Aguas Calientes

The town may not be a destination in its own right, but is a bustling tourism hub. Aguas Calientes is the closest town to South America’s most famous Inca ruins. Just 5.5 miles (9 km) down the mountain from Machu Picchu, you’ll visit the town at some point in your journey either in transit or during an overnight stay.

Huayna Picchu Mountain

Hike to the top of Huayna Picchu for extraordinary bird’s eye views of Machu Picchu as well as the chance to visit an extra set of ruins on the way. This is one of the most popular hiking options at Machu Picchu. Entrance tickets for Huayna Picchu are limited, so be sure to reserve yours in advance.

Machu Picchu Mountain

Another popular hiking option, Machu Picchu Mountain offers incredible panoramic views of the ruins and the surrounding Andes Mountains. Unlike Huayna Picchu, this mountain is higher. Entrance tickets to Machu Picchu Mountain are limited so be sure to reserve yours in advance.

machu picchu exhibit tour 2022

Machu Picchu Guardhouse

One of the first sites you’ll visit on your Machu Picchu tour, the Guardhouse (also known as the House of the Guardians) was once used by sentinels watching over the Sacred citadel, but nowadays it makes a great spot for sweeping panoramic photos of the ruins.

The iconic Sun Gate, also known as Inti Punku, is the entrance through which Inca Trail hikers make their grand entrance to the Machu Picchu citadel on the final day of the trek. For those who visit Machu Picchu on a day trip, this attraction can also be visited as an extra hike.

Inca Bridge

A popular additional hiking destination inside Machu Picchu, The Inca Bridge (Puente Inca) is a thin wooden plank crossing a mile-high precipice found at the end of a narrow stone pathway. Designed as a secret exit, its precarious nature helped to limit access to the citadel.

Cityneon’s exhibit “Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru” to premiere at Boca Raton Museum of Art

machu picchu exhibit tour 2022

This fall, South Floridians and tourists from across the globe will discover a culture that thrived in a mythical world thousands of years ago.  World Heritage Exhibitions  has announced the world premiere of  Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru , opening on October 16, 2021. The first stop of a worldwide tour will take place at the  Boca Raton Museum of Art .  Cityneon  presents the exhibition with support from the Government of Peru, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, and in partnership with Inkaterra Asociacion. The artifacts in the exhibition are on loan from Museo Larco in Lima, Peru, and Museo de Sitio Manuel Chávez Ballón in Aguas Calientes, Peru.

The world-premiere announcement provided authentic Andean entertainment throughout the Boca Raton Museum of Art featuring Miami-based Peruvian artists, including Peruvian music by Kuyayky, artwork by Roberto Carlos Olivia Hernandez, and ceramics by Polo Ramirez. Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer and Visit Florida Regional Partnership Manager Lindsey Norris were on-site to welcome representatives of the exhibition and partner institutions. In addition, a welcoming video statement from Florida Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee was presented. PromPeru, the Peruvian tourism bureau, supported the announcement event.

“It is an honor to be the home of the world premiere of Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru and a privilege to work with such esteemed partners to bring this exhibition to our community,” expressed Irvin Lippman, Executive Director of the Boca Raton Museum of Art. “Today is a landmark day for our institution and marks our continued success in presenting compelling exhibitions that celebrate the visual history of world civilizations. We look forward to introducing the wonders of Machu Picchu and the power and beauty of the Inca civilization in what promises to be a most memorable exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.”

machu picchu exhibit tour 2022

Featuring the largest Andean gold collection ever to travel the world, this new museum experience highlights a selection of 192 artifacts from royal tombs, including objects that belonged to noble Andean lords, many never-before-seen out of Peru. One of the exhibition’s highlights is a fully intact gold attire of a Chimú Emperor that dates to 1300 AD.

“It’s enthralling for Cityneon to have the opportunity to present to new audiences these remarkable pieces of rare Andean artifacts. Cityneon’s strong track record of staging immersive experiences globally with record-breaking visitor numbers reflects our strength in delivering high-quality experiences to visitors from around the world. Through this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to come face-to-face with history in a way that has never been done before,” said Executive Chairman & Group Chief Executive Officer of Cityneon, Ron Tan. “Guests are going to be thrilled to encounter the ancient cultures who lived in this city 7,000 feet above sea level in the Andes Mountains.”

Rivaled only by Ancient Egypt in longevity and by the Roman Empire in engineering, Andean societies dominated a substantial segment of South America for over 3,000 years straight through the reign of the Incan Empire. Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru will showcase Peruvian culture’s rich histories and traditions to the public like never before.

“South Florida, known as the ‘Gateway to Latin America,’ is the ideal location to host this world premiere, and having the opportunity to present this exhibition at the Boca Raton Museum of Art is truly a pleasure,” described President and Chairman of World Heritage Exhibitions, Anthony Tann. “This exhibition is exciting and engaging, and thus, we expect Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru to be the largest cultural attraction throughout the region this fall.”

During their visit to the exhibition, guests are taken to the mysterious city in the sky, built and abandoned within a century. They will continue on a journey through the vast expanse of Andean history, traveling alongside the mythical hero Ai Apaec, and discovering the mysteries of Andean cosmology.

“Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru showcases the extraordinary and rich history of ancient Peru. It brings to life the various cultures that have lived in the land of the Incas and Machu Picchu over an astounding 3,000 years,” stated President of Museo Larco, Andres Alvarez-Calderon.

Due to the current global pandemic, the need for social distancing, and other measures to prevent the coronavirus spread, the number of visitors allowed to visit Machu Picchu yearly has dipped to 250,000. This exhibition expands the ability to experience Machu Picchu to the world. Here, the first-ever virtual reality experience of Machu Picchu will be unveiled, allowing guests a window into the unrivaled beauty and flourishing landscape.

“Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru will allow the stories and riches of Andean civilizations to travel the world,” said Inkaterra Asociacion founder, Joe Koechlin. “We could not

be more delighted about sharing our history and culture with the people of South Florida and beyond.”

Beginning on October 16, 2021, at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru will start its limited run in South Florida before leaving the U.S. and embarking on a multi-country, worldwide tour. The state-of-the-art exhibition will encompass the entire museum, including all galleries on both floors. Exhibition ticket prices start at $19.95. Tickets will go on sale later this summer. Today, an online registration process to pre-register for tickets has opened. Those who pre-register will have early access to tickets when they go on sale to the public. For the opportunity to register to pre-purchase tickets,

Machu Picchu Tours & Treks

Clouds rising above the mountains behind. the ruins of Machu Picchu, in Peru

As the mist lifts off the mountains and over the Inca ruins, Machu Picchu evokes an otherworldly feeling

It’s one of the world’s most incredible archaeological sites, with a breathtaking location to match. With all that Machu Picchu has to offer, it’s easy to understand why so many are drawn to the visitor heartland of Peru . The ultimate decision is how to get there. Choose a trek or take the train? You could hike through cloud forests along the classic Inca Trail, fulfill your Andes experience on the Quarry Trail or challenge yourself on the Choquequirao trek – it's up to you. We don’t need to tell you why the adventure is worth your while. Our local leaders will keep you safe, informed and inspired every step of the way.

Our Machu Picchu trips

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Machu Picchu highlights

Which route is right for you.

With its spectacular natural scenery and profound cultural encounters, the Inca Trail is an international beacon for trekking. Attracting thousands of hikers each year, it's a challenging yet rewarding hike that stays with you for a lifetime. Although rated moderate, the relentless uphill (and downhill) hiking is tough - the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy it.

For an impressive hike off the beaten path, consider the Inca Quarry Trail. This lesser-known trek offers the same magical scenery of the Andes mountains, passing through local villages and visiting three smaller archaeological sites the other trails don’t. Another bonus is that the hike doesn’t require a permit – so once you book, you’re set.

Take your boots further with a challenging eight-day hike moving through high-altitude cloud forests, over mega mountain passes and along an ancient trail leading to the well-preserved Inca city ruins of Choquequirao. This trail might be secluded and not for the faint-hearted but it's also one adventure you'll never forget, and that's a promise.

Meet our team

Machu Picchu travel FAQs

What is machu picchu.

Machu Picchu is a magnificent reminder of the power and ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

The ancient citadel, built in the 15th century, was abandoned only 100 years later, and many mysteries remain.

Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site in 1983 and announced as one of the Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, Machu Picchu makes a lasting impression.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Overlooking the Urubamba River, the site of Machu Picchu sits above the Sacred Valley – located in the Cusco region of Peru.

How can I get to Machu Picchu?

Many travellers fly into the capital of Cusco before taking the train or choosing a hiking tour. The stepping stone to Machu Picchu is Ollantaytambo, about 1.5 hours away from Cusco by bus.

From Ollantaytambo, the most common ways to get to Machu Picchu are:

  • Hiking the Inca Trail (one way to Machu Picchu)
  • Taking the equally scenic and rewarding Quarry Trail
  • Trekking the challenging 8-day Choquequirao Trail

Can I still hike if I take the train?

So, you want to experience the Inca Trail but aren't quite up for the entire hike?

The one-day option takes you by train part of the way where you hop off and trek the trade highway of the ancient Inca empire.

You will arrive at the Sun Gate in the afternoon to take in the views of Machu Picchu.

Is hiking the only way to get to Machu Picchu?

On all of our trips that visit Machu Picchu, you can choose the rail journey instead of the hike – simply specify while booking that you’d prefer the train option. There's no extra cost for this, though please note fees may apply if you decide to change to the train option after your Inca Trail permit has already been purchased.

Learn more about taking the train to Machu Picchu

When is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?

You can visit Machu Picchu all year round.  The most popular time, and therefore the most crowded, is in June and July.

Low cloud cover during the dry season from April to October also means cold nights on hiking trails, so you'll need thermals for a good night’s sleep.

The wet season is from November to March. Temperatures rise and the region receives heavy rainfall, so waterproofs are essential if you're hiking. If you don't mind a bit of rain, the plus side is that crowds are smaller. If you want to hike the Inca Trail, note that it closes every year in February for maintenance.

Can you get to Machu Picchu in a day?

Yes, you can. Starting with an early rise in the morning, take a 1.5-hour bus ride to Ollantaytambo, then a 2.5-hour train to Aguas Calientes, followed by a 30-minute bus to Machu Picchu.

You will have a couple of hours to visit Machu Picchu and then return to Cusco the same way.

None of our trips visit Machu Picchu this way, as we believe it doesn’t allow enough time to explore (and really enjoy) the site and the Sacred Valley area.

How high is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found deep in the cloud forest at 2440 m (7972 ft) above sea level, sitting at 1000 m (3280 ft) lower than Cusco.

What does this mean for you? In terms of altitude, you're unlikely to experience any altitude issues at Machu Picchu itself.

But be aware, trekking to Machu Picchu involves walking up and down several steep stairs, ramps and terraces at various altitudes, which can be strenuous.

Will the altitude affect me?

Most people start to feel the effects of altitude at over 2000 m (6561 ft) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the causes and effects of traveling at altitude. Monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly.

It is essential to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader immediately if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have health concerns before the trip, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking any medication.

Do I need a permit to hike to Machu Picchu?

Everyone hiking to Machu Picchu via the iconic Inca Trail or the shorter Inca Trail Express requires a permit. You don't need a permit to trek via the Quarry or Choquequirao trails.

If you do the Inca Trail with Intrepid, our adventure consultants secure your permit for you so you can focus on getting excited – just make sure you have your passport details handy at the time of booking.

Permits are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so booking well in advance is critical.

We endeavor to purchase your permit within two working days of receiving all necessary information.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

For a day trip exploring Machu Picchu, we recommended taking a small backpack with the essentials: sunscreen, hat, water bottle (filled before departing), a few snacks and mosquito repellent. It helps to wear breathable pants, a long shirt and a waterproof jacket – since the UV index is higher in the Andes and the site is prone to rainfall.

If you plan to trek before visiting Machu Picchu, read our detailed packing instructions in your Essential Trip Information.

What is Wayna Picchu?

Wayna Picchu (also known also as Huayna Pichu or Wayna Pikchu) means ‘young peak’ in Quechua – although the mountain appears anything but young, towering behind Machu Picchu.

Known as the ‘stairs of death’, the hair-raising climb takes about three hours to return. More recently, a cap of 400 people a day has been introduced on the number of visitors allowed to climb.

Can I climb Wayna Picchu with Intrepid Travel?

We have performed risk assessments on all our optional activities, and unfortunately, we don't consider climbing Wayna Picchu a safe activity at this stage.

Reaching Wayna Picchu involves climbing steep, narrow and exposed sets of stairs, and we just can't guarantee your safety.

Our leaders are specifically prohibited from assisting you in visiting Wayna Picchu.

What are the toilet facilities like at Machu Picchu?

There are public toilets located at the main entrance of Machu Picchu and none after entering the site – so make sure you time your stop before heading off to explore.

Take some coins with you as there is a small fee to use the toilet facilities.

What does the Rainforest Alliance tick of approval mean?

The Rainforest Alliance is a non-profit organization. It is working to build strong forests, healthy agricultural landscapes and thriving communities.

The green frog seal shows that an enterprise has been audited to meet environmental, social, and economic sustainability standards.

The Rainforest Alliance recognizes Intrepid as one of Peru's top certified tourism businesses.

Can I visit Machu Picchu if I have a disability?

Yes, but of course it will depend on your level of disability, fitness and what support will be available to you.

People who are visually impaired have completed the Inca Trail (with the right support crew, of course).

Contact us to discuss your particular circumstances and we can assess it from there.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Things To Do in Peru | Peru Travel Guide

UPDATED FEBRUARY 2020

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1 . what language do they speak at machu picchu.

Spanish is the official language of Peru, spoken by more than 80% of the population. There are also many indigenous languages including Quechua and Aymara. In recent years an increased effort has been made to promote all of the indigenous languages.

2 . Do I need to get vaccinations for visiting Machu Picchu?

Although no specific vaccinations are required for Peru travel and no proof of any vaccination is required to enter Peru, we recommend that you visit your doctor or a traveller’s medical centre for current information specific to those places that you will be travelling through. As a general guide we recommend the following:

• Yellow Fever - Especially for jungle areas

• Hepatitis - Both A and B (twinrix)

• Diphtheria

3 . Do I need to be fit to go to Machu Picchu?

The level of fitness needed will depend on how you are planning to visit Machu Picchu. If you are travelling to Machu Picchu by train, then you do not need to be fit. Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude than Cusco, so you will be well acclimatised before you embark on your train journey.

If you are planning to trek to Machu Picchu, then a reasonable level of fitness is advised and the fitter you are the easier you will find the trek, and the more you will probably enjoy it. It is also recommended that you spend at least 2 days acclimatising in Cusco before your trek to try to prevent altitude sickness whilst on the trail. This is especially important if you have arrived from sea level, for example from Lima. Cusco lies at 3,400m and the highest point of the Inca Trail is at 4,200m.

4 . What should I pack when visiting Machu Picchu?

This will depend on whether you are travelling to Machu Picchu by train or trekking along the Inca Trail or one of the other trails. If travelling by train you will need only a day pack with items such as camera, water bottle, sunscreen, sun hat and sunglasses, change of clothes if staying overnight, rain jacket and fleece jacket, passport and small amount of money.

If you are trekking, then you will need to pack accordingly and be prepared for extremes of climate from freezing to hot. We recommend the following:

• Daypack & rain cover

• A soft trek bag

• Sleeping bag (-5°C) (if not provided)

• Rain jacket & waterproof trousers

• Walking boots

• Complete change of clothing

• Socks/underwear/thermal underwear

• Trekking trousers or zip-off shorts

• After trekking trousers/shirt/sandals

• Warm layers (e.g. fleeces and/or lined jacket)

• Gloves, scarf and wool/fleece hat

• Water bottle and sterilising tablets

• Flashlight/torch & spare batteries

• Broad-brim or peaked cap

• Sun block & lip balm

• Sunglasses

• Insect repellent

• Toiletries, toilet paper & small towel

• Selection of small snacks such as chocolates, dried fruit, biscuits, etc.

• Camera (in plastic bag or dry-sack) with spare memory cards, batteries

• Cash (for minor purchases on trek, tips, souvenirs, lunch in Aguas Calientes etc.)

• Money belt

• Trekking poles (optional) – must be rubber tipped

• Personal First Aid Kit to include painkillers, plasters (Band-Aids), moleskin, antiseptic cream, after-bite, anti-diarrhoea tablets, throat lozenges, re-hydration salts & personal medication

5 . Is it safe to travel to Machu Picchu?

In general it is safe to travel to Machu Picchu and there are not the same issues as might be found in larger cities, where you need to be much more vigilant. Train stations can be crowded so be aware of pickpockets. As with travel throughout Peru we recommend the following to minimise security risks:

• do not show any outward signs of wealth or wear expensive jewellery

• keep your valuables in your hotel in safety deposit boxes

• keep any valuables that you must carry with you hidden, as pickpockets can be present in crowded areas and around tourist areas

• use only registered taxis with official identification

• avoid going on your own to remote areas/ruins where tourists would not be expected to go

• always keep your day pack and camera close to you and never leave them unattended.

6 . Do I need a visa to travel to Machu Picchu?

A pre-arranged visa is not required to enter Peru for citizens of the following countries:

• Australia

• United Kingdom

• The United States

• New Zealand

• European Union

• South Africa

For other nationalities please visit the website of the relevant consulate.

7 . How long do I need to travel to Machu Picchu?

Again this depends on how you plan to visit Machu Picchu. It is possible to visit Machu Picchu in a day by train from Cusco, or an overnight trip can be organised with accommodation in Aguas Calientes or even closer to Machu Picchu. If you plan to trek in, there are a range of treks available from 4 days to 7 days.

8 . Do you need a permit to climb Huayma Picchu?

There is an entry fee for anyone wanting to trek up Huayna Picchu and permits need to be secured in advance. The number of daily visitors allowed to enter Huayna Picchu is restricted to 400 and permits are on a first come first served basis. Please ensure that you advise us at the time of making your Peru booking if you would like to hike this mountain.

9 . How high is Machu Picchu and what is the highest point on the various trails to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is located at 2,430m. The highest point of the Inca Trail is 4,215m at the top of Dead Woman’s Pass; the highest point on the Salkantay Trek is at 4,600m and on the Lares Trek it is 4,550m.

10 . What money do they use at Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is one of Peru’s must-see highlights. The unit of currency in Peru is the Peruvian Nuevo Sol (PEN). The US Dollar is widely accepted throughout the country and prices are often given in both US dollars and Soles. Please check websites such as www.oanda.com or www.xe.com for up to date exchange rates prior to your departure.

11 . How much should I budget for daily in Machu Picchu?

Generally transport, entrance fees and guides will already be included in your tour price and so you will only need a small amount of money to cover meals, tips to guides and souvenirs.

'Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru' exhibition to make world premiere in Boca

The world tour exhibition "Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru" is coming to the Boca Raton Museum of Art in October.

BOCA RATON — The traveling exhibition “Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru” will make its world premiere this fall at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

The bilingual exhibition, announced in May at the museum, will feature "the most impressive" Andean gold collection ever to travel the world. The gold attire of a Chimú emperor that dates to 1300 AD is among the exhibition's highlights.

“Machu Picchu remains an enduring symbol of the great Incan empire, but it is merely one legacy of the dozens of advanced societies that flourished in ancient Peru for more than 3,000 years. The rich history of the Andean cultures has left behind priceless treasures of great importance,” said Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer.

"It's really incredible to see what started as a dream come to life," said Andrés Álvarez Calderón, president of Museo Larco.

The exhibition, which will make the first stop of its international tour on Oct. 16, will encompass the entire museum. During their visit to the exhibition, at one of the immersive galleries, guests will be "above the clouds of the Andes mountains, looking down at Machu Picchu," said Anthony Tann, president and chairman of World Heritage Exhibitions.

With the exhibition set to debut in South Florida, often called the "Gateway to Latin America," it is expected to have many benefits for travel and tourism.

In 2019, more than 65% of visitors to the state took part in at least one cultural activity, said Lindsey Norris, the regional partnership manager of Visit Florida. Further, 1 in 10 visited historic sites, museums, cultural spaces and art galleries.

Deeming art and culture "big business" in Florida, Norris pointed out that an overnight visitor who went to a museum or art exhibition spent an average of $26 more per day than a general visitor.

Tickets for the Machu Picchu exhibit to go on sale this summer

Machu Picchu is the site of an ancient Inca city discovered in 1911 on a mountain northwest of Cuzco in southeastern Peru.

The culture-rich exhibition, which will take guests “to the mysterious city in the sky,” is expected to attract many tourists and area residents.

"When you go to Machu Picchu, you are in awe of what man-made and you are in awe of what nature provides," said José Koechlin, founder of Inkaterra Asociación.

Embark on a journey through time and discover a culture that thrived in a mythic world. Explore the world premiere exhibition, Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru! Behold the marvels of engineering that sheltered a truly spiritual civilization and the ornate riches they once cherished.

This all-new, immersive museum experience will transport you to the jewel of the only cradle of civilization in the Southern Hemisphere, the Incan city of Machu Picchu. You will walk among a stunning selection of 192 artifacts from royal tombs that include spectacular objects that belonged to noble Andean lords. Here you will plunge into the Amazon rainforest and come face-to-face with one of the most impressive collections of gold treasures to ever tour the world.

Rivaled only by Ancient Egypt in longevity and by the Roman Empire in engineering, Andean societies dominated a substantial segment of South America for over 3,000 years. Nestled in a cloud forest, this great Inca Empire's enduring symbol of architectural prowess is protected by twin sacred mountains and is invisible from below. Further adding to its unrivaled beauty, the flourishing landscape of Machu Picchu has restored much of the original biodiversity that it enjoyed in Incan times through a recent reforestation initiative. In this dramatically staged expedition, the sounds of roaring jaguars, screaming macaws, and torrential rainfall are all around you as you unravel the mysteries of Andean cosmology and marvel at the sophistication of Andean artists.

Guided by Ai Apaec, a mythical Andean hero, visitors will gain a window into transformation through the forces of nature that result in his death and subsequent rebirth. In this world, nothing is fixed and beings can change from one form to another. Dive into this magical universe in Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru.

This world premiere exhibition opens in a limited run at the Boca Raton Museum of Art on October 16, 2021 before embarking on a multi-country, world-wide tour.

Machu Picchu Exhibit Opens

The new “Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru” traveling exhibit recently made its debut at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Featuring nearly 200 artifacts from over 5,000 years of ancient Andean culture, the exhibit offers visitors a chance to travel back in time to a civilization of spiritual and technical marvels.

World Heritage Exhibitions brought in Cortina Productions to design and produce nine immersive video experiences for the exhibition. Utilizing animation, layered projections, and dramatic storytelling the ancient world comes to life, wowing visitors of all ages.

The Intro Theater Film welcomes visitors into the exhibit space while transporting them into Machu Picchu. Sounds from the Cloud Forest surround visitors as footage of the landscape and animals fills the theater. The Intro film provides an overview of the lives, beliefs, and artistry of ancient Andean societies told through rare objects, symbolic animals, and sacred lands that visitors will encounter throughout the exhibition.

After exiting the Intro Theater, visitors are welcomed into the Cloud Forest immersive environment, which beautifully displays the biodiversity of Machu Picchu. Animated projections weave amongst scenic elements, offering visitors a glimpse of the surreal and magical sacred site. Sounds of jaguars, birds, insects, snakes, and water flowing combined with views of mountains and ruins allow visitors to imagine themselves in a different place and time, bringing them deeper into the immersive experience of the exhibits.

The Andean World exhibit teaches visitors about the ancient culture by bringing objects and figures to life through projection mapping techniques, special effects, and original animations. The exhibit speaks to the magical qualities of Andean shamans as they take on animal powers to travel between worlds and offers visitors an exciting look at the mystical culture.

The Sacrifice Object Theater provides a dramatic telling of the importance of human sacrifice for Andean peoples to appease the gods. Andean artwork is animated across three large screens, while synchronized lighting effects identify objects that were used in ritual sacrifice.

To provide visitors with a view of today’s Machu Picchu site, Cortina Productions created two films that feature spectacular aerial footage of the ruins as well as radar imagery using LIDAR technology to show the impressive engineering feats of the Incas. By giving visitors an understanding of both the ancient society and modern day views of the area, the “Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru” exhibit aims to provide a comprehensive look at the over 5,000-year history of this fascinating empire.

The exhibit is open at the Boca Raton Museum of Art until the Spring of 2022 and then will tour internationally. For more information, please visit https://bocamuseum.org/art/machu-picchu-and-golden-empires-peru

Matador Original Series

Want to see machu picchu next year buy a permit before they sell out.

T here are multiple hiking trails that lead to the ancient city of Machu Picchu: the Ancascocha Trail , the Salkantay Trail, the Lares Trek, etc. But the most popular of them all is the Inca Trail, and to hike it, you need a permit.

The Inca Trail is the traditional path that the Incas used to reach Machu Picchu in the 15th century, and it is the only route that will have you arrive directly to the Incan ruins on foot without having to take a train or bus in between.

To preserve the historical route and to prevent overcrowding, the Inca Trail is highly regulated: Travelers need a permit and be accompanied by a licensed guide to access it and trek all the way to Machu Picchu.

The 2025 permits to hike the Inca Trail will be available for purchase on October 1, 2024, and are expected to sell out fast.

“Travelers wishing to hike the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu should be aware that permits are limited to 500 people per day. Of these, approximately 300 are allocated for porters and guides, leaving only 200 permits available for travelers,” locally owned and operated tour operator Alpaca Expeditions says in an email.

The Inca Trail is closed in February due to extremely wet weather conditions and maintenance, but it is otherwise open every day throughout the remaining 11 months of the year. May, June, July, and August are considered the peak season, when the trail and the ruins tend to be busier. Naturally, getting a permit for those months can be difficult if your trip isn’t planned well in advance. While the rainy season in the Peruvian Andes starts in November and ends mid-March, Miguel Angel Gongora Meza, director and cofounder of tour operator Evolution Treks Peru , recommends travelers who are not afraid of wet weather to plan a trip from March to May, and from September to mid-December when the crowds are much thinner.

The classic Inca Trail is a challenging four-day, three-night hike that starts in the city of Cusco, covers 26 miles, and involves 1574 feet of elevation. However, tour operators tend to offer shorter and longer versions of the Inca trail, including two-day, five-day, and seven-day treks for those who either want a less strenuous or more arduous experience.

Before you select a tour operator for your Inca trail adventure, make sure to look into how they treat their workers. Some tour operators have been known to exploit their porters, forcing them to carry more than the maximum weight allowed, and not providing them with decent meals or sleeping conditions while on the trail. Take the time to watch the movie “ KM 82 ” which highlights those issues.
