Lol I had no idea! But iOS is so intuitive, you can even press things out of nowhere on a 3D Touch-less device!
Cool! I didn’t know this :) [doublepost=1515101359][/doublepost] I missed that one! How do I do that?

On a Mac, using Safari you can also either click and hold the + icon at the right of your tabs, or just quickly press ⌘⇧T to open your last-closed tab. In fact, you can keep hitting that combo and it will keep opening other recently-closed tabs.

How to reopen closed Safari tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Updated on:

  • Safari tabs can be accidentally closed due to human error, app crashes, or software glitches.
  • You can easily restore closed Safari tabs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac using the Recently Closed Tabs list or History tab.
  • iPhone offers an accessibility feature, Shake to Undo, that can quickly reopen your recently closed tab.

Have you accidentally closed an important tab in Safari? Don’t worry; we all have been there. Safari tabs can be accidentally closed due to several reasons. However, you can quickly restore closed Safari tabs on an iPhone, iPad, and Mac without any hassle. There are three simple ways to do it, and I have explained them below.

How do Safari tabs get closed accidentally on iPhone or iPad?

  • Shake your iPhone or iPad to undo closed Safari tab
  • Reopen recently closed Safari tabs from Tabs Switcher
  • Restore closed Safari tabs from History
  • Use keyboard shortcut
  • Use the New Tab icon
  • Check your Safari history

Safari tabs can be closed accidentally on iPhone and iPad due to a few common reasons:

  • Multitasking gestures : When switching between apps quickly, it’s easy to accidentally swipe away the Safari app or close tabs without realizing it.
  • Accidental taps : Tapping the close button on a tab is a common mistake. You might intend to switch between tabs or close a different tab but end up closing the wrong one.
  • App crashes or freezes : Safari can occasionally crash due to bugs or low memory. When this happens, you might lose all the open tabs during the session.
  • Software Glitches : Sometimes, an unexpected iOS glitch or bug, especially after an update, can cause Safari tabs to disappear.
  • Clearing tabs or data : Clearing Safari browsing data closes your open tabs. Additionally, if someone has recently used Safari on your device, they may close the Tab Group or tabs manually to remove their browsing activity.
  • Wrong browser settings : Safari has settings to automatically close tabs after a certain period to manage the browser clutter and free up space. You may stop this by navigating to Settings → Apps → Safari → Closed Tabs and select Manually .

While researching a topic, I sometimes face accidental tab closures on Safari. So, I use a few tricks to save my tabs. You may also follow these tips to mitigate the problem:

  • Enable iCloud Tabs : You may enable iCloud Tabs to sync your Safari open tabs, Tab Groups, and bookmarks across devices. So, if you close tabs by mistake, you can often recover it from another device. To enable this, access Settings → Your Apple ID → iCloud → Saved to iCloud → Toggle on Safari .
  • Use Reading List : Save important tabs to ensure you don’t lose access to them. Even if you accidentally close the Safari app or delete the tab, you can access it from there. It also lets you read those saved a webpage while offline.
  • Be cautious with gestures : When using Safari on your iPhone, be mindful of your swipes and taps to avoid unintentional tab closures.

How to restore accidentally closed Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad

Multitasking challenges, interface confusion, or the use of accidental gestures—whatever caused you to mistakenly close Safari tabs, these solutions will surely help.

1. Shake your iPhone or iPad to undo accidentally closed Safari tab

Believe me, the iPhone’s Shake to Undo feature is a lifesaver. For the uninitiated, this is an Accessibility feature that allows you to quickly undo or redo certain actions. For example, you can quickly undo or redo typing and restore recently closed Safari tabs.

Accidentally close Safari tab on your iPhone shake your iPhone and select Undo to restore closed safari tab

If you are unable to use this feature for some reason, you may need to enable it manually.

  • Open Settings → Head to  Accessibility .
  • Tap  Touch  under the Physical and Motor section.

Go to Accessibility select Touch and toggle on Shake to Undo on your iPhone or iPad

You can use the Shake to Undo feature to restore one Safari tab. But what if you want to reopen multiple closed Safari tabs?

2. Reopen recently closed Safari tabs from Tabs Switcher

Well, there’s a secret Safari trick that helps you do that. I am sure that even the most experienced Safari users won’t know about the existence of a Recently Closed Tabs list. You can go there and reopen the web pages you closed recently.

  • Open Safari → Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom right corner.
  • Tap and hold the + (plus) icon at the bottom left corner.
  • Doing so will open the list of all the Recently Closed Tabs.

Open Safari select Tabs icon tap and hold the plus icon select the web page you want to reopen

3. Restore closed Safari tabs from History

Another way to retrieve closed tabs in Safari on iPhone is to head to the browsing history and reopen the desired tab. This trick works not only in Safari but on most other iPhone browsers .

  • Open Safari → Tap the  Bookmark  icon below the address bar.
  • Go to the  Personal History  tab (Clock icon 🕘) at the right.

Open Safari Select Bookmark icon Go to Personal History tab select desired day or date and Select Web Page you want to open

  • Alternatively, you can tap and hold the page and select one of the options that appear in the pop-up.

Accessing your Safari browsing history can also help if you are dealing with the disappearing Safari tabs issue on your iPhone.

How to reopen recently closed tabs in Safari for Mac

If you have lost all your Safari tabs while browsing on Mac, you can quickly get them back.

1. Use keyboard shortcut

The easiest way to restore accidentally closed Safari tabs is using the Keyboard Shortcuts. Simply press Command (⌘) + Z to undo closing the last tab. However, if you have performed any other action after the tab is closed, this shortcut will undo that action instead of reopening the tab. In this case, the Shift + Command (⌘) + T shortcut can reopen the most recent closed tab.

Whichever Keyboard shortcut you use, press them repeatedly to reopen multiple recently closed tabs on Safari.

2. Use the New Tab icon

You can use Safari’s New Tab icon to get a list of recently closed tabs. Right-click on the + icon at the top right corner of the window. Then select the tab you want to reopen. It will restore where you opened it first. Thus, you can continue browsing the tabs as organized as before.

Use New Tab icon to restore closed Safari tabs on Mac

However, you have accidentally closed the Safari window; you can’t find this recently closed tabs list. Therefore, move to the next solution.

3. Check your Safari history

Safari records all your browsing activity under the History menu. While a Safari window is open, click History on the menu bar and select Recently Closed. Choose the tab you want to reopen. If your Safari app crashed or was closed accidentally, select Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

Check Safari history to restore closed Safari tabs on Mac

You can choose a method and restore all accidentally closed Safari tabs on Mac based on the number of tabs.

That’s how you restore closed Safari tabs on your iPhone, iPad and Mac. I suggest following the tips I mentioned to avoid losing Safari tabs. Even if you accidentally hit the close (x) button on a Safari tab, use any of the methods shown in this article.

Yes, iCloud stores your Safari tabs if iCloud Sync is enabled for Safari, but they are not included in iCloud backups. When iCloud sync is enabled, your tabs can be accessed on all Apple devices that are signed in with your Apple ID. To preserve Safari tabs, you should use an encrypted computer backup.

Yes, but only if you allowed Safari to use iCloud in the first place. If you have, then all your  Safari Bookmarks , Reading List,  Tab Groups , and open browser tabs are automatically backed up.

iPhones can store Safari history for up to a month.

Web browsing in the Safari browser on the iPhone has come a long way since it was first introduced, and almost as much content is being viewed on mobile devices as is being viewed on computers.

But the functionality of mobile Web browsers is still not as advanced as what you will find on a laptop or desktop computer, which can make it difficult to browse when you are used to having access to certain features.

One such feature – the ability to re-open recently closed browser tabs – is one that you may have thought was missing on your iPhone.

Fortunately, you can open recently closed tabs in the mobile version of Safari, although it is a bit of a hidden feature.

Our tutorial below will walk you through the steps to follow so that you can start taking advantage of this option.

The steps in this article were performed on an iPhone 6 Plus, in iOS 9.

This method will work for other iPhone models that are also running iOS 9, as well as iPhone devices running the iOS 8 operating system.

Step 1: Open the Safari browser.

Step 2: Tap the Tabs icon at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

How to reopen a recently closed tab in Safari on iOS

By Charlie Sorrel • 1:00 pm, January 5, 2018

Reopen recently closed tabs in Safari.

You’ve done it. We’ve all done it. You’ve closed a tab in Safari and instantly realized that it was the wrong one.

It’s not the end of the world. You can open a fresh tab and schlep over to the history panel to hunt down that URL. Or, if you remember something about the title of the page, you can start typing it into Safari’s URL bar and watch for suggestions that match. But there’s a much easier way to access all your recently closed Safari tabs — and it’s just one long-press away.

How to access recently closed tabs in Safari for iOS

This trick works on both the Mac and on iOS devices. All you need to do is long-press (or long-click on the Mac) the + icon , aka the New Tab icon. Do that, and up will pop a panel with a list of the tabs you closed since the last Safari relaunch. If you force-quit Safari for any reason, this list will be wiped (which could be handy if you’ve been up to no good on someone else’s device).

One long press is all it takes.

If you want to use this trick on the Mac, you just long-click on the same New Tab icon, the one at the far right of Safari’s tab bar. Then mouse over to pick the tab you’re looking for.

On the iPhone, there’s one extra step. Because the New Tab button is hidden in the default Safari view, you first must hit the Show Tabs button — the one with a square overlapping another square. Once you are in the tab overview, you can long-press the big + button that appears at bottom center.

And that’s it. You can’t do much other than tap on one of the list entries to reopen that tab, but that’s often all you want. And if you’ve accessed this list with a long-press, then that’s exactly what you want to do.

More mobile Safari tricks

Make two taps in the URL bar? Not me. I just want to Paste and Go.

Mobile Safari is packed with neat little tricks like this. For instance, have you ever long-pressed the URL bar? Do that, and you get the option to copy the URL or, if there’s something on your clipboard already, to Paste and Go, which is a great shortcut for searching or landing a URL.

Check out all the things you can do with tabs!

Or try long-pressing on the Bookmark icon to quickly add a new bookmark (or addd the current page to your reading list). Have a look around, because you’ll probably find something you didn’t know about. Like all the handy options available under the Show Tabs icon. You should definitely check out that one.

That feeling you get when you close the wrong browser tab by accident is no fun. Fortunately, Safari for iOS, like most modern browsers, provides a way to recover from your little mishap. You just have to know where to look.

Most web browsers allow you to open a recently closed tab , either through a keyboard shortcut or menu selection. Safari on iOS is no different. It remembers the last five tabs you closed (unless you force quit the app or restart your phone). The feature is a little hidden, though, so unless you've already discovered it by accident, here's what to do.

In Safari, tap the Tabs button at the bottom right of your screen.

In the Tabs view, tapping the Plus button opens a new page. Instead of tapping it, tap and hold it for a few seconds to open a list of recently closed tabs.

Tap any selection from the Recently Closed Tabs list.

And enjoy not having to search for that page again.

That's all there is to it. It's a simple trick once you know it's available, but it's super handy in a pinch.

Simply tap on the title of the closed tab you want to reopen, and Safari will promptly restore the selected page, allowing you to seamlessly resume your browsing from the point where you left off.

Utilizing the Search Feature : In instances where you need to retrieve a specific closed tab from an extensive browsing history, Safari's History feature offers a convenient search functionality. By tapping the search bar at the top of the History section and entering keywords related to the closed tab, you can swiftly locate the desired page within your browsing history, streamlining the process of reopening closed tabs.

By leveraging the History feature in Safari for iPhone, you can effectively retrieve closed tabs and access a comprehensive record of your browsing activity. This method provides a convenient and intuitive approach to reopening closed tabs, empowering you to seamlessly resume your browsing experience and make the most of Safari's functionality on your iPhone.

Method 3: Using the iCloud Tabs feature

When it comes to seamless synchronization and accessibility across multiple devices, Safari's iCloud Tabs feature takes center stage, offering a convenient method to retrieve closed tabs on your iPhone. By leveraging iCloud Tabs, you can effortlessly access tabs that are open on other synced devices, providing a seamless browsing experience that transcends individual devices. Here's a comprehensive exploration of how you can effectively utilize the iCloud Tabs feature to reopen closed tabs on Safari for iPhone:

Enabling iCloud Tabs : To begin, ensure that iCloud Tabs are enabled on your iPhone as well as on your other synced devices, such as your iPad or Mac. This synchronization ensures that the tabs you have open on one device are readily accessible on all your synced devices, including the ability to retrieve closed tabs seamlessly.

Accessing iCloud Tabs : Open Safari on your iPhone and tap the square icon in the bottom right corner to access the tab view. Next, tap and hold the "+" icon at the bottom of the screen to reveal the "Show All Tabs" option. Upon tapping "Show All Tabs," you'll be presented with a list of tabs that are open on your other synced devices, including those that may have been closed recently.

Retrieving Closed Tabs from Other Devices : As you navigate through the list of tabs open on your other synced devices, you'll have the opportunity to select and reopen tabs that were previously closed. This seamless integration allows you to retrieve closed tabs from your iPad, Mac, or any other synced device, ensuring that you can seamlessly continue your browsing experience across different platforms.

Streamlined Browsing Experience : By leveraging the iCloud Tabs feature, you can enjoy a streamlined browsing experience that transcends the limitations of individual devices. Whether you inadvertently closed a tab on your iPhone or need to access a page that was open on another synced device, iCloud Tabs empowers you to seamlessly retrieve closed tabs and continue your browsing journey without interruption.

Enhanced Productivity and Convenience : The seamless synchronization facilitated by iCloud Tabs not only allows you to retrieve closed tabs but also enhances your overall productivity and convenience. Whether you're transitioning between devices or simply want to access a page from your browsing history, iCloud Tabs provides a cohesive browsing experience that aligns with your dynamic and interconnected digital lifestyle.

By effectively utilizing the iCloud Tabs feature in Safari for iPhone, you can seamlessly retrieve closed tabs and enjoy a cohesive browsing experience that transcends individual devices. This integration not only streamlines the process of reopening closed tabs but also underscores the convenience and productivity that Safari offers within the Apple ecosystem.

In conclusion, the ability to reopen closed tabs on Safari for iPhone is a valuable feature that enhances the browsing experience and empowers users to seamlessly retrieve and continue their online activities. By exploring the three methods outlined in this article, users can effectively navigate the intricacies of Safari's functionality and leverage its diverse features to their advantage.

The "Recently Closed Tabs" feature provides a quick and intuitive way to access and reopen tabs that have been closed, offering a streamlined approach to retrieving closed tabs without the need for extensive manual navigation. This user-friendly feature ensures that accidental tab closures or the need to revisit previously viewed pages can be addressed with ease, enhancing the overall convenience of browsing on Safari for iPhone.

Furthermore, the "History" feature serves as a comprehensive repository of browsing activity, allowing users to access a chronological record of visited websites and seamlessly reopen closed tabs. Whether users need to revisit a recently closed tab or retrieve a page from their extensive browsing history, the History feature provides a straightforward method to access closed tabs and continue browsing seamlessly.

Additionally, the integration of iCloud Tabs across synced devices offers a cohesive and interconnected browsing experience, enabling users to retrieve closed tabs from other devices and seamlessly continue their browsing journey. This seamless synchronization underscores the convenience and productivity that Safari offers within the Apple ecosystem, aligning with the dynamic and interconnected digital lifestyles of users.

In essence, the diverse methods for reopening closed tabs on Safari for iPhone not only highlight the browser's functionality but also emphasize the user-centric approach that enhances convenience and accessibility. Whether it's the expedited access provided by the "Recently Closed Tabs" feature, the comprehensive browsing history accessible through the "History" feature, or the seamless synchronization facilitated by iCloud Tabs, Safari for iPhone empowers users to navigate their online activities with ease and efficiency.

By mastering these methods, users can optimize their browsing experience, mitigate the impact of accidental tab closures, and seamlessly continue their online activities, ultimately maximizing the potential of Safari for iPhone as a versatile and user-friendly browser.

How To Reopen Recently Closed Tabs In Safari On iOS

by Sameed Khan · November 13, 2016

While the ability to open recently closed tabs is one that’s been around in desktop browsers for a while now, the same is a relatively recent addition for their mobile counterparts, even more so for Mobile Safari.

In fact, it’s quite likely that you had no idea Safari supports the feature on iOS, as it is hidden away behind the essentials. That is precisely why we thought it’d be a good idea to share a little tip exploring the feature and its fairly simple usage. And if you often find yourself accidentally closing tabs during your mobile browsing sessions, you’ll thank us. So without further ado, let’s jump right into learning how to reopen recently-closed tabs in Safari on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

We’re going to assume you’re already familiar with basic tab management (viewing and closing tabs) in Safari. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Within Safari, tap the tab view icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen to jump into  tab view , where you can close currently opened tabs or add new ones.

2. Tap and hold the “+” button at the bottom of the tab view and you’ll be taken to the  Recently Closed Tabs  screen.

3. Here, you’re shown a list of the last five tabs you closed. Simply tap a page to reopen it in a new tab.

Note:  Safari will remember your last five closed tabs as long as it remains within your device’s memory, until you force-quit it from the app switcher, or switch to Private browsing. While Private browsing is active, Safari does not log closed tabs or allow you to restore those from your regular browsing session.

Without any UI cues to help, the feature isn’t all that easy to find. Once you get past that little hurdle, though, it makes quite a bit of sense to hide it behind the “+” button instead of cluttering the interface with yet another icon.

I f you’ve ever used an iOS device for an extended period of time, then you’ve closed out of an important Safari browser tab — whether it was an accident, the sheer result of slippery fingers, or otherwise. Whatever the cause, the good news is there’s absolutely no reason to fret since you do have options for quickly and easily reopening the page you just closed out of.

5 Effective Ways to Restore Recently Closed Tabs in Safari

Updated on Tuesday, August 27, 2024

iBoysoft author Vain Rowe

If you use a Mac as your workstation, then circumstances where Safari tabs are accidentally closed or Mac power failure suspends your incomplete webpages occur as commonly as a meal.

Yet don't be upset, you have 5 ways to restore closed tabs in Safari on your iPhone and Mac without issue. Just read this article from  iBoysoft  and try the way that you like.

How to Restore Closed Tabs in Safari

How to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on Mac

If you think that Safari gets the better of Chrome in the  Safari vs Chrome  battle and take it as your default browser, it's not an odd thing that you close all Safari windows with one mouse click. Take it easy, you can learn 3 methods to reopen the Safari tabs on your computer running  macOS  here.

Method 1: Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Just like you  undo an email on Mac , you can also undo the tab shut actions with certain keyboard shortcuts or the Safari menu shortcuts on the context menu.

You can relaunch Safari on your computer and then press the Command + Z keys to bring back the last closed tab. If you have shut several tabs in one click, you should hold down the keyboard shortcuts repeatedly to restore all the tabs one by one.

Alternatively, you are able to select the Reopen Last Closed Tab option to bring the closed Safari tab back. Let me show you how to do:

  • Launch Safari on your Mac via  Spotlight Search shortcuts .
  • Head to the History menu on the top toolbar of your Mac desktop.
  • Select Reopen Last Closed Tab on the dropdown menu of the History. You can also hit the responding Shift + Command + T keyboards to complete the restoration.
  • Then all the tabs you have closed on Safari will show up automatically.

Use the keyboard shortcuts or menu shortcuts

Method 2: Utilize the add icon on Safari

Safari's new tab icon allows you to create a new tab with a left click and restore the closed tab with a right click. You will have the list of all closed tabs and windows that you have closed as long as you right-click this icon.

  • Relaunch the Safari browser on your device.
  • Head to the upper right corner of the Safari main interface.

Utilize the add icon on Safari

  • Choose the tab that you plan to restore and it will come back.

Method 3: Check the Recently Closed option

You are also allowed to recover your closed tab on Safari by checking the Recently Closed menu. Different from the Restore Last Closed Tab option, this way won't show you all the closed tabs and you can choose specific tabs to recover.

  • Launch the Safari browser on your Mac.
  • Locate the History tab on the top menu bar.

Check the Recently Closed option

  • Click the website that you visited and then it will appear on the Safari main window.

If you have known how to restore recently closed tabs in Safari on your Mac with the guideline, why not share it with more people?

How to restore closed tabs in Safari on iPhone

The way to reopen a recently closed Safari tab on your iPhone is pretty much the same as on your Mac. You can click the + icon or search for your Closed Tabs in the Safari history to reopen the closed tabs, though they are not as easily accessible as the Mac.

Method 1: Utilize the add icon on Safari

  • Run the Safari browser on your iPhone, and tap the Show All Tabs icon at the bottom right corner of the iPhone screen.
  • Tap and hold your finger on the + (New Tab) icon for a couple of seconds.

Utilize the add icon on Safari

Method 2: Search for the Closed Tabs in the Safari history

If you fail to restore the Safari tabs, you may need to browse the history and then reopen them manually. Safari saves every website you visit in the browsing history until you browse them in Private mode.

You can easily view your history list or search for particular websites to reopen your closed Safari tabs here:

  • Open Safari and tap the Book icon.
  • Tap the Clock icon to view your browsing history.
  • Search your closed Safari tab or scroll through your history in chronological order.

Search for the Closed Tabs in the Safari history

How to Open Recently Closed Safari Tabs on iPhone and iPad

Jeff Butts

Eons ago, I wrote an article about viewing recently closed tabs on the iPad. Well, you can do this on the iPhone, too, but the steps are just a bit different on both devices than they used to be. So if you want to get back a Safari tab you closed out of recently on your iPad or iPhone, here’s how you’ll do it! For the iPhone, start by touching Safari’s “tabs” icon.

Tabs Button in Safari on iPhone

The subsequent screen shows you all of the tabs you have open. From there, touch and hold on the plus button.

Plus Button on iPhone in Safari tabs view lets you add a new tab or open one you recently closed

On the iPad, you can skip the first step and just hold on the plus button in the toolbar.

Plus Button in Safari on iPad for adding tabs or opening recently closed tabs

On whichever device you’re using, the tabs you closed recently will appear after you do that! You can then tap any one to bring it back.

Recently Closed Tabs Screen on iPhone

And at that point, you might wanna bookmark the important ones for safekeeping. I’ve never really understood why some folks keep 50 bazillion tabs open, but if that’s part of your workflow, then you at least have a way to find stuff if you accidentally close something you didn’t intend to!

Accidentally closed all open tabs on iPad safari

I have not been able to find the answer to this question: if you accidentally close the tabs on the iPad in Safari, how do you reopen the recently closed tabs?

This solution does not work. When I did that, it only showed the one window that was open the other window with multiple tabs that somehow got closed was not visible and none of the other items described in. Those pictures were visible on my iPad mini.

This is another very annoying feature that Apple needs to fix. The fact that you can somehow close multiple tabs if you have two windows open and have no way of regaining them. This has happened to me numerous times. And I never did anything like closing any of the windows for it to happen.

If you closed a Safari Window - and all associated tabs - you can reopen a Recently Closed Window for a limited period of time…

Starting from a Home Screen, assuming that Safari is visible in the Dock, touch-and-hold (i.e., long touch) the Safari icon; an Action Menu will appear.

From the menu, select Show All Windows ; you will now see a screen that closely resembles the Task Switcher - but you will only see preview windows for your open Safari Windows. At top-right (iPadOS15) or top-left (iPadOS16/17) you will see the Reopen Closed Window(s) button.

ios safari reopen closed tab

You should note that the Reopen Closed Window(s) button allows you to reopen a window for a limited period of time. If left too long, you may have lost the opportunity to recover the closed window - and with it the tabs and related tab history.

In your Safari window, you need to touch-and-hold the “+” (the one you use to open a new tab); it will offer your list of recently closed tabs.

From prior question regarding restoring lost tabs on my iPad, the answer give was to go “menu”. There is no “menu” in an iPad. How can I restore my tabs to where they used to be please?

Nov 10, 2023 8:10 AM in response to vlfraser7

This is the ONLY thing that actually worked for me. The easiest and quickest way to restore closed tabs on a Mac for any browser is reopen the browser and hold the "shift+command+T" keys. Remember, you need to repeat hitting these keys to restore each tab. So, if you had 50 tabs that you want to restore, you will need to do this 50 times. Hope this helps ☺️

I turned on Stage Manager, and the "Reopen closed window" option never appears. This really is a poor implementation of a feature. I have now inadvertently closed multiple tabs many times, leaving just the one tab I didn’t intend to close. Most annoying Apple.

May 13, 2023 12:50 PM in response to vlfraser7

Are you certain that you closed all your tabs - and have not, perhaps, opened a new Safari Window? Each Safari Window has its own self-contained set of open tabs.

When you open Safari, you may see the Shelf at the bottom of the screen - within which you will see each of your open Safari Windows; simply tap the thumbnail corresponding with the Safari Window (with associated tabs) that you wish to view.

If you closed a Safari Window - and all associated tabs - you can reopen a Recently Closed Window…

From the menu, select Show All Windows ; you will now see a screen that closely resembles the Task Switcher - but you will only see preview windows for your open Safari Windows. At top-right (or top-left for iPadOS16) you will see the Reopen Closed Window(s) button.

If you have accidentally closed all you your open tabs associated with a Safari Window, this User Tip may be helpful in recovering your tabs. While I have not [yet] updated the document to reflect changes in iPadOS15/16 (having been written for an earlier version of iPadOS), much of it is still relevant - as are the outlined strategies:

For anyone using iPadOS 17 you need to turn on stage manager to see the "reopen closed window" button.

This has happened several times before and I was working on something that disappeared without me closing or touching anything. I left it open, returned and poof, gone! History only shows another random page. None of the advice works. I am using an iPad mini without an external keyboard. This NEVER happens on my Windows based devices or Edge, Chrome, or Firefox browsers as my entire history is saved and easily restored.

Apr 11, 2024 10:41 PM in response to vlfraser7

I believe there are other answers but to re-open closed tabs in safari on iPad, hold the + sign in the top right. You’ll see a drop down of all the recently closed tabs in the window you’re currently using. But if you go to a different window from the one with the closed tabs, it won’t give you the list of closed tabs. I hope I’ve made myself clear. Feel free to send questions in return. Hope this helps.

For MacOS just try with CMD+SHIFT+T.

For iOS and iPadOS try the same by connecting a bluetooth keyboard. Make sure you keep safari opened. Tried and worked on iPadOS 17.3. :)

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, how to restore & reopen all closed tabs in safari on ipad.

Reopen and restore all closed tabs in Safari on iPhone or iPad

If you’ve accidentally closed tons of Safari tabs on iPad or iPhone and want to restore them, or you lost all of your Safari tabs by trying to create a Safari Tab Group (a surprisingly common occurrence, what a feature bug), you are probably desperately wondering how you can recover and reopen all closed tabs in Safari and restore them all to your iPhone or iPad.

Many people use Safari tabs as an alternative to bookmarks, keeping hundreds of tabs open at a time, but forget to bookmark them. Endless hours of research, resources, etc, open in tabs, can all be gone in a flash if you encounter a hiccup with Safari on iPhone or iPad. Oops. Indeed, Safari is unforgiving on the iPad (or iPhone), and your tabs may be toast.

Worried you lost your Safari tabs on iPad? Not so fast!

There’s good news and bad news.

While there’s no official “Reopen all closed tabs” option or ‘Restore previous session’ in Safari on iPadOS or iOS, you’re not out of options.

The bad news is that if you had tons of open tabs, say 300, 400, or 500 open tabs, they might be lost for good, or at least many of them may be gone.

But the good news is you can try to recover many of them through several different options. And if you have a keyboard hooked up to the iPad in particular, you’ll be able to get quite a few of the lost tabs back.

Restoring Closed Safari Tabs on iPad with Keyboard Shortcut

If you have an external keyboard, Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or similar keyboard with the iPad, you can use a keyboard shortcut in Safari to restore the last closed Safari tabs.

  • Hit Command + Shift + T on a keyboard repeatedly, until all tabs have been reopened

I have personally experienced catastrophic tab loss due to the Tab Groups bug, but by using the Command Shift T method I was able to recover about 200 of 500 lost Safari tabs. This is probably the most broadly useful trick, and the closest method to restoring all closed tabs in Safari on iPad.

Unfortunately, this trick is probably not available for iPhone, but you can try connecting a bluetooth keyboard to iPhone and giving it a shot anyway – let us know if it works.

Recovering Closed Tabs in Safari on iPad via New Tab Button

The plus button in Safari on iPad and iPhone is the traditional commonly used method used to recover closed tabs in iOS Safari and iPadOS too.

  • On iPad: Tap and hold on the + plus button, then select the closed tabs you wish to reopen from the drop-down menu
  • On iPhone: Tap the two overlapping squares icon to access tabs view, then tap and hold on the + plus button to select closed tabs you want to reopen

Restore closed tabs in Safari

The + tab drop down menu that shows with a long press will reveal all tabs that have been closed recently, so repeat this process to reopen and recover closed tabs as needed.

Restoring Lost Tabs in Safari on iPad through History

You can also browse through Safari history to restore closed tabs, though if you have tons of tabs you are trying to restore you’ll be in the history menu for a while.

  • Tap the sidebar menu button, then tap on “History”
  • Tap on the history item(s) you want to restore the tab for

This is fairly tedious but it can be very effective if you don’t mind putting the time into restoring from browser history.

Of course if you deleted and cleared the browser history, this won’t be an option.

Restore from a Recent Backup to Recover All Lost Safari Tabs?

If your tabs were super important, perhaps you were doing tons of research and lost them all, and if you had a recent backup made from before you lost the tabs, you can also try to restore the iPad from the backup to recover those lost tabs.

However this usually does not work to recover the tabs if Safari is syncing through iCloud Tabs, so if you’re in that situation you’ll want to use the approaches above rather than the backup recovery approach.

Were you able to restore your lost Safari tabs on iPhone or iPad using these tricks? Which method worked best for you? Do you have another approach to recovering all your closed Safari tabs in iOS and iPadOS? Share with us your experiences in the comments.
