The centre of Lower Slaughter

No Cotswolds day tour from Bath would be complete without visiting the delightful villages of the Slaughters.

Lower Slaughter

Lower Slaughter is totally unspoilt and is a traditional Cotswold village. The only nod to commercial activity is the restored 19th century flour mill.

The last flour was produced in 1958; today visitors can browse a gift shop and admire the huge water wheel.  http://oldmill-lowerslaughter.com

Upper Slaughter

The most noteworthy part of Upper Slaughter is the square of cottages, that were reconstructed by the famous architect Sir Edward Luytens in 1906.

5)Northleach

We travel south alone the Roman Road ( the Fosse Way) to reach Northleach – a town celebrated across Europe as a major centre for the Cotswold Wool Trade.

St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church.

The most important site is that of the 15th Century Wool Church of St.Peter and St. Paul. It was built with the wealth of the woolmerchants. The Cotswold Stone used to build the church came from the town’s quarry – now the Market Square.

The wealthy woolmerchants are remembered with memorial brasses set out on the church’s floor. Some of these woolmerchants are shown to stand on woolsacks and sheep to emphasize the source of wealth.

6 easy day trips from Bath to Cotswolds (without a car)

By Author Lucy Dodsworth

Posted on Last updated: 12 July 2024

The beautiful city of Bath is famous for its golden stone Georgian terraces, Roman history, steaming spa waters and links to literary figures like Jane Austen and Mary Shelley. But Bath’s location at the south of the Cotswolds also means you can use it as a base for exploring the region.

Although the easiest way to take day trips from Bath to Cotswolds is by car, you can also do it using public transport – which has the bonus of avoiding Bath’s busy traffic and the search for parking spaces. But bus and train services in the Cotswolds don’t always run very frequently or connect well with each other, so you need to choose the right destination for your day trip.

6 easy day trips from Bath to Cotswolds (without a car)

Unlike places like Cheltenham and Oxford , Bath’s limited bus connections make it a bit more difficult to use as a base for visiting the Cotswolds. But we’ve picked out six destinations which you can easily visit on a day trip from Bath, using a combination of buses and trains.

Getting there doesn’t involve coordinating multiple connections, and most of the destinations take under 90 minutes to get to from Bath, so you can easily get there and back in a day.

If your favourite spot isn’t on the list, we have also rounded up other destinations in the Cotswolds that you can get to from Bath using public transport at the end of the post. But these have more complicated connections or limited services so may be better suited to longer trips.

For links to all bus timetables, see our guide to the Cotswolds by public transport . And if you’re travelling by car instead, our town and village guides give details of parking.

6 easy day trips from Bath to Cotswolds without a car

1. bradford on avon.

The Wiltshire town of Bradford on Avon makes an easy day trip from Bath, and shares the same golden stone buildings along with a scenic setting on the banks of both the River Avon and Kennet and Avon Canal – perfect for walks on the towpath or canal boat, kayak or paddleboard trips.

Explore the town’s range of ancient buildings, which includes a Saxon church, Norman bridge and one of the best preserved medieval tithe barns in the country. There’s also a great selection of independent shops and restaurants, including in the pretty cobbled street The Shambles.

How to get there : Bradford on Avon is eight miles southeast of Bath. There’s a direct train line connecting Bath Spa station to Bradford on Avon, which takes around 12 minutes. There’s also the First D1 bus from Bath bus station to Bradford on Avon which takes 40 minutes.

Or you can walk between Bath and Bradford on Avon . It’s around 7.5 miles on a panoramic route via Claverton Down and the Kennet and Avon Canal (taking 3–3.5 hours one-way). Or there’s a flatter 10-mile version which follows the canal the whole way (taking 4–4.5 hours one-way).

The Town Bridge in Bradford on Avon

2. Castle Combe

Castle Combe’s historic charms have made it a popular film location , featuring in movies like Stardust and War Horse . Not much has changed in the village for generations, with many original 15th-century buildings. Take a photo at the bridge over the By Brook – one of the Cotswolds’ most photographed spots – or head out into the countryside on a 6.2-mile circular walk .

You can also treat yourself to lunch in the grand Manor House Hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant or in the cosy Castle Inn and White Hart pubs. Or head up to the Castle Combe Race Circuit in the upper part of the village to try out car racing or watch their car and motorbike events.

How to get there : Castle Combe is 12 miles northeast of Bath. To get there, take a direct train from Bath to Chippenham (11 minutes). Then catch the Faresaver 95/95A bus from Chippenham train station to Castle Combe. It takes around 20 minutes but isn’t all that frequent, with five services a day in each direction on weekdays, three services on Saturdays and none on Sundays.

3. Malmesbury

Known as ‘The Queen of Hilltop Towns’, the market town of Malmesbury is the oldest borough in England. Explore the spectacular Malmesbury Abbey, which was built in the 12th century and later turned into a parish church, with part lying in ruins and part still used for worship.

Visit Abbey House Gardens next door to the abbey to wander around the five acres of gardens and admire their collection of roses. Find out about the town’s history at the Athelstan Museum. And have a drink at the Old Bell Hotel, rumoured to be the oldest hotel in England.

How to get there : Malmesbury is 25 miles northeast of Bath. Take the train from Bath to Chippenham (11 minutes). Then catch the Coachstyle 99 bus from Chippenham train station to Malmesbury, which runs once an hour and takes 35 minutes (excluding Sundays).

Malmesbury Abbey

Lacock is just east of the official Cotswolds boundary, but is often included as part of the region and makes a great day trip from Bath. This unspoilt village is owned by the National Trust , and despite it only having four streets there’s lots to see, plus a selection of shops, cafés and pubs.

Tour Lacock Abbey, a country house which started life as a nunnery and appeared as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Visit the Fox Talbot Museum to learn about one of the pioneers of photography. And shop for jams, plants and crafts from honesty boxes outside local homes.

How to get there : Lacock is 14 miles east of Bath. Take the train from Bath to Chippenham (11 minutes), then the Faresaver X34 bus from Chippenham bus station to The George Inn in Lacock (13 minutes). It runs every 30 minutes on weekdays, and hourly on Saturdays and Sundays.

Half-timbered building in Lacock village

The historic wool town of Tetbury has the Royal seal of approval, with King Charles III’s home at Highgrove just a few miles away. Take a walk up the Chipping Steps, a medieval set of cobbled steps lined with former weavers’ cottages which used to be an old entrance to the town.

Visit the Gothic Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalen, which has the fourth tallest spire in the country. And look out for bargains in the town’s antique shops. Tetbury is also known for its quirky festivals like the annual Woolsack Races and Wacky Races in May.

How to get there : Tetbury is 25 miles north of Bath. The Stagecoach 620 bus runs from Bath bus station to Old Sodbury (65 minutes), where it meets the Stagecoach 69 bus which carries on to Tetbury (30 minutes). There are around five services a day, but none on Sundays.

6. Westonbirt Arboretum

Close to Tetbury, Westonbirt Arboretum has one of the best collections of trees and shrubs in Europe. It was founded by Victorian collector Robert Holford, who sourced specimens from across the world, and now has over 15,000 trees from 2500 species across its 600-acre site.

Follow a seasonal trail to see rhododendrons and azaleas in spring, magnolias in summer, colourful leaves in autumn and the Enchanted Christmas light trail in winter. Head up into the canopy on the Treetop Walkway, join a guided walk or follow the family-friendly Gruffalo Trail.

How to get there : Westonbirt Arboretum is 3.5 miles south of Tetbury. To get there, follow the same route as for Tetbury but get off the 69 bus earlier after around 15 minutes.

Cotswolds Private Tour From Bath

Bibury

The beauty of your private Cotswolds Tour from Bath is the freedom and flexibility that it gives you on the day.  This tour has a set itinerary where we have a recommended route. Here we have combined idyllic villages with the more famous Cotswold towns. This gives you a wonderful overview and experience of what the Cotswolds is all about. As it is a private tour we are totally flexible as to how long you would like in each place. We are also very flexible and are more than happy to modify the itinerary on the day if you would like.

Places we visit on our private Cotswolds tour from Bath?

  • Castle Combe
  • Bourton-on-the-Water
  • The Slaughters
  • Stow-on-the-Wold

Paint me a picture:

Departing from your hotel at 9am, you’ll start the day by visiting the fairytale village of Castle Combe. Undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of the southern Cotswolds.

From here we continue on to Lacock. This is the charming village, home to a wonderful Abbey and many small artisan shops. A place where Harry Potter, Pride and Prejudice and many movies and TV shows have been filmed.

We then head up to the central Cotswolds, to the iconic Arlington Row in Bibury. With its crystal clear waters and wonderful old Cotswold cottages.

From here we head to arguably the most famous Cotswolds town and regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England; Bourton-on-the-Water. Known as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ there is plenty to see and do with a wealth of attractions, shops, restaurants and tea rooms. This is also an ideal place to have a spot of lunch.

After lunch we drive to England’s most romantic village – Lower Slaughter. Without a doubt one of the most picturesque villages in the whole of the Cotswolds. We walk along its bubbling brook to an ancient flour mill as the sun gradually goes down. When the sun is low and it catches the honey coloured limestone buildings, it is a sight to behold.

Then finally as our journey comes to a close we stop off at Stow-on-the-Wold, the highest town in the Cotswolds. Here you’ll have time to browse among honey-coloured buildings, cosy pubs, narrow streets, interesting shops and tiny tea rooms.

We then drive back to your hotel for 5.30-6pm.

Cotswold Tour A

Cotswold explorer 9 hour tour from bath.

Visiting: Castle Combe, Malmesbury, Bibury & Arlington Row, Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter, Tetbury (photo stop)

This tour will take you through the beautiful landscapes of the Cotswolds to explore some of the most enchanting villages of this area.

Castle Combe , once a weaving town at the heart of the Cotswolds wool trade and described as the prettiest village in England – it has featured in films such as War Horse and was the fictional Puddleby-on-the Marsh in Dr. Dolittle, the 1960’s film with Rex Harrison. The village is built around the 14th-century Market Cross with the old water pump beside it.

Malmesbury is a traditional market town with charming streets and a thriving high street full of independent traders. It has a rich history as England’s oldest borough and a stunning 12th century Abbey,  original market cross and tomb of King Athelstan.

Bibury , a charming, typically Cotswold village was once described by William Morris (1834-96) as “the most beautiful village in England”. In fact, Fox News says that Bibury is one of the world’s most picturesque villages.

Arlington Row (in Bibury) was built in 1380 as a monastic wool store and converted into a row of weavers’ cottages in the 17th century. The charming row of cottages is featured in the film “Stardust and is possibly the most photographed location in the Cotswolds.

Bourton-on-the-Water is a ‘must see’ for all visitors to the area. This popular village is often referred to as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ because of the attractive little bridges that cross the gently flowing River Windrush, which runs through the centre of the village.

Lower Slaughter , a 10-15 minute walk from Bourton on the Water takes you off the beaten track to this quiet, unspoiled village where we can stop at the cafe for a simple lunch. Lower Slaughter stems from the Old English name for a wet land ‘slough’ or ‘slothre’ (Old English for muddy place) upon which it lies.

*For those not able/wishing to walk to Lower Slaughter, there is an option to remain in Bourton on the Water for lunch, re-joining the rest of the group at the minibus afterwards.

Tetbury: Driving south, through the beautiful landscape of the Coln Valley, we will make a brief photo stop in Tetbury, an important market town in the Middle Ages, for the Cotswolds wool trade. The town is known as an ‘architectural gem’ as many of the wool merchants houses still look as they did 300 years ago and the town centre is still dominated by the splendid pillared Market House built in 1655.

Prices: Adult £40   Senior/Student £38   Child £20  Infant £5

Cotswold Tour B

Cotswold discovery 7 hour tour from bath.

Castle Combe, Malmesbury, Bibury & Arlington Row, the Coln Valley, Bourton-on-the-Water, and a photo stop in Tetbury.

Driving south, through the beautiful landscape of the Coln Valley , we will make a photo stop in either Cirencester and Tetbury. *There is sometimes time for a brief photo stop in both.

Cirencester was the second largest town in Britain during Roman times. Cirencester’s market square is dominated by the cathedral-like Parish Church of St. John Baptist (one of the largest in England). The large south porch with its impressive fan vaulting was built about 1490. (photo stop)

Tetbury: , an important market town in the Middle Ages, for the Cotswolds wool trade. The town is known as an ‘architectural gem’ as many of the wool merchants houses still look as they did 300 years ago and the town centre is still dominated by the splendid pillared Market House built in 1655.

Book Your Tour

There are different categories of accommodation available from B&B accommodation to Village Inns to small & luxury hotels. Ensuite rooms are booked where possible, in some B&B's a private bathroom may be necessary.

B&B accommodation is generally in guesthouses, often private residences where some of the rooms are used for guests. They are also often smaller in size than Inns or hotels. All of our selected B&Bs will give you a warm welcome with a hearty breakfast for you in the morning. Because these are often private residences, there may not be the facilities you would expect to find in dedicated accommodation establishments. And they do not generally have options for dining in the evening.

Village Inns are generally larger, they may cater for only guests or they may also be a pub which also has guest rooms. They generally tend to have more in the way of facilities and have some kind of bar or dining options and are generally larger establishments than B&B’s

Hotels are usually the biggest of the establishments that we use and are more dedicated just to accommodation than B&B’s or Inns. There is a wide variety of hotels in The Cotswolds ranging from small hotels, to hotels with restaurants, to award winning luxury hotels.

Our journey begins by departing London and travelling west into the beautiful countryside of the North Wessex Downs. The first stop of our tour will be the charming and unique village of Avebury , home to the largest stone circle in the world. The village is set within the stone circle itself, making for a quirky scene where you can get close to the stones and even touch them. Take a relaxing stroll around Avebury and visit the historic church. Next, we continue to another charming location, the medieval village of Lacock . With an appearance that looks to be from a different era, this place has remained unchanged for several hundred years and retains a wonderfully unspoilt appearance. As a result the village has been a popular location for filming, and has appeared in productions such as Downton Abbey, Pride & Prejudice and Harry Potter. Take a wander around this small but delightful village. This afternoon we’ll arrive in arguably the most beautiful city in Britain; Bath . Founded by the Romans as a Spa town, the legend of the city suggests that the water here possess healing powers. Upon arrival we’ll travel straight to the overnight accommodation, and then the rest of the day will be free to explore. Whilst here be sure to visit the Roman Baths and absorb the beautiful Regency architecture of the Royal Crescent and the Circus. You may also wish to visit the Jane Austen Centre, stroll across the iconic Pultney Bridge and try the local delicacy: a Bath Bun. Tonight we stay in Bath.

How to Spend the Perfect 3 Days in the Cotswolds

Last Updated on 9th September 2024 by Sophie Nadeau

Ah, quintessential England ! Though it sounds cliché, it’s truly the only way to describe this pocket of rural countryside. The Cotswolds is exactly how the English countryside is depicted in movies, a romantic vision of cosy pubs, lovely stone cottages and quaint villages that belong on chocolate boxes.

If there’s one thing that rings true for the entirety of the region it’s that no matter which part you go to, it’s guaranteed to be beautiful. Here’s your guide on how to spend three perfect days in the Cotswolds!

Where to stay in the Cotswolds

Watch my cotswolds travel guide.

Many people don’t realise before visiting the Cotswolds just how vast of an area it actually spans. Covering almost 800 square miles, the region runs through five different counties, meaning there is a lot to see and explore.

With that being said, many of the quaint villages are just that- quaint- and easy to see within a short period of time. Therefore, 3 days or a long and lazy weekend is the perfect amount of time to explore and get a feel for the beauty of this part of the world.

lower slaughter at golden hour

The Cotswolds are not well served by public transportation, therefore you’ll need a car to explore the region properly. For those not used to rural England roads, you should know that some of them are more like little lanes and can be rather narrow at points.

You’ll likely find yourself reversing for a tractor or bigger car at some point, so bear this in mind if choosing a car rental.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Cotswolds are renowned for their accessibility and you can easily reach them from London via train. However, to see the full region or do this specific itinerary you’ll need a car. Check car rental comparison prices here.

Day 1 in the Cotswolds suggested itinerary

The first of many pretty as a postcard town’s you’ll visit, start in Chipping Campden, which takes its name from ‘Chepping’ that derives from the old English for ‘market’. This historic settlement enjoyed great wealth during the Middle Ages when wool merchants would opt to settle here and is currently home to over 270 listed buildings.

Home to one of the most beautiful streets in all of the Cotswolds, Chipping Campden High Street features a wealth of historic architecture as well as the iconic medieval Market Hall that sits in the heart of town.

Wandering through the Market Hall, it’s easy to imagine the small shelter alive with the hum of selling and trading goods. Though a market doesn’t take place in the original hall anymore, there’s a weekly market in the Town Hall which can be visited on Fridays from 9 AM – 11 AM.

Spend your morning simply soaking up the honey-coloured limestone houses, visiting a cosy café for a morning caffeine fix and getting a feel for the cosy ambience of a traditional Cotswold village.

chipping campden

The Cotswold Lavender Field or Hill Barn Farm is an attraction where visitors can wander through a fragrant sea of purple and feel the soothing properties of the vivid purple flower as they explore 70 acres of fields that roll through the landscape.

Between June and August, the farm opens their lavender fields, wild meadow flower field and distillery (where they create essential lavender oils) to the public so that visitors can learn more about their production process as well as enjoy the picturesque scenery of nature in bloom and the flourishing wildlife it supports. Read our guide on how to visit Cotswold Lavender here.

cotswold lavender

Close by to the Cotswold Lavender is the impossibly quaint and picturesque village of Snowshill, which is as cute as its name suggests! It’s also a filming destination for the popular box office hit ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’, the village was instead named ‘Snozzle’ and was where the protagonists parents resided (and the very place she met Mark Darcy!)

The village itself is fairly small and will likely only take 5 to 10 minutes to explore, but boasts sweeping views overlooking the Severn Vale to the west. Another point of interest to visit while in Snowshill is the eclectic collection and brainchild of Charles Wade which is housed within Snowshill Manor.

Snowshill Manor and Gardens is now managed by the National Trust, meaning you can spend a while here visiting the quirky collection of items (some rather mundane, which make them all the more special) that Wade collected throughout his lifetime. Read our guide on how to visit Snowshill Manor here.

snowshill church

The bustling village of Broadway, which is rather large in terms of a Cotswold settlement, but the perfect introduction into how cute this rural pocket of England is! Self proclaimed to be the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’ the village is well-associated with the arts and crafts movement, as well as the wool trade of the Middle Ages.

One of the best things to do while in Broadway is explore all the fabulous eateries, independent shops and galleries that can be found along the main High Street of the village, which is also lined with chestnut trees and period houses.

Broadway is home to some rather unique shops, The Man Cave , is a quirky gift shop that’s sure to leave a smile on your face. Other gift shops which are filled with handmade crafts and treasure are Whatever The Weather and Wild At Heart .

True to its name, it may come as no surprise that Broadway has been used as a breathtaking backdrop for several feature films thanks to its storybook style and cute stone houses.

broadway

High above a hilltop you can walk up to Broadway Tower, the highest castle in the Cotswolds that boasts breathtaking panoramic views – on a clear day it’s even possible to see as far as Wales!

A folly built at the end of the 18th century, the structure is made of limestone ashlar and stands 65 feet high. For a small fee, you can pay to visit the interior of the castle and uncover the nuclear bunker that’s concealed within.

Day 2 in the Cotswolds suggested itinerary

Stow on the Wold is a delightful little market town which was once renowned for its annual fairs where tens of thousands of sheep would be sold at once, the charming Sheep Street is named aptly after this.

Stow on the Wold takes its name from the Saxon ‘stow’ which means religious meeting place and ‘wold’ meaning rolling hill. One of the town’s most historic sights is the medieval church of St Edward’s which was built between the 11th and the 15th centuries.

The north door of St Edward’s church is somewhat of a hidden gem thanks to the fact it is flanked on either side by ancient yew trees.

These yew trees are said to be as old as the church itself and there have been claims made that Lord of the Rings writer, JRR Tolkien, drew inspiration from the door and its yews to create the Doors of Durin (the west gate of Moira). Read our guide on how to visit the yew tree door of the Cotswolds here.

stow in the wold yew tree door

If it’s not too early in the day, consider stopping for a drink at The Porch House, formerly known as The Royalists, which claims to be the oldest inn in England! The interior timbers are said to date back as far as 1,000 AD.

the porch house

Next head to the charming village with a rather macabre name, Lower Slaughter. Despite its suggestion of death, the settlement’s name derives from the old English ‘slohtre’ which means ‘muddy place’.

This is probably one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, built on both banks of the River Eye, the water gently flows past the honey-coloured stone houses that can be reached via small footbridges that cross over the stream.

lower slaughter

The twin village of Lower Slaughter, is Upper Slaughter, a tiny Cotswold village which also boasts a riverside location and sits sleepily on a grassy slope as the River Eye trickles past. One of the best things to do while exploring the village is to simply wander around and soak up the unspoilt feel of it.

Upper Slaughter, much like Lower Slaughter hasn’t changed for over a century and not a single thing has been built in the area since 1906!

In the heart of the village is the delightful and historic St Peter’s Church which tends to be open and free to wander around.

A Quick Guide to the best things to do in Upper Slaughter, a pretty and quaint village in Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds, England.

Bourton on the Water is the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ a magical settlement with tiny little bridges and quaint houses that lie along the river’s edge. Filled with cosy inns and taverns, charming teashops and home to The Cotswold Motoring Museum, where you can marvel at a collection of vintage cars and toys.

Home to one of the most unique gems of the Cotswolds , in Bourton on the Water you can view a tiny miniature replica of the village which even includes a copy of the River Windrush with real water trickling through the pint-sized settlement! Read out guide on how to visit the miniature Bourton on the Water model village here.

Another must-see spot in the village is the Dragon Fly Maze, which is a classic garden maze of neatly trimmed hedgerows that features hidden clues and puzzles, leading to a golden dragonfly in its centre.

If feeling peckish, a gorgeous 19th-century inn called The Mousetrap Inn is the perfect place to stop for a pub lunch. They have outdoor seating where you can sit and relax in the dreamy landscape of the village. (It also makes for a beautiful place to stay overnight!)

bourton on the water model village

Located along the River Windrush, Burford is yet another adorable town where you’ll find a whole load of medieval architecture which has lived through a fascinating history. The town’s strategic position means that the Cotswold settlement is often dubbed the ‘gateway to the Cotswolds’.

Burford is home to England’s oldest pharmacy (Robert Reavley) which has been in operation since 124. Close by, you’ll also be able to spy the Madhatter Bookshop , which is a quirky bookshop which also sells hats!

In the heart of Burford’s main high street is Antiques @ The George, which is a treasure trove of vintage items, second hand valuables, ceramics and wooden furniture, which can be explored over the three storeys of the shop.

Situated a little further down the high street, you’ll come across the Tolsey Museum, which is set within a Tudor-style timber-framed building and houses an exhibition which offers a glimpse into what life in the town may have been like many centuries ago. Read our guide on the best things to do in Burford here.

burford

The renowned English textiles designer and poet William Morris once said that Bibyre was the prettiest town of England, and we know he had good taste!

Perhaps best-known for Arlington Row, which is a series of quintessentially Cotswold cottages that are so quintessential in fact that they are even pictured within UK passports.

Arlington Row was first constructed in 1380 as a monastic wool store, by the 17th century it was then converted into a row of weavers’ cottages.

Today, it is one of the most popular and photographed spots in all of the Cotswolds and draws visitors in from all corners of the globe for its outstanding and untouched beauty.

arlington row

End your day by exploring the untouched town of Tetbury, which remains practically the same as it stood in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The oldest (and prettiest) part of Tetbury has to be that of The Chipping Steps, which are a picturesque set of medieval stone steps that connect the old marketplace to the heart of the town, lined by a row of adorable weavers’ cottages.

The Chipping Steps are one of the most photogenic parts of the Cotswolds and wandering down (or up) the cobbled stone walkway feels as though stepping back in time.

As mentioned earlier ‘chepping’ was the old English for market, and one of the most historic Market Houses’ resided in Tetbury, built in 1655. The village was most famously known for its trade in wool and yarn.

tetbury

Day 3 in the Cotswolds suggested itinerary

Start your day in the beautiful scenery of a timeless 17th-century garden which boasts views overlooking a deer park and the famous rolling hills of the Cotswold landscape.

Miserden is a family-run, rural estate that encompasses over 850 acres of woodland, farmland and gardens and provides a haven for wildlife and nature alike. Until the Middle Ages, Miserden was known as Greenhampstead (which is also named so in the Domesday Book).

For a fee, visitors are welcome to explore both the beautiful gardens and the historic manor house that was built in the 1620s by the Muszard family. One of the best views to see from a visit here is the view overlooking the iconic Golden Valley.

miserden gardens

The pretty town of Painswick, like many of the Cotswolds villages, first made its money in the wool trade. However, something unique to this particular settlement is the fact that its home to a churchyard with 99 yew trees, but legend says that if a 100th tree is planted, the Devil will destroy it.

Typical of the villages, Painswick is a maze of streets and ecclesiastical honey coloured buildings. There are also several independent tea rooms, as well as some of the very best places to stay in the entire region.

If you’re a fan of all things outdoor and garden related, then you simply must see the Rococo Garden which is situated on the outskirts of the village.

First founded in the 1700s, the green oasis is not like a usual garden, but instead a curious mixture of quirky follies and unusual landscapes. Today, the Rococo Garden remains one of the best examples of 18th-century British taste in England.

Stroud

End your adventures in the Cotswolds with a visit to Stroud, a charming market town which is home to one of the best farmers markets in the country, as well as countless independent shops and local eateries and taverns.

Stroud is much more bustling than many of the other villages you’ll have previously visited, with a population of over 13,500 (2021). And, it was hailed by The Sunday Times in 2021 as one of the best places to live in the UK thanks to its friendly spirit and abundance of green spaces and great quality schools.

One of the most fascinating visits to make in Stroud is to spy our the former textile mills along the valleys. The town is particularly known for its industrial heritage and to this very day working mills continue to make cloth for big events like the snooker or Wimbledon. At certain times of the year it’s even possible to take a guided tour of one.

If you have your own transport then no matter where you stay in the Cotswolds, you’ll easily be able to venture around and as mentioned, everywhere is beautiful! The price per night can vary depending on the season and of course, what your preferences for a srat are. Here are a few suggestions of where to stay (based on web reviews):
