Testimonial

My 22 yr old daughter and I booked the Quad Adventure Tour from Split and everything went perfectly as planned, including communication with the company, pick up at the Split port, guide instruction on use of the vehicles, beautiful mountain scenery, local history lessons, and a wonderfully quaint BBQ lunch inside of a restored farmhouse…

I cannot possibly say enough about how fantastic they are! Stjepan treated us from the beginning as if we were part of his own family. He listened to exactly what we were looking for in our vacation and booked everything accordingly. Every day we were on the boat he would call our skipper to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and content. Pricing was all very fair and reasonable and I knew we were with someone we could trust.

Description

In about three and a half hours drive we arrive to Plitvice National Park, the largest, the oldest and most famous national park in Croatia , which was declared as UNESCO world heritage in 1979. (among the first in the world). Plitvice Lakes National Park is a special geological and hydrogeological phenomenon with natural and rich biodiversity. The oldest national park in Croatia represents a forested mountain area and a series of 16 crystal blue lakes. Lakes receive water from numerous rivers and streams, and they are connected by cascades and waterfalls. Travertine barriers, which were made in the period of ten thousand years ago are one of the fundamental features of the park. Vast forests, extraordinary beauty of lakes and waterfalls, flora and fauna, contrasting autumn colors, trails and wooden bridges form a remarkable and unforgettable beauty.

Upon arriving at Plitvice you will walk through woodland. The path takes you across Upper Lakes and then it is time for boat ride within the sound of the waterfalls to Lower Lakes . Get ready to walk across the lake on charming wooden paths, as well as an unforgettable thunder produced by Great Falls, 78 meters high waterfall.

The Plitvice National Park is so unique with its lakes colours and leafage. And although it is a long drive, experiencing the park and guide make the tour a great day worth it.

emilmw2017 Cheltenham, United Kingdom

We were given a lot of information by our guide while driving to Plitvice Park. Transport was very comfortable in their A/C Benz minibus with free wifi and USB charging slots. We walked around 7km with breaks and covered both the upper and lower lakes with boat ride and snack break. On our way back we stopped to taste a local food with extremely reasonable prices. We have spent a really enjoyable day and we really recommend this tour operator and wish them all the best as they provided us an excellent service.

Weighsone Wellington, New Zealand

Communication about where to go etc. was super helpful and everything went very smoothly. It was very nice to take a pictures around and still be able to hear guide speak since we were given a small radio receiver so we could stray about 60m from him and still hear him.

Monnnika203

We have had simply amazing tour with our guide, we can’t recommend her enough, she is so informative, funny and helpful. Since we did this tour in July on a 40°c day, we would recommend a different time of year. We will definitely recommend this tour to our friends!

Plitvice National Park is a must see place when you come to Croatia, indescribable beauty! We are really happy for we have booked this tour with this company. Our guide was so enthusiastic, personable, sweet and full of knowledge and great energy. We were offered to have a pick up and drop off convenience with a luxury bus with wi-fi, air condition and very spacious. Perfectly planned route with enough stops to grab a snack and visit restroom. Our guide did amazing job educating us about Croatian history and natural wonders. Blue and green crystal clear water accompanied by dozens of breath-taking waterfalls is simply breathtaking. I have only one suggestion to those taking the tour: the driver and tour guide spend 12 hours with you- don’t forget to tip them!

Brilliant tour and our tour guide Barty was excellent. He made our tour plus five, his humour was great.

june_p_0610 Los Angeles, California

We were picked up at our hotel promptly with spacious and air conditioned bus. Although it is a 3 hours long ride, it was very pleasant as we made rest stops and commentary along the way. Funny and cute guide Petra gave us a history lesson before our arrival to Plitvice lakes and she was very knowledgeable and informative about Croatia. We’ll definitely be back and I highly recommend breathtaking Plitvice Lakes tour.

navagale Edmonton, Canada

It was such a great decision to book this tour with this company! Our guide Petra was lovely and extremely knowledgeable about the waterfalls and it was perfect to be a part of a small froup so we could explore without missing anything. I definitely recommend booking with this company. The route through the waterfalls that we took was unbelievably breathtaking.

Administratively, the park falls within two counties: Lika-Senj (90.7%) and Karlovac (9.3%).

With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on 8 April 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s  first national park . The process of tufa formation, which results in the building of the tufa, or travertine, barriers and resulted in the creation of the lakes, is the  outstanding universal value , for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised on 26 October 1979 with their inscription onto the  UNESCO World Heritage List . In 1997, the boundaries of the national park were expanded, and today it covers an area just under 300 km 2 .

The park is primarily covered in forest vegetation, with smaller areas under grasslands. The most attractive part of the park – the lakes – cover just under 1% of the total park area.

The lake system is comprised of 16 named and several smaller unnamed lakes, cascading one into the next. Due to the geological substrate and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system has been divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The twelve lakes forming the Upper Lakes are: Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Burgeti and Kozjak. These lakes were formed on impermeable dolomite rock, and are larger, with more indented and gentler shores than the Lower Lakes. The Lower Lakes, consisting of the lakes Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića Brod, were formed in permeable limestone substrate, cut into a deep canyon with steep cliffs. The lakes end in the impressive waterfalls Sastavci, with the Korana River springing under the base of the falls.

The following is strictly prohibited in the National Park:

  • Collection of plant materials, or taking any “souvenirs” of natural origin
  • Feeding the animals
  • Swimming in the lakes
  • Disposal of litter along the trails or elsewhere, except in the garbage bins installed throughout the park
  • Straying off the marked trails

We recommend:

  • Wearing the appropriate clothing and footwear
  • Bringing adequate rain and sun protection (umbrella, raincoat; sunglasses, hat, sunscreen – depending on the season)
  • Check the weather forecast before coming to the park
  • Be sure to check the information listed on our website about the length of certain trails, to ensure to you have enough time to complete the desired tour

Whether you’re trying to beat the summer crowds and heat or hoping to chase the gushing waterfalls after a spring rain, Plitvice transforms with each season, creating an extraordinary experience for its visitors. Leave the cars and concrete behind – it’s your time to be one with nature.

Split to Plitvice Lakes drive

After we pick you up at one of our predefined locations with our luxury, air- conditioned bus, we’ll begin our drive to Plitvice Lakes.

Plitvice Tour

We arrive at Plitvice Lakes around 11:30 am. You’ll want to start by taking a deep breath – this park is famed for its sixteen lakes that are interconnected by cascades and waterfalls – and you get to enjoy them all.

Upper Lakes

The tour begins by exploring the series of twelve interconnected lakes called the Upper Lakes (Gornja Jezera), which are intertwined by breathtaking waterfalls and deposited travertine barriers that transform due to the strength of the water. The lakes also change color depending on the mineral composition of the water and the microorganisms living in them, as well as the angle at which the sun hits their surface. This process ensures that the Plitvice Lakes are continually evolving.

We’ll cross footbridges and natural trails that twirl through the grandeur of the park, while the sounds of spouting waterfalls wrap around us. You get the chance to be ultimately one with nature. And you won’t be sorry.

We’ll continue making our way through the fascinating landscape of the park until we reach the boat that will transport us to the Lower Lakes (Donja Jezera).

Lower Lakes

The Lower Plitvice Lakes boasts four lakes which are rooted in the limestone canyon. This magical world of natural limestone dams, which are built by deposits of calcium carbonate, even as the flow of water erodes them, is an ideal blend of unique geological features you’ll rarely find elsewhere on earth.

The climax of Plitvice tour is undoubtedly the Great Waterfall (Veliki slap), which is also known as the tallest waterfall in Croatia.

The impressive panorama of rocky cliffs and lush forests, coupled with the roar of the waterfalls reveals the natural beauty and magnificence of Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Traditional cuisine

After you’ve absorbed all that the Plitvice Lakes environment has to offer, you’ll have the chance to savor in the local cuisine at one of the traditional family restaurants. And if you’re not hungry? Don’t fret – this part of the tour is optional.

Fantastic Tour of Plitvice Lakes

Sandra was a fantastic guide for our tour. She was full of fun facts and very knowledgeable! The walk around Plitvice was a good 4 hours but really easy to manage for any level of fitness, and there were alternative routes for anyone who wanted to skip ahead. The lakes are stunning and really worth making the journey for, and I'm so glad we scheduled it as part of our stay in Split.

Great Experience!

We traveled at the end of March. The group was very compact, with 10-12 people. Comfortable bus, no queues at the entrance to the park or on the boat. Our guide was a charming and cheerful girl Sandra. She guided us confidently through the winding paths of the national park. Thank you for the professionalism and pleasant atmosphere during the trip!

Plitvice Lakes National Park- How Was Nature's Wonderland Created

Plitvice Lakes in Croatia developed over thousands of years, thanks to the calcium carbonate found in abundance in this area. This chemical compound is retained on the surface of stones and vegetation by the occurring bacteria and organisms, which contributes to its crystallization and sedimentation.

Calcium carbonate precipitated from the water and accumulating gradually, contributed to the formation of lakes along the river . The whole process continues to this day, and the created reservoirs continuously change their shape.

Due to the presence of calcium carbonate, the water has a charming turquoise color. Geologists estimate that this area may have been formed even 12,000 years ago .

Located in the central part of the country, about 240 km from Split , and with a total area of nearly 297 km², Plitvice Lakes National Park has so much to offer.

Plitvice Lakes National Park – Highlights

Admire the 16 famous large lakes of the area, and several smaller reservoirs that have formed. The difference in height between the lowest and highest lake is about 134 meters. Two groups can be distinguished: There are lakes with a dolomite substrate called Gornja Jezera ( Upper Lakes), and those formed in a limestone canyon, known as Donja Jezera ( Lower Lakes). The first group consists of 12 lakes and includes the two largest – Kozjak and Prošćansko.

✓ Waterfalls

Relish the numerous cascading waterfalls that flow from the mountains, giving the landscape its unparalleled charm. But the one that clearly stands out from the rest, is the so called Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall). With its 78 meters of height, it’s the highest waterfall throughout Croatia.

✓ Flora and Fauna

Marvel at the abundant vegetation of the park. The forests play a large role in the entire ecosystem, retaining water during dry periods and preventing its flow during wet periods. There are 11 forest communities here, one of which is Chorkova uvala , where trees reach up to a kilometer high! The richness of the local flora is reflected in countless endemic species like protected orchids and common St. John’s wort. The park is also home to many protected animal species like brown bears and wolves while otter, brown trout, crayfish live in water reservoirs. Attractions include numerous dens and caves created by karst waters.

The slow and steady shifting and dissolving of rock over thousands of years created these pools, and the soft limestone helped to create the chain-like barriers. Pair that with the cascades that trickle into them, the stalactites, channels, and moss, and you have an almost unreal prehistoric paradise.

One of the highlights of this magical tour is the panoramic boat ride, where you’ll be able to see hidden gems up close and personal. The attention to detail and organization from the staff only makes it an even better time.

This is a recommended itinerary for our Plitvice Lakes Private Tour:

Description

The Plitvice Lakes Private Tour starts in Split/Split area around 8 A. M. You will be picked up by your guide at the arranged meeting point.

The ride to NP Plitvice Lakes by a private car or an air-conditioned minivan takes about 2.5 hours. We will take the smooth A1 highway (the Dalmatina), benefiting from numerous potential comfort stops along the way and enjoying stunning views of the Dalmatian hinterland and the dramatic Velebit mountain .

The final 45 minutes of the journey will immerse you into the surprising landscape of the Lika region, famous for its potatoes, cheese, honey and sauerkraut.

The lush beech forest alongside of the road will signal you that you had arrived to the largest and oldest National Park in Croatia , an UNESCO heritage site since 1979. As your guide takes care of the entrance tickets, you will be able to have one last comfort stop before we get ready for the hike.

There are several possible routes to take in the park, and your guide will suggest the optimal one, taking several factors into account: available time, the weather, how crowded it is, your fitness level, your preferences. Depending on the chosen option, you may benefit from the panoramic “train” right away, taking you to the highest point of the terraced lakes, and then walk down to the lowest lake and the “Big Waterfall”.

Or, you can first embark on an electric boat and walk up to the top, and then take the panoramic train. You may want to avoid the panoramic train altogether and just stroll along the raised boardwalks. Whichever option you choose, you should aim to see both the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes. The so-called Upper Lakes consist of numerous emerald-green lakes , joined by countless waterfalls, surrounded by centenarian beech trees, spruces, firs, sycamores and junipers. Depending on the season, expect to see endemic orchids, gentians or cyclamens, as well as an extraordinary array of butterflies and dragonflies.

Unless it’s super cold or heavily raining, expect to take the so-called “long boat ride” across Lake Kozjak. The silent electric engines and open deck will offer intimate, unobstructed contact with nature. The boat ride itself takes some 20 minutes, perfect to have a sandwich or some snacks.

As we get off the boat, another comfort stop is available, as well as a chance to get coffee or an ice-cream, or even buy souvenirs .

A gentle stroll will finally take us to the so-called Lower Lakes, a magical sequence of turquoise lakes, with tall limestone cliffs hovering above them. And then the grand finale, the “Big Waterfall” . If you’re lucky, you may even see a rainbow there. This is also the most popular photo stop, so count on some waiting in line. Before departure, more photo stops will enable you to bid farewell to this awe-inspiring place.

An optional lunch in a popular local tavern might be just what you need after such an intense day. Lamb on the spit, grilled trout, gratinated crepes or vanilla ice-cream with pumpkin seed oil topping are just some of the items on their menu.

The journey back to Split will allow you to share your impressions with your co-travellers or with the driver, who will also be more than happy to share useful insights on Split and Croatia.

Important tips

Please keep in mind that the Plitvice Lakes are part of a mountainous region, subject to frequent weather changes . In other words, weather conditions in the Plitvice Lakes National Park may be much different than in the Split area. Even in summer it can get cold. Also, rain is common .

Therefore, dress appropriately. Take comfortable walking shoes (including an optional extra pair), warm socks (and an extra pair), a jacket or a raincoat and an umbrella, especially if rain is expected. Better be safe than sorry.

It is wise to check several weather forecasts before you go. The official NP Plitvice Lakes web site may offer additional information on the weather and conditions in the park.

Also, before you leave, your guide may give you additional tips on what to bring along and what to leave behind.

Of course, especially in summer, the weather may be as warm and dry as in Split. A hat, sunglasses and light sportswear may then be necessary. And of course, a bottle of water.

A private excursion is also possible for people with mobility difficulties, since the guide can adapt the entire route to the fitness level of the person or group.

Testimonials

My boyfriend and I took a private tour to Plitvice Lakes National Park this March and it was the highlight of our trip to Croatia. Our guide, Silvio, was very informative and super friendly. He picked us up from our hostel in the morning and then we were off to Plitvice. The drive was over two hours long and Silvio was great at explaining the history of Croatia with us. He told us a lot of really interested facts.

Once we arrived at the park, Silvio was great at leading us throughout all of the parts of the park that were open. He was super patient and was a great guide. After our amazing tour of the park, Silvio took us to an authentic restaurant on the way home and we got a huge meal that was very traditional. We definitely recommend this tour as well as Silvio! Thanks for the amazing memories!

This was the most amazing service. The guide was professional, helpful and very flexible and went out of his way to accommodate our preferences. I truly enjoyed this experience due to the thought and care put into the tour. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Thank you again for a well organized trip and unforgettable Plitvice Lakes
