GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Best 5th Wheels – Luxury on the Road

The best 5th wheels.

For die-hard road trippers and long term campers, 5th wheels are one of the best RV choices out there. They're not only suitable for bigger families but also provide both luxury and comfort to larger groups. Since they offer a wide and spacious area, they also allow you to relax and plan longer trips anytime you want.

It's a common notion among non-road trippers that luxury has to be at home and life on the road lacks any leisurely extravagance. Nothing could be further from the truth, especially with fifth wheels.

In this article, we discuss everything you get in the best fifth wheels, from full RV camping experience to bunk beds , luxury kitchens , and even garage and workspace with Toy Haulers .

Getting a 5th wheel is a big investment, so we include all the necessary information you need in order to make sure you know what to look for. So, if you're looking forward to having a regular weekend of your dreams, or even thinking about getting one for  full-time living , we recommend you give this article a thorough read.

What is a 5th Wheel Best for?

There are a many reasons people buy this luxurious and often expensive RV. It's not only used to create amazing experiences and memories on the road, but it can also be used as a home or business too. Allow us to explain...

Use a 5th Wheel for Luxurious Travel

The best use of an RV is that it can accommodate a large group or family for a camping trip. They're not only very spacious but also come with relatively higher ceilings, and sometimes with one or more slide-outs.

As well as this, they boast large and attractive scenic windows that provide an excellent view of the outside. And best of all, there are many really attractive designs and upgrades available that allow you to customize your own 5th wheel.

The idea of living full-time in an RV, such as a fifth wheel, is gaining popularity. Many models offer high-end touches that allow you to make your 5th wheel camper as luxury as your home. Some models also offer space for additional cabinets and can easily house large electrical appliances, making them ideal to live inside full time.

Buying a fifth wheel takes a certain toll on your purse, and if you don't use it often you probably aren't getting value for money. If that's the case, you can always rent your 5th wheel camper out to people and earn a good amount of money through it.

What Should I Look For When Buying a 5th Wheel?

We have already established that a fifth wheel camper comes in handy for a few reasons. Now, it's to understand what you should look for when buying a 5th wheel. Always look at the principal features if you want to make the perfect investment. Here are some to look out for:

Before anything else, you need to focus on the purpose behind your purchase. If you're looking to take your RV for camping trips regularly and demand luxury, you should definitely consider a more spacious and luxurious model . Of course, this will add to the cost, but if you can afford it, all the mod cons will enhance every trip.

However, if you are looking to rent your RV or use it to transport goods, you don’t need to prioritize luxury over comfort, so don't go spending too much on life's little luxuries.

5th wheel being towed

Once you've decided on the purpose, it's easier to identify the right length of RV for your needs. When it's full of all your cabinets, additional storage space , and other luxuries, it can take up a lot of space, so make sure you go for a 5th wheel with enough length, so you're not too cramped in.

Always consider who will be going with you. Is it just you and your partner, or do you have a family? Will friends be going along with you regularly? Many things to consider before you know what length 5th wheel you would like.

Some RV parks , caravan parks and campgrounds also come with length restrictions, so you need to keep this in mind.

The longer the fifth wheel, usually means the heavier it will be. But you have to consider the weight of your fifth wheel camper for different reasons. When considering the weight, you have to take into account your truck and how much its towing capacity is.

You'll need to do some calculations to determine the fifth wheel size and weight your truck can safely tow. You may also need to consider the trailer’s cargo carrying capacity if you're thinking of transporting goods in your trailer.

Holding Tanks

Many people go camping for extended periods, and it can be a hassle if your fifth wheel camper only has a small holding tank . Many models only have tanks that hold water only for three to four days, so try get a 5th wheel that has a larger holding tank so you don't have to deal with it too often.

Review of the Best Fifth Wheels

It's very easy for people who are very enthusiastic about buying the best 5th wheel to be swayed by cheap marketing tactics. Many people end up choosing luxurious models that don’t actually provide that much comfort. This section will introduce excellent models that boast a plethora of amazing features without compromising on durability, safety, and comfort.

Best Overall 5th Wheel: Grand Design Solitude

Best Overall 5th Wheel: Grand Design Solitude

Not everyone wants to use large fifth wheels for camping only. Some people want to transport goods or even use them as temporary residential areas. For them, there are a plethora of options to choose from, and the floor plan options are endless.

Excellent Stability

One of the best things about fifth wheels is that they provide excellent stability when towing. They're not only smooth and easy to tow but you'll also experience relatively less sway. On top of that, the overall design makes the unit more aerodynamic, which further adds to its appeal.

Disadvantages

Of course, nothing is perfect.

For starters, relative to other trailer types, the fifth wheels are very expensive. The cost further increases if you buy more luxurious models, or you buy a trailer that is longer in length.

Maintenance Cost

The initial cost of buying a 5th wheel is high, but maintaining it isn't cheap either.

While large size is very much an advantage in most cases, the size of a large fifth wheel means you won't be able to enjoy the offroading and extremely remote areas you can with a truck bed tent , or even a small trailer .

Fifth Wheel Camper Comparison Overview

Gooseneck vs 5th wheel.

Both these types offer different but equally appealing features, and for this reason it's often hard to choose between them. For starters, a fifth wheel hitch is much better for recreational towing than a gooseneck hitch. The latter is preferred for commercial and farming towing.

Fifth wheel hitches not only provide better stability but also appear smoother in their function. Gooseneck hitches are recommended because they offer a very minimalistic and invasive design. This makes towing relatively easier and safer.

5th Wheel Camper vs Travel Trailer

Travel trailers, as a general principle, are often smaller in size to fifth wheels. Smaller units are obviously easier and safer to tow. However, if you compare two models of similar size, you'll realize that fifth wheels are not only safer to tow, but they're also much easier to maneuver. This is mainly because the hitch point is at a very suitable location.

Another reason why people prefer the fifth wheels is because they offer an abundance of space for relaxing during camping trips. On the other hand, travel trailers may seem a bit congested because they come with restricted space.

Motorhome vs 5th Wheel

Many people prefer fifth wheels because they offer more space for living and housing than motorhomes of a similar size. This is because the slides that exist in motorhomes tend to be shallow and decrease the overall space. The fifth wheel's actual square footage is relatively large, so it can house taller ceilings, and they also offer more diversity in their design and features.

However, many people are attracted to motorhomes because of their relative affordability when it. The costs required for their maintenance is also lower, and motorhomes tend to be easier to tow.

5th Wheel vs Bumper Pull

One of the most common types of hitch is the bumper pull. It's also known as a tagalong or a drag trailer and is quite popular among customers. However, many people find the name to be slightly misleading because the trailer doesn't have the capability to actually connect to the tow vehicle's bumper. What actually happens is that the tongue of the trailer fits over the ball hitch. It will also jut out from the frame of the vehicle in the direction of the rear end.

On the other hand, a fifth wheel is a very large trailer that will require a fifth wheel hitch to tow. Such units are also extremely heavy and require a very heavy and full-sized tow. Another important thing to note is that the coupling needs to be in the bed of the truck.

Fifth Wheel Towing Tips

There's no point in investing in a model if you're unable to tow it properly. Here is a perfect tip to help with that:

This is something anyone looking to drive an RV will need to know. You'll not only have to account for the weight of your RV, but you also need to add the weight of the vehicle used for towing. Together, these weights should never exceed the weight limit. In order to accurately weigh the vehicles, you can either use a CAT scale or a quarry scale.

Fifth Wheel Camping Tips

Camping is one of the top uses of the fifth wheels. Here are some tips that will definitely come in handy before you set off.

Weight Limit

This is critical to remember. Every model will come with a weight limit, and if you don’t want to end up in any accidents, it's recommended you don’t exceed it at any cost. Mostly, models offer a weight limit of 24,000 pounds or even more. This weight includes the weight of your trailer when you have everything in it.

Higher Altitudes

Like with any other vehicle, driving an RV at higher altitudes also requires special attention and focus. The higher the altitude gets, the more power will be needed by your truck's engine. For example, if you elevate a total of 1000 feet, your truck's engine will experience a three to four percent drop in power.

One of the best ways to avoid any serious drop is to decrease the load on the trailer. You should start by getting rid of any non-essential gear or water tanks.

People Also Ask - 5th Wheel Camper FAQs

Do 5th wheels hold their value.

If you sell your 5th wheel, the resale value isn't very high, and you'll especially face a sizeable drop in value after 5 years or so. The initial cost of the RV may be very high, but you can easily recover this cost if you account for your weekend trips and the money you would otherwise have to spend on accommodation and renting cars, so as long as you use your 5th wheel trailer, you should get value for for money.

How Long Will a Fifth Wheel Last?

Like any other vehicle, this also depends on how you treat your vehicle. Things like good and timely maintenance will definitely increase the longevity of the model. But, on average, a good-sized model will last around 10 to 15 years. The number of years increases when you buy higher-end models.

5th wheel toy hauler

Can You Live in a 5th Wheel on Your Property?

This depends on which state you are living in. Living in your RV on your own land is not illegal, but there are no absolute laws on how long you can live inside your RV. If you live in it permanently, you might be breaking the law in some states.

What Size Truck Do I Need to Pull a 5th Wheel?

The weight capacity and model will determine the truck you need to pull it. A half-ton truck like the Ram 1500, or the Ford F-150, or even the Chevy Silverado 1500, is going to be enough to pull any fifth wheel. However, fifth wheels that are slightly longer and wider may require a Ram 2500 or a Ford F-250.

Are 5th Wheels Easier to Tow?

This really depends on whether you are following some important tips and tricks required for easy maneuvering. A fifth wheel can be easy to maneuver and is considered very safe. This is because, compared to travel trailers, the hitch point is located at a suitable point. This makes the process of towing relatively easier for similar-sized models.

What is the Average Weight of a 5th Wheel?

The average weight of a common model will be around 12,700 pounds. This is the weight of an empty model that doesn't contain any additional gear or equipment. There are also some models that have an average weight of 24000 pounds when loaded. The largest wheel camper, however, weighs 16000 pounds when it's empty and unloaded.

Luxury 5th wheels often cost well over $100,000, allowing only those with substantial means to enjoy their next-level comfort, size, and features.

However, this didn’t sit well with Keystone.

So they set out to design and build a more affordable luxury 5th-wheel camper.

And the result was the Keystone Avalanche lineup, which offers more affordable pricing, 12 different floorplans, a wide variety of sleeping capacities, and premium features usually only found on higher-end luxury 5th wheels.

And thanks to its toy hauler design, the Voltage Triton 4271 truly has three clearly defined bedrooms.

Including the toy hauler space itself, as the garage is equipped with a lay-flat Happy-Jack power bunk with a sofa and tabletop that provides a completely closed-off bedroom from the rest of the trailer.

Which in fairness might be more accurately described as having three separate spaces for sleeping as opposed to three separate bedrooms.

As the only well-defined bedroom on the coach is the rear bedroom, which offers a king-size bed and its own full bath.

But I do think a few concessions have to be made when looking for three bedrooms in a space less than 40 feet long and only 8 feet 5 inches wide.

As the Challenger 37DS has two full bathrooms, an L-shaped kitchen with lots of counter space and a residential-style fridge, and plenty of space to spread out, thanks to three large slide-outs.

The Coachmen Sportscoach RD 402TS has a very similar layout compared to the Thor Challenger 37DS from above .

As they both offer a rear owner’s suite, mid bunk beds, and additional sleeping space in the main living area that can be used as a third bedroom .

One big difference you might have noticed though is that the Coachmen Sportscoach RD 402TS is priced at $275,000, while the Thor Challenger 37DS is priced at $170,000.

Making the Sportscoach RD 402TS, $105,000 more expensive compared to the Challenger  37DS.

Coachmen Sportscoach RD 402TS Floorplan

Coachmen Sportscoach RD 402TS Floorplan

However, there’s a good reason for this, because, despite their similar floorplans and sizes, these two motorhomes have several key differences.

And the two biggest differences are their engines as well as their chassis.

Because while the Thor Challenger has a 7.3L front gas engine and uses a Ford F-53 chassis, the Coachmen Sportscoach RD uses a far superior ISB Cummins rear diesel engine and a raised rail Freightliner chassis .

So while they ‘re both popular large Class A motorhomes offering lots of interior space and three separate sleeping areas, the Coachmen Sportcoash RD 402TS is a far more premium and luxury Class A motorhome, which is reflected in the price.

It’s worth noting though that despite the higher price of the Sportscoach RD 402TS over the Challenger 37DS, the Coachmen Sportscoach RD is still the cheapest diesel pusher you can buy.

10. K-Z Sportsmen 362BH

  • Average Cost :  $45,000
  • Length :  40 Feet 9 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  8,280 Pounds
  • Sleeping Capacity :  7

The K-Z Sportsmen 362BH is the first destination trailer on this list that offers 3 bedrooms.

But you might be wondering what a destination trailer is.

A destination trailer or park model RV is a trailer designed to be parked at a specific location for an extended period of time, instead of being used as a “travel” trailer, due to its larger size and configuration.

However, some RVs don’t fit perfectly into either the park model or the travel trailer category.

As they offer a blend of features from both RV classes, providing a hybrid between the two.

And a prime example of this hybrid is the K-Z Sportsmen 362BH.

K-Z Sportsmen 362BH Floorplan

K-Z Sportsmen 362BH Floorplan

As the Sportsmen 362BH’s larger size and sliding glass door could easily put it into the RV park model class, however, because the trailer also has onboard batteries and holding tanks, it’s also a completely self-contained trailer, allowing it to be classified as a travel trailer as well.

Regardless of whether you classify this K-Z RV as a park model or a travel trailer though, there is no argument that this is one extremely capable RV, allowing for either long-term camping or full-time living.

K-Z Sportsmen 362BH Interior

And to illustrate this point, you need only to look at its floorplan, which has been optimized for long-term camping and full-time living .

Thanks to its large open living room, rear owner’s suite, ample seating, and versatile front bunkhouse with a dinette booth, upper bunk, and bunk beds.

11. Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL

  • Average Cost :  $65,000
  • Length :  41 Feet 10 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  12,719 Pounds

The Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL is one of the most popular destination trailers today.

As the Salem Grand Villa 42DL was designed for long-term and full-time living, thanks to its colossal size, multiple deep slide-outs, 3 separate bedrooms, and double loft space.

Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL Floorplan

Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL Flooplan

But while the three bedrooms, double loft space, and numerous sleeping areas are great, the real show stopper on this RV is the jaw-dropping main living area.

As it offers super tall double-height ceilings, stacked and wrap-around windows, and top-of-the-line finishes.

For more info on the Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL and to experience a 3D walk-through, check out Forest River’s website by clicking here .

12. Keystone Retreat 39FLFT

  • Average Cost :  $66,500
  • Length :  40 Feet 11 Inches
  • Dry Weight :  12,907 Pounds

Similar in design and configuration to the above Forest River Salem Grand Villa 42DL, the Keystone Retreat 39FLFT is another great destination trailer, if you’re looking for one with 3 bedrooms .

As the Retreat 39FLFT floorplan has a large front bedroom with a king-sized bed and a huge loft space that runs the entire front half of the trailer, which is where the additional two bedrooms are .

Keystone Retreat 39FLFT Floorplan

Keystone Retreat 39FLFT Floorplan

In addition, this large park model from Keystone also features countless luxury features.

Including multiple ceiling fans, residential stainless steel appliances, solid surface countertops, a large sliding glass door, a central vac system, and a free-standing table with four chairs.

For more information on the Keystone Retreat 39FLFT, check out Keystone’s website by clicking here .

The number of bedrooms in an RV can range from zero to three, based on its size and configuration. However, most RVs typically have either one bedroom or none.

While many RVs have a single bedroom or none at all, there are larger and more luxurious models that offer multiple bedrooms to accommodate larger families or groups.

All camper types offer larger models and trim levels, however, the four largest that offer the most room, include the Class A motorhome, the 5th wheel, the travel trailer, and the destination trailer.

While some of the largest RV models, especially large bunkhouse models can sleep ten people, it’s rare, as most travel trailers and motorhomes will usually sleep between two and six people.

If you’re in the market for a spacious and comfortable home-on-wheels that offers lots of bedrooms and sleeping capacity, every three-bedroom RV on this list makes a great option.

Thanks to their innovative designs, modern amenities, and flexible floor plans, which offer not only lots of sleeping capacity but also separate sleeping spaces.

So, whether you’re planning a short getaway or embarking on an extended cross-country journey, these 3-bedroom RVs make the ultimate travel companion for those looking for lots of comfort and space while traveling.

Regardless of whether you choose a large 3-bedroom RV like the ones on this list, or a smaller 1 or 2-bedroom option though, we hope you find the perfect RV for you and your family and wish you many years of happy camping!

Jason is an avid lover of RVs and the RV lifestyle. He is both a writer and editor for RV Owner HQ and has been RVing and camping for over 20 years.

Some fifth wheel trailers are really just too large and hard to travel with.

Save on your expenses too, as we are here to share with you our 11 FAVORITE SMALL FIFTH WHEELS!

Our Top 11 Small Fifth Wheel Trailer Recommendations… Take Your Pick!

Winnebago minnie plus 29rbh: best overall.

Key Measurements

  • Exterior Length: 33’9″
  • Exterior Width : 8′
  • Exterior Height : 11’11”
  • Interior Height : 7’9″
  • Dry Weight : 6,280 lbs
  • Hitch Weight: 740 lbs

The Winnebago small 5th wheel offers an IMPRESSIVE classic camping feel, making it our BEST OVERALL PICK.

First, it is decently sized with a gross vehicle weight of 9,995 lbs . These measurements are in proportion with the perfectly prescribed tow vehicle for most trailers!

To maximize space, it also has TWO SLIDEOUTS that extend the living space of the fifth wheel for a MASTER SUITE and ENTERTAINMENT CENTER… and yes, it has a queen-size bed AND seat recliners.

Add to these features are the U-shaped kitchen with the following apparatus:

  • Double-door refrigerator
  • Three-burner oven
  • Stainless steel sink

That’s quite a LOT of features supported by its LARGE holding tank capacities as well:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 50 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 41 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 82 gallons

Another feature to LOVE is the overall sleek design of the Minnie Plus small 5th wheel. Its exterior is coated with an LED-lit glass cover that makes the design WORK for its FUNCTION and AESTHETIC.

You also get a choice of over HALF A DOZEN COLOR CHOICES! Feel free to either camouflage your fifth wheel trailer in the forest OR have it stand out.

The only tradeoff, though? The additional storage comes in the form of CARPETED STORAGE under each dinette bench. This is highly inaccessible and inconvenient for some campers.

However, despite preferring drawers… one can’t deny just HOW MUCH space these carpeted ones add to the fifth wheel camper.

  • Classic and spacious design
  • Sufficient storage and carrying capacity
  • High customizability
  • Decently sized and sufficient holding tank capacities
  • Location of additional storage

Grand Design Reflection 150 260RD: Best Value

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Granddesignrv.com

  • Exterior Length: 29’9″
  • Exterior Width : 7’4″
  • Exterior Height : 12′
  • Total Floorplans: 5

The Reflection 150 260RD is a small 5th wheel trailer from the reputable Grand Design team. It’s our BEST VALUE PICK.

THE 260RD is a mid-range travel trailer you should get if you’re looking for camping over a LONG period of time.

Firstly feel comfortable with a MASTER SUITE that features a queen bed , oversized underbed storage , and a king-size wardrobe. This master bedroom is also easily connected to an enclosed bathroom.

Enjoy all of these with LARGE TANK CAPACITIES:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 62 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 39 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 71 gallons

The small 5th wheel trailer is also EASILY TOWABLE with a hitch weight of just around 1,325 lbs. Route planning is virtually seen to NOT be a problem at all .

The gross weight of 9,9995 lbs justifies this all the more to its market of long-term camping . Some even make a HOME out of this travel trailer, which is a testament to its provided amenities and comfort.

Other features of the 260RD 5th wheel include:

  • Heated wall hugger theater seating with LED lights & massage
  • “One-Touch” electric LED awning
  • Outdoor speakers
  • Outside showers
  • Motion sensor pass through and entry lighting

You generally wouldn’t encounter any problems with this fifth wheel… you can EASILY expect the basic features out of a camper as well.

Just maybe anticipate its high price offering at $57,000.

  • Assured basic features
  • Quality and luxurious features
  • Designed for travels of longer periods of time or home building

Scamp 19-Foot Deluxe Small Fifth Wheel Camper: Best Budget Pick

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Scamptrailers.com

  • Exterior Length: 19′
  • Exterior Width : 6’8″
  • Exterior Height : 8’10”
  • Interior Height: 6’3″
  • Total Floorplans : 2

Priced at just below $20,000, the Scamo 19-Foot Delux small fifth wheel trailer is NOT ONLY our Best Budget Pick … it’s also the SMALLEST fifth wheel camper on our list!

Size is an important factor, especially for already SMALL fifth wheel campers. This is why small fifth wheels make up for it in HEIGHT… and the Scamp 5th wheel does NOT disappoint.

But don’t worry! The fifth wheel trailer will STILL be cleared from ALL BRIDGES AND OVERHANGS.

Rather than being extremely tall, the Scamp 5th wheel features everything PROPORTIONAL to its size:

  • Cargo capacity of 1000 lbs (which is actually HUGE for this size)
  • Small holding tasks: 12 gallons for freshwater, 9.5 gallons for blackwater, and 21 gallons for gray water
  • Miniature interior with a queen-size loft bed
  • Two-burner stove

These features make the Scamp 5th wheel perfect for an AUTHENTIC CAMPING EXPERIENCE. The manufacturers even highly encourage using other public facilities for utilities, such as a full wet bath.

This 5th wheel may have almost every feature limited in size relative to others, but it does a GREAT job serving its purpose.

  • Small and lightweight for ease of towing
  • Features that are proportional to the size
  • Limited features and floorplans
  • Relatively tight spaces and sleeping space

KZ Sportsmen 231RK

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Kz-rv.com

  • Exterior Length: 24’5″

The 231RK may be categorized along with small fifth wheel campers, but DO NOT BE FOOLED. It’s REALLY LONG for its size at almost 25 feet!

What’s even greater about the 231RK is that it has storage tanks designed for a BOONDOCKING RV LIFESTYLE:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 45 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 53 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 85 gallons

These numbers are HUGE for their size.

The KZ Sportsmen 5th wheel’s length also allows for slideout features . This means MORE SPACE in the form of expendable rooms. The 5th wheel also utilizes this by having:

  • A kitchen with a three-burner range, microwave, and a compact refrigerator
  • A master suite with a queen-size bed
  • A full bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower
  • A retractable awning

In terms of size, it also has a dry weight of around 6,150 lbs and a payload capacity of up to 1,350 lbs. The 231RK 5th wheel definitely packs more than it shows.

The only downside is that you may have a hard time lugging the 5th wheel around… yes, despite it being built for boondocking.

  • More spacious than other small 5th wheel trailers
  • Complete features and luxurious amenities
  • Large tank capacities
  • May be hard to tow vehicle around

Palomino Puma 253FBS

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Palominorv.com

  • Exterior Length: 28′
  • Exterior Height : 12’2″
  • Awning Size: 17′
  • Hitch Weight: 1,128 lbs

The Puma 253FBS is a decent-sized and spaciously designed camper. Moreover, it’s an affordable small 5th wheel trailer with a LOT of luxurious features:

  • Solar panels
  • Pass-through storage
  • Back-up camera
  • Exterior speakers
  • Outside shower

But what’s TRULY great about the Puma 5th wheel is its wide electric awning with LED LIGHTS. You can definitely have a great time both inside AND outside of your RV!

This awning feature goes hand in hand with the HIGH CUSTOMIZABILITY of the 5th wheel.

The Puma 253FBS is also considered to be SPACIOUS most especially because of the U-shaped dining area design . This makes everything easily accessible: the kitchen, the entertainment section, AND the master suite.

The interior is already well-decorated for a modern finish and even more so designed with ADDITIONAL storage ! Don’t be surprised at all to see racks and more cabinets over your high-density foam mattress.

Holding tanks are also capable of storing A LOT… well enough for a boondocking RV travel destination.

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 43 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 35 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 69 gallons

Of course, there is a downside to this small 5th wheel: it’s not as high quality as other campers you’ll find in the market… but it does make up for it with the number of features you’re getting.

  • Lots of features
  • Spacious and well-crafted design
  • Finish is not as high quality as others

Chaparral Lite 25MKS

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Coachmenrv.com

  • Exterior Length: 29’3″
  • Exterior Height : 11’10”
  • Hitch Weight: 1,307 lbs

The Chaparral Lite small 5th wheel is another affordable camper on this list! At over 29 feet, this is already considered to be on the larger side of SMALL 5th wheels travel trailers.

It’s spacious enough with TWO SLIDEOUTS that feature its kitchen pantry and extra storage .

You can also perfectly fit a queen-size bed, a tri-fold sofa, and various kitchen appliances around the trailer.

The entertainment section is also decked with theater seating AND a high-quality TV if that’s more of your entertainment type! There is also a fireplace perfect for a cold stay-in.

However, there IS a trade-off: the relatively smaller capacity for its holding tanks:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 40 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 33 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 33 gallons

Regardless, feel free to also relax under an awning decorated with an LED light strip. Just remember to TURN THIS OFF before… some complain that it’s too bright for a camping trip.

  • Spacious camper
  • Weather adaptability
  • Smaller holding tank capacity

Northwood Fox Mountain 235RL

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Northwoodmfg.com

  • Exterior Length: 27’10”
  • Exterior Height : 12’9″
  • Cargo Capacity : 3239 lbs
  • Total Floorplans: 2

The 235RL 5th wheel has an average length for a small camper, albeit on the taller side at almost 13 feet.

The trailer MAXIMIZES this space by loading in an L-shaped design kitchen.

This is glammed up with LOTS of counter space, a refrigerator, and a dinette and pantry that extends into its SINGLE SLIDEOUT FEATURE.

This space is also home to a sofa bed upgradeable to twin recliners and a master suite with a private toilet and bath.

You’ll also find it convenient as the suite’s queen bed has charging stations on both its side for 12-volt DC and USB ports .

The Northwood Fox Mountain 235RL also has decently sized tanks. More notable would be its value for its freshwater capacity:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 59 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 36 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 42 gallons

Perhaps its downside is its high gross vehicle weight of 11,500 lbs . This is heavier than most trailers on our list, so you may find it a little hard to drive around.

However, the 5th wheel does come with a 4,205-pound cargo capacity . This, along with its outdoor features, could be useful for longer AND camp-heavy trips!

  • Spacious design
  • Outdoor space features
  • Decently sized tanks
  • Heavy gross vehicle weight

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Escapetrailer.com

  • Exterior Length: 21’2″
  • Exterior Height : 10′
  • Hitch Weight: 646 lbs
  • Dry Weight: 3,910 lbs

The Escape 5.0 5th wheel is another COMPACT and LIGHTWEIGHT camper that can be easily towed by a half-ton truck.

It’s HIGHLY maneuverable with a LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY and DECREASED WIND RESISTANCE. It’s strong and durable, too.

More on its compact size, the Escape 5.0 is still able to have features you might only expect from regular sized campers:

  • A queen bed
  • A 6.7 cubic feet refrigerator
  • A full wet bath with a glass shower enclosure
  • A kitchen with a two-burner mount and stainless steel finish
  • Extra storage for microwave space

Its tank capacities are also just perfect for short weekend travels … they’re not too heavy to contribute much to your gross vehicle weight capacity of 5,500 lbs:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 28 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 30 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 28 gallons

However, this gross weight might be limiting for some campers who are after a comfortable trip.

  • Decently sized tanks for a short weekend trip
  • Limited cargo weight

Forest River Rockwood Ultra Lite 2442BS

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Forestriverinc.com

  • Exterior Length: 28’11”
  • Exterior Height : 13’1″
  • Hitch Dry Weight: 1,252 lbs
  • Total Floorplans: 15

The Rockwood Ultra Lite 2442BS 5th wheel is another camper you should consider.

Forest River is one of the most reliable RV manufacturers in the RV industry. This is apparent in the QUALITY BUILD of the travel trailer.

It has laminated fiberglass sidewalls and a fully coated aluminum frame. This is perfect for its extended space, thanks to its TWO SLIDEOUTS.

The U-shaped dinette also leads to the master suite with a private entrance to a dual-entry bathroom .

What’s even more reassuring is that you may even go and try for a little boondocking, especially with these holding tank capacities:

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 54 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 40 gallons
  • Graywater tank capacity : 80 gallons

Moreover, feel free to spend your time both INSIDE AND OUTSIDE of your small fifth wheel camper with outdoor features like

  • Outdoor surround sound speakers
  • Outdoor grill

This Forest River 5th wheel trailer may just become a bit too heavy depending on the additional RV gear.

  • Luxurious outdoor features
  • Decently sized tanks good for boondocking
  • Lots of possible floorplans
  • May become too heavy

Jayco Eagle HT 25.5REOK

travel villa 5th wheel camper

Source: Jayco.com

  • Exterior Length: 28’8″
  • Exterior Height : 12’11”
  • Interior Height: 7’10”
  • Awning: 20′
  • Total Floorplans: 8

The Eagle HT 25.5REOK 5th wheel is PERFECT for a trip across the Midwest!

Aesthetically, this trailer does not offer that much for its customization. This makes it EASY for Eagle HT to market itself towards a community that plans to blend in with the other RVs of the Midwest.

Its main features include WIDE TANK CAPACITIES. Most notable should also be its TWO GRAYWATER TANKS that separate bathroom use from kitchen use.

  • Freshwater tank capacity : 42 gallons
  • Blackwater tank capacity : 32.5 gallons
  • Graywater tanks (2) capacity : 65 gallons

This might be a problem if you are NOT stopping at multiple destinations. Make sure to dump and refill your tanks every now and then.

Other than this, the Eagle HT 25.5 REOK 5th wheel is a decently sized trailer with most of the basic features you would expect it to have. It is also quite SPACIOUS with a lot more legroom than most on this list.

Lastly, this Jayco camper is easily towable with a hitch dry weight of 1,405 lbs and a cargo capacity of 2,440 lbs.

  • Efficient dumping system because of its tanks
  • Decent features for a trip around the Midwest
  • Need for multiple tank dumping and refilling
  • Low customizability

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a small 5th wheel trailer.

It’s quite simple: they are your typical fifth wheel trailer BUT SMALLER .

Smaller in this sense could either refer to length OR overall surface area . Of course, compared to a regular fifth wheel trailer.

This also directly addresses the loss of storage space due to a regular fifth wheel truck bed.

What Makes Small 5th Wheel Trailers Small?

As we’ve mentioned, smaller usually translates to a decrease in LENGTH or OVERALL SURFACE AREA.

For small fifth wheel trailers , this would mean an offset in HEIGHT… SMALL campers are usually TALLER than regular campers.

For a new camper, you might want to consider these rules of thumb:

  • Expect an additional 2 feet in overall height
  • Allot more time and attention for route planning
  • Plot routes with high clearances

We’ve noticed that the HEIGHT of your 5th wheel may become a huge problem only in SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE US: the western region, to be exact.

Most clearance issues were experienced farther into the northeast area of RV travel destinations.

Are Small 5th Wheel Trailers Towable Behind a Truck?

Quick answer: YES.

To know if your tow vehicle can successfully accommodate a small fifth wheel trailer, you would want to satisfy TWO THINGS:

  • Truck Towing Capacity > Trailer Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
  • Truck Payload Capacity > Trailer Hitch Weight

Small trailers CAN be towed even by a mid-size truck. This is in STARK COMPARISON with regular 5th wheels as you might need tow vehicles that are one-ton trucks.

Are Small Fifth Wheel Trailers Easier to Tow Than Travel Trailers?

This depends on your DRIVING SKILL as an operator… it will also help if you have a companion to help you navigate and guide you through parking.

However, campers DO report that it is a little bit harder to tow smaller trailers .

  • Mounting is less secure
  • Pivot point is farther from the rear tires
  • More likely to be affected by wind resistance

This can ALL be traced back to how smaller campers are taller . This means that if they’re NOT hinged and secured properly, their balance may be off.

Why Buy a Small Fifth Wheel Camper?

A small 5th wheel trailer is EASIER TO MANEUVER.

A regular fifth wheel travel trailer may seem like the MOST IDEAL RVs out there, but they DO come with some drawbacks:

  • You would need LARGE TRUCKS for towing, and
  • You might lose storage space in the truck bed

The maneuverability guaranteed by a small travel trailer makes it EASIER TO TOW even by a common half-ton truck. You may also get to save on fuel and end up with SPACIOUS FLOORPLANS.

Despite being small , a 5th wheel trailer may generally save on space and have you opt to maximize the features provided by OUTSIDE FACILITIES.

A Recap of the Top Fifth Wheels

As our budget pick , you will NOT get anything less from the Scamp 19-Foot Deluxe Camper! Yes, it does come at a lower price point, but it achieves this by offering its features PROPORTIONAL to its size.

The smaller legroom and sleeping space are all justified for COMFORT and ease of travel.

You should definitely choose this if you’re tight on a budget but would still want to travel RV-style!

The Geo-Pro G20BH (a new floorplan in 2025) caught my eye with its compact yet inviting bunkspace. For a camper of this size, bunks shouldn’t look this cozy and inviting. But if I’m in the market for a lightweight, compact towable, the G20BH will be high on my list. Plus, the bunks are made more functional with an exterior cargo door, doing a lot of work with a little.

With the expansion of their Transcend line earlier this summer, we wanted to see the new Grand Design travel trailer models at the Hershey show, and the 265BHT ’s unique approach to bunks was a standout feature. If you have young kids, this is one to keep in mind. Our family would love the stair bunk access and the open-concept floor plan that gives us just enough privacy.

Campsite Ultra 26TH Floor Plan

The rear kitchen offers plenty of countertop space, surprisingly well-placed hanging hooks, abundant natural light from the large windows, a bar shelf, and the fridge on the catty corner, all making the kitchen feel secluded and uncramped. The rest of the camper feels spacious and open while still giving the primary bedroom enough privacy. There is a lot to like about Campsite Ultra in general, but the 26TH was one of the few floor plans that really stood out this year.

The Salem/Wildwood innovations this year were smart and vast, and perhaps toward the top of their accomplishments is the introduction of the VERANDA travel trailers. This particular 37-foot edition, the 32VERANDA , features the iconic extending patio deck, a modernized and redesigned interior, and a spacious open layout that just as easily hosts family dinners as the perfect couple’s adventures.

Our introduction mentioned the many clever storage designs in this year’s batch of new RV models. The Cougar Half-Ton 25FKD front kitchen design includes a hidden walk-in pantry that puts this in the running for ‘Best in Show’. There is also tons of well-lit shelved storage behind the TV. Beyond that, we loved the front kitchen floor plan with a sink on the bar and windows above.

With the introduction of three brand new Keystone Coleman travel trailer lines (and a destination trailer line), we now have a whole new selection of elevated, tow-friendly travel trailers at affordable prices. I think everyone should be looking at the 25REX among those RVs as the ideal couple’s travel trailer, especially for those who like to have entertainment at the campsite. It’s the elephant in the room—the 65-inch flatscreen television—that folks are talking about. A dream for cinephiles.

If you can, please check out the unique Murphy bed design on the Grand Design Momentum 24MAV . With a few small adjustments, you go from a compact camper with a massive garage to a compact camper with a comfortable bedroom. This model is new in 2025 and could be a precursor to more of these versatile toy haulers that can store ample gear but don’t take up a ton of real estate.

Start with the main attraction of this unique travel trailer toy hauler: the front bedroom. Yes, we’re talking about the ceiling-mounted projector and drop-down projector screen that faces the bed. Yes, we’re talking about the massive front cap window. We’re also talking about the modular cabinet and drawer storage design at the front cap—a super cool design you should see for yourself. But don’t miss the patio, the stowaway kitchen island on wheels, and the versatile garage space with a drop-down bunk.

Without the proper eye or introduction, you might miss the star of this show. The Keystone Raptor 352’s eye-catching kitchen island offers a front, wicker-like design that, on its own, is aesthetically pleasing. But open the side cupboard and remove the wooden decorative pieces, and you’ll find that these turn into sturdy foldable bar stools. This is a cool feature worth seeing for yourself, not to mention all the space, storage, and hang-out areas the Raptor 352 offers.

travel villa 5th wheel camper

We kick off our fifth wheel list with a luxury fifth wheel with a niche audience: full-timing families. While this RV will appeal to far more RVers than just the full-time family, the High Country 397FB ’s best features are for the family with kids, featuring a front bunkhouse with a unique desk twist that’s great for roadschooling or remote work once you kick the kids outside for the day. We also love the large five-person seating in the living area and a large fold-up solid surface table top that’s perfect for family meals. Other qualities? The dual vanity bedroom in the back.

Let us also add the fact that Montana fifth wheels has partnered with LA-Z-Boy recliners to include these ultra-comfortable seats standard on all fifth wheels with theater seating. We were excited to scope out the Impression 360MYR fifth wheel based on the floor plan image alone. And it did not disappoint. The rear kitchen and dining area are hard to explain without seeing in person. Not only does that central table tie the space together—centralizing this as a hangout, food prep, and dining space—but then simply opening the entertainment center reveals an almost incomparable amount of hidden shelved storage. This is a super cool design worth seeing in person.

Let it be known that the tobacco vanilla candle in the neighboring Wildcat 402BEDS was the best RV scent of choice for the entire 2024 show. But the Wildcat 35FUN won our favorite fifth wheel floor plan. The key highlights include a second entry at the spacious rear bathroom—giving the primary bedroom independent access—and the unique front bunk room, which offers desk space and a perfect children’s lair.

An all-around great fifth wheel for families, this is a welcomed new floor plan for 2025 from Jayco.

The extra-large Campsite Reserve 39JD destination trailer offers a fresh approach to this RV category with a window-forward design, spacious living area, and a single long loft sleeping area with a primary bedroom below. This is a bit of a change-up from many of the dual loft designs we’ve seen recently, but one that works in the favor of the 39JD; the rear glass door and windows offer excellent views and abundant natural light.

We also saw cool storage innovations in the 39JD, with drawers built into the steps, a huge shelved pantry area behind the entertainment center, and some really handy cabinets on the very far side of the loft, great for keeping that area organized with kids.

While I had reservations about the faux-wood paneling design of the albeit captivating exterior of the Cedar Creek Cottage 41FWC , there’s just no arguing with its modern, clean, and functional interior layout and design once inside. Spiral staircases in other destination trailers present a bit of a shin gauntlet, whereas I was happy with the even-keeled approach to the rear loft in this destination trailer-style fifth wheel. I also loved the pull-out pantry cupboards. No qualms here with the 41FWC.

New fifth wheel destination trailers like the ROOST43 offer a unique solution to the typical problem many RVers face when towing traditional destination trailers. With towing made easier, the ROOST43 leans into the extra space now possible, and this design is great for families or those who want to travel with guests. Sleeping capacity is a big win on this camper, and the living spaces accommodate the extra visitors. You’ll want to see this one in person when you have a chance.

In my mind, a risk of the destination trailer category is to fall back on the classic loft design and not explore everything else tall ceilings and expanded square footage can offer. CrossRoads Hampton 395BAM made our list for doing the opposite. For example, check out its appallingly large, cycloptic front bay window that, when positioned correctly, is sure to provide some incredible views. This unique take on the destination trailer is for the couples out there who want a big camper with enough space for things like a full washer and dryer area.

Here’s a brand new addition to the Eddie Bauer motorized segment. This 20EB is a two-person Class B built on the Ram ProMaster with a modular rear that offers lots of versatile space. The clean simplicity of the Coachmen Freelander 26MBF appeals to those who want a simple Class C that offers plenty of daytime hangout spots but quickly transitions to a bedroom—which is the whole point of a Murphy bed design. For starters, the rear slide-out in the Euro 25EU allows for a king-sized bed in this 28-foot Class A. Secondly, we liked the family style living area featuring two buckle-ready seats for travel. For those looking for a little less in a Class A motorhome, this small option should make your list to explore.
