Netflix 'A Tourist's Guide to Love': Where to Get Amanda's Outfits

Lena Finkel

Rachael Leigh Cook, aka our favorite 90s rom-com queen, has returned for a fun Netflix flick, A Tourist’s Guide to Love .

The film follows Amanda (played by Cook) as she travels to Vietnam in the hopes of getting the Eat, Pray, Love experience after getting an unpleasant surprise from her boyfriend.

Of course, it isn’t long until Amanda meets a hot tour guide and now she must choose between her comfortable boyfriend back home and her new vacation romance.

Throughout Amanda’s trip, she rocks a ton of florals and ruffles — aka the classic rom-com wardrobe (which is apparently its own trend now ?!).

Her dresses are sweet and feminine and we can’t help but want every single one!

Rachael Leigh Cook Fell in Love on the Set of Her Latest Rom-Com

A Tourist's Guide to Love takes laughs and love to Vietnam.

Sasidis Sasisakulporn/Netflix

"What I knew about Vietnam is that I wanted to go and that I had Instagram envy of my friends' travel vacation photos there," Rachael Leigh Cook says, laughing, her signature gleaming smile on display. "I was excited to go."

Netflix's latest rom-com,  A Tourist's Guide to Love , available to stream on Apr. 21, has the distinction of being the very first original film from the streaming giant to be made in Vietnam, a country that's not only becoming an Instagram favorite, but a place that's shedding a reputation marred by war and conflict. Instead of the Vietnam depicted in history books and grainy PBS documentaries, Cook — who produced  A Tourist's Guide to Love  in addition to starring in it — wanted to show the country in a new way and ensure that her trademark brand of joy, love, and laughs felt fresh.

And it wasn't just Cook that wanted to give viewers a peek into a country that still seems shrouded in mystery to many. Her co-star, Scott Ly (a first-generation Vietnamese American born in Houston, Texas), was just as excited to show the world the new Vietnam.

"The people, the taste of food," he says of what he wanted to showcase most. "But just to capture a little bit of how my parents lived is enough. I'm excited about that."

Cook agreed, saying that the pride that Ly felt as a Vietnamese American actor working on a project in Vietnam translated in the film, which chronicles Cook's character Amanda Riley as she navigates a business merger that involves Ly's Sinh Thach, whose family owns a local tour company.

"When your character Sinh is talking about, 'I put so much pressure on myself to show the best possible version of Vietnam,' I could tell in the way you delivered those lines that you were putting that same pressure on yourself to deliver through this movie," Cook says of Sinh's passion for showing every aspect of his Vietnam, from the crowded, colorful markets of Hồ Chí Minh City to the verdant rice paddies of Hà Giang.

All the while, viewers get a look at Vietnam as it is now, something writer Eirene Donohue (the daughter of a Vietnamese mother and an American Naval officer) wanted to emphasize, telling  Cinema Blend , "There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren't about the trauma of war. It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told."

Viewers familiar with the Vietnam of Anthony Bourdain documentaries will find plenty to love — something that Cook recalls with utter joy in her eyes.

"My favorite food that I haven't had as good a version of since I've been back is bánh xèo. I ate it every single day we were in Hoi An and Da Nang," she remembers. "That crispy pancake with the vegetables in it, sort of folded into a ... you fold it in thirds. And then, it has beautiful dipping sauces. I'm still hungry thinking about it."

Food is one way to bring an audience in, but the distinct style and fashion of Vietnam got the spotlight, too. In one pivotal scene involving a Tết celebration, Cook wears a traditional áo dài.

"Oh my gosh. It is stunning. I tried to steal it. They definitely did not let me. It was beautifully made in collaboration with our costume designer, in terms of the color scheme and fabrics, but it was made by a local artist," she says of wearing an áo dài for the first time. "They did an absolutely beautiful job. How incredible is it that you can have the effect of wearing a dress but also be able to wear pants? And it is infinitely flattering."

That blend of tradition and modernity is something A Tourist's Guide to Love highlights throughout, not only with áo dài and food, but simply by showing places like the Hội An waterfront illuminated by the city's trademark lanterns and a temple instead of the Golden Hand Bridge in Ba Na Hills. Sure, it's something most people visiting would want to see, but the film makes it a point to show things off the beaten path, away from the strict itineraries and "must-see" lists that Cook's character can't seem to get away from.

"We wanted to give people a real variety of experience within one country. And that's one of the natively incredible things about Vietnam is that you can have so many different experiences in one country," Cook says. "When we go from the bustling city life of Ho Chi Minh City to the UNESCO World Heritage site that is Hội An, to the beautiful beach of Da Nang. Then we went up to Hà Giang, by the border to China. We had that beautiful day by the waterfall that I'll never forget in my whole life. And then onto Hanoi, which has a completely different energy. It is so much quieter than Ho Chi Minh City. Man, we're lucky. We're so lucky."

Ly hopes that the film will encourage tourism of all kinds, much like the tour that his and Cook's characters take. "If people go to Vietnam, there are so many things to see, like what Rachael was saying," he says before giving a nod to his fictional vocation. "But if you get a tour guide that knows what they're doing, you'll really get to experience everything; the food, different culture, different places."

Aside from the travel aspect of the film, Cook gets to flex her rom-com chops once again. After 2020's  Love, Guaranteed  and 2021's  He's All That , she's right back in the groove that fans have come to know and love — and loving it for herself, too.

"I can't seem to help myself. I can't stray too far from the genre. It keeps being where my heart feels at its center. It's where my sensibilities lie. It's where my personal tastes lie. It's positive, feel-good content," she says of staying true to herself and the genre that's given her so much. "And I love love. I don't know what to tell you. I feel really blessed that we get a twofer in the sense that it's a travel movie and it's a beautiful love story."

It's not often that a love story gets an interracial couple, something that Ly's very aware of — and something he's endlessly proud of. Not only is the film an opportunity for him to celebrate his heritage, but it also offers a chance for audiences to see that a leading man isn't necessarily just one kind of actor.

"When I was reading the script, I was like, 'This is a moment where I could actually really represent Asian men, Vietnamese men,'" he says of a particular shirtless beach scene that comes at 50 seconds into the trailer (for anyone wondering). "I trained so hard for it."

Although he was born in America, Ly reflects on going to Vietnam like children of immigrants often try to do. In fact, for many, making the trip is referred to as "di về," a term that hit Ly hard when he thought about how layered it was for him as a Vietnamese American actor.

"That means, in translation, going back home. And it means so much to me," he says of the phrase, which is used whether or not the person is, in fact, going home or just visiting. "One of the things I remembered when I was on the airplane and I touched down in Vietnam, it was like I rooted myself to where my parents came from. And that it was very emotional for me when I just landed. And then I was like, 'Let's go. I'm here to represent. I'm here to do my work. I'm blessed to be here.' It meant a lot to me. Hopefully, it shows in the movie and it shows in me."

Cook and Ly hope that the film prompts anyone planning a getaway to give Vietnam a chance — and the two think that the fictional itinerary would be great for real-life.

"Scott, do you think people will try to do the tour that we did? Like at all?" Cook asks her co-star between joking about rom-coms (Ly insists  Dumb and Dumber  counts as one and, shockingly, doesn't bring up  She's All That  even once).

"100%," Ly says confidently. "Of course."

Rachael Leigh Cook Falls For Vietnam — and a Local — in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" Trailer

tourist guide to love outfits

One woman's real-life story of fate and exploration is getting the rom-com treatment. "A Tourist's Guide to Love," from writer Eirene Tran Donohue and director Steven K. Tsuchida, will begin streaming on April 21 on Netflix — and POPSUGAR has an exclusive first look at the trailer. Starring Rachael Leigh Cook, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" follows a travel executive on an undercover assignment in Vietnam shortly after an unexpected breakup. While there, the lines between work and pleasure blend as she finds herself falling for her tour guide, played by Scott Ly.

"Whenever I tell people about how I met my husband while traveling in Vietnam, they always say that it sounds like a movie, and so it's pretty surreal to actually turn it into one," writer Donohue tells POPSUGAR. "And while the story has changed a lot from my real life, the emotional truth is the same. That feeling when you meet someone who makes you realize that you can do or be anything. I'm so grateful to have found a partner who inspires and supports me and who, after 22 years together, keeps my life a romantic comedy instead of a drama."

Highlighting the rich culture of Vietnam was important for Donohue, and for the film's star and producer Cook, who fans first fell in love with in 1999's "She's All That." Filming the movie was the first time the actor and producer visited Vietnam, and she praises the country's people as being "so friendly, inclusive, loving, creative, and wholly unique." She tells POPSUGAR, "I feel very lucky to have been embraced by the people in the creative community there while we were making this film."

Fans have been falling back in love with rom-coms over the past few years, and Cook appreciates the unique take on the genre "A Tourist's Guide to Love" presents. She explains, "The aim of this film was not just to tell a love story, but to capture the sheer joy that can come with people from different cultures coming together and connecting over a shared, totally unique, and beautiful experience. This is a movie that is as much about loving life as it is another person."

"A Tourist's Guide to Love" Inspiration

"A Tourist's Guide to Love" Inspiration

In addition to being ripped from her own life, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" writer Donohue says she found inspiration in "classic old Hollywood movies." Explains Donohue to POPSUGAR, "I was a big fan of Audrey Hepburn. So 'Roman Holiday' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' were a big influence. Then of course the classic '90s rom coms. 'Pretty Woman,' 'While You Were Sleeping' and 'Sleepless in Seattle.' More recently, I've definitely been inspired by 'Crazy Rich Asians.' For me it's really important to make sure that the romance is central and also that the main character isn't just interested in finding a man, but that they are searching for love. And that the love they find is worthy of them. I want the audience to emotionally connect with the characters and to feel like that big love is real and that it's possible for them too. Everyone deserves a big love."

A Tourist's Guide To Love: I Watched Rachael Leigh Cook's New Rom-Com And Have So Many Thoughts

Travel and romance? What could be better?

the stars of a tourist's guide to love

For many movie fans, any time is the right time for a rom-com. And, as lots of people who make good use of their Netflix subscription will certainly know by now, the streamer has been and continues to be home to a number of the best romantic comedies , including films made exclusively for the service. Now, a new entry among the 2023 new movie releases has, once again, brought romance to Netflix with Rachael Leigh Cook’s new film, A Tourist’s Guide to Love .

Also starring Scott Ly, the movie centers on travel executive Amanda, whose company sends her to check out a Vietnamese tour company before they buy it, by posing as a regular tourist. Obviously, inspiring experiences and romantic shenanigans with her handsome guide, Sinh, soon ensue, changing her life forever. This is the second rom-com Cook has starred in for the streamer (after 2020’s Love, Guaranteed and not counting her part in the He’s All That cast ), and I had a lot of thoughts while watching the travel-focused film. So, let’s get to what the romance brought up for me!

the opening of a tourist's guide to love

I Want To Go Anywhere So Badly Now

Seriously. That first shot of the movie (which you can see in the photo above) really hit me in my “It’s finally spring, I need to get out of the house” travel feels. I mean, look at the golden hour light that’s hitting those palm trees!

Awww. It's Nice Seeing Ben Feldman Again!

Shout out to all my Superstore fans! His character here is slightly infuriating, but it’s still good to see the former Jonah Simms again.

amanda cries after breaking up with john in a tourist's guide to love

No Relationship "Hiatus" Is A Good Idea

Speaking of Feldman’s John being slightly infuriating… How does any full-grown adult think that asking for a relationship “hiatus” is a good idea? Because it’s not, alright? In fact, it’s one of the dumbest ideas possible, unless you’re also prepared to sit down with your partner and figure out the exact set of rules you both have to adhere to during said break, and decide how long it’s going to be until you figure out whether to get back together or not. None of which he was ready to do. DUMB. I’m glad Amanda immediately broke up with him!

Sinh Quickly Said Some Stuff That Really Got To Me

Oof. I have always thought of traveling as an escape, but when Sinh was explaining what he sees as the difference between a “traveler” and a “tourist” to Amanda, and said, “You never know how long life’s gonna be. Why waste it on escape?” Yeah. That got to me, and I imagine it may have gotten to other viewers, as well.

sinh helps amanda across the street in a tourist's guide to love

NO CROSSWALKS?!?!

I am NOT here for this, OK? But, only in a general real-world sense, because it did give Sinh and Amanda a good reason to hold hands early in the movie, as he helped the terrified traveler cross a very busy road. Convenient. Veeeeeery convenient.

I Love That Amanda Wore Flats Throughout Her Whole Trip

Full stop. Only take out heels on a trip (especially when you’re in a place where you’ll be sightseeing and don’t know the location well) if you can count on only having to walk from a car to a building and then sitting down. Even in that case, I’d have backup flats ready in my bag. You never know when you’ll need to run!

amanda and sinh walk down an alley in a tourist's guide to love

No Thank You To This Dark Alleyway Walk, OK?

So many cozy, sweet rom-coms have scenes in them where the heroine should never, ever do the thing suggested by the hero. In this case, Sinh tells Amanda he has something to show her, and proceeds to lead her down a dark alleyway.

Now, because this is the aforementioned adorable romantic story, we know this isn’t going to turn into a horror movie scenario, but can we stop using moments like this to “prove” how into the hero the leading lady is? My guess is that it’s so the audience can see that she basically trusted him right away, but in real life following this guy in that moment would be just as dumb as asking for a dating hiatus, and stuff like this takes me out of the rom-com action every time.

Why Is Their Trip To My Son Sanctuary Making Me Cry?

Maybe it’s the music? Or, maybe it’s because I’ve never seen anything that old in real life.

The Scenery Definitely Elevated This Rom-Com

Much like Amanda said, “I want more of this.” Pretty much every moment showed us gorgeous scenery or intriguing customs and celebrations, and that’s why we love a good travel movie, right?

amanda and her tour group in a tourist's guide to love

Not One Person Looked Hot The Entire Time

OK, I’m sure the filmmakers didn’t want the cast to look gross throughout the whole movie, but to have people talk about how steamy it supposedly was and how it could be “exhausting” to sightsee in such weather made no sense, when not a single person looked hot during the movie.

In fact, the only time anyone was wet was when they were at the beach. Could we not spritz water on some foreheads? Add an extra-dewy cheek to a couple of the travelers? Have someone need to sit and fan themselves while touring around this basically tropical nation? Show don’t tell, movie!

I Want To Travel In Amanda's Wardrobe

It’s quite fitting to bring this up right after talking about how, apparently, all of these characters feel the heat of Vietnam without ever breaking a sweat. That is very much not the case with me on any summer trip, which is why I tend not to wear anything that could be deemed “nice” while traveling.

Sure, I wear my good t-shirts, but I know that by the end of a day of walking around a sweltering city I’m going to be sweating off sunscreen at an alarming rate and gritty as all get out, so I have never dared wear anything as cute as Amanda does during this movie. She’s all cute tops and pants, and adorable dresses that probably need to be dry-cleaned, and I loved every outfit.

the scarf sinh bought amanda in a tourist's guide to love

Of Course Sinh Bought Amanda The Scarf!

I do so love it when a seemingly random moment turns into a romantic gesture! Who else watched that scarf haggling scene in the market that took place near the beginning of Amanda’s trip and just knew that Sinh was going to buy that scarf she wasn’t able to get? I didn’t imagine that it would end up being the final thing that would reveal his feelings for her and bring them back together after he found out she wasn’t just a regular traveler, but it felt good to be right about how important that scarf would end up being to their love story.

Rachael Leigh Cook Talks Rom-Coms & Queer Inclusion at A Tourist's Guide to Love Premiere

tourist guide to love outfits

Alongside her Netflix co-stars, the She's All That alum and veritable rom-com queen chats with Out on the red carpet.

No, romantic comedies aren't dead. And Netflix's newest rom-com, A Tourist's Guide to Love , is proof of that.

See on Instagram

Produced and starring She's All That icon Rachael Leigh Cook (one of this generation's veritable and most beloved rom-com queens) with a screenplay from Eirene Donohue and direction by Steven K. Tsuchida, A Tourist's Guide to Love tells the story of a newly-single Los Angeles travel executive named Amanda (Cook) who takes a life-changing trip to Vietnam for work and to get her mind off of a tough, recent breakup — all while finding love and romance along the way in the form of her tour guide Sinh (Scott Ly).

The film is inclusive in many ways, with a lesbian couple and their family prominently featured throughout, as well as having a Southeast Asian actor (Ly) in the role of the romantic lead, something that a lot of rom-coms in the U.S. are still catching up on.

"To me, it doesn't feel that different," Cook told Out at the film's red-carpet premiere in LA about crafting A Tourist's Guide to Love for a whole new generation of diverse rom-com lovers. "To be making a movie in a beautiful place with a beautiful person."

Watch Out 's red-carpet interview with Cook, alongside her co-stars Missi Pyle, Jacqueline Correa, and Nondumiso Tembe, in the video below.

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ Review: A Wearyingly Familiar Trip

Rachael Leigh Cook stars in this bland rom-com as a travel executive exploring Vietnam and getting over a breakup.

  • Share full article

A man and woman, seated in a pedicab on a busy street, turn to face each other, each reaching a hand toward the other. Directly behind them is a man in a green-and-white shirt and black hat, and in the background are many other people on motorcycles.

By Elisabeth Vincentelli

The first thing we learn about Amanda (Rachael Leigh Cook) in “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is that she works for a high-end agency called Tourista World Travel. But nobody in this Netflix film even comments on the fact that “turista” is slang for vacation-wrecking diarrhea. That puzzling choice and its utter lack of consequences are the only surprise in Steven Tsuchida’s film, a rom-com that so scrupulously fulfills every cliché of the genre, it might as well have been devised by ChatGPT.

Amanda is dispatched to Vietnam to check out a small tour company that Tourista is considering buying to develop its market in the area. The assignment is also a good distraction: She was recently dumped by her dull accountant boyfriend, John (Ben Feldman). Going undercover as a regular tourist, albeit an extremely well-prepared one, she’s immediately drawn to the floppy-haired guide, Sinh (Scott Ly). He is the kind of dreamboat who has both abs and sensitivity, and can show Amanda not just his country’s beauty, but how to enjoy life.

Sinh eventually doffs his shirt at the beach and emerges from the water in resplendent slow motion, because the clichés here are as tightly packed in as tchotchkes in a traveler’s suitcase: Amanda is a perky American Type A; village elders are cute as buttons and wise as Yoda; street food is tantalizing; jaded Westerners rediscover themselves as they ditch their phones and bask in a rural experience made only sweeter by the knowledge that it’s temporary. The soundtrack’s catchy Vietnamese songs provide the only fizz in this otherwise flat concoction.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love Not rated. Running time: 1 hour 34 minutes. Watch on Netflix.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love review – a mindful and quietly charming romance film

A Tourist's Guide to Love review - a mindful and quietly charming romance film

This review of the Netflix film A Tourist’s Guide to Love does not contain spoilers.

You may discount A Tourist’s Guide to Love , and no one would blame you .  However, this new Netflix romance film has the ability to coax the approval out of you with the best of intentions, even if the enjoyment comes in spasmodic, charismatic bursts.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love review and plot summary

Rachel Leigh Cook of She’s All That and Josie and the Pussycats plays Amanda, a travel executive in Los Angeles. She is tasked with finding someone to vet a family-owned Vietnamese travel company called Saigon Silver Star to add to her employer’s portfolio. However, after her boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ), puts their relationship on hold after taking a job in Ohio, she takes the assignment herself.

The next day, Amanda is on a flight to Vietnam undercover. She has a list of items to cross off before reporting to her boss, Mona ( Galaxy Quest’s Missi Pyle ). When Amanda arrives, her bag is lost, but she is helped by Sinh ( Scott Ly ), the attractive nephew of the Saigon Silver Star owner. The strict and disciplined workaholic Amanda finds herself overcome by the region’s beauty. Also, under the spell of the unconventional and mindful Sinh, who knows nothing but living in the moment.

As romantic dramedies go, veteran television director Steven K. Tsuchida ( On My Block ) and writer Eirene Donohue tone down any obnoxious humor for atmosphere and an enjoyable quiet charm. Loosely based on the real-life experiences of Donohue, she puts forth a sense of love and respect for the setting. You won’t see the city of Vancouver turned into Vietnam here. The movie was shot in various locations around Vietnam, like multiple cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and others. So, you feel a sense of authenticity that takes you if not to another time then at least another place.

The movie has the usual Eat Pray Love tropes. Why no woman ever questions if a guy like Sinh uses the sites, sounds, and shirtless beach tours as a way to romance women is always beyond me. Or why everyone in these genre films has to end with a declaration of love other than a vacation romance? And when that ex-relationship travels halfway around the world to win you back, why not just kick them to the curb where they belong? However, Cook and Ly have some genuine chemistry, but it’s refreshing because they are apprehensive, even awkward, while building a rapport. That type of chance meeting that’s more realistic than a cinematic one.

A Tourist Guide to Love has obvious faults. For instance, a few too many music montages that you always see in the genre. The plot ignores just obvious human nature. There are some who would have an issue with getting what you paid for and not wanting an off-the-beaten-path experience. I mean, paying good money to go and stay at the tour guide’s grandmother’s house seems like a Yelp disaster. Still, this leads to some heartwarming moments.

Is A Tourist’s Guide to Love good or bad?

A Tourist’s Guide to Love is a slightly above-average streaming affair that was made for fans of the genre but succeeds because of its quiet charm.

Is A Tourist’s Guide to Love worth watching?

A Toursist’s Guide to Love is a flawed but quietly charming romance film that’s strictly for fans of the genre and a diversion for others. At the very least, you will enjoy the chemistry between Cook and Ly and its mindful nature.

How to Dress Like a Tourist

Dressing like a tourist is easy! A bright Hawaiian shirt is a classic look, but neon prints and souvenir t-shirts are also great shirt options. For bottoms, definitely go with khaki shorts or cargo shorts. Slip into a pair of white crew socks and strap your sandals over them to create an iconic tourist vibe. Don’t forget accessories like fanny packs, leis, straw hats, and multiple cameras to tie your look together!

Things You Should Know

  • Wearing a Hawaiian shirt is a classic way to stand out as a tourist. You could also pick a graphic T-shirt or a shirt with a loud, vibrant print.
  • Go for bottoms like khakis or cargo shorts. For a more tropical vacation vibe, opt for a colorful sarong.
  • Hold your items in a fanny pack and throw on some socks with sandals to complete the look.

Step 1 Slip on a bright Hawaiian shirt.

  • For example, try a shirt with a bright red and purple floral print.
  • If you can find something with neon colors, go with that!
  • A trick with florals is to choose them according to your height--for a petite size person, choose small floral prints; for average height, choose a medium floral print; and for plus size, larger or tall, choose a large floral print.

Step 2 Try a tank top or shirt that promotes a popular vacation spot instead.

  • You could also go with something that promotes a popular company that caters to tourists, like Señor Frog’s or Hard Rock Café.

Step 3 Wear a T-shirt that advertises your high school or college sports team.

  • Bonus points if the name of your hometown is written right on the shirt!

Step 4 Opt for any shirt with a vibrant print.

  • Try an over-sized plaid button-up with short sleeves in the brightest colors you can find.
  • A neon tie-dye top is also a great choice.

Step 5 Wear a swim suit top as outerwear to a costume party.

  • Wrap a sarong around your waist and slip into a pair of flip-flops to complete your outfit.

Step 1 Wear khaki shorts for a classic take on the look.

  • Pair your khaki shorts with an oversized Hawaiian shirt for an iconic tourist look.

Step 2 Put on a pair of high-waisted “mom-style” bottoms instead.

  • Tuck a pink tank top with “Hawaii” scrawled on the front into a pair of mom-style, knee-length khaki shorts and you’re all set!

Step 3 Wear cargo pants if you want to include lots of accessories.

  • You can go with any color, but khaki or tan cargos would be very authentic.
  • Cargo skirts are another option you might prefer. Just be aware that they're not the most flattering style for skirts because their bulky pockets stick out. You'll also need to opt for a top that hits at your waist, you don't want to add bulk by tucking things in.

Step 4 Wrap a colorful sarong around your waist for a tropical vacation vibe.

  • Strap on a second fanny pack for extra oomph.
  • If you can’t get your hands on a fanny pack, an overstuffed backpack will also do the trick. [4] X Research source

Step 2 Wear white crew socks with sandals or loafers.

  • Strap on an old-school camcorder for a retro tourist vibe.
  • Keep one of your cameras in your hands at all times. Photograph everything excessively, of course!

Step 4 Top off your outfit with a huge straw or safari hat.

About This Article

Neepa Sikdar

If you want to dress like a tourist, stick to obvious, flashy clothes that peg you as a foreigner. Go for a short-sleeved button-up shirt with a floral print or a vibrant pattern on it. Or, wear a souvenir t-shirt that promotes the location you’re in, like one that says, “I love New York.” Pair your loud shirt with khaki or beach shorts to go full tourist. If you’re near the beach, wander around in a bikini and sarong. You can also add a tourist accessory, like a fanny pack, a camera around your neck, oversized sunglasses, or a big safari hat, to complete your look. Take a walk outside the Vogue offices and you’re liable to see dozens upon dozens of tourists milling about, dressed in a uniform of a white T-shirt, jean shorts, and running shoes. It’s hard to look put-together in a new city, especially when comfort is key.

Lily Collins and her husband, Charlie McDowell, however, proved that tourist dressing doesn’t need to make you stick out like a sore thumb. While out and about in London, the duo opted for somewhat matching outfits that helped them blend into their surroundings like seasoned proffesionals.

London UNITED KINGDOM EXCLUSIVE Emily In London The British American Actress and Emily in Paris star Lily Collins...

Collins and McDowell each opted for a dark gray sweater, which Collins wore over a light blue button-up shirt. They both wore jeans—his dark wash and hers light. The duo also donned khaki jackets: McDowell in a chore silhouette and Collins in a calf-length trench coat. She also carried a denim Diorstar hobo bag with a gold chain strap.

Ready for rain, the Emily In Paris star toted a small black umbrella while her husband covered his head with a baseball cap. And both chose comfortable, durable shoes that didn’t sacrifice their clout: she wore white sneakers, and he opted for Salomons.

Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell proved that it’s possible to be well prepared without looking like total dorks.

Why Trust PEOPLE?

People / Getty / Gwyneth Paltrow / Instagram

As a travel writer, my suitcase is nearly always half-packed. Long flights demand comfort, but new sights and cities demand style . To complicate matters, I’m a maximalist, so traditional travel advice to cram a small capsule wardrobe into a backpack never quite appeals to me, even if I have to fight the luggage scale when checking in for my flight.

Packing properly for any trip can be daunting, whether you’re throwing together a duffel for a girls’ weekend or filling a checked bag  for a multi-month jaunt all over Europe. Still, my adventures across multiple countries, climates, and time zones taught me to reach for certain staples — like comfortable walking shoes and a reliable crossbody purse — time and time again. While nailing down my perfect travel wardrobe, I turned to on-the-go celebrities like Taylor Swift and Emily Blunt for inspiration.

A packing list comprised of versatile dresses, flowy pants, maxi skirts, and breezy shirts can go a long way — literally. Read on for the best celeb-inspired travel clothes for women to pack for your upcoming trips, as determined by shopper insights, professional style writers, celebrity research, and more.

Dresses give you plenty of bang for your buck when it comes to traveling. For one, they tend to be flexible compared to other clothing items: You can dress them up or down more effectively to target a specific dress code. Chic maxi dresses reigned supreme last summer, and Meghan Markle recently elevated  that trend in a silky high-neck maxi dress — stylish enough for a formal engagement but breezy enough for an afternoon in the sun.

Dresses of varying lengths also tend to be more conducive to layering. While summer may be “sundress season,” and we see celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow reaching for transitional midi styles in spring, the right travel dress can be an effective staple in your winter wardrobe, too. You can keep the style in your cold-weather repertoire by winterizing the look like Emily Ratajkowski . Opt for a darker colorway, chunky boots, and maybe a sweater.

The Drop Women’s Britt Tiered Maxi Tent Dress

This tiered maxi dress has an array of 1,900+ perfect five-star ratings on Amazon for its airiness — and rave reviews from multiple PEOPLE writers . It’s such a classic silhouette for all occasions, and it has the most coveted design detail on dresses: pockets. Shoppers do note that there’s little stretch, so consider your bust size when ordering.

Sizes: XXS–5X | Materials: 100% Tencel Lyocell | Colors: 18

Editors Say

“I bought this maxi dress from The Drop when it was on sale, and I’m going to buy two more at full price — that’s how much I love it. In fact, I have to force myself not to wear it multiple times a week. It’s comfortable, lightweight, and flattering for my short, curvy body. It even has pockets and adjustable straps that can be crossed in the back. The best part, though? I don’t have to wear a bra!” — Kayla Kitts , shopping editor

Linen Roll Tab Dollman Midi Dress

Chico's

An ankle-skimming midi always comes in handy, and a linen fabric is an excellent choice for temperature regulation: cooling in warmer climates yet cozy in cooler ones. This relaxed, button-down frock comes in whimsical watermelon and khaki hues. It even has adjustable, oversized sleeves for added comfort.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 100% linen | Colors: 2

Skinny Strap Seamless Mini Slip

Free People

Free People excels in lightweight, flattering, multi-use dresses. Most pieces in their slip category — like this itty-bitty seamless LBD — can be worn as an undergarment, dress, or top. (Just tuck it in!) Each slip truly compresses down to nothing, making it the ultimate space-saving garment.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: 92% nylon, 8% spandex | Colors: 3

Roxy Golden Dawn Dress

Everybody needs a comfortable floral sundress to throw on in warmer climates, especially after a sunburn. Whether you frequent the beach in your travels or just want something soft that wears in well over time, this Roxy pick is built for comfort.

Available Sizes: M, L | Materials: Viscose | Colors: 1

Tencel Jersey Tank Maxi Dress

This Quince pick has a soft, comfy stretch ideal for long days on your feet, and is even made of biodegradable fabric. With six colorways and a  lightweight and sleeveless silhouette, this dress almost guarantees plenty of use.

Sizes: XS–XL | Materials: Tencel, spandex | Colors: 6

The right flowy pants can make the ultimate base layer, whether you’re on a nine-hour flight or dressing to the nines. Loose, roomier pants have been all the rage this year, with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence , Zendaya , and Emily Blunt all sporting various wide-leg styles.

Similarly, breezy white maxi skirts are majorly on trend right now (and always), stylist Liz Teich told PEOPLE. Just look at Katie Holmes stepping out in NYC. She exemplifies how airy styles can be  great for warmer weather, but still look polished. Plus, the lighter fabrics are literally lighter in your bag, so why not throw in another?

Tronjori High Waist Casual Wide Leg Palazzo Pants

This Amazon pick embodies the quintessential palazzo pant we’ve all bookmarked on Pinterest. The wide leg and high waist are timeless, and the pair comes in a whopping 31 different colorways, plus tall and petite variations.

Sizes: XS–XXL, short and long options | Materials: Polyester | Colors: 31

Hermoza Rachel Skirt Dress

While this one’s more of a splurge, its multifunctionality makes it a worthy all-in-one piece for any vacation. As a frequent traveler and Hawai’i resident, I was absolutely flabbergasted (and fascinated) when I found out this floral maxi skirt/dress hybrid is made of durable swimsuit material.

Pair it with the matching swimsuit top for a striking two-piece set by the beach, wear it as a vibrant maxi dress to dinner, or style the skirt alone with a gauzy button-down and sandals for a jaunt through town. Of course, I love how convenient it is to wash and dry for travels, too.

Sizes: XS–L | Materials: Polyester, elastane | Colors: 1

Nashalyly Chiffon High-Waisted Pleated Skirt

This shopper-favorite maxi skirt has over 5,000 five-star ratings from Amazon customers, who note that you’ll want to size up for the best fit. Reviewers appreciate the skirt’s easy movement, comfortable elastic waist, and how many outfits they can build with it.

Sizes: S–3XL | Materials: Chiffon | Colors: 44

Daily Practice by Anthropologie Parachute Pants

Anthropologie

These pants are my personal go-to. I wear them to work in, to work out in, and to casual gatherings and nights out with friends. Most crucially, I wear them every single time I pass through an airport. They’re incredibly comfortable, lightweight (I tend to overheat on travel days), and adaptable, with plenty of pockets for easy ID and passport access. I’ve bought them in multiple colors, from neutrals to bolds.

Sizes: XXS–3X plus petite sizing | Materials: Nylon | Colors: 9

Even if you’re wearing the same pair of jeans day in, day out for the duration of your ten-day stint to Australia, Greece, or wherever you’re traveling, the right top can make a similar foundation feel like an entirely different look. First, you’ll want a collection of sleek, basic tanks and tops for ultimate versatility. Or perhaps a nautical, striped button down, ideally summoning visions of boat days and beachside barbecues. (Oh, and easy sun protection.) As Jessica Alba proves with white jeans and coordinating sneakers, the look is seasonal and sophisticated .

And is there anything better than wearing a delicate eyelet blouse on a hot summer day? A breezy blouse can serve as a dressy swimsuit cover-up at the beach. It can also keep your wardrobe work-friendly while on a Zoom meeting across time zones, or give a romantic vibe during date night.

Wear it loose like Taylor Swift out for a summer walk, or tucked in like Jennifer Aniston at dinner in Paris. Either way, a casual blouse might just be a better companion on your vacation than your plus one.

Wild Fable Cap Sleeve Ruched Side Seam T-Shirt

This pullover top can be styled in a variety of ways, making it a must-have on any trip with limited packing space. The subtle side ruching and cap sleeve add some feminine detail that dress it up for more elevated occasions, but it’s definitely casual enough to rock on a daily basis. As another PEOPLE writer noted , the cap sleeve is an ideal middle ground between a tank and short sleeve — which might be why Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift are so fond of the style.

Sizes: XXS–4X | Materials: Recycled polyester, spandex | Colors: 4

H&M Top with Eyelet Embroidery Sleeves

A simple eyelet short-sleeve top can serve you on many occasions, whether jetting off on a day trip or trekking to your regular weekend brunch spot. At only $20, this adorable H&M puff-sleeve is just frothy enough to add a little je ne sais quoi , but has a  French simplicity at its core.

Sizes: XS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 3

Gap Modern Mock Neck

Deal alert.

This Gap tank is up to 60 percent off in a range of neutral and stripe patterns for a limited time.

There’s never a bad time to stock up on flattering basics like this Gap tank. Available in regular, tall, and petite sizes, this Meghan Markle -esque mock-neck top has a straight silhouette and slim fit, and truly goes with everything .

Sizes: XXS–XXL, in regular, tall, and petite | Materials: 58% cotton, 39% modal, 3% spandex | Colors: 5

AE Perfect Button-Up Shirt

American Eagle

Right now, this American Eagle button-up is 60 percent off in all colors.

Okay, we’ll admit it: We never quite got over the coastal grandmother trend. And why should we? The whole point is that it’s timeless, classic, and elegant whether you’re going all-in on a preppy look or simply throwing on a striped button-down as a cover-up after the beach. This soft, effortless shirt has a slightly oversized fit for extra comfort.

Sizes: XXS–XXL | Materials: 100% cotton | Colors: 8

The Other Travel Clothes You’re Forgetting

Tops? Check. Flowy pants and skirts? Check. Dresses that you can wear out or treat as a cover-up? Practically the daily uniform. Still, there are a few other staples you’ll want to make sure you have on hand, too. It’s an oft-repeated cliché, but layering truly is key.

Levi’s Womens 501 Original Jean Shorts

These Levi’s shorts are currently 40 percent off at Amazon.

Jean shorts are essential for casual days strolling through a city or impromptu meetups with friends. Throw them on over a sleek swimsuit or break them out in transitional weather. And this isn’t the only Levi’s denim we’re fond of — two of its most popular jeans hold space in our team’s closets, too.

Sizes: 23–39 | Materials: Denim | Colors: 44

AE Long Weekend Crewneck Sweater

This American Eagle Crewneck Sweater is 60 percent off for a limited time.

A layerable neutral sweater is another travel must-have, especially in that frigid airplane air conditioning. Similarly, for those long stretches away from home, an oversized sweater can also be a cuddly comfort for when you’re missing your own bed.

Sizes: XXS–L | Materials: Cotton | Colors: 1

How to Pack the Best Travel Clothes

When building your travel wardrobe, you’ll want to consider factors like trip duration, climate, and more. Do you want year-round items or would you rather commit to rotating your staples seasonally? Will you have access to laundry? (If not, you’ll want to opt for fabrics that wick away odor and sweat so you can get multiple wears out of each item.) Are there sights or situations that have etiquette requirements and dress codes requiring a certain amount of coverage?

Some personal guidance as a travel expert: Many packing guides might swear by a neutral, minimalist capsule wardrobe for ultimate frequency of wear, but you shouldn’t be afraid to go maximalist either. If you pick comfortable, durable pieces, you’ll still get more use from those “singular” funky outfits than you expect — and your camera roll will thank you for choosing the pieces you actually love most. Similarly, accessories like bold jewelry or belts generally take up very little luggage real estate but go a long way in elevating any look. Might as well add some pizzazz to your Pisa pic, right?

And don’t forget the packing cubes and travel organizers to get the most space out of your carry-on suitcase , either.

Best Times To Visit Paris

The best time to visit Paris is from June to August and September to October. Both summer and fall have its ups and downs. From June to August the weather in Paris is just about  parfait (perfect). Average highs are in the high 70s and there are long days of sunshine. Unfortunately, summer is also the most crowded time – and the most expensive. For lower travel rates and significantly shorter lines at attractions , plan a visit in the fall. The seasonal foliage is known to stun, though the city's spring blooms are pretty famous too. If a travel deal is all that you're after, a visit during the winter will surely shave off travel expenses. Keep in mind though that Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, seeing upward of 30 million travelers yearly. So no matter what time you visit, there will always be tourists and some crowds.
