The Grand Tour takes on the Bugatti Chiron, Kia Singer and an Alp
The Grand Tour Season 2 streams on Amazon Video
The Grand Tour Season 2 Episode 3: "Bah humbug-atti"
Episode Rating: 3 out of 5 finely burnt watches
(Spoilers, obviously)
The episode's first film is a review of Kia's entrance into the performance sedan category: The Stinger.
James May reviews the car, but it was supposed to be Richard Hammond, who is still recovering from his crash.
The car has all the ingredients of a performance sedan with its 3.3 liter twin turbo v6, rear wheel drive, and an LSD and, according to May, isn't as boring as you'd think.
To showcase the Stinger, May sets up a race with some downhill skateboarders. James will race up a mountain pass while the skateboarders come down it in a race between horsepower and gravity.
In the end, even Captain Slow was able to beat the skateboarders behind the wheel of the Kia.
Conversation street
The trio revived an old tradition of discussing and giving bad car-related Christmas gifts, although the mangled watch from the Rimac crash given to Hammond was a legitimately cool gift. Making it all the more painful to Clarkson and May when they realized Hammond got them nothing in return.
Lunch Hour Grand Prix
In an effort to make people's lunch hours more exciting, the hosts devised a racing series that could come to the workplace. Noting that most business parks are already set up for a circuit, with their roundabout chicanes and parking lots all connected by long straights, they blocked off a circuit and pitted two businesses employees against each other.
After qualifying in various fleet and personal cars, the fastest drivers from the two businesses would face off in the final, as Hammond commentated from the CCTV feed in the security shack.
Celebrity F-off
This episode's celebrity F-off had a strange theme: Men who live with a bear. Representing the British was Hugh Bonneville, an actor that plays a bear's adoptive father in the beloved Paddington bear movies. Representing the US was Casey Anderson who literally lives with a bear he rescued as a cub in Montana.
Hugh Bonneville admitted he was not a 'petrolhead' at all and was very slow, but did manage to beat the time of David Hasselhoff but lost the faceoff by about 4 seconds to Anderson.
The Jetsetting Mr. Clarkson
Finally to the main event of the episode, Jeremy Clarkson has an entire day with a Bugatti Chiron. Inspired by his opulent ride, he aims to recreate the jetsetting lifestyle of super-rich Europeans without the flying.
He aims to start out in Saint Tropez and head to the alps for some skiing before going to Turin for a dinner date.
The Bugatti has a 261mph top speed but Clarkson says he is most impressed that it feels normal around town. He compares the Chiron to the way the supersonic Concorde made the extreme limits of speed and technology feel normal.
The 16-cylinder, 8 liter engine drinks fuel at a 'seven shot glasses per second' rate and can empty the tank in just nine minutes. On his way to the Alps, Clarkson made a BMW M4 look incredibly silly in a drag race before heading into the foothills.
Once there, Clarkson explains that the weight of the Chiron makes for a strange driving experience on the twisty roads. "There are no straights," he says, as the car comes out of one corner and then is almost instantly at the next one. Most supercars flow, he explains, but this one just launches from corner to corner. Clarkson figures it is actually more fun to drive at a slower pace, which caters to the super rich playboys that make up Bugatti customers who care more about being able to say they have the fastest car than actually wringing out every last bit of performance.
Clarkson then is seen in the alps "doing skiing" before heading out of the mountains to his dinner date. On the way down, he demonstrates how the Chiron's turbo noises sound like the surf at the beach. It really is quite relaxing.
On the outskirts of Turin, Clarkson makes an homage to the 1976 short film, " C'était un rendez-vous " by blasting through Turin and meeting his date just in time.
Impressions
The show's scripted nature shown through a bit too much on this episode, beginning with the Stinger review. There is just no way to hold an all-out race in the way they did without planning out the point at which the car would pass the skateboarders. The road had blind corners and areas too skinny to pass. The times may have been legit, but the race we were shown couldn't have been.
The next obvious bit was the office car-park circuit race. It started off as a brilliant idea, which probably made the obvious stick out even more. We wanted to see how normal people would race around a business park so bad that we were disappointed when we noticed the too calm and too skilled drivers navigate the course. The final contest reminded us of the animated 'races' they show on the jumbo-tron during timeouts at sports arenas. If you picked the BMW M3, you get a free hot dog!
This has long been a staple of these kinds of shows. Things must be fudged a bit for logistical and film-making purposes and we are usually happy to suspend our disbelief for an entertaining segment. If it goes too far, which it did in a few spots this episode, it destroys the illusion and all sense of danger or intrigue is lost.
What salvages the episode is the Chiron film. Clarkson 'doing skiing' and yelling at his butlers was hilarious and the "Rendezvous" homage was absolutely perfect. We could listen to that engine and turbo-whoosh all day.
The quote of the episode belonged to Jeremy Clarkson as he explained why James May was wrong for liking slot cars:
"It's like classical music. People think they like classical music but they don't. Nobody does, really"

Kia Stinger Preview with Grand Tour + Full Specifications!
The much-anticipated Kia Stinger is here! Let’s take a look at every aspect of the Korean marque’s first attempt to break into the sports sedan segment. Does the Stinger have the Power To Surprise? Read on and find out!
The Kia Stinger Revealed!
Based on the Gran Turismo (GT) concept, the Kia Stinger features a sleek fastback silhouette with a rear-wheel drive. Inside, it features a sophisticated modern cabin with high-quality finishes and luxurious materials.
Blending high-performance with luxurious comfort, the Stinger is a halo product – designed to elevate Kia’s status as a carmaker. Not surprisingly, it is the fastest automobile Kia has ever made. With its 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine, it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds !
Turbocharged GDi Engine Options
The Kia Stinger comes with two engine options – the Lambda 3.3 T-GDi engine, and the Theta II 2.0 T-GDi engine.
The 3.3L twin-turbo V6 Lambda T-GDi engine delivers 365 horsepower at 6,000 RPM, with up to 510 Nm of torque from 1,300 to 4,500 RPM.
The 2.0L twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder Theta II T-GDi engine, on the other hand, produces 251 horsepower at 6,200 RPM with 353 Nm of torque from 1,400 to 4,000 RPM.
2nd Generation 8-Speed Transmission
The Kia Stinger features a second-generation 8-speed rear-wheel drive automatic transmission. This transmission also features a Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber (CPA) torque converter when paired with the 2.0L Theta II T-GDi engine, helping to reduce torsional vibration through the drivetrain.
Shift-By-Wire transmission control allows you to switch the transmission mode in an instant. You can set it to automatically adjust the gears, or you can take manual control and switch them via paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.
German-Tuned Handling
Kia tuned and refined the Kia Stinger’s handling on the legendary Nürburgring circuit. The control is further enhanced by its Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) that features the Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control System , as well as its Electronically-Controlled Suspension (ECS) and Rack-mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS) .
Safety In All Conditions
The Kia Stinger is not just a track car, it’s meant to be driven in all roads and conditions. Your safety is ensured through safety technologies like the Hill-Start Assist Control (HAC) , Antilock Braking System (ABS) , Traction Control System (TCS) , Cornering Brake Control (CBC) , Blind-spot Collision Warning (BCW) , Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning and of course, 7 airbags. No wonder the Kia Stinger received 5 stars from Euro NCAP!
Cabin Luxuries
The seats in the 3.3L V6 GT variant are covered in soft Nappa leather , while the 2.0L GT-Line variant gets leather seats. Both variants will come with an 8-way power driver seat with 4-way mechanical lumbar support . The front seats are also ventilated for maximum comfort whether it’s hot or cold.
The driver has both a 7-inch LCD cluster display with important driving information, and an 8-inch floating navigation touchscreen display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. Rounding up the cabin luxuries is a 15-speaker Harman Kardon premium speaker system .

Just saw the episode and boy what a let down.
I agree it was a bit of a let down, was expecting more.
They spend way too much time talking and trying to be funny.
I have seen a lot of reviews of the stinger already...im sure most of you have too... they just "rubber stamped that it's not a bad car.. you don't want them to be talking too much either Sent from my SM-A520W using Tapatalk

Kia Stinger Road Trip: Celebrating Our 2018 Car of the Year With a Grand Tour Adventure
The inspiration for the new Kia Stinger came from grand touring cars of the 1970s.
These cars took people on long trips from London to Paris or New York to Los Angeles. GT cars have to successfully blend four characteristics that are usually mutually exclusive: They need to be comfortable yet quick, and stylish yet able to carry a bunch of luggage. Cars typically can do one but not the other.
The Kia Stinger is the Korean automaker’s first attempt at a grand touring car that blends style, performance, comfort, and versatility, and they did such a good job with it that we at AutoGuide.com recently awarded it as our 2018 Car of the Year . We celebrated the Kia Stinger ’s win by doing exactly what it was created for: a grand tour. We took the Stinger GT on a road trip across four American states. Starting and ending in Las Vegas, we drove it through Utah, Arizona, California, and Nevada. We loaded up the sportback with a full-sized roller luggage, a carry-on, two backpacks, a case of water and had plenty of room to spare.

Driving down the Las Vegas strip, which is the world’s biggest distraction, the Stinger was still able to grab a weird amount of attention. Driving behind a lime green Lamborghini Gallardo, someone shouted, “Hey, nice car!” I naturally assumed they were taking to the Lambo driver, but then they pointed their camera in the Stinger’s direction and gave me a thumbs up. I caught the Lamborghini driver scowling at me from his rear-view mirror.
Anxious to get out of the manufactured circus that is Las Vegas and stretch the Stinger’s legs, we left Nevada and booked it to Zion National Park in Utah, a common bucket list destination famous for its staggering views and monumental rock formations. Flipping the Stinger into Sport mode, the pre-dawn drive up the curvy mountain roads to see the sunrise at Zion was doubly rewarding. Adaptive headlights made sure I was able to see into the next corner, making the drive in the dark faster and a lot less stressful.
One way to describe the Kia Stinger is as a budget Audi A5 Sportback. Although the A5 is a superior car, most people can’t afford an A5 and the Stinger is able to do a convincing job for much less money. The Stinger GT that accompanied us on our trip was a rear-wheel-drive, twin-turbo V6-powered model with 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.
The precise and responsive steering, the V6’s healthy amount of power, rear-drive architecture, and well-engineered, balanced chassis made the twisty canyon roads legitimately entertaining to pilot, while the adaptive cruise control and active lane keep assist made long slogs on the interstate much more bearable. Our trip took us from freezing cold and snow to the heat and sun of the desert and the heated and ventilated seats made each climate much more comfortable and we used the USB ports often to keep our devices charged. The head-up display was also handy.
Through our 2,100-mile trip, the Stinger averaged 23.5 mpg, which is surprising since we were driving as if we were in Cannonball Run , but we made it through our trip without a single speeding ticket.
Two things the Kia Stinger could improve on would be more comfortable seats (although it does have a decent driving position, the seats could be more supportive for long drives), and a better navigation system. The voice recognition can be pretty dim at times and the navigation system seems to be missing some key map information. The Stinger also has too many fake vents, but that’s just a personal pet peeve.
On our drive from Zion to Moab in Utah to see Arches National Park, we were getting tired and stopped at a random rest stop at the side of the interstate to get some fresh air. What met us was even more refreshing than we hoped. An enormous canyon dotted with alien-looking rock formations and trees that were twisted by decades of abuse by the wind were glowing in the golden hour sun. Even compared to Zion and the famous Arches National Park, it was one of the most stunning things we saw and it was completely unplanned, barely a blip on anyone’s radar and definitely not on anyone’s bucket list.

Heading south toward Navajo Nation to see Monument Valley at the border of Utah and Arizona where the road that the iconic scene from Forrest Gump was filmed, we took a wrong turn and ended up driving the Stinger through a decrepit little town called Bluff in Utah, where we discovered an abandoned gas station and trading post. Sitting out front was a rusty 1950’s Buick Eight with rotted-out tires and the best patina I’ve ever seen. Parking the Stinger next to this relic, it was a stark reminder of how far cars have come in a few decades. And how much Kia has progressed in just a few short years.
Stumbling onto forgotten little towns and abandoned buildings became quite common the more we drove. Taking an unplanned detour, we found ourselves along the historic Route 66, once a shining gem of America during the post-Second World War boom. Today, much of Route 66 is now crumbling after being rendered obsolete by faster and better-maintained interstates. This left many towns that dotted the iconic route in various stages of decay. Many once-booming towns that catered to travelers doing road trips have been abandoned due to lack of traffic, leaving a graveyard of crumbling buildings, burnt-out and peeling fluorescent signs, and a glimpse of what the U.S. was like in the height of the 1950s. We discovered abandoned diners with sugar and cutlery still on tables but covered in a thick layer of desert dust, retro gas stations with worn down pumps that looked more like tombstones, and even a deserted school and an abandoned mining town.
Making a random stop on our way back to Las Vegas to end our trip, we drove through a town called Amboy, California. We stopped because I desperately needed to use the restroom, but something about this place was off and a bit spooky. Although we admired the funky but crumbling 1950s architecture and fading signage, we left without thinking too much about it, but later learned that Amboy is officially listed as a ghost town. At one point, someone tried to sell Amboy on eBay and currently, only four people are listed as living there. Amboy was a booming town when Route 66 was at its peak, but people stopped driving through and the town slowly lost its luster. Learning about the history of forgotten places like Amboy and experiencing them in their current state of decay was much more eye-opening to me than any of the National Parks and planned bucket list destinations we visited.
More than 2,100 miles, 44 hours behind the wheel, and countless memories later, two things surprised me the most. The first was how interested people were with the Kia Stinger. Nearly everywhere we stopped — and we stopped a lot — someone was curious about the Stinger, was really excited to learn about it, or just wanted to tell us how cool it was. I have not gotten this type of interest in a car since I drove a Lamborghini. Every time we parked it, went for a meal, got gas or a car wash, went to a rest stop, or were sitting in traffic, people wanted to ask us about it.
“I had never seen a Kia with Brembos before,” someone at a gas station told us on our way to the Grand Canyon admiring the bright red brake calipers. “It looks like a Maserati, and then I thought it was an Audi. I thought they only made Optimas and stuff.” At a rest stop in Arizona, I exited the restroom to see a group of people surrounding the Stinger. One guy shouted across the parking lot to his friend, “It’s a Kia … it’s like what would happen if Koreans made a BMW.” He told me later that his friend didn’t believe that Kia made performance cars and was even more surprised to find out it had a twin-turbo V6 and was rear-drive. “Kia’s come a long way,” he said before we drove off.
Some people we met at a rest stop checking out the Kia Stinger. They were super interested to hear about it. This happens literally EVERYWHERE we go. 1500 miles in so far. pic.twitter.com/1SLuobyPfw
— Jodi Lai (@DrivingMissJodi) December 31, 2017
The other surprise was that the best experiences during our road trip weren’t the destinations we had planned, but all the random people we met and strange places we stumbled onto while we were getting there.
The Kia Stinger helped us discover so much during our seven days on the road. Discovering abandoned and forgotten places that are scattered across America along the once grand Route 66 and the stories they hide, meeting the characters in between, and finding beauty in decay brought new meaning to our road trip. The Kia Stinger got us there and the journey wouldn’t have been the same without it. This grand touring car has earned its name and has proven that it’s a worthy road trip companion and a very deserving Car of the Year.

by Brad Anderson
Following the release of the first two episodes of The Grand Tour’s second season , details about episode 3 have just been announced before the show airs on Amazon Prime this Friday. The feature film of the latest episode will see Jeremy Clarkson embarking on a European road trip in the almighty Bugatti Chiron to discover if it’s better to own a supercar than enjoy the glamor of breakfast in St Tropez, skiing in the Alps, and the dining in Turin that’s provided by jets and helicopters.
Another long-awaited review from The Grand Tour will involve James May test driving the range-topping Kia Stinger GT in Majorca to see if it really is worthy of all the hype.
Completing the episode will be a segment dedicated to a new form of car park racing invented by Richard Hammond and James May. Celebrity Face Off starring Hugh Bonneville and Casey Anderson will conclude the episode.

The Clarkson Review: 2018 Kia Stinger GT S
Supersonic, but it won’t fly in blighty.
I AM glad I don’t run an airline, because if I did, all the planes would be pretty much empty pretty much always, and it would be bankrupt in a week.
For instance, I find it amazing that in early March you can’t fly non-stop from the UK to Corfu. I’d have a meeting about that, and explain to my colleagues that Corfu is a lovely spot that is very popular with the sort of middle-class families who’d pay through the nose for such a flight. And then it would turn out that all the middle-class families I was targeting were in the Alps. And didn’t want to spend early March shivering on a beach, on an island that’s pretty much shut.
Did you know there are 30 flights a day from London to New York? Which means that when there were 29, someone said: “Yes, the market can take another.” That wouldn’t have been me. I’d have said: “Twenty-nine flights a day and you reckon there’s a market for a 30th? Pah. Not a chance.” And I’d have been wrong.
Browse NEW or USED cars for sale
I also wouldn’t operate a service to Paris, because it’s faster on the train. But I’d put a 747 on the London-Pisa route and go every 30 minutes because Tuscany’s lovely and our rail companies don’t provide an alternative.
Then there’s Charlotte. I flew there not that long ago on a Tuesday morning and assumed that I’d have the plane to myself. But it was rammed. And that amazed me, because how can there possibly be 300 people a day who wake up in England and think, “I fancy going to North Carolina today”?
Recently, I wanted to go from Bogota in Colombia to Barbados and not one single airline boss has recognised this as a possibility. Which meant I was faced with a four-hour trip to Miami, a six-hour wait, and a near four-hour trip back to virtually where I’d started.
So I had to get a private jet, which wasn’t easy because the people who operate such things are unwilling to send them to Colombia in case they are used for smuggling.
Mind you, while I’d be a useless airline boss, I think I’d be even worse if I were running a car firm. Because if I were at the helm of, say, Kia, and someone came to me saying, “Let’s make a forty grand, rear-drive, four-door coupé with a snarly V6 and many horsepowers,” I’d have shot him in the front of the head for being crazy.
To us here in Britain, Kia makes a range of hatchbacks and saloons for people who know nothing at all about cars. They are quite good-looking and I’m sure they are well made but they are really for the old and the muddled. And there’s the problem. The old and the muddled don’t want a many-horse-powered sports saloon and those that do don’t want a Kia.
There’s more. In Britain, and the rest of western Europe for that matter, the car is rapidly losing its appeal. There are too many rules and too many cameras and there’s too much congestion. The car is seen as an expensive nuisance. We’ve been there and we’ve done that and now we’re in an Uber waiting for Google to give us something that drives itself.
“If you were in the market for a BMW M3, or a fast Audi or a Mercedes-AMG, it’s certain you’d be better off with the Kia. But of course you wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing”
People who buy a flash car are mocked for being footballists and those who buy something fast are labelled as boy racers. The love affair with the car, here, is dying. So what’s the point of Kia trying to sell a fast car such as the Stinger GT S?
Ah well. As I said, I was in Colombia recently and it’s much the same as any country that’s emerging from decades of strife. With a new entrepreneurial spirit causing the whole place to hum, the roads are awash with people driving about, very carefully, in brand new Kias and Dacias. To us, these cars are horrible crates made from old cassette boxes. But over there they are luxury goods to rival anything made by Fabergé. You mention the word Kia in Bogota and people take off their hats.
I would hope, because I fell madly in love with Colombia, that its emergence from the dark side continues and that soon people will be able to make money from something other than forest products. And if that happens, the people are going to want the very best car that Kia can sell them. Because Kia to them is the same as Ford was to us back in the late Sixties. And everyone back then wanted a Cortina 1600E.
The Stinger is a very good car. It’s quite hard to climb aboard because the roofline is low but when you’re in, the driving position has that “hang on a minute” feel that lets you know you’re at the helm of something special.
Which it is. Thanks to a twin turbocharged 3.3-litre V6, you get 365 horsepowers and that means 0-60 in less than five seconds. But it’s not the straight-line oomph that impresses most. It’s the way this car feels as you go about your daily business: special.
Maybe this is because the Stinger was developed by Albert Biermann, who was poached from his previous job running things at BMW’s M division. You can sense his DNA in the Stinger. Same as you can in an M3.
The steering is heavy. I don’t mean it’ll cause you to smell while parking. I mean, it has a meatiness and somehow you know it’s guiding wheels that aren’t troubled by the bothersome business of propulsion. Which means it also feels clean and pure and right.
Fearful that I may have just quoted a Meatloaf song, I’m going to move on to the comfort, which is sublime. I was expecting the ride to shake my eyes out but even in Sport+ nutter mode, it just glides. In the Comfort setting, it doesn’t feel like a sports saloon at all. Jaguar should have a careful look at this car to see how it’s done.
The economy is a bit better than you might expect, the equipment levels are higher than you’d imagine, and it’s hard really to find fault. Maybe the interior is a bit grey and maybe the exterior isn’t quite as handsome as all the other Kias. I especially didn’t like the fake bonnet vents. Or how hard it was to see out of the back window.
But that really is about it. Everything else was either delightful or wonderful or better than I was expecting. If you were in the market for a BMW M3, or a fast Audi or a Mercedes-AMG, it’s certain you’d be better off with the Kia. But of course you wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing. A Kia? What the hell would the neighbours think?
I get that. I wouldn’t want to buy one either. But our friends in Colombia and Cambodia and Rwanda? They will. I’d never have noticed that if I’d been running Kia. Luckily for the company, however, I’m not.
