NATIONAL TOURISM DAY HISTORY:

National Tourism Day was first celebrated by the Indian government in 1948, according to reports. It was intended to protect national heritage and create popular tourist attractions throughout the country.

In India, the tourism ministry is responsible for forming national policies to promote and develop tourism. It also coordinates with central, state agencies and the public sector. National Tourism Day is dedicated to celebrating the unique characteristics of our country. Celebrated on January 25 every year, the day is observed to give a boost to the economy, and to promote and create awareness about the many tourist spots of India – be it ecological, business, heritage, or even educational. On the occasion of this year’s National Tourism Day, let’s understand the year’s theme and celebrations.

The National Tourism Day is celebrated on January 25, while the World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27. The main focus of celebrating this day in India is to educate people about the benefits of traveling, to appreciate the country’s beauty and spread awareness of the importance of tourism.

The theme this year is “Sustainable Journeys, Timeless Memories.” Every year, the theme is such that different aspects of the the country’s tourism are highlighted.

How is it celebrated

Different states have planned celebrations with their unique twist this year. Madhya Pradesh has tweeted about ‘Sair Sapata’ an evening full of cultural celebrations planned by the state government.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism has inaugurated Bharat Parv 2024 to commemorate the 75th Republic Day celebrations. “This celebration of India’s rich cultural tapestry promises to be an unforgettable experience,” the Ministry of Tourism tweeted. From January 23 to January 31, the Ministry of Tourism shall organise various cultural programmes, encourage and display diverse cuisines, promote stunning handicrafts and vibrant performances as a part of this initiative at Red Fort, Delhi.

India boasts of a rich and diverse cultural heritage, exquisite mountains and dense green forests. Its calming beaches and natural beauty make India one of the most preferred locations for a holiday. To celebrate this rich heritage and spread awareness about tourism and its impact on the Indian economy, National Tourism Day is celebrated yearly on 25 January. The day was established to promote the tourism industry. The occasion recognises the contribution of the sector towards the growth and sustainability of local communities and places. This day is all about drawing attention towards the significance of tourism, and its political, social, financial, and cultural value.

It was the year 1948 when a tourism traffic committee was established for the promotion of tourism culture in India. In 1958, a tourism department was setup under the Ministry of Tourism and Communication. For years, the government has focused on taking steps to to boost tourism in the nation.

Significance

The country’s rich history and cultural and geographical diversity make India one of the most popular tourist destinations among foreigners. The country offers various options to travellers including cultural, cruise, nature, educational, rural, heritage, and eco-tourism. National policies for the development and promotion of tourism are designed and carried out by the Ministry of Tourism.

As a part of National Tourism Day, cultural events, seminars and other programmes are organised by the central government. Several states also organise events to promote tourism in their region.

National Tourism Day assumes even greater significance for a country like India, which is among the oldest civilisations in the world and has a history of multiculturalism. The history of tourism day in India dates back to the post independence era. In 1948, India set up its first ever Tourist Traffic Committee to promote tourism for the economic and financial well-being of the country.

In 1958, India created its tourism department under the Ministry of Transport and Communication. This department was headed by the Deputy General in the rank of Joint Secretary.

National Tourism Day is celebrated in the country with great enthusiasm and grandeur. Several events, workshops, seminars, and programs are held in different parts of the country to create awareness about the significance of tourism.

Context: Recently, a Report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture was released.

National Tourism Day is celebrated across the country on January 25 every year to appreciate India’s beauty and spread awareness about the importance of tourism and its impact on the economy.
This year’s theme: for National Tourism Day is ‘Rural and Community Centric Tourism’.
The central government is organizing the main event in Telangana’s Pochampally village, a weavers’ hamlet on the outskirts of Hyderabad .
Known for its famous hand-woven Ikat sarees, Pochampally was selected as one of the best tourism villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 2021.

Tourism sector in India

Travel and Tourism in India was the largest service industry: and was worth $234 bn in 2018.
According to The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC): the tourism industry in India generated $194 bn or 6.8% of India’s GDP in 2019.
The tourism sector in India : is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% to $460 bn by 2028 which is 9.9% of GDP.

About National Tourism Policy:

supporting tourism-related MSMEs.
It include ‘perceptions related to safety and security’, and weak engagement between the Centre and the states.
Government has also identified factors that hamper the growth of the tourism sector in the country.
It also mentions ‘the menace of touts’ and ‘low standards of cleanliness and hygiene’ as other factors that deter the industry from leveraging its full potential.
To promote investment in the tourism sector, draft mentions granting of industry status to the sector, along with formally granting infrastructure status to hotels.
The draft policy offers framework conditions to help this sector, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

Key recommendations of committee:

National Tourism Council (NTC):

Government should create National Tourism Council (NTC) on the model of GST council.
Aim: To give recommendations to the Central and State governments on various issues of the tourism sector and its stakeholders.

Tourism, Travel and Hospitality sector:

Spending Capex above Rs. 25 crores will reduce operating costs for hospitality players through subsidized rates of electricity and water charges, property tax, development tax etc.
It will also attract investments in the Sector.
It praises eight States Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand which have accorded industry status to hospitality projects.
It recommended to include Tourism in concurrent list.
It will help in simplifying issues of the pandemic-hit Indian tourism sector since tourism is a multi-sectoral activity.
It includes projects like “Infrastructure Development at Puri, Shree Jagannath Dham-Ramachandi-Prachi River front at Deuli under Mega Circuit” of the PRASHAD Scheme and Integrated Development of tourist circuit around specific themes (SWADESH DARSHAN) has been pending since 2015.
It recommends Ministry to identify the issues causing delay in payment of various expenditure items with the ITDC (India Trade Development Corporation).

Facts about India Tourism :

The country currently has 32 cultural sites, 7 natural sites, and one mixed property.
India’s most organic state : The Himalayan state of Sikkim has come out as the most organic state in present day India. The state reportedly has some 47.3% under forest cover.
Highest Rail Bridge in the world : The country is home to the highest rail bridge in the world. The 1,315 m long Chenab Bridge is located in Jammu and Kashmir, and is 35 m higher than the Eiffel Tower.
One of the most untouched places on earth : India’s North Sentinel Island is one of the most untouched places in the world. The island is home to the Sentinelese people, who have isolated themselves from the world.
The oldest fort in India: Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Fort is said to be the oldest in the country. It used to be home to royal treasures, and is said to have been built 3500 years ago.
Wildlife sanctuaries : The country has a total of 566 wildlife sanctuaries. Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the country.
Cleanest village in Asia : Mawlynnong located in the state of Meghalaya is ranked as the cleanest village in Asia.

Challenges Associated with Tourism sector in India:

The tourism industry has been heavily hit by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic: The World Tourism Organization has said that tourist arrivals around the world are not expected to return to their pre-pandemic levels until 2024.
Fear of Uncertainty: Due to the spread of coronavirus and enforcement of social distancing norms peoples are fearing and unwillingness to come out from their home.
Lack of arrival of international tourists: International traveling was banned by most of the countries to control the spreading chain of coronavirus. Therefore, the Indian tourism sector got a smaller number of tourists as compared to earlier and no foreign exchange earnings.
Business Hurdles, Lack of Hygiene and Comfortable accommodation: During COVID-19, restrictions laid down by the government to control outstretch of coronavirus impacted on most tourists and tour operators to get adequate business.
Revenue loss during COVID-19: People are not ready to go outside of their home and they are not willing to take tours. Due to closure of tour destinations, monuments, heritage sites and lack of arrival of tourists the Indian tourism projected a revenue loss of Rs. 1.25 trillion.
Tour operators have shut down their business: the majority of registered and unregistered tour operators closed their operations in India; hence it affected much on profitability and productivity of the Indian tourism industry.
Lack of integrated tourism promotion: Promotional activities are barred due to the spread of COVID-19 and there is no benefit of promotion of tourism during COVID-19.
Loss of productivity and Profitability: Indian tourism industry was thoroughly put to a stop to their services. Therefore there is no productivity of the tourism activities and profitability.

Government of India’s recent Initiatives:

Ministry should take the advantage of the regional, national and international linkages developed in North Eastern States so far in the tourism front.
All the states and UT/s should be given the exact same amount as per its budgeted allocation.
It is an online programme where one can learn about tourism at their own time, space, path and pace.
The successful completion of this programme would enable the learner to become a Certified Tourist Facilitator of Ministry of Tourism, government of India.
Ministry of Tourism takes the initiative with Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of External Affairs for achieving the same.
The “Incredible India 2.0” Campaign of the Ministry marks a shift from the generic promotions being undertaken across the world to market specific promotional plans and content creation.
Further, it urged all the states and UTs to open their important monuments till late night for visitors.
Government promotes states to organize surveys in their respective states to understand how the foreign tourists perceive India and should work towards removing negative impressions.
This will lead to change the perception of India in the mind of foreign tourists which will yield us good results for promotion of tourism.

Way Forward:

As a travel destination, few other nations can offer the diversity of products and experiences found in India. The travel and tourism industry offers significant opportunity for fulfilment of key national growth imperatives including employment generation across all regions of the country, and growth in the sector can contribute to overall economic development in the country. However, tourism in India, though growing consistently, is yet to realize its full potential due to several challenges that plagued the sector. Alleviation of these challenges will be essential for the industry to realize its full potential.

National Tourism Day 2023 – Theme, Significance, Quiz

In India, the National Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 25 January. It was established by the Indian government to raise awareness of the importance of tourism for the growth of the country’s economy. India is a diverse country with various cultures and a rich history and is admired by tourists from all over the world.

In view of the current pandemic, the thought of travel for relaxation would seem like a difficult image and everything is going virtual nowadays. Moreover, World Tourism Day was celebrated as a virtual event, so, the National Tourism Day also hopes to go virtual. During this situation, Ministry has been organizing a series of webinars from 21st January to 22nd February under the overall theme of Dekho Apna Desh (DAD), showcasing the diverse culture, heritage, destinations, and tourism products of the country.

National Tourism Day 2023 – Date

National Tourism Day was established to promote the tourism industry and recognize its sequel to the growth and sustainability of tourist destinations and thereby to the local communities. National Tourism Day 2023 Theme

National Tourism day 2021 theme is ‘Dekho Apna Desh’. The Ministry of Tourism has been organizing seminars around the theme beginning from January 21 to February 22, 2021.

India is a diverse nation, rich history, cultural and geographical diversity make the country one of the most popular tourist destinations among foreign travelers. Certainly, this diversity of India itself makes it a prime attraction for tourists. It offers various forms of tourism, like- cultural, heritage, cruise, educational, business, sports, rural, adventure, polo and golf, medical, and eco-tourism.

There are 38 World Heritage sites in India that are recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as of August 2019. These are places of importance of cultural or natural heritage as described in the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, established in 1972.

Tourism plays a huge role in boosting India’s economy. According to reports, the World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated Rs.16.91 lakh crore (US$240 billion) or 9.2% of India’s GDP in 2018. According to statistics, over 7.7% of Indian employees work in the tourism industry. Every year, the country is visited by millions of foreign tourists. It reemphasizes the fact that tourism needs to be taken seriously. For the same reason government is taking great efforts to make sure that the country gets cleaner, more amenities and facilities are introduced at railway stations and public places, and general safety measures are undertaken at popular spots.

In 2019, India was ranked 34th on the world travel and tourism competitiveness index moving up 6 places from 2018.

Tourism Department

National policies for the promotion and development of tourism are designed and carried out by the Ministry of Tourism. The Ministry of Tourism is the nodal agency for the formulation of national policies and programs and for the co-ordination of activities of various Central Government Agencies, State Governments/UTs, and the Private Sector for the development and promotion of tourism in the country. This Ministry is headed by the Union Minister of State for Tourism. The present Minister of State (IC) is Shri. Prahlad Singh Patel.

Visa Policy in India

India needs citizens of most countries to hold a valid passport and apply for a travel visa at their local Indian embassy or consulate, prior to the visit. Tourists can apply directly by mail or in person, or through their local travel services company. India has recently implemented an online method for citizens of 168 countries to apply for an e-Tourist Visa.

Nationals of countries like Bhutan, Maldives, and Nepal don’t require a travel visa to enter India. And the citizens of Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, DPR Korea, Jamaica, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia, Nepal, South Africa, and Uruguay are not required to pay a fee when acquiring an Indian visa.

National Girl Child Day 2023

As a measure to boost tourism, the Indian Government executed a new visa policy in November 2014, allowing tourists and business visitors to obtain a “visa on arrival” at 28 international airports , by acquiring an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before arrival, without having to visit an Indian consulate or visa center.

INDIA celebrates the occasion of National Tourism Day a day before Republic Day. National Tourism is a day established by the Government to promote the culture and boost the tourism sector of the country. It is observed to highlight the importance of tourism for the economy of the country.

India is a land of rich culture and diversity. Every corner of the country has something fascinating to provide and something beautiful for the eyes to capture. With 29 states and 7 union territories, India is one of the best countries with eyeconic destinations and attracts millions of tourists every year. Therefore, on this occasion, we bring you some interesting facts about the tourism sector of the country.

Interesting Facts About Indian Tourism

1. The travel and tourism industry contributed a total of $124.8 billion to the GDP in India in 2015 — this accounted for approximately 6% of India’s total GDP.

2. Tourism in India provides 40 million jobs. The sector is expected to grow at an annual average growth rate of 7.9% till 2023, making India the third fastest-growing tourism destination over the next decade.

3. Tourist arrivals in India increased to 8,91,000 in November from 7,54,000 in October 2016. It averaged 4,26,846.43 from 2000 until 2016, reaching an all-time high of 9,13,000 in December 2015 and a record low of 1,29,286 in May 2001.

4. The country is home to 40 UNESCO heritage sites. The last site to be added to the World Heritage Site list is Dholavira, a Harappan city that is located in the city of Gujarat. The country currently has 32 cultural sites, 7 natural sites, and one mixed property.

5. The Himalayan state of Sikkim has come out as the most organic state in present-day India. The state reportedly has some 47.3% under forest cover. Moreover, the state has also banned single-use plastic, which includes packaged drinking water bottles.

6. The country is home to the highest rail bridge in the world. The 1,315 m long Chenab bridge is located in Jammu and Kashmir and is 35 m higher than the Eiffel Tower.

7. India’s North Sentinel Island is one of the most untouched places in the world. The island is home to the Sentinelese people, who have isolated themselves from the world

8. Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra Fort is said to be the oldest in the country. It used to be home to royal treasures and is said to have been built 3500 years ago. The Kangra Fort withstood 52 attacks during its lifetime. Today, the fort is standing in ruins and is on the outskirts of the town of Kangra.

9. India is home to one of the seven wonders of the world- the Taj Mahal. The memorial built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal represents the architectural styles of Persia, Islam, Turkey, and India.

10. In 2013, Mumbai was the second cheapest city in the world for US travelers staying in five-star hotels.

INTRODUCTION

Cuisines, culture, people, and heritage have long been essential in shaping economies and societies, making tourism a key driver of any country’s development. It is crucial in fostering global understanding, creating jobs, and driving inclusive growth. To make India a global travel destination, India has set an ambitious target of a USD 3 trillion tourism economy by 2047 .

The theme for World Tourism Day 2024, ‘Tourism and Peace,’ emphasizes the vital connection between tourism and peacebuilding. It emphasizes how travel, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism practices can contribute to conflict resolution, reconciliation, and the promotion of global peace.

HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE

World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27 to commemorate the adoption of the UNWTO's (United Nations World Tourism Organisation) statutes in 1970 . The day aims to raise awareness of tourism's role in international cooperation, sustainable development, and fostering cultural exchange. Each year, a specific theme addresses current trends and challenges in the sector. In 2024 , Georgia will host World Tourism Day, showcasing its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes, and dedication to sustainable tourism practices.

INDIA CELEBRATES THE VIBRANT SPIRIT OF WORLD TOURISM DAY!

The Ministry of Tourism celebrated World Tourism Day with the theme "Tourism and Peace." The event was graced by the Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar who emphasised the importance of achieving excellence in hospitality and service. He highlighted India's transformation

On the occasion, the Vice President of India launched the following initiatives :

· Paryatan Mitra and Paryatan Didi were piloted in six tourist destinations across India: Orchha (Madhya Pradesh), Gandikota (Andhra Pradesh), Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Aizawl (Mizoram), Jodhpur (Rajasthan), and Sri Vijaya Puram (Andaman & Nicobar Islands). The program aims to elevate the overall experience for tourists in destinations by having them meet ‘tourist-friendly’ people like cab driver, hotel staff etc have been trained to transform into proud Ambassadors and storytellers for their destination. Special emphasis is being placed on training women and youth to develop innovative tourism products and experiences such as heritage walks, food and craft tours, nature treks, homestays, and other destination-specific offerings.

Best Tourism Village Winners: Best Tourism Villages Competition was introduced in 2023. The focus was to identify and recognize villages which preserve and promote cultural and natural assets through community-based values and commitment to sustainability in all aspects. This year, a total of 991 applications were received from 30 States and UTs, out of which 36 villages were recognised as winners across 8 categories of the Best Tourism Villages competition 2024.

· Incredible India Content Hub and Digital Portal: The revamped Incredible India digital portal Incredible India Content Hub was launched .

INCREDIBLE INDIA: BRINGING ATITHI DEVO BHAVA TO LIFE

One of the oldest civilisations in the world, India is a mosaic of multicultural experiences. With a rich heritage and myriad attractions, the country is among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. To promote India as a premier global tourist destination, the Incredible India campaign was launched in 2002. It changed the paradigm of Indian Tourism with each passing year -

2005: “Atithi Devo Bhava” was introduced to encourage Indian citizens to treat tourists with hospitality, stressing cleanliness, friendliness, and safety for international visitors. It aims to improve the perception of India as a welcoming and tourist-friendly nation.

2017: Incredible India 2.0 was introduced with a focus on digital promotion and a revamped marketing strategy targeting niche segments like adventure, medical, and wellness tourism.

2022: The campaign celebrated two decades of promoting Indian tourism. New initiatives such as India@75 and various celebrations for the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav were integrated into tourism promotions.

Incredible India Tourist Facilitator Certification Programme has been available online since 1 January 2020. It is a digital initiative that aims to create an online learning platform and a pool of well-trained professional tourist facilitators across the country to support tourists.

The Incredible India campaign has evolved over two decades, continuously adapting to global trends and challenges while remaining a cornerstone of India's tourism promotion efforts. Keep on adding new milestones to India’s Tourism Industry.

INDIAN TOURISM: GLOBAL IMPRINTS

46 th UNESCO World Heritage Meeting : For the first time, India proudly hosted the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee Meeting, from 21st to 31st July 2024. This significant event marked a milestone in India's longstanding association with the World Heritage Convention, which began in 1977.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 46th WHC session on 21 July 2024. In the inaugural session, in line with his vision of "Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi, " Prime Minister Modi announced a $1 million grant to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. This contribution will support capacity building, technical assistance, and conservation efforts, particularly benefiting Global South countries.

43rd World Heritage Site : Moidams from Assam became India's 43 rd World Heritage Site. Located in the Charaideo district of Assam, Moidams are sacred burial mounds of the Ahom dynasty, reflecting six centuries of cultural and architectural development.Five properties have been nominated as World Heritage Sites during the last five years. These include Dholavira (Harappan City), Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Santiniketan, India, Sacred Ensemble of Hoysalas and Moidams from Assam.
Record-breaking international Arrivals : With 14.3 million international tourists in 2022 and $17.6 billion in revenue, India is fast becoming one of the world's most sought-after travel destinations.

INITIATIVES TO BOOST THE TOURISM SECTOR IN INDIA

Dekho Apna Desh initiative – Launched in 2020

Aims to encourage domestic travel by promoting India’s rich heritage and lesser-known destinations. Major efforts include:

Webinars and on-ground promotions for lesser-known destinations.
Digital booklet on 75 Incredible Sites under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Dekho Apna Desh – People's Choice 2024 : Campaign launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 7 th March, 2024, which will end on 15 th October, 2024. This Campaign seeks public feedback on the best tourist attractions in India across various categories. On the basis of the result, the Ministry will develop the destinations in mission mode, contributing to India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat@2047 .
Vibrant Villages Programme - Launched on 15 th February, 2023

With a financial outlay of ₹4800 crore for the FY 2022-23 to 2025-26, it covers 2,963 selected villages in 19 districts of northern border in the border states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Ladakh, with 662 of them to be covered in the first phase. The objective of the programme is -

· To work on Comprehensive development of these villages to improve the quality of life of people.

· Promotion of tourism and culture by augmentation of various tourism-related infrastructure.

In its first phase, 25 vibrant villages out of a total of 662 villages were taken to promote tourism and development. In addition, One Model Tourism Route comprising 27 vibrant villages of Arunachal Pradesh (Bomdilla-Tawang route) will be developed.

Capacity Building for Service Providers (CBSP) Scheme: Launched in 2018

To provide various short-term skill courses in the field of Hospitality and Tourism for unorganized/organised sectors .

Following skilling, re-skilling and up-skilling programmes are conducted under the CBSP Scheme: -

Destination Based Skill Development
24x7 Multi-Lingual Tourist Info-Helpline is available for domestic and foreign tourists to provide support service in terms of information relating to Travel in India and to offer appropriate guidance to tourists in distress. The toll-free number 1800111363 or on a short code 1363 is available in 12 Languages, including 10 international languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic) , Hindi and English.
E-Tourist Visa (eTV): Launched in 2014 - It was launched to make travel to India trouble-free and unforgettable for foreign tourists. Initially for 43 countries, now extended to 76 nations , with plans to expand to 150 countries to boost foreign tourism.
RCS–UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme- Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) : launched in 2016 . Under RCS, UDAN Ministry of Tourism has collaborated with the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Approximately 519 routes got operationalised under the scheme, including 53 tourism & 48 helicopter routes.
Swadesh Darshan Scheme: Launched in 2014-15 to complement the efforts of respective State Governments/UT Administrations for developing tourism facilities across the country and has sanctioned ₹5287.90 Crore for undertaking 76 projects. Further, Swadesh Darshan scheme was revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0) to develop sustainable and responsible tourism destinations, following a destination & tourism-centric approach. Under the scheme till July 2024, Ministry identified 57 destinations across 32 States/UTs in the country for development including ‘Dholavira’ & ‘Dwarka’ in Gujarat, ‘Bundi (Keshoraipatan) & ‘Jodhpur’ in Rajasthan and ‘Sindhudurg’ & ‘Ajanta-Ellora (District Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar)’ in Maharashtra. A project ‘Spiritual Experience, Keshoraipatan’ amounting Rs.17.37 crore also has been sanctioned in the State of Rajasthan under SD 2.0.
National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) : Launched in 2014-2015. It aims to integrate pilgrimage destinations in a prioritised, planned and sustainable manner to provide a complete religious tourism experience. The growth of domestic tourism hugely depends on pilgrimage tourism. Till December 2023, a total of 46 projects for an amount of Rs.1629.17 Crore have been sanctioned under the PRASHAD Scheme.
Assistance to Central Agencies for Tourism Infrastructure Development Schemes for the development of tourism related infrastructure and facilities to provide an enriching tourism experience to the visitors. Till December 2023, a total of 54 projects for an amount of Rs.780.92 Crore have been sanctioned during the period 2014-15 to 2023-24 (till date) under the Assistance to Central Agencies Scheme.
National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY), a central sector scheme with a total outlay of Rs. 500 Cr. was launched on 21 st January, 2015. It seeks to preserve and rejuvenate the rich cultural heritage of the country. Under the HRIDAY Scheme, funds have been allocated to the 12 cities for the entire Mission period and directly released to the cities.
Domestic Promotion & Publicity including Hospitality (DPPH) Scheme was launched in 2019. Scheme’s main objective is to create a general awareness among the domestic population about the potential tourist destinations in the country. The Ministry through its 20 domestic India Tourism Offices located across the country, undertakes the promotional activities to promote India in a holistic manner which includes promotion of domestic/local tourism by raising awareness about local tourism products which include local religious and non-religious spots for the tourists coming from both outside and within the State.

Travel for LiFE Initiative was launched on 27 th September, 2023 to promote sustainable tourism in the country. Through mindful and deliberate actions mobilized toward tourists and tourism businesses in the consumption of tourism resources, Travel for LiFE aims to promote sustainable tourism in the country.
National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism: Launched on 4th June 2022 it has identified the strategic pillars (shown in the graphic) for development of sustainable tourism.

India's tourism industry is on a promising trajectory, driven by the ambitious target of achieving a USD 3 trillion tourism economy by 2047 as part of the Viksit Bharat@2047 . Despite facing certain challenges along the way, the sector continues to flourish, fueled by various strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing infrastructure, promoting sustainable practices, and enriching the overall visitor experience. With a commitment to overcoming obstacles and leveraging opportunities, India is well on its way to becoming a leading global travel destination.

Every year on 25th January, National Tourism Day is being celebrated across the country with joy and fervor. The National Tourism Day is celebrated emphasizing on a theme designed by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. The object to celebrate National Tourism Day is to create awareness and preserve Indian culture and age old traditions of different parts in India. A diversified state with ample tourism possibilities, it’s majestic history, heritage and pristine nature serves travelers of all age groups and interests. The 974 km of long coast line have good access to relish the charming beach fronts in Andhra Pradesh. Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) 9.24 million, indicating a growth rate of 43.5 percent in comparison to the previous year (2022).
Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEEs) Rs 2,31,927 crore, a substantial increase of 65.74 percent in 2023.
Domestic Tourist Visits (DTVs) India recorded 1,731.01 million domestic tourist visits in 2022, which helped to revitalise the industry after the pandemic.

World Tourism Day 2024: Government Initiatives to Promote Tourism in India

India is all set to become the fifth-largest travel and tourism market worldwide, according to a report by Bernstein.

By 2027, the country is expected to have spent $89 billion on foreign travel, up from $38 billion in 2019.

In an unending effort to do so, the Indian government is actively working to boost the tourism sector through various initiatives and schemes.

Swadesh Darshan Scheme: The Swadesh Darshan Scheme, launched in 2014-15, intends to construct theme-based tourist circuits around India. A total of 73 projects have been completed for a total investment of Rs 5,294.11 crores as of 2023-24.
Swadesh Darshan 2.0: The latest version of this strategy focuses on integrated destination development, identifying 57 locations across 32 states and union territories for targeted development.
E-Visa Facility: The e-visa program allows nationals from around 167 countries to apply online under seven categories, including e-tourist and e-business visas.
PRASHAD Scheme: This initiative aims to improve infrastructure at pilgrimage sites. Under this PRASHAD scheme, aka Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive, a total of 46 projects have been approved so far, with Rs 1,621.13 crore assigned for their development.

Kohima, Sep 27 (PTI) Nagaland Advisor K Tokugha Sukhalu on Friday advocated the need for sustainable tourism practices in the northeastern state, with a particular focus on eco-friendly transportation.

On the occasion of World Tourism Day Sukhalu launched an air-conditioned electric green vehicle as part of the tourists’ facilitation program in Dimapur.

The electric green vehicle is an initiative of Greenland Nagaland.

Speaking on the occasion, Sukhalu emphasised the need for sustainable tourism practices in the state, highlighting how eco-friendly transportation is the need of the hour.

The advisor for food and civil supply, legal metrology and consumer protection commended Greenland Nagaland for its initiative to introduce the electric vehicle, which is expected to attract tourists and encourage green tourism in the state.

Emphasising the importance of environmental consciousness in Nagaland, he urged citizens and organisations to play an active role in preserving the state’s natural beauty.

Sukhalu also mentioned that the state government has formed a committee, chaired by the chief minister, to develop innovative schemes for environmental sustainability.

Greenland Nagaland Secretary, Dr Swaraj Mukherjee asserted that the organisation envisions integrating modern technology into Nagaland’s tourism sector.

Dr Mukherjee claimed that this is Nagaland’s first 14-seater electric bus designed specifically for tourists.

He said that initially, these buses will be reserved for tourists, but indicated that if the government agrees, the buses may be made available for public transportation in the future.

Meanwhile, the Tourism Department Nagaland also celebrated World Tourism Day in Kohima, the state capital.

Nagaland Tourism Association and Nagaland Association of Tour Operators stressed the need to improve basic tourist amenities in the rural areas of the state to attract more tourists from within the country and abroad throughout the year and not just during the Hornbill Festival.
