The Real PGA Tour Money List for 2023: Rahm, Hovland, McIlroy & More

pga tour player earnings 2023

Scottie Scheffler topped the traditional money list, but that was before $75 million in FedEx Cup payouts — find out who’s truly No. 1 in 2022-23.

Entering the 2023 Tour Championship — the finale of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and by extension this year’s PGA Tour campaign — Scottie Scheffler was on the doorstep of golf history. Already the Tour’s record-holder for single-season tournament winnings at just over $21 million, he had a chance to score some serious style points and nearly double his financial haul.

Due to FedEx Cup regulations, his status as playoff points leader meant that he even got to start out the Tour Championship at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club at -10, two strokes ahead of the No. 2 competitor on the leaderboard.

When the dust had settled on Aug. 27, however, Scheffler finished just sixth, though he nonetheless earned a $2 million FedEx Cup payout that wasn’t so far off from the handsome $2.7 million he received for winning The Masters in 2022.

Viktor Hovland, meanwhile? The No. 3 money winner from the regular PGA Tour season increased his annual on-course earnings by an incredible 127% in outlasting the Tour Championship field and claiming the FedEx Cup’s eye-popping $18 million top prize.

That’s a lot to process, to say the least. So, what does the “real” year-end PGA Tour money list look like when a full $75 million in playoff bonuses gets factored in?

We went ahead and crunched the numbers for you — check out Boardroom’s full 2022-23 PGA Tour earnings rundown that combines the traditional money list with the final FedEx Cup payout numbers.

Combined 2022-23 PGA Tour Money List Earnings & FedEx Cup Payouts

NOTE: Additional bonus money will be handed out to top players later this year when the PGA Tour announces the top finishers for its Player Impact Program, which seeks to rank the most popular golfers on the Tour regardless of tournament performance.

Who Was The Highest Earning PGA Tour Player Of 2023?

Designated events swelled the prize money on the PGA Tour in 2023, but who earned the most money?

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

Viktor Hovland during the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai

The prize money offered by the PGA Tour increased in the 2022/23 season as it tried to stave off the threat of LIV Golf and persuade its best players to stay with the more established circuit.

With regular designated events offering purses of $20m, that increased the earning potential of the players who stayed loyal to the PGA Tour. From early on, it appeared inevitable that someone would surpass Scottie Scheffler ’s record earnings of $24,796,910 following his T2 at the Tour Championship that concluded the 2021/22 season.

The early running was made by Jon Rahm , who had already amassed $12,826,540 following his Masters win in April. However, that was the last time the Spaniard was to taste victory in the season, leaving the door open for someone to catch him.

One of those players was Viktor Hovland , who was quietly going about his business while Rahm was setting the PGA Tour alight with four wins in the opening months of the year.

All the while, there were signs that the Norwegian was putting together a memorable year, which included a T2 at March’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass , which earned him $1.96m, and a $3.6m payday for his victory at The Memorial Tournament three months later.

Meanwhile, Scheffler was compiling another excellent season too, with victories in the WM Phoenix Open and Players Championship earning him $8.1m. Indeed, it was the Texan who finished on top of the PGA Tour’s money list for the 2022/23 season having earned $21,014,342 - almost $7m ahead of Hovland, who finished third behind Rahm.

There was another twist, though, courtesy of the bonus money available at the Tour Championship , which concluded the FedEx Cup Playoffs. At East Lake , Hovland claimed the trophy and, with it, another $18m.

Viktor Hovland with the FedEx Cup trophy

Viktor Hovland's FedEx Cup win earned him a bonus of $18m

That took Hovland’s earnings to $32,112,235, but there was more to come. The 26-year-old banked another $1.4m for finishing seventh in the Comcast Business Tour top 10, which rewards the top players in the FedEx Cup standings at the end of the regular season. That took the total to an incredible $33,512,235, over $7m higher than Scheffler and $12m more than Rahm.

As it was a wraparound season, you would need to take off Hovland's earnings from the 2022 part of it to get the figure strictly for 2023. If you do this, the total comes down to $32,800,805 on the PGA Tour.

However, Hovland also played a couple of times on the DP World Tour in 2023, earning $381,600 for his finish of fifth in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and another $910,000 for his T2 at the DP World Tour Championship.

That takes his total earnings for 2023 to $33,710,805, swelling to $34,803,835 if you include the tournaments Hovland played during the 2022 part of the PGA Tour season.

So, how had Hovland been enjoying his incredible earnings for the year? He was asked that at the DP World Tour's season-closer In Dubai: "Not necessarily materialistic things," he explained. "I took my mum to a nice trip to Malta and we went there and hung out, ate good food and checked out some places and sightseed a little bit, so that’s the stuff that’s cool.”

Hovland Claims PGA Tour Championship, Record $34.5M in Earnings

Viktor Hovland of Norway celebrates with the FedEx Cup

Last Sunday, Viktor Hovland shot a course record 61 at Olympia Fields Golf Club in Illinois to come from behind to win the BMW Championship in the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The career-low round clinched a $3.6 million payday. “Nothing that beats that,” Hovland said.

The 25-year-old Norwegian just beat that.

Hovland ran away from the field this week to capture the PGA Tour Championship, with Xander Schauffele finishing in second, five strokes back. The victory also secured Hovland the FedEx Cup Playoffs title and its $18 million bonus. The five-year pro set a new PGA Tour record for one-year earnings with $34.5 million, including his prize money, FedEx bonus and Comcast Business Tour top 10 bonus.

After Hovland, the golfers with the highest total earnings for 2023 were Scottie Scheffler ($26.4 million), Jon Rahm ($21.3 million), McIlroy ($20.3 million) and Clark ($17.8 million). McIlroy’s $28.4 million in earnings last year set the previous Tour record.

It has been a banner year for golfers’ bank accounts after the PGA Tour boosted prize money this season to compete with LIV Golf . The PGA established 13 “elevated” events that feature increased winnings totaling $315 million, up 47% from 2022. The PGA Tour’s total purse for the year is expected to top $560 million, an increase of $140 million.

Scheffler set a record last year for official PGA Tour prize money with $14 million. Three golfers—Scheffler ($21 million), Rahm ($16.5 million) and Hovland ($14.1 million)—topped the record this year, with McIlory just $100,000 behind.

Last year, LIV recruited Bryson Dechambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Cameron Smith, and dozens of other players. In addition to massive signing bonuses, its eight no-cut events last year had total prize money of $255 million. Johnson topped LIV’s prize money list with $35.6 million. In 2023, the 14 LIV events are scheduled to pay $405 million in total.

In June, the PGA Tour, LIV and DP World Tour, Europe’s main golf circuit, reached an agreement to merge their commercial interests into a single, for-profit global golf entity. It ended all litigation between LIV and the PGA Tour.

Hovland and other PGA Tour stars will add to their prize money haul via the Tour’s Player Impact Program (PIP), which began in 2021 to funnel more money to top players who bring attention to the sport. It paid out $40 million during the first year and jumped to $100 million for 2022. Hovland’s total earnings should hit $40 million if he finishes in the program’s top six.

Prize money payouts for each PGA Tour player at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open

It pays to play well on the PGA Tour, especially at designated events. Just ask this week’s winner, Scottie Scheffler .

The 26-year-old earned his fifth PGA Tour win Sunday with his title defense at the 2023 WM Phoenix Open, the first full-field designated event of the season. Scheffler finished at 19 under to take home the top prize of $3.6 million and leapfrog Phil Mickelson for the most money won at the Phoenix Open .

Nick Taylor’s quest for a third win on Tour came up short, but the Canadian will leave TPC Scottsdale with $2.18 million, nearly $700,000 more than what Scheffler pocketed for winning the Phoenix Open a year ago.

Desert fan-favorite and former Arizona State star Jon Rahm finished third and earned $1.38 million.

Last year, the 2022 PGA Championship purse increased to $15 million. And this year, the 2023 PGA Championship purse jumped yet again to a whopping total of $17.5 million. Scottie Scheffler has revealed insights into the financial dynamics with his caddie following a staggering year where he pocketed almost £50m.

In 2024, the American golf star had an extraordinary run of form, bagging a second Masters victory in April and wrapping up the year triumphantly at the FedEx Cup, which brought him a handsome £19m. Throughout the year, he added numerous PGA Tour wins and top-10 placements to his name.

Scheffler's astounding success translated into average earnings of £2.5m per tournament, over £628,000 for each round, and around £9,000 per golf shot. With those sums, it's no surprise that Ted Scott, his caddie, has also seen his bank balance substantially swell, placing him at the pinnacle of caddie earnings.

Before the grand win at the FedEx Cup, Scott had already amassed upwards of £2m from the PGA Tour alone, putting him in 58th place if he were ranked among players on the money list, even out-earning Jordan Spieth , who is a three-time major champion and a friend of Scheffler's.

Caddies typically get a cut from their golfer's winnings - about 10 per cent for a win, 7 per cent for a top-10 finish, and 5 per cent for making the cut. With huge amounts flowing in, Scheffler employs assistance for managing his finances. He shared details about Scott's payments on Pardon My Take podcast, saying: "We have a girl that helps us pay bills basically because I'm a child and I can't keep track of all that stuff! She quickly took over that job and texts me at the end of each week, saying, 'Hey, this is how much we're paying Ted'. I'm like, 'That's great'."

Scott, who faithfully served as Bubba Watson's caddie for a decade and a half, found affinity with Scheffler in their shared bible study group. This played a significant role in influencing Scheffler's decision to work with him.

Regarding his collaboration with his caddie, the top-ranked golfer revealed: "I just think the world of him as a person so that was why I was attracted to him just being a potential good partner for me out on the course. I really want to work with a Christian. That's how I try to live my life."

Not only is Scott a reliable caddie, but he also excels at the sport himself, holding an impressive handicap of four and offering golf instruction online. Reminiscing about the end of his professional partnership with two-time major winner Watson, Scott remarked: "Bubba and I are still very good friends. We just had some different ideas in our life of where we are and where we wanted to go."

The final numbers on the PGA Tour money list for 2023 are a direct result of LIV forcing the Tour to increase purses and find more avenues for its players to boost income. Those increases across the board have the tour’s top earners surpassing their LIV counterparts when it comes to prize money.

Of course, the biggest payday for most of those who defected from the PGA Tour to LIV was the initial contract, or signing bonus. This includes a handful of players such as Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith whose contracts exceeded $100 million.

Meanwhile, the PGA Tour handed out more than $560 million in prize money in 2023, including $100 million for the Player Impact Program and $75 million for the Tour Championship. The PIP money goes to the top 20 players who boosted engagement and publicity for the tour.

LIV’s total purse increased to $405 million in Year 2 of its existence. LIV’s purse includes $115 million in team prize money and $30 million split between the top three in the seasonlong individual race.

The LIV schedule includes 14 events compared to 38 on the PGA Tour. Still, the top earners on Tour play around 20 events, some as few as 18, others 23. LIV golfers who qualify for the four majors play at least 18 events. And every golfer enters a handful of tournaments on other tours.

LIV certainly got the attention of the PGA Tour with its massive contracts and increased purses, forcing the tour to dramatically up its prize money game. The Tour’s total prize money has risen substantially since 2021 when it was just under $400 million.

While the threat of more players defecting to LIV certainly played a factor, that money had to come from somewhere. Besides leaning on sponsors to help with the eight signature events with $20 million purses, the Tour received an infusion of money with nine-year media deals with CBS, NBC and ESPN that started in 2022.

The 2023 money list was finalized after distributing the PIP money. The top 10 made about $220 million combined compared with LIV’s top 10, who earned approximately $147 million in prize money.

LIV’s totals include each individual’s slice from the season-ending $50 million team event at Doral, but not the $5 million awarded to the top three teams in each of the other 13 events. The captains of each team determine how much of that money goes to the four players and how much goes into the team pot for operating fees.

Viktor Hovland topped the PGA Tour money list this year, bringing in $37.1 million, about $1 million more than LIV’s biggest earner, Talor Gooch.

Hovland’s breakdown was $14.1 from tournament winnings, $18 million for winning the FedEx Cup and $5 million for the PIP.

Gooch won $17.3 million over 14 events, plus $18 million for capturing the individual title and $800,000 for his share from the team competition at Doral. Gooch was a member of RangeGoats, which finished second.

Hovland was followed by Rory McIlroy, who earned $32.9 million, $15 million coming from winning the PIP’s top prize; Scottie Scheffler, who made a tour-record $21 million before bonuses brought his total to $29 million; Jon Rahm at $26.2 million, including $16.2 million on tour and $9 million from the PIP; and Xander Schauffele at $17.9 million.

The top five earners on LIV this year were Gooch, Smith ($23.2 million), Koepka ($17.7 million), DeChambeau ($14.7 million) and Harold Varner III ($9.9 million).

Smith pocketed $8 million as runner-up in the individual race behind Gooch. Koepka placed third, taking home the $4 million bonus.

Hovland, Scheffler and Schauffele each made 23 starts on the PGA Tour, Rahm played in 20 tour events and McIlroy 18.

Smith, Koepka and DeChambeau played 14 LIV events and four majors each. Gooch qualified for three majors and Varner was in two.

Koepka was LIV’s top earner among those who played in the majors, making $5.1 million, including $3.15 million for winning the PGA Championship.

Tiger Woods labelled 'petty, vindictive and greedy' over latest PGA Tour rumour

PGA Tour golfers Tiger Woods and Patrick Cantlay were labelled 'petty, vindictive and greedy' over the latest rumour surrounding the LIV Golf League.

pga tour player earnings 2023

Prominent golf journalist Alan Shipnuck labelled PGA Tour golfers Tiger Woods and Patrick Cantlay 'petty, vindictive and greedy' after a wild rumour surfaced.

That rumour?

According to Bloomberg , an armistice between the Tour and rival LIV Golf League moved a lot closer after officials from both sides met last week in New York.

But it came with a huge and potentially messy caveat.

Some PGA Tour players want LIV players to pay back the massive sums given to them by the Saudi PIF before being granted a return to their former employer.

Jon Rahm , Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith are all said to have been paid north of $100m up front to join the breakaway.

Another pathway back for the 'rebels', per the report, suggested that LIV golfers could pay fines, forfeit future earnings or donate money to charity.

The topic of how to reintroduce LIV players to the fold has been addressed multiple times over the past two years.

It's clear that some players, such as Woods, have strong feelings about it.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler stressed before the Players at TPC Sawgrass that there should be some caveat before returning.

As for Woods, he said back in February there were 'daily talks' about the potential return of LIV players.

Tiger Woods

"We are looking into, in all the different models, for pathways back," Woods said.

"What that looks like, what the impact is for the players who stayed and have not left, and how we making our product better going forward - there is no answer to that right now.

"We are looking at varying degrees of ideas and what that looks like in the short-term we don’t know, in the long-term we don’t know what that looks like."

"Trust me, there are daily and weekly emails and talks about this and what this means for our tour going forward."

Needless to say, the latest rumour has received mixed reactions from golf fans online.

Golf Digest's Joel Beall claimed the Bloomberg report was false.

"LIV players returning money—specifically Rahm—is not what's holding up a potential PGA Tour-PIF deal, sources tell me," he wrote on X.

"It's how to integrate LIV players back, and what LIV's future looks like in a unified game (current LIV iteration likely done, but will be around in some form)."

Patrick Cantlay

The aforementioned Shipnuck, who penned a tell-all book about Mickelson , claimed that Woods and his fellow policy board member Cantlay are just being vindictive.

He wrote on X: "I don't care how petty, vindictive and greedy Tiger & Cantlay are...they can't be this dumb, can they?

"No LIV golfer is going to refund money they received (and spent!) 2 years ago. No wonder Dunne, Stephenson & Flaherty ejected—vengeance is not a productive negotiating strategy."

I don't care how petty, vindictive and greedy Tiger & Cantlay are...they can't be this dumb, can they? No LIV golfer is going to refund money they received (and spent!) 2 years ago. No wonder Dunne, Stephenson & Flaherty ejected—vengeance is not a productive negotiating strategy https://t.co/Ben1iTdYK8 — Alan Shipnuck (@AlanShipnuck) September 17, 2024

Shipnuck was referring to former PGA Tour officials Jimmy Dunne, Randall Stephenson and Mark Flaherty.

Dunne, who was the first to approach PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan over WhatsApp about a peace deal, resigned from the PGA Tour's policy board in May.

Dunne, one of Rory McIlroy 's closest allies, expressed frustration at the lack of progress between the Tour and PIF that no longer needed his input.

Stephenson walked out the door last July, citing the fact he could not support the LIV deal in light of the U.S. intelligence report concerning the death of Jamal Khashoggi.

Flaherty resigned in May 2024.

Scottie Scheffler wins Memorial with newborn son in attendance

It was the fifth pga tour title of the year for scheffler, and his first as a father., by doug ferguson | associated press • published june 9, 2024 • updated on june 9, 2024 at 7:56 pm.

Winning has become a habit for Scottie Scheffler, except there was nothing typical about his victory Sunday at the Memorial.

He made only one birdie. He closed with a 2-over 74, his highest final round in two years. And victory wasn't assured until Scheffler had the mettle to put a firm stroke on a downhill putt from 5 feet above the hole to take out the break.

It went right in the heart for a one-shot victory over Collin Morikawa, and a handshake with tournament host Jack Nicklaus. Their  exchange  said it all.

“You're a survivor,” Nicklaus told him.

“Thanks,” Scheffler said. “Yeah, you made this place brutal today.”

Scheffler endured more stress than he wanted and got the victory everyone has come to expect, his fifth of the season — one week into the month of June — as he heads for another tough test next week in the U.S. Open.

Muirfield Village was so demanding with its ultra firm greens and swirling gusts throughout the afternoon that only six players broke par and the average score was a fraction under 75.

Scheffler, who started four shots ahead, never lost the lead. He never felt safe, either, not with Morikawa and Adam Hadwin on his heels all afternoon, and on a back nine where making par felt like hard work. Par is what it took on the 18th hole.

“This is a tough place to close out,” Scheffler said. “I didn’t do a whole lot great today, but I did enough.”

Just barely.

Scheffler was leading Morikawa by one shot and both hit approach shots that bounced hard and high off the green and into the rough. Both chipped to about 5 feet. Scheffler buried his putt to win, and the force of his fist pump to celebrate showed how tough this day was on him, and practically everybody.

Making the day even more special was a recent memory with Nicklaus at the Memorial, and cradling month-old son Bennett at his newborn's first PGA Tour event.

Scheffler thought back to 2021, when he missed a 6-foot putt on the final hole that ended any chance of a playoff. Walking off the green, he recalls Nicklaus telling him one day Scheffler will make the putt on 18 “and I'll be walking off to shake his hand.”

“It was pretty special thinking about that as I was walking over to shake his hand," he said.

Morikawa, who played in the final group of both majors this year, holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the par-3 12th hole and stayed on Scheffler's heels the rest of the way. He shot 71, the only one from the final 13 groups to break par.

Adam Hadwin was right there with them until closing with three straight bogeys for a 74 to finish alone in third.

Scheffler finished at 8-under 280 and won $4 million from this signature event and its $20 million purse. That pushes him over $24 million for the year, breaking the PGA Tour season earnings record — and it's barely June — that he set last year in this era of rising purses.

He also become the first player since Tom Watson in 1980 to have won five times on the PGA Tour before the U.S. Open.

That's next week at Pinehurst No. 2, and Scheffler will go to the U.S. Open as a huge favorite. This was his 11th consecutive tournament with a top 10.

Morikawa picked up $2.2 million and now has a big cushion as he tries to sew up the fourth spot for the Americans going to Paris this summer for the Olympics.

Hadwin was within one shot of the lead until finishing the front nine with a pair of bogeys. He stayed in the hunt until closing with a pair of bogeys for a 74. Still, his third-place finish moves him ahead of Corey Conners for the second Canadian spot in the Olympics.

The world ranking after the U.S. Open determines who goes to Paris.

Scheffler had only one birdie — a 10-foot putt on the sixth hole — and he missed two birdie chances inside 10 feet on the back nine that could have provided a cushion.

But he made the biggest one on the par-3 16th.

Scheffler and Morikawa were both short of the super slick green some 90 feet away. Scheffler used putter and hit it weakly, coming up 15 feet short. Morikawa chipped from the collar and also hit a pedestrian chip some 20 feet short.

Morikawa missed his par putt, and Scheffler buried his for a two-shot lead.

Scheffler dropped his final shot on the 17th, however, and he was clinging again to a one-shot lead playing the tough 18th that he ended with one last putt.

Next up is the so-called toughest test in golf, and players felt like they just got finished with one at Muirfield Village.

“You could look at it one of two ways,” Hadwin said. “Either it's good prep for next week or we just got our butts kicked before going into next week.”

For Scheffler it's another victory, his 11th of his career and 12th worldwide. He has finished strong to win big or come from behind. He has pulled away when it was tight at the start. This time, he nearly lost a four-shot lead.

It was his highest closing round since a 74 in the British Open at St. Andrews in 2022. But it goes in the book as another big win against the strongest fields. He now has won three signature events (Bay Hill and Hilton Head were the others) to go along with The Players Championship and his second green jacket at the Masters.

You’ll never believe what some players are reportedly asking for as part of a potential PGA Tour-PIF deal

The ongoing truce talks between the PGA Tour and PIF, now deep into their second year, are the worst saga in sports. Progress has been measured in inches, not miles. The reporting has been shrouded in hearsay, rumors and bias. Imagine the bitterness and pettiness of an MLB lockout and multiply it two-fold, and that pretty much paints the picture.

Take, for instance, new reporting from Bloomberg on Tuesday which states that a potential armistice “inched closer” during a meeting between the PGA Tour and PIF last week. On its own, that’s good news, but it comes with a major—and potentially very messy—caveat:

“Some PGA Tour players” reportedly want LIV players to pay back the massive sums given to them by LIV Golf before being granted a return to their former employer.

RELATED: The diamond ball marker Jon Rahm got for winning LIV Golf’s individual title has an incredible secret inside

According to Bloomberg, other financial makeweights such as LIV players paying PGA Tour and DP World Tour fines, donating their money to charity or forfeiting future earnings have reportedly been floated, but LIV pros are said to be unwilling to agree to any deal that penalizes them for joining the disruptor league.

It should be noted that Golf Digest’s own sources have not independently confirmed these rumors, but fact and fiction have been difficult to parse throughout this ordeal. The one thing we can say for sure is that money (or “obnoxious greed” as Phil Mickelson once called it ) has been the driving force of the division since the very start.

So what comes next? As is the case with all disagreements, an eventual compromise. The speed and shape of that compromise, however, seemingly depends on the influence of the PGA Tour players endorsing financial sanctions for the LIV ex-pats. While the idea of LIV pros giving their career paydays to charity, having their future wages garnished or simply paying back money that already sits in their bank accounts seems as unrealistic as cats and dogs living together in harmony, if the voices calling for it are loud enough, this impasse could very well stretch on through the winter.
