Northern Lights

Cruise in the heart of the Northern Lights belt

From the Lofoten Islands to the North Cape , the coast of Northern Norway is covered by a belt of aurora borealis. This makes Northern Norway an ideal location to witness this occurrence. In fact, this is the best place on Earth to watch the Northern Lights. You can view the Northern Lights during the day in the middle of winter on Svalbard (Spitsbergen), which lies a little further from this belt. The coasts of the Norwegian counties of Tromso and Finnmark have the highest occurrence due to their proximity to the Arctic Circle and relatively warm winter climate, making northern Norway an appealing destination for anyone interested in seeing this meteorological phenomenon.

What are the Northern Lights?

The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, begin their lives on the sun. After severe solar storms, the sun’s surface is showered with electrically charged particles. There are several that head in Earth’s direction. When they do, they are guided to the North and South Poles by the planet’s magnetic fields. The particles hit the upper atmosphere in a ring pattern that revolves around the magnetic poles. Energy is released as light that we can see from Earth in a process that is comparable to what happens inside a fluorescent lamp. The average altitude at which the Northern Lights can be seen is about 100 kilometers.

Where can you see the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, as the name implies, are particularly associated with the arctic regions. The zone with the highest concentration of these events is a 2500 km-wide ring that centers on the magnetic north pole. The so-called auroral zone encompasses much of the northern hemisphere, beginning in the Arctic and extending southward across northern Scandinavia, the island of Iceland, the southern tip of Greenland, and on into northern Canada, Alaska, and the northern coast of Siberia.

Things to do on a cruise in Norway

A Havila or Hurtigruten cruise calls at 34 ports of call on its route between Bergen and Kirkenes. So you’ll have plenty to keep you entertained during the daytime before prime northern lights viewing hours at night. With a cruise holiday along the fjord-studded Norwegian coast you can choose from numerous guided shore excursions, such as short husky safaris and fishing village tours.

You can also explore charming coastal cities like Ålesund on your own during port calls or simply relax and enjoy the comfortable amenities on board your cruise ship.

Want to experience more fjords on your northern lights cruise in Norway? We recommend taking a Norway in a Nutshell® train journey from Oslo to the colourful city of Bergen , the southernmost port. This journey includes a ride on a famous Flåm Railway , with breathtaking mountain and fjord views on the way to the west coast.

Want to stay in an ice hotel during your Norway cruise holiday? Nordic Visitor can tailor your Norway cruise itinerary to include a stay at the Snow Hotel in Kirkenes , Hurtigruten and Havila's northern hub.

When to see the northern lights in Norway

The winter season in Norway is the best time to view the northern lights . Because nighttime darkness is required for seeing this dazzling natural light show, you should visit Norway between October and March for optimal chances of aurora borealis sightings. Coincidentally, travelling outside of the busy summer season may also result in better cruise deals!

Where to see the northern lights in Norway

The further north you go in the northern hemisphere, the better for seeing the northern lights. Because the aurora borealis are magnetically drawn towards the north pole, the areas north of the Arctic Circle are best for northern lights viewing.

Some of the ports of call in Norway’s arctic region include the Lofoten Islands , Tromsø and North Cape (Nordkapp) - all places that are located within the so-called “northern lights belt”, an area known to have more auroral frequency and intensity.

If you wish to experience snow activities, such as dog sledding, it’s best to plan your winter northern lights break in Norway between December to April. Nordic Visitor can assist in your trip planning and tailor a tour package to your interests.

Glad that we chose Nordic Visitor

Overall it was an amazing journey, we have enjoyed every step of it. We thank you for flawless instructions and all useful information which made our trip a convenient one as well. Thanks a lot for all your efforts. We are glad that we have chosen Nordic Visitor for this trip and surely will recommend to our friends and family.

Wonderful experience

Our experience in Norway was wonderful. Our hotels were centrally located, clean and offered great breakfasts to start each day. Our transportation connections couldn't have gone any smoother and the scenery from the train into Flåm and boat through the fiords was spectacular! All three of us felt this was an amazing experience.

I couldn't have planned a better trip to Norway on my own. We loved the structure and assurance of the itinerary while having the flexibility to explore on our own. Travelling in January, Nordic Visitor's emergency number gave us peace of mind in case of bad weather. The hotels were excellent and the locations were very convenient to public transportation and places we wanted to visit. The excursions were fantastic. Want a stress-free adventure? Let Nordic Visitor lead the way.

We had an amazing time in Norway!

We had an amazing time in Norway! The people could not have been friendlier, the vistas were breathtaking, and our Nordic Visitor helper, Irja, went above and beyond to help us plan our stay and even changed some reservations for us at the last minute when I realised that I had made a mistake. We would absolutely come back to Norway with Nordic Visitor again.

The trip was perfect

I took my mum to Norway for her 60th birthday in the hopes of seeing the northern lights. The trip planned for us by Nordic Visitor was perfect. We were glad of the days we got to spend exploring Tromsø and the excursions that were included allowed us to make some truly amazing memories. The snowmobile tour was the highlight of the trip, truly thrilling and topped off by seeing the lights as we arrived back to the camp. All the people who led our excursions were friendly and really knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend the Nordic Visitor service as a way to pack a lot of unforgettable experiences into a short time.

The perfect honeymoon

We couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon! We knew we wanted to visit Norway for our honeymoon but were overwhelmed with planning the trip on our own. Finding Nordic Visitor and working with Jemima was a godsend! Jemima helped plan us the perfect honeymoon with ease. Our trip was the perfect amount of planned activities and downtime/time to explore at our leisure. Travelling around Norway was a breeze with the help of Nordic Visitor and we cannot recommend the tours Nordic Visitor has to offer enough. We hope to use Nordic Visitor again on our next European excursion! Each hotel we stayed in was comfortable and spacious. All hotels had great breakfast buffets and were all centrally located in the areas we were visiting. We added a food and cultural tour in Bergen which was great! The food was delicious and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly! We enjoyed our time wandering the streets of Bergen and learning about the history and what everyday life is like. All the Northern Lights tours were fantastic! All the guides were knowledgeable and fun to talk with. Our airport transfer in Bergen was very easy and took a lot of stress off of us after a delayed flight.

Nordic Visitor did a great job with set up for accommodation and travel within the country. Tour guides were friendly, helpful and informative. I liked the way it was set up to visit popular destinations/excursions but also allowed time to explore on your own.

One of the best experiences we have had!

Absolutely outstanding. The tour and excursion organisation was perfect, seamlessly executed. The agent, Sindre, very professional in recommending and adapting the tour to our needs. One of the best family travel experiences we have had!

I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again

It was very easy to book via Nordic Visitor, the website is easy to use and communication with my appointed rep was excellent. They planned everything, the accommodation was beautiful, easy location for the other entertainment, all documents were sent to me in good time. I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again to book my future tours.

A true winter wonderland!

This was absolutely the trip of a lifetime. We enjoyed seeing a true winter wonderland! The combination of beautiful fjord views from the boat, chasing the northern lights, dog sledding, the Snow Hotel, so many different experiences - there were a lot of beautiful moments to take in!

Absolutely superb hotels were selected. The itinerary was very clearly laid out and easily understood. Every excursion or extra activity was expecting us. We had no issues with the vouchers. We definitely feel we experienced the best of Tromsø. Great communication when excursions were cancelled because of weather conditions. Nordic Visitor was able to reschedule us on a different excursion quickly and easily. Local tours selected by Nordic Visitor were excellent, well run and definitely highlights of the trip.

Perfectly planned

The tour was well organised. Everything was perfectly planned, from the tours to the transfers to the hotels. Suggestions on what to do/see/eat were also brilliant. The detailed guide made it very easy to find out where to go and how. The hotels were conveniently located in the city centre and close to transport links. The optional tours suggested were also perfect.

Tromsø – one of the world’s best places to see the Northern Lights

Tromsø is perfect for chasing this fascinating natural phenomenon. In part, that is because the Arctic city is in the middle of the Aurora Borealis oval that surrounds the Earth. It is also slightly warmer than other Arctic cities. The months of October through March are the best times for spotting the lights in Norway. Tromsø’s ideal location increases the odds of a Northern Lights display even during periods of low Aurora Borealis activity.

Morning at leisure, before departing for todays highlight, a husky safari. A 2.5-hour program with 2.5-mile husky cart tour or 45-minute reindeer sleigh tour.

Afterwards there will be time to mingle with the dogs, have a snack with juice and cookies around the fire. When there is enough snow to use sleds the program changes into 45-minute safari with a sled. The schedule of the program will stay the same, either 2.5 miles with a cart or 45 minutes with the sled depending on the snow situation.

Prepare for some amazing scenery as we sail through the world-famous islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen . Lofoten is known for its natural beauty, steep mountains, wilderness and picturesque fishing villages. After a short stop at the tiny village of Risøyhamn, we continue to Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten began more than 125 years ago.

Continuing south, it will look like we’re headed straight into a mountain, but don’t worry, we are in fact sailing through a passage into the narrow Raftsund, flanked by peaks rising 1000m out of the sea. If that wasn't enough, we arrive at the amazing Trollfjord . If conditions allow, we will sail between sheer cliffs that seem close enough to reach out and touch. It’s an unforgettable experience!

The Arctic Circle monument in winter

Cross the Arctic Circle

We then cross over the  Arctic Circle  just after breakfast. Commemorate the moment with a tradition of tasting a spoonful of good ol’ cod liver oil!

Sailing along the Helgeland coast , you see the strange mountain, Torghatten, famous for the distinctive hole through its center. There is a local legend as to why and how this mountain came to have such a hole. Make sure you ask your Coastal Expert about it!

Another highlight is sailing past the Seven Sisters mountain range. It is easy to see how the peaks influenced ancient legends. The story goes that seven beautiful troll sisters were caught out at sunrise and turned to stone, thus creating the seven beautiful mountaintops.

Even though we’re south of the Arctic Circle, there may still be good opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

The river Nid in front of the Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, Norway on a nice winter day.

Rich History and Living Culture

Today you have a chance to explore the wooden city of history: Trondheim . Be sure to visit the majestic Nidaros Cathedral, built over the burial site of King Olav II who reigned from 1015 to 1028. Treat yourself to quality coffee and a Nordic patisserie in one of the Bakklandet district’s many chic cafés then walk up to Kristiansten Fort for great views of Norway’s third-largest city.

As we sail along the coast, you will realize the importance of fishing to Norway’s coastal communities. Kristiansund is regarded as Norway’s ‘dried cod capital’ because of its long-time export of salted dry fish. An interesting excursion is to the Bergtatt marble mine, which takes you inside a mountain and across an illuminated subterranean lake before serving you a meal in the mine´s ‘Grand Hall’.

White Christmas in the area of the UNESCO listed Bryggen in Bergen, Norway.

A Fjord Farewell

During the night, the ship calls at Ålesund , Torvik and Målø y, as our voyage draws to a close. Before docking in Bergen, there is fascinating scenery to experience, including picturesque Nordfjord beneath Jostedal Glacier.

A few nautical miles south of Florø , we cross the mouth of the mighty Sognefjord, taking in superb views of the magnificent island-studded coastline en route. In the early afternoon, we arrive in the Hanseatic city of Bergen where our time on the Coastal Express comes to an end. After disembarkation we join our private coach for a city tour including a walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Bryggen, St Mary’s Church, and Håkon’s Hall, before heading to Troldhaugen, the home of Norway’s most famous composer, Edvard Grieg. After arrival at the hotel the evening is yours to enjoy and explore this vibrant city. One recommendation is to take the Fløibanen funicular to the top of nearby Mount Fløyen to enjoy views of Bergen and the surrounding mountains.

On board the Flåm Railway in the snow. Norway

Norway in a Nutshell

Today enjoy an amazing journey by rail, coach and ferry on the famous ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ route between Bergen and Oslo. We start with a rail journey from Bergen to Voss, from here we travel by coach to Gudvangen - where Waterfalls line the road as we weave our way through the valley.

In Gudvangen board a ferry and enjoy a fjord cruise along the narrow and dramatic UNESCO protected Nærøyfjord, ending in the quaint village of Flåm. As we climb three thousand feet to the mountain train station of Myrdal, you will understand why this is considered one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys. From here we continue south to our final stop in Oslo.

The Holmenkollen ski jump in the snow Oslo, Norway.

Sightseeing in Oslo

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel and prepare for our final full day on tour.

On our coach tour learn more about this vibrant European city, as we journey through the history of Oslo, from the world's largest sculpture park by a single artist - Vigeland Sculpture Park to the site of the 1952 Winter Olympics and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump.

The afternoon is your to continue exploring before joining your fellow travelers and tour escort for our final farewell dinner in a local restaurant.

Night View of The Oslo Opera House, Oslo, Norway

Your adventure ends

It is in the morning that we say goodbye as this exciting arctic adventure comes to an end. Depart the hotel with lifelong memories of your time in Norway and Finland under the dancing skies of the Northern Lights.

10 Best Northern Lights Cruises

What's more epic than seeing the aurora borealis in person? Viewing it from a cruise ship.

norway fjord cruise northern lights

Courtesy of Hurtigruten

If seeing the northern lights is on your to-do list, you've likely already looked into the best places to catch a glimpse of them: northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Scandinavia, among others. But have you ever considered seeing them by sea rather than by land?

It turns out many cruise lines offer specially-themed sailings to many of those same destinations. Cruising is also a particularly appealing option for northern lights seekers since the ships can access remote areas far from light pollution, allowing guests to view the aurora borealis in its full brilliance.

Here are 10 of the best cruises you can take that'll help you meet your goal of seeing the northern lights.

  • Embark on your northern lights cruise during the auroral season, generally between late September and late March, when the skies above the Arctic Circle experience longer periods of darkness.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de / Getty Images

On Viking's In Search of the Northern Lights cruise, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests for 13 days from London to Amsterdam, then up the coast of Norway, and north of the Arctic Circle to Tromsø and Alta before heading south to Bergen. The Norwegian fjords are a sight to behold, and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better. The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, which makes for prime aurora-viewing opportunities. Rates start from $5,299 per person in 2025 and 2026. Some routes travel in reverse if you'd prefer to end in London. It's also worth noting that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Courtesy of Aurora Expeditions

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a Northern Lights Explorer itinerary. The trip starts with one night in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before you sail south along the coast to Tromsø, then head back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. Aurora Expeditions offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,795 per person in 2024.

Hurtigruten: The Coastal Express

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. Instead, the routes of this Norwegian ferry company just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora borealis. Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (between September 20, 2024, and March 25, 2025) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company's Northern Lights Promise means you'll get a free six-day southbound or seven-day northbound cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip Coastal Express itinerary from Bergen to Kirkenes (and back to Bergen). Rates start from $2,024 per person in 2025.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Courtesy of Quark Expeditions

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers an aurora sailing each fall. This 12-day itinerary cruises from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Greenland and back from late September into early October. Since the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the natural phenomenon are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,396 per person in 2024.

Oceanwide Expeditions: Northern Iceland and Greenland

Courtesy of Oceanwide Expeditions

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-night aurora borealis sailings from northern Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, opt for the 13-night Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to northern Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-night itinerary start from $4,600 per person, while the 13-night version starts at $6,650 per person, for 2024 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-night Norway and Northern Lights sailings depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Stavanger, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from September to March, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2024, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins, while the Queen Victoria will also set sail in 2025 and 2026. Rates start from $2,103 per person in 2024.

P&O Cruises: Norway

Courtesy of P&O Cruises

British cruise line P&O operates 12-night sailings to Norway year-round. And during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far as Tromsø and Alta, north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck, which you should do to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,680 per person in 2024.

Havila: Round Voyage

Courtesy of Havila Voyages

Like the Hurtigruten cruise mentioned above, Havila's Round Voyage follows the Coastal Express route between Bergen and Kirkenes, stopping in 34 ports during its 12-day adventure up and down the Norwegian coast. The company also has a Northern Lights Promise for guests visiting between October 1 and March 31, although in this case, the replacement six- or seven-day cruise must happen within a month of your return on the original one. 2024's rates on these newer, more environmentally-friendly ships start at just $1,500 per person for an interior room or $2,280 for an exterior room.

Saga: Norway and the Northern Lights

WanRu Chen / Getty Images

British company Saga offers 16-night cruises aboard the Spirit of Discovery from its U.K. base in Portsmouth. The route includes an overnight stay in Tromsø, as well as stops in Alesund, Trøndheim, Honningsvåg, Alta, Bergen, and a side-quest to Flåm, a beautiful inland area known for its epic views of the Norwegian fjords. Wildlife experts from the ORCA European conservation team will be available to help you spot whales, dolphins, and other animals as you sail through their natural environment. Each cabin comes with a private balcony so you'll have incredible views throughout your trip. Prices for 2025's all-inclusive sailings start at $8,087 per person.

Ponant: Nordic Discoveries and Traditions

Courtesy of Ponant

Ponant’s 11-day Norway cruises actually include round-trip flights between Paris and Tromsø, where the journey begins, so you could theoretically make this a two-in-one vacation with a short stint in Paris on either end. From Tromsø, ships make their way south to Narvik and Reine before heading north to Hammerfest, west to Bjornoya, east to Honningsvag, and back to Tromsø via Alta. Rates for sailings in 2025 begin at $11,880 per person.

Year-round activities

The Expedition Team will guide you on your discovery of the Norwegian fjords and the coast, taking you out on hikes and shore landings. They’ll help enhance your experience through talks and lectures on a diverse range of subjects such as Norwegian culture, history, food, wildlife and science.

Adventures into the Heart of Norway

At HX, we have a long history of sailing Norway’s coast that stretches back to the nineteenth century. We’ll show you our country’s rugged and beautiful nature as you jump in a kayak, cruise aboard small expedition boats, pull on snowshoes, or hike through the wilderness* – but that’s not all. Rare wildlife

Norway is a place where you can see whales, dolphins and many seabirds. The best time for spotting whales above the Arctic Circle is in January.

Wildlife in Norway

From the Eagles above, to the nomadic reindeer on land and whales along the coast, Norway is home to a wealth of wildlife. In winter, humpbacks and orcas can sometimes be spotted in the waters north of Tromsø.

Natural phenomena

Above the Arctic Circle, you’ll have a greater chance of seeing the Northern Lights illuminate Norway’s skies in winter. This is the time of year when the country is bathed in soft light and the snowy landscapes glimmer under starlight.

Expedition Ships to Norway

Your stylish expedition ship, MS Spitsbergen, is ideal for navigating the Norwegian fjords and exploring closer to shore. Smaller than many, MS Spitsbergen can venture where others can’t, giving you a true expedition experience.

Kangerlussuaq-Greenland-HGR-116925-Photo_Karsten_Bidstrup.jpg

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'. After a complete reconstruction, MS Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2016. The ship features high technical standards as well as comfortable, modern public areas and cabins. She is modern and environmentally progressive and will undergo further improvements that will reduce emissions and fuel consumption even more. The new ship’s maneuverability and optimal size make her quite suitable for exploring polar waters.

Supporting the community

When you travel with us, you’ll also be supporting local communities. The HX Foundation contributes to restoration projects in Norway, such as the upgrading of the North Cape Steps and the replenishment of the native underwater kelp forests along the coast.

A guide to stavanger, norway for cruise ship visitors.

Three large swords stand in Stavanger as a memory to the Battle of Hafrsfjord in year 872, when King ... [+] Harald Fairhair gathered all of Norway under one crown.

With more than half a million passenger visits recorded on more than 200 cruise ships in 2023, Stavanger is one of the most popular cruise ports in Norway.

Its location on the southwest coast means the city is often included at the beginning or end of a fjords itinerary. On such trips, a port call in Stavanger is a chance to enjoy a Scandinavian city break and to discover the area’s cultural heritage in the city’s many museums.

If your cruise continues on up the coast or doesn't include much time exploring the fjords, Stavanger provides an ideal opportunity to visit the Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most famous fjords, on a day trip.

Gateway To The Lysefjord

For many cruise visitors, Stavanger is synonymous with the Lysefjord, one of Norway’s most famous and stunning fjords. The fjord, with its steep cliffs and clear waters, is a must-see for nature lovers, but is usually only accessible to relatively small cruise ships.

However, Stavanger is the ideal base for excursions to the Lysefjord by passenger ferries or even a more thrilling experience on a RIB boat.

Sightseeing tours and RIB boat trips visit waterfalls on the Lysefjord.

On such sightseeing tours, guests should be able to make out the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) clifftop that towers almost 2,000 feet above the fjord. Closer to ground level, waterfalls, a family of goats, and diverse birdlife are among the highlights.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

While these excursions are usually offered by the cruise line, it’s simple to book independently. The departure point is a short walk from the cruise terminal and you’ll save plenty of money.

The popular 3.5-hour sightseeing cruise from Rodne costs 795 Norwegian kroner (approx $75) when booked in advance. For a more thrilling ride, the 1 hour and 45 minute tour from Stavanger RIB costs 1,390 Norwegian kroner (approximately $130) and comes with all necessary equipment.

Stay In Stavanger

If your cruise itinerary will include sailings along famous Norwegian fjords such as the Sognefjord or Nordfjord, you may prefer to use the port call in Stavanger to see the city.

Unlike many city ports these days, most cruise ships dock in central Stavanger, meaning most major attractions are within walking distance.

The picturesque old town is just steps away from the cruise terminal in Stavanger, Norway.

Where to start? Step off the ship and immediately onto the historic cobbled streets of Gamle Stavanger, the picturesque old town renowned for its charming white, wooden houses.

Wandering through the cobblestone lanes, where vibrant flowers spill from hanging baskets and brighten the streets, is especially delightful on a sunny day. Just be aware before taking photos and peeking into windows that this is an active residential neighborhood.

These charming white facades create a timeless atmosphere, but the city also boasts a vibrant street art scene that adds a burst of color and creativity.

The street art movement, driven by the Nuart festival, features a wide range of works, from large, striking murals to more subtle pieces that interact with the city's environment.

You're never far from murals or other street art in the center of Stavanger.

For more color, head to Øvre Holmegate for a coffee or simply a walk. In contrast to the white buildings that dominate much of the city, this street bursts with vibrant hues. Enjoy a light lunch in its lively sidewalk cafes during the afternoon before heading back to the ship.

Stavanger’s Museums

Norway’s oil and gas hub hosts the family-friendly Norwegian Petroleum Museum , which explores the history, economic impact, and technological progress of the oil industry, as well as its controversies, like disasters and climate change.

The museum features interactive exhibits for kids, including a rescue slide, life raft, and a mini oil platform. The adjacent playground is made from repurposed oil industry components.

Other notable museums include the Stavanger Maritime Museum, highlighting the region's seafaring history, and the Stavanger Art Museum, showcasing Norwegian and international art. The Museum of Archaeology features Viking artifacts and exhibits on Norway's ancient history.

Sightseeing Bus

If you want to get a flavor of the city without walking too much, consider booking a ticket for a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus, always available when cruise ships are in dock.

City sightseeing buses line up next to the cruise terminal in Stavanger.

These sightseeing buses run to a fixed timetable. They can be used as transport between the main sights, or as a straightforward sightseeing tour. It’s a value way to see the sights slightly farther afield, including the sverd i fjell monument of swords, which commemorates the 9th-century Battle of Hafrsfjord.

One important point to note is that Stavanger plays host to two competing sightseeing bus companies: ‘City Sightseeing’ and ‘Hop On’. This can be confusing when you step off the ship, so be sure to know which one visits the places you want to see, as the route maps do differ slightly.

To beat the queues, book online in advance. You’ll save money and you’ll be able to approach the bus directly, skipping the ticketing queues.

Tromso, town in northern Norway, capital of Troms County. Tromsø is located on the island of Tromsoy off the northwestern coast of mainland Norway, in the Norwegian Sea. It is the largest Norwegian town north of the Arctic Circle. Troms County includes the adjacent mainland; Tromsoy Island is linked to the mainland by a bridge. As the county seat, Tromsø is the administrative, communications, cultural, and educational center of northern Norway. It is also a fishing port with fish-processing industries. Other industries include shipbuilding, brewing, prefabricated houses, high technology, and tourism. The town is served by an airport and is a starting point and support base for arctic expeditions. A meteorological station, an institute studying the aurora borealis, or northern lights, and the University of Tromsø (founded in 1968) are all located in Tromso. Tromso was founded in the mid-13th century, and granted a town charter in 1794. The Norwegian government was based in Tromsø for a short period during World War II (1939-1945). The modern Tromsdal Church, built in 1965, is known as the “Cathedral of the Arctic;” there is also a wooden cathedral (1861) in the center of the town. Tromso Museum contains an aquarium, and is devoted to natural history and to the history and culture of the Saami (Lapp).

Narvik is a Northern Norwegian town with a population of 19,000. It is located at the head of Vestfjorden/Ofotfjorden, close to the Swedish border. Narvik celebrated it’s centenary in 2002. It was founded when the Swedish iron-ore company LKAB was looking for a transhipment harbour for the iron-ore excavated in Kiruna’s mines. A railway was built from Kiruna to Narvik to carry the iron-ore to an ice-free harbour. The early name of the town was Victoriahamn, but was later changed to Narvik which was the name of a local bay. Narvik is also known for the battles that took place here during World War II. German forces invaded Narvik on the 9th April 1940. Narvik was important to the Germans because of the iron-ore which they used in the weapon industry. In the days following April 9th British Naval ships sailed into the fjord and fierce sea battles were carried out in the harbour and in nearby fjords. This resulted in 40 vessels being sunk both in the port basin and in the fjords. Among them were 2 Norwegian armoured cruisers, 2 British and 10 German destroyers, giving a serious blow to Hitler’s Naval force. On May 28th 1940 the Allied Forces (Norwegians, British, French and Polish) forced the Germans out of Narvik, driving them, with their backs against the wall, up the mountains towards the Swedish border. This is known as the first Allied victory over Nazi-Germany during World War II. Unfortunately, events in France in May 1940 caused the Allied Headquarters to withdraw their troops from Narvik, giving the Germans space to re-enter and this time occupy Narvik. Narvik remained occupied till the end of the war.

Alesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.

Stavanger, the oil capital of Norway, is actually a medieval city. Although it didn't gain city status until 1125 when construction of the beautiful medieval cathedral began, the area has been populated for over 10,000 years. The city is an exciting combination of old and new. Narrow lanes and white timber houses are all in well preserved traditional style, from classic style to funkis. It is a modern city with a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Contrast characterises this city, the people who live there, the surrounding landscape - and the weather! All this makes Stavanger a pleasant and very charming city. Stavanger is also the centre of higher education in Rogaland county. It has a number of cultural institutions including international, British and French schools because of the great influx of foreigners connected to the oil industry and to the "Emigration Centre for Genealogical Studies and Contact Between Norway and North America". The Canning Museum is the only one of its kind in the world and testifies to what has been an important industry for Stavanger. Among the many other attractions are the theatre and the symphonic orchestra that has its home in the beautifully situated Kulturhuset.
