Our Complete List Of Cheap Trick Band Members looks at the musicians of a band formed in 1973 in Rockford, Illinois. The band’s original lineup consisted of vocalist Robin Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen, bassist Tom Petersson, and drummer Bun E. Carlos. Everyone loved this band instantly when they first broke onto the scene in 1977.
Robin Zander
Robin Zander, the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, joined Cheap Trick in 1974. His joining marked a significant turn in the band’s sound and style. Zander’s first album with the band was their self-titled debut, “Cheap Trick,” released in 1977. He has been a consistent presence in the band, contributing to all their albums, including classics like “In Color” (1977), “Heaven Tonight” (1978), and the live album “Cheap Trick at Budokan” (1979), which catapulted them to international fame. Zander’s powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence have been central to the band’s identity. Outside Cheap Trick , he released a solo album, “Robin Zander,” in 1993, showcasing a more eclectic range of musical styles.
Rick Nielsen
Rick Nielsen, the band’s eccentric lead guitarist, backing vocalist, and primary songwriter, is known for his flamboyant stage presence and multi-neck guitars. Nielsen is a founding member and has been with Cheap Trick since its inception. His songwriting and unique guitar playing are integral to the band’s sound, contributing significantly to all their albums. Nielsen’s quirky and innovative guitar work is especially notable on albums like “Dream Police” (1979) and “All Shook Up” (1980). Apart from his work with Cheap Trick , Nielsen has collaborated with various artists and is known for his vast guitar collection.
Tom Petersson
Bassist Tom Petersson, another founding member, was with the band from 1973 until 1980 and then rejoined in 1987. He is credited with inventing the 12-string bass guitar, which became a hallmark of the band’s sound. Petersson played on the band’s early albums, including their breakthrough “Cheap Trick at Budokan.” After his initial departure following “All Shook Up,” he pursued a brief solo career and released an album with his then-wife Dagmar. Petersson’s return to the band for their 1988 album “Lap of Luxury” brought back a key element of their classic sound. He continues to be an integral part of the band.
Bun E. Carlos
Drummer Bun E. Carlos, a founding member, was with Cheap Trick from its formation until 2010. His solid, straightforward drumming style was a foundational element of the band’s rhythm section. Carlos played on all of Cheap Trick’s albums up until his departure, contributing to their classic sound. His drumming on tracks like “I Want You to Want Me” and “Surrender” is particularly notable. After leaving the band, Carlos remained active in the music scene, playing with various groups and working on solo projects, including the 2016 album “Greetings from Bunezuela!”
Daxx Nielsen
Daxx Nielsen, son of Rick Nielsen, officially joined Cheap Trick as their drummer in 2010, replacing Bun E. Carlos. He had previously filled in for Carlos on various tours since 2001. Daxx’s energetic drumming style brought a new dynamism to the band. He has played on recent albums such as “Bang, Zoom, Crazy… Hello” (2016) and “We’re All Alright!” (2017), contributing to the band’s continued evolution and success in the new millennium.
Pete Comita
Pete Comita briefly played bass for Cheap Trick after Tom Petersson’s departure in 1980. Although his tenure with the band was short, he contributed to the recording of several tracks, some of which appeared on the album “One on One” (1982). After leaving Cheap Trick, Comita continued his career as a session musician and played with various artists.
Jon Brant joined Cheap Trick as the bassist after Pete Comita’s departure, playing with the band from 1981 to 1987, and briefly in 2004-2005.
