Visiting the cruise spa has become a standard offering on the menu of cruise activities on most ships. Make the most of your cruise spa experience with our set of 15 practical tips.

Photo of woman receiving massage.

If one of your primary goals on your vacation is to relax, then you’ll want to be sure to check out the cruise spa. While cruise ship spas may vary in terms of size, price and luxuriousness, you will certainly find at least some basic standard services that can help you unwind and indulge your senses.

If you are inclined to maximize your relaxation opportunities by visiting the cruise spa, keep the following tips in mind so that you can make the most of the experience.

1. Visiting The Cruise Spa For An Open House Or Tour Is Actually Worth Your Time.

If you think you will be at all interested in getting spa services at some point during your cruise, you should make a point of visiting the spa on embarkation day . Usually there will be some type of open house or tours offered. This gives you a chance to see parts of the spa that otherwise require payment to access. And, it can give you a better idea of what services may actually be attractive.

Typically, you’ll find almost anything a spa-junkie’s heart could desire. Massages and facials of a wide variety. Some you will be familiar and some not. A variety of other body treatments (think seaweed and mud), thermal suites, different types of pools, ice rooms saunas, steam rooms, and more.

If your ship offers a thermal suite area, be sure to check it out. On newer ships with the more opulent spas, you will find thermal suites with heated ceramic loungers positioned before panoramic ocean views, tropical rain showers, thalassotherapy pool, whirlpools, saltwater hydrotherapy pools, salt rooms, snow grotto or ice room, and various aromatic experiences.

Often times the spa may be running specials that can only be purchased the first day. And, you won’t necessarily find out about these unless you visit the spa. So, for instance, on a recent sailing of Celebrity Edge there was a one day opportunity to purchase an all-cruise pass that allowed you full access to the premium areas of the spa for the entirety of the cruise. It was offered at a price substantially lower than what has previously been advertised online.

This also gives you the chance to assess the appointment situation. If you see services and times that you like available, you should go ahead and make a reservation. You will have a window to cancel or re-schedule without penalty.

2. The Onboard Cruise Spa Provides High Quality Services.

If you have never visited a cruise ship spa before, you might be skeptical as to the quality of service. But there’s no reason to worry. The spa has its own dedicated personnel. The companies that staff the cruise spa typically have training requirements that exceed those found in most state and local jurisdictions.

I have never been disappointed in a massage I received onboard.

3. Most Cruise Spa Services Are Strikingly Similar Across Cruise Lines .

Perhaps one reason you will find consistently good services is that most cruise ship spas are not actually run by the cruise lines. Rather, they are operated by companies that specialize in providing such services.

Although spa themes, decor and philosophy may differ across cruise lines, the menu of services and prices will be largely the same for many major lines because they are operated by the same company. Many cruise lines have all of their ship spas operated by Steiner Leisure (OneSpaWorld). Steiner works with more than 16 different cruise lines around the world, and operates spas on more than 130 different cruise ships. Some of its cruise partners include Royal Caribbean, Carnival, and Disney.

Several other cruise lines feature Canyon Ranch spas. You can find a Canyon Ranch cruise ship spa on Cunard, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas.

4. The Onboard Spa Offers High-Quality Products.

You will also find an abundance of spa products for purchase. Notably, Steiner has its own brands of high-quality beauty and spa products, such as  Elemis and La Therapie. And Canyon Ranch sells its own line of products as well.

Generally, these products are quite good. Indeed, I found my all-time favorite body wash at a cruise spa. And, I make a point of stocking up whenever I am onboard a ship.

5. Onboard Spa Products Can Be Surprisingly Expensive.

But, be aware that these very fine products can also be quite expensive. In recent years when I have gotten a facial, most of the recommended products came with a price tag in the price range of $100 – $150 per item. And some items exceeded that price by a very large margin.

You should also know that all of the spa technicians have been trained to sell products at the end of every session. So don’t be surprised. Of course, you are not required to buy anything. And, if you know that you won’t be purchasing anything and aren’t interested in hearing about products or seeing products, you can say so at the beginning.

6. Appointments Book Very Quickly.

Due to high demand, popular spa appointments fill up quickly. For instance, passengers may snap up all sea day appointments before embarkation day .

7. Look For Port Day Discounts And Specials.

Prices for spa services will usually be lower on days that the ship is in port than on sea days. And, you will often find special port day promotions that can offer good deals as well. For instance, pre-defined combinations of services for a reduced fixed price.

Something to keep in mind about port day specials and discounts is that the pricing often runs for the entire day. So, you may have an opportunity to get a discount or promotional price before the ship arrives in port. Or, after it sails away. This can be particularly significant on days where you have an early departure or a short excursion planned. This is also a way to still get the services you want even if you were shut out for all of the sea days.

8. Pre-book Spa Appointments Online If Possible.

If you have the opportunity to book spa services in advance online, and you know you want them, you should go ahead and book them. You won’t necessarily save any money by doing so, but it allows you to lock down an appointment.

9. Confirm Any Pre-booked Appointments Once You Arrive Onboard.

If you made spa reservations before you boarded the ship, you should confirm with the actual personnel on board.  Either call or stop by on your first day. There is a high likelihood that the spa will reach out to you to confirm, but either way make sure it happens.

Mistakes do happen. Sometimes time zone discrepancies can confuse people. Or, there may be technical difficulties that result in double booking or dropped appointments.

If a mistake has happened, it is fairly easy to sort it out on board. Just make sure you make time to do so.

10. A Missed Appointment Is Not Necessarily A Total Loss.

When you book an appointment, you will see a notation about the spa cancellation policy. For instance, failure to cancel at least 24 hours could result in a 50% or more charge. But, this policy is not necessarily strictly enforced. If something happens and you need to change an appointment once the deadline has passed, or even if you actually missed your appointment completely, the spa may still be willing to try and accommodate you.

Although you may not be able to get away with something like that on land, for whatever reason, the spa seems loathed to miss the opportunity to actually get you in there for your appointment. On more than one occasion, I have completely missed an appointment. Either because I was overly ambitious about an early morning start, or other plans ran over. In those instances, the spa folks graciously allowed me to reschedule after the fact without any penalizing fee.

So, if something unexpected happens, don’t be shy about calling to see if something can be worked out.

11. Your Bill Likely Already Includes Some Gratuity.

Most cruise ship spas will add an automatic 18% gratuity to your bill, so you should factor that in when reviewing your bill and deciding whether to leave anything additional. If you pre-booked online, you should note whether that price also included the automatic gratuity. (Most likely it did.)

12. You May Have Several Ways To Save Money On Cruise Spa Services.

If you have previously sailed on the same cruise line, you are likely a member of its loyalty program. Check and see whether your status entitles you to any kind of discount. Even the lowest tier membership may receive a discount or promotional pricing.

If you are sailing with someone else who is a loyalty program member, see if they plan to use their discount. If not, you can have them book an appointment for you. It will be charged to their cabin, but you can repay them in kind.

To date, I have not seen any restrictions on the ability to book appointments for other people and still receive the discount. And, I have personally done that for others as a gift (e.g., on Christmas cruises ).

You should also check the daily newsletter for special promotions or freebies. Sometimes the spa will host demonstrations where one or more of the attendees may be able to get a mini-version of the featured service for free.

13. Some Cruise Ships Offer “Medi-spa” Services.

Do you know what a medi-spa is? It’s short for “medical spa” which is basically a hybrid between a traditional spa and a medical clinic. A medical spa will offer some specialized services that you would more typically find at a dermatologist’s office or the office of another medical professional.

You can now find Medi-Spas at sea. Some larger ships have medi-spas with certified staff trained to provide Botox injections, teeth-whitening, and acupuncture.

14. Your Older Kids May Be Able To Enjoy The Cruise Spa Too.

Most spas have age restrictions, but some have services for tweens/teens. For example, Royal Caribbean has its YSPA program for guests 13 to 17. Teens can choose from a curated menu of massages, facials, hair treatments, and fitness classes.

Guests on treadmills facing oceanview in cruise ship spa.

15. Know The Difference Between Spa Services and Salon Services.

On most ships, the Spa will include some type of salon area for hair and nail services. This will either be in the spa itself or adjacent to it. Usually, you will find a full array of mainstream services for hair and nails that you would find at a land-based salon. (You will often find a gym or fitness center adjacent to the spa area as well.)

Something to be mindful of, however, is that both the spa and the salon will likely offer their own version of manicures and pedicures. The spa versions of the manicures and pedicures will be much more elaborate and likewise more expensive. If all you really want is for your feet to look good by the pool, or you want to touch up some acrylics, be sure to specify that you want salon services.

Taking a relaxing break in the spa can be a great way to slow down a hectic itinerary filled with excursions and activities. Or, if your entire cruise vacation centers on rest and relaxation, it can be a nice change from lounging on the beach or by the pool. Either way, take some time to check out what the cruise spa has to offer.

A Snob’s Guide to Spas on Ships

One definition of bliss at sea is padding down a ship’s hallway from your suite to the spa in a robe and slippers. Here’s what awaits.

Photo above: The wellness studio aboard Cunard's Queen Anne—a work-out with oceanic views.

The height of shipboard indulgence is no longer a windowless massage room below deck. Any self-respecting spa at sea now addresses the full gamut of wellness, fitness, and beauty needs: HIIT classes and Pelotons, snow caves and IV lounges, Tibetan singing bowls and quartz treatment beds. And, of course, all manner of fillers, injectables, skin tighteners, and collagen boosters. (As the old adage has it, travel can indeed be transformative.)

But don’t choose a ship purely for its spa. The cruise lines’ spas do differ from one another—but mostly because each line’s architects design them. The latest Celebrity ships—Edge, Apex, Beyond, and Ascent—have beautiful spas designed by Kelly Hoppen. Crystal’s gorgeous Aurora spas are the work of Tillberg Design of Sweden. The Mareel spa on Cunard’s new Queen Anne is by Sybille de Margerie, whose credentials include the Mandarin Oriental in Paris. But everything else—therapists, treatments, products, gadgetry—is managed by a dominant spa concessionaire, the Florida-based OneSpaWorld. (Some exceptions are Ponant, which works with French-owned Sothys; Viking, which uses LivNordic; and newcomer Explora Journeys, which manages its own spa and handpicks its partners.) Still, it’s useful to know what to expect. Here are some of the best spa “concepts” at sea:

spa on silversea's silver dawn cruise ship luxury cruising

The spa on the Silversea's newest ships—Silver Dawn, Silver Nova, and Silver Ray—is called Otium, a Latin word that can mean leisure, contemplation, even sheer indolence. Silversea stands by that civilized ancient concept, and by the fact that for Romans, baths were not so much places to get clean as spots to eat, drink, philosophize, or just hang out. Don’t be surprised if, after your treatment, you’re offered cocktails and chocolates instead of cucumber water, or if this indulgent vibe permeates other aspects of the cruise. My therapist on the Silver Dawn sent bath crystals with the same delicious lemongrass fragrance she had used in my massage to my cabin as a turndown treat.

Celebrity Cruises

heated loungers in the thermal suite of a celebrity ship

Did you go, er, overboard on a ship’s hospitality? A quick IV infusion of vitamins should turn things around. Celebrity ’s spas, simply called the Spa on its newest ships, have IV lounges offering an especially wide range of potions, promising everything from hangover remedies to detox, slimming, “youthful radiance,” even relief from hot flashes. All very Hollywood.

Explora Journeys

spa pool on explora journeys luxury cruise ships wellness

The Ocean Wellness spas on Explora Journeys ' two ships include two private spa “suites,” with their own outdoor relaxation space, and a thermal suite with salt cave, saunas, “ice fall,” and hydrotherapy pool, access to which is gratis, which is not the case on many other ships. There’s also a strong emphasis on fitness, with gym equipment on deck and Pilates reformer classes, which is rare at sea. You can also request a Technogym kit, including resistance bands and a foam roller, for your suite, and use the workout programming on the TV if you prefer to skip the gym.

luxury cruise ship seabourn ovation spa

While it may sound a little woo-woo, a sound bath, part of Seabourn’ s Mindful Living program (in partnership with integrative medicine guru Andrew Weil), is a truly trance-inducing experience. The “singing” of the bowls seems to go right through you, and it leads to deep relaxation. “Mindful living,” which permeates the ethos of the spa and many of the exercise classes, also extends ashore, with “healthy” excursions, such as a forest-breathing hike in Corsica, or al fresco yoga atop Santorini’s caldera.

warming cave in the spa of the viking octantis luxury expedition ship

In keeping with its Scandinavian roots, Viking has Swedish brand LivNordic 0perating its award-winning spas. (It's part of Raison d’Etre, which works with hotel groups such as Aman Resorts, Four Seasons, and Kempinski.) A must is the Nordic bathing circuit in Viking’s thermal suite, which goes something like this: sauna, cold plunge, back to sauna, snow grotto, sauna again, repeat. You’ll feel remarkably invigorated—provided you don’t skimp on the cold plunge and snow grotto parts.

Cunard's Queen Anne

thermal spa on cunard's queen anne cruise ship luxury cruising wellness

Cunard has teamed up with Harper’s Bazaar UK to create three wellness “journeys” in the new ship’s Mareel spa. Expect, over the course of three days, a combo of Elemis products (what the OneSpaWorld concessionaire supplies), spa treatments, and nutritional recommendations. Queen Anne 's Detox Journey includes hot and cold treatments, a salt stone massage, a cryo sculpting session, and a flower detox wrap. There are low-alcohol, almost guilt-free cocktails throughout the ship, too. (Kombucha Bellini, anyone?)

Crystal Cruises

sauna in the spa of the crystal serenity cruise ship

Crystal’ s Aurora spa offers LED light therapy, said to reduce inflammation, improve skin texture, even reset your circadian rhythms, and long-lasting but noninvasive Thermage, which smooths and tightens skin and increases collagen production. (Downside of doing something like Thermage on a cruise? You may want to stay out of the sun after.) The Elemis Biotec facial, also available, will do wonders in the short term. But it all does speak to the growing seriousness of spas on cruise ships—and the appeal of going home “new."

The Rules of Spa-ing at Sea

These hacks will help you navigate.

Sample the Products Ships sometimes offer a chance to try out the spa’s unguents early on in the cruise, or even get a mini-treatment. It’s worth it, despite the inevitable heavy sell. Book Treatments in Advance That way you can plan your days. No point scheduling a soothing body wrap before a six-hour onshore excursion in the Mediterranean heat. Consider a “Spa Suite” Celebrity Cruises’ Aqua Sky Suites, part of the Retreat enclave, give you access to the Sea Thermal Suite, a scented spa haven. Regent’s top-tier Regent Suite has its own spa. Snap Up Appointments on Port Days There will be last-minute deals when everyone has gone ashore. Chances are you’ll have the ship’s thermal suite—hot tubs, whirlpools, saunas, showers—to yourself before and after treatment. Book Way Ahead for Sea Days With no one distracted by time ashore, spas are busiest. But carefully consider the time slots you want: A massage before dinner is rarely a good idea (think wild hair covered in essential oils). Anticipate Formal Nights Onboard dress-up occasions are preceded by a flurry of primping: blow-drys, mani-pedis, facials. If you’re planning on going all out for the captain’s cocktails, book your salon appointment early. Beware “Lose Inches Immediately” Treatments Many ships offer Ionithermie, a quick fix. But if you see results, “they’ll only last 12 to 18 hours,” per the American Academy of Dermatology.

Booking Procedures and Tips

  • Spa Bookings: You should consider booking treatments in advance when planning to enjoy spa services on a cruise. Early reservations ensure a broader selection of treatment times, especially for popular services.
  • Embarkation Day: Many cruise spas offer an open house tour. This is the ideal time for you to inquire about services, schedule appointments, and sometimes secure discounts or special offers.
  • Online Booking: Some cruise lines allow you to book spa treatments online prior to sailing.
  • Shipboard Booking: You may also book treatments once on board, but availability may be limited during sea days or afternoons.

Tip: Book spa services on port days, as prices are often lower when the ship is docked and other passengers are ashore.

Spa Package Deals

Save Money: If you are interested in multiple treatments, you might benefit from package deals, which can offer cost savings compared to booking individually.

Cancellation Policies

To avoid potential fees, you should familiarize yourself with the spa’s cancellation policy. Cancellation is typically required 24 hours before the scheduled appointment.

Considerations Before Booking

  • Health Conditions: You should disclose any health concerns or allergies to ensure proper service.
  • Spa Location: Some treatments may be affected by the spa’s location on the ship. Facials and massages could be less relaxing if the spa is situated near high-traffic areas.

Note: Availability can vary greatly between cruise lines, and spa facilities are subject to the specific offering of each ship.

cruise ship spas offer a variety of spa packages

Spa Packages and Memberships

Cruise ship spas offer a variety of spa packages to cater to the diverse preferences of their guests. These packages often combine several treatments and are designed to provide a comprehensive spa experience , often at a better value than individual service prices.

Example Packages:

  • Relaxation Bundle: Typically includes massages, facials, and access to the thermal suite with steam rooms and saunas .
  • Pampering Package: May feature a combination of a massage, manicure, and pedicure, emphasizing a complete rejuvenation.

Memberships are available for those who plan to visit the spa frequently during their cruise. Members might receive:

  • Unlimited Access: To certain facilities such as the thermal suite or relaxation lounges.
  • Exclusive Discounts: On treatments and products.
  • Priority Booking: Ensuring members secure their preferred treatment times.

Guests should inquire directly with the cruise line or visit the ship’s spa to explore specific packages and membership options available on their sailing.

They also receive ongoing training to stay ahead of hospitality and wellness trends . Automatic gratuities are typically added, reflecting the industry’s standard for recognizing service excellence.

Guests who have never visited a cruise ship spa are often pleasantly surprised by the high caliber of services provided. From the moment a guest steps into the spa, the staff is attentive and ready to deliver a premium spa experience catered to individual needs and preferences.

Onboard Spa Etiquette

When visiting a spa on a cruise ship, guests should be aware of the etiquette to ensure a relaxing experience for themselves and others. The spa is a communal environment, and consideration is key.

Dress Code: Guests are expected to wear appropriate attire, such as swimwear, robes, and spa sandals, in treatment areas and relaxation spaces. This maintains a standard of decency and comfort for all.

Arrival Time: They should arrive at least 15 minutes early to their appointment to fill out any necessary forms and start relaxing.

Noise Level: Spas are zones of tranquility, so one must speak softly and silence their mobile devices to avoid disturbing the serene atmosphere.

Hygiene: A pre-treatment shower is often required to ensure cleanliness, and it’s good practice to use the steam room or sauna if available to open the pores before a treatment.

Gratuities: Offering a tip for service received is customary and can range from 15% to 20% of the treatment cost, depending on the cruise line’s policy and guests’ satisfaction.

Cancellation Policy: If a guest must cancel, they should do so with ample notice, typically 24 hours in advance, to avoid cancellation fees and allow others the chance to book the slot.

By adhering to spa etiquette , guests can contribute to a harmonious environment and enjoy their spa experience to the fullest.

The Best Cruise Ship Spa Treatments

Here's the bad news first. Cruise ship spa treatments are expensive. The good news is many ship spas, especially on the newer ships, are well-designed pleasure dens, some with ocean-view waiting rooms, fancy steam rooms and dozens of treatment options, ranging from the traditional massage and facial to trendier therapies like teeth whitening and acupuncture. Most standard 50-minute massages will cost you in the neighborhood of $90 to $120, not including the expected tip. On days when the ship is in port, you may find discounted treatments because most passengers are ashore and business is slower. Pricey or not, spa appointments get booked up fast on cruise ships, so make yours the first day of the cruise or pre-book online with the cruise line to avoid disappointment.

In the hundreds of spa treatments I've sampled on ships over the years, I've come to realize a treatment is only as good as the person doling it out. I remember a Swedish massage I had years ago on Royal Caribbean's Sovereign of the Seas on route to the Bahamas. Hardly a memorable ship or itinerary, but the masseuse was excellent. A young guy who had studied chiropractics, he expertly straddled that fine line between working out the knots and making it feel relaxing. Then there was the case of the excellent female therapists who worked their magic many moons ago in a no-frills unused cabin aboard the cozy Star Flyer and the Wind Star . Not to the say the setting isn't important, it certainly can help. Décor, ocean views, comfy waiting rooms and amenities like steam rooms with heated tile chaise lounges are all mood-setting props that can give a boost to a mediocre masseuse. Still, I must admit my absolute top cruise spa experience wasn't on a ship at all, but on a line's private island in an open-air cabana (see below). Some lines also offer in-cabin massages for the ultimate in privacy.

Here are some of the best treatments at sea.

Foot Reflexology Reflexology therapy targets pressure points in the foot that correspond to various areas of the body; who knows, you may be making your kidney or femur feel better, but mostly, the point is a state of overall relaxation. The SeaDream Yacht Club spas, for instance, offer reflexology and basic foot massages, and both can be done up on deck in a quiet corner with the sea as the backdrop.

Frangipani Conditioning Hair and Scalp Ritual Think about it, all life's tensions go straight to the top -- your head. Having it rubbed is somehow both stimulating and incredibly relaxing. Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Carnival and many other lines offer scalp massages. Some treatments include a vigorous shampoo and maybe a blow dry and style after, depends on the package.

Hot Stone Treatment This ubiquitous therapy is super popular and offered by all the cruise lines for a reason. Smooth rounded stones are heated in warm water then pushed in long deep strokes against your aching back or whatever else needs attention. Like an extension of the therapist's palm, the combination of the warmth, firm pressure and aromatic oils melts away the knots and every other care in the world.

Outdoor Cabana Massage You know what they say, location location location. Four massage cabanas on Disney's private Castaway Cay are clustered at the end of the island in the adult's-only area, steps from the private beach. The discreetly open-air huts let in the sea breezes and soothing sounds of surf and rustling palm leaves -- all of which adds greatly to the experience. Other lines offer similar set ups, including on the beach of Holland America's Half Moon Cay. Crown Princess and Emerald Princess offer outdoor cabana massages on deck.

The One-Hour Combo With kids usually in tow, time is of the essence when I'm at sea and multi-tasking is key. NCL offers a great combo called Earth, Wind & Sky that includes a neck, scalp and face massage followed by hand and foot reflexology. Ahhh, I'm jello just thinking about it. Most ship spas offer combo treatments, some as long as four to five hours. They're a great way to pamper several body parts in one shot.

Thai Massage This traditional therapy dates back thousands of years. Its main thrust is the application of stretching-like movements that promote overall flexibility and well-being; kiss tightness and tension away after one of these. The QM2's Canyon Ranch spa offers this and so do the SeaDream Yacht Club twins and the Star Clippers ships.

Swedish Massage At the end of the day, I'm a big fan of sticking with the basics. Aboard the Crystal Symphony and Silver Whisper r ecently, I enjoyed a pleasingly firm deep tissue rub as the ships swooshed through the South China Seas. Another top Swedish massage was aboard the Norwegian Sun in the Caribbean a few years back; after being lulled into lala land watching the waves from the ocean view waiting area, one of the best masseuses I've ever had applied the pressure just right. I signed up for a second.

Massage for Two Among the most memorable experiences aboard the Disney Magic in Europe last summer was a morning sequestered away in one of the ship's three spa villas. My husband and I spent a heavenly two hours first soaking in a private outdoor hot tub on the villa's balcony, then enjoying simultaneous deep tissue massages before chilling out on a chaise lounge sipping herbal tea. If it wasn't for the view of Naples (and that steep $450 price tag) grounding us to reality, we might have thought we were in paradise.

Rasul A mineral-enriched mud pack is excellent therapy for your skin, and not just your face. Rasul starts with a cleansing seaweed-soap shower and is followed by a couple applying medicinal muds to each other's bodies in a private chamber. The ritual ends with an herbal steam bath. It's definitely an intimate and healthy way to spend quality time with your partner. Celebrity and Royal Caribbean are among the lines offering it.

Salt and Ginger Body Scrub The skin is the body's largest organ and there's some 18 square feet of it to maintain. Most ship spas offer an invigorating exfoliation regime where the therapist gently applies a gritty paste (ingredients vary) that sloughs away dry, dead skin cells. Definitely opt for an exfoliation and massage combo if it's offered.

Top 10 spa treatments to get on a cruise

Top 10 spa treatments to get on a cruise

CRUISE TIPS: Cruise ship spas are a heavenly place to relax. After a spa treatment you’ll likely feel like a new person – whether it’s due to a great massage or something more instantly noticeable such as teeth whitening. Cruise ship spa services are getting more sophisticated than ever with their treatments. Here are the top 10 spa treatments to get on a cruise and some that might surprise you!

When you board your cruise on the first day, watch out for special deals such as two-for-one treatments or spa treatment packages. You’ll likely see spa staff handing out cards and flyers by the pool or at the spa, to let you know what’s available.

Book your cruise spa treatments soon since sea days and the day of formal nights are the most popular time and book up fast. Throughout your cruise also watch for special deals of the day or end-of-cruise discounts in the cruise newsletter.

Virgin voyage cruises scarlet lady tattoo parlour

One of the newest cruise ship spa treatments is getting a tattoo. Virgin Voyages made headlines when they announced their tattoo parlor called Squid Ink on their Scarlet Lady cruise ship.

To create this one-of-a-kind experience on board, Virgin Voyages teamed up with the ink industry legends from World Famous Tattoo Ink. “Tattooing is a time-honored seafaring tradition, and we’re continuing that legacy with rock and roll style by bringing some of the best ink artists to sea,” said Tom McAlpin, president and chief executive officer for Virgin Voyages. “Our sailors are looking to make lifelong memories, and we think there’s no better way to commemorate their first voyage with us than with a souvenir they’ll never lose track of.”

2. Teeth Whitening

Your smile will look great if you have your teeth whitened and this is another one of the top 10 spa treatments to get on a cruise that’s gaining popularity. Get rid of those coffee, tea and wine stains quickly and go home with a big, bright smile.

3. Foot Arch Support

Some cruise ship spa services include analyzing the way you walk – or gait – to either advise you on how to ease foot, leg or hip pain or avoid it altogether in the future. Depending on your footprint they can advise and outfit you for orthotics to support your arch or heel depending on what you need. Orthotics can be mailed to your home. You might also find you’ll shop for shoes differently from what you learned from this spa treatment.

4. Facial and Lip Fillers

Increasingly popular spa treatments to get on a cruise include injections or fillers to plump up wrinkles and smooth out fine lines. Women and men are both looking at how fillers can help make them look younger and fresher. These fillers are safe to use and your cruise ship spa staff are specially trained to do these injections and advise on after care while you’re on your cruise. You’ll go home looking younger than ever.

5. Acupuncture

Acupuncture might help you feel better for concerns ranging from easing pain to quitting smoking. Talk to the cruise ship staff about the benefits of acupuncture and what they suggest.

6. Massages and Body Wraps

World Dream cruise lavendar

As the saying goes, “Treat your body right, and it will treat you right” and massages can help. Massages on board can range from Swedish and Shiatsu, to using hot stones and crystals, or wrapping you in seaweed. The menus for massage options are getting longer every year – to enjoy by yourself or with a friend.

7. Aromatherapy and halo-therapy spaces or rooms

Norwegian cruises escape cruise ship snow room

A new evolution in spa treatments to get on a cruise include special rooms or spaces that you can enjoy such as a snow room of snow and ice to cool off in (and then jump in a hot tub or hydro pool) or a salt room to ease respiratory and skin problems. Try these spaces for either an invigorating or super-relaxing experience.

8. Hair Treatments

Hair cutting and styling are the top services at cruise ship salons that are often located inside the spa areas and are certainly not new. But what is new are the increasing options for specialty treatments such as keratin semi-permanent hair straightening. Check out what’s available since on a cruise you likely have more time for something really special.

Facials were often just a way to clear up clogged pores, but now, many different kinds of facials do many different things, depending on what you want from rejuvenating your skin to using deep anti-aging products. Choose a facial that’s combined with a massage and you might find it better value for your money.

10. Manicures and Pedicures

Virgin voyage cruises scarlet lady pedicure spa

Manicures and pedicures are the original spa treatments offered on cruises and are keeping up with the latest trends from gel applications to fancy designs. A cruise is a perfect time to get a manicure and pedicure since you’ll likely be giving your feet and hands a much-needed rest.

You’ll also look great in sandals and barefoot by the pool!

The spa uses (my personal favorite) Elemis products in their facials. This British brand has been making skincare products with natural extracts for over thirty years. In 2020, Elemis was named Best Premium Skincare Brand by The Sunday Times Style section in the UK.

Holland America’s spa offers a range of massage therapies to help dissolve that stress you’ve been carrying around and put yourself right into cruise relaxation mode.

Medi-Spa Aesthetics

The Greenhouse Spa & Salon on Holland America also offers medi-spa services. Medi-spa treatments blend a relaxing spa experience with the procedures and expertise you used to only find at your dermatologist’s office.

cruise spa tips

Since we all have different needs and desired outcomes, pricing for these specialized treatments will vary.

Cruisers can visit the spa to book a consultation and learn about pricing options for these medi-spa services:

  • Thermage Skin Tightening Treatments
  • Restylane Dermal Filler Treatments
  • DYSPORT Cosmetic Wrinkle Treatments

Acupuncture

I had my very first acupuncture appointment on a cruise ship, after Mr. SBC tried it. He’s been dealing with neck pain from arthritis for years, and booked a session of appointments on board when he saw how well it worked.

Even though I wasn’t looking forward to becoming a human pincushion, I gave it a try and realized that the needles don’t hurt at all, and acupuncture helps with both my back pain (I have scoliosis-induced arthritis) as well as my anxiety. Now we both book at least one session every time we cruise.

cruise spa tips

On Holland America, a basic 50-minute acupuncture session costs $179. But you’re also able to add on a variety of complementary treatments to your session, at a pretty reasonable cost.

If you’ve never tried acupuncture before, a lot of your session time involves lying down and relaxing while those amazing little needles work their magic. Your acupuncture therapist usually leaves you alone for most of your session, checking on you occasionally.

Adding on another service can fill in that extra time so you don’t find yourself staring at the ceiling (or falling asleep) while you wait!

The following add-on services are available with your acupuncture session on Holland America:

  • Neck and shoulder cupping – $39
  • Cellulite cupping – $39
  • Eastern nutritional consultation – $39
  • Anti-aging acupuncture facial – $39
  • Herbal consultation – $20

Tip: If you’re nervous about feeling the standard acupuncture needles, ask your practitioner to use thinner needles (often called Japanese needles).

Hair services

Although I’m a frequent traveler, I often find myself calling my home salon just days before a trip to see if my stylist can fit me in. Is it just me, or do you do the same thing?

Thankfully, The Greenhouse on Holland America ships has a full-service hair salon, where you can get anything from a trim or a blowout to highlights or even a full color.

cruise spa tips

The Greenhouse Salon offers the following hair services:

  • Color and Style Consultation – complimentary
  • Keratin Complex Express Blowout – from $169
  • Shampoo and Blowout (bundle of 3) – $129
  • Red Carpet Blowout – from $79
  • Updo Style with Blowout – from $69
  • Shampoo and Blowout – from $49
  • Keratin Complex Blowout with Cut and Style – from $199
  • Kérastase Elixir Ultime 24-Karat Indulgent Ritual – $59
  • Kérastase Fusio Dose Instant Hair Treatment – $29
  • Kérastase 123 Hair Ritual – $19
  • Highlights or Lowlights – from $149
  • Permanent Color – from $99
  • Semi-Permanent Color – from $79
  • Colorful Hair – from $49

Tip: Most Holland America cruises have two formal nights per seven-day sailing (and more for longer cruises). Book your hair service early if you want to look your best for formal night—the salon is usually super-busy on those days!

Nail services

When I’m on a cruise, I want my nails to look their best (especially my pedicure since I usually wear sandals in tropical ports).

If you live in a cold climate like I do, getting a pre-cruise pedicure means waiting for-ev-er until my toes dry before squashing my feet back into boots and hoping that I didn’t ruin the polish.

I learned my lesson the hard way, and now I skip all that worry and have my pedicure on board. You can either relax in the spa while they dry, or slip your flip-flops on and enjoy the ship!

cruise spa tips

Nail services at The Greenhouse Spa include:

  • Fire & Ice Manicure (45 min, $69)
  • Exotic Hand Ritual Manicure (45 min, $59)
  • Traditional Manicure (30 min, $49)
  • Fire & Ice Pedicure (60 min, $79)
  • Sole Delight Pedicure (60 min, $69)
  • Traditional Pedicure (45 min, $59)
  • Repolish- $29
  • Nail Fix (per nail) – $15
  • Shellac add-on – $20
  • Paraffin Wax add-on – $19

You can also save money by bundling some nail services:

  • Fire & Ice Manicure + Pedicure (105 min, $129)
  • Exotic Hand Ritual Manicure + Sole Delight Pedicure (105 min, $119)
  • Traditional Manicure + Pedicure (75 min, $99)
  • Shellac add-on for Manicure + Pedicure – $30

Tip: Many cruise lines don’t offer gel or shellac nail services, but Holland America does! I used to use acrylic tips, but I switched to shellac because it’s faster and less damaging, but still super-durable. If you still use tips, chat with your nail tech at home about switching to shellac, especially if you’ve booked a longer cruise and want your nails to look their best.

Teeth whitening

We all know that drinking coffee, tea, or red wine can discolor your teeth. If you’re like me and refuse to give up your morning coffee or glass of cabernet at dinner, whitening treatments are de rigeur unless you want your teeth to be some shade of ecru.

(Does anyone else remember this 1996 TV ad where Kindergartners shamed their teacher for having ecru-colored teeth? Prepare to feel as old as I did when I looked it up, sorry!)

cruise spa tips

Thankfully on many cruise lines including Holland America, you can whiten your smile without having to book a dentist appointment. They even offer a couples treatment option so you can save a little money and both look your best.

  • GO SMILE Teeth Whitening Treatment (30 min, $149)
  • GO SMILE Teeth Whitening Treatment for Two (30 min, $258)

Tip: Teeth whitening treatments can often cause temporary tooth sensitivity. Book your treatment closer to the end of your cruise so you can enjoy all the sweet treats and frozen drinks—and still go home with a sparkling smile!

Many cruisers are surprised by the range of waxing services that Holland America’s spa offers! When I have a full schedule of must-dos before a cruise, I can breathe easy knowing that I can still have some essential waxing done after I board.

Waxing services on Holland America include:

  • Full Leg – $85
  • Brazilian Bikini or Back – $79
  • Full Arm or Lower Leg – $55
  • Basic Bikini, Half Back, Chest, or Half Arm – $45
  • Brows, Underarms, or Stomach – $35
  • Ear, Lip, Chin, or Cheeks – $25

cruise spa tips

Tip: Although waxing services on a Holland America cruise are convenient, waxing larger areas can be painful. Try a waxing service at your home salon first before booking one on your cruise. Or try a smaller area (like your upper lip or eyebrows) to minimize pain on your vacation.

Men’s grooming

Men are always welcome to book any of the spa or salon services on Holland America. Mr. SBC usually beats me to the spa to book his favorite acupuncture and massage treatments (and I make sure he gets a pedicure because he never has time at home).

cruise spa tips

However, the spa and salon menu does have a specific section for men’s grooming, focusing on men’s haircuts, shaving, and beard care.

  • Pro-Collagen Grooming Treatment with Shave and Men’s Cut – $129
  • Pro-Collagen Grooming Treatment with Shave – $109
  • Express Shave (30 minutes) – $59
  • Men’s Cut and Style Dry – $45
  • Beard and Neck Trim – $25

Thermal suite

Savvy cruisers know that booking a pass for the spa’s Thermal Suite is an excellent investment in your well-being.

If you’re looking forward to relaxing on your cruise, the Thermal Suite is the place to be!

With a daily or weekly pass, you can soothe those weary muscles on a heated tile lounger while gazing out to sea, enjoy a steam treatment in the sauna, or take a long dip in the jetted hydro pool, filled with calming ocean water heated to body temperature.

cruise spa tips

Pricing for Holland America’s Thermal Suite can vary by ship and by sailing, but recent cruisers report that a weekly pass costs about $299 per stateroom.

Money-saving tips for HAL’s Greenhouse Spa & Salon

Spa and salon treatments can be expensive, so I like to search for discounts whenever I can. On a Holland America cruise, you can absolutely save some money off the menu prices!

HAL often offers a discount (usually up to 25% off) when you book your spa and salon treatments pre-cruise. You’ll need to book at least three days prior to embarkation, and medi-spa services and the Thermal Suite aren’t included.

However, you’ll often find discounts on a week-long Thermal Suite pass on embarkation day. Check your daily planner or visit the spa for details and pricing.

Holland America also rewards frequent cruisers with their loyalty program, Mariner Society . Once you reach Three-Star Mariner status (75+ cruise days sailed), you’ll be eligible for discounts on select spa treatments.

If you reach the ultimate loyalty level of Five-Star Mariner (500+ cruise days sailed), you’ll get one free Thermal Suite day pass on each cruise.

Have you tried any spa or salon services on a HAL cruise? What did you think of the Holland America spa or salon on your voyage? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

Does HAL have any option for a 4 handed (2 therapists) massage? Perhaps book a couples massage? I’ve heard that a 4 handed massage can be even more relaxing.

Tuesday 15th of August 2023

Hi Geoff, I've never seen an option for a four-handed massage listed in any spa menu on HAL as an official offering. My advice is to chat with the spa manager first to see if it's something they can accommodate. Your idea of booking it as a couples massage makes sense from a pricing perspective, but I wouldn't pre-book it that way and then just show up as a single person for a couple of reasons. Couples sessions are booked in a two-table room (which you won't need), and springing a "couples massage for one" on the staff might pose logistical issues for therapists expecting to each do a full service on two individuals. I'd pop in on embarkation day - the spa manager is usually around welcoming potential clients. Enjoy your cruise, and let me know if your special request works out!

On a recent cruise on Noordam I discussed a seaweed and algae cleanse, I have forgotten the name of it (and the price). I would like that information.

Hi Judy, I've never seen a seaweed and algae cleanse on HAL's spa menu, but the Firm-a-Lift facial I mentioned does use a seaweed extract. Maybe it was that, or a custom facial that your practitioner was putting together for you? I know there are several Elemis products that contain algae, so that's my guess. If any other readers have done a seaweed and algae cleanse on a Holland America ship, please chime in with any info you have!

do you know if you can change time for a booked massage on HAL

Hi Linda, I've never had an issue changing the time or date of any of my booked spa treatments. I always wait until I'm on board (I don't trust calling phone support on any cruise line to change reservations). I'd recommend stopping into the spa soon after you board so you'll have the best chance to get the day and time you want. Enjoy your cruise (and your massage!)

Our family of 10 have booked 3 Neptune suites on the Niew Amsterdam to Alaska this May. I would like to book passes for all of us for the Hydropool and Thermal suite. Is there any way to get a discount pre-cruise so I don’t have to wait until embarkment.

Monday 13th of March 2023

Hi Bonnie, you should be able to pre-book Thermal Suite passes (including the hydropool) online prior to your cruise, and they usually offer a discount. From what I remember, you'll need to do it prior to three days before sailing, and they tend to sell out early, so I'd try to book now for your cruise in May. Have an amazing time! I've never tried the Neptune suites, and I'd love to hear what you think of them. If it's your first time cruising in Alaska, be sure to check out my Alaska Cruise Packing List for helpful tips. Happy cruising!

Im going to need a haircut during my 35 day cruise on the Koningsdam, but don’t see that service on the spa price list. Will I have to find a salon on land?

Friday 17th of February 2023

Hi Maryellen, the salon does offer haircuts. I know the only cut option offered on the menu is the Keratin Complex Blowout with Cut and Style, but if you just need a regular cut and style you can ask about pricing. I've noticed that many cruise ship salons (not just on HAL) don't list haircut prices. I've been told that it's because prices can really vary with hair length, type of cut, etc. But they do offer regular haircuts. Enjoy your cruise!

Spa aficionado or newbie? Either way, the rules for cruise ship spas are a little different than those you’ll find when getting a massage or other treatment on land.

Check out our guide to cruise ship spas and the top things you should know before you go.

Bundled Discounts

Yes, you can get a better price if you book a package of treatments during your cruise vacation. Cruise ships offer tours of the spa and fitness center on the first couple of days of your sailing. Head over to chat with the staff and ask for the price list and any specials that they will be running during your cruise . You can typically get a discount on a package of treatments that significantly brings down the overall price if you were to buy them separately.

Celebrity Cruises’ Canyon Ranch Spa, for example, often features its “10 20 30” promotion that discounts 10 percent off the first treatment, 20 percent off the second and 30 percent off the third.

Of course, these types of deals work best if you were planning for a spa splurge, like getting a massage, a facial and a body treatment. So, you can book them as a package deal and get a cheaper price .

Monitor Your Spending

The tip is included already when you get your bill to sign after your treatment. It’s generally about 18 percent added to your bill, and you’ll see the amount listed if you look carefully at the slip you are asked to sign by the therapist after your session.

I’m letting you know this because some cruisers (me) have been known to double tip, making for an awkward conversation at the spa services desk when you want to get the amount adjusted.

Also, be wary that the therapists are told to recommend products to you that you will “need” to keep you looking and feeling your best. If you know that you will not be interested in buying any ointments, lotions or creams, make that clear ahead of your treatment to save yourself from the hard sell at the end.

Thermal Suite Life

The spa and fitness areas usually have a thermal suite or at least a locker room with a steam room or sauna. The newest big cruise ships go all out with their thermal suites. These are huge spaces with hot tubs, heated ceramic loungers, salt therapy, steam rooms, snow rooms, saunas and thalassotherapy pools.

They charge a cruise-long or daily admission fee, and you have to book early to ensure that you can get time in the suite. Some ships also may include time in the suites if you are also in for a massage or other treatment.

Worth mentioning: Viking Ocean Cruises includes unlimited use of their amazing  LivNordic  Spa facility as part of your cruise fare.

Also, make sure to wander into the locker room available at the fitness center, even if you don’t plan to use the gym for a workout. You just might find that there is a steam room or sauna available for passenger use at no extra charge.

Cruise Ship Spas – Not Just Massages

The spa offers much more than massages. The therapists offer hair and nail treatments, facials, wraps, teeth whitening and shaving and hair-styling services, too. You can even try medi-spa sessions such as the Ionithermie, Botox and cellulite-reduction treatments.

Snagging a Deal

The spas feature the best prices for their treatments when your cruise ship is in port. This is done as an enticement to get a little more business when passengers are more likely to be ashore on their excursions and tours. So, if you have been to a particular   p o r t   a   f e w   t i m e s   a n d   w o u l d   r a t h e r   t r e a t   y o u r s e l f   t o   a   s p a   d a y   d u r i n g   y o u r   v a c a t i o n ,   t h i s   w o u l d   b e   t h e   t i m e   t o   d o   i t .

Be sure to b ook the treatment for a time when the ship is actually docked. The discounts are in effect for the time that the ship is not sailing and not simply on every “port day.” So, once it’s anchors aweigh after 4 p.m., for example, your 5 p.m. massage will cost the regular amount.

There’s no destination on a Scandinavian cruise that’s more mysterious and enduring than St. Petersburg, Russia. An enigma of historic and religious sites and the birthplace of of some of literature’s greatest works, here you’ll explore museums housing some of the biggest and best art collections in the entire world. St. Petersburg is an intellectual city, a cultural capital where arts, music, and creativity thrive despite the bitter winters. May to July brings about the White Nights, a short time in St. Petersburg where the sky is completely lit up throughout the entire day, making late spring and early summer a prime time to visit St. Petersburg.

Make a day of museum hopping from the Hermitage Museum onto the Dostoevsky Museum, finishing the afternoon off at the Russian Museum. If church tours are more your thing, check out the ornate domes of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, or take photos of the beautiful Nikolsky Cathedral. Vodka tastings? You bet Russia’s most famous export is alive and well in St. Petersburg, too. Whatever you fancy, Russia’s cultural capital will captivate you on your St. Petersburg cruise.

With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2024, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. petersburg, hermitage museum.

There are over 350 rooms in the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, so you’ll find it impossible to see everything in the short time you have there. When you cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, come here with a plan on how to see your favorite artists and time periods on display here.

Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

Elaborate and breathtaking, this Russian Orthodox cathedral is one of the most recognizable sights in all of St. Petersburg. The mosaics and colorful domes are what the cathedral is famous for, along with it being the site of an assassination attempt of Tsar Alexander II. Beauty and Russian history collide as you explore the church.

Russian Museum

Even if you were previously uninformed about Russian art, the Russian Museum is the perfect primer for the local art scene. Spend the day perusing the museum at your leisure, then bring all sorts of art history tidbits back to the ship with you.

Peterhof Palace

This set of palaces and gardens is yet another example of St. Petersburg’s opulence. Meant to invoke a similar reaction as the Palace of Versaille, Peterhof stands up to the hype. It’s open from 9am to 7pm Sunday through Friday, and closed Mondays.

Learn More About St. Petersburg Shore Excursions

Top things to do in st. petersburg, tour the palace of rasputin’s famous murder.

The elaborate Yusupov Palace along the Moyka River was built for Russian aristocracy in the late 1700s, and it encapsulates the art and culture of Russia at the time. Don’t miss a tour through the very castle where Rasputin was assassinated. It’s a harrowing place where you’ll quickly get a taste of the wealth and status of the day.

See the Winter Palace

The Winter Palace also comprises part of the Hermitage Museum, but you could easily spend your entire time there simply walking the colorful grounds, where the palace glitters in gold and teal blue. Russian emperors lived in the Winter Palace from the 1700s until the 1900s.

Explore the Dostoevsky Museum

Famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky lived in St. Petersburg for much of his life, and the Dostoevsky Museum was erected in the apartment where he lived from 1878 to 1881. Today, you can walk in his footsteps and experience his apartment for yourself. It’s a must-see for literary types and fans of Russian literature.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Address: Nevsky Prospekt 47, St Petersburg

Classic Russian cuisine comes with a side of history at Palkin, which was also the site where famous Russians like Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, and others once sat and broke bread together. Try the fried foie gras, the salmon caviar, or the boar and venison dumplings. Adventurous, filling dishes are the name of the game here.

Address: Petropavlovskaya St., 4, St Petersburg

You might not have tried truly authentic Russian food before, but Chekov is the place to change that. Inside, you’ll feel transported back to the 19th century, though the menu is decidedly modern. Try the marinated brandy trout fillet or the chicken liver pate. Delicious dumplings, called pelmeni , are stuffed with meat and made in-house daily.

L’Europe Restaurant

Address: Mikhaylovskaya Ulitsa, д. 1/7, Saint Petersburg

Located within the Grand Hotel Europe is a fine dining experience like no other in St. Petersburg. It’s one of Russia’s oldest restaurants, which only adds to the charm of getting to spend an evening here. Sunday brunch is a favorite. Every Wednesday, dancers and performers move to the classical sounds of Tchaikovsky during the dinner service. There is a wine-pairing menu as well as an elaborate seven-course menu including dishes like duck confit, salmon tartar, red caviar, and a four-cheese tortellini.

Culture & History of the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Tsar Peter the Great founded the capital city of St. Petersburg in 1703. Ever since, St. Petersburg has become a cosmopolitan hub for arts, culture, and style. Famous authors like Nikolai Gogol and Dostoevsky were inspired and influenced by their times living in the city, which is immortalized in their literature. Though the climate was harsh and the winters almost unbearable, St. Petersburg remained a place where immigrants and visitors flocked to for hundreds of years. Today, it’s the second-largest city in Russia behind Moscow, home to a population of over 5 million people.

St. Petersburg Port Facilities & Location

When your cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia docks in port, you’ll have to quickly go through immigration before continuing on to explore everything the city has to offer. The port, called the Marine Facade, is a passenger port equipped to handle wide berths and plenty of cruise traffic.

Transportation in St. Petersburg

The metro system in St. Petersburg is comprehensive and runs daily until midnight. Otherwise, biking and taking a taxi or shuttle bus from the port into the center of town are great bets for getting around during your St. Petersburg cruise stop. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the cruise port to the city center, or around 45 minutes to get to the Hermitage Museum.

Shopping Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

You won’t be hard-pressed to find some of Russia’s enduring souvenirs, from famous nesting dolls to Russian vodka, chocolate, and other goods that tourists love to take back home with them. These souvenir shacks and stands are scattered throughout the city, making it easy to shop when you feel like it. But St. Petersburg isn’t all kitschy wares. There’s also a growing boutique shopping scene here, like the impressively large Galeria or a smattering of vintage shops selling clothes dating back to the days of the Soviet Union.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Russia is the rouble (stylized as R), and you’ll find credit and debit cards are used all over the place here. Still, it’s handy to have a little bit of cash in case you need it. ATMs are widely available, too. Tipping your taxi driver isn’t expected, but you can round up or leave behind a few R if you’re particularly happy with the service you received. At restaurants, leaving 10% is customary.
