Why Peter Kay will never crack America - and Las Vegas 'performance' that ended in tears

Comedian Peter Kay, who is going on a huge comeback tour for the first time in 12 years, has revealed why he hasn't tried to crack the US - and it's not because of his accent

Peter Kay is going on a huge comeback tour - but he won't be venturing over to America. The 49-year-old comedian, who recently took five years out of the limelight and hasn't done a tour in 12 years, will be doing stand-up to packed out stadiums across the UK once again.

Despite his immense popularity on these shores, Peter has never attempted to crack the US, even though some comedy legend's have urged him to. The Bolton-born star has previously revealed why he has never broken through in America - and it doesn't have anything to do with his accent.

While chatting to fellow comedian Jason Manford on his Absolute Radio show in November 2017, Peter claimed that Vimto was part of the problem.

"My entire act is through and through British. I reference everything British," he explained.

"They go, 'You should go to America'... Billy Connolly said that to me, 'You want to go to America, they'd love you', but they would not get Vimto and all that," he added.

"That's my fear, I think – [best to] stick to what you know."

Another issue is that the funnyman gets quite homesick when he is away from his family, so he has no desire to go touring around the world.

"You've got to just be happy with your lot," he added. "How much are you going to chase your tail? I thought about it... but do I want to be stuck in Norway, on me Jack?

"They say go to Australia and I think, 'Well, I'd just go to Australia on a holiday'."

Peter also admitted that he has "never been keen on America" during an interview with legendary talk show host Michael Parkinson.

The comedian joked that the only thing he liked about going there was that he feels smaller by comparison, joking: "If you think I'm fat, it's like It's A Knockout over there!"

Peter revealed that the only time he has "performed" in the US was not stand-up, but karaoke in a Las Vegas hotel.

When he explained that he is from Bolton, the host said: "You mean like Michael Bolton?"

He claimed the Americans took it too seriously and thought they were the actual singers, so he decided to get people up on their feet dancing with a "British classic".

They didn't have his backing track, but that didn't stop Peter singing Black Lace hits Agadoo and Superman.

"They're all doing it in casinos. Honest to god, I've opened it up for Black Lace over there," he said. "They loved it. They put me on their shoulders running around the room."

Unfortunately, Peter said a German man "killed the atmosphere stone dead" by getting up next to sing Candle In The Wind - doing the version Elton John sang at Princess Diana's funeral.

"You could have heard a cockroach fart. Americans were crying," said Peter. "They all stopped playing crabs, there was no one scooping ice cream. Cowboys, 8-foot tall, stetsons off, crying."

He may not be big in America, but the comedian is a massive hit in the UK and fans were thrilled by his surprise tour announcement at the weekend.

During Sunday's opener of I'm A Celebrity , a 30-second trailer popped up showing Peter carrying a large rolled-up carpet while being filmed by a pal from a car.

"Hey look, it's Peter Kay. Hey, garlic bread," the man shouted, quoting Peter's iconic joke, to which he replied: "It's the future lads."

While Peter tried to get the carpet inside the man asked when he was going back on tour, and he confirmed: "Next month!"

After revealing that the stand-up tickets go on sale this Saturday, Peter joked he'd bought his mum a bungalow but now she wants a new carpet - a callback to his last tour, Mum Wants A Bungalow.

His new stand-up tour, his first in 12 years, has already caused a stir online due to the locations, as a range of northern cities were picked to host but none in the south .

The funnyman is set to perform in Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Nottingham, Glasgow, Dublin and Belfast - but not London.

The 22-date tour is scheduled to take place between December 2022 and August 2023, although some months have just one or two dates.

As part of the announcement of his tour, the comedian also explained he was slashing the price of his tickets.

"It's good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now," he said.

"And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010."

Record-breaking comedian Peter Kay announces extra dates to already huge tour

Kay is a Guinness World Record holder for the biggest-selling live comedy run of all time - playing to a total of 1.2 million people.

Comedian Peter Kay has announced extra dates for his already huge live tour.

Kay was brought to tears on the opening night of his first live comedy tour in 12 years last Friday - the first in a lengthy arena tour spanning from December to late 2023.

For the last four years before the shows had kicked off, the 49-year-old had been largely absent from the public eye.

In 2017, he sparked headlines when he cancelled his last 14-month tour at short notice due to "unforeseen family circumstances".

He announced the extra shows on BBC Radio on Thursday.

He said: "First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who's bought tickets to my tour, and I really do appreciate it.

"We've finally managed to book some more extra dates."

Tickets will go on sale this Sunday from 10am for shows in cities including Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Glasgow and a 28th night at London's O2 Arena.

O2 was forced to apologise after its priority ticket website offering customers early access to the first tranche of the Phenix Nights star's tour tickets crashed due to "extraordinary demand".

As part of the gig series, Kay will be performing a monthly residency at London's O2 Arena, the first artist in the world to do so.

In 2010, Kay gained the Guinness World Record for the biggest-selling run of all time - playing to a total of 1.2 million people.

Peter Kay announces new tour dates after huge demand

Peter Kay announces new tour dates after huge demand

The comedian is set to return to the stage next year.

Emily Brown

Peter Kay has announced even more tour dates after thousands of people rushed to get tickets for his upcoming performances.

The comedian is set to return to the stage after a 12-year-long absence with a comeback tour which kicks off later this year, and needless to say, there are a lot of people hoping to get tickets.

Kay's website crashed this morning as fans clamoured to be among those watching him perform live, so to give more people chance to join in the fun he has now announced even more dates.

The 49-year-old is set to perform an additional show which has been added at London’s O2 on Saturday, 16 December, 2023, as well as another on Saturday, 6 January, 2024 to help ensure fans can start or end the year with a smile.

Other new dates include 9 August and 7 October, 2024 at Birmingham Utilita Arena; 17 and 18 May, 14 and 15 June, and 26 and 27 July, 2024 in Manchester; and 6 September, 2024 in Sheffield.

Announcing the news on Twitter today, Kay wrote: "Extra dates added to Peter Kay’s arena tour!”

Kay's tour will see him travelling to Manchester, Birmingham and London in 2022, followed by Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Belfast, Newcastle, Dublin, Glasgow, Cardiff and Nottingham in 2023.

Kay is set to return to the stage after 12 years.

He is also set to appear regularly with a new residency slot at the O2 Arena, which will take place monthly.

Ticket sellers SJM Concerts were forced to issue an apology earlier this week as fans flooded to get pre-sale tickets, acknowledging 'a number of technical issues customers experienced while trying to buy tickets for Peter Kay's upcoming live tour via the O2 Priority pre-sale'.

"SJM Concerts would like to reassure customers that substantial provision has been put in place for the main ticket on-sale this Saturday... Plenty of tickets will be available throughout the day so please persevere," the company continued.

O2 itself also issued a statement on the demand for Kay's tickets, writing: "We’re seeing unprecedented demand for Peter Kay tickets & we know a lot of you can’t access Priority. Sorry, we’re working on it. Please be patient; this is by far the highest demand we’ve ever seen for Priority Tickets in 15 years."

Kay announced new dates due to high demand.

Fans using Ticketmaster to try and secure their tickets were met with queues of 200,000 people, with the website explaining that Kay was 'super popular', as was to be 'expected'.

"To make it as fair as possible, we have put everyone in a queue. Be patient and don’t refresh or you’ll lose your place," the company explained.

Kay's poster for the upcoming tour describes it as the 'ideal Christmas gift' and the ideal weekend away, 'apart from when it's a Wednesday'.

Peter kay, o2 arena review - comeback show is worth the wait, nostalgia-fest delivers an emotional punch.

peter kay tour usa

In 2017, Bolton comic Peter Kay had to cancel his planned tour because of “family circumstances”. But then, when he announced last year that he was back in the saddle, the tickets for Better Late Than Never sold like the proverbial. Well into what has mushroomed into a mega tour continuing until 2025, I caught him at the O2 Arena.

While it's good to have him back, much of the first half could have been written for any of Kay's previous tours since he was nominated for best show in the 1998 Perrier Awards (now the Edinburgh Comedy Awards) as he riffs on one of his mainstays, advertising jingles from his youth. At one point he even leads the audience into a singalong of them.

His material moves to firmer, although no less nostalgic, territory as he recalls jobs from his youth, working at a video rental shop and at a Top Rank bingo hall (younger fans may need to do online searches). There's a decent riff on his unintentional catchphrase “Garlic bread!” and how he now can't pop down to the supermarket to buy it, and he references his appearance on Doctor Who (he says he did it just so that he could make a joke about “Dalek bread”, which I hope is true).

Much has happened to a very slimmed-down Kay since he was last on tour – as it has to much of the population, of course – but threading through the show are his more reflective view of life and mentions of his beloved 96-year-old Nan, who died last year. We hear about some of her malapropisms and later a conversation between them as a family slide show appears on the onstage screen. There's a very funny section, too, on his recent brush with ill health as he has had kidney stones and needed an operation, the experience not made any easier by the anaesthetist asking for a selfie.

And, always a crowd-pleaser, Kay does a lengthy section of his party piece – misheard song lyrics, using his trusty old Walkman just to underline the nostalgia-fest we're experiencing.

Then, just as the evening appears to be winding down, Kay delivers an astonishing coup de theatre, expertly drawing all the seemingly unconnected threads into a hilariously bombastic finale full of colour and spectacle.

The audience are asked to keep the secret for those coming to later dates, and I hope they do because the sheer theatrically of it grabs not just one's attention, but one's emotions too. Kay proves that under that everyman exterior there beats the heart of a showman.

In the comedy sketch Peter can be seen carrying a roll of carpet to a bungalow, when a man in a van says, "Look it's Peter Kay" before yelling "Ey, Garlic Bread!"  - an iconic catchphrase used by the comedian.

It catches his attention and Peter replies, "Hey, it's the future lads."

The man asked, "Hey when you back on tour?" and Peter reveals, "Next month."

Where to buy Peter Kay tickets

Peter Kay tickets are available to buy on the official Peter Kay website , Ticketmaster , Ticketmaster Ireland , and Gigs and Tours from 10 am on Saturday, 12th November 2022.

Speaking about his upcoming tour, Peter said: "It's good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now. And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010."

Pre-sale tickets for the tour went live on Thursday 10 November, as O2, Virgin Media and Three users were offered access two days early.

However, many hoping to get their hands on tickets were left disappointed as the huge demand left many unable to access the apps and websites offering pre-sale tickets.

O2 and Virgin said, "Please be patient; this is by far the highest demand we've ever seen for priority tickets in 15 years. The presale lasts for 48h so keep checking." Meanwhile, Three said, "We're seeing a huge demand for Peter Kay tickets and we're aware many of you can't access the Three + app this morning. We're working on it as fast as we can!"

Peter Kay posted an apology on behalf of SJM concert on Twitter , which read: "SJM Concerts would like to reassure customers that substantial provision has been put in place for the main ticket on-sale this Saturday 12th at 10am. Plenty of tickets will be available throughout the day so please persevere and please buy from official ticket outlets."

In response to the demand, new dates were added in cities including Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

In 2010, Kay set a world record for the biggest-selling stand-up comedy tour, playing to more than 1.2 million people, it it's looking like he could now break his own record with his new tour.

Why did Peter Kay cancel his last tour?

Peter Kay cancelled his last tour in 2017 due to "unforseen family circumstances", which led him to be largely absent from the spotlight ever since.

He was due to perform at a planned 14-month, 100-show stand-up tour, but he announced the sad news that it was cancelled on his website, where he apologised to fans who had bought tickets, insisting it "wasn't a decision he had taken lightly."

At the time, the full statement read: "Due to unforeseen family circumstances I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects. This unfortunately includes my upcoming stand-up tour, Dance For Life shows and any outstanding live work commitments.

"My sincerest apologies. This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first. I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again I’m very sorry."

He briefly returned to the stage during his Dance for Life tour that came to the Manchester Central Convention Complex, but this has to be postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic and was later rescheduled in 2022.

Where does Peter Kay live?

Peter Kay still lives in his hometown of Farnworth, in Lancashire with his wife Susan Gargan, who he married back in 2001. The couple have three children together - teenage son Charlie, and two younger children who have been shielded from the public eye.

Peter and his wife are directors of Goodnight Vienna Productions, which co-produces his comedy shows.
