2023 Tour de Suisse Stage 3 Preview

Tafers > Villars 143km

The first of three consecutive mountain stages and the bunch head for Villars-sur-Ollon. Those with a good memory will remember 2016 when Chris Froome was in his pomp, he won here in Tour de Romandie, but it was coming from a different side. Larry Warbasse won in 2017, this year it’s the same climb as that day. For those that don’t remember, it’s a very hard climb, it’s going to show who will be in contention for the yellow jersey.

Sunny and temperatures will be around 20 degrees, but cooler up the mountains. There’s a small risk of rain late in the afternoon.

Col des Mosses is up first, it’s easy for a cat 1 climb.

The climb to Villars-sur-Ollon is very difficult, there’s not many sections where riders can rest. The big moves will come will 2-3km to go.

Can the break win? Groupama – FDJ won’t be actively chasing the break, that will have to be done by another team, so we could see the big teams looking at each other for a while before someone takes up the work. The break will hope this game of poker will allow them to build a big lead and take the stage, but I would say it’s unlikely.

The first cat 1 climb is easy, this stage is all about the final mountain. 9.5km at 7.9% is tough but coming at the start of the week and in an easy stage, the gaps could be smaller than you think. All eyes will be on Evenepoel, but Soudal – Quick Step don’t have the team to control the final climb. On paper, UAE are the strongest team in the race, they should be the ones dictating the pace on the climb, they’ll see this as a big chance of taking a win with Ayuso. 

I’m looking forward to seeing how Evenepoel approaches this stage, I have no idea how his legs will respond, I’m not sure he does either. Kelderman should be good, but the climbing talent here is not as strong as the Dauphiné or most of the other big stage races this year. Anything but a win for Evenepoel or Ayuso would be a massive surprise in my book, hopefully we see them go toe-to-toe. 

Remco Evenepoel  – before the Giro he had a long period at altitude, followed by Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Since abandoning the Giro, he had a period off his bike, followed by training in Belgium. Without a shadow of a doubt, he won’t be as strong as he was in Liège, but no one really knows how good he’ll be. 

Juan Ayuso  – such a talent, he knows a good day will put him in a strong position to win the yellow jersey, it would be his first GC success as a pro. UAE have a strong team to support him, despite a few of them crashing today, I expect them to boss the final climb. Vine should be the final man, then we’ll see if the young Spaniard has what it takes to drop Evenepoel. As I mentioned in my overall preview, to compare him to Pogačar is lazy, but there’s definite similarities between the two of them. Both finished 3 rd  in the Vuelta, on grand tour debut, at 19 years of age. That was an incredible achievement, there is a feeling that Ayuso could be even better than Pogačar, you might need a stiff drink after reading that.

Wilco Kelderman  – comes here after altitude camp, the Jumbo-Visma riders usually go very well after spending a few weeks up at the top of a mountain. Kelderman has always been a huge talent, but he rarely wins, something he’d love to put right.

Romain Bardet  – form seems to be building nicely with the Tour just a matter of weeks away. He’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t finish in the top 5 in this stage, but winning will require a return to days of yonder.

Mattias Skjelmose  – 2023 has already been a brilliant year for Mattias, 2 nd  in Flèche Wallonne was my personal highlight. This race is a massive challenge for him, the three mountain stages will push him to his limit, and maybe a bit beyond. He’s another just back from altitude training, in his case he only returned on Thursday, which adds an element of doubt about his level in the opening stages of this race. Fingers crossed, he’s on a good day, and can challenge for the win.

Felix Gall  – the Austrian is in brilliant form; his reward is a new deal with AG2R. He’s been close to taking his first pro win in recent weeks, but given who he’s up against in this stage, winning will be very hard. I think if he’s improved a little from his last outing in the Mercan’Tour, he could challenge for the top 5.

Sergio Higuita  – hasn’t had a good season, despite a stage win in the Basque Country, he’s here to prove he deserves a place in the Tour de France team. I’m going to assume he’ll be at his best, that means he should be challenging for the win. 

Pello Bilbao  – another looking to get ready for the Tour de France. Bilbao rarely wins uphill finishes, I don’t see him winning this stage, a place between 5 th  and 10 th  is likely.

Tom Pidcock  – his win in Strade Bianche was brilliant, he backed that up with podium finishes in both Amstel and Liège, yet I get the feeling he would have wanted more. Since Liège, he’s been focusing on getting in shape for the Tour de France, that means getting back in the swing of climbing big mountains. If he’s here for GC (I assume he is) it’s the first time he’s done so in a race of this difficulty. Can he surprise and challenge for the win?

Mark Donovan  – breakaway hopeful number 2.

Vadim Pronskiy  – breakaway hopeful number 3.

Prediction Time

UAE to chase the break and set up a GC fight for the stage.

I’ll take a win for  Juan Ayuso , it’s time for him to shine.

Preview: Casper Ruud vs. Francisco Cerundolo - prediction, form, head-to-head

Casper Ruud takes on Francisco Cerundolo in the opening match of the 2024 Laver Cup as Team Europe aim to end Team World's two-year dominance.

The opening match-up at the Uber Arena will see the three-time Grand Slam finalist take on his Argentine opponent featuring at the event for the second time.

If Team Europe are to snap their losing record at this year's Laver Cup, then Ruud's expertise will be beneficial, with the Norwegian player having never tasted defeat in previous participations.

Ruud notched victories over Reilly Opelka in 2021, Jack Sock in 2022 and Tommy Paul 12 months back to hold a 3-0 win-loss record heading into this year's event.

Only once has he been taken to three sets in all three victories, beating Sock two years ago as Team Europe went ahead 1-0 on day one before ultimately falling to Team World on the last day of the three-day event.

The world No. 9 comes into this year's Laver Cup on the back of a fourth-round run to the US Open, losing to eventual runner-up Taylor Fritz , and a mixed Davis Cup, but he aims to give his team the advantage against Cerundolo.

Unlike his Norwegian opponent, the Argentine has not had multiple appearances at the tournament, with last year's event in Canada marking his debut.

Cerundolo beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in two sets to give Team World a 2-0 advantage on day one as they raced into a 6-0 lead before ultimately notching consecutive editions.

He seeks a second victory in his second Laver Cup match, keen to boost his team's prospects of claiming the three-day tournament for the third consecutive year.

Cerundolo's form heading into the event has been mixed, with an early exit in round two of the final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows followed by a pair of wins and a defeat in the Davis Cup last week.

The world No. 31 hopes that momentum stands him in good stead against his Norwegian opponent to land the first punch in the Laver Cup.

Ruud and Cerundolo have faced off six times on the ATP Tour , with each player winning three matches.

Not only have their clay match-ups been tied (2-2), but the same applies to their encounters on hard courts — the three-time Slam finalist claimed success in their first-ever meeting at the 2022 Miami Masters 1000 but Cerundolo beat the Norwegian in Paris last year.

Strikingly, only one of their six tussles has gone to three sets, with the victor in five match-ups getting the job done in two.

The pair's head-to-head shows that Friday's match can go either way, but we are backing Ruud's Laver Cup experience to count for something as Team Europe seek to notch the opening point at Team World's expense.

Be Prog! My Friend returns after six years away with a new-look headlined by Haken and Pain Of Salvation

After six years away, Barcelona’s premier prog festival is back. Founded in 2014, Be Prog! My Friend has since seen prog legends like Opeth , Steven Wilson , Steve Hackett and Camel grace its stage, which nestles into a quaint courtyard in Poble Espnayol, the city’s historic open-air architectural museum. 

Its return shows you how much it’s been missed by the city’s progressive community. Back with a new-look format that continues to place up-and-coming acts on the same platform as the genre’s luminaries, the festival has long since sold out. 

Presenting eight bands across two days, from local exports to one of the finest contemporary progressive metal acts going, there’s plenty of variety considering its bite-size billing. Haken , a band who first performed way down the bill at Be Prog! 2015 this time headline the Friday night, delivering thee hours of big hits and deep cuts across two “prog heavy” sets. 

“You can look at it as two bands,” says vocalist Ross Jennings. “We're playing [latest album] Fauna in its entirety, followed by second full-length performance of some of our favourite Haken songs. And it’s very prog heavy, so it should please everyone! 

“ Fauna represents a lot of the different styles that we’ve brought to Haken over the years,” he expands. “It’s a nod to the earlier days and there are sounds on there that not to the future of the Haken sound. It feels like a very eclectic mix of styles, so it’s almost like a greatest hits in itself.”

Reflecting on their 2015 performance, which saw the band crammed onto a makeshift second stage, Jennings sees their return as an “extra special” full circle moment. Above all, he sees events like these as vital for the genre’s growth. 

“Despite the growth of prog over the years, it can be quite difficult for bands to grow to a big level; it's nice to have our own tent to play under where you know the people are coming are for you. I think it's very important for the bands to have opportunities to play like this.”

So, who else is playing, and what can the attending proggers expect from its two days of musical delights? 

Friday 27th September 

Obsidian Kingdom 

Hometown prog darlings, Obsidian Kingdom live in a swirl of beautifully avant-garde ambience, borrowing at times from the intricate meditations of post-rock and the scathing weirdness of noise rock. They’ll be playing their delightful 2014 debut album/ Mantiis// in full, a record rich with well-paced progressive arcs and genre-blurring journeys that leave no stone unturned. 

Kingcrow 

Italy's Kingcrow embody pretty much everything there is to love about the contemporary prog metal scene. Huge, engaging vocal melodies tower above their landscapes which see oddly grooving guitars and lush waves of keyboards overlap. As new album, //Hopium//, proves, their songs that are as catchy as they are complex. But more importantly, beneath their clever riffs and emotional lyrical narratives is a bloody great rock band ready to flex their muscles on any stage that will have them.    

Pure Reason Revolution

Rick Wakeman -approved British progressive alt rockers Pure Reason Revolution have garnered great momentum since their 2018 reunion and have, with their twisting new concept record, Coming Up To Consciousness now matched their trio of pre-hiatus records since reforming. 

Equal parts soundscaping artistry for films that don't exist, electronic hues and throbbing guitar riffs, all iced by Jon Courtney and Annicke Shireen's poetic two-headed vocals, their melting pot is brimming with diversity. Be Prog! is the perfect setting for their storytelling. 

Haken 

Bringing their celebrated ‘An evening with…’ shows to a close under a Barcelonian skyline seems like a fitting end to what has been a gruelling tour for Britain’s progressive metal masterminds. The band will present two sets equating to three hours of maze-like song structures and a sound that takes in everything from breezy Gentle Giant melodies and fizzing ‘80s pomp to savage, machinery mimicking riffwork. 

The first set will see the band perform their latest album, Fauna in full, which was described by Prog as being “colossal, detailed and dizzyingly diverse.” The band had penned the record with “no filter” meaning no idea was considered too crazy to be considered, and what results is a record that finds Haken at their most ambitious and catchiest, so it’s no wonder they’re eager to play it in full on any stage they can.

The second set will deliver a career-wide selection of their finest material, with each of their other six records – and one EP – getting a look in. Alongside fan and band favourites, a selection of deep cuts will also rear their head, as will songs that have never been played before. For Haken fans, and indeed lovers of progressive music in any of its forms, the two-part showcase is set to be a celebration of everything the genre can be.     

Saturday 28th September 

Masterminded by two veterans of the Spanish progressive underground scene, the nexus of TodoMal's music can be found where the roads of dark doom and psychedelic-tinted prog intersect. Their slow-burning yet oddly uplifting gothic anthems back the punch of sludgy riffs and the statesman-like prowess of enveloping keyboard textures and philosophising lyrics in equal measure.

Alkaloid 

Featuring current and former members of the technical death metal elite, including Obscura, Necrophagist, and Blotted Science, Alkaloid are showing how well complexity, extreme metal and progressive ambitions can blend together. 

As their music has evolved, they’ve dialled back the more visceral of their moments, slithering instead down cosmic prog expanses without betraying their hard-as-nails musical backbone. They’re a band that doesn’t tour extensively, so this isn’t a set to be missed.

Dødheimsgard

Self-described as a “raw Norwegian black metal band,” that label downplays how important avant garde flavours and progressive structures are to their unique take on one of metal's most viscous subgenres. Sure, there are blast beats and emotive trem picked guitars aplenty at their core, but their ability to spin off into different directions should be applauded. Across their sprawling songwr

Pain of Salvation

Across a near 30-year career, Pain of Salvation 's dark and poetic take on a sound which nestles on the border between prog rock and metal have proved one of the scenes most vital proponents. Their last record, 2020's Panther , saw the Swede's ringleader Daniel Gildenlöw confronting his neurodiversity having been diagnosed with ADHD. Moreover, they did it through a technicolour – yet always dark and grungy – mesh of jittering rhythms, discomfort able turns and vocal-driven songs. 

What you get with Pain of Salvation is song first, story-focused craftsmanship, with the band's deftness for knotted technicality, dynamic ebbs and flows and an ever-shifting moodiness used to propel their music and its interwoven messages. 

Prog scribe Holly Wright called Gildenlöw's lyrics “philosophical and self-exploratory,” without being “self-pitying” in her piece on Panther’s creation. It's a damningly accurate description, and it's around those lyrics that their skilful musicianship coils. The Swedish stalwarts have earned their spot at the top of the bill, and will no doubt bring the festival's return to a theatrical and evocative close.   

The venue has been moved to a different spot in the open-air architectural museum of Poble Espanyol to cater for the 1,000 capacity event. Four bands will perform each day at the single-stage event. Doors open at 4pm each day, and the first band due to start at 4.50pm. The headline shows will conclude by approximately 11.30pm. 

LINE-UP FRIDAY 27 SEPTEMBER (Doors at 4pm) Obsidian Kingdom, Kingcrow, Pure Reason Revolution, Haken

LINE-UP SATURDAY 28 SEPTEMBER (Doors at 4pm) TodoMal, Alkaloid, Dødheimsgard, Pain of Salvation

LOCATION: The festival takes place at Poble Espanyol, Av Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, 13, 08038, Barcelona, Spain. It’s a 30 minute walk from the city’s infamous Las Ramblas street and has easy access via public transport. 

TRAVEL: The closest airport is Barcelona, which is 7.5 miles away. Public transport is recommended to reach the festival site. The closest metro station is Espanya, a 10 minute walk from the venue. The nearest bus stop is called Poble. There is ample private parking for those arriving by car. 

DISABLED ACCESS: There’s a disabled viewing area at the event.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS: With the festival site opening at 4pm each day, there’s time to explore the city beforehand. Food and drinks can be purchased within the venue too, with a range of dietary requirements catered for. 

ACCOMMODATION: Please note that Be Prog! is not a camping festival. Instead, try local hotels or Airbnb for a place to rest your music filled head. 

ABOUT THE LOCATION: Built in 1929, Poble Espanyol is designed to look like a historic Spanish village, with replicas of buildings from different regions. Stage 8: Adam Yates wins Tour de Suisse , João Almeida victorious in final time trial / As it happened

The battle for the overall victory at the  2024 Tour de Suisse  would come down to the final climb of the eight-day race, with UAE Team Emirates teammates  Adam Yates  and  João Almeida  battling on the stage 8 time trial, run on a largely uphill 15.7km course to Villars-sur-Ollon. In the end, Almeida was the fastest in the time trial to win the stage, while Yates secured the overall victory.

UAE Team Emirates  once again showed their strength at the  Tour de Suisse  as  Adam Yates  and  João Almeida  crossed the line together to finish one-two at the race’s final mountain stage at Villars-sur-Ollon.

Joao Almeida  (UAE Team Emirates) has stormed to a solo win ahead of teammate and race leader Adam Yates on a severely weather-shortened stage 6 of the  Tour de Suisse .

Stage 5: Adam Yates extends lead with dominant summit finish / As it happened

Adam Yates  (UAE Team Emirates) cemented his lead at the  Tour de Suisse  by soloing to victory on the summit finish at Carì on stage 5. The Briton was teed up for victory by a remarkable stint of pace-making from his teammate  João Almeida,  who helped himself to second place on the day, just five seconds down.

Stage 4: Torstein Træen claims a solo summit finish victory / As it happened Breakaway Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) fended off a rampaging Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) to claim an emotional stage win at the summit of the Gotthardpass. Træen took off around 10 kilometres from the top of the snowcapped pass to claim a victory in honour of the memory of the late Gino Mader, who died tragically in the course of the race last year. Yates counter-charge from the peloton took the Briton to second place at the summit, 23 seconds back and he moved into the overall lead. Stage 3: Thibau Nys takes a small group sprint / As it happened Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) used a powerful sprint to clinch the victory in stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse on an uphill finish, holding off Stevie Williams (Israel Premier Tech) and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost). Bettiol nonetheless moved into the overall lead after the peloton split on the rugged finale around  Rüschlikon Stage 2: Bryan Coquard wins stage 2 sprint / As it happened

Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) powered to his first victory of the season on stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse, jumping away from Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) in the final 150 metres as the Belgian suffered the most untimely mechanical when starting his sprint. De Lie managed to restring and take third behind the Frenchman and Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla).

Stage 1: Yves Lampaert wins stage 1 time trial / As it happened

Yves Lampaert  (Soudal-QuickStep) clocked a time of 5:05 on the flat 4.77 km course in Vaduz to win the opening stage and take the first yellow jersey of the 2024 Tour de Suisse. Stefan Bissegger (EF Education-Easy Post) was second, three seconds slower and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) in third place.

About the Tour de Suisse

Taking place June 9-16, 2024 the 87th Tour de Suisse is all about the mountains. Like its counterpart held in France, Critérium du Dauphiné , the Tour de Suisse is also used by pro teams and riders as a tuneup for the Tour de France .

Last year, Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) won stage 3 on the summit finish at Villars-sur-Ollon and claimed his first WorldTour stage race. Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), winner of two stages, finished second overall,  nine seconds back. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) was third.

Team Ineos Grenadiers won the three editions of the race, from 2019 to 2022.  In 2022, Geraint Thomas overhauled leader Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) in the stage 8 time trial to take the overall victory. Thomas went on to finish third at the Tour de France.

In 2021, Richard Carapaz took over the race lead following his stage 5 victory. The Ecuadorian then held onto his lead through the final three stages, including a mountainous final stage to Andermatt, to win the overall title. Carapaz finished third that year at the Tour.

Egan Bernal won the Tour de Suisse in 2019  and went on to win the Tour de France that year.

The Tour de Suisse, first raced in 1933, did not take place in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Before Bernal, the last Tour winner to ride in Switzerland as preparation for the Tour had been 2010 winner Andy Schleck, with the Critérium du Dauphiné often favoured as it allows for a longer recovery.

Slovakian Peter Sagan has the most stage wins, with 18, but never took the overall title. Three riders are tied with 11 stage wins, and they all came away with overall victories - the 2009 overall winner Fabian Cancellara, three-time winner Hugo Koblet (1950, 1953, 1955) and three-time champion Ferdinand Kübler (1942, 1948, 1951). Italian Pasquale Fornara is the leader in both number of overall victories, four times in the 1950s, and has spent the most days in the leader’s jersey, 17.

PREVIEW | Tour de Suisse 2023 stage 3 - Evenepoel's first climbing test since Giro d'Italia abandon

Preview . On stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse the race heads into the mountains. The summit finish in Villars-sur-Ollon will be very important in the fight for the overall classification and will set the early situation for the race.

Villars-sur-Ollon has seen the likes of Chris Froome win atop it, and it returns for the 2023 edition. The 143-kilometer day is mostly flat and a lead-up to the final climb, but here the overall classification will be turned on it's head and the contenders for the victory will emerge.

Departure and arrival times (estimated CET):

- June 13 - Stage 3: Tafers - Villars-sur-Ollon, 143.8km. From 1:40 p.m. to 5:20 p.m.

Biniam Girmay returns to winning ways with scintillating sprint victory on stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse

In it's essence, it's a very simple and mostly calm day. Most of the stage is flat, until the Col des Mosses where the riders find 13.5 kilometers at 4.1%. Not the easiest of climbs with some harder gradients, but it won't be a burning effort. It ends with 35.5 kilometers to go and a long descent follows into Aigle where the UCI is based, shortly after to reach the final ascent.

This is one where massive watts are expected. A calm day, constant but steep climb, Villars-sur-Ollon will see fireworks. 10.7 kilometers at 7.8%, it's a constant ascent but one that does feature a few hairpins. Important gaps will be carved in this ascent, and those who need the climbs to make their bid for overall victory absolutely have to attack the race.

The Weather

A tiny breeze from the northwest, it shouldn't have an effect on the day. It's quite possible that there will be some rain which can cause some tension in the one descent of the day, however it should all end up with a regular finale.

Profiles & Route Tour de Suisse 2023

The Favourites

Remco Evenepoel - Form, form, form... How will Evenepoel be? The time-trial is little indication to be honest, he is a clear specialist and the route was pan-flat. My question hence remains the same as in the opening day, only after this stage can we judge how well the World Champion is doing. Last year he finished outside the Top10 here and similar could be possible.

UAE Team Emirates - Form is a question for both leaders. Jay Vine has just came off of the Giro d'Italia, where his form widely varied. Hence it's a big question how he'll show himself here, but if he does have good legs this is exactly the kind of day that'll suit him. As for Juan Ayuso he restarted competition only in Romandie, there he looked brilliant in the time-trial but not so good in the climbs. His form will surely have improved since, but as many others he also surely doesn't know exactly where he stands.

Mattias Skjelmose - The sixth place in the opening time-trial was a great display of power from the Dane, I have high expectations of him. Simultaneously I think that the longer climbs are still a meaningful challenge to him, he may crack, but he may also take the win judging by how well he rode in the spring this year.

Sergio Higuita - Higuita has been very inconsistent this year, there's no certainty that he'll be up there tomorrow even if the stage suits him. Last year the Colombian was on fire here, he entered the final time-trial in the yellow jersey and finished second. If he shows the same legs back again he will be a contender for victory.

TV Guide - Where and When to watch Tour de Suisse 2023

Bahrain - Victorious - Pello Bilbao and Gino Mäder lead the team coming into the mountain stage, having two options provides the possibility for some tactical play however it's unlikely that they will be in the fight for the win. Nevertheless the podium is quite possible, this is a pure climbing test whilst other finales will see the team more able to use their numbers.

Neilson Powless - Rigoberto Urán could be an option but EF will certainly put their utmost focus on Powless. For the Grand Tours there are no guarantees but here the American will be a big favourite for the GC and judging by his spring a very consistent rider too. It'll be an important ride but I trust he'll be up to the challenge.

The GC fight will truly open up here and it's set to be an explosive stage. The day is very easy on the riders, and the final climb will be very fast. As everyone will be gauging their level I don't expect anyone taking many risks, but many possible podium contenders still lay outside of the names above. Felix Gall , Wilco Kelderman and Romain Bardet are almost certainly names to take into consideration for the tops pots.

Alexey Lutsenko , Ion Izagirre , Ben Tulett and possibly Rui Costa are also among the outsiders for the day. Here others can also be discovered in the fight for the GC, but the main figures are present and will hope for a good day.

Avec Riccardo Rodriguez dès la 46e minute, le Real Betis s'est imposé mercredi soir en match en retard de la 5e journée de Liga contre Getafe (2-1). L'Argentin Giovani Lo Celso a marqué les deux buts sévillans (pen., 61e et 74e), alors que Arambarri (93e) a réduit la marque pour les visiteurs. L’Italien Stefano Pioli a été nommé entraîneur du club saoudien Al-Nassr, où évolue Cristiano Ronaldo , au lendemain du limogeage du Portugais Luis Castro, d’après un communiqué publié sur X par l’équipe basée à Ryad. Le Belge Wout Van Aert  a annoncé mercredi qu’il prolongeait «à vie» son contrat qui devait expirer en 2026 avec l’équipe Visma-Lease a Bike .

«Je me sens comme chez moi dans cette équipe. Elle est unique et je m’y épanouis depuis cinq ans. C’est pourquoi j’ai décidé de rester ici pour toujours et ça fait vraiment plaisir», a déclaré le Flamand de 30 ans dans un communiqué.

Alors que des spéculations l’envoyaient notamment chez Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe, Van Aert devrait ainsi terminer sa carrière avec l’équipe néerlandaise qu’il avait rejoint en 2019, tout en se projetant déjà sur «un partenariat à long terme» au-delà de sa trajectoire sportive.

L’ AS Rome , en difficulté dans le championnat italien de football, a annoncé avoir licencié mercredi son entraîneur Daniele De Rossi avec effet immédiat «dans l’intérêt de l’équipe».

«La décision du club a été prise dans l’intérêt de l’équipe pour pouvoir reprendre rapidement le parcours souhaité, à un moment où la saison n’est qu’à son début», indique sur son site internet l’AS Rome, actuelle 16e de Serie A.

Jan Cadieux sera sur le banc de Genève-Servette

L’entraîneur de Genève-Servette Jan Cadieux sera sur le banc de son équipe mardi soir en ouverture de la saison à Lausanne. Son père, le légendaire Paul-André Cadieux, s’est éteint lundi à l’âge de 77 ans des suites d’une maladie. Un hommage suivi d’une minute d’applaudissements auront lieu avant le derby lémanique à la Vaudoise aréna.

Paul-André Cadieux a marqué l’histoire du hockey helvétique. Il était arrivé en Suisse en 1970 et y avait lancé son immense carrière au CP Berne en tant qu’entraîneur-joueur. Il a plus tard guidé Fribourg-Gottéron à trois reprises en finale des playoffs dans les années 90, et a aussi œuvré au sein du Lausanne HC ainsi que de Genève-Servette.

L’Olympique de Marseille a officialisé mardi la signature du milieu de terrain international français Adrien Rabiot , avec qui il avait annoncé dès dimanche avoir un «accord de principe». Un premier succès pour Lugano ++ Florian Wirtz prouve sa valeur

Lugano lance sa saison

Lugano a signé son premier succès de la saison de National League. A domicile, les Tessinois ont battu Davos 4-2.

Cette partie fut à lire par blocs. Il y eut d'abord la domination tessinoise du tiers médian avec deux buts en 89 secondes entre la 32e et la 34e grâce aux défenseurs Alatalo et Dahlström. Puis au cours de la troisième période, ce fut le réveil grison avec deux réussites en 18 secondes à la 46e par Honka et Frehner. Ou comment se relancer totalement en un laps de temps très court.

Et les Davosiens bénéficiaient d'un jeu de puissance pour prendre les devants à moins de cinq minutes de la fin. Seulement Fora s'est compromis à la bleue et sur le retour de pénalité, Alatalo s'est présenté seul face à van Pottelberghe et Dahlbeck a fait faute.

Sur le penalty logiquement accordé, Fazzini a réussi un petit bijou en déposant le puck en lucarne pour le 3-2. Marco Müller a scellé le score dans la cage vide.

Leverkusen s'offre une soirée de gala

Le Bayer Leverkusen a commencé sa campagne en Ligue des champions de fort belle manière. Le champion d'Allemagne s'est imposé 4-0 à Feyenoord.

Etoile offensive de Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz a prouvé que sa valeur de 130 millions d'euros n'était pas usurpée. A Rotterdam, l'allemand de 21 ans a parfaitement réussi son premier match en Ligue des champions, il lui a fallu un peu moins de cinq minutes pour ouvrir la marque d'un joli tir d'environ 18 mètres.

A la 36e minute, Wirtz s'est offert un doublé d'une reprise de volée dans la surface après un contre rapide ponctué d'un centre d'Alejandro Grimaldo, l'auteur du 2-0 (30e). Latéral, Jordan Lotomba n'a pas réussi sa meilleure prestation dans les rangs bataves. Il a d'ailleurs été remplacé à la 61e.

Du côté de Leverkusen, Granit Xhaka a disputé les 80 premières minutes et a comme d'habitude touché beaucoup de ballons.

Dans l'autre match de 18h45, Benfica s'est imposé 2-1 sur le terrain de l'Etoile Rouge Belgrade. Zeki Amdouni est entré à la 88e minute pour les Portugais.

La rue de l'Allianz Arena rebaptisée à la mémoire Beckenbauer

Une rue, située le long de l'Allianz Arena, le stade du Bayern Munich, sera rebaptisée à la mémoire du géant du foot allemand Franz Beckenbauer. Le conseil municipal de Munich l'a annoncé.

Décédé le 7 janvier dernier à l'âge de 78 ans, Beckenbauer, surnommé "Der Kaiser" (l'Empereur) est considéré comme l'un des plus grands joueurs de football de tous les temps.

L'ancien milieu reconverti en libéro, a remporté la Coupe du monde en tant que joueur et entraîneur, ainsi que l'Euro et un Ballon d'Or. Au cours de ses 13 années passées au Bayern, le Munichois a remporté trois Coupes d'Europe et quatre titres de champion d'Allemagne, avant d'en gagner un autre avec Hambourg en 1981-82.

Une partie de la rue, actuellement appelée Werner Heisenberg Allee, qui longe le stade dans le nord de la ville, sera appelée "Franz Beckenbauer Platz" et l'adresse du stade, qui doit accueillir la finale de la Ligue des champions en mai 2025, va également changer pour devenir "5, place Franz Beckenbauer", soit son numéro de maillot sur le terrain.

Le conseil municipal de Munich a annoncé que le changement prendrait effet le 7 janvier 2025, date du premier anniversaire de la mort du footballeur.

Beckenbauer devrait également être honoré par une statue à l'extérieur du stade, à côté de celle de Gerd Müller, buteur légendaire du Bayern et ancien coéquipier.

Luna Rossa se qualifie pour la finale

Favoris, les Italiens du défi Luna Rossa ont enfin obtenu jeudi leur ticket pour la finale de la Coupe Louis-Vuitton. Ils ont battu America Magic pour l'emporter 5-3.

Les barreurs Jimmy Spithill et Francesco Bruni affronteront à partir du 26 septembre Britannia, qualifié la veille après leur victoire face à Alinghi.

Victime d'une grave avarie mercredi lors d'une régate, Luna Rossa a remis le bateau en état de marche pour cette ultime journée d'affrontements face à American Magic. "Cette victoire revient à notre équipe technique, ils ont travaillé toute la nuit. On est arrivé ce matin en découvrant des zombies dans le hangar... c'était la meilleure façon de les récompenser", a déclaré Jimmy Spithill.

Lors de l'unique manche de la journée, American Magic a pris le meilleur départ, mais deux virements ratés ont permis à Luna Rossa de prendre vingt secondes d'avance à la première bouée.

Solides, les Italiens ont petit à petit accentué leur avance pour afficher une minute de moins que leur concurrent au passage de la marque d'arrivée.

Le vainqueur de la finale de la Coupe Louis Vuitton entre Britannia et Luna Rossa deviendra le challenger de Team New-Zealand, double tenant du titre, lors de la 37e édition de la Coupe de l'America en octobre.

Formule E: Sébastien Buemi reste chez Envision Racing

Sébastien Buemi courra encore pour le team Envision Racing la saison prochaine en formule E. Le Vaudois et son coéquipier néerlandais Robin Frijns ont été confirmé à leur poste.

Buemi (35 ans) entamera ainsi une onzième saison en formule électrique. Il roule dans ce championnat depuis sa création. "En tant qu'équipe, nous avons progressé de manière significative en fin de saison. On va continuer à pousser pour être compétitifs pour la première course à Sao Paulo", a déclaré le pilote suisse sur le site de son team.

Sébastien Buemi compte 13 victoires en formule E, ainsi qu'un titre de champion acquis lors de la saison 2. Mais son dernier succès dans la discipline remonte au 13 juillet 2019 à New York.

Mönchengladbach: Jonas Omlin à nouveau sur le flanc

Jonas Omlin (30 ans) est à nouveau blessé. Le gardien suisse du Borussia Mönchengladbach a été touché aux tendons d'une jambe lors d'un entraînement, a annoncé le club allemand.

Omlin sera indisponible jusqu'à nouvel avis. L'entraîneur Gerardo Seoane n'a pas pu donner plus de précisions sur la durée de l'absence de son gardien. Le portier suisse avait manqué de nombreux matches la saison dernière en raison d'une blessure à une épaule.

World Tour: Elise Chabbey courra chez FDJ-Suez dès l'an prochain

La Genevoise Elise Chabbey (31 ans) changera d'équipe la saison prochaine. Elle s'est en effet engagée pour deux ans avec la formation française FDJ-Suez.

"J'ai le sentiment que j'ai besoin d'un changement dans ma carrière pour tirer le maximum de moi et gagner quelques courses", a écrit la cycliste sur son compte Instagram. Elle portait depuis 2021 les couleurs de l'équipe Canyon/SRAM Racing.

Elise Chabbey reste sur une saison 2024 assez difficile. Elle a dû abandonner le Tour d'Italie et le Tour de France à chaque fois après des chutes. Elle est aussi tombée lors des Jeux olympiques et a dû se contenter du 18e rang de la course en ligne. La Genevoise espère avoir davantage de réussite prochainement lors des Mondiaux à Zurich.

Coco Gauff se sépare de son entraîneur Brad Gilbert

La championne de l'US Open 2023 Coco Gauff (WTA 6) et son entraîneur Brad Gilbert ont mis un terme à leur collaboration, ont-ils annoncé sur leur compte X. Cette association aura duré 14 mois.

La décision de l'Américaine de 20 ans intervient après une série de mauvais résultats cet été: éliminations en 8es de finale à Wimbledon, aux Jeux olympiques de Paris, au WTA 1000 de Toronto et à l'US Open, et élimination dès le 1er tour au WTA 1000 de Cincinnati.

"Merci Brad, nous avons vécu une expérience incroyable et je te souhaite le meilleur pour la suite", a annoncé sur son compte X Coco Gauff, qui a chuté de la 2e place mondiale en juin à la 6e aujourd'hui. "Merci à Coco Gauff et à toute son équipe pour cet été 2023 absolument incroyable et pour les incroyables efforts déployés par toute l'équipe pendant 14 mois", a de son côté posté Gilbert.

Avant son été 2024 très décevant, Coco Gauff avait réussi dans la première moitié de cette année à atteindre les demi-finales de l'Open d'Australie et de Roland-Garros, pour se hisser début juin au rang de no 2 mondial.

Avant d'entraîner notamment Andre Agassi et Andy Murray, Brad Gilbert (63 ans) a en tant que joueur été en quart de finale à l'US Open en 1987 et à Wimbledon en 1990, l'année où il a atteint le meilleur classement de sa carrière: 4e mondial.

Ligue des champions: un Monaco - Barcelone prometteur

De retour en Ligue des champions après presque six ans d'absence, l'AS Monaco va commencer fort. Le club de la Principauté accueille en effet le FC Barcelone ce soir au stade Louis-II (21h00).

Adi Hütter, l'entraîneur qui avait mené les Young Boys au titre en 2018 (le premier des Bernois depuis 1986), et ses trois Suisses (Philipp Köhn, Denis Zakaria, Breel Embolo) auront affaire à très forte partie. Le Barça a débuté la Liga en fanfare, avec cinq succès en autant de matches.

Le potentiel offensif des Catalans, avec notamment l'éternel buteur polonais Robert Lewandowski et la pépite Lamine Yamal (17 ans), est impressionnant. Barcelone a ainsi marqué 17 buts depuis le début de saison en Liga. "C'est très fort ce qu'ils font, reconnaît le capitaine monégasque Denis Zakaria. Quant à Yamal, il m'impressionne pour son âge. Mais je suis sûr qu'on peut leur poser des problèmes."

L'autre affiche de la soirée se jouera à Bergame. L'Atalanta, victorieuse de l'Europa League au printemps, recevra Arsenal. Les Gunners auront avantage à se méfier face aux Italiens, toujours très inspirés sur le plan tactique.

Le Bayer Leverkusen de Granit Xhaka entamera la compétition par un déplacement à Rotterdam face au Feyenoord. Zeki Amdouni et Benfica Lisbonne joueront à Belgrade contre l'Etoile Rouge, alors que la partie entre Brest et Sturm Graz pourrait voir les Suisses Edimilson Fernandes et Grégory Wüthrich être aux prises. Le programme sera complété par l'affrontement entre deux habitués de la compétition, à savoir l'Atlético Madrid et le RB Leipzig.

Théo Rochette: "J'ai travaillé la puissance"

Auteur d'un doublé décisif mardi soir lors du derby contre Genève, Théo Rochette a commencé sa deuxième saison à Lausanne de la meilleure des manières. Le centre de 22 ans a bien travaillé cet été.

Il était arrivé au LHC l'an dernier avec une Coupe Mémorial dans ses bagages et une saison à plus de 100 points. En 47 matches de saison régulière avec Lausanne, Théo Rochette avait atteint les 30 points (12 buts). Un très honnête total pour un joueur de son âge. Il avait ajouté 9 points en 19 parties de play-off, mais avait souffert physiquement en finale contre Zurich.

Alors cet été, le numéro 90 a travaillé pour être prêt à être dominant dans une ligue de plus en plus compétitive. "J'ai pris à peine un ou deux kilos, mais j'ai travaillé la puissance pour être plus rapide et plus explosif, confie le jeune homme. Je le sens sur la glace et ça me donne de la confiance quand je patine, je sens que je suis plus rapide que l'année passée."

Cette rapidité, Théo Rochette l'a parfaitement démontrée sur le 2-1 mardi face à Genève-Servette. Parfaitement lancé par Damien Riat, il a su prendre de vitesse la défense pour se retrouver en bonne position et battre Robert Mayer.

Mieux préparé que la saison dernière, Théo Rochette sait qu'il a toujours dû se battre et que même s'il possède des qualités techniques et une vision de premier ordre, rien ne lui est offert sur un plateau.

"J'ai toujours été le plus petit dans toutes les catégories par lesquelles je suis passé, note l'ancien capitaine des Remparts de Québec. Je pense que je m'en suis toujours très bien sorti. Maintenant c'est sûr que je veux ajouter du poids, mais je ne veux pas perdre cette vitesse. Je veux travailler en puissance avant de travailler en masse. Et la force va m'aider sur le long terme."

Contraint de composer sans Antti Suomela, blessé, Geoff Ward n'a pas hésité à envoyer son jeune joueur au centre de la première ligne avec Oksanen et Riat. Et cette promotion n'a pas fait peur au numéro 90: "On a connu l'alignement entre le match en Hongrie et le premier match de championnat. Ca fait plaisir de voir que le coach a confiance en moi. J'avais déjà joué avec Damien (réd: Riat) l'année passée, donc on se connaît un peu. Quant à Oksanen, c'est un nouveau joueur qui travaille très fort qui est bon dans les bandes. Il trouve toujours une façon de récupérer le puck et il a une bonne vision du jeu."

Le retour d'Antti Suomela pour les matches du week-end devrait rebrasser les cartes et l'alignement. Mais Théo Rochette a prouvé mardi qu'il avait les épaules pour tenir un rôle d'importance à Lausanne dans le futur.

Ligue des champions: match fermé à Manchester

Très attendu, le choc entre Manchester City et l'Inter Milan s'est conclu sur un décevant 0-0 lors de la 1re journée de Ligue des champions. Le match a été fermé et peu spectaculaire.

Les Italiens ont livré une prestation défensive impeccable à l'Etihad, frustrant leurs adversaires. Yann Sommer n'a pas été submergé de travail, mais il a répondu présent quand il a été sollicité. Pour City, Manuel Akanji a réussi quelques interventions défensives importantes. Erling Haaland, pour sa part, est resté muet pour la première fois de la saison.

Finaliste malheureux au printemps, le Borussia Dortmund de Gregor Kobel est bien parti en s'imposant 3-0 sur la pelouse du FC Bruges. Le remplaçant anglais Gittens a signé un doublé (76e/86e) et Guirassy a scellé le score (95e/penalty).

Bologne, avec Remo Freuler et Dan Ndoye, a dû se contenter d'un nul 0-0 à domicile contre Shakhtar Donetsk. Les Italiens ont dominé sans pouvoir concrétiser. Leur gardien Skorupski a retenu un penalty à la 4e. Le Paris Saint-Germain a battu Gérone 1-0 grâce à une réussite de Nuno Mendes à la 91e, sur une grosse bourde du gardien Gazzaniga qui avait jusque-là été excellent.

National League: bon départ du CP Berne

Le CP Berne a réussi son entrée dans la saison 2024/25 de National League. Dans leur antre, les Ours ont battu les Langnau Tigers 3-1 lors de la 1re journée.

Ce premier derby bernois de l'exercice n'a pas laissé beaucoup de place à l'incertitude. L'équipe locale a pris les devants dès la 11e par Lehmann, avant de creuser l'écart sur des réussites de Ritzmann (23e) et Baumgartner (28e), ce dernier en double supériorité numérique.

Les visiteurs ont certes repris un peu espoir avec la réduction du score de Lapinskis (35e). Mais l'ours bernois tenait solidement son os et n'a rien lâché pour s'offrir un premier succès

Super League: Lugano s'impose 2-1 à Lausanne

Lugano s'est imposé 2-1 sur la pelouse du Lausanne-Sport en match en retard de Super League. Ces trois points propulsent les bianconeri en tête du classement, avec une longueur d'avance sur Servette.

Les Tessinois ont mérité leur succès face à un LS assez décevant. Ils ont ouvert le score grâce à un autogoal de Poaty (39e) avant de s'assurer la totalité de l'enjeu avec la réussite d'Aliseda (77e). Les Vaudois ont tenté de réagir en fin de rencontre, avec un poteau d'Ajdini (84e) puis la réduction du score de Diabaté (92e). Mais il était trop tard...

Les hommes de Ludovic Magnin, qui disposent de la défense la plus perméable du championnat avec déjà quinze buts encaissés, restent ainsi scotchés dans le bas du classement, avec seulement quatre unités à leur compteur. Seuls les Young Boys, tenants du titre, en ont récolté moins, en l'occurrence trois.

Arsenal: le capitaine Odegaard blessé

Martin Odegaard (Arsenal) sera indisponible "pour un certain temps" en raison de la blessure contractée avec la Norvège à une cheville. "Un des ligaments" a été touché, a dit le manager Mikel Arteta.

Le meneur offensif de 25 ans s'est tordu la cheville gauche en début de semaine dernière contre l'Autriche. Le médecin de sa sélection avait évoqué en général "au minimum trois semaines" d'absence pour ce type de blessure.

"Après des examens récents, les scanners ont montré des dégâts en particulier au niveau d'un des ligaments de la cheville", a déclaré Arteta à la veille du premier match des "Gunners" en Ligue des champions contre l'Atalanta. Cette blessure, "c'est quelque chose d'assez important et nous allons donc le perdre pour un certain temps", a-t-il ajouté devant les journalistes présents à Bergame.

C'est fini pour Alinghi, battu en sept matches par Britannia

Alinghi ne remportera pas une troisième Coupe de l'America en 2024. Le défi suisse a été éliminé mercredi en demi-finale de la Coupe Louis Vuitton, battu en sept matches (5-2) par Britannia.

L'espoir d'une "remontada" n'aura donc pas duré bien longtemps. Alinghi, qui avait profité d'une erreur commise par le bateau britannique dans le troisième bord pour s'adjuger le cinquième match lundi, s'est pourtant donné le droit d'y croire encore en cueillant un deuxième point mercredi en début d'après-midi.

Mais le légendaire barreur britannique Ben Ainslie et ses équipiers ont maîtrisé leur sujet sur le plan tactique dans la septième régate de ce duel prévu au meilleur des neuf matches. Britannia a de nouveau semblé intouchable, comme lors des quatre premières courses samedi et dimanche derniers, et s'est imposé avec 1'10 d'avance.

Lancé en décembre 2021, le projet mené par Alinghi et le constructeur de Formule 1 Red Bull Racing n'a donc pas abouti malgré un immense travail fourni notamment à Barcelone où l'on a établi sa base il y a plus de deux ans. Le défi cher à Ernetso Bertarelli n'aura gagné que cinq matches avec enjeu sur les 15 qu'il a disputés dans cette Coupe Louis Vuitton.

Pour Britannia, l'aventure continue en revanche. Le défi britannique, stoppé par Luna Rossa en finale des Challengers en 2021 lors de l'édition précédente, devrait retrouver le bateau italien au même stade. Le vainqueur de ce duel - prévu dès le 26 septembre au meilleur des 13 matches - défiera le Defender Team New Zealand dans la Coupe de l'America (dés le 12 octobre).
