Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance For Thailand

With its endless summers, glorious coastlines, notorious full moon parties and a million and one culinary treats to ‘thai’, it’s no wonder that Kiwi's are drawn to Thailand each year!

Whether you’re pining for ‘real’ Pad Thai, or you’re tempted by temples, Thailand caters for every taste. Can't wait to ride an elephant or cruise down the Mekong? Thailand has it all.

Now we don’t like to think of holidays as risk taking ventures, but the truth is, new environments, unfamiliar territory, foreign languages and unfamiliar foods can throw any traveller for a loop.

Though it’s cheap food and exotic culture may lure in many a tourist, Thailand’s appeal can also be its downfall. Thai tummy, moped mishap or picked pockets can turn a dream destination into a miserable memory.

Don’t get banged up abroad- make sure you pack travel insurance on your Thai adventure.

Compare travel insurance for Thailand

Whether you're a budget conscious backpacker, a sucker for the surf, or a worn-out parent seeking some family R&R, it pays to compare travel insurance policies to find the right cover for your trip.

A policy will cover you for unexpected accident or illness, lost luggage or theft, unforseen trip cancellation and much more.

When comparing policies, it's important to consider benefits, as well as costs…

How much does travel insurance for Thailand cost?

The cost of travel insurance can vary enormously! Say you’re 30 (ish) years old and you’re going to Thailand for a one-week holiday. Depending on your preferred level of cover, you can expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $80 on our site. To give you an idea, we’ve outlined the costs of a couple of policies below;

Basic policies-$30 – $50.  If you’re looking for real low cost cover then Webjet's Medical policy covers Unlimited medical and $5 million personal liability only. The excess you must pay towards a claim is a bit punchy at $500!!

Comprehensive policies -$50-$80.  1Cover's   comprehensive policy offers generous cover with a low excess of $100. Their policy includes unlimited medical, unlimited cancellation, $5 million personal liability, $15,000 luggage, $25,000 accidental death, $5,000 hospital cash, $25,000 personal disability, $5,000 for travel documents and $50,000 travel expenses. *All prices accurate at time of writing Jan 2017.

What will my policy cover?

If your Thai trip takes a downward turn for any of the following reasons, comprehensive cover will throw you a rope. You can expect cover for:

  • Medical : Food poisoning, drink spiking, malaria, and moped accidents are all scary possibilities in the Land of Smiles. Medical evacuation in Thailand can extremely costly and private hospitals often require a guarantee of payment before admission. Luckily, your policy will cover the exorbitant expense of overseas medical cover.
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits : Thailand is prone to a range of natural disasters including volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and floods. Travel insurance will cover unforeseen cancellations for events such as natural disasters, as well as accidents, hijackings, severe sickness or injury. Incidents that are beyond your control will usually be covered.
  • Luggage and personal effects : Theft is common in Thailand, particularly in popular backpacker destinations such as Khao San Road in Bangkok or the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan. In addition to a rise in motorcycle handbag theft, it’s essential to keep your wits about you. Your travel insurance will reimburse you for lost, stolen or damaged luggage. Comprehensive cover also includes cover for theft of cash and travel documents too.
  • Personal liability:   If you injure someone or are held accountable for damaged property in Thailand the consequences could be disastrous, particularly when you are unfamiliar with local laws and regulations. In such an event, your policy will cover your liability costs to a degree.
  • Additional extras:  Each policy varies but look out for top notch extras such as cover for rental vehicle excess, permanent disability, loss of income, cover for kennels and catteries (if you’re delayed home to your fluffy friends) and more.

What will my policy not cover?

  • Riding risky:  Thai roads were recently declared the second ‘most dangerous in the world.’ Tragically, 80 lives are lost each day on the notoriously dangerous streets and plenty of those include tourists. If you’ve never ridden a scooter or motorbike, be warned that Thailand is not the place to learn! Keep in mind that your insurer will not cover you if you are found riding without a current New Zealand license (valid in the country you are in) or a helmet.
  • Fighting follies:  Fancy yourself a round or two in the ring in the birthplace of Muay Thai Boxing? A few bad blows could put a dent in your holiday budget (not to mention your morale)!  Any medical attention you require as a result of "professional" or dangerous martial arts wouldn't be covered.  Watch out for those nasty left hooks!
  • Unattended items : Keep a strong hold over all your belongings as leaving your stuff unsupervised will not be covered for. That also means not leaving your stuff with your brand new hostel chums.
  • Being intoxicated : Whether your drink of choice is a Singha or Mekong Whisky Bucket, all claims related directly to alcohol will not be paid. So have fun in moderation! Also the possession of even small quantities of "soft drugs" for recreational purposes can result in lengthy jail sentences. And when was a drunken tattoo ever a good idea? If you wake up and find yourself with a permanent Thai souvenir we apologise in advance. Any medical expenses on account of a dodgy tattoo expenses may not be paid.
  • Terrorism and travel warnings : The Smarttraveller website warns tourists to 'exercise a high degree of caution' in Thailand due to civil unrest and threat of terrorism.  While the chances of getting caught up in an act of terrorism are small, it’s still a good idea to keep up to date with travel advisories on sites like  safetravel.govt.nz.   Generally travelling against DO NOT TRAVEL warnings issued from the New Zealand will jeopardize your cover.
  • High risk activities:  Adventure activities are plentiful in Thailand. From scuba diving in Koh Tao, ziplining in Chang Mai, white water rafting Phang Na, or even elephant riding in the north...adrenaline junkies are sure spoilt for choice! But watch out, as participating in particularly risky activities  such as climbing (where ropes are needed), cliff jumping or sky diving may not be covered by your policy.  Be sure to scan your policy’s small print to check out which of your preferred heart pounding activities are covered.
  • Pre-existing conditions :  Medical conditions  that exist before you travel are generally not covered, but it pays to check. You can sometimes pay a bit extra to get some conditions covered. Check your policy wording to see what conditions are covered automatically, and which ones require a medical assessment first.
  • Unreported items:  You need to report theft or loss to the relevant authority ASAP (and your travel insurance provider) within 24 hours.

How to save on travel insurance in Thailand

  • Choose your destination wisely –  You might be able to save yourself a few Baht by finding an insurer that classes Thailand in its own price bracket, rather than grouped under Asia.
  • Consider how often you travel  - If you travel a few times per year, you could save by purchasing an  annual multi-trip policy  rather than purchasing a policy each time you take off.
  • Combine policies  - If travelling with your family or a companion, a  joint policy  is often cheaper than purchasing separately.
  • Increase your excess  - Most insurers allow you to lower your premium by opting to pay higher excess in the instance that you need to make a claim.
  • Shop around  - You'll be amazed at how much travel insurance quotes can vary. Offers by travel agents or airlines usually have commissions added on. In fact, you can save up to 50% by shopping around, so it pays to buy your travel insurance direct. Doing your comparison online will allow you to compare loads of quotes in seconds. Yippee

Thailand fast facts

Capital :Bangkok

Currency: Thai baht

Country code: +66

Language: Thai

"Thailand": Means land of the free. Thailand’s countless coastal islands are commonly preceded with the word Ko, meaning ‘island.’ For instance, it would be correct to refer to refer to ‘Phi Phi island’ as ‘Ko Phi Phi.

Culture: Bangkok's Grand Palace and Wat Prakeaw (Thailand’s most sacred Buddhist temple) are not to be missed. Thailand’s postcard worthy floating markets lure in thousands of hungry tourists while the UNESCO world heritage site of Ayutthaya Heritage City is noted for its vast, ancient culture.

Not to be missed: If you're up for a bumpy overnight adventure, hop on board a sleeper trains to the lush sanctuary of Chang Mai. Nestled in to the hills of Northern Thailand, the vibrant city offers up a wide array of activities from bamboo rafting to elephant riding, night markers and ancient temples. Diving buffs can’t miss the spectacular sea life of Koh Tao, while Koh Phi Phi’s breathtaking island beauty and non-stop party atmosphere can draw in over 10 0000 visitors a day. Last but not least, a trip to Thailand would not be complete without a stop in Bangkok. A city known for its contrasts; the hustle and bustle of Bangkok can be polarising- it’s breathlessly busy, consumerist driven, profoundly poor in parts but rich in an ancient, regal culture.

Nightlife: One of Thailand’s greatest drawcard is its thriving, diverse nightlife. Despite its sleazy reputation, Thailand’s party scene is hardly limited to strip clubs and go-go bars. You can watch the sun go down with a few beers at a beach-side bungalow; party with the masses at Ko Phang Ngan’s full moon parties or sip cocktails with trendy young things at a hip Bangkok bar. No matter what your taste, there’s something for every type of party animal.

Food & drink : If you like you food packed with flavour, you’re in luck. Much like its welcoming culture, Thailand’s cuisine is always warm, inviting and addictive! Spicy, salty, sweet and sour, every Thai dish relies heavily on its core ingredients; chilli, garlic, lemongrass, palm sugar, fish sauce and lime juice. Many swear that Thai street food is amongst the best and cheapest in the world. A few pennies at a street side stall can buy you the best pad thai or satay skewer you’ve ever had. So how to beat the dreaded food poisoning so many tourists fall prey to? It’s a tricky one but the following tips can keep you food safe in Thailand;

  • Only eat at the most popular food carts, the turn-over rate is higher
  • Only chose meals cooked in front of you and avoid pre-cooked food canteens
  • Stay wary of uncooked dishes such as salads and only drink bottled water
  • Wash unpeeled fruit with bottled water
  • Use good judgement, for instance, steer clear of a stall that looks grimy and unclean.

Beaches: Sandy shores and turquoise blue waters are not in short supply in Thailand. Cetainly Phi Phi Island’s glorious coastlines are some of the country’s most popular. After Hollywood blockbuster The Beach, was shot on Maya Bay (one of Phi Phi’s most beautiful beaches) tourism to the area shot up. If crowds aren’t your thing you could head to Railay beach in Krabi, Kata Noi, Long Beach or Nai harn...and you won't be disappointed.

How to Buy Thailand Travel Insurance from New Zealand

Legal Advisor

New Zealand should be commended on how it handled the Covid-19 crisis. They were one of the first countries to impose travel restrictions which helped curb the spread of Covid in the early days of the pandemic.

Like Thailand, New Zealand was also one of the last countries to remove its restrictions. Both countries share a philosophy of protecting their citizens while knowing their countries rely heavily on tourism. It is a fine line to walk as the pandemic winds down.

Kiwis love to travel the world and are loved well wherever they go. They are one of the closest people to Thais with a reputation for being laid back. But because Kiwis love to get out and about, and have a lot of visitors themselves, they understand the importance of protection when abroad.

Covid gave insurance a bad name. No Covid Insurance, no travel. Simple. But things are looking up, because from July 1st, 2022, New Zealanders no longer need to show proof of Covid Insurance to visit one of their favorite countries.

Like New Zealand, Thailand is an outdoor country. Thailand shares New Zealand’s natural beauty, but it is the polar opposite. The culture, food, and landscape are as different as it gets, yet Kiwis will appreciate the change of scenery. For those NZ travelers chasing something new, Thailand is the perfect holiday destination.

There are many adventures to have, but unfortunately, when outdoors or abroad, things can happen. This is why Travel Insurance is important. It is the safety net that saves you from having to worry about unexpected costs. Travel Insurance mattered before Covid, and will certainly matter after Covid.

Travel Insurance for New Zealand Travelers

If you have ever traveled overseas, or considered leaving NZ, you know things can happen that are out of your control. Luggage is lost, flights are delayed, accidents occur and personal injury is possible. You cannot control these things, but you can protect yourself so they don’t disrupt your holiday.

Travel Insurance is not Covid Insurance. It is much more. It provides cover against incidents like:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Lost luggage

It is important to know that, unlike in New Zealand, foreign visitors cannot receive free medical care in Thailand. If you have an accident or suffer a personal injury, you will need to pay any medical expenses. If you lose luggage, or a flight is delayed, you will have other costs. Depending on the severity, this could be thousands of dollars.

Because medical care is free in New Zealand, Travel Insurance is often overlooked when heading overseas. But Travel Insurance gives you peace of mind while abroad, and using a trusted company in your destination country makes it easy.

AXA Thailand: AXA Sawasdee Thailand

AXA Sawasdee Thailand is a well-known and respected insurance company in Thailand that caters to travelers from around the world. Their policies are straightforward and trusted by Thai authorities and medical institutions.

Benefits of AXA Sawasdee Thailand

It is possible to organize Travel Insurance through your home country, but there are many advantages to using an international company that is based in the country you are visiting.

Thai Approved

Using a local insurance company that is respected and trusted can simplify processes in the unfortunate event you need to make a claim. AXA staff are familiar with medical institutions in the country and are trained to deal directly with these institutions. AXA staff speak the Thai language and are familiar with local laws.

Using an insurance company from your local country may present issues internationally, or have certain exclusions when making a claim in Thailand. AXA Sawasdee is designed for Thailand.

Offered Packages of Travel Insurance

Many travelers have different levels of comfort for traveling and protection. AXA provides multiple packages to cater to any traveler’s needs. Kiwi travelers can choose between 2 insurance packages for their trip:

  • AXA Insurance Package 1
  • AXA Insurance Package 2

Each package offers a different level of cover and claim amounts.

No Waiting Period

Many insurers will have a 14-day waiting period for their conditions. This means that you either need to purchase your insurance weeks in advance or risk not being covered until the day you finish your vacation.

Because AXA understands New Zealanders want to feel safe from the moment they land in Thailand, they have removed any 14-day waiting period, so visitors are protected from day one.

Choice of Policy Duration

Many insurance companies offer limited choices for the length of their policies.

Holiday makers want to know they are covered until they safely land home, so visitors from New Zealand can select the duration of their AXA Insurance policy.

Whether you stay for 15, 30, 60, 90, or 180 days, you are covered while visiting. If you are looking at Thailand as a potential relocation or long-stay destination, AXA has coverage for those looking long-term.

AXA knows plans change, so if you decide to extend your holiday you don’t have to worry about canceling and reapplying. Just call them and extend your existing policy.

Days in Quarantine and Covid Diagnosis

If you are diagnosed with Covid while in Thailand, AXA Sawasdee Thailand covers days spent in quarantine. If you require medical attention while in quarantine, AXA Sawasdee Thailand can assist with organizing professional medical care and emergency transport.

Though many insurance companies now include Covid cover as standard practice, some companies will place exclusions if a traveler is diagnosed as Asymptomatic. This is not the case with AXA Sawasdee. You can make a claim on your policy if you are diagnosed as Symptomatic or Asymptomatic.

24/7 Dependable Service

AXA Sawasdee Thailand’s insured travelers have access to their 24/7 helpline. Any time of the day, helpful staff are available to address your concerns and offer assistance.

They pride themselves on the quick service you can depend on. If you need the insurance policy and certificate quickly, AXA Sawasdee Thailand can do that.

Certificate of Insurance

Foreign visitors are no longer required to provide proof that they have insurance when in Thailand. But in the unlikely event that a New Zealander needs to make a claim or provide insurance documents to a doctor or hospital, the last thing they want is to be searching through a multi-page policy.

NZ travelers will receive a convenient 1-Page Certificate of Insurance when they purchase Travel Insurance with AXA Sawasdee Thailand. The certificate contains all relevant policy details and can save time and frustration in a stressful situation.

You can get a full refund of the insurance premium if the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulates do not accept your AXA Sawasdee Thailand insurance. You must provide proof that the policy was not accepted by the Embassy, e.g. a web page of the Embassy listing the requirement, or a leaflet with the Embassy header/logo.

How to Buy Travel Insurance from New Zealand

Get a quote and buy your AXA Sawasdee Thailand COVID insurance online. They make the process simple and you will receive your Travel Insurance certificate within minutes.

Thailand Travel Insurance Plan 2

  • Go to the AXA Sawasdee Thailand website and apply.
  • Pick between the 2 packages: AXA Insurance Package 1 or Package 2 .
  • Pay for your policy.
  • Receive the insurance policy and certificate by email moments after your payment.
  • You can then print your 1-Page certificate if you like to carry a hard copy.

Tips to Make Sure your Insurance is Approved

Before traveling, it is always best to check the details of your policy. You want to make sure that:

  • Incidents relating to COVID-19 are not excluded.
  • Your policy covers your entire stay in Thailand.
  • Your details are correct.

Thailand is once again opening its arms to Kiwi visitors. New experiences are waiting for new and seasoned travelers alike. The world is returning to normal and New Zealanders can get back into the world and enjoy the beauty, relaxation, and exotic food that is just different enough to make a holiday worthwhile. Safe travel is everyone’s responsibility and having the right cover will allow you to kick back and enjoy yourself.

Travel insurance for Thailand

From the tropical beaches of Phuket to the bustling streets of Bangkok, Thailand has so much to offer to travellers of all tastes. The country enjoys a reputation for serene landscapes and exciting cities in equal measure, and has long been one of Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destinations.

What does my insurance cover in Thailand?

Our International Comprehensive policy provides affordable, comprehensive cover for your international holiday. When you protect yourself with our International Comprehensive cover, you also gain access to our worldwide Emergency Assistance team, who offer round-the-clock advice 365 days of the year.  Our International Comprehensive insurance includes cover for:

  • Unlimited medical and evacuation expenses that arise due to unexpected events while on your journey
  • Cancellation fees and lost deposits – increase your cover depending on the cost of your journey
  • Damaged or lost baggage
  • Personal items if they are stolen or damaged
  • Rental vehicle excess should you have an accident
  • Emergency dental treatment
  • Funeral costs

Cover for natural disasters

Unfortunately, Thailand is no stranger to devastating natural events, like the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 that killed thousands. More recently, serious flash flooding and typhoons have claimed the lives of thousands more, including international travellers. You must make sure it’s still safe to travel to your destinations by checking for travel advisories on the Smartraveller.gov.au  website. You need to check this when you buy your insurance, again before you start your journey, and before leaving for each new destination.

Your policy may be affected if the travel advisory on the Smartraveller.gov.au  website is ‘Do not travel’ or ‘Reconsider your need to travel’.

Cover for laptops, phones and cameras

Valuable electronics are common victims of misadventure overseas. Whether it’s being stung by a cunning thief in a Bangkok market, or suffering an unexpected slip into the resort pool, your electronics can face danger from all sides. Our International Comprehensive policy covers you for lost, stolen or damaged personal items, so you can focus on enjoying your holiday knowing that you’re protected from the unexpected.

What you need to know

This page includes some information about our products but, as with all insurance policies, terms and conditions apply. For our terms and conditions (including information about exclusions, excesses and sub limits) we recommend you read the relevant Financial Services Guide (FSG), Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and  Target Market Determination (TMD)  to ensure our travel insurance products are right for you.

If you are planning international travel at this time, please read our COVID-19 related travel advice here , alongside our destination specific travel advice below.

Do not travel

Do not travel to the southernmost provinces along the Thailand-Malaysia border, including Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and Southern Songkhla due to ongoing politically-motivated and criminal violence, which occurs on an almost daily basis. The Thai Government has warned tourists not to travel to these areas (level 4 of 4).

Exercise increased caution

Exercise increased caution elsewhere in Thailand due to the potential for civil unrest and threat of terrorism (level 2 of 4).

Political Tension/Civil unrest The political situation in Thailand can be unpredictable. In recent years, Thailand has experienced regular large-scale political demonstrations and unrest in Bangkok and other cities in Thailand.  Violent incidents in the vicinity of these demonstrations have resulted in serious injuries.

New Zealanders throughout Thailand are advised to avoid any protests, demonstrations, and large gatherings, as even those intended to be peaceful have the potential to quickly turn violent.

New Zealanders throughout Thailand are advised to exercise due caution and monitor the media to stay informed of developments. We recommend adhering to any instructions issued by the local authorities.

New Zealanders in Thailand should be wary of making political statements in public and on social media or sharing articles online that could been seen as portraying Thailand negatively or making accusations about individuals. There are also strong ‘lese majeste’ laws in place which make it a criminal offence to criticise or defame the monarchy in any form, including on social media. These laws are strictly enforced in Thailand and it is strongly advised that New Zealanders in Thailand refrain from making any public statements about the monarchy including posting, commenting or liking items about the monarchy on social media.

Terrorism There is an ongoing threat of terrorism in Thailand, including in Bangkok and Phuket. Previous incidents involving explosive devices have occurred in Bangkok and other popular tourist destinations, including Phuket and Koh Samui.

In August 2019, several small explosions occurred in various locations in Bangkok resulting in some injuries. In August 2016, there were multiple explosions in Thailand. These occurred in a number of tourist areas, including Hua Hin, Phuket, Phang Nga, Trang, and Surat Thani and resulted in casualties.  On 17 August 2015, an explosion near the Erawan Shrine in central Bangkok killed at least 20 people and injured many more. Further incidents are possible.

New Zealanders are advised to exercise a high degree of personal security awareness throughout Thailand. Particular care should be taken in public and commercial areas. Possible terrorism targets include (but are not limited to) landmarks or places known to be frequented by expatriates or foreign tourists, public transport facilities, hotels, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, tourist resorts, shopping areas, markets, banks, embassies, and places of worship. Thai authorities have previously warned of the possibility of attacks to coincide with symbolic dates or holidays.

Local travel There is an ongoing threat of violence in the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Pattani and Songkhla. Bombings and shootings are common in these provinces and over 6,500 people have been killed in an ongoing insurgency since 2004. Foreigners have been caught up in this violence in the past.

Sporadic conflict near the Thai-Myanmar border occurs between the Myanmar military and armed opposition groups as well as between Thai security forces and armed criminal groups (such as drug traffickers). Armed clashes may result in border closures at short notice.

Crime Petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing, especially from thieves on motorbikes or in open transport like tuk tuks, occurs in Thailand and is common in tourist areas, in larger cities and on public transport. We advise New Zealanders to be alert to their surroundings at all times and take steps to safeguard and secure their personal belongings.

Drink spiking has been reported in tourist destinations around Thailand, with both male and female victims.  Be careful about taking drinks from strangers and at bars, clubs and parties, or leaving your drinks unattended, particularly in Phuket and Krabi provinces, around Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Pattaya and at the Full Moon party on Koh Pha Ngan, where drug related sexual assaults have been reported.

Transport Safety Road safety is a significant issue in Thailand. Road accidents occur frequently, often causing death or serious injury. Motorcyclists and pedestrians are most at risk. Be extra vigilant during holiday periods, including Western New Year (January 1) and Songkran (Thai New Year, mid-April), as drunk driving and accidents are much more frequent during these periods. Do not drink and drive, or drink and ride. If you are walking, use overhead walkways whenever possible. Consider carefully the safety standards of any vehicle and any accompanying equipment, such as helmets, you may hire.

Passenger boat accidents have occurred, often due to overloading or poor maintenance of vessels. Consider carefully the safety standards of any vessel and do not board any vessel which appear overloaded.

General travel advice New Zealanders travelling or living in Thailand should have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place that includes provision for medical evacuation by air.

It is a legal requirement to carry a form of identification with you at all times, that proves your legal status in Thailand. Failure to produce your passport or a photocopy of relevant pages could result in a fine or arrest.

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe and can include lengthy imprisonment or fines.

In January 2018, Thai authorities introduced a smoking ban on beaches in certain tourist areas, including in Petchaburi, Pattaya, Phuket, Prachuap Kirikan, Chon Buri and Songkhla provinces. Those caught smoking in non-designated areas could be fined or face imprisonment.

Making a critical or defamatory comment about the Royal Family, including on social media is punishable by a prison sentence in Thailand.  Travellers should maintain respectful behaviour around all images of the Royal Family, including on money.

Exercise caution in relation to offers of employment that appear ‘too good to be true’.  There have been a number of cases where victims have been trafficked into online scamming or other fraudulent activity, with poor pay and living conditions, restrictions on movement, and the possibility of severe mistreatment.

Thailand has been experiencing poor air quality and high PM2.5 levels in urban areas and Bangkok in particular. This may aggravate bronchial, sinus or asthma conditions. Children, the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions may be especially affected. Latest reports on air quality levels can be obtained from the World Air Quality Index website.

New Zealanders in Thailand are encouraged to register their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
