Wish to know about India's best secrets and hidden gems? Explore 'Mera Shandar Bharat, Safar Anokhey India Ka' to plan your next holiday!

The summers are here and the mercury is soaring. A perfect time to spend your days near water bodies to neat the heat. These are the times when Maldives, Andamans, Bali and Goa would be on everyone's wish list. But with the COVID scenario not allowing much degrees of freedom to explore the far of lands, here's a perfect week long road trip itinerary from Mumbai that will get you up close and personal with the gorgeous and lesser known beaches along the coastal belt of Maharashtra.

Day 1 - Mumbai to Awas

As you start off your journey down south from Mumbai, the first beach you will come across will be Awas beach. Just 30 minutes away from Mandwa Jetty in Alibaug, Awas beach is the perfect place for you to lazily sit beneath the towering whistling pine trees as you gorge on the vast and expansive beach area while the sun sets over the horizon.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 1/8 by Mastane Musafir

Not yet surrendered to commercialization, Awas Beach, in our opinion is the best beach on the Alibaug-Murud belt. If a peaceful period of time is what you seek, then Awas beach will definitely not disappoint you.

Day 2 - Awas to Harihareshwar

Breezing past through coastal route, overlooking gorgeous sea forts, castles and lighthouses along the Raigad coast, you will reach a beach where you are about to have an unparalleled experience.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 2/8 by Mastane Musafir

A 2.5 km long untouched black sand beach bed is the place where you are ought to have the most peaceful time in the company of the ocean. Major attraction at here is the Kal Bhairav temple, that draws numerous tourists here. But even if you are not spiritual, there is something for you at the place.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 3/8 by Mastane Musafir

Right behind the temple, along the route of the 'Parikrama' (circulation route around the temple) is a cliff side that opens up into the Arabian sea. A small trek down the cliff and there are some gorgeous rock formations on the walls of the cliff. Totally photogenic and Instagram worthy!

A ferry ride across lies Velas beach, that is well known for the nesting site of Olive Ridley Turtles. Watching these little creatures hatch and make way to the ocean is a phenomenon worth witnessing.

Day 3 - Harihareshwar to Ladghar

Sitting quietly on the coast of Dapoli, is this beach with azure-blue waters that will for sure give you peace to your strained eyes. The beach area is pretty vast and frequented by a few people.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 4/8 by Mastane Musafir

Being a sandy beach, you can indulge in the water sports activities. But our recommendation is to opt for the Dolphin Boat Ride, one of the best places to spot the beautiful dolphins, from a pretty close range.

Day 4 - Ladghar to Guhagar

One of Konkan's most famous beaches, Guhagar is the place for everyone who want to have a lovely time near the sea. On the way to Guhagar, a pit stop at Anjanwel Lighthouse will totally stun you with panoramic views of the sea.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 5/8 by Mastane Musafir

A little further from Guhagar, you will come across Velneshwar beach. A rock-free beach with soft sands and lined with coconut trees is perfect to stroll, swim or sun bathe. Best part of travelling on a coastal belt is every few kilometers you will come across a beautiful beach!

Day 5 - Guhagar to Ganpatipule

Well, Ganpatipule requires no introduction. It is one of the most popular beaches of Maharashtra. Silky white sand and cool surroundings are for sure to relieve the stress you have ensured en route the bumpy road.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 6/8 by Mastane Musafir

The road that runs parallel to the ocean offers some of the most lovely views and classic vantage points for those awesome pictures. The stretch of 10-12 km between Ganpatipule and Ratnagiri is one of our favorites, because the views are just awesome. Best enjoyed with a cup of tea from the roadside stalls while sitting up on the cliff watching the waves crash at the base.

Day 6 - Ganpatipule to Ganeshgule

It has been 2 years since we first visited this virgin beach, but the memories of the place are fresh in our hearts. Totally off the route, this gem of a beach is a testimony of serenity and beauty. Not known to many, it is a perfect hideaway if you are seeking solace and calmness.

Crystal clear water with turquoise blue shades, scintillating golden sands and a beach area that is completely for yourself, there is nothing more that you can ask for from a place.

A small cliff at the far end gives mindboggling views of the ocean and beach, and we saw one of the best sunrises of our lives. It totally enchants you with your beauty. To know more about Ganeshgule, click here.

Day 7 - Ganeshgule to Tarkarli

Just a few kilometers away from Malvan, Tarkarli is one of the places on west coast of India that showcases rich underwater life. A pristine white sand beach and a crystal clear water body is perfect for all water babies.

Photo of 7 Days, 7 Beaches - The perfect coastal road trip itinerary from Mumbai! 8/8 by Mastane Musafir

The ocean bed is laced with some beautiful coral reefs and beautiful fishes which you can witness by indulging in scuba diving or snorkeling. The vibe of the place increases manifold by its tranquil and calm atmosphere. And add to this, one of the most delicious cuisines on earth, the Malvani cuisine which is totally delectable and finger licking good.

To wrap up, all we've got to say is, while you may be enticed by the charm of Andamans or Maldives or Goa, the Konkan belt of Maharashtra, which is still not gripped by commercialization, has rich cultural and natural diversity on offer. The region is unadulterated & untapped and has some of the most gorgeous hidden gems. We can't wait to explore these gorgeous places again!

Mahabaleshwar is a popular weekend destination for Mumbaikars and it doesn’t disappoint anyone. Route:  Mumbai – Ganpatipule- Ratnagiri – Tarkarli

The drive to Ganpatipule from Mumbai is a vacation in itself. The best route from Mumbia is via Panvel – Khed and Chiplun. The road is quite good but could get bad during the monsoons. Together Ganpatipule-Ratnagiri region offers some of the best beaches of Maharshtra that would give Goa a run for its money. Route:  Mumbai – Amboli – Goa

Going to Goa ? Why not stop-over this wonderful little hidden gem called Amboli which has a waterfall by same name. Amboli a less known hill-station is still untouched by commercialization so stay options are limited. Goa is just 100 km from Amboli. There is probably not a soul in Mumbai who doesn’t know about Lonavala – it’s easily the most popular weekend getaway from Mumbai and Pune. But no matter how crowded or mainstream, a bike trip from Mumbai to Lonavala is an experience in itself – vastly different than taking a cab or bus. Some might consider the ride in rains dangerous, but the drive becomes extremely pleasant and refreshing during rain – just wear a water-proof jacket and you’re good to go. The surroundings are most beautiful and green during the monsoons and perfect for an invigorating road trip from Mumbai on a bike. Road Conditions: 2 wheelers are not allowed on the Mumbai – Pune expressway, but the old Mumbai – Pune Highway is in really good shape, and with all the cabs and buses taking the expressway, it leaves you with an extremely open road with hardly much traffic. I Drove From Mumbai To Goa & Here’s All You Need To Know About This Route

I Drove From Mumbai To Goa & Here’s All You Need To Know About This Route

I Drove From Mumbai To Goa & Here’s All You Need To Know About This Route

With the pandemic upon us, travelling sounds indulgent. But if I could travel anywhere right now, I would go to Goa, and that’s what I did (of course taking all the safety precautions). I drove from Mumbai to Goa all by myself, and I can tell you that it was one of the most enriching and rewarding experiences I have ever had. When I started planning this trip, I did a lot of research online to understand if there is anything in particular that I need to know. Unfortunately, I did not find enough information, so consider my experience as your guide to your next Mumbai to Goa road trip. Read on for all the details.

The Route I Took To Goa

Driving in your car is the safest thing to do right now, not just for yourself but also for others. Perhaps, that’s the only way to avoid human interaction and crowded flights. If you did not already know, there are two routes from Mumbai which will take you to Goa. One is the 14-hour coastal road which probably is more scenic and has fewer tolls. The other is the highway which has multiple tolls, but the roads are excellent, and navigation through Google maps is easy. I chose to take the highway as it was a shorter route. Although Google Maps showed 11 hours, it took me 13-14 hours as I took multiple stops. I made a break journey in four parts – Mumbai to Pune, Pune to Satara, Satara to Kolhapur and Kolhapur to Goa.

I fueled up my car so that I did not need to make a stop at a gas station. To enter Goa before it is dark, it is best to start at the crack of dawn. Try to start as early as 5 am in the morning.

Also, never rely on your YouTube for music. Have your playlist ready before your trip as the network is very poor on the way.   Here are 10 Best Spots You Will Find On A Road Trip From Mumbai To Goa

Pit-Stops I Made On The Way

I took four stops of half an hour each on the way.

Mumbai to Pune

I took the Mumbai Pune Expressway, which is a six-lane concrete, high-speed road. The distance spans around 110 km connecting Mumbai. It took around two and half hours to cover the distance. The expressway begins at Kalamboli and and ends at Dehu Road outskirts of Pune.

Pune to Satara

It took around 2 and half hours to cover a distance of 114km from Pune to Satara. The weather was amazing and the roads were even better. I also stopped here to eat my first meal after leaving Mumbai.

Satara to Kolhapur

Satara to Kolhapur by road is roughly 123 km in distance and took us around two hours. The drive was a breeze.

Kolhapur to Goa

Kolhapur to Goa took as six and half hours to cover a distance of around 350km. We crossed the Nipani Ajra and the Amboli Ajra road. Roads are excellent, but it gets even better as soon as you enter Belgaum. The entire landscape changes. The Nipani ajar road is dreamy. I set my tripod and clicked hundreds of pics there. The drive through Amboli Ghat can be scary so be sure you cross the area before it gets dark. Besides, there are no street lights, and so, driving in the night can be challenging.

View this post on Instagram   What’s a road trip without any halts and this road, Nippani Ajra Link Road, totally deserves a special attention. This came on my route from Mumbai to Goa and its so gorgeous and dreamy that I had to do take a walk here :) AMA about Mumbai-Goa roadtrip in comments below. . . . #roadtrip #feelkaroreelkaro #feelitreelit #curlytales #travelblogger #travelinsta #ilovemyindia #Travelreel A post shared by Kamiya Jani (@kamiya_jani) on Oct 6, 2020 at 3:59am PDT

But to sum it up, it was the most scenic, stunning journey for me. The entire stretch is not a four-lane highway, but green, with zero bumps in the road—a beautiful drive. I would totally recommend it.

What I Ate On The Road

All the packets of chips and crisps have their place in a road trip meal plan, but nothing beats parcels of home-cooked food to keep you company on the road. And at a time where eating at a restaurant or a roadside dhaba is not the best option, it is best to stay loaded with home-made snacks on a long road trip. I took my first food break only after I crossed the Pune city. I parked my car under a tree and devoured into some fantastic home-made food. Oh! that was some moment.

Tip: be sure to carry an extra bag to throw all your rubbish.

Fuel & Toll Charges

I drove my BMW GT, and the diesel cost was ₹2000. However, the fuel cost can vary based on the mileage and the car you are driving. I crossed seven toll gates and the toll charges summed up to ₹685 (I know, that’s quite a lot but hey, I did not mind paying for the smooth roads I glided my car on). You can go cashless and avoid human interaction if you pay via Qr code (Paytm). However, some tolls don’t have this facility, so it is always better to carry some cash.

Other Tips & Tricks

Wear a mask every time you make pit-stops and step out of the car. Also, keep a sanitiser bottle handy. I must have used a litre of sanitiser on the way (overdone it a bit), but did not want to take chances with my safety.  Here are 8 Emergency Road Trip Essentials You Need To Have In Your Car

A quip tip: Avoid drinking too much water on the road so that you do not have to take too many toilet breaks. The toilet facilities are not great. I stopped at two petrol pumps but did not find a decent toilet. I took my first toilet break near the food court near Lonavala. It was clean. The second toilet spot was at a fuel station near Satara. However, be sure to carry toilet paper and disinfectants and use Indian toilets only.

15 Best Day Trips from Mumbai

Mumbai is a sprawling, monstrous city that seems to be constantly expanding and almost never-ending.

It’s a place of history, culture, and too often, mayhem as well.

While the city is a must-visit place during any trip to India, the size, scale, noise, and pollution of Mumbai can be all too overwhelming, all too quickly.

Luckily, the city does end, and in the surrounding area – outside the urban mass of apartments and suburbs and slums – you can easily escape Mumbai for the day to find some peace and refreshing, clean air along the way.

There are plenty of interesting day trips to make – from exploring ancient Buddhist caves to adventuring into India’s very own wine region.

There are beaches, waterfalls and national parks to discover, amongst much, much more.

Here are our favorite day trips to make from Mumbai.

1. Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves, Mumbai

The Elephanta Caves are a spectacular and intriguing UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s found just a short journey outside of the city center of Mumbai.

The caves are found on Elephanta Island – located in the Mumbai Bay – which was used as an important religious site by Buddhists and then Hindus.

The caves are cut from the rock itself.

Inside the many different, ancient caverns can be found an array of sculptures and inscriptions that depict Hindu epics and deities.

Even today, the caves are a place of worship and pilgrimage for many Hindus in the Mumbai area, and you can expect to experience a colorful display of culture and religion when you visit.

Recommended tour : Half-Day Mumbai Elephanta Caves Tour

Jain Temple, Nashik

Nashik is located a few hours to the northeast of Mumbai and makes for a wonderful day trip away from the city.

This is an area of rolling hills and lush, green valleys.

Importantly, though, Nashik is also India’s premier wine-producing region.

Although many visitors may not be expecting to find fine wine when they visit the country, in Nashik, they are guaranteed to be pleasantly surprised.

Wine production here is a relatively new art form, but already the locals of Nashik are competing with the biggest international players.

There are several wineries to visit, with the most popular being the Sula Winery – is the nation’s largest and most well-known domestic wine producer.

You can call in for tastings and to see the vineyard in action.

Available tour : Nashik: Private Full-Day Wine Tour with Tastings From Mumbai

Murud Janjira fort, Alibaug

Alibaug is found overlooking the ocean to the south of Mumbai.

There are great connections – by road, train or ferry from Mumbai – making this the perfect place to spend the day.

Alibaug is known for its variety of beaches and unique seafront; surrounding the town are many stretches of sand – from black sand beaches to extreme tidal areas.

A favorite tourist spot is the Kolaba Fort, which is built a few kilometers out from the shore; it has long played a historic role in the region.

Spend the day enjoying the sights and lounging on the beaches, but make sure you stay for the sunset before returning to Mumbai, as the sunsets over Alibaug are some of the most beautiful on the coast.

4. Matheran

Matheran Hill Station

Matheran is a small hill station that has become one of Mumbai’s most loved day trips.

Matheran, in stark contrast to Mumbai, has been declared pollution free.

This charming hill station has banned all cars, and being 88 meters above sea level, offers a much-needed respite from the humid, polluted city below.

To get here, you must take the train, as no private vehicles are allowed in the town itself.

There are many other forms of transport inside the town though, from handcarts to rickshaws, but really, the best way to get around is to hike along the spectacular trails that offer dramatic viewpoints out over the surrounding green, landscapes.

5. Kanheri Caves

Kanheri Caves

Just to the north of Mumbai’s center, you can find the historic Kanheri Caves.

Located within the boundaries of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, this is a vast complex of over one hundred caves, many of which have been shaped and carved by hand over centuries into the shape they are today.

The area was originally used by Buddhists – as far back as the 1st century BC – and then Hindu worshippers added their own layers of sculpture and worship to the caves.

A lengthy, rock-hewn staircase leads to the cave entrance, which you will find is impressively pillared and hewn straight from the rock itself.

It’s a mammoth feat of engineering that will leave you bewildered and humbled.

Recommended tour : Kanheri Caves: 5-Hour Excursion from Mumbai

Karnala, India

Karnala is a small area of protected land that’s found extremely close to the city of Mumbai, making it an excellent location to escape the chaos of the city and find some small level of solitude.

Karnala is home to a bird sanctuary, which, although very tiny in area – just a few square kilometers – is full of wildlife and greenery.

There are hundreds of species of bird that flock to Karnala, and many hikers and outdoor lovers are drawn here for the wild beauty too.

The sanctuary is found around the remains of an ancient fort that stands atop a huge pinnacle of rock, making for a dramatic sight.

The fort can be reached along a lovely trail that will take you through the bird sanctuary and to the top of the peak.

7. Pawna Lake

Pawna Lake, India

Pawna Lake is found close to the city of Pune, to the southeast of Mumbai.

It’s an excellent outdoor location, perfect for hiking, strolling, picnicking, or simply relaxing and enjoying the calm, tranquil waters.

Although it’s artificial, you will find it is still very much a beautiful, green and outdoorsy place to visit.

A favorite local hobby in the area is to bring a tent and camp out under the stars, to wake up to the lapping waters in the morning.

It’s definitely a place that’s worth a trip from Mumbai, even if it’s just for the day.

Aga Khan Palace, Pune, Maharashtra, India

Pune is another sprawling city, so if you are looking for a relaxing escape from Mumbai, then this might not be the best place to visit.

If, however, you are looking to experience one of the most fascinating cities in this part of India, then a day trip to Pune is very much worth it.

This is a historic place – home to the world famous Aga Khan Palace, a lavish display of wealth and power that dates back to the 19th century.

It’s also the site of the Gandhi National Memorial, where the great man’s ashes are preserved.

There are plenty of old forts and museums to visit, while there is a real mix of ancient culture and modern India is visible across the city.

9. Lonavala

Lonavala, India

Lonavala is a place that’s really like few others near Mumbai.

This beautiful hill station is almost dream-like, with misty mountains and green rolling hills that stretch for mile upon mile.

If you arrive straight from Mumbai, the clean air and cold climes will shock you as much as the spectacular landscapes do.

There’s plenty to do in the hill station and the surrounding area, from visiting the ancient cave system of Karla to the dramatic peaks and cliffs that can be hiked.

10. Khandala

Khandala

Khandala is another beautiful hill station that’s actually found just a few miles away from Lonavala.

This town is found at an elevated height, overlooking a scenic, green, and misty valley.

It’s a real favorite for those from the nearby cities who are looking to enjoy a spot of hiking; there are some great walking routes that lead to panoramic viewpoints.

Kashid, India

Kashid is found along the coast to the south of Mumbai.

This beachside town is a great place to spend the day relaxing on white sands and enjoying the sea.

This is a quiet spot – at least in comparison to Mumbai – and there are even a few resorts where you can get food or enjoy a drink, or spend the night if you really want a longer break from Mumbai.

Vasai, India

Vasai is a city to the north of Mumbai, found on the other side of the Vasai River.

The city is full of colonial relics, including the famous Vasai Fort, which was built hundreds of years ago by the Portuguese.

13. Silvassa

Silvassa

Found to the north of Mumbai, Silvassa is a unique city to visit; for years, this was a Portuguese colonial city.

There are still a lot of remnants of Portuguese rule, and a very distinct history waiting to be discovered.

The surrounding area has many natural wonders too, including some incredible waterfalls.

14. Rajmachi

Rajmachi, India

Rajmachi is an old ruined fort that’s found in a breathtaking location atop verdant, green cliffs.

The fort was an important defensive structure against the British when they began their conquest of India, but ultimately, it fell.

It’s now a protected monument and well worth a day trip from Mumbai.

15. Trimbak

Trimbak, India

Trimbak is a fantastically cultural town that’s found away from Mumbai, close to the nearby town of Nashik.

Trimbak is the site of Trimbakeshwar, a Hindu temple that holds an incredibly sacred place in the religion.

It’s very much an important pilgrimage site and held to be very sacred.

As such, the whole town is a culturally vibrant and exciting place to visit.

Mumbai Metro 3, linking Colaba, Bandra and SEEPZ, opens next week; tickets priced at ₹ 10- ₹ 50

The first metro corridor to connect congested south mumbai, link several disconnected business districts along the island city and suburbs.

MUMBAI: The city’s first and Maharashtra’s second underground metro—Line 3 or the Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ line—is days away from partially opening for the public. This route, when fully operational on the entire 33.5 km, will change the dynamics of mass transport. It will also be the first metro corridor to connect congested South Mumbai, will link several disconnected business districts along the island city and suburbs, the two airport terminals and beyond. With Metro-3 partially opening to the public in the first week of October, it will be the fourth metro line to be functional.

Mumbai, India. Sep 24, 2024: First look at newly constructed Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, ahead of the inauguration of Mumbai's first underground Metro. Mumbai, India. Sep 24, 2024. (Photo by Raju Shinde/HT Photo) (Hindustan Times)

What’s in store for Mumbai

The Aqua Line, as it is called, is described as the trunk route for all the metro corridors put together in Mumbai. Cutting through the belly of Mumbai’s deccan basalt rock, it will begin from Aarey depot, criss-crossing beneath forests, highways and bridges to reach the Bandra-Kurla Complex. It covers a total of 12.44 km.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), which is responsible for making this metro rail a reality, is presently awaiting the final nod from the commissioner of metro rail safety (CMRS). “We are poised to commission Phase 1 on the Aarey-BKC corridor by the first week of October. The CMRS inspection is still underway. We have received approval for the rolling stock while the documentation process is on for the line,” said Ashwini Bhide, managing director, MMRCL.

In all, 10 stations will be open for Phase 1, which will be operational from 6.30 am to 10.30 pm on weekdays and 8.30 am to 10.30 pm on weekends. There will be nine rakes, undertaking 96 trips each day. The MMRCL authorities expect each eight-car train to ferry 2,500 passengers while the headway between two metro trains will be 6.40 minutes.

Forty-eight train captains will manoeuvre the trains, although technically they can operate driverless. The fares for the Aarey-BKC route will be in the range of ₹ 10 to ₹ 50. “When the entire corridor is ready till Cuffe Parade, the maximum fare will be ₹ 70,” said officials. “Initially, passengers will be issued paper tickets with a QR code while NCMC cards will be activated gradually.

Metro 3’s second phase is 21.34 km long, and once it is operational, there will be 31 rakes expected to ferry around 13 lakh passengers daily. The authorities said that 15% of the Line 3 traffic was expected out of the traffic on the suburban railway while 6.5 lakh vehicles could also go off-road. “We expect those commuters taking AC locals from Borivali to BKC and further south to move to Metro 3,” they said.

Phase-2 of this project till Cuffe Parade is expected to be ready by mid-2025, anywhere between March and May. Sources said there were two major works on stations at Worli and Girgaum that were underway. “The work at the two stations is critical,” said an MMRC official. “We aim to finish it by December. Once that happens, we can begin the second phase between March and May next year. We are looking at extending the line till Acharya Atre Marg before that.”

Metro 3 and money

At present, there is meagre mobile phone network inside the Metro 3 corridor. The officials said that a third-party aggregator has been awarded this work. While Airtel’s work is at an advanced stage, Vodafone has begun work and Jio is also in the fray now. There will also be wifi inside the trains.

There is scope to generate revenue from 1.50 lakh square feet of commercial space available in the BKC, Siddhivinayak and Cuffe Parade and airport stations for which tenders have been floated. MMRCL expects to earn ₹ 200 crore annually.
