Breweries & Distilleries in the Cairngorms National Park
There are lots of good things brewing in the Highlands, with the Park playing host to six distilleries in the Cairngorms, four of which boast sophisticated visitor centres…
The Speyside area is world famous for whisky and the six distilleries in the Cairngorms all offer something different, from iconic design, to Royal connections to personalised, hands-on tours. Royal Lochnagar, Dalwhinnie , Cairngorm Brewery and Glenlivet have visitor centres, all full of knowledgeable, passionate staff. Others can be visited by appointment. But it’s not just whisky for which the Highlands is well known – increasingly the area is gaining a global reputation for its gin production, too!
No listings found…
Speyside and whisky are a world famous combination, which is why whisky loving globetrotters always ensure the Cairngorms is on their destination list.
But this is not a recent reputation; allegedly during a state visit in 1822, George IV went out of his way to ensure he got served a whisky from Glenlivet! And, of course, today Glenlivet Distillery is one of the many acclaimed distilleries in the Cairngorms National Park.
The Cairngorms also has a rich history of whisky smuggling, and tales of smugglers and their antics abound!
This is because laws were introduced in the 1700s, lobbied for by the big distilleries, that forced the smaller operators underground. You can be assured, if you book into a tour, you can hear many a lively whisky tale and there are many caves and bothies associated with whisky smuggling which you can visit.
Gin has been growing in popularity in recent years, with traditional whisky distilleries in the Cairngorms such as Balmenach now also producing the hand-crafted, premium gin Caorunn.
Visitors can now get an insight into the gin making process, too, at Balmenach , but also at Persie Gin , near Blairgowrie, just off the Sn owRoads.
Whisky and Chocolate: 100 things to do in the Cairngorms
Award winning Dalwhinnie Distillery is a VisitScotland five star attraction and the home to a famous Highland Single Malt Whisky renowned for its gentle flavours accentuated with notes of heather honey, citrus, vanilla and sweet malt.
There is a wide range of diverse distilleries and breweries in the Cairngorms National Park so it depends which is your favourite to drink. It’s not just whisky, either; there’s been a huge growth in Scottish gins recently and you’ll find distilleries like Balmenach (the home of Caorunn gin) and Persie also do gin tours and tastings now too. Aviemore also has its own brewery, Cairngorm Brewery which produces traditional beers such as Wild Cat and Stag.
It also depends on what kind of distillery you want to visit. For example, if you’re interested in Royal history, then Royal Lochnagar would be a good choice. But if you wanted a smaller, more intimate tour experience then Speyside Distillery would be a good option.
Yes, tastings and tours are a fabulous way to while away a couple of hours in the Cairngorms.
Especially in light of Covid-19 restrictions, it is advisable to book in advance and ensure you are aware of the procedures, such as the requirement to wear a face mask.
If you book a tasting and you’re the designated driver, most distilleries offer a driver package of samples to take home and try at your leisure, when you’re no longer behind the wheel!
Breweries and distilleries are dotted all over the Cairngorms National Park so it’s likely there will be one in easy reach of wherever you are!

- Gin Distilleries
Perthshire Gin Distilleries
Perthshire compromises the central part of Scotland and marks the boundary between Scotland’s Lowland and Highland regions. In addition to a wide variety of excellent attractions you can explore within the area, there are a lot of excellent Perthshire gin distilleries you can indulge in.
Perthshire is home to several excellent botanicals that make the gin in the region incredibly delicious – here are the distilleries to look out for on your next visit to Scotland.
In This Post
Badvo’s Distillery
Badvo’s Distillery is self-titled as Pitlochry’s Gin, and we agree. Each gin created from Badvo’s Distillery is made with botanicals that are hand foraged and then distilled in traditional copper stills – which you can see when you visit!
Each bottle of Badvo Gin uses Badvo spring water, adding a zingy finish to its smooth and crisp taste. This exquisite taste is thanks to sun-ripened juniper, the main botanical to create this divine spirit. Badvo’s is one of the smallest distilleries we will mention on this list, so take advantage of your opportunity to help this budding gin distillery grow.
The Gin Bothy
Just northeast of Perth sits the Gin Bothy, one of the best free-to-visit experiences near central attractions like Glamis Castle.
The Gin Bothy’s pride and joy gin is the Gunshot Gin, named because of its distinct gold medal colour and the warm inner glow after drinking it. The gin’s flavour comes from the unique combination of cinnamon, cloves, and a touch of honey to give the drink a delicious and full aftertaste.
Experience the gin process at the Gin Bothy, and then wind the afternoon down with a delicious snack and sip of their exquisite gin.
Speyside Distillery
The Speyside Distillery has honed the art of distilling gin in one of the most beautiful attractions in Scotland, the Cairngorms National Park . The verdant Cairngorms is home to several delicious botanicals, each lovingly used in this small, hand-built, artisanal distillery.
The Distillery was a barley mill in the 1700s but fell into disuse in 1965. It was reopened in 1990 and has been producing delicious gins. Their secret is carefully chosen botanicals, like limes, lemon balm, sweet cicely, blood oranges, and potentially even a hint of rosemary. You’ll taste the sharp citrus cut through the drink.
The Speyside Distillery is a small distillery with a lot of charm – if you’re in the Cairngorms looking for gins with a quality finish, then this one is an excellent choice.
Gin Laboratory
The Gin Laboratory is a unique name for a gin distillery, and they provide a similarly unique experience for visitors visiting Kinross. While many distilleries want to keep a portion of their distilling process a secret, the Gin Laboratory takes a very open and scientific approach to making their gin.
One of the premier experiences you can partake in at the Gin Laboratory is the Gin Blending Experience. Create up to three flavourful gins with up to 40 different flavours, including citrus, floral, herbal, or fruity splash. You can even take 250ml of your own handcrafted brew home with you!
The Gin Laboratory’s open approach to their bottled spirits and the freedom to brew your gin makes it one gin distillery in Perthshire you can’t miss.
Persie Distillery
Found at the foot of the Glenshee, the Persie Distillery a master at making hand-crafted gin. You might’ve already seen their iconic cloudy bottles in stores around Scotland, but nothing beats tasting them in the distillery with an informative guide.
The minds behind the world’s first touring gin club, Gin Club Scotland, created this gin brand. That wealth of experience has been used to create each bottle distilled within Persie, making the flavour of this distillery’s gin unlike any other.
If you’re a gin connoisseur, we recommend trying their Zesty Citrus gin, Herby & Aromatic, and the Sweet & Nutty Old Tom – consistently their most popular gins during tastings. The Persie Distillery tour is highly rated by travellers and features a sampling of their best gin and vodka.
Only indulge a little, though, as afterwards, you’ll be taken on a distillery tour that covers everything the distillery does to make their delicious gin. Tours require booking ahead of time and are about £20 per head. The Persie Distillery is 10 minutes from Blairgowrie , which means there’s no reason not to stop by!
Strathearn Distillery
The rural region of Perthshire is rich with gorgeous views and places to appreciate, and Strathearn Distillery ranks as one of the best if you love gin. This distillery is only a few miles from Scone Palace, making it an excellent location to wind down with a crisp gin.
Strathearn is a small distillery, and their gins are a small batch supply that you can’t find in many places besides this humble Perthshire distillery. Stop by and sample their Heather Rose or Scottish gin when you’re in the area – we bet you won’t be disappointed.
The Perth Distillery Co
One of the most prominent gin distillers in Perthshire is The Perth Distillery Co, which you can find in the heart of Perth. Whether you’re a fan of floral Perth pink gin or crisp and botanical Scottish gin, the Perth Distillery Co is set on giving you a gin-tasting experience unlike any you’ve had before.
This distillery’s small-batch gin is lovingly made with 15 distinctive botanicals that create a combination that is both smooth and flavourful. Feel aromatic star anise, fennel, ginger, and a citrus burst of lemon and lime dance along your palate with each sip.
If you find yourself in the Fair City overlooking the River Tay when exploring Perthshire distilleries, The Perth Distillery Co provides a benchmark that’s difficult to beat for handcrafted Perth Gin. Original or Pink, the choice is yours.

Fabulous afternoon
Fabulous afternoon being introduced to and tasting 6 of the lovely Persie selection followed by our behind the scenes visit. Really can't commend it enough. Thanks to Chrissie, Simon and team for everything. Great hosts and perfect customer service, both during and post visit.
Date of experience : 11 August 2023
Highly recommend!
We came while on our honeymoon for the gin tasting and loved it - it wasn’t pretentious like some distillery tours we’ve been to, and we were asked about our preferences (without feeling judged!) and recommended garnishes/mixers with each gin to suit what we like. Really generous with a second helping of my favourite gin and even included paper cups for the driver to take some drinks home for later, followed by a friendly tour. We ended up buying 3 bottles for home and plan to order more! On site free parking. Thanks Persie :)

Brilliant way to spend an afternoon with friends!
We thoroughly enjoyed our gin tour on Saturday afternoon. It was just the right amount of information in a lovely, unpretentious atmosphere. Chrissie was brilliant - clearly knows her stuff and a fun host and it was really interesting learning about the process and seeing the different stages. Learnt lots, had a laugh, got tipsy and came away with our own supplies - what's not to like?!

Educational day drinking
What a great way to spend an afternoon! There was 8 of us but there were also smaller tables at the same session. Chrissie was informative and good fun. Simon and Chrissie took us through the distillery explaining the whole process which was really interesting. Loved trying new gins with various mixers and garnishes as well as their vodka. Highly recommend a trip here.

Gintastic :)
Really good afternoon with superfriendly owner, Chrissie. Lovely gins, mixers and garnishes - learnt a lot and bought some new gin experiences too!! Only slight disappointment was that the tour was meant to be 30-40 minutes; we booked a taxi on the hour but could easily have spent another 45 mins sampling gin. A lovely way to spend an afternoon :)

Fantastic local gin and distillery!
Only expected to spend 5 minutes in the shop, however we were welcomed by the staff and were soon sat down with a sample board of all their gins and tonics. Their knowledge of gins and their accompanying tonics, based on taste and smell preferences, allowed them to give serving suggestions. Lovely gin and local distillery. If you're in the area or even just passing through, I highly recommend a pitstop!

Chrissie was an excellent host
Chrissie was an excellent host, very knowledgeable and informative. We had a very enjoyable 2 hours sampling a variety of gins, and learning how the different types of gins are made. We enjoyed meeting the 6 other guest samplers as well. Really like the fact that a donation is given to a local Animal Charity in Perthshire for every bottle sold. A great incentive to buy a couple of bottles! Highly recommend the Spaniel Gin mixed with tomato juice to make a Red Snapper......Delicious! Will definitely be back!

Lovely afternoon spent sampling the…
Lovely afternoon spent sampling the range of Persie gins. Chrissie and Simon are very welcoming and knowledgeable. We were staying close by and took advantage of the pick up/drop off service they offer. We had the pleasure of being picked up and dropped off by Lilias (a lovely lady). Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area

Chrissie is the perfect host!
What a great afternoon our party had at Persie Distillery. Chrissie couldn't have been more accommodating. Not only did she rearrange our visit after we had misjudged the availability of taxis in Blairgowrie! She also managed to fit in 4 of us when she was expecting 2! She really went above and beyond to make sure we didn't miss out on any of the experience given that we couldn't sit with the rest of the party due to covid restrictions. The gin was lovely too and we went home happy with our purchases!

Our Persie day out
We were welcomed into the distillery by very nice staff, given all the information about how the day should go and then we started to find out about the gins on offer. After a very informative run down then came the fun bit - tasting, mixing, and just enjoying six different gins. As I was the driver they made sure I didn't miss out by giving me them home in little containers to enjoy later. We had a lovely day out with a tour round the whole place too. I'd say "if you fancy a good gin just GO"

An absolute must-visit
2nd visit for a taste tour led by the fabulous Chrissie once again. We tried 7 gins, a gin liquer and a vodka with a variety of mixers and garnishes. A great way to find where your gin pallette lies even if gin is not your regular choice of drink. Their gin is delightful, but their vibe, warm and friendly welcome and quality service will bring you back time and again. Thoroughly recommend this small, family-run business to anyone.

Liquid Tour
Arrived for our liquid tour to a very busy distillery with limited staff. Despite the challenges of social distancing and lots of customers, we were made to feel welcome and watched the staff handle the situation with ease. The staff are very knowledgeable and take the opinions of their customers to hand. Never too busy to help or answer any questions. Brilliant wee distillery, great staff, and amazing Gin!

The highlight of holiday
The highlight of holiday, Whilst shopping in Dunkeld and tasting Persie gin for the first time the lady in the shop told us about the distillery which was nearby our holiday let, we called in after walking our dogs and what a welcome we received, not the usual pretentious approach that some distillers take. We were a party of 4 with 3 dogs and were made to feel like we had entered a friends house, we chose the tasting option which certainly did not disappoint, the host Holly was very friendly and excellent in her knowledge of the ingredients and process, the slow gin made with their own plums was just beautiful. Definitely worth a visit, we left with a variety of goods and know we will return.

Visited with two friends on Saturday… what a delightful location in beautiful surroundings. Gin tasting and talk from Chrissie was very informative. Amazing gins and fabulous value for money. Chrissie and Simon made us very welcome and had a great afternoon. Well worth the visit and will definitely be back in future… Thanks once again!!! 🥃. Jackie

Very friendly
Very friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Detailed, interesting descriptions of the gins. Never felt rushed and nothing was too much trouble. Our driver and our accompanying dog were both included in the experience. When visiting Phil the Still, Simon gave a very full explanation which was mostly understood. There was no pressure to buy bottles but we did!

Superb gin, the Herb gin is brilliant I absolutely love a Red Snapper! Will never go back to a Bloody Mary - thank you. Excellent service, prompt delivery & that personal tough with a hand written compliment slip saying thank you. Those little touches mean a lot - thank you Persie!

Gin tasting at Persie Distillery
We were a small group of 3 that attended a gin tasting at Persie Distillery joining another group if 2. Chrissie was so informative about our tasting gins. Talked to us all about our tastes and suggested the best mixers so we would get the best out of our tasting. We all found gins we liked having not tried them before or even thought about trying. The tour of the still and bottling area was informative and amazed us all that so many great gins are made in a small compact area. Well worth a visit and booking on to a gin tasting.

Excellent tasting and tour - friendly, fun and informative
We thoroughly enjoyed our tasting and tour (as did our dog - thank you for having him!). The tasting session was tremendously informative, and a lot of fun. The tour was fascinating - really interesting to see how the gins are produced, and to learn how you'd developed the gins and are building the business up. We also loved the links to the dog and cat charities, and the quips on the postcards and coasters made us giggle (or was that the gin?). Our driver (my husband) also appreciated the take-away cups of gin for him to try at home. We will be singing the praises of Persie's for some time to come!

Higher Recommended
What a great place - the tour and tasting was well organised and informative and Chrissy was clearly very passionate about her products. We have completely changed the way we drink gin now, after years of doing it the same way! Thoroughly recommend a trip to the Persie Distillery, worth every minute
Date of experience : 21 September 2021
Fantastic tour.
We are a group of 7 who had a fantastic visit, tasting and tour of distillery. Brooks and Liz were fantastic hosts who happily provided the tour even though we arrived in the middle of a major power cut. Would certainly recommend Persie as a visit for both gin lovers and non- gin lovers very informative.

Gift the dream experience of a lifetime for all Gin Lovers!
After years of being the boring drink your parents drank, gin is back in the game! And Scottish gin is hitting the big time. With 70% of gin consumed in the UK made in Scotland, gin is hot on the heels of whisky to become the new national spirit.
That’s why Persie Distillery is worth a visit. It is a small, family-owned business just north of Blairgowrie in Highland Perthshire. Established in 2014, the distillery welcomes visitors throughout the year for gin tastings and tours.
Developed by the man behind the world’s first touring gin club, Gin Club Scotland, he found that gin-lovers demand more than a nice taste. They need aroma! So he has developed three aromatic styles of gin: Zesty Citrus; Herby & Aromatic; and Sweet & Nutty Old Tom. All three styles are hand-crafted in small batches – then bottled and labelled on site by Simon the distiller – and any friends and family he can rope in. His mum has even come out of retirement to join the bottling line!
GALLERY
So come and meet the family and see a small craft distillery in action. You can enjoy a nosing and tasting session of three aromatic gins, or buy your gin-loving friends a gift from our range of gin merchandise. Not forgetting drivers, non-drinkers and children! Take your pick from coffee, tea or soft drinks – with plenty of crisps, nuts or biscuits to keep you going. The distillery is open to the public six days a week (it is closed on Fridays for private tastings): you can either pop in for free samples and a quick chat, or if it’s a special occasion you might prefer to book a ‘liquid tour’ and have a 3-glass gin flight in the distillery tasting room for £15 per head. This way, you can hear all about the back-story of Persie Gin, the botanicals, the process and the brand, then have a tour of Phil the Still and the bottling hub.
The magic happens in a steading-turned-distillery in the former Persie Hotel on the A93 – the highest public road in the UK and the start of the SnowRoads adventure through Cairngorms National Park. Just a 40-minute drive from Pitlochry, Perth, Dundee, Braemar or Dunkeld, the distillery is seven miles north of Blairgowrie, at the foot of Glenshee.
Opening hours
Saturday to Thursday: 12 noon to 6pm
Friday: Closed for private tastings.
Open February to December.
Visitors in January by appointment.
