Pistol Annies â âHell of a Holidayâ review
Weâve reached that time of the year when artists start wheeling out the Christmas albums but we didnât expect to be getting one from Pistol Annies aka Miranda Lambert , Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe . They kicked back into action in 2018 with âInterstate Gospelâ, their first studio album in five years and it was a welcome return for the powerhouse trio. We hadnât heard sight nor sound of the Annies for the past year or so, making it a complete surprise when they announced they had a Christmas album coming out.
âHell of a Holidayâ is perhaps best described as an alternative Christmas album and itâs most certainly not the most festive of collections Iâve heard. It features 10 original tracks and three covers, and itâs without a doubt a very different offering than what most artists come up with for this time of year. Pistol Annies are known for their tongue-in-cheek humour and biting lyrics, and that hasnât changed just because theyâre singing about the holidays. The title track opens the record and itâs an uptempo start to an album that has a tendency to drift into downtempo. The trioâs harmonies are central to the track and the instrumentation recalls Christmas songs of yesteryear, and itâs fair to say itâs one of the more positive moments on the record.
Lead track âSnow Globeâ, a combination of hand claps and harmonies, explores the idea of being trapped in a snow globe so you can live your festive dreams all year round. Itâs a quirky sentiment and thereâs something quite heartwarming about it. The album takes a darker turn on third track âHarlan County Coalâ where the trio joke about no one being sober at Christmas before delivering lyrics about a couple struggling to afford the holidays who are at odds with one another. Itâs a far cry from the usual wide-eyed optimism of Christmas songs, where itâs usually suggested everyone goes out all for the holidays.
A cover of Merle Haggardâs âIf We Make It Through Decemberâ is one of the highlights on the record. With Lambert on the lead vocals, the song sounds like something that could neatly fit on any of her studio albums. âMake You Blueâ explores the pressures that come with the festive season and âThe Only Thing I Wantedâ celebrates the idea of finding happiness in love rather than material gifts.
The album picks up again towards the end. âSleigh Rideâ is more in line with my idea of Christmas music and the harmonies of the three women are brilliant. âJoyâ is about celebrating the important things and putting the material to one side, a message that is often lost in the mad rush to buy the best presents you can find. âHell of a Holidayâ closes with an acapella version of âAuld Lang Syneâ, which is a beautiful way to bring things to a close.
âHell of a Holidayâ is definitely a different kind of Christmas album. For me, itâs a little bit too downtempo and dare I say it dreary in places. I like my Christmas music to be uplifting and infectious, and while I appreciate the Annies are giving an alternative perspective, I found the album to be a bit too much of a bummer in places. Donât get me wrong, it has its moments but I donât think Iâll be reeling this album out to soundtrack my Christmas parties.

Pistol Annies prepare to reload
Country supergroup confirm new material
It has bee a long wait for fans of the Pistol Annies, but new music from the trio is definitely getting closer.
In a recent interview, to Country blog 'The Boot' trio member Angaleena Presley said that the Annies have finished recording their third studio album.
âWe just finished our third record," she added.
"Two weeks ago as of July 23 , âSo we donât really have a release date, per se, yet, but the record is there.â
On July 18, the trio â comprised of Presley, Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe â shared an image of themselves in the recording studio, captioned âSanginâ some songs #staytuned,â on social media.
The group has not yet revealed the albumâs title or further details of the project, but fans have been eager to find out as the three women have dropped hints on social media and in interviews.
âWeâll be going into the studio soon,â Monroe commented back in April. âWeâve been writing, and weâve written some of my favorite songs Iâve ever written in my life. We went to Mirandaâs farm last week and really hunkered down and got some good stuff."
The Pistol Annies have not shared new music since the 2013 release of their sophomore album, Annie Up.
When the trio cancelled all upcoming performances later that year, rumours of a break-up began to emerge. However, all three of the groupâs members denied any tension within the band, citing time management and their busy solo careers as the cause of the hiatus.
In 2017, Lambert began hinting at the possibility of new music to come the following year, and signs of new music on the horizon have continued through 2018. Presley and Monroe made surprise appearances at two of Lambertâs Livinâ Like Hippies Tour stops in March, and they joined together for another performance during Lambert and Little Big Townâs 2018 Bandwagon Tour in July. Lambert also teased that she might be working on writing new Annies music in January.

Pistol Annies Reunite at Country Music Hall of Fame, Announce More Live Shows [Pictures]
Miranda Lambert 's name was on the ticket Wednesday (Sept. 26) at the Country Music Hall of Fame, but the night was all about the Pistol Annies .
Lambert was performing the second and final show of her residency at the museum in Nashville when she turned the evening into an Annie-athon with fellow members Ashley Monroe and Angeleena Presley . The trio debuted three new songs off their upcoming album Interstate Gospel , announced Thursday (Sept. 27), as well as a series of past fan favorites. The evening proved that the Annies remain as brilliant, bold and impactful as we remember them.
Pistol Annies Are Back and Better Than Ever
The sold-out crowd wholly embraced the trio from the moment they took the stage with the smoldering "I Feel a Sin Comin' On" through the beloved closing umber, "End of My Story." In between was a packed hour of Annies power — their first 'official' show in five years — in which they debuted "Interstate Gospel," " Got My Name Changed Back " and "Best Years of My Life."
"We have been working on new music and we're real excited about it," Lambert said. "Thank you for loving the Annies and welcoming us back into the world."
"Got My Name Changed Back" is the most conspicuous of new songs, especially with Presley's sly prelude: "This song has nothing to do with us and is about no one in this band," she said before they launched into the fiery number with a melody reminiscent of Johnny Cash.
Lambert takes lead vocals and was practically gleeful as she sang: " I don't want to be a Mrs. on paper no more " and " Well I got me an ex that I adored / But he got along good with a couple road whores ."
"That was fun," she said at the end of the song, asking the crowd to decipher its meaning, "Ya'll get it?"
"Got My Name Changed Back" will bring the bounty of discussion a day after the reunion concert, but "Best Years of My Life" is the perhaps most intriguing of the new music. Leave it to the Annies to take a depressing subject matter and make it sharp and witty. " I picked a good day for a recreational Percocet ," Monroe wistfully sings in the first line, setting the tone for rest of the song that uses the title sarcastically to tell the story of someone who settled for less-than in life and is " in the middle of the worst of it ."
The album's title track is the most upbeat of the songs they shared on Wednesday night, with the jubilant, energetic number built on a melody of classic country and gospel. " The sinners say gospel is saving my soul, " they sing over a perky acoustic guitar as Lambert plays washboard.
The trio rounded out their mini set with a variety of notable throwbacks, including "Hush Hush," "Hell on Hells," "Bad Example" and "Girls Like Us." In true Annies fashion, each woman had her moment to shine. Monroe brought the room to a hush with lead vocals on the sobering “Dear Sobriety,” while Presley showed off her strong songwriting muscle on the fiery “Wrangled” and Lambert owned the stage during “Got My Name Changed Back.”
“We’re three girlfriends that live a lot of life. We’ve got ex-husbands and husbands and babies and family things, all the things that you deal with in life," Lambert said, reflecting on the last several years. "And we sit around write about our lives. Our records are slumber parties on wheels, so thank you very much for listening."
Take this away: the Annies are as fearless as ever. The trio will perform three living room-style shows to bring new music to fans, with upcoming concerts at the Ryman Auditorium on Oct. 25, the Town Hall in New York City on Nov. 2 and the Novo in Los Angeles on Nov. 7. Tickets are available starting Friday (Oct. 5).
Interstate Gospel comes out on Nov. 2.

ALBUM REVIEW: Hell of a Holiday – Pistol Annies
Pistol Annies have unleashed their first Christmas album – Hell of a Holiday, available everywhere today here – a seductively laidback, country-infused Christmas record.Â
Country music trio Pistol Annies have released their collection of original holiday tunes on their first Christmas album, Hell of a Holiday , out now. Of the project the trio say, â We couldnât be happier we got to make a Christmas Album. Once we finally surrendered and let the Christmas songwriting spirit take over, we were so inspired and felt that magic on every single one of these songs… We hope to be a part of so many peopleâs Christmas memories for years to come .â
Hell of a Holiday stands out from a roster of recent country music Christmas releases that centre around Christmas covers, bringing 10 original festival tracks written by the Annies with their signature winking humour, while also honouring the spirit of the season. Lyrically, the original tracks are clever, witty and refreshing. The title track conjures images of the hectic holiday whirlwind that arrives every 1 st November as does the surprisingly joyful ‘Make You Blue’, while ‘ Snow Globe’ dreams of a romantic winter wonderland, replete with whimsy and vintage charm. Similarly, ‘Harlan County Coal’ is a blue-collar Christmas sonic dream, delivered with a layer of grit as the trio sing of the hardworking required for normal families to bring Christmas to life and ‘Happy Birthday’ describes an all-too-familiar and comical cast of familial characters. ‘The Only Thing I Wanted’ offers a melancholic and wistful take on the familiar track ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You.’ Elsewhere, the trio tribute Santa himself on ‘Come on Christmas Time’ – a delightfully, lazily grooving and seductive modern-day Christmas classic – and return to the meaning of Christmas on the blues-y ‘Leanin’ on Jesus’ and ‘Believing.’ The project does also take on standard classics, including âSleigh Ride,â and Merle Haggardâs âIf We Make it Through December,â plus a reimagined âAuld Lang Syneâ – but these merely round out the project.
Hell of a Holiday is a delightfully humble Christmas album that will make broad swathes of people feel seen – both in the joy of the season and the hardships that it also brings for so many. The trio’s vocals are born for this kind of nuanced, emotional project and are borne out to the full on this wonderfully rounded creation that stands apart as a brave new Christmas record – complete with some stunning new classics for the holiday season.

Pistol Annies: Where Are They Now?

It is safe to say no one was too happy when Pistol Annies broke up, but it was good for each of the girls individually. They had been singing together in 2011 and released their first album, Hell on Heels , in the same year. They had another big hit album in 2013, Annie Up .
Over the years they have released solo albums and have created their own paths on the ole country road.
Miranda released her first solo album back in 2005, before Pistol Annies formed and continued to sing her own music throughout the time the band was together. Over the years, she has released 6 albums and been on tour multiple times. Most recently, Lambert has released a 2 disk album, The Weight of These Wings . Currently, she is on her Highway Vagabond Tour with Old Dominion and Aubrey Sellers.
Angaleena Presley:
After Pistol Annies broke up, Presley wasted no time getting her first album out in 2014, American Middle Class . She also released 3 singles that year as well. She has got a bright future for 2017 as she plans to release her second album Wrangled . The 12-track album will be released April 17th. She co-wrote all 12 tracks.
Before getting together with Miranda and Angaleena, Monroe released an album in 2006, Satisfied . Since the break up of the band, she has released 2 albums and a commentary on one of them. In 2013, Monroe married Atlanta Braves player, John Danks and on Christmas in 2016, she announced that she is pregnant with her first child by sharing the ultrasound pictures on Instagram.

Pistol Annies are set to serve up yuletide fun during the "Pistol Annies Hell of a Holiday Special" hosted by Blair Garner and streaming on the Annies' Facebook page tonight (8:00 p.m. ET). Featuring special performances and a sit-down with the trio, the event will also serve as a fundraiser for the Music Health Alliance. Tune in here .
Celebrated as "a pour of whiskey in egg nog" (Tennessean), Hell of a Holiday features 10 original tracks written by the Annies (Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley), all full of "both humor and harmony" (Associated Press), while also honoring the spirit of the season. The project also features their take on standards including "Sleigh Ride," and Merle Haggard's "If We Make it Through December," plus a reimagined "Auld Lang Syne." Photographer and artist Gina Binkley created the striking cover artwork.
A musical "force of nature" (Entertainment Weekly), Pistol Annies combines the talents of acclaimed country standouts Miranda Lambert (Lone Star Annie), Ashley Monroe (Hippie Annie) and Angaleena Presley (Holler Annie), delivering a high-spirited take on life the way real people live it. Each prolific songwriters and vocalists, the Annie collective allows the women the freedom to explore the genre beyond their individual careers celebrating friendship, the rough patches and girl power.
Having recorded with both the Chieftains and Jewel, their music has also been featured on The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond. They have released three albums: 2011's Gold-certified Hell on Heels, which produced the Platinum single "Hell On Heels"; 2013's Annie Up; and 2018's Grammy-nominated masterpiece Interstate Gospel. Their new Christmas album Hell of a Holiday is available now.
Pistol Annies, Ashley McBryde, and More Join Miranda Lambert on Tour
Miranda Lambert announced that she’s heading back on the road for her Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars tour later this year. While some dates have already gone on sale, others’ on-sale dates are yet to be announced.
The tour’s roster features an all-female lineup, which we’re extremely excited about! Each artist/group will perform on select dates. Not everyone on the tour is “country” per se, but it will be an incredible show nonetheless.
Pistol Annies
Are you wondering how the Pistol Annies can open for Miranda when she’s part of the group? Our guess is that Miranda will take the stage after the initial opener and will later be joined by Angaleena Presley and Ashley Monroe for a few songs in the middle of her set. You won’t want to miss these three perform!
Ashley McBryde
We are so excited that Ashley McBryde is on this tour! People need to be exposed to real country music and Ashley McBryde does just that. Ashley performed at this year’s Country Radio Seminar and she’s as awesome in person as you’d expect (and down to Earth, too!).
Maren Morris
While most of Maren Morris ‘ recent music isn’t country, she’s still a kickass artist who deserves respect. She cowrote every single song on her last two albums, which had several hits. We’d still check out her show.
Tenille Townes
After seeing Tenille Townes perform recently, we were hooked! She rocks out on her guitar and has incredible stage presence. Her ultra-popular song, Somebody’s Daughter, is worth a listen if you haven’t heard it. She’ll make a great addition to this tour.
Grammy-nominated Elle King ‘s music is a mix of genres, but she’ll definitely fit with the badass/girl power vibe of this tour. We are excited to see her perform!
Caylee Hammack
Caylee Hammack is the newest artist of the lineup and is part of UMG Nashville . Her current single is titled “Family Tree”.
Here are the dates for the tour:

Countryâs Fierce Supergroup Pistol Annies Returns, Humor Intact (and Baby on the Way)
By Jewly Hight
- Oct. 31, 2018
NASHVILLE â Standing onstage at the Ryman Auditorium last week between her Pistol Anniesâ bandmates Ashley Monroe and Miranda Lambert, Angaleena Presley set up the gleeful divorce tune âGot My Name Changed Backâ by announcing, âThis next song is not about anyone in this band.â Lambert, who has endured more than a few tabloid headlines, quickly disagreed. âSheâs full of it,â she said in stronger language.
Thatâs the attitude that has endeared this country supergroup to its fans â the Annies seem like theyâre both letting it all hang out and inhabiting personas that are larger than life. Itâs been five years since the band released new music â the Ryman show heralded the arrival of âInterstate Gospel,â out on Friday â and even longer since country music was dominated by the down-home comedy and depictions of domestic troubles that are their specialties. The Anniesâ priorities set them apart in the mainstream landscape: Theyâre far more focused on entertaining their audience, and one another, than their chart stats.
When the group quietly formed in 2010, the memory of the backlash against the Dixie Chicks â brought on by their refusal to appease country-radio gatekeepers angered by a political comment â still haunted the country landscape. New female acts seemed to be competing for a shrinking number of spots.
Even so, the Annies opted for sisterly solidarity. Theyâd seen how tough it could be out there alone: Lambert, 34, didnât land a No. 1 song until her 11th single; Monroe, 32, had weathered a short-lived label deal; and Presley, 42, had struggled to give her publisher songs deemed suitably commercial.
Not that womenâs prospects at country radio have improved â the percentage of songs by women in rotation dropped to 10.4 percent in 2017 . Breezy flirtation from affable male acts is the reigning norm in the country mainstream, and the Anniesâ style of songwriting couldnât be further from it.
The idiosyncratic specificity and dark humor of Presleyâs lyrics were what originally drew in Monroe and Lambert. (Monroe shared a few of Presleyâs compositions with Lambert, which prompted an impulsive after-midnight phone call to Presley, inviting her to team up.) âI was broke and getting divorced,â Presley recalled, on a leather sofa with her bandmates in the library of their managerâs West Nashville home. âIt was like a golden ticket to me.â
The trio was able to skip some of the thankless, anonymous striving that baby bands ordinarily face because Lambert, one of countryâs most magnetic stars, was eager to put her connections and reputation behind the group. At first, she sprang the Annies on her unsuspecting fans by inserting unannounced sets in the middle of her shows.
Soon, people began cheering at the sight of their three customized mic stands â for âHippie Annieâ (Monroe), âHoller Annieâ (Presley) and âLone Star Annieâ (Lambert) â being carted onstage. The momentum kept building, through high-profile appearances and two well-received albums, âHell on Heelsâ in 2011 and âAnnie Upâ in 2013, until the trio abruptly canceled a headlining tour.
âIt was a lot really quickly,â Lambert said. âI feel like we were just all running a hundred miles an hour. You canât do that for that long, you know? Youâve got to sort of take a breather, go find yourself solo again and get married, get divorced, have babies, whatever youâre doing.â Presley chimed in with a far-fetched claim: âWe slept with each otherâs husbands.â The others hissed in mock exasperation, as if sheâd revealed a shameful secret, then joined her in inventing tales of rehab stints.
The Anniesâ reunion was spurred by a text from Lambert with a song idea. Within minutes, Presley and Monroe responded, adding verses, and the team writing accelerated from there. A few days before they were scheduled to take the new material into the studio to record, Presley discovered that she was pregnant with her second child, a development that would affect promotion plans for the album. But the other Annies donât view this as an unwelcome disruption.
âI couldnât be more thrilled,â said Lambert, âNumber 1 because sheâs having a baby and she wants a baby. And Number 2, itâs perfect for our vibe.â
When Presley had to walk around in six-inch, leopard-print heels at a video shoot, her bandmates rubbed her feet between takes. On the Ryman stage, the three played up the humor of Monroe and a very pregnant Presley executing the scuffing dance steps of Appalachian clogging while Lambert scraped syncopated rhythms on a washboard.
The Annies reel off the markers of experience theyâve accumulated â solo careers, husbands and ex-husbands, kids and a baby on the way â the way other musicians might highlight career triumphs. Where their first two albums crackled with the irrepressible excitement of kindred spirits finding each other, âInterstate Gospel,â arriving further along on their journeys, sprinkles the escapades of their salty personas (âStop Drop and Roll One,â âSugar Daddyâ) among patient insights about profound disappointments.
The subdued doo-wop tune âMasterpieceâ expresses mortified awareness that an idealized image of a marriage is shattered. âCommissaryâ captures an excruciating display of restraint toward an incarcerated loved oneâs addiction. The elegantly bruised ballad âBest Years of My Lifeâ shows a woman coping with the realization that sheâs settled for a stable yet deeply unsatisfying life.
Patty Loveless, who had considerable success with her grounded approach to country neotraditionalism during the 1990s, likened the Anniesâ appeal to Loretta Lynnâs popularity with women in the â60s. âThey said, âHey, Loretta is speaking to us,ââ she said. âItâs almost like a conversation of friends, friends getting together and talking about issues.â
Annies songwriting sessions tend to take the form of sleepovers, with Presley and Monroe bunking at Lambertâs ranch outside of Nashville or riding her tour bus, where they commiserate and collaborate in a way that they find empowering. âI wouldnât be confident enough to say some of the things alone,â said Lambert, who has never been timid in her own work. She offered the example of âMilkman,â a wistful, fingerpicked reflection on a mother and daughterâs misunderstanding of each otherâs desires that opens with Lambert singing, âIf mama wouldâve loved the milkman, maybe she wouldnât judge me.â
In certain arrangements, the lead part is delegated to a single, harmony-supported voice, be it Lambertâs tart timbre or Monroe and Presleyâs willowy and reedy textures. In others, the verses are divvied up. Either way, the Annies share in the ownership of their lyricsâ disclosures.
They do, however, keep their work close to the vest until theyâre ready for their managers and label to hear it, so great is their belief that insulating their partnership from outside pressures is what keeps it fun. âI think we all hold this pretty sacred,â Monroe said, âand donât ever want it to be forced.â
