Last month, I was blessed to join her inaugural cruise in Shanghai along with 2 other blogger friends and the team from Arpan Air to witness and experience how it’s like to ride this ravishing massive ship. I felt so excited since I’m already familiar with the Royal Caribbean brand. Whenever I think about Royal Caribbean, the 1st words that come to mind would be, fun, indulgence and luxury . I just love how they stay committed (50 years!) in making dream vacations come true.

Now with some technical stuff:

The Spectrum of the Seas is a humungous smart ship that can accommodate a maximum of 5,622 guests and 1,551 international crew. It’s sized at 135 feet wide and 1,139 feet long and runs on a cruising speed of 22 knots. It has a total of 16 decks with 17 guest elevators, 2,137 staterooms and 4 bow thrusters with 4,694 horsepower each.

… Ok, ok, enough with the technical info overload. Let’s move on to the fun part – The ship’s highlights!

First, allow me to show you my private abode during that week-long dream cruise. It’s a stateroom with a balcony that comfortably fits 2 people. Ideal for couples and solo travellers. The size was just right for me. I also loved spending quiet afternoons at my veranda. Finally some quality “me time” I deserve.

Ship Attractions

Like with all Royal Caribbean International ships, you’ll never run out of things to do. Never a dull moment. Seriously, 5 days ain’t enough to experience all rides and join all activities. Imagine being in a floating city brimming with all the amusing activities you can ever imagine. I honestly do not know which feature to show you first, since I find them all fascinating.  Anyways, here are the attractions which make this ship lit AF! haha!

Retail Therapy on Deck 5

Aside from the ship highlights mentioned above, Duty-Free Shopping at Deck 5 was also equally epic. Truly a Shopaholic’s Paradise. All my favourite luxury brands were all in 1 place, so I just had to give-in as the prices here are also lower compared their stores back on land. Here I was able to buy a set of my favourite skin care items, some cutesy stuffed kitties as well as jewellery. Super happy with my stuff!

Cruising is definitely addicting, especially when you realize that it’s 100 x more fun than the usual tour because here, everything is right at your fingertips. Not to mention that feeling of literally detaching yourself from the world even for just a few days. Priceless! Right now, I’m already saving up to join at least a 5-day cruise from HK as a treat to myself.

Voyager of the Seas makes maiden call at Manila, Philippines

Luxury Cruise Ship Royal Caribbean International’s Voyager of the Seas visited Metro Manila for the first time for a 4-night cruise from Shenzen, China. The cruise ship arrived last July 20 with 3,600 guests onboard to tour the capital city of the Philippines. A traditional plaque exchange ceremony was officiated by Voyager of the Seas’ Captain Sindre Borsheim and Philippine authorities Mr. Francisquiel Mancile, Port Manager of Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and Mr. Patrick Chan, Vice President for Operations of Asian Terminals, Inc. to celebrate one of the largest ships to call at any of the Philippines’s port.

The orchids are located at the crater of an extinct volcano where they can also see lush greeneries and a hidden waterfall. After the breathtaking event, they will be served with traditional Filipino buffet lunch and snacks.

Manila is Philippines' capital city and the country's largest seaport. It has an excellent deep and sheltered harbour with built-up modern waterfront. On the south bank of Pasig river is situated the original city, Intramuros, established in 1571 by the Spanish, and containing unique examples of 17th-century Spanish architecture, together with encircling wall begun in 1590. During World War II, lots of the old city was destroyed. From Manila tourists can also visit Malacanang Palace, Taal volcano and Pagsanjan Falls.

The Philippine capital of Manila was established by King Philip II of Spain. In the years which followed, the Spanish successfully prevented the Portuguese, Chinese and Dutch from settling in the Philippines. But the British occupied Manila during the Seven Years' War, though they agreed to return it to Spain under 1763 Treaty of Paris. During World War II, the Japanese took control of Manila, and eventually the United States recaptured the islands and returned them to Philippines. In 1946, the country was granted full independence. The first president was elected, Manuel Roxas. In more recent history was the exile of former leader Ferdinand Marcos and new Democratic leadership.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport also serves the airline Air Juan that provides regularly scheduled domestic flights linking directly Manila City with  Subic Bay Freeport , Boracay Island (Caticlan) , Busuanga Bay and Puerto Galera. Air Juan's flights are direct (without passing through other airports) which allows tourists to arrive from Manila directly to their local hotels and resorts.

Port Manila

Port Manila (officially Pantalan ng Maynila) has several large facilities and terminals serving the maritime shipping trade. The port serves the entire Manila metro area. The port is located on Manila Bay and is ranked as Philippines' largest seaport. The port is operated by Philippine Ports Authority (state-owned corporation), which manages most of the country's ports.

Manila Bay's entrance has width 19 km (12 ml) expanding to 48 km (30 ml). Mariveles (Bataan province) is the port's anchorage area. Port Manila is composed of North Harbor, South Harbor, and MICT (Container Terminal).

  • North Harbor seaport is in the Tondo Area and has 7 docking piers (numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14). North Harbor port is accessible through Radial Road 10. The North Port Passenger Terminal is the facility that serves all ferries and cruise ships to Manila.
  • South Harbor seaport is in the Port Area and has 5 docking piers (numbers 3, 5, 9, 13, 15), South Harbor is accessible by Bonifacio Drive road. The port's passenger terminal ("Eva Macapagal Super Terminal") is between piers 13 and 15 and also serves as the 2GO Ferry company's main hub.
  • Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) is located between North Harbor and South Harbor and is accessible via MICT South Access Road. In 2011, the MICT Terminal was ranked world's 38th largest container port (annual shipping traffic 3,26 million TEU-countainers). The 2014-inaugurated Berth 6 increased port's capacity by 18%.

In mid-October 2018, Philippine Ports Authority started a capacity improvement project at MICT (operated by International Container Terminal Services Inc). The project includes construction of 4 new berths (7, 8, 9, 10), all with max draft/water depth 14,5 m (48 ft), allowing docking of larger boxships . Terminal's berth expansion was funded by ICTSI Group at total cost USD 380+ million.

In addition to seaport's capacity improvements was the purchase of 16 new RTGs (rubber-tired gantry cranes, operational since April 2019) plus 2 super-post-Panamax quay cranes (dockside gantries) that can serve boxships with capacity over 22,000 TEUs. Terminal's current container-handling equipment includes 18 quay cranes and 58 RTGs (74 by 2020). The large dockside gantries are China-manufactured (by ZPMC-Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industry Co Ltd) and each has max reach 16 rows (across twin). The RTGs are standard-diesel and Japan-made (by Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding Co Ltd).

For season 2017,  Star Cruises  (Asian company owned by Genting Hong Kong) announced its first Manila homeport deployment (for roundtrip itineraries) of its vessel  SuperStar Virgo . The ship has 13 decks and 935 cabins (capacity 2400 passengers plus 1100 crew). It offers a 5-night / 6-day cruise itinerary ("Jewels of the South China Sea")  from Manila to Currimao-Laoag Philippines (colonial buildings, baroque churches, Pagudpud's white-sand beaches), Kaohsiung Taiwan (Chinese culture and cuisine) and Hong Kong China (world's most popular metro city / shopping, dining, nightlife). The ship's Manila roundtrips started in March 2017 (departures March 19 through May 29) and also during summer months. Start Cruises' "Early Bird Discount" booking prices start from PHP 24,500 (around USD 450) per person (double occupancy Inside Stateroom). Third and fourth passengers (Quad share cabins) received additional 50% discount.

An Inside Look at Royal Caribbean’s Training Center in the Philippines

royal caribbean cruise ship philippines

Royal Caribbean Cruises is operating a training facility in Maragondon Cavite, Philippines, managed by PHILCAMSAT - Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training. The company currently employs around 11.000 Filipino crew members working on board the world’s largest cruise ships and plans to hire up to 30.000 Pinoy crew in the following years. Therefore Royal Caribbean is investing in state-of-the-art training facility in Maragondon Cavite. At this point of time Royal Caribbean training facility powered by Philcanmsat is able to train 2000 crew members each month. This is the only training center in Asia accredited by the Belgium Maritime Inspectorate proving the type of quality that is needed by the Maritime industry. Right now up to 90% of Filipino crew members working for Royal Caribbean are coming thru this facility.

Richard Pruitt Vice president of Safety & environmental stewardship for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd said “Our crew members that come from Philippines make 60% of our work force, by far the largest nationality that we have onboard, and it seems it makes a lot of sense to Us that we put world class training Centre in their country near the capital, so that people coming as a new recruits or to renew their basic safety training they can come here.”

Karen Avelino Executive director of Philcamsat said “We have first the basic training. We also do the fire house exercises, and the operations of the rescue boats. But what we have here is that at the end of the training you must be able to do everything."

Take a look the video of behind the scenes and find out how Royal Caribbean trains its crew members in variety of safety onboard exercises’ across their fleet.

Award-Winning Philippines Cruises

The Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia made up of an archipelago between the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea. This chain of islands is home to sandy beaches and gorgeous teal waters swirling around craggy rock formations. Its lively cities and beautiful skyscrapers are along the lines of what you might expect from a country that’s not far from the glamorous cities of Singapore and Hong Kong (two other ports you’re likely to visit during a cruise to the Philippines).

When you cruise the Philippines, you’ll sail to this gorgeous island nation in comfort before an exciting day in one of its intriguing ports. Once you step onto the soil of the Philippines while on a Southeast Asia cruise , you will be immediately drawn to its tropical beauty and charmed by the friendly locals you meet.

Please Note: While we don't currently sail to the Philippines, you can still discover the beauty of the region on one of our Southeast Asia cruises . Browse our cruises to Southeast Asia below.

Cruise Philippines for Beautiful Beaches and Dynamic Cities

Whether you love lounging on the beach or feeling the buzz of city life, you’ll find both during a cruise to the Philippines. From sleepy beach towns to countryside escapes and busy city centers, you’ll experience different aspects of the local culture in each port.

Philippines City Life

The Philippines is more than just island lifestyle and beach bliss. You’ll also find energetic cities buzzing with people, cuisine, and commerce. Manila in particular is a can’t-miss city to see when you cruise the Philippines, known for its blend of colonial and modern architecture punctuated with gleaming skyscrapers.

Beaches and Volcanoes

Beyond the port harbors of the Philippines, you’ll find incredible natural wonders. Relax on gorgeous beaches, like the white sands of Boracay and Puerto Princesa. From Manila, it’s easy to travel to the vibrant green Hidden Valley or Taal Lake and Volcano, two natural elements that complement each other in a mesmerizing way.

Countryside

Explore the Philippines’ lush countryside, which is home to fields of green, historic plantations, and villas with spring-fed pools. Combine your trip to the country with traditional dining to try some of the delicious Filipino cuisine the country is known for.

Featured Philippines Cruise Ports

During a Philippines cruise, you’ll stop in at least one of the following cities: Boracay, Manila, Puerto Princesa, or Ilocos. Each of these ports of call offer a very different type of experience. In Boracay and Puerto Princesa, you’ll get a glimpse of the country’s magnificent beaches and island lifestyle. In Manila, get a taste of the bustling city life of the Philippines, and in Ilocos, enjoy historical experiences. Depending on your itinerary,  you might even overnight in Manila.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

We sail to the Philippines in the months of December and January. This is an ideal time to visit since the tropical weather is still hot, but not stifling, and it’s before the rainy season begins. Since the weather is hot and humid, you’ll want to pack light, breathable clothing in natural fibers like cotton and linen. The style of dress is generally more conservative in the Philippines than you may be used to in the U.S. and other countries, so keep that in mind when packing.

Don’t forget to pack for the other ports you’ll be visiting during your Philippines cruise. Most will require similar clothing, but if you head farther north and plan to venture into any mountainous regions while in port, you’ll likely want some warmer layers.

The ports you’ll visit depend on the itinerary you choose. You can cruise to the Philippines on one of our Vietnam, Philippines, and Hong Kong itineraries, where you’ll sail between Hong Kong and Singapore, or cruise roundtrip from Singapore. Along the way, you’ll visit the beautiful Philippines cruise ports of call as well as cities in Vietnam. You’ll also have an overnight port of call in both Singapore and Hong Kong. On the roundtrip itinerary from Singapore that sails to the Philippines and back to Singapore, you’ll have an overnight in Hong Kong, and you’ll visit Malaysia and China.
