Eastern Caribbean cruises sail to tried-and-true islands such as the Bahamas , St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and sometimes Puerto Rico . Western Caribbean itineraries visit islands such as Grand Cayman, Jamaica , and Cozumel, or other ports in Mexico, and sometimes Belize and Honduras. Only a very small portion of cruises that sail to the Caribbean during a storm season are actually affected by these storms. Though you may encounter slightly rougher water on a cruise during hurricane season, there are many systems in place to detect any hurricane weather along your cruise route, ensuring your ship’s captain and crew will be able to chart a path around any bad weather or make modifications to the itinerary to keep you safe. Where are the best beaches in the Caribbean?

Every island in the Caribbean has beautiful beaches, from rocky coves to long sweeps of white sand lined with umbrellas and buzzing beach bars. Naming the  Caribbean's best beaches  is a purely subjective topic, as everybody has their favorite. Some of the most famous, though, include Grand Cayman’s gorgeous Seven Mile Beach, and the dazzling white sand of Eagle Beach on Aruba. Dickenson Beach in Antigua is a picturesque paradise, while Crane Beach on Barbados boasts pale pink sand. 

Honeymoon Beach on St. John is home to one of the most romantic settings in the Caribbean, while The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a day full of adventure, where you can hike through caves that lead you straight down to secret rock pools. Rent an overwater cabana for the day at  the Coco Beach Club on CocoCay in the Bahamas, or relax with a cocktail in hand on this natural coral island at any of the island's white sandy beaches. Deciding which beach is your personal favorite is all part of the fun.

What can I do besides go to the beach?

The Caribbean has a rich culture that extends beyond beach life. Explore colorful streets and colonial-era forts in Old San Juan, and ride the St. Kitts Scenic Railway across verdant countryside with beautiful ocean views. Take a day off from sunbathing and join a horseback riding tour along St. Maarten’s stunning coastline. Join a gourmet walking tour of Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands to learn about its culinary culture, or stroll through the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park on Grand Cayman. Learn about spice cultivation in Grenada or join a nature walk in Barbados. It doesn’t matter how many times you visit the Caribbean—you will never run out of things to do.

Do I need a passport to cruise to the Caribbean? 

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information  here . 

Not all Caribbean cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to the Bahamas or Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate is sufficient.

What should I pack for a Caribean Cruise?

When  packing for a cruise to the Caribbean , you’ll need clothing for a warm, sometimes humid climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock. 

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided, but where there are places that you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment. 

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual. 

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Is it easy to get around the Caribbean islands? 

The easiest way to get around each island is to  book a shore excursion . 

What language is spoken in the Caribbean?

English is the main language spoken in the Caribbean. However, there are many other languages spoken within the region. On the ABC Islands and St. Maarten (on the Dutch side), Dutch is the official language, but locals also speak Papamiento, a hybrid of Dutch, Spanish, and various West African languages. In the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, it’s Spanish. On the French side of St. Maarten/St. Martin, it’s French. Across the Caribbean, you’ll hear Creole spoken, or patois, which varies from island to island.

Odyssey of the Seas

Launched in July 2021, Odyssey of the Seas holds 4,198 guests at double occupancy, 5,498 passengers maximum and 1,612 crew members. Odyssey of the Seas offers standout amenities like RipCord by iFLY (an exclusive skydiving simulator available on just five Royal Caribbean ships) and the FlowRider, a 40-foot-long surf simulator. There is also the North Star observation capsule, which hoists guests 300 feet above sea level over the cruise ship to enjoy unparalleled views below. 

In addition to these thrilling activities, the ship comes equipped with standard facilities like pools, an arcade, a spa, a fitness center with classes, kids clubs and shopping venues. There are 15 dining options, ranging from Japanese fare to all-you-can-eat buffets to Starbucks. For drinks, the ship offers six bars and lounges, giving passengers plenty of places to enjoy libations. Entertainment options include theatrical performances, live music, a casino, outdoor movie nights and more. 

As far as cabins go, cruisers can choose between Interior, Ocean View, and Balcony staterooms, as well as suite accommodations and new Virtual Balcony rooms. These technologically advanced cabins feature floor-to-ceiling displays that project real-time views of the sights and sounds from the outside of the ship. 

Odyssey of the Seas sails to ports in Europe, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. It also completes trans-Atlantic voyages.

Symphony of the Seas

Symphony of the Seas set sail in 2018 and features 18 decks packed with activities. The ship carries 5,518 guests at double occupancy, 6,680 passengers maximum and 2,200 crew members.

For heart-pounding fun, travelers will find a surf simulator, an indoor ice skating rink, two 40-foot rock walls, a zip line and a 10-story slide. Meanwhile, relaxation seekers can unwind in the spa, sip cocktails made by robotic bartenders or stroll through the Central Park -inspired neighborhood.

Onboard snacks and meals are served at 19 quick-service and sit-down eateries. The Main Dining Room is where the ship's traditional, complimentary dinners are provided nightly, but specialty options like a steakhouse, a bistro and a Johnny Rockets outpost are also available. What's more, cruisers can dine at Jamie's Italian, a restaurant helmed by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

After filling up on gourmet fare, passengers can retreat to their cabins, all of which include work desks, flat-screen TVs and minibars. Guests can choose from 149-square-foot Interior staterooms, some of which have virtual balconies with real-time views of the ocean, or opt for upgraded cabins with furnished balconies and up to 1,524 square feet of space. Select suites also feature two bedrooms, whirlpool tubs and dining rooms.

Symphony of the Seas departs from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, and  Miami  for sailings throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Wonder of the Seas

Wonder of the Seas, which embarked on its maiden voyage in March 2022, holds 5,734 passengers at double occupancy, 7,084 guests maximum and 2,204 crew members. The ship measures 1,188 feet long and 211 feet wide, and it weighs 235,600 gross tons. Like its sister ship, Symphony of the Seas , it is one of the largest cruise ships in the world.  

Guests can enjoy plenty of thrill activities on board, such as the Ultimate Abyss – a 10-story dark tunnel slide – or the 40-foot-long FlowRider surf stimulator. The ship also offers a fitness center, shopping venues, rock climbing, a carousel and clubs for kids and teens. When it's time to dine, cruisers have the option of 21 dining venues ranging from Italian fare to seafood. Travelers can also indulge in a few cocktails at 11 bars and lounges.

Accommodations include Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite staterooms. If you're looking for something more spacious, check out the ship's all-new Suite Neighborhood. Located on the upper decks, these suites offer guests ample private quarters to recharge during the cruise. Amenities included in the exclusive suites include priority boarding, a members-only dining facility and a dedicated check-in line. For families, the new neighborhood may be of particular interest because it features the Ultimate Family Suite. The family suite offers two floors of space with stunning ocean views, in-suite movies and video games and a kids slide between the floors.  

Wonder of the Seas sails from Miami and  Orlando , Florida, to ports in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Allure of the Seas

Allure of the Seas, unveiled in 2010, is among the largest cruise ships in the world. It carries 5,496 passengers at double occupancy, 6,826 guests at maximum capacity and a whopping 2,054 crew members. The ship is scheduled to complete a $100 million refurbishment in April 2025. 

Along with signature line amenities like rock climbing walls and ice skating rinks, the ship houses seven unique neighborhoods with a variety of activities, shows and dining options. Other standout features include a zip line that descends 10 decks, two surf simulators and a science lab. Plus, with 23 dining options – including a Starbucks at sea – every member of the family will be satisfied.

In terms of lodging, about 65% of cabins feature balconies, and all staterooms are appointed with TVs and minifridges. Interior staterooms are the most economical option, but those who splurge on Suites are granted larger balconies and concierge service. Crowd-free areas might be difficult to find due to the outrageous capacity of the ship, but some recent cruisers praise the nonstop activity and entertainment. 

For Bahamas and other Caribbean sailings, Allure of the Seas departs from Miami; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and Galveston , Texas. For Europe voyages, it departs from Barcelona and Rome.

Harmony of the Seas

Welcoming 5,479 guests at double occupancy and 6,687 passengers maximum, Harmony of the Seas is among the largest cruise ships in the world. Launched in 2016 and tuned up in 2021, the ship features Royal Caribbean staples like surf simulators and rock climbing walls, as well as innovative amenities like the Ultimate Abyss (a 10-story slide) and three multistory waterslides. Plus, while younger passengers play in the arcade or at age-appropriate clubs, adults can relax at the spa or sip cocktails at multiple bars and lounges. There are 2,200 crew members on board. 

After working up an appetite, guests can choose from 17 dining options. Past cruisers especially praised the multitude of specialty restaurants, which range from Mexican to Japanese fare and require reservations and an additional fee.

When it comes to lodging, Harmony of the Seas offers a wide variety of cabin categories, with more than 70% of cabins featuring balconies. While Interior staterooms are the most economical choice, those looking for a little more space and luxury should consider upgrading to a Suite, which range from Junior Suites to four-bedroom Villa Suites. While all cabins offer flat-screen TVs and minibars, suites include access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck.

Harmony of the Seas sails from  Galveston, Texas , to destinations throughout the Caribbean. It also completes trans-Atlantic voyages.

Mariner of the Seas

Introduced in 2003 and overhauled in mid-2018, Mariner of the Seas features passenger favorites like the Escape Room, the Izumi Japanese restaurant and a surf simulator. During the ship's refurbishment, Royal Caribbean also added 100 new staterooms, updated cabins and public spaces and added fan-favorite restaurant Jamie's Italian by chef Jamie Oliver.

Though the large ship features a 1-to-3 crew-to-passenger ratio, recent cruisers said the vessel still maintains a high level of customer service. Mariner of the Seas carries 3,114 guests at double occupancy and 4,252 passengers at maximum capacity. 

When it comes to dining, the ship offers 11 venues, including a multilevel main dining room. The ship's 10 bars and lounges and onboard entertainment, which includes Broadway-style shows, earn a consistent nod of approval from past cruisers. Kids have plenty of age-appropriate entertainment, too, including youth programs and teen lounges. Mariner of the Seas touts three pools and six whirlpools. These areas of the ship attract a high concentration of children.

Past travelers were generally complimentary of the staterooms. Similar to its sister ships, Mariner of the Seas offers four stateroom categories: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite. All staterooms include flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi accessibility.

Adventure of the Seas

Adventure of the Seas (first launched in 2001) underwent an extensive renovation in January 2018. It boasts modern amenities like an outdoor movie screen and Wi-Fi (for an extra fee). Other highlights include an ice skating rink, a surf simulator and a rock climbing wall. 

There are 10 dining venues across the ship, the newest of which is the Izumi Japanese specialty restaurant. While adults can relax at the ship's 12 bars and lounges, youngsters can mix and mingle at age-appropriate youth clubs and a teens-only disco. Among other onboard amenities, Adventure of the Seas features an abundance of pools and whirlpools, including an indoor/outdoor pool and lounge area exclusive to adults called the Solarium.

When it comes to lodging, recent cruisers found staterooms to be comfortable and spacious. Cabins come in four categories – Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite – and about 60% offer ocean views. The ship's 2018 revamp brought with it new Interior and Ocean View staterooms, as well as a new Suite Lounge. While it may be difficult to find quiet spaces on the ship (it carries 3,114 passengers at double occupancy and 3,807 guests at maximum capacity), recent guests were still complimentary of the service provided by the 1,185 crew members on board.

Oasis of the Seas

The massive Oasis of the Seas saw an extensive refurbishment in late 2019, unveiling the line's first dedicated karaoke venue, a live music space with a large dance floor, brand-new dining options (including a barbecue restaurant), three waterslides, new bars and more. The vessel carries 5,602 passengers at double occupancy, 6.771 guests maximum and 2,109 crew members.

While this ship is not for those seeking secluded spaces, most cruisers say the seven distinct onboard neighborhoods make up for that. The behemoth ship features designer boutiques and larger staterooms than other ships in the fleet.

Like other Royal Caribbean vessels, Oasis of the Seas offers four cabin categories: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite. Interior rooms average about 150 square feet, while Suite category cabins can span anywhere from 287 to 1,524 square feet and include added amenities like Jacuzzis and expansive balconies.

While recent cruisers were impressed with the ship's abundant amenities, they noted that there aren't many tailored onboard experiences – especially when the ship is filled to capacity. Oasis of the Seas caters to those looking for nonstop onboard action. There are 20 dining experiences and 11 bars and lounges, including the Bionic Bar with a robotic bartender.

Vision of the Seas

Most recently updated in late 2018 (except for routine maintenance in 2022), Vision of the Seas offers Royal Caribbean staples like diverse dining venues and nonstop entertainment. Past cruisers especially praise the ship's appealing decor and the Solarium, an adults-only pool and lounge area. The vessel carries 2,050 guests at double occupancy, 2,514 passengers at maximum capacity and 742 crew members.

In terms of food, travelers can choose from the main dining room, the buffet and several casual eateries. Cruisers recommend springing for a meal at the ship's specialty restaurants, which range from the Chops Grille steakhouse to the Izumi Asian venue. Food in the main dining room received mixed reviews, but travelers praised the service around the ship.

When it comes to daytime activities, guests can try rock climbing, swim in the pools (which can become crowded) or play games in the casino. 

In terms of lodging, Vision of the Seas touts four stateroom categories: Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite. Interior cabins range from 136 to 252 square feet, while Suites on the opposite end of the spectrum range from 243 to 1,140 square feet. Opt for a balcony-equipped Suite and you'll enjoy cushier extras like whirlpool bathtubs. All cabins include amenities like flat-screen TVs and vanity areas. 

Vision of the Seas departs from Baltimore for itineraries in the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and Canada and New England.

Anthem of the Seas

Debuted in 2015, Anthem of the Seas offers impressive amenities like the first at-sea skydiving simulator and a 360-degree observation pod that allows cruisers to dangle 300 feet above the sea.

Staterooms also boast innovative features, including family-friendly adjoining cabins and Interior rooms outfitted with "virtual balconies" that show real-time views of the ship's location. All cabin categories (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) include flat-screen TVs and minifridges.

Guests won't need to spend much time in their cabins, though. The ship offers a multitude of activities, ranging from daytime spa treatments, rock climbing and bumper cars to nightly shows and casino games. When it's time to eat, travelers can choose from 19 dining venues, including six signature restaurants for an extra fee. Guests praised the new technology on board, including smart wristbands that eliminate the need for room keys.

With a capacity of 4,180 passengers at double occupancy, 4,905 guests maximum and 1,500 crew members, Anthem of the Seas passengers can expect crowded common areas during peak times. 

Anthem of the Seas sails to ports in Alaska, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, the Arabian Gulf, Europe, Hawaii and the South Pacific. The ship also offers trans-Pacific voyages.

Thinking about booking your first cruise? The sheer range of choices can be daunting. There are more than two dozen lines marketing to North Americans — no two alike.

The list of brands includes everything from giant companies such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, which are household names, to lesser-known small-ship operators such as Windstar Cruises.

Some of the brands — Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line, in particular — operate massive vessels that are like giant floating resorts with multiple pool areas, deck-top water parks and other over-the-top amusements . Others specialize in intimate, boutique hotel-style ships.

Some lines, such as Carnival, are aimed at a budget crowd. Others operate vessels that are as luxurious as any upscale resort found on land. A few small luxury players such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises have ships with lavish suites that'll cost you as much as $11,000 a day .

Where should you start your search for the perfect cruise for you? Below, you'll find our quick guide to some of the most popular cruise brands. As you'll see, it's not meant to be an in-depth review of the lines. It's just a short overview — enough to give you a sense of which particular cruise operator might best appeal to you.

Once you've narrowed down the choices to a few brands that you think best fit your style, do a deeper dive into them and their specific ships, their itineraries and home ports and their comparable costs (either on your own or with the help of a cruise-savvy travel agent ). With just four ships, each holding fewer than 700 passengers, Azamara is one of the smallest players in the cruise business. But it has a loyal following of travelers who appreciate the upscale ambience of its vessels, the inclusive amenities it offers (including gratuities and alcoholic drinks) and its destination focus.

The line prides itself on offering longer stays in ports, including multiday visits. Its ships have an intimate, boutique-hotel feel. Pricing is higher than at the big, mass-market lines but not quite as high as you'll find at luxury lines.

Carnival Cruise Line

The self-described "fun ship" line is the king of short, affordable, fun-focused cruises from U.S. ports to the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Mexico and beyond.

The choice of roughly one in five cruisers, Carnival Cruise Line' s ships are notoriously lively, flashy and packed with fun features such as water parks with multiple waterslides. Just don't expect anything too fancy .

Celebrity Cruises

Designed to be a cut above mainstream options such as Carnival while remaining relatively affordable, this Miami-based "premium" line is known for some of the most stylish big ships at sea.

Expect high-end design, cutting-edge art and trendy restaurants. In short, Celebrity aims for sophisticates, not the party crowd (although it's not a luxury product).

Celebrity's four newest ships, Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent , feature "infinite veranda" cabins that are open to the sea in a way we haven't seen with other ocean ships. They boast a glass wall that opens from the top to create a balcony-like effect.

Crystal Cruises

This much-beloved luxury line recently restarted operations under new owners after shutting down for 18 months. For years, it was considered the ultimate luxury cruise operator, and our take after sailing on one of the line's vessels after the relaunch is that it's even better than before. Initially, Crystal has returned to operations with just two ships. But it recently announced plans to expand rapidly with four more ships over the next six years.

A storied line with roots that go back to the 1800s, this four-ship brand is perhaps best known for its 2,695-passenger flagship, Queen Mary 2 . The ship lives up to its billing as a true ocean liner with semiregular, transatlantic service between Southampton, England, and New York.

Cunard fans love the line's relatively formal vibe (including nightly dress codes) and other nods to ocean liner tradition, including evenings with ballroom dancing. The line's fourth ship, Queen Anne, just debuted this year.

Disney Cruise Line

Meet-and-greets with Disney characters, Disney-themed shows and the most extensive kiddie fun zones on the high seas are just a few of the family-friendly allures of a Disney cruise . If you're a Disney fan, nothing quite compares.

If Disney isn't your thing, well, this probably isn't the line for you. The biggest downside of the brand? As with Disney's parks on land, it doesn't come cheap.

Holland America

Tradition long has been a touchstone for this storied line, which dates to 1873 and is known for carefully crafted, globe-circling itineraries on midsize ships.

However, Holland America has been shaking things up in recent years with lively new venues such as B.B. King's Blues Club. Couples and retirees are the market for this line. Families with kids might want to look elsewhere.

MSC Cruises

A giant of cruising in Europe, Switzerland-based MSC Cruises is making a big play for North Americans with newer, bigger ships sailing year-round from Florida to the Caribbean and Bahamas. It also offers sailings from New York City.

Like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, MSC Cruises operates big, resortlike vessels that appeal to a broad audience. Among the highlights of its cruises in North America are stops at its new private island in the Bahamas, the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Multistory waterslides, ropes courses and even go-kart race tracks are among the gee-whiz attractions atop Norwegian Cruise Line 's giant, resortlike ships. The vessels also are packed with eateries, bars, casinos and showrooms.

The brand is known for its entertainment, including big Broadway shows such as "Beetlejuice." If you're looking for a Las Vegas-style resort at sea, this is your line.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania has carved out a niche with relatively small, upscale ships that offer a significant upgrade from mass-market vessels but aren't quite as fancy (or pricey) as luxury offerings.

Its seven ships feature a relaxed, country club ambience and inspired dining that appeal to a mostly older crowd.

Itinerary-wise, Oceania is known for destination-intensive voyages that typically are 10 nights or more in length, with some globe-circling trips as long as 180 days.

This France-based line is a specialist in expedition cruising , a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places on small, hardy vessels that carry their own landing craft.

Operating a fast-growing fleet of tough but upscale expedition ships (none carrying more than 264 passengers), Ponant is known for voyages to places like Antarctica and the Arctic.

If you're looking for waterslides and laser tag, this is not the cruise line for you.

Princess Cruises

Popular with middle-aged couples, retirees and multigenerational families, the "Love Boat" line's ships aren't as flashy (or big, for the most part) as those of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, and that's just the way its customers like it.

Princess Cruises ' customers also like its wide range of itineraries, including voyages in Asia and Australia, as well as closer-to-home places like the Caribbean. It's long been one of the dominant lines in the Alaska cruise market.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

This Miami-based luxury line operates some of the most opulent vessels at sea, including three recently unveiled Explorer-class ships billed as the most expensive luxury vessels ever built on a cost-per-berth basis.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises is particularly known for some of the most over-the-top suites at sea (including some bigger than the average American home ), some of the most inclusive fares in the cruise business and high levels of service. The only catch: You'll pay a pretty penny for it. Rooms on Regent ships start at around $1,000 per person per day and can cost as much as $5,500 per person per day.

Royal Caribbean

For megaresort fans, there's nothing quite like a Royal Caribbean vessel.

The line's biggest ships are more than 20% bigger than almost any others afloat (only MSC Cruises has ships that come close in size) and feature every type of amusement imaginable, from rock climbing walls and surfing pools to Broadway shows and ice skating rinks.

Families, in particular, will love this line, due to all the family-friendly activities and venues on its vessels. Royal Caribbean ships sail everywhere in the world, but the line's heaviest presence is in the Caribbean and Europe.

Another leader in luxury cruising, this seven-ship brand offers all-suite vessels, top-notch service and elegant cuisine.

As with other luxury lines, Seabourn offers a wide range of itineraries around the globe. It also recently jumped into more adventurous, expedition-style cruising with two new 264-passenger vessels designed to operate in polar regions such as Antarctica and the Arctic.

Silversea Cruises

Exquisite service, refined dining and well-appointed accommodations are hallmarks of this Monaco-based luxury line with more than a dozen vessels. Silversea Cruises is also known for its industry-leading array of off-the-beaten-path itineraries.

Its growing fleet of small expedition ships will take you everywhere from the Arctic to Papua New Guinea in style.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Fans of upscale hotel chain Ritz-Carlton will feel at home on one of this line's yacht-like vessels. Or, at least, that's the idea.

The cruising arm of Ritz-Carlton has been in operation for just a bit over a year, and the jury still is out on where it ranks in the pantheon of luxury cruise brands. The line notably struggled to get off the ground after years of construction delays for its first and only ship.

Dubbed Evrima, the line's only operating ship is a 298-passenger vessel designed to appeal to Ritz-Carlton regulars with an elegant, residential look. A second, bigger ship called Ilma that's already open for bookings debuts later this year.

This fast-growing line has dominated the world of river cruising for North Americans for years, and in the last decade, it's become a significant player in upscale ocean cruising as well. Viking 's 80 river ships operate on just about every major river in the world, and its 10 ocean ships (up from just one in 2015) can be found in a growing number of destinations, too.

Viking is known for impeccably designed vessels with modern Scandinavian interiors and offering unusual, port-intensive itineraries. They also operate with a mostly all-inclusive format, as Viking long has subscribed to a "no nickel-and-diming" philosophy. Just don't bother booking the family. Kids under 18 aren't allowed on Viking.

Virgin Voyages

This relatively new cruise line, backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, is reinventing mainstream cruising with a hipper, more inclusive, younger vibe (though not too young; its ships are adults-only). Think tattoo shops, karoake booths and no upcharges for tips or eateries.

Virgin Voyages ' first three ships ( Scarlet Lady , Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady ) have suites by acclaimed designer Tom Dixon. Destinations include the Dominican Republic, Mexico and a private beach club in the Bahamas, as well as parts of Europe and Australia.

Windstar Cruises

If the idea of sailing on a big ship makes you cringe, small-ship specialist Windstar could be the answer.

Its six vessels carry just 148 to 342 passengers — fewer than fit on a single big-ship lifeboat — and are wonderfully intimate.

Romantic types will love Windstar's three vessels with sails — a relative rarity. Foodies can choose one of the James Beard-themed cruises, which include market tours and cooking demonstrations with a James Beard Award-winning chef.

Royal Caribbean vs. Carnival: Which big-ship cruise line should you choose?

I f you're considering a cruise with Royal Caribbean or Carnival Cruise Line, you're looking at a big-ship experience with lots of activities.

These two companies are the largest in the cruise industry, each with two dozen ships carrying millions of passengers a year. They are popular for a reason: Their ships offer something for everyone, from kids to seniors.

Let's go head-to-head, Carnival versus Royal Caribbean, to highlight their similarities and differences and help you choose the line that's right for you.

Size of ships

Both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean have two sizes of megaships. Their smaller ships carry 3,000 to 4,000 passengers; their larger ones are huge and carry more than 5,000 guests. Royal Caribbean wins the battle of size, with seven of the world's largest ships — including Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas , the two largest cruise ships afloat.

Royal Caribbean's largest classes — Oasis Class and Icon Class — are so big they are divided into neighborhoods. Oasis Class ships feature a Central Park with real trees and a Boardwalk area with a carousel, slides that drop multiple decks and a special theater for high-diving shows. Icon Class ships have separate sections for young families, thrill seekers and adults looking for a beach club scene.

Not to be outdone, Carnival's largest ships — Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee — are divided into zones, such as Mardi Gras' French Quarter with a live jazz club.

No matter the size, all the ships of both lines qualify as floating resorts, with onboard casinos, pools, live entertainment, elaborate spas, lively dance clubs, lots of bars — and crowds.

Cabins and suites

Both lines cite with pride their price range for all vacationers, but you'll notice each excels in a different accommodation area.

Royal Caribbean is a better option if you want a huge selection of cabin categories. The cruise line offers everything from tight inside cabins with virtual balconies (an LED screen that looks like the ocean) to fancy two-story loft suites . Its largest ships have the most room choices, and you can book suites with views of the high-diving show or the ships' Royal Promenade, Central Park or Boardwalk areas. The soothing decor is like a Marriott or Hilton hotel, nice and slightly upscale.

Carnival wins for the size of its standard cabins, which are the largest in the industry. The decor is typically bright and casual. Specialty cabins on select ships include Family Harbor cabins, with access to a shared family lounge, and Havana suites, with daytime access to a private pool area. The newest ships have more suites than earlier vessels.

Food and drink

When looking at dining options on Royal Caribbean versus Carnival, Carnival has the edge for abundant included offerings, and Royal Caribbean leads with its number of extra-fee specialty restaurants .

Carnival fans will tell you the food on board is great, and most travel writers will agree the line shines in this area — including extra-fee options, such as impressive steakhouses and JiJi for Asian cuisine. Carnival's lineup of free eats is impressive — headlined by poolside burgers by Food Network star Guy Fieri, but also including Mexican, barbecue, excellent Italian-style pizza and Shaq's fried chicken.

If you like Indian cuisine, you are in for a treat with delicious vegetarian dishes on the main dining room menu each night. On select ships, Carnival has its own New Orleans bistros by Emeril Lagasse and breweries where the drink is accompanied by Fieri's barbecue (for a fee).

Most of Royal Caribbean's free food is found in its Windjammer Marketplace (the buffet) and main dining rooms, the focus again on typical cuisine you'd expect to find at a hotel. Ships offer a variety of extra-fee restaurants, with specialties ranging from sushi to steak .

A shining point in these alternative venues is Jamie's Italian, in partnership with British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. You also can pay for a burger and milkshake at Johnny Rockets on some of Royal Caribbean's larger ships.

Kids activities

Both cruise lines have well-established programs to keep your kids happy, so you can get some downtime to relax and do grown-up things. Both lines host more than a million children a year. The camplike programs include age-appropriate activities like arts and crafts, movies and sports and cool clubs for tweens and teens.

Royal Caribbean's Adventure Ocean program (for ages 3-12) includes an opportunity for kids to become Certified Jr. Adventure Scientists. There are also Royal Babies and Royal Tots options for those travelers with infants and toddlers, and cool hangouts for tweens and teens.

Carnival's Camp Ocean program (for ages 2-11) includes some activities designed to educate kids about the ocean. Carnival also has a partnership with Dr. Seuss that encourages children to read the classic books and get to know the characters in a participatory parade, during story times and at an extra-fee Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast hosted by the Cat in the Hat. Tweens and teens have separate lounges with video games, comfy seating and versatile spaces for games or dancing.

Onboard attractions

Active cruisers take note: Royal Caribbean is an innovative company and pushes the envelope on activities. All the cruise line's ships have rock climbing walls, and many have FlowRider surfing simulators .

Among the activity choices on various ships are ice skating rinks, carousels, zip lines, miniature golf, laser tag, escape rooms, waterslides , simulated skydiving setups, a 10-story thrill slide called Ultimate Abyss , a mechanical arm that lifts a London Eye-style pod high above the ship for views and other mind-blowing features. The larger the ship, the more onboard activities you'll find.

Carnival can't quite compete in this department, but its ships don't lack things to do. It's known for its WaterWorks water parks with multiple waterslides and splash areas for little kids, as well as for Bolt, the first roller coaster at sea (found only on Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee).

On select ships, you will find outdoor ropes courses where you can walk a plank off the ship (while in a harness), a top-deck ride involving pedaling a hanging recumbent bike, miniature golf, Imax theaters and indoor trampoline parks.

Entertainment

Royal Caribbean and Carnival take different approaches to onboard entertainment as well, though you'll never be bored on either line.

Royal Caribbean produces real Broadway shows (albeit shortened versions), such as "Grease," "Hairspray" and "Cats" on some of its biggest ships. Select ships feature innovative performance spaces; you'll find outdoor shows starring acrobats and high-divers at the line's AquaTheaters and ice skating shows at its ice skating rinks.

Multimedia shows in high-tech Two70 theaters on the Quantum Class ships feature performers and robotics. The Boleros salsa dance club is a popular late-night hangout spot. Don't miss the themed parades that take place on the Royal Promenade.

Carnival also excels at live entertainment, but its style is different from Royal Caribbean's. Instead of Broadway musicals, it offers 35- to 45-minute high-tech Playlist Productions, featuring singers and dancers performing to original compilations of familiar tunes. Carnival puts a big emphasis on comedy; the line's Punchliner Comedy Clubs host more than 27,000 live performances a year, which makes Carnival the largest employer of comics in the world.

Carnival also puts together its own live bands and musical acts — whether jazz, rock 'n' roll, show band or classical — that entertain at various bars and public areas throughout its ships.

While both lines offer a roster of games and contests — think Battle of the Sexes, the Newly (and Not So Newly)wed Game and some version of an adult scavenger hunt — Carnival has shipboard versions of the popular show "Family Feud." It's also known for audience participation games around the pool and rollicking music trivia.

Who is on board?

Carnival's focus is affordable contemporary cruising for everyone, with an emphasis on fun. Its "Fun Ships" provide a casual and carefree experience; the crowd consists mostly of American, young and young-at-heart adults and their families. A lot of people come aboard looking for fun times — but don't think it's a haven for debauchery. It's still a family cruise line.

Since Carnival sails from many U.S. ports, you'll find that many cruisers on board hail from nearby states and have driven to the ship — meaning different ships can have different vibes and passenger bases.

Royal Caribbean's crowd is a mix of international travelers and those from North America, including couples, families and singles from all walks of life. You'll find night owls on Royal Caribbean, too, though the crowd is a tad more upscale and less rowdy than on Carnival. That's partly because Royal Caribbean ships have a higher percentage of expensive suites on board and attract travelers who can afford to pay for that type of luxury.

Itineraries

Carnival ships mostly cruise in North America, with voyages in the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Canada/New England and the Mexican Riviera (from California). The line offers limited sailings in Europe.

Royal Caribbean puts much emphasis on North America — the Caribbean, Bahamas (including the line's own extravagant private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay ), Alaska, Canada/New England and the Mexican Riviera — but also sails several regions in Europe. Its ships can be found in other international destinations, such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan (sailing from China) and Singapore.

Bottom line

As a first-time cruiser, you can't go wrong with either Royal Caribbean or Carnival Cruise Line. Pick Royal Caribbean if you are looking for innovative attractions and a slightly more upscale atmosphere. Choose Carnival if you want great food and to have a blast in a casual environment at a more affordable price.

Hurricane Helene Forces Cruise Delays and Port Closures in Florida

As Hurricane Helene strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico, several cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean, are experiencing disruptions.

Both companies have had to delay ships returning to Florida ports as the storm approaches, and several embarkation and itinerary changes are now in effect.

Carnival Ships Remain at Sea

Carnival Cruise Line’s two smallest ships, Carnival Elation and Carnival Paradise , have both had their return delayed due to the closure of their homeports. Carnival Elation, homeported in Jacksonville, and Carnival Paradise, based in Tampa, are safely staying at sea to avoid the storm.

Guests booked on the following sailings of each ship, originally scheduled to depart on Thursday, September 26, have been informed that their cruises will not operate as planned.

We expect updates on when these ships can return and new sailing dates by 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 26.

The cruise line is closely monitoring the storm and awaiting post-storm port inspections to determine when operations can resume. Once the situation becomes clearer, compensation details will also be shared.

Royal Caribbean Ships Also Delayed

Royal Caribbean is also dealing with several disruptions. Serenade of the Seas, currently homeported in Tampa, is extending its voyage by two days due to the closure of Port Tampa Bay.

The ship will return on Sunday, September 29, and guests are compensated with complimentary Wi-Fi, drink package discounts, loyalty points, and reimbursement for altered flight plans. This delay has a cascading effect on the next cruise, which will now embark later but still conclude as initially scheduled on October 6.

Sailing from Port Canaveral, Utopia of the Seas and Adventure of the Seas are experiencing delays. Utopia of the Seas will return later than planned, with embarkation for its next sailing adjusted to start at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 27.

Adventure of the Seas will also be delayed due to the port’s closure but expects no changes to its itinerary.

MSC Seashore , based in Port Canaveral, will return a day late and arrive Friday when the port reopen s.

Port Closures and Hurricane Path

Jacksonville Port Authority and Port Tampa Bay closed to cruise traffic on the evening of September 25, as the U.S. Coast Guard set Port Condition Zulu, indicating gale-force winds were expected within 12 hours.

Port Canaveral is also closed, and delays are expected through the weekend. The hurricane’s extensive wind field means many areas will experience impacts even if the storm doesn’t make direct landfall.

Hurricane Helene is forecast to strengthen as it approaches the Florida coast, possibly reaching Category 3 or 4 intensity by landfall.

Royal caribbean cruises ltd. (rcl) is a trending stock: facts to know before betting on it.

Royal Caribbean (RCL) is one of the stocks most watched by Zacks.com visitors lately. So, it might be a good idea to review some of the factors that might affect the near-term performance of the stock.

Royal Caribbean reported revenues of $4.11 billion in the last reported quarter, representing a year-over-year change of +16.7%. EPS of $3.21 for the same period compares with $1.82 a year ago.

Compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.01 billion, the reported revenues represent a surprise of +2.58%. The EPS surprise was +15.88%.

The company beat consensus EPS estimates in each of the trailing four quarters. The company topped consensus revenue estimates three times over this period.

Without considering a stock's valuation, no investment decision can be efficient. In predicting a stock's future price performance, it's crucial to determine whether its current price correctly reflects the intrinsic value of the underlying business and the company's growth prospects.
