GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

As the only well-defined bedroom on the coach is the rear bedroom, which offers a king-size bed and its own full bath.

But I do think a few concessions have to be made when looking for three bedrooms in a space less than 40 feet long and only 8 feet 5 inches wide.

With that being said though, if you’re looking for a motorhome with three separate sleeping spaces, the Thor Challenger 37DS has you covered.

As this Class A RV features mid-double bunk beds with sliding pocket doors for privacy, as well as three extra sleeping spaces in the main living area that could double as a third bedroom.

Including a convertible dream dinette booth, a 68-inch wide jack knife sofa, and a drop-down bunk over the cab.

It’s not just the large sleeping capacity that makes the Challenger 37DS so great though, as this coach also offers plenty of space as well as amenities to comfortably accommodate large families and groups as well.

As the Challenger 37DS has two full bathrooms, an L-shaped kitchen with lots of counter space and a residential-style fridge, and plenty of space to spread out, thanks to three large slide-outs.

And the two biggest differences are their engines as well as their chassis.

Because while the Thor Challenger has a 7.3L front gas engine and uses a Ford F-53 chassis, the Coachmen Sportscoach RD uses a far superior ISB Cummins rear diesel engine and a raised rail Freightliner chassis .  

So while they ‘re both popular large Class A motorhomes offering lots of interior space and three separate sleeping areas, the Coachmen Sportcoash RD 402TS is a far more premium and luxury Class A motorhome, which is reflected in the price.

It’s worth noting though that despite the higher price of the Sportscoach RD 402TS over the Challenger 37DS, the Coachmen Sportscoach RD is still the cheapest diesel pusher you can buy.

This also directly addresses the loss of storage space due to a regular fifth wheel truck bed.

What Makes Small 5th Wheel Trailers Small?

As we’ve mentioned, smaller usually translates to a decrease in LENGTH or OVERALL SURFACE AREA.

For small fifth wheel trailers , this would mean an offset in HEIGHT… SMALL campers are usually TALLER than regular campers.

For a new camper, you might want to consider these rules of thumb:

• Expect an additional 2 feet in overall height
• Allot more time and attention for route planning
• Plot routes with high clearances

We’ve noticed that the HEIGHT of your 5th wheel may become a huge problem only in SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE US: the western region, to be exact.

Most clearance issues were experienced farther into the northeast area of RV travel destinations.

Are Small 5th Wheel Trailers Towable Behind a Truck?

Quick answer: YES.

To know if your tow vehicle can successfully accommodate a small fifth wheel trailer, you would want to satisfy TWO THINGS:

• Truck Towing Capacity > Trailer Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)
• Truck Payload Capacity > Trailer Hitch Weight

Small trailers CAN be towed even by a mid-size truck. This is in STARK COMPARISON with regular 5th wheels as you might need tow vehicles that are one-ton trucks.

Are Small Fifth Wheel Trailers Easier to Tow Than Travel Trailers?

This depends on your DRIVING SKILL as an operator… it will also help if you have a companion to help you navigate and guide you through parking.

However, campers DO report that it is a little bit harder to tow smaller trailers .

• Mounting is less secure
• Pivot point is farther from the rear tires
• More likely to be affected by wind resistance

This can ALL be traced back to how smaller campers are taller . This means that if they’re NOT hinged and secured properly, their balance may be off.

Why Buy a Small Fifth Wheel Camper?

A small 5th wheel trailer is EASIER TO MANEUVER.

A regular fifth wheel travel trailer may seem like the MOST IDEAL RVs out there, but they DO come with some drawbacks:

• You would need LARGE TRUCKS for towing, and
• You might lose storage space in the truck bed

The maneuverability guaranteed by a small travel trailer makes it EASIER TO TOW even by a common half-ton truck. You may also get to save on fuel and end up with SPACIOUS FLOORPLANS.

Despite being small , a 5th wheel trailer may generally save on space and have you opt to maximize the features provided by OUTSIDE FACILITIES.

Top 2025 RVs from America’s Largest RV Show

The Geo-Pro G20BH (a new floorplan in 2025) caught my eye with its compact yet inviting bunkspace. For a camper of this size, bunks shouldn’t look this cozy and inviting. But if I’m in the market for a lightweight, compact towable, the G20BH will be high on my list. Plus, the bunks are made more functional with an exterior cargo door, doing a lot of work with a little.

Campsite Ultra 19KB

We were impressed with the Campsite Ultra 19KB , a compact couple’s travel trailer with a smartly placed kitchen and sink, spacious rear bathroom, and uniquely placed cabinets in the slide-out where windows might normally go. With the expansion of their Transcend line earlier this summer, we wanted to see the new Grand Design travel trailer models at the Hershey show, and the 265BHT ’s unique approach to bunks was a standout feature. There is a lot to like about Campsite Ultra in general, but the 26TH was one of the few floor plans that really stood out this year.

Our introduction mentioned the many clever storage designs in this year’s batch of new RV models. Beyond that, we loved the front kitchen floor plan with a sink on the bar and windows above.

We kick off our fifth wheel list with a luxury fifth wheel with a niche audience: full-timing families. While this RV will appeal to far more RVers than just the full-time family, the High Country 397FB ’s best features are for the family with kids, featuring a front bunkhouse with a unique desk twist that’s great for roadschooling or remote work once you kick the kids outside for the day. We also love the large five-person seating in the living area and a large fold-up solid surface table top that’s perfect for family meals. Other qualities? The dual vanity bedroom in the back.

We were excited to scope out the Impression 360MYR fifth wheel based on the floor plan image alone. And it did not disappoint. The rear kitchen and dining area are hard to explain without seeing in person. Not only does that central table tie the space together—centralizing this as a hangout, food prep, and dining space—but then simply opening the entertainment center reveals an almost incomparable amount of hidden shelved storage. This is a super cool design worth seeing in person.

Let it be known that the tobacco vanilla candle in the neighboring Wildcat 402BEDS was the best RV scent of choice for the entire 2024 show. But the Wildcat 35FUN won our favorite fifth wheel floor plan. The key highlights include a second entry at the spacious rear bathroom—giving the primary bedroom independent access—and the unique front bunk room, which offers desk space and a perfect children’s lair.

Jayco Eagle HT 31QCD

The large U-shaped dinette is a great introduction to the open and spacious Jayco Eagle HT 31QCD . This camper is built for a big group, and we were taken by the unique, spacious rear bunk room, the open-concept kitchen and living area, the outdoor kitchen, and the privacy of the primary bedroom. An all-around great fifth wheel for families, this is a welcomed new floor plan for 2025 from Jayco.

Campsite reserve 39jd.

The extra-large Campsite Reserve 39JD destination trailer offers a fresh approach to this RV category with a window-forward design, spacious living area, and a single long loft sleeping area with a primary bedroom below. This is a bit of a change-up from many of the dual loft designs we’ve seen recently, but one that works in the favor of the 39JD; the rear glass door and windows offer excellent views and abundant natural light. 

We also saw cool storage innovations in the 39JD, with drawers built into the steps, a huge shelved pantry area behind the entertainment center, and some really handy cabinets on the very far side of the loft, great for keeping that area organized with kids.

Cedar Creek Cottage 41FWC

• Length: 42’6”

While I had reservations about the faux-wood paneling design of the albeit captivating exterior of the Cedar Creek Cottage 41FWC , there’s just no arguing with its modern, clean, and functional interior layout and design once inside. Spiral staircases in other destination trailers present a bit of a shin gauntlet, whereas I was happy with the even-keeled approach to the rear loft in this destination trailer-style fifth wheel. I also loved the pull-out pantry cupboards. No qualms here with the 41FWC.

New fifth wheel destination trailers like the ROOST43 offer a unique solution to the typical problem many RVers face when towing traditional destination trailers. With towing made easier, the ROOST43 leans into the extra space now possible, and this design is great for families or those who want to travel with guests. Sleeping capacity is a big win on this camper, and the living spaces accommodate the extra visitors. You’ll want to see this one in person when you have a chance.

CrossRoads Hampton 395BAM

In my mind, a risk of the destination trailer category is to fall back on the classic loft design and not explore everything else tall ceilings and expanded square footage can offer. CrossRoads Hampton 395BAM made our list for doing the opposite. For example, check out its appallingly large, cycloptic front bay window that, when positioned correctly, is sure to provide some incredible views. This unique take on the destination trailer is for the couples out there who want a big camper with enough space for things like a full washer and dryer area.

Thor Eddie Bauer 20EB

Here’s a brand new addition to the Eddie Bauer motorized segment. This 20EB is a two-person Class B built on the Ram ProMaster with a modular rear that offers lots of versatile space. We liked the flip-up table accessible from the exterior which only adds to the open feel of this camper van. Another cool feature? Check out the spacious rear shower which is a significant upgrade to most washrooms you get from the Class B segment.

Airstream Interstate 19X LE Outland Edition

If you want exclusivity, check out Airstream’s Interstate 19X LE Outland Edition , with only 30 in production. See one of these in person, and there’s much to consider: color, speakers, obstructions? But the unique mounted and motorized Dometic cooler caught our eye and won us over. With customizable underbelly lighting and a premium audio system, this Airstream appears to be part nightclub and part outdoor escape. But do check out the three position platform bed if you get the opportunity.

In our introduction, I mentioned the prevalence of exterior cargo doors on many of our favorite RV designs. The Thor Eddie Bauer 26EB is no exception. A solid Class C option for families on its own, the rear cargo door of the 26EB makes life on the road trip a bit more convenient and potentially more interesting at the campsite, especially for the kids coming in and out.

Coachmen Freelander 26MBF

The clean simplicity of the Coachmen Freelander 26MBF appeals to those who want a simple Class C that offers plenty of daytime hangout spots but quickly transitions to a bedroom—which is the whole point of a Murphy bed design. I’m an especially big fan of that u-shaped dinette with an elevated footrest around the table that promises many a card-game night. With an impressive outdoor kitchen to boot? Fun times are ahead in the Freelander 26MBF.

The versatile closeted bunk space on the Georgetown 5 Series 36F5 suits more than kids—this is a coach that you’d have no trouble bringing along a couple of friends. This is an elegant Class A that blends fashion and function. The dark wood finish on the coach we toured was especially luxurious without overwhelming.

Coachmen Euro 25EU

We wrap up our list with a compact, unconventional Class A that turned many heads with its unique exterior and followed through with a surprisingly elegant, comfortable interior. For starters, the rear slide-out in the Euro 25EU allows for a king-sized bed in this 28-foot Class A. Secondly, we liked the family style living area featuring two buckle-ready seats for travel. For those looking for a little less in a Class A motorhome, this small option should make your list to explore.
