Taylor Swift Taps Paramore for European Eras Tour Run
Taylor Swift knows we need more — so she’s giving us just that. The singer has added 14 more shows to the European/U.K. leg of her Eras Tour , and announced that Paramore will provide support throughout the trek.
“Really can’t contain my excitement because… we’re adding 14 new shows to The Eras Tour,” Swift wrote on Twitter Wednesday, July 5. “And I get to travel the world doing shows with @paramore !! Hayley and I have been friends since we were teens in Nashville and now we get to frolic around the UK/Europe next summer??? I’m screaming???”

Last month, Swift added dozens of shows to her Taylor Swift: The Eras stadium tour — bringing the total count of shows to a whooping 104 nights . She also extended her run at Los Angeles’ So-Fi Stadium with a sixth show scheduled for Aug. 7.
The new addition comes after the singer announced shows in Japan, Australia, Singapore, and Europe earlier this week. (See below for the full tour dates.)
“EXCUSE ME HI I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY 🙋♀️,” she wrote on Instagram. “I can’t wait to see so many of you on The Eras Tour next year at these new international dates!”
She also added more dates to her already-announced Latin America tour. After wrapping her U.S. dates in Los Angeles on Aug. 9, Swift will head to Mexico City for four straight shows at Foro Sol starting Aug. 24. She’ll then stop in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and both Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in Brazil in November.

Swift first announced the tour last October after she completely took over the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 with Midnights . The added dates, which follow the addition of eight new shows last week, were slotted in “due to unprecedented demand,” according to the singer’s camp.
“Good Morning America, it’s Taylor,” Swift said during the announcement. “I wanted to tell you something that I’ve been so excited about for a really long time and I’ve been planning for ages, and I finally get to tell you I’m going back on tour. The tour is called the ‘Eras’ tour, and it’s a journey through all of my musical eras of my career.”

Across the tour, Swift is being supported in select cities by a combination of special guests including Paramore, beabadoobee, Phoebe Bridgers, girl in red, MUNA, HAIM, GAYLE, Gracie Abrams, and OWENN.
The Eras tour follows the cancelation of her planned 2020 Lover Fest tour, which was originally going to see her make stadium stops in Los Angeles, Boston, and New York, along with Brazil, Denmark, Norway, and Poland. “This is an unprecedented pandemic that has changed everyone’s plans and no one knows what the touring landscape is going to look like in the near future,” she wrote in 2021.
Swift last went the road in 2018 for her massive Reputation Stadium Tour , which saw Swift accompanied by the likes of Charli XCX and Camila Cabello across the United States, the United Kingdom, along with Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The tour was the highest-grossing music tour by a female artist that year.
Since her last tour, Swift has released four albums and two re-releases: Lover , Folklore , Evermore , Midnights , and Taylor’s Version editions of Fearless and Red with additional songs. In total, she’s dropped 90 tracks of new material, not including collaborations with the likes of Haim and Big Red Machine.
Fans have long wondered what music she’ll be performing on the road, with some theorizing that she’d host a residency in Las Vegas or a music festival where she’d perform different “eras” on different nights.
Along with packing her setlist with songs from Reputation in 2018, she surprised each city with an acoustic rendition of fan favorites like “Red,” “Holy Ground,” and “Wildest Dreams.” At select shows, she also brought out special guests. Shawn Mendes, Selena Gomez, Hayley Kiyoko, and Maren Morris were among the artists to be brought out by Swift.
She previously took her 1989 album on the road for 85 dates, where she was accompanied by the likes of Mendes, James Bay, Vance Joy, and Haim. Before then was The Red Tour in 2013 and 2014, and her Speak Now World Tour from 2011 to 2012.

IF YOU’VE BEEN following along Taylor Swift’s US ‘Eras’ tour journey, you’d know she’s not only delivering the ‘fits — Oscar de La Renta, Versace, Roberto Cavalli and more — but back-to-back hits. Her epic set-list spans three hours, encompassing 44 songs. Yes, we’re talking the length of the Titanic movie.
When tickets to the Australian leg of the Eras Tour went on sale in June, chaos ensued. Many fans were left heartbroken after the shows sold out but, thankfully, Swifties have one last chance to nab themselves tickets to one of the Sydney or Melbourne shows. Ahead, find out how to get the final tickets — which go on sale today — and everything else to know about The Eras Tour.
Are there any Eras Tour tickets left?

Is Taylor Swift bringing her Eras tour to Australia?
Aft much Swiftie speculation, the Midnights singer announced six huge concerts in Australia next year as part of her global Eras tour. During a social media post shared in June, Taylor Swift revealed her full international tour lineup — which included shows in Melbourne and Sydney.
“EXCUSE ME HI I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY 🙋♀️ I can’t wait to see so many of you on The Eras Tour next year at these new international dates!,” Swift shared during a Post , which has since gone viral.
The singer will perform to a huge crowd at Melbourne’s MCG on February 16 and 17, following rumours earlier this year, and then five days later — will head to Sydney’s Accor Stadium for three back-to-back shows on February 23, 24 and concluding on the 25th.
Frontier Touring also shared the exciting news to their Twitter , writing: “We’re enchanted to announce Taylor Swift is returning to Australia in 2024.”
The news follows increasing speculation Swift was to drop Australian dates, in the midst of her sold-out Eras tour in the U.S. Back in March, an MCG employee leaked the news to the popular Melbourne-based podcast Shameless : “Hush hush but I work for the MCG and dates have been booked in for Taylor…”
Further to the enigmatic MCG spill, DeuxMoi also took an interest in Swift’s possible Down Under movements, teasing : “Dates have been booked for Taylor at the MCG in Melbourne, Aus. So she’s definitely coming to Australia!”
Who is the support act for the Australian leg of the Eras Tour?
For her trip Down Under, Swift will be supported by U.S. hitmaker Sabrina Carpenter during. Carpenter has been supporting Swift for some time already, having debuted at the Mexico City show in August.

It is Rumoured New Zealand dates will be end of 2023 early 2024. The support acts are very much all about the sisterhood, with a host of acts Swift has championed in the past. Opening acts for the U.S. leg of the tour are Paramore, Haim, Phoebe Bridgers, Beabadoobee, Girl in Red, Muna, Gayle, Gracie Abrams and Owenn. The tour starts March 18, 2023 in what is apparently a sweet spot for Swift, Glendale, AZ, the same place her last outing, the pre-pandemic “Reputation” tour, began in 2018. The U.S. leg wraps up four and a half months later with two nights at L.A.’s SoFi Stadium — the venue she was set to open as a concert venue in 2020 with the canceled “Lover Fest” mini-tour. As for which album we can consider the tour to be supporting, since she has released four original studios albums since her last tour? All of them. Swift described the tour as “a journey through the musical eras of my career (past and present!),” with a graphic showing her look from different phases of her caree
Who Is Taylor Swift?
Taylor Alison Swift is an American singer-songwriter. One of the world's leading contemporary recording artists, she is known for narrative songs about her personal life, which have received widespread media coverage. Born and raised in Pennsylvania , Swift moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 14 to pursue a career in country music. She signed with the label Big Machine Records and became the youngest artist ever signed by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. Her 2006 self-titled debut album peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 and spent the most weeks on the chart in the 2000s. The album's third single, "Our Song", made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart. Swift's second album, Fearless , was released in 2008. Buoyed by the success of pop crossover singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless became the best-selling album of 2009 in the US. The album won four Grammy Awards, with Swift becoming the youngest Album of the Year winner. Taylor Swift will be returning to perform in NZ in 2023/2024 as part of her The Eras World Tour. Swiftposium 2024 organiser Dr Rebecca Trelease tells Alex Casey how the idea grew from a tweet into a three-day conference that’s had over 350 submissions.
You may recognise Dr Rebecca Trelease (Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi) from the second season of The Bachelor NZ – memorably eliminated after she revealed to Jordan Mauger that she had written a thesis about reality television (no greater betrayal). Now working as a senior lecturer at AUT, she’s recently embarked on a new journey packed with even more romance, heartbreak, gossip and analysis than The Bachelor NZ could ever dream of: organising an intensive three-day academic conference dedicated entirely to Taylor Swift.
Swiftposium 2024 (Melbourne, Feb 11-13) is the first of its kind in the world , but academic inquiry into Taylor Swift is nothing new. New York University has launched a course dedicated to the evolution of Swift’s music , Stanford University currently offering an “All Too Well (Ten Week Version)” and the University of Missouri is home to Taylor Swiftory: History & Literature Through Taylor Swift . Closer to home, a seminar held last year at Te Herenga Waka looked to analyse the poetic merits of Swift’s album Midnights .
The idea for a conference came to Trelease after she secured tickets to the Melbourne leg of Swift’s record-breaking , bracelet-making , earth-shaking Eras tour. “I saw on social media that at least five Australian academics that were Taylor fans had got their tickets for Melbourne, and I thought ‘well maybe we could all hang out and talk about her?’” A friend at the University of Melbourne casually tweeted out the idea of a conference, and quickly people from all over Australasia and the rest of the world started getting in touch.
“It really just started as me trying to find a way to hang out with other like-minded people,” says Trelease. “I was just thinking we could sit in a classroom somewhere and talk.” But as interest grew and seven universities (six from Australia, and AUT in New Zealand) threw their support behind the idea, it became clear that this was not just going to be a small soiree for scholastic Swifties. They set up a website and received over 350 presentation submissions in just a few weeks, including one from Trelease examining Taylor Swift as an educational tool.
“Taylor is very useful in my teaching pedagogy,” she explains. “When I’m lecturing or when I’m taking workshops, I always use Taylor Swift as a really accessible way into academic theory.” For example, her class about parasocial connections is rife with Swift . “We feel like she is our best friend, we know everything about her life – her boyfriends, the struggles in her career – but she has no relationship back with us. It’s all parasocial.” Although Swift isn’t for everyone, the pop star’s ubiquity is invaluable when creating common ground in the classroom.
“Anyone who takes one of my classes at AUT is sick of hearing about Taylor by the end of it, but if they understand the theory, and the point I’m trying to make, then it’s all worth it,” she says.
As for the other hundreds of academic submissions? They are still being sorted through, but Trelease says they will welcome presentations from all areas of academia. Suggestions on the website include ‘When my depression works the graveyard shift’: Mental health discourse and Taylor Swift ; ‘ Shade never made anybody less gay’: Taylor Swift’s relationship to social movements and influence on political discourse ; and ‘I was so ahead of the curve, the curve became a sphere’: Taylor Swift as pop culture catalyst, prophet and mirror .
Just as the Eras tour can boost the local economy by hundreds of millions of dollars in a single weekend , Trelease is excited about the impact that a three day academic event like Swiftposium might have on university intake in years to come. “Think of all the high school students who have just realised you can go to university and study someone like Taylor Swift, and it could become a career,” she muses. “To prove to people that you can look at your favourite popstar in this way could totally change the face of academia.”
Like Swift herself, Trelease is used to her work being dismissed as frivolous or less worthy by her industry peers. “It’s definitely coming from this perception that if something is low class, it’s not worthy of academic investigation,” she says. “But of course it is, and the only reason they might not think so is because they’re looking down on it in terms of taste.” Her sell on Swift is simple: “She’s important because she reaches so many people. That power to actually speak to the masses, but still affect us on an individual level, is so powerful.”
Thankfully, Trelease stopped caring what people thought about her academic pursuits a long time ago. “I’ve come across that attitude a lot, especially with my reality television work, where people have just outright said to my face, ‘Oh my god, I hate reality. It’s awful, it’s the worst stuff on television… but I love MasterChef’,” she sighs. “I’ve just learned to get on with it. Just because some people might think it’s frivolous doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it, and everyone should just let people enjoy what they enjoy.”
On that note, what is Trelease’s favourite Taylor Swift era? “Definitely Reputation,” she laughs. “Because I like that not everyone likes it.”

Taylor Swift massively upsets fans over Eras international tour dates: ‘I’m sick of it’
Share this with
Taylor Swift fans in New Zealand are struggling to shake (it) off the news that she won’t be playing any concerts in the country during her Eras Tour.
The Bad Blood singer, 33, announced a bunch of new international dates on Tuesday for South America , Asia, Australia, Europe, and the UK, however at the time of writing, she has no plans to put on a show for her Kiwi supporters.
Unsurprisingly, the Swifties are livid and have voiced their complaints on social media , with one branding the snub ‘absolutely criminal’.
‘Taylor Swift isn’t coming to New Zealand and I am not ok about that,’ snapped one.
‘She’s doing 3 dates in Sydney and 2 in Melbourne but none in NZ. Even Harry managed one tour date 😭’

Another blasted: ‘I’m sick of Taylor Swift snubbing New Zealand are you kidding me???’
A third wrote in disbelief: ‘Honestly shocked that Taylor Swift didn’t add New Zealand dates to her tour.’
Taylor has played shows in New Zealand in the past, having performed at the Mount Smart Stadium in 2018 as part of her Reputation Stadium Tour and at the Vector Arena in 2013 on The Red Tour.
She also ended her Speak Now World Tour in the Vector Arena in March 2012.
The award-winning artist has been performing hit tracks from her back catalogue to sold-out stadiums filled with adoring fans across the US since March and announcing more dates.

She added that more information about the dates could be found on her website.
The international tour dates will kick off in Mexico on August 24 2023 in Mexico City.
Taylor will then move to Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Singapore, France, Sweden, Portugal and Spain throughout the end of 2023 and the start of 2024 before she gets to the UK.

Two Arrested After Targeting Taylor Swift's Private Jet Ahead of London Eras Tour Concerts
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Climate activists were reportedly targeting Taylor Swift with their latest publicity stunt, which resulted in multiple arrests on Thursday, June 20.
According to the AP , two women were arrested "on suspicion of criminal damage and interference with the use or operation of national infrastructure" after using a circular saw to bypass a fence alongside a private area of London Stansted Airport, as seen in a video posted to Instagram by environmental group Just Stop Oil.
One of the two women, whom the organization identified as 28-year-old Jennifer Kowalski and 22-year-old Cole Macdonald , carried what looked like a fire extinguisher, which had been refilled with orange paint that was sprayed across at least two different private jets.
They seemed to be hoping to catch the "Mastermind" singer's plane in the crossfire, as they specifically called out Stansted as being "where Taylor Swift's jet is parked" as they "demand[ed] an emergency treaty to end fossil fuels by 2030."
They also uploaded the video to their Instagram Story, where they namedropped her one again, writing, "Sorry @taylorswift 😘."
Swift is often at the forefront of the conversation when it comes to celebrity private jet use and previously sparked an ethical debate when her plane's every movement was posted by an Instagram account dedicated to its whereabouts.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Just Stop Oil (@just.stopoil)
Unfortunately for Just Stop Oil, Essex police later confirmed that Swift's jet was not present at the time of the incident, which comes a day before the Eras Tour resumes at London's Wembley Stadium. The day prior, Just Stop Oil came under fire when they vandalized Stonehenge with the same orange paint.
The move comes not long after another group went viral for going after King Charles , vandalizing his first official royal portrait as king less than a month after it was unveiled. Animal rights activist group Animal Rising covered up the monarch's face with an image of Wallace from the cartoon series Wallace and Gromit, adding a blurb of text in the middle of his chest that read, "No cheese, Gromit. Look at all this cruelty on RSPCA farms!"—referencing alleged cruelty at farms certified by a British charity, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals .

New Zealand's Taylor Swift fans are up in arms after the 'Anti-Hero' singer announced a massive Australian tour, but no dates in Aotearoa.
On Wednesday morning, the 'Shake It Off' singer announced concert dates for Melbourne and Sydney in 2024 as part of her global Eras tour .
However, while she's playing five dates in February across the Tasman, there's been no announcement of any dates in New Zealand, angering fans who feel they've been "betrayed."
After unveiling the dates, she posted online saying she "can't wait to see so many of you on The Eras Tour next year," a comment which enraged the New Zealand fans who had been left off the schedule.
More from Newshub
"I can't believe Taylor Swift betrayed all of New Zealand," one said.
"Taylor Swift not coming to New Zealand has ruined my day, now I'm probably gonna have to go to Australia to see her by myself like a f***ing loser!!" another wrote on Twitter.
"Taylor swift what did new zealand do to you!?" another lamented.
"I'm sick of taylor swift snubbing new zealand are you kidding me???" another wrote.
Swift last played in Aotearoa at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium in 2018 as part of the Reputation tour.
However, it's definitely bad news for Swifties in New Zealand, with promoters telling Newshub they will need to start saving to travel if they want to see the show.
"Unfortunately, there are no tour dates in Aotearoa. Fans based here will need to fly to Melbourne or Sydney to attend Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour," a Frontier Touring spokesperson said.
Swift is not the only major music act to seemingly shun these shores.
Last month, Coldplay provoked outrage after announcing Australian dates but nothing for New Zealand as part of their Music of the Spheres world tour.
New Zealand's Coldplay fans took to social media to voice their anger the 'Viva La Vida' group doesn't appear to be heading to Aotearoa as part of their world tour, despite playing in Perth.
The group last played Aotearoa in 2016 as part of the Head Full of Dreams tour.
Taylor Swift breaks silence on Eras Tour Cardiff as she boosts London economy
Taylor Swift took to social media to share glimpses of the concert in Cardiff and thanked fans for their support, calling the crowd 'truly out of control in the best way'
- 07:35, 20 Jun 2024
- Updated 13:27, 20 Jun 2024
Taylor Swift's fans have been having the time of their lives as she travelled around the UK for her Eras Tour.
The But Daddy I Love Him singer, 34, already performed on multiple dates in Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff. After her show in Cardiff ended, she took to social media to thank fans for her support with many photos of herself performing on stage in the Welsh city.
"Cardiff!! My first time playing in Wales and that was truly out of control in the best way - looking out into that massive, bouncing, dancing sea of people… I’ll never forget it. I’m absolutely living for these UK crowds. Next up: our weekend at Wembley!! See you tomorrow London!" she wrote.
One of her dancers previously took to their Instagram page to share tidbits from their time in the Welsh city, which included a clip of Taylor's concert. Photos included the group of dancers enjoying strolls through the city, shopping at independent stores and a visit to Cardiff Castle.
Karen Chuang said: "We went UP on TUESDAY! The weather was gorgeously sunny, and 67,000 of you gave us the warmest welcome we could possibly imagine. Some touristy highlights: Cardiff Castle - I always enjoy learning about important landmarks and their place in history. I also enjoy being a silly tourist with Nat, as demonstrated in the first photo.
"Royal Arcade Cardiff - So fun poking through the different stores here! We spent lots of time in Welcome Things, and found cute handcrafted gifts to bring home. The funky buildings - I noticed some buildings used a lot of mixed materials, which made them unique and memorable. I particularly liked this one with brick and tile."
The dancer added before thanking Swifties: "Cardiff Bay Wetlands - The stroll through the wetlands is easy and beautiful. I chat with a sweet and kind local who told me all about the goslings and swans that live here. THANK YOU CARDIFF for a lovely time." Meanwhile, for the next three nights, Taylor and her team will be busy playing to crowds of 90,000 people at Wembley Stadium in London, before returning to the venue for another five nights in August.
Her sold-out performances is expected to boost London's economy. Fans are travelling from all over to watch their favourite singer live and thanks to them, the economy is likely to get a £300 million boost, according to a new report. The city will have more Eras Tour shows than any other city, bringing in around 640,000 people across the dates.
In classic Taylor style, the singer provided fans with activities to entertain them ahead of her performances. Not only was a special Tube map created, but murals and a Taylor trail were also made for Swifties. Wembley Park will temporarily host a few public artworks celebrating Taylor.
The Spanish Steps will be called the Swiftie Steps and features art created by Frank Styles which have been compiled digitally from more than 30 separate physical paintings. Below the steps will be the Ready For It mural painted by MurWalls & HUMOR which features a portrait with lyrics interwoven across the artwork.
The 640,000 fans set to attend the Wembley shows are estimated to spend an average of £471 when they come to the capital, according to a report by the Greater London Authority.
The estimated £300 million total boost to London's economy was calculated using data from UKInbound's Tourism Statistics for 2018, which showed that each domestic and international tourist to the UK generated about £396 to the UK economy that year, with the individual spent figure then adjusted to bring it in line with inflation.

Taylor Swift Super Fans to Lead Themed Tours in New York and London
Taylor Swift super fans can put all that deep lore knowledge to work, thanks to new themed tours in New York and London.
GetYourGuide is calling Swifties from New York for their “Ultimate Swiftie Tour Guides” role. The candidate will “lead engaging, informative, and fun tours focusing on key locations and moments related to Taylor Swift’s life and career in New York City.”
People reported that GetYourGuide is also searching for Swifties to lead and design tours in London. Swifties are encouraged to apply by posting a video on Instagram or TikTok explaining why they should be chosen for the job and tagging #GetYourGuide and #UltimateSwiftieGuide.
“We expect stops at the Chelsea Hotel, Central Park Lake or the Black Dog in London to be prominent recommendations,” Madison Pietrowski , the U.S. director of brand at GetYourGuide, told the outlet on Wednesday, June 19.

Pietrowski also noted that the individual can choose the “best spots.” She added, “We’re also looking forward to seeing our Swiftie guide get creative with the locations and overall experience. This is a great opportunity for Swifties to use their knowledge and turn it into a side hustle.”

Swift, 34, mentioned several locales in her eleventh studio album , The Tortured Poets Department , which she released in April.
In the album’s title track, Swift croons, “I laughed in your face and said / You’re not Dylan Thomas , I’m not Patti Smith / This ain’t the Chelsea Hotel, we’re modern idiots.”
In “The Bolter,” Swift sings about spending a day in New York’s Central Park. “When it’s all roses, portrait poses / Central Park Lake in tiny rowboats / What a charming Saturday,” the lyrics read.

She also named the tune “The Black Dog” after a pub in the London neighborhood Vauxhall. “I am someone who, until recent events / You shared your secrets with / And your location / You forgot to turn it off,” she sings. “And so I watch as you walk / Into some bar called The Black Dog / And pierce new holes in my heart.”

“I’ve never been to Vauxhall,” Alwyn said in his Sunday Times Style profile, published on Saturday, June 15. The outlet reported that the actor was “smiling a smile that hints that there is more to say.”

While performing the Tortured Poets Department act of her Eras Tour in Paris in May 2024, Taylor Swift appeared in a custom Vivienne Westwood white dress . It had a fitted bodice and flowing, draped skirts scrawled in lyrics from her single, Fortnight.
While the lyrics have gained the attention of Swifties across the internet, as an expert in Georgian fashion, I was captured by the fitted bodice – a design that was known in the 18th century as stays. It’s a testament to the staying power of 18th-century trends that stays continue to be at the centre of fashion.
Since the Bridgerton effect first took hold in late 2020, fitted corset-like tops have remained in vogue. These corset tops are not inspired by the hourglass cut of 19th-century corsets, but instead the structural underwear of the 18th century.
They have been seen in runway shows and campaigns, including Anne Hathaway for Versace , worn by celebrities such as Emily Blunt , sold by high-street brands and recreated by historic clothing enthusiasts and independent makers on Etsy and Ebay.
“Stays” was the 18th-century term for corset. They were made using up to five layers of fabric including buckram and linen and were covered in wool or silk. They were structured with baleen, more commonly known as whalebone : the bendy and absorbent keratin plates from the upper palette of a whale’s mouth. Pliable like your fingernail, whalebone absorbed moisture and moulded to the body.
Like a supportive hug, stays provided fantastic bust and lower back support, while gently and comfortably shaping a woman’s torso into the conical shape that defined the 18th-century silhouette .
The visual illusion of a smaller waist was not created by tight lacing, but rather, by adding volume to the hips with hoops or panniers (side hoops). No broken ribs or smushed organs – just great posture and Wonder Bra-level cleavage.
Practically, the bust and back support helped women doing manual labour, women of genteel upbringings doing domestic tasks and those at the top of society, where standing at court events for hours was required. Functionally, gowns were not buttoned, laced or zipped (there were no zips till the 19th century), but were pinned in place. Straight pins attached the fabric of the gown to the stays, protecting the body.
Stays were worn by all women in Georgian society, not just the elite. Wealthier women bought stays that were made bespoke by staymakers. They were also available secondhand, and cheaper versions were made with reeds or out of scored leather. Some women even went as far as stealing their stays so that they could achieve the coveted figure.
Women’s morality hinged on wearing stays. The recognisable shape created by the structured undergarment was expressly interlinked with women’s moral and social standing, similar to the 19th-century concept that “cleanliness was close to godliness”. Women without stays were branded as slovenly, mentally unhinged, criminal, or of ill-repute . Wearing a pair of stays meant that a woman could participate in 18th-century society. It was a sartorial signal that she was not destitute, insane, or willing to sell sex for money.
Stays were worn throughout a woman’s life. A lighter version was worn by children from their toddler years, under the impression that an upright figure kept them safe from airborne diseases. And they could be altered and added to as women’s bodies changed, even worn during pregnancy . They were considered a fundamental necessity for 18th-century life.
Modern stays
Stays inspired by the 18th century were first revived in contemporary fashion by Vivienne Westwood in her 1988 Statue of Liberty and 1990 Portrait collections. Westwood, whose attentive and innovative use of historic pattern cutting and making techniques, was at the forefront of the underwear-as-outwear trend.
Historic underwear was reclaimed as subversive, sexy and rebellious. On the heels of the punk aesthetic, wearing historically inspired underwear made of lycra and plastic boning as outwear challenged what types of clothing society thought of as being properly dressed .
Ironically, the garment that defined a woman as morally appropriate within 18th-century society was turned on its head to defy those same definitions in the late 20th century.
The underwear-as-outerwear trend of the 2020s has become widespread , a frequently used motif of the fashion designer that is no longer narrowly associated with more subversive subcultures or fashion niches.
Its continued resurgence today – most recently in spring summer 2024 collections of Westwood , Galliano for Maison Margiela and Gaultier for Simone Rocha , and through pop culture fashion figureheads such as Taylor Swift – suggests it’s not going away any time soon. Could 18th-century inspired corset tops become as ubiquitous as stays once were? Probably not, but their revival would do excellent things for the hunched posture of our screen-obsessed society.
