’t think that Nusa Penida is a good place to snorkel for a kid who does not know how to swim yet because the currents can be really strong and tricky around the island (especially in Manta Bay, but also Crystal Bay and Gamat Bay can have strong currents). I would recommend going to Amed instead where the water is calmer (depending on the tide, the sea is often completely flat) but still, there is a lot of things to see, even turtles (you can find it in my ‘Amed snorkel spots’ post where to snorkel). Hope this helps, BR, Anett

Snorkeling at Manta Point on Nusa Penida

Published by sarah vaughan on november 16, 2023 november 16, 2023.

Swimming mere feet from enormous manta rays in the chilly waters off Manta Point on Nusa Penida was easily my favorite activity during the month we spent exploring Indonesia ! I’ve snorkeled in many locations across the world, but I’ve never experienced anything quite like snorkeling at Manta Point on Nusa Penida.

Manta Point is home to massive manta rays that are so large you can see them swimming from the cliffs hundreds of feet above the water. But better than observing them from above, you can go snorkeling just a few feet away from these guys.

And while you are probably wondering about the safety of being so close to such gigantic creatures, it’s actually quite safe.

Unlike their relatives, sting rays, manta rays do not have barbs or stingers on their tails, meaning that they physically cannot sting you . In fact, manta rays are filter feeders and are considered completely safe for humans.

Honestly, it seemed like the manta rays were fairly accustomed to human visitors and even enjoyed putting on a show for us!

Whether it’s because they are accustomed to humans or simply have no reason to fear creatures that are just a fraction of their size, the manta rays at Manta Point had no hesitation around human beings.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about snorkeling at Manta Point on Nusa Penida.

Manta Point Snorkeling | At a glance

  • Price | As of 2023, the price is 500,000 IDR per person.
  • Meeting Point | The exact meeting point will depend on your tour operator but it will likely be somewhere near the main harbor area on Nusa Penida .
  • Time | Usually departs at 8:00 am and returns around 11:30 am
  • What to bring | Water, snacks, sunscreen, GoPro or waterproof camera, change of clothes
  • Best time to go | You can snorkel with manta rays at Manta Point on Nusa Penida year round. The best time to visit Nusa Penida is during the dry season from May to October. During this time, the weather (and water) will be warmer and the water will be a bit clearer.
  • Book your tour | You can usually book a tour through your hotel, or reserve a spot in advance through GetYourGuide .
  • Snorkeling so close to massive manta rays is simply magical
  • The boat ride out to Manta Point is beautiful
  • In addition to snorkeling with manta rays, you also get to snorkel at two other spots
  • At 500,000 IDR per person, snorkeling at Manta Point isn’t cheap.
  • Water can be quite cold.
  • One of the most popular activities on Nusa Penida ; tends to get crowded
  • At the last snorkeling spot, our guide poked some sleeping sea turtles to make them swim, which I didn’t like

Booking a snorkeling tour to Manta Point on Nusa Penida is quite easy. You can always ask the reception at your accommodation for help booking a tour. However, booking through your hotel means you don’t have any choice in tour operator, and sometimes you don’t exactly know what you are getting.

If you’re like us, you like to see some reviews and read more details about what you’re paying for. Therefore, we’d recommend booking your tour through GetYourGuide , our favorite way to book excursions.

GetYourGuide gives you way more options than just booking the tour company affiliated with your hotel. You can even find tours that include lunch or will take you to other stops on Nusa Penida after you’re done snorkeling!

We’d recommend booking a tour a few days in advance just to be safe but it’s definitely possible to book with just a day’s notice. The tour operators always seem to find room for a few more people!

Pro Tip | Beware that most snorkeling tours actually go to Manta Bay, which is NOT the same as Manta Point. Manta Bay tends to be chaotic and overcrowded, and you have a much smaller chance of actually seeing manta rays. It can be difficult to tell exactly where each tour goes so don’t be afraid to reach out and ask a tour operator to clarify.

Snorkeling at Manta Point | What to Expect

manta point nusa penida tours

Once you book a snorkeling tour, the operator will give you a specific meeting location and time for the morning of your tour. Most tours depart from somewhere near the main harbor area on Nusa Penida or from Crystal Bay .

If you don’t have a motorbike, make sure you have transportation already arranged. Most tours leave around 8:00am so you’ll need to be there around 7:30 or 7:45 in order to check in and get your snorkeling gear.

sea stacks off the coast of Nusa Penida near Manta Point

Honestly, besides the actual snorkeling with giant manta rays, my favorite part of the snorkeling tour to Manta Point on Nusa Penida was the boat ride to get there.

The boat ride takes about 30-40 minutes and follows along the southern side of Nusa Penida. Along the way, you’ll get up close views of the towering seaside cliffs and sea stacks that make the island so beautiful.

You’ll also pass by the famous Kelingking Beach and rock formation, seeing it from a unique angle that most visitors don’t get to experience.

Manta Rays seen from above at Manta Point

After about 40 minutes or so, the boat will pull up closer to the cliffs and you’ll arrive at Manta Point. Usually, one of the guides will quickly hop in the water and begin searching for the giant manta rays.

When I was there, it took all of 5 minutes before we spotted the first manta ray and before we knew it, there were probably 10 manta rays swimming all around us!

There were a few times when they swam directly at me, only to break to the left or right at the last second. Even though I knew they were harmless creatures, it still got my heart pumping to see a 15-foot wide manta rushing towards me!

The manta rays also seemed to be playing with each other, dancing and twirling around in spirals, right in front of the crowd of snorkelers who had gathered to watch them. I swear it was like they knew they had our attention and wanted to put on an underwater dance show!

I seriously cannot overstate how cool it was to be so close to these gentle giants.

We snorkeled around Manta Point for about 45-60 minutes before heading back to the boat to go to our next stop.

I would have loved to stay there all day to watch the manta rays but honestly, the water was a bit cold and the ocean was pretty choppy. After about an hour of swimming, I think everyone in our group was ready for a rest.

Snorkeling after Manta Point

manta point nusa penida tours

From Manta Point, we started to make our way back towards the main harbor. But our tour was far from over!

We then stopped at Gamat Bay to snorkel through some amazing colorful coral. Gamat Bay is a small alcove that is home to thousands of diverse fish species and some of the most vibrant coral I have ever seen.

While it obviously couldn’t match swimming with giant manta rays, I really enjoyed snorkeling at Gamat Bay and was impressed by the health of the coral.

manta point nusa penida tours

After Gamat Bay, we made one more stop, just outside the main harbor area of Nusa Penida. At this point, I was quite cold from the chilly water and wasn’t super keen to hop back into the sea. However, there were promises of seeing sea turtles so I half-begrudgingly put my mask and fins back on and hopped into the deep water.

We did end up seeing a few sea turtles here but honestly, I didn’t think it was worth it. The area had super deep water so you could barely see the turtles and it was right near the main harbor so boats were passing by in every direction.

But what bummed me out the most was the way the guides poked and prodded the sea turtles so that we could see them more closely.

The turtles we saw were all sleeping way down on the ocean floor, minding their own business. Our guide would swim down and literally poke them to wake them up just so they would swim up toward the surface for our amusement.

I can’t imagine anyone would like such a rude intrusion to their nap!

After seeing the turtles, we hopped back in the boat and were back at the main harbor in just a few minutes.

Pro Tip | The best spot to go snorkeling with Sea Turtles is on the Gili Islands off the coast of Lombok. There are so many turtles here that there’s no need to go poking and prodding sleeping ones!

Snorkeling at Manta Point | FAQs

On Nusa Penida, there are snorkeling tours to both Manta Bay and Manta Point. We highly, highly recommend selecting a tour that goes to Manta Point.

Tours to Manta Point are more expensive (about twice the cost). However, it’s definitely worth paying more to snorkel at Manta Point because you have a much higher chance of actually seeing manta rays at Manta Point!

On other “manta ray snorkeling” tours it’s possible you won’t see any manta rays. Snorkeling at Manta Point essentially guarantees that you’ll get to see these gentle giants!

Nope, no prior snorkeling experience is necessary to go snorkeling at Manta Point on Nusa Penida. As long as you are comfortable swimming in potentially strong currents for an extended time, you’ll be all set.

Yes and no.

Again, manta rays are completely harmless to humans and are actually quite friendly creatures.  However, I won’t lie and say my heart rate didn’t increase a few times as a giant manta started swimming right at me!

No. While Manta Point is located off the coast of Nusa Penida and most tours leave from Nusa Penida, you can find tours that depart from Bali and from the nearby islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

Book your trip | I was staying on Nusa Penida when I snorkeled at Manta Point, so that is how I’ve written this article. However, you can easily find tours that depart from Bali and from Nusa Lembongan/Ceningan on GetYourGuide.

Hello, Which operator did you go with? I have a heard time finding a snorkeling trip to Manta Point. And did you come across any tours that combined Manta Bay and Manta Point in a half day tour? Thanks, Anna

Swimming with the Manta Rays at Manta Point, Nusa Penida

When I first read about all the top attractions and things to do in Nusa Penida , snorkelling with Manta rays, seemed like something I would absolutely love. I always envisioned Manta Point Nusa Penida to be this dreamy spot on a far off island throbbing with exotic Manta rays .

I wasn’t wrong!

During my stay in Nusa Penida, I visited all the popular attractions and slowly ticked them off my list. From Angels Billabong , Broken beach and KleingKing in the west, to Atuh beach in the east and Peguyangan falls in the south of the island – I had most of my Nusa Penida bucket list ticked off in 3 days flat.

Next on my list was snorkeling with the Manta rays. Somehow, even with so many diving schools around, there was no information on how or where to book a cheap Manta point snorkeling day trip in Nusa Penida.

Nusa Penida Mini Travel Guide

Top manta point snorkelling tours, best hotels in nusa penida.

I was lucky as I found a deal for just IDR 150,000 ($ 11). And of course there’s a story behind it….

As I was listening to live music and chilling at Full moon bungalows, I met a few friends from night before and asked them about their day. Immediately, they mentioned what a wonderful time they had snorkeling with Manta rays.

That was my cue.

I asked them where they booked, for how much and if they would recommend that operator. They actually paid over IDR 350,000 ($ 25) per person and weren’t extremely happy with the operator and pointed me to someone sitting next to them saying that they wished they went with him.

Yay – I found my guy!

Manta rays at Manta Point

I took his digits and asked him what time I need to be at the port to go find Manta rays with him. He offered me an unbelievable deal of IDR 150,000 as he already had a group of people so cost for me would be low if I join in.

Sweet deal.

Alas one of my friend was sick so I could not make it the next day but I did go 2 days later for IDR 200,000 and I have to say – this was the coolest boat on Nusa Penida, hands down. From our guide Adin , to his funky rasta boat, it was one of the best day trips in Nusa islands for me.

My Experience of Snorkeling with the Manta Rays

Snorkeling Nusa Penida

Okay so at 8:00 AM sharp, I rode my bike to the harbor, packed some Mie Goreng for breakfast and started looking for the Marley boat ( Adin ’s boat).

Lo behold! It was easy to find it as it literally has a Bob Marley picture on it and painted in Rasta colors with hip hop beats pumping the mood.

That’s when I knew I choose the best boat and guide 🙂

boat nusa penida

Now, I was told Manta rays are not a 100% guarantee (like everything that’s wild.. you cannot predict if you will see them).  I had my fingers and toes crossed as this was my very last day on the island so my only shot to tick this off my bucket list.

I was joined by a cool Malaysian girl and the two of us set off on our lovely day adventure, in our cool Rasta boat with two guides, sipping chilled Bintangs (local beer).

Nusa penida boating

Hey don’t judge us – its evening somewhere! BURP

Our first stop was the underwater Buddha. Now, obviously I hadn’t done my research well and didn’t even know it was part of the tour or that it existed (Duh). All I kept thinking was I want to see the Manta rays. So this was a pleasant surprise. There is actually an entire huge submerged sculpture.

Underwater Buddha temple Nusa Penida

The current was very strong there so we were advised to just see it and get out quickly – reluctantly, we obeyed. Next stop was the much awaited Manta Point.

As we arrived, there were several other boats and excited snorkelers in search of these gentle creatures. Adin suddenly asked us to jump in the water as he spotted a Manta Ray. I didn’t even have my snorkel gear on and GoPro ready so I missed this beauty and just ended up flapping around in the waters for few minutes.

Tip – Be ready 2 minutes before you arrive at Manta point. Always have your snorkel gear on and be ready to jump as soon as your guide advises.

Luckily, soon after they spotted another and I was ready to jump and was able to follow this beauty for several minutes and capture the Manta ray on my GoPro too. She swam under me and almost into me once and this whole experience, even though it lasted just a few minutes, was perhaps one of my best experiences in Nusa Penida .

manta point

Here’s my GoPro footage of swimming with the beautiful Manta Ray –

We didn’t have our fill of the lovely creatures but time was running out and we were ushered back to our boat.

Note – There are jelly fish in the water as Manta rays and jelly fish co-exist. You might get stung several times but as long as you don’t rub/scratch , the itch fades off in few minutes. There were few people on other boats which were badly stung so if you have a wet suit – wear one.

We ended the trip by snorkeling in two other spots.

snorkel current

One had a strong current so we requested Adin to take us to calmer waters so we can enjoy (And bigger fish). He took us to a spot very close to harbor where we saw some amazing big fish of different kinds and had a wonderful snorkeling experience.

Where to Book Your Snorkel tour to Manta Point

I would highly recommend the tour guide ( Adin ) I used for my trip (This was NOT a compensated trip in any way (heck it was just $15) , I just genuinely loved it and recommend this – Its perhaps the cheapest and coolest option for your snorkel adventure).

You can book directly on their Facebook page – Dreaming About Penida .

How to Reach Manta Point Nusa Penida?

adventure manta ray swim

Well you can go to Manta point from all three Nusa islands. Somehow there are more visitors from Nusa Lembongan even though Manta Point is in Nusa Penida. Your tour guide / boat, will arrange your transfers , snorkel gear and everything else for a safe and comfortable trip. So, once you book your tour, you are all set!

Manta Point Nusa Penida

Manta Point is an option on the itinerary of the cheap Nusa Penida Tour Package, for diving or snorkelling. Manta Point is a diving spot that will captivate you with its beautiful scenery and variety of marine life. Nusa Penida Island never fails to disappoint when it comes to maritime matters, and yet there are still many who do not know about this small island near Bali.

Despite this, there are now more and more tourists, both within and outside the country, who go looking for the island because they want to dive its every corner. On the 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour you will find lots of things to do, always surrounded by beautiful scenery and a variety of natural surroundings that will calm your heart and mind. Before coming to Manta Point, read about its beauty and the activities on offer!

Beauty of Manta Point, Nusa Penida

The Manta Point tourist attraction takes the form of a bay surrounded by huge cliffs, a diving spot full of coral reefs; the best views here are from June to September. It is no wonder that during this period, many visitors choose to come here, especially as the current is amenable to the diving activities available on the cheap Nusa Penida Tour Package.

The main attraction is the cleaning station that is located under the sea, but at a shallow depth. It’s not hard to find, and is worth it to witness the amazing scenery. The cleaning station was so named because it is where the cleaning fish try to remove parasites from the body of the very big pari manta fish. Why not plan your 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour straight away, in order to see this remarkable scene.

Things to do in Manta Point

The depth of the cleaning station is about 10–12 metres. To be able to take pictures of the pari manta fish, you should be calm, still and relaxed, so as not to disturb them. You are sure to experience an adrenaline rush in the presence this giant fish. As long as the manta fish does not feel threatened, you can approach it and take pictures. You will not find this very rare scene unless you opt for the affordable Nusa Penida Tour Package.

Once you have reached the depth of 10–12 metres, you must continue the dive to the south of the bay, then down the coral reef. Later you will find a sandy area at a depth of 18–20 metres. This is where you will see the blue pari fish swimming. In the sea at Manta Point there are several scenic locations where you can encounter bamboo sharks, turtles, octopus, mantis shrimp and some other marine life at close quarters.

Location and how to get to Manta Point, Nusa Penida

If you want to experience this rare sight, you can join the 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour or other cheap Nusa Penida Tour Packages. You can let your guide know that you would like to dive here, and ask them to show you where Manta Point is located. You should be accompanied on your Nusa Penida Tour by an experienced guide, because the locations of some of the spots are complicated or hard to find. Do not forget to bring your favourite waterproof camera to capture every single exceptional moment during your holiday.

Why not also invite your family, friends or other couples to go with you? This way, your diving activities will be even more exciting. This is the chance to escape reality for a while and refresh your mind. What are you waiting for? Plan your vacation soon, and then choose the 1-Day Nusa Penida Tour to Manta Point.

It’s a steep trek down to the beach so you will need both hands free at times to grab the rope, so make sure you only have a light backpack with essentials. There aren’t any changing facilities at the beach so it might pay to wer your bathing suit down there.

At Diamond Beach, you get the chance to swim in crystal clear waters and gorgeous photos of the iconic carved staircase.
