An 11 Day Scotland Island Hopping Itinerary You Should Steal

June 27, 2016 by Silvia 11 Comments

Catriona and I packed a lot into our 11 days in Scotland. But one of the great things about the Hebrides is that most of the islands are so small, even after only a couple of days on one I could leave feeling like I had really seen it.

I mean, there’s only so far you can drive into a new island’s unknown until you find yourself circling back towards a place you’ve already explored, at which point you’ll be all “oh hey, I already know this place! I guess I’m basically a local now.”

Or something like that.

And with such compact areas for us to explore, we happily didn’t need to pick and choose places to see, but instead could just set out with little or no plan for the day. My favorite way of traveling!

What we did need, however, was a perfectly crafted itinerary for getting to all the islands we wanted to see within our short time frame. And luckily for me, by the time I accepted Catriona’s invite for this trip she had basically done all of the planning already.

So for those of you who were wondering how we managed to see so much during our island hopping trip around the Hebrides, this was our 11-day itinerary (because if your boss is willing to give you 10 days off of work, she’ll probably be okay with 11 days too, right?):

Table of Contents

Scotland Island Hopping Itinerary

Day 1: glasgow to islay.

09:15 – 12:33  bus from  Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station to Kennacraig Ferry Terminal   £17.60

13:00 – 14:55  ferry from Kennacraig Ferry Terminal to Port Eskaig, Islay   £6.50

We rented a car for 48 hours ( £84 ) which we picked up at the ferry terminal, and left at the airport when we departed Islay.

Day 2: Islay

You can read about what we did on Islay here .

Day 3: Islay to Glasgow

16:50 – 17:25 Loganair flight to Glasgow  £79

While Islay and Tiree are neighbors, there’s no ferry between them, so we had to go back to Glasgow to get to Tiree (locals told us that we could have also asked around for a fishing boat headed to Tiree).

The flight was late enough in the day that we could still squeeze a couple of visits to whisky distilleries in before leaving Islay, and then we spent the night at the Normandy Hotel at the Glasgow airport before catching another early morning flight. Check current prices for the Normandy Hotel

Day 4: Glasgow to Tiree

08:50 – 09:50 Loganair flight to Tiree   £66

This was one of my favorite flights ever (and I’ve taken a lot of flights!). The plane was teeny tiny and the views were amazing.

We stayed at the Millhouse Hostel on Tiree and rented bicycles + hitchhiked to get around. Check current prices for the Millhouse Hostel

Day 5: Tiree

You can read about what we did on Tiree here .

Day 6: Tiree to Oban

17:40 – 21:30  ferry to Oban   £10.30

In Oban we stayed at Dunheanish Guest House which has an amazing view over the city and harbor and is also so beautiful inside. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a nice guest house in Oban! Check current prices for the Dunheanish Guest House

Day 7: Oban to Mallaig

12:11 – 17:43 train from Oban to Mallaig (via Crianlarich)   £32.10

This is one of the world’s most famous (and beautiful) train rides. You can read more about it (including a video!) here .

Day 8: Mallaig to Skye

9:30 – 10:10 ferry from Mallaig to Armadale (Skye)   £5

We stayed at the award-winning Skywalker Hostel, which was in a perfect location and a really fun place to meet other travelers, while still offering private rooms. Check current prices for Skywalker Hostel

You can read about what we did on Skye here .

Day 9: Skye to Harris

9:40 – 11:20  ferry from Uig (Skye) to Tarbert (Harris)  £6.10

You can read about what we did on Harris here .

We stayed with a friend, but I’ve heard excellent things about the Hotel Hebrides, if you’re looking for a nice hotel on the Isle of Harris. Check current rates and availability here

Day 10: Lewis

You can read about what we did on Lewis here .

Again, I stayed with a friend here, but she recommended The Dragonfly as a wonderful (and affordable) hotel option in Stornoway. Check current rates and availability here

Day 11: Lewis –> Home

There’s an airport on Stornoway as well as a ferry from Stornoway to Ullapool on mainland Scotland that takes two and a half hours.

If you have more time…

There were a lot of islands I missed and would have loved to have visited if I had had more time, but there are a few places in particular I would have loved to have included.

Jura is just a few miles northeast of Islay and about the same size, but it only has a population of 200 people – and about 3,500 deer! It’s also where George Orwell completed  1984 .

Barra is famous for its beautiful beaches, and its airport, which also happens to be a beach! Flights land on the beach, but only at low tide – during high tide the runway disappears beneath the water.

Fort William

The train ride between Oban and Mallaig was through some of the most beautiful scenery I saw while traveling in Scotland, and I would especially love to have had time to better explore the area around Fort William.

I recently discovered Clickstay, a website for finding holiday villa and apartment rentals, and they have the dreamiest little farmhouse outside of Fort William. I would love to gather a bunch of friends there for a week and just relax in the Highlands.

Okay, I know Skye is already on this itinerary, but for such a large island with so many sites, one night isn’t really enough time there. If I had more time I would definitely extend the stay on Skye to at least two or three nights.

What to pack for island hopping through Scotland

Scottish weather is unpredictable! I packed a lot of cold weather clothing for this trip, because Scotland, but then it ended up being sunny and incredibly hot for most of the trip. So you’ll want to bring a good variety of clothing, so that you’re prepared for whatever Scottish weather might throw at you.

Probably most important, though, is rain gear – you don’t want the weather to stop you from exploring the islands. I swear by these rain pants . Here are a few of my other top packing essentials for island hopping in Scotland:

What a great itinerary Silvia!

I love Scotland and have been many times, but I still keep going back!

I’ve been to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Islay, and the Isle of Skye. I’ve been to the Isle of Skye twice and Glasgow and Edinburgh many times. I always spend about about three or four days in each destination, but if I had more time, I could possibly spend a week lol!

If I ever went back to the UK to live. It would be in Scotland!

July 7, 2016 at 8:16 pm

Ugh I wish I could have spent months exploring Scotland instead of 11 days. Will have to find my way back!

Wow! Having agreed that the Scottish Isles shall be our “grand trip” at some point…I have spent endless hours researching the best possible itinerary given our tastes and of course the time needed to do it right. Not an easy task. But now I stumbled onto your site–and I LOVE this. Thanks for the best ideas yet.

Thankyou so much. My wife and I are researching this trip and now feel better informed about: – what to include, and – how long to spend in the various places. Love both the photos and text. Re our trip, I’m going to follow your example and create a similar record of our trip. Before attempting this, I’ll read your blog and check out other trips on your website for inspiration. Thanks for inspiring me to be much more ambitious. And thanks again for the great info. Brian

Thank you for sharing all this info

Is there any reason you didn’t rent a car for the whole journey instead ? Would that be more convenient ?

Embark in Glasgow (Greenock)

Start in Scotland's stylish city of culture

A former industrial powerhouse, Glasgow has reinvented itself as a cultural hot spot, packed with museums, galleries and parks. Discover the splendid Art Nouveau architecture of Charles Rennie Mackintosh before your expedition cruise begins.

You’ll embark in Glasgow (Greenock) where MS Spitsbergen, one of our smaller vessels purpose-built for close-up exploration, will be waiting for you. Get to know the ship before meeting the Expedition Team – your guides for the adventure ahead. Enjoy your first onboard dinner as we set sail.

Beautiful Isle of Arran

Enjoy wildlife spotting on Arran

Welcome to the Isle of Arran, known for its heather-cloaked landscapes. Why not try a hike with views of the craggy peaks of Goat Fell and see if you can spot Scotland’s ‘Big Five’: the Golden Eagle, red deer, red squirrel, otter and harbour seal, all of which can be found on Arran.

Explore the woodland and gardens of Brodick Castle, and marvel at the Neolithic treasures and huge upright slabs at the Machrie Moor Stone Circle. Your stop wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Isle of Arran Distillery and a taste of their distinctive malt.

scottish island hopping tours

Islay's whisky and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on 'Whisky Island'

Islay, the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’, is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, with rugged uplands and coastline . The island is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts – but that's far from the only reason to visit.

Islay is a wildlife haven, home to over 200 species of birds – including oystercatchers, gannets and Golden Eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a 'wee dram' from one of these famous and historic whisky producers, including Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Sustainable Isle of Gigha

Discover a slice of paradise in the Hebrides

Today our Scottish isles cruise takes us to tiny Gigha (pronounced ‘Gee-a’), a little sandy slice of paradise in the Hebrides. The island is community-owned, bought by its 163 residents in 2002, and has a sustainable local economy. Why not try some of its seafood, such as Gigha halibut and oysters.

At only seven miles long, the only way to get around Gigha is on foot or by hiring a bike. Visit the woodland gardens of Achamore House and admire the colourful rhododendrons. Then explore white sandy coves and the turquoise waters along the coast, such as the Bàgh Rubha Ruaidh and Bàgh na Dòirlinne beaches.

scottish island hopping tours

The spirit of Iona

See Iona's sacred abbey and Fingal's Cave on Staffa

Your adventure continues to Iona, off the coast of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. You can visit the restored 6th century abbey, one of Scotland's oldest and most sacred Christian pilgrimage sites. Or enjoy a hike with the Expedition Team up Dùn I for breathtaking views of St Columba's Bay – and take a sip from the 'Well of Eternal Youth'.

We’ll also sail to the Treshnish Isles – home to Atlantic Puffins, razorbills and grey seals. At nearby Fingal's Cave, marvel at the hexagonal basalt columns, superb natural acoustics and mesmerising, coloured waters.

Expedition day

Explore the tranquil southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides

Today, we’ll explore the southernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides.

We’ll attempt a nature landing on the white sand beaches of Vatersay, located at the beginning of the renowned Hebridean Way. The mighty wind and waves of the Atlantic have carved sheltered harbours here, allowing settlements to arise as far back as the Neolithic period. Explore the rich history and admire the tranquil beauty of this tiny island, before heading south to remote Mingulay.

Abandoned by its resident population a century ago, Mingulay is home to some of the largest bird colonies in the Hebrides. Puffins, guillemots, fulmars, kittiwakes and more make their nests across the island, including on the towering Carnan Cliffs, a protected breeding area. If conditions allow, we’ll take our small expedition boats around the island on the lookout for some of these magnificent birds.

We travel next to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, home of the famous Harris Tweed cloth. We'll visit Gothic-style Lews Castle, with its trails and fantastic views. Don’t miss 'Scotland's Stonehenge', the 5,000-year-old Callanish Standing Stones, and Dùn Carloway, the best-preserved Iron Age broch in Scotland.

We'll also cruise the wild and beautiful Shiant Isles, a tiny archipelago set in the Minch Strait. Isles of beauty

Get close to dramatic scenery and wonderful wildlife on Skye and Eigg

We’ll sail to Loch Scavaig on the Isle of Skye, where dramatic scenery surrounds us. “The wildest scene in the Highlands” – that's how the Victorian poet Lord Tennyson described Loch Coruisk and the surrounding craggy peaks of the Cuillin Mountains. We'll put on our hiking boots to explore the loch with the Expedition Team.

Our next stop is the remote Isle of Eigg, home to incredible wildlife. You might spot Golden and White-Tailed Eagles, Red Throated Divers, stonechats, seals, dolphins and porpoises. Stroll along the white sands of Laig Bay to the quartz beach where the sand sings, or hike to the top of An Sgùrr.

Mull’s Colourful Fishing Port

Get ready for the dreamy beauty of the Sound of Mull

Brightly coloured Georgian houses line the waterfront in the picturesque fishing port of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. Learn about the local heritage at the Mull Museum, try a dram of local whisky, stroll around the loch in Aros Park or pay a visit to the Baliscate Standing Stones.

The Isle of Mull is a magnet for birders. It has the highest breeding density of Golden Eagles in Europe, and White-tailed Eagles can often be seen soaring above the coast. We may also explore Loch Sunart, a Marine Protected Area known for otters, dolphins and porpoises.

Colonsay birds and blooms

Immerse yourself in unspoilt island beauty

Take a coastal walk on the Isle of Colonsay and enjoy breathtaking views from Kiloran Bay and Plaide Mhòr. Or if you’re lucky enough to be in a kayak, you may catch sight of whales, porpoises and dolphins.

Flora thrives on Colonsay, with over 400 species of plants present. You’ll see some of them in the woodland gardens of Colonsay House. It's a paradise for birdwatchers, with choughs, Red Northern Divers, eagles, fulmars, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and shags among the birds you can spot. Be sure to listen out for the rattle of the elusive corncrake.

Back to Glasgow

Your island-hopping odyssey comes to an end in Scotland’s biggest city

Your adventure to the wild Scottish Isles ends back in Glasgow (Greenock).

Lying on the shores of the Firth of Clyde with views across to the high hills of Argyll, Glasgow’s impressive fishing and shipping heritage is manifest in the Victorian architecture of the west end of town. It’s well worth exploring this area some more if you have time before you head home.

Touring scottish islands by car.

We’ve previously written travel tips on how to plan a 7 day Scottish Islands tour itinerary .

With the following travel tips, we are going to give you the stuff you need to know about how to use the ferry services in Scotland.

Ferry Operators:

The first thing you need to know is that Caledonian MacBrayne operates almost every major ferry route to the islands on the west coast of Scotland. Indeed, their monopoly on the west coast is so famous that it has been celebrated in a well-known rhyme

The Earth belongs unto the Lord, And all that it contains. Except the Kyles and the Western Isles, For they are all MacBrayne's.

CalMac Ferry at Port Askaig

If sailing to Orkney you have the choice of Northlink Ferries (who also sail to Shetland) and Pentland Ferries.

There are still a few small independent ferry operators serving the smaller islands such as Kerrera and Easdale.

And, of course, there is the well-known Glenelg Ferry that carries a few cars at a time across the narrow sea strait of Kylerhea to Skye. This is quite an experience as it is the smallest turntable car ferry service in Scotland and one of the last of its kind. Similar ferries used to operate all over Scotland but have been replaced by bridges such as those at Kyleakin and Ballachulish.

Ferry Timetables:

If you are going on a Scottish Island holiday you will need to get acquainted with the CalMac website. This is the go to resource for ferry times, prices and bookings.

There are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind when booking ferries.

1. Seasonal Changes:

Ferry arriving at Claonaig with mixed weather

CalMac operates a different timetable in Winter than it does in Summer. So if you are looking at ferry times you need to make sure you are looking at the right season. The Summer schedule typically runs from late March to late October.

Northlink ferries also have seasonal changes in their ferry times with extra services running between Mid-May and the end of August.

2. Low Tide Timetable Amendments:

Some Calmac ferry routes have quirky timetable variations due to low tide conditions. Mallaig harbour is particularly vulnerable to this. If sailing on the following routes you need to take note of the “Tidal Amendments” that occur on specific days.

  • Mallaig - Armadale
  • Mallaig - Lochboisdale
  • Mallaig - Eigg
  • Berneray - Leverburgh
  • Oban - Lismore

Booking Your Tickets:

As a general rule of thumb, if a CalMac ferry crossing takes ~30 minutes or less, it will operate a “turn up and go” system. This simply means that you can’t book a place in advance and they operate a first come first served service.

Fishnish ferry showing first come first served system

This system is fine in most cases as the shorter ferry sailings mean you don’t have too long to wait between ferries. But on some routes, such as Tobermory to Kilchoan, you could have a 2 hour wait if you don’t get on the ferry that you hoped for.

We would always recommend that you pre-book your ferry if you can do so. Certain routes are busy in summer and it just isn’t worth the risk of winging it.

The websites for CalMac, Northlink Ferries, and Pentland Ferries all have online booking systems where you can make secure payments by credit card.

If you are sailing with CalMac, they have introduced a modern ticketing system that emails you with a ticket that has a QR code that you present at the ferry for scanning. There's no need to carry any paper tickets, and there's even an App that you can download to your phone so all your tickets are stored online and are easy to access.

If you are going to be using a lot of CalMac ferries, it is worth registering for an Account on the  Calmac website as this makes it quicker to buy tickets, or to change a booking.

Check-in at the Ferry:

When you are looking at the ferry timetables, you also need to take note of the “Check-in” times as these vary depending on the route.

If you have booked your tickets and arrive after the designated check-in time, you may lose your place on the ferry.

SO always allow enough time to get to the ferry before the check-in time.

Don’t worry, if you buy one of our guides you will find the check-in times highlighted and we suggest how to schedule your day to arrive at the ferry with time to spare.

Boarding the Ferry:

After checking in at the ferry, you will be guided to park your car in a designated boarding lane. Arriving first for the ferry doesn’t always mean that you will be the first off.

Unfortunately, there generally isn’t a great deal to do at the ferry terminals whilst you wait to board the boat. If you are traveling with children, you might wish to think about having some games to hand to keep them amused during the 30 - 45 minute wait.

This isn’t a problem if you are boarding at Oban, Ullapool, Tarbert (Harris), Stornoway or Brodick as the ferry terminal is not far from some gift shops and restaurants.

Disabled Passengers:

Calmac is very efficient when it comes to assisting passengers with mobility problems.

When you make a booking with CalMac you just need to notify them that you will require assistance with the boarding. Then, when you arrive at the ferry check in, they will recognise your booking and make sure that your vehicle is parked on the ferry beside an elevator.

It is all very smoothly organised.

On Board the ferry:

As you would expect, the size of the ferries and what you get on board is very varied.

A general rule of thumb with CalMac ferries is that any ferry on a route that takes more than 30 minutes, will have a cafe on board.

If you are on one of their larger ferries, you can expect to have a restaurant serving a choice of meals which typically seems to include fish and chips, a curry and some pasta dish like a lasagne. It won’t be the culinary highlight of your Scotland tour, but eating on the board is sometimes a good way to make use of your time if you have a packed touring agenda.

The larger ferries also have a bar which is where the “locals” can often be found catching up with the island gossip.

If you prefer a quieter space, there are observation lounges with comfy seating and, of course, you can always sit out on the deck and take in the bracing sea air and coastal scenery.

Taking in the scenery on the Islay ferry

The Northlink Ferries that sail to Orkney and Shetland are really comfortable ships and have great facilities. The Shetland route is a long crossing so the ferries need good facilities and they feel more like cruise ships.

The Pentland Ferry from Gills Bay to Orkney is a smaller ferry designed for speed so it is more basic than the Northlink Ferries, but it does have a great observation deck. You can also peer into the bridge of the ship and see what the captain is doing.

Most Scenic Ferry Routes:

There are some ferry crossings worth taking for the scenery. This is a list of some of our favourites.

Kennacraig to Port Ellen (Islay) - The highlight of this route is the approach to Port Ellen as the ferry passes the famous distilleries of Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig. You might need to use a tele-foto lens as the distilleries are in the distance but we took this picture with a modest little camera and it turned out OK.

Lagavulin Distillery viewed from the Islay Ferry

Uig to Tarbert (Harris) - There is a magic about arriving on Harris. It certainly doesn’t feel like any part of mainland Scotland and it retains a distinct island culture. This is one of the few places in Europe where the Sabbath is still a strict day of rest. But they know how to throw a party too!

Sailing away from Harris

Ardrossan to Brodick (Arran) - The appeal of this ferry crossing is the contrast between the urban environment of Ardrossan harbour and the mountainous backdrop of Brodick Bay. When you disembark in Brodick, you are literally stepping off into the Highlands as Arran sits astride the geological fault line that delineates the start of the Highlands.

Looking back at Brodick Bay as we sail back to Ardrossan

Scrabster to Stromness (Orkney) - If you are sailing to Orkney, it is worth taking the Northlink Ferry to Stromness as this route sails below the sea cliffs of the Isle of Hoy. At 1,140 feet, these are the highest perpendicular sea cliffs in the British Isles and dwarf the ferry.

Vertical cliffs of Hoy as viewed on sailing to Stromness

The Captain announces when you are approaching the “Old Man of Hoy” sea stack, but this often leads to a rush on deck so it is best to get outside early on to reserve a good spot for a photo.

Old Man of Hoy viewed from Stromness ferry

Oban to Craignure (Mull) - Sailing out of Oban harbour you pass the ivy-clad ruins of Dunollie Castle.

Dunollie Castle as viewed from ferry sailing from Oban

But Dunollie is just the warm-up act for Duart Castle which is a much more impressive fortress perched on a headland that guards the southern approaches to the Sound of Mull. The castle has an impressive arsenal of cannon that could probably still put a few nasty dents in the CalMac ferry.

Holiday Details

Day one – glasgow to iona.

You start by train from Glasgow, taking the West Highland Line past Loch Lomond, then branching west for the journey past Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle to the port of Oban. Here you cross by ferry to Mull then use local bus connections and a second short ferry to reach the enchanting Isle of Iona. This tiny island is a deeply spiritual place – a historic Christian pilgrimage destination which has drawn travellers to its enigmatic shores for more than a thousand years.

Your Hotel on Iona

The hotel was built in 1868 as the village inn, and is located just 200 yards from the ferry jetty and a short walk from the famous abbey. There are only fifteen cosy bedrooms with ensuite facilities, and the freshly prepared real home-cooking uses many herbs and vegetables from the on-site organic garden.

Day Two – Iona

Iona’s popularity as a daytrip destination is in stark contrast to the numbers of people who stay overnight. You’re in an ideal position to experience the peace and even mysticism of an island which has played a notable role in Scottish society for hundreds of years. The brilliant blue-green waters and clear light here have inspired poets, painters and pilgrims for centuries. Iona’s historical and spiritual significance dates back to the time of St. Columba, who founded a monastery here and helped to spread Christianity throughout Scotland. The present Iona Abbey dates from the eleventh century and is a true sanctuary, where services and special events are held every day throughout the summer months. The island is also noted for its wonderful sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs, offering picturesque views over to Mull. As you explore this enchanting wilderness, whether on foot or bicycle, keep an eye out for some stunning wild flowers and rare birds, including corncrakes, sparrowhawks and buzzards.

Day Three – To Tobermory, Mull

Return by ferry to Mull and make your way by local bus to the main island village of Tobermory, your base for the next two nights.

Your hotel in Tobermory

Renovated from a 200 year old Fisherman’s cottage, your accommodation is quirky and boutique. All rooms are completely unique in their shape and style with some offering spectacular views over Tobermory Bay.

Dinner can be enjoyed at the hotel’s restaurant which is popular with residents and locals alike.

Day Four – The Isle of Mull

A sheer paradise for lovers of Scotland’s natural heritage, Mull boasts an enviable diversity of wildlife thriving everywhere from dense woodland glens to the grassy slopes of Ben More. Off-shore is one of Europe’s prime habitats for whales and dolphins – we can add a wildlife boat trip to your holiday if you wish. Meanwhile, lively Tobermory has a bustling vitality and is a great place for a few days. Brightly painted houses provide a colourful backdrop to the picture-postcard harbour and the ‘craic’ in waterfront bars rivals anything on the mainland.

We can arrange a number of guided tours today, whether you are interested in wildlife, photography or walking.

Day Five – From Mull to Spean Bridge

Today you return by ferry to the mainland and then rejoin the West Highland rail line, travelling from Oban to the Highland village of Spean Bridge, where you will be met and transferred to your cosy small hotel for an overnight stop.

Your Hotel in Spean Bridge

With views toward Ben Nevis, this family-run small hotel provides comfortable but informal accommodation and a restaurant that prides itself on home-cooked organic food. On arrival, you will be greeted with fresh tea and home-made scones. Settle into your room to unwind, or take a stroll down the quiet country lanes for amazing views of Ben Nevis, Loch Lochy and the Great Glen and work up an appetite for dinner. There are comfy sofas and cosy corners in the sitting rooms, with a library of books begging to be looked at. When the need arises, real fires will warm your toes. This is a perfect haven for a relaxing break, where the pace of life slows the minute you arrive.

Day Six – To the Isle of Skye

After a morning to relax and perhaps take a refreshing walk in the shadow of Ben Nevis, it’s onwards once again on the West Highland Line to Mallaig. Why not upgrade and take the Jacobite Steam Train in first class, for a memorable experience? From here, cross by ferry to the Isle of Skye. You will be met and transferred to your final lochside hotel.

Your Hotel on the Isle of Skye

Nestled in an idyllic spot right by the water’s edge, your whitewashed hotel is the hub of the estate and Gaelic-speaking community. Whether in the main house or adjacent Garden House, rooms enjoy superb views across the water to the lighthouse of Isle Ornsay. Candlelit meals in the wood-panelled dining room reflect the estate’s culinary riches, with local seafood and game featuring prominently on the menu.

Day Seven – Relax on Skye

Today you will have the chance to experience the highlights of Skye on a full day tour, led by a local guide.

From your hotel you will head north to Sligachan then probably to Dunvegan via Carbost, past Dunvegan Castle. Other options include a drive into Waternish (Skyeskyns Tannery, Trumpan Church ruins) if the castle tour is omitted. Next you’ll have a short stop in Portree before heading round the Trotternish peninsula before returning to your hotel.

If there is anything in particular that you would like to see, please advise the guide who will try and incorporate this into your tour.

Day Eight – Return to Glasgow

It is now time to leave Skye, by ferry to Mallaig then travel the length of the West Highland Line back to Glasgow, once more crossing the marvellous Glenfinnan Viaduct then traversing the spectacular wilderness of Rannoch Moor. Here the railway parts company with the road and you’ll see nothing but peat bog, occasional trees and looming mountains for mile on end. If you can tear your gaze away from the window, it’s a great chance to reminisce about your favourite moments from your Scottish island hopping adventure.

Sustainable Travel

This holiday is part of our ever-growing collection of public transport based holidays, enabling you to reach less accessible destinations around Scotland – in this case, the Scottish islands of Iona, Mull and Skye without the need to drive. We feel strongly that true sustainability also means promoting and helping to maintain a way of life in areas where the economic benefit of tourism can make a genuine difference to the local community, which is why we have used locally-owned small accommodation and a local guide on this holiday.

scottish island hopping tours

This holiday starts and finishes in Glasgow, though connecting rail travel from Edinburgh, or any other mainline rail station can be arranged at an additional cost.

£1825 per person for April & October, £1865 per person for May to September.

The supplement for a single traveller is £1230 per holiday, based on single occupancy of double/twin rooms.

Tour Itinerary

Tour information, tour route map.

After leaving Edinburgh we call in at Glasgow and then to the village of Luss where little cottages decked in rambling roses lead down on to the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. Go back in time to the Viking raids of the 13th century with a stroll around the ancient churchyard where a Viking ‘hogback’ grave still stands.

Our next stop is at iconic viewpoint at the ‘Rest and Be Thankful’. These words, etched in stone, reveal the relief of soldiers who laboured on the original road in 1750.

Travelling along the banks of Loch Fyne, the white outline of Inveraray springs into view. The town was established in 1745 by the 3rd Duke of Argyll, head of the powerful Clan Campbell. You’ll have time to enjoy lunch and its tourist attractions like Inveraray Castle and gardens.

Oban, known as ‘The Gateway to the Isles’, is where we catch our ferry to the Isle of Mull. We spend the next three nights in the town of Tobermory which is renowned for the multi-coloured houses overlooking the harbour.

A scenic drive brings us to Fionnphort for the 10-minute ferry crossing to Iona, where St Columba founded the Celtic Christian religion in 563 AD. You can visit Iona Abbey, the small stone building of St Oran’s Chapel and the graveyard Reilig Òdhrain, reputed to be the resting place of 48 ancient Scottish kings including the 11th century king Macbeth.

It’s worth a stroll up Torr an Aba where St Columba’s writing hut is said to have stood. From Iona’s highest point at Dun I, turquoise waters stretch out to Tiree, Coll and the Treshnish Isles.

For wildlife lovers there is an optional boat trip to Fingal’s Cave on uninhabited Staffa. The best time to see puffins is from early May to early August. Dolphins and porpoises are often seen playing in the water. Look out for minke and fin whales or even the elusive basking shark.

Fingal’s Cave is a geological wonder with its hexagonal basalt rock columns formed millions of years ago by volcanic eruptions. Its evocative acoustics inspired Mendelssohn to compose his Hebrides Overture (Fingal’s Cave) after he visited in 1829.

Cal Mac Ferry - 6 Day Island Hopping Tour from Edinburgh

Dervaig village was laid out in 1799 but nearby standing stones at Kilmore suggest a prehistoric settlement, and the remains of a Highland village recall the 18th and 19th century clearances.

Enjoy a walk on the white sands of Calgary Bay, one of Scotland’s best beaches. You might even spot a sea eagle overhead. These magnificent birds of prey are the largest in the UK with a wingspan of over 2 metres.

The tiny Isle of Ulva offers the chance to walk on untouched shell beaches and breath in the scents of lush woodland. This is a nature-lover’s paradise and is another area where you might spot sea eagles, golden eagles and otters. The thatched ‘Sheila’s Cottage’ houses a museum and heritage centre and refreshments are served at the Boathouse café. Back at Tobermory distillery you might enjoy a dram of single malt whisky.

Today sees us take two short ferry journeys onto the Morvern peninsula and the mainland where we enter unspoilt Glencoe. Scotland’s most famous glen bore witness to the Glencoe Massacre of 1692 and it’s here you meet up with our Skye tour.

Glenfinnan is where Bonnie Prince Charlie claimed the throne of Great Britain and Ireland for the Stuart kings. Climb up to the viewpoint for some stunning views, and you’ll see the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct curve through the glen as the route to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts.

Continuing north we’ll get off the beaten track for spectacular views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail before crossing over the bridge to Skye.

Fairy Pools - 6 Day Island Hopping Tour from Edinburgh

The Isle of Skye never disappoints and at Glenbrittle the sparkling crystal clear waters of the Fairy Pools entice visitors from all over the world and even make for delightful wild swimming.

Portree offers lots of lunch options before we head to the Trotternish Peninsula. The spectacular Quiraing has been created by a massive landslip and the Mealt waterfalls seem to tumble down the very edge of the world into the ocean below. If reachable we’ll visit the Fairy Glen with its supernatural grassy mounds and ponds.

Bizarre geological shapes and formations define the landscape, such as the basalt columns of Kilt Rock. The iconic geological creation, the Old Man of Storr, is another photo stop before we return to Kyleakin and an evening to yourselves.

Surrounded by majestic highland scenery, Eilean Donan castle sits on an island at a point where three great sea lochs meet. You’ll have time to visit this stunning castle and enjoy its spectacular location.

Loch Ness is home to Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. You’ll have time to enjoy lunch, take an optional monster spotting cruise or wander along the the Caledonian Canal.

Our journey continues through the Cairngorms National Park, passing Blair Castle to Pitlochry for our final refreshment stop of the day. We return to Edinburgh via the Queensferry crossing where you’ll see the gigantic red cantilevers of the Forth Bridge rising out of the Firth of Forth.

12/09/22 – Amanda

Went to Mull for 3 nights then Skye as well. Discover Scotland tours are excellent! Our driver Stuart (for Mull) was a very respectful and interesting driver and guide. On Skye, the same can be said of John. These tours were both flexible, with drivers gauging the desires of the group. No early mornings here, we were able to enjoy our BB breakfasts before getting picked up directly for the day’s outing. Service was prompt, friendly and entertaining. Itineraries on both islands were well laid out and we especially enjoyed our daytrips from Mull to the isles of Iona, Ulva and Staffa. We come from BC’s west coast and were impressed by the unique landscapes. A highly organized company. Via TripAdvisor

20/06/22 – Holly

We did the 6 day tour of Mull, Iona, Staffa and Skye plus more! It was phenomenal. Guides John and Jerry were knowledgeable and fun. The tour is structured brilliantly. Numbers of participants are small enough that we became a little family. Highly, highly recommend. Amazing is an understatement. I wish they would expand to other locations. I would not hesitate to go on one of their tours again. Via TripAdvisor.

23/05/22 – Tay

We took the 6D5N tour to Isle of Mull, Iona and Skye. Our tour guides, John (for Mull, Iona) and Jerry (for Skye) were great. They were knowledgeable, funny and passionate in sharing the best sights of Scotland together with some history or fun facts. The weather was mostly great and the tour guides also tailored our itinerary to make the best of the weather on each day. The highlight would definitely be seeing the puffins on Staffa Island. Big thanks again to a John and Jerry for making our Highlands trip such a memorable one. Via TripAdvisor.

25/10/21 – H L

I very much enjoyed the 6-day island-hopping tour, covering Mull, Iona, and Skye, as well as parts of the Highlands such as Glencoe and Loch Ness. John, the tour leader for the first few days, and Cliff, the tour leader for the final days, were both excellent. Although they had different personalities, both were professional, knowledgeable, and able to flex the schedules and sights to accommodate weather and passengers’ interests. The itinerary itself was very good and made for full days – even having to skip Staffa due to weather, I had plenty to do and see each day and was ready for dinner and my bed each evening! The B&Bs arranged by Discover Scotland were very nice too, with gracious hosts and locations close to restaurants. Finally, I appreciated the clean and updated condition of the buses, especially the air filtration system to increase protections against COVID. The seats were comfortable and included USB ports for charging my phone. I would definitely recommend a tour with Discover Scotland. Via TripAdvisor.

23/08/21 – Stephen

We chose 6 day tour of Mull and Skye and were not disappointed. Interesting itinerary gave an insight into the highlands . The two drivers Cliff and Jeff were helpful and informative and kept us safe and entertained throughout. The fantastic weather obviously helped the experience but the minibuses used were both comfortable and safe .The guesthouses chosen for us on Mull and Skye were very good and the scenery encountered breathtaking and awesome ; would recommend to anyone .The chance to visit small islands Iona and Ulva was both memorble and awesome whilst paddling on calgary beach in mull was as good a beach anywhere in world with white sands and azure seas . Five star experience. Via TripAdvisor.

16/08/21 – Yue

We did a 6-day tour around the Isle of Mull and Skye. The tour was very well designed, our guide John and Andy are both considerate, knowledgable and full of ethusiasm! We saw things that only local would know. The operation team did a fantastic job to book accomodation ahead of the time with recommendations for restaurant booking, it came handy particularly for Mull at peak season. Via TripAdvisor

24/05/21 – Esme

Just home from a 6 day tour of Mull and Skye. Weather was amazing ever day was beautiful weather could not have been better. The Trips to Iona and then the magnificent Fingals Cave was fantastic. Plenty of lovely runs on Mull before travelling over to Skye to visit all the lovely places. Our drivers Cliff and Andrew were very nice and had a great knowledge of the places of interest. Would certainly recommend. Via TripAdvisor

24/05/21 – Keren

My friend and I did the Inner Hebrides (Mull and Skye) 6 day tour. Loved it. The company (can’t remember the lady’s name) sorted out a problem meeting the tour in Glasgow (because of pandemic restrictions). Our first driver was brilliant – Cliff – helpful and friendly and loads of interesting information. Our second driver – Jeff – for Skye was brilliant as well (and really funny). We had a fantastic weather one day and he just showed us so much stuff – even a couple not scheduled – but nothing felt rushed – we had plenty of time everywhere we stopped. At the end, could happily have “gone round again”. Via TripAdvisor.

Day 1 Arrival on a Saturdays (7 nights) and daily (6 nights – not on Monday or Fridays)

Arrive in Ardrossan and pick up your rental bikes just before 5.30pm. Then take the 6 pm by ferry to the Isle of Arran. The ferry journey takes just under the hour. Your accommodation shall be a short walk from the harbour. Now you can start to enjoy Island life.

Day 2 Brodick South Island Loop 34 miles (54 km)

The Isle of Arran has it all, mountains, coastal cliffs, rolling and flat roads, that’s why many people say that Arran is a Scotland in miniature. Before setting off on today’s cycle ride why not visit the 13th century Brodick Castle and gardens or the Arran brewery. Today you cycle around the southern half of the Island. The road south provides you with ever-changing views. Small villages intermix with spectacular coastal scenes.

Lamlash provides the link to Holy Isle, where a ferry can be caught to the monastery still occupied by Buddist monks. The Isle has had a spiritual heritage since the 6th century.  Return to Arran and continue your ride clockwise before you head back across the ‘String’ the link road across the centre of the island. This day is hillier than other days and does involve some short steep climbs.

Day 3 Brodick – Lochranza – Cloanaig – Kennocraig -Isle of Islay 20-23 miles (32-37 km)

A day to cycle and relax on ferries. You cycle north, firstly on a flat section of five miles before climbing over to Lochranza. If you have time visit the ruined castle and then catch the ferry to Cloanaig (carry own luggage onto the ferry). Then it is back on your bike for the short ride across the Kintyre peninsula to catch your second ferry from Kennacraig to Port Askaig on Island of Islay (carry own luggage onto the ferry). This two-hour ferry crossing passing some stunning coastal scenes. The fast flowing  Sound of Islay, the waterway between Islay and Jura is a great habitat for whales and dolphins. Once on Islay we normally stay in Ballygrant a few miles inland.

Day 4 Day trip to Isle of Jura various up to 50 miles (up to 80 km).

Today a short ferry crossing to the Island of Jura. On Jura navigation is easy, there is only 1 road. The Island of Jura is populated by some 5000 deer and 250 people. Jura House can be visited with some wonderful walled gardens and exotic plants. The road east gradually gets smaller and smaller until eventually turning into a footpath. Here you will feel you have reached nowhere and the solitude will be something you will remember forever.

You might start to hear the noise of the Corryvreckan whirlpool a very dangerous effect where three tidal waters meet and create a whirlpool. For a short additional trip visit Finlaggan near Ballygrant on your return to Islay, the home of the ancient seat of the Lord of the Isle’s, the rulers of the Western Isles once the Vikings had been removed.

Day 5 Day trip to Isle of Colonsay 20 miles 32km (Wednesday’s – 7 night tour only)

Catch the ferry at Port Askaig to Colonsay in the morning. Colonsay being 10 miles long will allow you to explore most of the Island. Cycle to Ornasay across the tidal causeway to visit the ancient priory. The north section of Colonsay has some of the finest beaches in the Western Isles. Catch the evening ferry back to Islay.

Day 5/6 Port Askaig to Port Ellen / Bowmore surroundings 36-43 miles ( 57-68 km )

Today you will explore by bike the north-west of Islay, known as the Rinns of Islay before cycling to the south of the Island. Today you will pass the Bruichladdich distillery before arriving in Port Charlotte. Then to the north coast where you shall find Kilchoman distillery just before a wonderful sandy beach, ideal for a picnic, pass the wildlife centre, rural life museum or RSPB centre then cycle the quiet lanes south to either Port Ellen or Bowmore.

Day 6/7 Isle of Islay south coast 22-34 miles (35-54km).

Today there are a few options, for whisky lovers, heaven has arrived in Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg. If you are staying in Bowmore first you cycle to Port Ellen or you may decide to stay in Bowmore and visit the distillery which has been refining whisky for over 240 years. For those wanting to cycle further, the coastal road to Claggain Bay passing Kildalton cross is totally stunning or if you are into Golf then just outside Port Ellen is Islay’s only Golf course. The whisky tour in Ardbeg is extremely interesting, you shall not only find out about how whisky is made but also the fascinating history of whisky production on the Island.

Day 7/8 Departure Bowmore / Port Ellen to Arran. 23-30 miles 37-49km

After breakfast, you will take the 9.45 am ferry (or 12:45 on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays) from Port Ellen to Kennacraig (carry your own luggage onto the ferry). If you stayed in Bowmore you shall first have the cycle ride to Port Ellen. Once in Kennacraig, it’s back on your bike to cycle across the Kintyre peninsula to Cloanaig. Then it is back on the ferry to the Island of Arran (carry your own luggage onto the ferry) and your last cycle ride to Brodick this time along the not yet explored north-west coastline, where you shall catch the ferry around 19:20 back to Ardrossan where you shall hand back you bikes just around 8.15 pm. You take the small ferry to Iona, the birthplace of Celtic Christianity, and ancient burial ground of Scottish Kings. Here you can visit the historic abbey with its intricate carved crosses in the churchyard, or explore rocky headlands and sandy coves.

There’s an opportunity to take a small boat for an optional trip to the island of Staffa and view the dramatic basalt columns immortalised by Mendelssohn in his Hebridean Overture "Fingal's Cave".

You then return on the ferry to Oban for your second night.

  • Arrive in the most ‘tropical’ town in Scotland, Plockton
  • Be awestruck by the majestic slopes of Glencoe

You ramble north along the west coast around Appin, passing the impregnable Castle Stalker. Next, you head to the gorgeous Glencoe, one of the most famous natural landmarks in all of Scotland. This beautiful area boasts steep slopes and photogenic peaks. Your driver-guide may reveal to you the tragic tale that’s haunted this valley for over 300 years.

You then venture through Fort William and under the shadow of Ben Nevis, which at 1,344 meters is the highest mountain in the British Isles.

We continue through the Great Glen, a natural fault in the earth’s crust that runs through Scotland. From here, you travel north to the picturesque fishing village of Plockton. You’re dropped off at your accommodation in the early evening.

  • Traverse the legendary landscapes of Skye
  • Learn about the tales and battles that shaped the island's culture

Today is a very flexible day on Skye. There are many possibilities depending on the weather, and your driver-guide will use their local knowledge to decide on the best day out for the group.

You may ascend the Quiraing along Trotternish Ridge and be rewarded with spectacular views. Alternatively, you could drink in the scenery at Loch Coruisk or drive through the dramatic Red Cuillin to the little hamlet of Elgol.

We return you to your accommodation in Plockton in the late afternoon for a free evening to explore the village.

  • Snap a few photos at the gorgeous Eilean Donan Castle
  • Try and spot the Loch Ness Monster

You’re collected from your accommodation for the short drive to the famous stronghold of Eilean Donan Castle.

Then, you travel east taking in the stunning views over Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail. You continue to Loch Ness for lunch and the possibility of spotting "Nessie".

Half an hour south of Loch Ness you stop in the village of Spean Bridge and join a new bus for the continuation of your tour to Orkney. Your guides will help you transfer your luggage and introduce you to your new travelling companions.

With your new crew, you continue north following the Great Glen travelling the entire 23 miles of the famous loch. You arrive at Inverness, where you’re dropped off at your accommodation. The evening is free for you to explore the 'Capital of the Highlands'.

  • Arrive in the Capital of Orkney, Kirkwall
  • Explore mainland Scotland’s most northern scenery

It’s an early start, leaving behind the 'Capital of the Highlands', crossing over the Black Isle, and continuing past Dunrobin Castle.

From here, you drive along the northeast Highland coastline, travelling into some of Scotland's most dramatic scenery.

Onwards through Scotland's most northerly mainland village, John o' Groats, and then to Gills Bay, where you board the ferry, and cross the Pentland Firth into the Orkney Archipelago.

It’s a short drive to the famous Italian Chapel where you stop for a visit before continuing to the Viking stronghold of Kirkwall, Capital of Orkney. Here you can visit Kirkwall's magnificent Viking Cathedral and enjoy its historic winding streets in the evening.

  • Go to an ancient site that is older than the pyramids, Skara Brae
  • See the wild ocean clash with redstone cliffs

Today is your chance to explore this archipelago’s fertile green pastures, fringed by shores of golden sands and washed by waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

You visit the 5,000-year-old village of Skara Brae, the mystical prehistoric stone circle at Brodgar and the Druidic standing stones of Stenness.

You then travel onto Maeshowe, where in the 12th century the Vikings left one of the largest collections of Norse runic inscriptions.

Then it’s back to Kirkwall for your second night after what is sure to be a memorable day.

  • Stroll around the beautiful harbour town of Ullapool
  • Take a look at the stunningly located ruins of Ardvreck Castle

After a relaxed start, you leave Orkney and sail the Viking waters back to the mainland. From here, you travel the old road right across the very top of Scotland, driving past the stunning Ben Loyal and Ben Hope mountains, following the rocky cliffs and stunning golden sand beaches.

You then visit the far northwest Highlands and the wilderness of the mountains of Assynt before stopping to view the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle.

From here, you travel to Ullapool, situated at the mouth of Loch Broom, a beautiful whitewashed fishing village where you spend two nights.

Once again, you leave the group at this point and on day 10 join your new group, with whom you will stay for the rest of the tour.

  • Discover the tranquil Highland way of life
  • Admire the beauty of the Summer Isles on a boat trip

You have a free day in Ullapool before you join your new driver-guide and companions. This picturesque fishing town is surrounded by stunning mountains and is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.

If you want to spot seals, dolphins, porpoises, numerous sea birds and eagles, you can go on a cruise around the Summer Isles.

Alternatively, you can head up Claypool hill for an easy two-hour walk offering wonderful views over Loch Broom.

Ullapool is also a great place to relax and enjoy the Highland pace of life. You can browse the small craft boutiques, try whisky in a pub, or savour top quality seafood. And in the evening, enjoy some live music and mingle with the locals before your next leg of the journey.

  • Travel by ferry through the Summer Isles
  • Explore a lighthouse and the rugged coastline of Lewis

Wake up, enjoy your breakfast, and look out over Loch Broom as it glistens under the morning sky. You meet your new travel companions and take a ferry across the sea.

This two and a half-hour boat trip takes you through the Summer Isles to Stornoway, the main town of the Western Isles. But don’t spend your time snoozing and reading as you sail across the ocean; because if you look out to sea, you may spot dolphins and whales.

Once you’ve arrived on Lewis and Harris, you head to the North West coast. Your driver-guide will make the most of what weather you’ve been blessed with and take you through traditional crofting towns and seaside ports. You even get to see the Butt of Lewis; from the lighthouse here there’s nothing but fishes and water between you and America.

You spend the evening in Stornoway; a bustling port town and the home of Scotland’s most delicious black puddings.

  • Step inside a traditional Scottish home at Arnol Blackhouse*
  • Ponder over the mysteries of the Neolithic standing stones of Calanais**

Today, you immerse yourself in the history and landscapes of this wild island.

You first head to Arnol Blackhouse*. Here, you can experience what traditional farming life was like in these remote reaches without getting your hands too dirty.

A little down the road, you visit the stone fort of Dun Carloway. This structure was built before 100AD and has experienced more battles than you’ve had hot dinners. It’s a wonderful location to ponder over the vast swathes of history that have come before you.

You then travel through a landscape littered with crofting villages to one of the most famous sights of the island, the Calanais Stone Circle**. This prehistoric site still mystifies archaeologists today.

The rest of your afternoon is spent in the beautiful beaches and mountains of the western side of Lewis.

You head back to Stornoway in the late afternoon.

*Please note that Arnol Blackhouse will be closed between Monday 23rd September and  Thursday 17th October inclusive, due to repairs. If your tour departs between 16th September and 30th September, the visitor centre with shop and exhibition will remain open along with the white house, but unforunately a full visit into the Blackhouse will not be available. We apologise for the inconvenience.

**The Calanais stones will be closed from 26 October 2024. This will affect tours departing between 25-29 Oct 2024. We apologise for any inconvenience.

  • Admire the landscapes that inspired Harris Tweed
  • Cast your eyes upon the slender, blonde curves of Luskentyre beach

It’s time for something a little more dramatic. It’s time to enter the region of Harris.

Harris boasts the highest mountains in the Outer Hebrides and one of the most beautiful white-sandy beaches in Britain, Luskentyre.

The area is also famous for Harris Tweed and myths that are as strange as they are poignant.

After a morning of exploring the dramatic landscapes, you stop for lunch. Depending on the weather, we may even go for a picnic on the beach – so don’t forget to pack your sunglasses.

Your adventure continues on a ferry over the sea to Portree, the largest town in Skye and your base for the next two evenings.

  • Set your sights on Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes on the Isle of Skye
  • Snap a famous photo of Portree’s colourful harbour front

Back on the Isle of Syke and today your driver-guide makes the most out of your time on this marvel-studded landscape.

You may travel to the Quiraing mountain pass and enjoy a spectacular walk, venture to Kilt Rock and see a gigantic waterfall, or take a boat trip to the lesser-known Loch Coruisk.

After you’ve enjoyed the sights of Skye, you have your final evening in Portree. There are plenty of fabulous seafood restaurants to celebrate a fine day of exploring.

  • Learn how Eilean Donan Castle survived Viking invasions and 343 barrels of gunpowder
  • Discover how Glencoe earned its name, ‘the Weeping Glen’

Don’t be too sad that your trip is ending today, because there are a lot of amazing things to check out on the way back to Edinburgh.

Once you’ve crossed the Skye Bridge, you get a chance to see Eilean Donan Castle. This classic combination of a sturdy-stone fortification perched upon a loch is about as Scottish a view as you can get. Just ensure you’ve got some room left on your camera to take photos.

You then travel under Britain’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis. The peak of this mountain is likely to be shrouded high in the clouds.

Your driver-guide may become a little emotional as you move through the valley of Glencoe. This marvellously mountainous area was the site of one of the most tragic massacres in Scottish history. The story is as unforgettable as the landscape.

The hilly views become flatter as you enter the Lowlands and travel to Edinburgh.

You arrive in the early evening.

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab: types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - Edinburgh - Oban - Tobermory (Isle of Mull)

From Edinburgh, we travel west through Stirling and enter the picturesque Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park . As we travel along the banks of Loch Lomond, we will soon leave the Lowlands behind and enter the beauty of the Highlands! We'll make a stop in the picturesque village of Luss, so you can enjoy the views over the "bonnie, bonnie banks" to towering Ben Lomond.

At Arrochar, we drive around the head of Loch Long, then undertake the long climb over the Rest and be Thankful pass which rewards us with panoramic views of Glen Croe and Ben Arthur.

For centuries, the Duke of Argyll lived at Inveraray Castle. The castle you see today was built by the Third Duke, who also decided to move the village to make room for his new home. As we will discover, the result was a pretty town on the banks of Loch Fyne that exudes 18th-century charm.

Our next stop is Kilmartin Glen, renowned for its rich archaeological heritage. With over 5,000 years of history, we'll step back in time and explore Dunadd Hill Fort, the former power base of the Gaelic kings from the 500s to the 800s AD.

Later this afternoon, we'll board the ferry in Oban for the short sail to the Isle on Mull. On arrival, we'll make our way to Tobermory, our home, for the next two nights.

Overnight: Tobermory, Isle of Mull (2 nights),

Day 2 - Treshnish Islands and Staffa Cruise

After breakfast, we board the boat for our wildlife cruise to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa.

The Treshnish Isles are a prominent feature of the southern Hebrides, serving as landmarks for travellers for over 1,000 years. Named by Vikings who once ruled the region, these eight islands vary in size and stretch 11 km west of Mull.

Lunga is the best spot for puffin viewing, with sightings possible* from mid-April to early August. In addition to their breathtaking scenery, these uninhabited islands are home to a medieval castle and a thriving wildlife community, making them a nationally significant treasure.

Staffa was formed by volcanic eruptions around 50 million years ago. Cooling lava created a striking pattern of hexagonal columns on the cave walls.

The island is best known for the legendary Fingal's Cave, a natural wonder that has attracted visitors for centuries. Its famous admirers include Queen Victoria, Jules Verne, and composer Felix Mendelssohn, who was inspired by the cave's beauty to compose his renowned "Hebrides Overture." There will be time ashore to spot more wildlife* and enjoy the fantastic island views.

* Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Day 3 - Exploring Mull and Iona

A memorable day awaits as our tour of the Isle of Mull takes us to Glen More and then along the banks of Loch Scridain to the winding road across the Ross of Mull to reach Fionnphort, where the ferry to Iona awaits.

In 563, St Columba arrived on Iona from Ireland to found a monastery and bring Christianity to Scotland. Since then, Iona has attracted visitors who come to explore Iona Abbey and soak up the sense of peace and history that pervades the island.

Close by, St Oran’s Graveyard has been in use for centuries and is said to be the resting place of many early Scottish Kings, including Macbeth.

Iona is also famous for its beautiful beaches, which are washed by crystal clear waters. It’s easy to find a secluded cove to sit, relax, and take in the lovely views.

Later, we’ll return by ferry to the Isle of Mull and rejoin our coach for the journey to Craignure, where we board our second ferry, bound for Oban.

Tonight, we will stay in Oban , where you can enjoy some delicious seafood and join your fellow travellers for a drink in a local pub.

Overnight: Oban

Day 4 - Oban - Glen Coe - Edinburgh

Our last day starts by travelling north along the scenic west coast around Appin. On the way, we pass Castle Stalker, perched on a small islet in Loch Laich, which is a picturesque 14th-century tower house that was a seat of the Clan Stewart

Continuing our journey, we reach the magnificent Glen Coe, famous for its dramatic landscapes and rich history. Surrounded by towering peaks and deep ravines, it offers breathtaking views. It has been a filming location for several Hollywood blockbusters, including Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Known for the tragic Glencoe Massacre of 1692, the Glen has played a poignant part in Scotland's story.

Heading south, we pass the towering Buachaille Etive Mor, known as "the great shepherd of Etive," before descending into the rugged wilderness of Rannoch Moor, a desolate landscape of peat bogs, lochans and rocky outcrops.

We continue through the homelands of the great Scottish folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor, before breaking our journey at a whisky distillery where we can discover how Scotland's national drink is produced and enjoy a wee nip of " uisge beatha".

The last part of the journey takes us across central Scotland to the end of our adventure in Edinburgh.
