Wayanad – an introduction

wayanad tourist places to visit

The largest plateau region of Kerala, the one where the mighty eastern and western ghats guarding the peninsular India meet is what best describes Wayanad. It is a large district in Kerala, landlocked and covered in dense green forests, wildlife sanctuaries, tea gardens spanning miles and miles, lush green paddy fields, beautiful hills and waterfalls and natural lakes. So, in short, Wayanad is natural beauty at it’s best!!

Top regions of Wayanad

wayanad tourist places to visit

Wayanad district is broadly divided in 3 major regions :

  • Sulthan Bathery in the east
  • Kalpetta in the south west
  • Manthanvaadi in the west and north west

Each of these regions is beautiful by all means, has several comfortable homestays, hotels and luxurious resorts. But, if you want to explore all the places to see in Wayanad in one trip, you will need to stay a few nights in each of the three regions and then explore around. We are sharing in a later section below a sample day by day itinerary to explore all the top places to see in Wayanad along with recommendation on where to stay in each region.

As for us, since we live in Bangalore which is not very far from Wayanad. So, Wayanad makes for a perfect weekend getaway from Bangalore for us. As a result, we are exploring Wayanad region by region over different trips. And for the same reasons, we didn’t include Wayanad in our week long trip exploring Kerala . Years back, on our first trip to Wayanad we stayed in a resort in north west of Wayanad. And on our way back to Bangalore from there, we visited Edakkal caves – the most famous of the places to see in Wayanad. But located in South east Wayanad district!! So, I must say, I had no understanding of the whole geography of the region at that time.

wayanad tourist places to visit

In April 2023 , we did our second trip to Wayanad and our first staycation trip to Wayanad. This time, we stayed for one night in the Manthanvaadi region , in Thirunelli Village at the Mayookham Resort. And visited the nearby Thirunelli Temple , one of the top places to see in Wayanad. And for the second night we stayed at Raindrops Resort in Sulthan Bathery . While returning from here to Bangalore, we crossed the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and spotted some animals there.

wayanad tourist places to visit

Sulthan Bathery is closed to Bangalore and thus attracts the most number of tourists. However, this area has a main town that has developed fast over the last few years. So, I will encourage my readers to explore further in the south, north and west of Wayanad. As these areas are still unexploited, full of dense greenery and solitude. Also, The Banasura Hills and Banasura Sagar Reserve are two very stunning regions in the west of Wayanad, located in Manthanvaadi region . So, these are the next top places to see in Wayanad in our bucket list. And then comes the Vayithri village in Kalpetta region . Full of forests and beautiful waterfalls, the Vayithri region is also home to several top resorts in Wayanad.

Best places to see in Wayanad

Having set the context on different regions of Wayanad, now lets get started with the top places to see in Wayanad.

Bamboo Forest Park – a one of a kind among places to see in Wayanad

Wayand tops the bamboo growing regions of Kerala. And as such, there are several grooves or rather forests of bamboo in Wayanad. But the one near Sulthan Bathery is very famous among tourists. And this bamboo forest is developed like a park. Which is perfect for a slow walk in the middle of the nature, with tall bamboo trees from either side making an arch. The pathway runs along a narrow stream leading all the way to the kabini river and the Kuruva Island.

wayanad tourist places to visit

Kuruvadweep – a unique one among places to see in Wayanad

The Kuruvadweep or Kuruva Island is another beautiful place to visit in Wayand. Actually, it is a natural island formed by the looping stream of Kabini river. And one can reach here through a small ferry ride of some 5 minutes. Also, the Kuruva Island is famous habitat for many species of flora and fauna found in this region of India. Overall,. it makes for a relaxed picnic getaway from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary – one of the many places to see in Wayanad for wildlife

Wayanad region is abundant in several wildlife sanctuaries. Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is one of them. This wildlife sanctuary is located on the Kodagu road, 20km from Manthanvady. A safari is offered in this wildlife sanctuary in a jeep. Wherein you have the opportunity to site several animals including tiger, panther and elephants.

Thirunelli Temple – a historical site among places to see in Wayanad

Thirunelli Temple is one of the oldest temples of Kerala and India. It is said that the God Brahma created this temple and dedicated it to lord Vishnu. The outer structure of the temple is almost in ruins now but the main shrine is intact. And the reconstruction is planned soon. The temple is located in a very scenic location with dramatic backdrops of mountains. Visiting here on my trip to Wayanad reminded me of my visit to temples located in similar backdrop on my trip to Bhutan and also in Palampur .

Vilangad Water Falls – one of the places to see in Wayanad for that music of water

A beautiful waterfall located on the border of Kozhikod and Wayanad districts of Kerala, the Vilangad Water Falls is a must visit among places to see in Wayanad, particularly if you are in this region. If you want to visit here, or any other waterfalls in Wayanad, the best time to visit will be post monsoons in October or November when the water volume is at its best. We followed the same strategy when we visited the majestic Athirapally waterfalls on our week long trip to Kerala .

Mudikkal waterfalls

Yet another beautiful and unexplored waterfall of Kerala, the Mudikkal Waterfall is located in Ernakulam District, on the border of Wayanad. If you are in this region, do visit this waterfall in Wayanad.

Pakranthalam Churam View Point

The Pakranthalam Churam is a stunning view point located almost on the border of Wayanad and Calicut district of Kerala. One can get spectacular views of the surrounding dense forests, lush green mountains and some beautiful valleys on the plateau of Wayanad from this view point. And that is what makes it a must visit among the places to see in Wayanad.

Banasura Dam view point

If you ever searched on the internet for Wayanad, there is a 100% chance you have seen this drone shot of the beautiful Banasura Reserve in Wayanad from the Banasura Dam View Point. It is almost like the signature of Wayanad. And why not! The views of the region are so stunning from this view point, unlike any other place in Wayanad or in India that I have seen. Reminds me of the emerald lake in Ooty that we witnessed while staying at Destiny Farmstay in Ooty .

A view of the stunning Banasura Reservior above!!

Banasura Lake – the best of the places to see in Wayanad

After viewing the Banasura Reserve from the Banasura View Point, I am sure no one can resist going down to the Banasura Lake. The Banasura Lake is one of the biggest lakes in Wayanad. A pristine lake with several small islands in between. Once again, I couldn’t help but draw comparison to the boating that we did in Rangnathittu Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka. There also, there were several islands in the river. And boating in such a setting is a different kind of experience altogether.

wayanad tourist places to visit

Wayanad tea museum

The tea of Wayanad is very famous. You will see a lot of lush green tea gardens just like how you see in Munnar, particularly in the south and west regions of Wayanad. So, it only makes sense to have a tea museum on the list of places to visit in Wayanad. The Wayanad Tea Museum south of Banasura region is a perfect place to learn the history of tea cultivation in Wayanad, along with a knowledge of the different tea species grown here. And take a virtual trip about how the tea cultivation has evolved in this region over a period of time.

Lakkidi view point – a must among places to see in Wayanad

Yet another beautiful view point located atop a plateau hill in the Lakkidi district is the Lakkidi view point in Wayanad. It gives a stunning view of the plateau far and wide. And one can see as far as across the border of the Wayanad district from here. As you move from Wayanad tea museum to Chembra Peak, you can stop at Lakkidi view point on the way. So, add it to your list of places to see in Wayanad.

Chembra Peak

The Chembra Peak is the highest peak of the Wayanad district. It is located at an elevation of 2100 meters above the sea level. It is also one of the most popular trekking areas in Wayanad. But if you want to go up there in a vehicle, you must have a jeep like vehicle as the path is not very even and well laid out. However, you reach the Chembra Peak, once there, you will be stunned by the mesmerizing views all around it.

wayanad tourist places to visit

Glass Bridge 900

Located in the Vayithri village of Wayanad, the glass bridge 900 is a glass bottom bridge as the name implies. And is a famous spot if you are looking at that little rush of adrenalin walking on a glass bottom bridge which feels like walking in the air.

Soochipara Waterfalls

The next stop on your list of places to see in Wayand is Soochipara Waterfalls. It is the only three tire waterfall in Wayanad district. I had visited a similar waterfall near Bangkok on my trip to Thailand . And one near Munnar in Kerala. Post monsoons when the volume of water is highest in the waterfalls, it makes for the best time to visit here. The waterfall is located in the middle of dense forests!!

wayanad tourist places to visit

Meenmutty water falls

Perhaps the most visited waterfall in the Wayanad district, the Banasuramala Meenmutty waterfalls is located very near to the Banasura Dam in the Banasura Reserve of Wayanad. Trekking through stone steps one can get upclose to this watefall. And post monsoons, the waterfalls assume enormous volume. so, undoubtably, that is the best time to visit here.

What a beautiful place to visit! Not going to lie I had to look up the location! I think the waterfalls and especially wildlife safaris is where you’d find me! Love the lush and greenery!

Thank you. Wayanad is not world-famous, so it’s expected that you might not know about it.

I wasn’t familiar with this place, glad you included a map. My husband and I love to hike so I’m intrigued with that. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new place! Saving for future reference.

The tea estates are high on my list and now I need to add spice plantations. The smaller owned plantations would be ideal to see the entire process, without crowds of people. The map really helps demonstrate how far apart everything is.

Thanks Jen. Hope you visit the tea gardens of India soon!

What an incredible itinerary. Amazing how just three short days can give you such a wonderful diverse experience.

Thanks Karen. I read and dream a lot about slow travel but unfortunately most working professionals like us don’t have the luxury of time. These short weekend trips are what keeps our wanderlust spirit alive.

Is coffee and tea from India that different from the once in europe`?

I have to admit, that I have never even heard of this place :O Shame on me, but I give a great thanks for the education 🙂

Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

This looks like the type of place to slow travel your way through. I like the idea of using homestays to explore this part of the world, but how to you find out where they are. Is there a website that lists them all?

Hi Jay, The homestays for Wayanad can be searched on the Indian hotel booking sites like MakeMyTrip.com or even on HotelsCombined. Makemytrip has separate category for homestays.

Jumping on a bamboo raft to reach Kuruva island looks like an amazing adventure!

Thank you for sharing so much helpful information Sinjana! This looks like a beautiful area. I love the idea of a homestay on a coffee plantation. That would be so interesting to learn and connect with the farmers. The waterfall looks gorgeous. So many things to do in this area. It would be hard to narrow down choices. I can see why you’d want to stay for at least a few days.

Thanks Nancy. This is a beautiful part of India. You must visit if you are travelling to India

India is beautiful and this post gives a comprehensive guide of a place I had never ever thought of travelling to. Thanks for sharing

How did I manage a trip to Kerala but not know about Wayanad? Roaming around lakes, forests and tea plantations sounds heavenly. Would love to stay on a coffee plantation. If you can’t get a proper coffee there, where can you!

This is such a beautiful part of India and I am so glad that things are improving after the horrible floods. It certainly is God’s country with all the culture and hertiage

Wayanad looks beautiful! I hadn’t heard of it before, but now I want to pack my bags! Soochipara Falls would be a must-see for me, but the caves and lookout look stunning too.

Did not know about this place and your highlights have certainly made me think of including it in my itinerary if I should visit this part of the world. Love the lush green and the views.

The waterfall photo is lovely. Wayanad is a beautiful place that I didn’t know anything about. The raft ride looks fun, too!

Wow! Breathtaking area! Just wonderful for a weekend getaway. I love the scenery and your photos are spectacular!

I must confess to having to google Wayanad. It looks like a beautiful place to visit with spectacular scenery. Thank you for telling me about this hidden treasure.

Wow great itinerary! Very well thought out!

Wow, Wayanad sounds like such a fascinating place in India. Before reading your article I had never heard of it and now I want to visit. The caves sound particularly interesting. Thanks for all the great information.

Wayanad is truly fascinating! We visited the place a few years ago and your post evoked the nostalgia about this place. The best time to visit is always the cooler time of the year as Kerala can get quite humid in summer. 🙂

Amazing itinerary!!! It looks like you have covered almost every place. A very detailed, inspiring and informative post, all pictures are extremely beautiful.

nice, India blogs always makes me excited to explore. love from London…

If we wish to do a complete experience of Wayanad and around (don’t minnd more travel too) because we have 8 days, what do you suggest? How many days in Wayanad and how many elsewhere?

Hi Reshal, If you have 8 days you can easily spend 3 full days in Wayanad. After that you drive to Oooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal if you are into forests and hills. Or you can head south to the beaches. Feel free to reach out to me with more questions.

This looks brilliant! I love the kind of holiday that involves interesting history (Edakkal Caves is fascinating) aaaand so much nature, viewpoints and waterfalls! I can totally see why you loved Wayanad.

Thanks a lot Josy

This is a great itinerary very informative. I hadn’t heard of Wayanad before, but it looks like a great travel destination. I’ll save this post for later when planning a trip there.

Thanks a lot Lenore

Dark tourism: Why some people derive voyeuristic pleasure from visiting places where tragedies occurred

In the wake of the wayanad landslide tragedy in kerala this year, we try to understand the psychology behind why dark tourism is becoming increasingly popular..

wayanad landslides, dark tourism

P icture a town frozen in time, its streets eerily quiet, nature slowly reclaiming abandoned buildings. No, that was not the description of a post-apocalyptic film set but of Pripyat, a ghost town near Chernobyl. Believe it or not, before the Russia-Ukraine war brought travel to a complete halt, tourists would flock there by the thousands each year.

Welcome to the world of “dark tourism” or “thanatourism,” where natural disaster sites and scenes of historic horrors become unlikely travel destinations .  From the killing fields of Cambodia to the 9/11 Memorial in New York, these sites draw visitors like moths to a flame — or perhaps more aptly, like pilgrims to a shrine.

wayanad tourist places to visit

D K Ghatani, travel consultant at Sikkim Tours and Expeditions, tells indianexpress.com , “Dark tourism — a term coined in the 1990s — involves visiting places associated with death, tragedy, or suffering.”

“Human beings have a natural curiosity about death and tragedy,” Dr Alisha Lalljee, psychologist, special educator and psychotherapist based in Mumbai , reveals. She notes that visiting such sites may fulfill a need to understand tragic events that occurred there. For some, such visits could also be something to boast about.

But what is the appeal? Is it morbid curiosity, a quest for understanding, or something deeper?

The recent Wayanad tragedy, where a series of landslides took the lives of over 400 people, shed light on this controversial yet fascinating aspect of modern travel. After noticing several tourists visiting the spot days after news about the tragedy made headlines, the Kerala Police were forced to release a statement on X urging people not to visit the disaster-stricken area. “Do not head to tragedy-hit spots for sightseeing. It will affect rescue operations. For help, please call 112,” the statement read.

Festive offer

The intent behind these visits , which could include sites like former concentration camps, battlefields, natural disaster zones, or locations of historical atrocities,  varies. Some people are driven by a desire to understand history, pay their respects, or confront the realities of human nature. For others, it may stem from curiosity or the thrill of exploring the macabre.

Jatinder Paul Singh, CEO and co-founder of Viacation, reveals that over the years, he has observed how people approach these sites. “Visitors now come not simply to witness events from afar but to reflect on the personal stories and human experiences behind the tragedies.”

Pripyat, the ghost town near Chernobyl was a popular spot for dark tourism

The emotional and psychological impacts dark tourism

Malika Chandra, psychotherapist at MC Psychotherapy, believes dark tourism, despite its heavy emotional impact, may have some positive outcomes. “We are reminded of our mortality, and it brings us in touch with our empathy,” she says. However, the impact can vary greatly depending on the individual’s personal history, emotional resilience, and the nature of the site itself.

Neha Cadabam, senior psychologist at Mindtalk, however, notes that the emotional impact “varies depending on the individual’s personal connection to the event and their mental state.” For some, these visits can lead to feelings of reverence and reflection, while others may experience discomfort or distress.

Frequent exposure to tragic narratives can lead to emotional exhaustion or desensitisation. As Dr Lalljee explains, repeated visits to sites of intense suffering can trigger re-traumatisation and worsen mental health if not approached with caution. This makes it crucial for frequent dark tourists to engage in self-reflection and seek support if needed.

Respect vs. thrill-seeking: What is the fine line?

A central challenge in dark tourism is distinguishing between respectful visits and those driven by morbid curiosity. Psychologists note that the line between these motivations can be blurry and often depends on the visitor’s approach and mindset.

Aanandita Vaghani, founder and mental health therapist, UnFix Your Feelings, points out that the distinction can be subtle, with respectful visits sometimes overlapping with elements of learning and exploration. “The key difference is in the underlying motivation and emotional engagement of the visitor,” she says.

There’s no straightforward answer to whether dark tourism is ethical, according to Vaghani. “Some view dark tourism as voyeuristic and exploitative of human suffering, while others see it as an opportunity for education, engaging with history and reflection,” she said.

“Ethical considerations play a crucial role here; it’s essential for visitors to approach these sites with respect and mindfulness of the pain and loss they represent,” Cadabam stresses.

Tourism industry experts emphasise the importance of site management in shaping visitor behaviour. “Commercialisation should be handled cautiously to prevent diminishing the gravity of the events,” says Singh. The focus should remain on education, reflection, and fostering understanding.

Sensitivity to the emotional weight of the site is vital, ensuring visitors grasp the human suffering behind the history while preserving the site’s dignity and cultural integrity. Well-designed memorials and educational programs can encourage a respectful atmosphere, while sensationalised presentations may attract those seeking a more voyeuristic experience.

Best practices in dark tourism management

Effective management of dark tourism sites is essential to balance education and respect. Ghatani advocates for incorporating firsthand accounts and survivor testimonies to provide authentic, accurate narratives. “This approach not only adds credibility but also connects visitors more deeply with the human aspect of the history,” he says.

Singh stresses the importance of using guided tours, multimedia, and curated exhibits to ground the stories in accurate historical facts and encourage reflection, rather than just observation. “By grounding the stories in accurate historical facts, these practices help visitors appreciate the depth of human suffering and leave with a sense of responsibility and respect for the past.”

Sensitivity to the emotional weight of the site is vital, ensuring visitors grasp the human suffering behind the history, while also preserving the site’s dignity and cultural integrity. Well-designed memorials and educational programs can encourage a respectful atmosphere, while sensationalised presentations may attract those seeking a more voyeuristic experience.
