Fred Olsen Balmoral ship's 78-day South America and Antarctica cruise starts Portsmouth UK's 2023 season

CruiseMapper logo

2023 will see Portsmouth Port UK (England) host more maiden calls/welcome back cruise companies, as it continues to strengthen its place as the first choice for expedition and luxury cruise brands.

The initial release of the port's 2023 schedule will see many passengers begin their voyages in the city, or alternatively stop in the Port to experience the range of world-class attractions.

It all started on January 5th with an epic 78-day voyage on Fred Olsen ’s ship MS Balmoral . The once-in-a-lifetime journey (themed as "Exploration of South America and the Antarctic") gives passengers a rare chance to capture the icy landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula in February. Scenic cruising highlights feature the Patagonian Fjords in Chile , a Panama Canal transit , and South America's Cape Horn . Overnight in-port stays are scheduled for Callao-Lima (Peru) , Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) .

The schedule features multiple calls from Saga Cruises UK , as the British company starts using Portsmouth as a seasonal homeport. Saga's Spirit of Adventure is scheduled to make numerous visits to the city after her naming ceremony in 2021, along with the sistership Spirit of Discovery .

Passengers will be able to explore exciting global destinations, including the Caribbean, South America, and New England. There are also voyages to the Mediterranean and Ireland for guests looking to stay closer to home.

The schedule features maiden visits for a range of lines and ships, such as TUI’s Mein Schiff 3 , which at 293 metres will break the record for the largest ship at the port. The ship will call at the port on May 26th, July 8th, and August 1st.

Another maiden call is expected from Viking OCEAN 's latest ship Viking Neptune - the first to be equipped with a hydrogen fuel system for onboard power. The innovation fits with the cruise port’s ambition to become carbon-neutral by 2030, as well as emission-free by 2050.

The port is building a carbon-neutral extension to its terminal building, after receiving GBP 11.25 million in funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. It will be ready for a grand opening in the summer of 2023.

Port of Portsmouth UK (England)

Due to an increase in cruise ships visiting the port, the transformation is necessary in order to create capacity to manage an anticipated additional ~250,000 passengers per year, in addition to the current 2 million. It will create 2500+ jobs nationally, including 550 in the port city.

Each cruise ship call is expected to generate up to GBP 1.5 million through port charges/passenger & crew spend on local goods/services like hotels and attractions, as well as supplies to the ship.

Customer reviews for Queen Victoria

An absolutely superb cruise on Cunard Queen Victoria, our first with Cunard. A stunningly beautiful ship, traditional in style welcomed us in Rome. Exceptional service was received from the outset, our cabin was superb, well appointed, with a large balcony and extremely friendly and professional cabin steward. Food in Britannia restaurant was excellent, Lido buffet style was good for excursion days, service from our dedicated waiters in Britannia and the on board bars was always first class, they were exceptionally professional, polite and friendly. The entertainment from external acts was superb, however Cunard's own theatre team did not live up to expectations which was most disappointing. Very limited visibility of other Entertainment team employees, apart from the two directors. Excellent cruise itinerary in the Mediterranean, excursions in each port were superbly organised and provided lots of historic information. Sadly, there were no celebratory sail away parties on board as we left each port, just a band playing on deck. Gala evenings were fabulous though, most passengers dressed for the occasions and photographers captured the moment. As part of this cruise package, Iglu organised a 2 night stay in Rome, arranged a lovely hotel and all transfers, everything ran seamlessly, drivers arrived on time, and were most polite and courteous. This was our first experience of utilising Iglu, and we shall book further vacations with them in the future, an excellent experience from start to finish. Thank you to all staff who helped with the arrangements for our holiday, we had the most amazing time!

group

Thank you Iglu cruise for arranging our cruise and stay holiday. Everything went well. Transfers were spot on, Taj hotel you recommended was perfect. Cruise with Cunard Queen Victoria from Cape Town to Southampton was great too. I will most certainly book with Iglu Cruise again. We believe we got great value for money. Especially since we extended our stay in Cape Town.

couple

Very enjoyable time.

We booked this in the first quarter of 2023 when it was cold, wet and dismal. We knew it would be similar in November and found a good priced 12 nights with Cunard, on the Queen Victoria, going to the Canaries. When we boarded in Southampton, all the Christmas decorations were up and the ship looked wonderful.. We were allocated a Deluxe Inside cabin which was huge, on Deck 1 and so calm and quiet. We never use our cabin throughout the day, preferring to take advantage of the activities, table tennis especially, or talks from interesting speakers. We knew all the ports we went to and having been on many excursions in those ports in the past, there was plenty to see within walking distance of the Cruise Terminals. The whole cruise was so relaxing and achieved exactly what we wanted at this time of year.

78 day south america cruise

Most South America cruises run from November through early May. Since the seasons are opposite of the U.S., this is essentially summer in South America.

South America is a huge continent encompassing many different regions, so cruise line presence will vary depending on where you intend to cruise. Holland America, Celebrity and Princess Cruises are among the mainstream cruise lines with offerings throughout the region, luxury lines like Oceania and Crystal frequent South American ports and expedition lines like Hapag-Lloyd and Lindblad can take you further south.

What are some things to do in South America?

Do you need a passport to take a cruise to south america.

Yes, passports are required for South America cruises.

What should I pack for a cruise to South America?

What you pack will vary greatly depending on where and when you visit South America. Check the local weather and pack for any possible conditions. Some locations, like Machu Picchu in Peru, are at a very high altitude; to avoid altitude sickness be sure to hydrate (maybe pack a reusable water bottle) and follow local recommendations.

South america cruises reviews.

Great organisation and excellent staff
This trip was everything and more than I hoped for. Apart from some problems with Avianca airline which is out of Intrepid’s control, the trip ran smoothly and covered all the things it said it would. The scenery and wildlife were spectacular, the crew were very professional and the food was in abundance. Nothing seemed to be a problem to them. My cabin had one bed light not working that I reported and also the toilet seat was very loose making it interesting in rough seas! and there was a broken handle which had been hidden in the drawer none of which was an issue as I was lucky enough to have the cabin to myself. I would query the location of the hotel accommodation and ask why it is not closer to the historical town? EVERYTHING else was just perfect- really!
Overall, it was great. The guide Johan and the crew were nice and helpful, paying attention to safety. The ship was clean. The hot tub could be a little hotter. The shower handle was marked wrong, pointing cold for hot water, though we figured out on the 2nd day (another passenger told me). Meals were pretty good, but snacks served at the deck when we return from a day trip were the most enjoyable. Coffee/tea cups were not enough - I would have taken a personal mug if told in advance. The last night/morning harbored at Puerto Ayora was very hard for us. The choppy water caused us motion sickness, and we felt swaying for a few days after the trip.

When is the best time to visit South America?

The best time to take a cruise holiday to South America depends on the region you want to explore and the specific experiences you’re seeking.

Generally, the Southern Hemisphere’s summer, from December to February, is an excellent time to explore countries like Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay when the weather is warm and conducive to outdoor activities. This is also a great time to visit iconic destinations like Patagonia and the Galapagos Islands.

For those interested in experiencing the Amazon rainforest or the Andes Mountains, the dry season from May to September is preferable, as it offers clearer skies and more comfortable conditions for jungle trekking and high-altitude adventures.

It’s also essential to consider factors like local holidays, festivals and peak tourist seasons. It’s always a good idea to consult with one of our cruise agents who will give you the best advice!
