European soccer clubs set for U.S. tour this summer

Real Madrid, AC Milan, FC Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea will take part in the 2024 Soccer Champions Tour, which will see six matches played in the U.S. from July 27 to Aug. 6. Games will be played at Bank of America Stadium, Camping World Stadium, M&T Bank Stadium, MetLife Stadium, Soldier Field and Yankee Stadium. With the World Cup coming to North America in 2026, the "profile of the sport is growing, and friendlies featuring some of the biggest teams in soccer can only help generate more interest." Pre-sale tickets for all matches will be available on March 25, and general tickets go on sale March 27 ( N.Y. POST, 3/19 ). The Soccer Champions Tour was created by investment firm Sixth Street and works closely with Legends. It is additionally produced in partnership with AEG, which oversees tour operations, team operations, stadium relationships and ticket sales ( SBJ ).

The dates for the tour overlap with the Paris Games, which "could impact a number of players." Clubs are "prioritising the U.S. for pre-season due to expected market congestion" in 2025 and 2026 with the FIFA Club World Cup and the World Cup ( THE ATHLETIC, 3/19 ). The matches on July 27 and 30 are in partnership with Florida Citrus Sports' FC Series ( SBJ ).

European clubs visit USA for friendly-filled summer

June 20, 2023

Alejandro Canelón

usa tour european teams

Soccer never stops. Welcome to another busy summer of soccer in America!

It’s one of our favorite traditions, one that we really love. Nearly every year, different American cities will welcome some of the best soccer teams in the world. From Real Madrid facing Barcelona in another big edition of El Clásico (we see you, Texas!) to Manchester United — one of the most popular Premier League clubs in the U.S. — clashing against Borussia Dortmund in America’s new favorite sports destination: Las Vegas.

Whether you are a hardcore fan or you just want to enjoy some of the best soccer players in the world, you won’t want to miss the more than 20 matches across the country.

Everything kicks off on July 19 when the MLS All-Stars hosts Arsenal in D.C.’s state-of-the-art Audi Field. After a spectacular season that saw them fall to Manchester City in the last few weeks of the Premier League, the Gunners will hit the ninth-largest TV market in the United States and an area with some serious soccer passion — tickets sold out in less than five hours after being available to the general public!

On that same day, Sunderland — a historic English team that many will remember from Netflix’s breathtaking docuseries Sunderland ‘Til I Die — will play their second match on American soil when they face the second USL rival of their 2023 U.S. tour: New Mexico United at Albuquerque’s Isotopes Park. The Black Cats, who were captained by American international Lynden Gooch in the Championship playoff games against Luton Town, will play their opening match on July 15 against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field. Their last stop will be in Cary, NC where they face North Carolina FC.

Chelsea’s tour also kicks off on July 19 and also in North Carolina, a market where soccer has experienced an explosive rise in popularity in recent years. In 2022, Charlotte FC not only set a new MLS single-game attendance record in its home debut with 74,479 fans, they also had the second-highest attendance in the league.

Chapel Hill — just a 30 minute drive from Cary — will host the Blues when they face Welsh club and American TV sweethearts, Wrexham AFC. Even though Christian Pulisic has been linked with many different clubs in the last few weeks, many still expect to see him in America, especially when Chelsea visits Philadelphia — in Pulisic’s home state — to play Brighton on July 22, as part of the Premier League Summer Series , a five city tour hitting Atlanta, D.C., New York, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The Premier League’s first summer tour on U.S. soil will feature six PL clubs and some of the leagues best players. In addition to Chelsea and Brighton, Aston Villa (hola World Cup champion, “Dibu” Martínez!), Brentford, Fulham (with USMNT duo Antonee Robinson and Tim Ream), and Newcastle – will hit the East Coast in late July.

July 22 is certainly a date to keep in mind since it will be a day of top-class soccer in America, from coast to coast. Just 100 miles away from Lincoln Financial Field, Manchester United and Arsenal will meet for the first time in the United States at Metlife Stadium, a venue that has hosted pretty big soccer matches in the last few years, including a Madrid Derby in which Atlético Madrid thrashed Real Madrid 7-3.

Twelve years have passed since the last time Manchester United visited New York/New Jersey, America’s leading TV market. This match will mark the start of their two-week U.S. tour where they will also face Wrexham in San Diego (July 25, sold out), Spanish giants Real Madrid in Houston (July 26) and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas (July 30), “bringing the most famous football club on the planet to the entertainment capital of the world.”

In just the last few years, Las Vegas has become one of the most coveted sports destinations. For evidence, look no further than the NHL, WNBA, NFL, and a potential MLB franchise with the Athletics leaving Oakland (not to mention that the city will host its first Super Bowl next year and the Final Four in 2028). Now it’s time for fans to enjoy top-class soccer on the Strip when United takes on Gio Reyna’s Borussia Dortmund.

But going back to July 22 (don’t forget to mark your calendars!), on the west coast, the Bay Area will welcome two clubs with huge American fan bases in Barcelona and Juventus. The two historic sides will meet at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara as part of the Soccer Champions Tour , a competition in which six teams will play eight matches in 10 days. That’s how we like our soccer served!

As part of this tour, Real Madrid and Barcelona will play another edition of El Clásico in the U.S. This will be the third time that Blancos and Culés meet on American soil, having already faced off in Miami in 2017 and in Las Vegas in 2022. This time, the old rivals will clash at AT&T Stadium in Arlington and the 80,000 capacity venue is expected to be sold out, even though it has been considered by many the most expensive soccer game in history with an average price tag of $504.

The action continues in August when Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund visit Chicago to play in a fan-favorite stadium: Soldier Field. Yes, Pulisic and Gio can meet one more time in America and in such an iconic venue. Fingers crossed.

Last but not least, LaLiga will have a double-header at beautiful Oracle Park in San Francisco, California. Atlético Madrid will face Sevilla and Real Sociedad will take on Real Betis on August 5th.

There’s also quite a few games that haven’t been listed here but that will definitely create a scheduling squeeze for us fans of the beautiful game in the U.S.

But that’s a good problem to have, right? Let the games begin!

Arsenal, manchester united and liverpool announce 2024 usa tours, share this article.

Three of the Premier League’s biggest clubs are coming back to the United States this summer.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool all announced on Friday that they will be heading to the U.S. in the summer of 2024 as they prepare for the 2024-25 campaign.

Arsenal and Manchester United both visited the U.S. last summer, while Liverpool will be returning for the first time since 2019.

The teams announced three total games on Friday, with more set to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Arsenal will play against Manchester United at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on July 27. The Gunners will then face Liverpool at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on July 31.

Manchester United will also take on Liverpool at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on August 3. It will be the first major soccer match held at the home of the University of South Carolina football team.

Last summer , Arsenal faced United at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, and also played Barcelona at SoFi Stadium. The Gunners kicked off their USA tour in Washington D.C. as the opponent in the 2023 MLS All-Star Game.

“We know how great SoFi Stadium is after our sold-out match there last year. The facilities are incredible and we’re excited to return. We look forward to making further announcements about our trip soon,” said Gunners sporting director Edu.

“We are proud to announce our highly anticipated return to the USA, providing a great environment for the squad to prepare for the season ahead,” added Liverpool’s commercial director Ben Latty.

“AEG is excited about the partnership with Soccer Champions Tour and Legends to bring the most successful soccer clubs in the world to fans across the U.S.,” said Tom Braun, the senior vice-president for soccer and business operations at AEG. Braun oversaw a five-game tour July that drew more than 93,000 fans to the Rose Bowl to see Real Madrid beat Juventus.

That was the largest crowd for a soccer match in the U.S. since July 2018.

Alex Waxman, co-founder and CEO of Sixth Street, said the company has plans to expand the tour to include women’s teams.

“While this year’s tour consists of men’s clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world’s best women’s clubs to local audiences around the globe and to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence.”

Premier League US tour: Schedule plus TV and ticket details

usa tour european teams

The Premier League has announced a major summer tour involving six clubs across five cities. In total, there will be nine matches between Premier League teams in the United States in 2023 as part of this summer tour. Note that this does not include Arsenal or Manchester United , who both have individual summer friendlies planned in the United States this year.

The six clubs making the collective trip across the pond are Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Fulham and Newcastle. Each team is playing three games in the United States as part of this summer series across five venues. Games are in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Harrison and Landover. The latter two are just outside of New York and Washington, DC, respectively.

This is the first time the Premier League is making a collective league effort to play a preseason tournament in the United States. In the past, teams traveled individually, but still played Premier League teams often. For example, the Florida Cup last year pit Arsenal against Chelsea .

Premier League US tour schedule

These games take place over a nine-day span from Saturday, July 22 to Sunday, July 30. The action starts in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, with a total of three games over that weekend. Chelsea plays against Brighton on Saturday before Fulham plays Brentford and Newcastle takes on Aston Villa.

Then, on Wednesday July 26, there are three games. Two are in Atlanta, which are Brentford-Brighton and Chelsea vs Newcastle. The third game is in Orlando as Fulham faces Aston Villa.

The last set of games start Friday, July 28 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ. Brighton and Newcastle conclude their USA ventures at the home of the New York Red Bulls. Then, on Sunday, July 30, there are two games at FedEx field in Landover, MD. Aston Villa battles Brentford before London clubs Chelsea and Fulham play.

How to watch

In addition to announcing the schedule, the Premier League also clarified that NBC is in charge of broadcasting the games. NBCUniversal’s family of channels, including USA Network as well as Peacock , have coverage of games throughout the preseason tournament.

You can also start to think about tickets to watch these games in the United States. Pre-sale tickets open on Tuesday, April 25. One day later, general sale tickets go on sale.

As soon as more ticket details are announced, we’ll share them in this article.

The North Americans Racing the 2024 Tour de France

There’s no Sepp Kuss, but that doesn’t mean that riders from the U.S. and Canada won’t make a big impact at this year’s Tour.

cycling ronde van vlaanderen race men

Unfortunately for American fans at this year’s Tour, there will be no Sepp Kuss . Still battling the effects of COVID-19, Kuss, who won the 2023 Vuelta a España, was taken off Visma-Lease a Bike’s roster for the Tour de France.

Here’s a look at the North Americans competing in the 2024 Tour de France:

Guillaume Boivin (Israel-Premier Tech)

Premier Tech is a Canadian company, so it’s nice to see the team staying true to its identity by bringing three Canadians to the 2024 Tour de France. Boivin will be starting his fourth Tour in a row this year, and while he’s never recorded a high stage finish of his own, the 35-year-old is the exactly kind of selfless, strong, and experienced support rider a team needs while hunting for stage wins. If Israel-Premier Tech leaves the Tour with a stage victory (or two), expect Boivin to have played a role in making it happen.

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

topshot cycling fra dauphine

Gee exploded onto the scene in last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored six top-5 stage finishes including second-places finished on four stages in the Italian grand tour. It was only his first grand tour, but the then-25-year-old’s career also finished second overall in the Giro’s Points and King of the Mountains Classifications.

All those second-place finishes seem to have inspired the Canadian heading into 2024: he took the first WorldTour victory of his career by winning Stage 3 at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné–then hung around the top of the General Classification to finish third overall. But don’t expect him to shoot for a high GC finish at the Tour de France; he’s hunting for the stage victories that eluded him in last year’s Giro. And given the way he’s been riding, we won’t be surprised if he wins more than one.

Hugo Houle (Israel-Premier Tech)

Houle has started and finished every edition of the Tour de France since 2019. At first he was purely a domestique, riding on behalf of his GC captains at Astana. But then he moved (along with Premier Tech, who formerly sponsored Astana) to Israel-Premier Tech and was offered more opportunities to ride for himself.

Well, he took full advantage in 2022, when he scored a breakaway stage win (in the Pyrenees, no less) on Stage 16–just a few days after finishing third on Stage 13. The 33-year-old will get more chances this year, and his experience will prove invaluable to guys like Gee, who’s riding his first Tour de France and looks to be the cornerstone of the team’s opportunistic plans.

Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike)

cycling fra dauphine

Even though he’s only 24-years-old, Jorgenson will be starting his third Tour de France this year, and his first since transferring from Movistar to Visma-Lease a Bike during the off-season. The kid from Idaho impressed everyone during his first two Tours, racing aggressively in pursuit of stage wins, coming close to winning a stage on multiple occasions.

But he’s reached new heights with Visma. First, he won Paris-Nice in early-March, defeating riders like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel to take the biggest win of his still-young career. A few weeks later he won Dwars door Vlaanderen, a cobbled semi-Classic in Belgium. But his biggest breakthrough came at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early-June, where he raced like a Tour de France contender, riding consistently throughout the entirety of the 8-day stage race and almost stealing the overall victory from Roglič on the final stage.

He’s heading to the Tour in support of Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard. But if Vingegaard proves to be less competitive than the team hopes, Jorgenson could be given a chance to ride for himself–whether that means shooting for a high GC finish or a stage win we don’t exactly know. No matter what, Jorgenson is the most exciting rider American fans have had to root for in a while, someone who looks to have the makings of a future Tour de France champion.

Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost)

Quinn turned 24 in early-May and the American celebrated by winning the national road race championships in Charlestown, West Virginia nine days later. He then took his new stars-and-stripes jersey to the Critérium du Dauphiné, where he raced well enough throughout the week to have probably earned himself a spot on EF’s roster for the Tour de France.

This will be only the second grand tour of the American’s career, but we don’t expect the event to be too big for him. If he makes his team’s roster, expect to see him feature in a few breakaways, possibly as one of the riders looking to take an early lead in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition during the Tour’s hilly opening weekend.

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost)

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 3

Powless will be starting his fifth Tour de France on Saturday, and he’s raced all of them with EF Education-EasyPost. The 27-year-old’s best Tour finish was twelfth overall in 2021, and last year he spent twelve days in the polka dot jersey as the leader of the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition.

This year we’d love to see Powless commit to winning a stage, which means not worrying about the GC standings or wasting energy chasing KOM points early in the Tour. He needs to sit down with the race bible, identify three or four stages that suit him the best, and then make those stages the focus of his entire Tour de France, essentially racing them like a series of one-day races–with long, hard training rides in between. With that kind of approach, he’s a good bet to take EF Education’s first Tour de France stage victory since 2022.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

The Summer of Stars is coming: Here's everything you need to know

Doug McIntyre

With the biggest World Cup in soccer history now just two short calendar years away, the summer of 2024 offers the perfect dress rehearsal.

This June and July, three of the planet's six FIFA-designated regions will align in the form of the European Championship and the second expanded Copa América in eight years — one that will bring current World Cup-holders Argentina , record five-time champions Brazil and eight other South American teams to the United States to compete with the hosts, Mexico's fanatically supported El Tri plus four more of North and Central America and the Caribbean's best.

It all starts when the Euros kick off on June 14. Over just two decades, the beautiful game's second-largest international tournament has gone from a niche pay-per-view product in the U.S. to a quadrennial staple on the American sports calendar.

"Not a lot of big sporting events are going on in the U.S. in the summer, and soccer kind of takes center stage," former U.S. midfielder and current FOX Sports soccer analyst Stuart Holden said in a phone interview this week. "The Euros kind of feels like a mini World Cup."

This year's event promises to be the highest-profile yet. Host Germany boasts more large stadiums than any other country on the continent; just one of the 10 selected (in 10 host cities) seats fewer than 49,000, all but ensuring that Euro 2024 will shatter the record 2,427,303 fans who attended France 2016 eight years back.

Bayern Munich's sparkling Allianz Arena will stage the opener between Die Mannschaft and Scotland . The historic Olympiastadion in Berlin is a fitting place for the final. And for those watching at home, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate will provide a backdrop every bit as iconic as the Eiffel Tower or Sydney Opera House were during the last two Women's World Cups.

Reaction to the UEFA Euro Cup Draw — what is the group of death? | SOTU

Reaction to the UEFA Euro Cup Draw — what is the group of death? | SOTU

All eyes will be on the Euros for a full week before Copa América joins it as an equal under the global spotlight. On June 20, just a few hours after Denmark and co-favorite England meet in Frankfurt and recent champions Spain (2008, 2012) and Italy (2020) square off in perhaps the most awaited contest of the group stage in Germany, Lionel Messi and his Albiceleste open the Copa at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta against either Canada or Trinidad and Tobago . On June 24, the combined Copa/Euro schedule features contests involving Brazil , Italy and Spain — countries with 10 World Cup titles between them.

If four games across both tourneys in one day will be a treat for soccer lovers, the lineup on June 25 and 26 is positively heaven-sent. No fewer than a dozen Euro and Copa matches will be played during that single 48-hour period, with Messi's Argentina, Harry Kane's England and Kylian Mbappé's France all in action on the 25th.

Factoring in stoppage time, it means that more than half of each day — 12 hours-plus — will be filled with high-stakes, world-class, must-see soccer. And of course, there's an added perk for supporters in the U.S., with the home team hoping to reach a Copa final for the first time after making the semis in 1995 and 2016.

"That's the beauty of the Copa when it's in this format," said Holden, who could start his summer at the Euros before coming home to call the USMNT's group stage matches. "The U.S., Mexico and Canada are obviously familiar teams to people on this side of planet, but then you're mixing in powerful and historic soccer nations, and genuine superstars. It's a recipe for people to jump on the bandwagon and get excited about it.

"But as much as we love seeing these big teams come here," Holden added, "I don't think anything is more important than seeing the U.S. team do well."

That imagination-capturing momentum should grow as the summer wears on. While the frequency of games will dwindle as teams get eliminated in the knockout rounds, the stakes will grow exponentially. Four do-or-die quarterfinals are set for July 6, two in each tourney, with a Euro and a Copa semi slated for both July 9 and 10. July 14 will see the new champions of both Europe and the Americas on the same day for the first time ever, with Miami's Hard Rock Stadium the pick for the Copa decider.

Eighty-three games in all will have been played by the time the Summer of Stars is done. That's not quite as many as the 104 we'll see at the first 48-nation World Cup in 2026, but it will still be an unprecedented celebration of the people's favorite sport — and a fitting tune up for what's to come two years later in cities across North America.

Yet as much as that hotly anticipated World Cup is already starting to appear on the horizon, this summer's festivities will stand on their own.

The world's game has never been in a better place in the U.S., which is also set to host the first 32-team FIFA Club World Cup next year. With an ever-growing MLS now fronted by Messi himself and massive NFL arenas from coast to coast ready to be temporarily converted into first-class soccer cathedrals, the country is ready to become the game's epicenter over the next 30-odd months.

That journey starts on parallel tracks this June – first with the controlled intensity of the Euros, then with Copa matches that can be more street fights than fútbol – though the quality on display is every bit as high as on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

"The European teams play each other so often you get these fast-paced, tactical games," Holden said. "Then you have the last Copa America final between Brazil and Argentina, which was basically a bloodbath for 90 minutes."

Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: One Last Time | SOTU

Lionel Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: One Last Time | SOTU

This summer could also be the last time we see living legends like Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modrić suit up in their countries' colors. Messi will turn 37 during the first week of the Copa. Modrić and Ronaldo are already 38, with the latter celebrating another birthday next month.

Two years in international soccer is an eternity. But the Summer of Stars will be here before we can blink, and it will be glorious. For five weeks, what happens in games played at the highest level will be on everyone's screens and on everyone's lips in every other corner of the globe – not least right here at home.

"You're getting an opportunity over the next couple of years to see and touch genuine, competitive high-end soccer," Holden said. "If you can watch this and not get excited about the 2026 World Cup, I'm not sure you have a pulse."

World No. 1 golfer Nelly Korda has pulled out of a Ladies European Tour event in England next week after a dog bit her, she announced in a statement on Instagram on Friday.

Korda, 25, was scheduled to play in an LET Aramco Team Series tournament Wednesday through Friday at Centurion Club in Hemel Hempstead, England. Last year, she won the 54-hole tournament outside London by 4 strokes over Charley Hull for her third career LET victory.

"I regret to announce that I must withdraw from next week's Ladies European Tour tournament in London," Korda said in the statement. "On Saturday in Seattle, I was bitten by a dog and need time to receive treatment and recover fully."

Korda didn't say where the dog bite is. She was competing in last week's KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington, in which she missed the cut for the third time in as many starts.

"I apologize to the LET, the sponsors, and my fans for my absence," Korda said. "Thank you for your understanding, and I look forward to returning to the course soon."

Korda didn't say when she planned to return to action. The LPGA Tour is taking a break after this week's Dow Championship in Midland, Michigan. The next scheduled tournament is the fourth major of the season, the Amundi Evian Championship in Evian-les-Bains, France, on July 11-14.

After becoming the fourth LPGA golfer to win six times before June 1, including five victories in a row with her second major title at the Chevron Championship on April 18, Korda has cooled off considerably. She missed the cut at the U.S. Women's Open, Meijer LPGA Classic and the KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

Korda, the defending Olympic gold medalist, is scheduled to represent the U.S. in the women's golf competition Aug. 7-10 at Le Golf National outside Paris.

Tour de France 2024 riders and teams: Every cyclist at this year’s race

A packed peloton of the world’s best cyclists are set to do battle across 21 stages at the 2024 Tour de France .

An historic edition sees the Grand Tour start in Italy and end with a time trial in Nice for the first time since the race’s inception.

Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is back to defend his yellow jersey after making a swift recovery from injury to bid for a third successive general classification crown, but familiar foe Tadej Pogacar will be out to usurp his old rival having already won the Giro d’Italia this year.

Mark Cavendish , meanwhile, is set to ride his final Tour as he targets a record 35th stage win after delaying his retirement from the sport.

In all, 176 riders from 22 teams will contest the Tour, with the 18 World Tour outfits joined by four Pro Tour invitees.
