  • 1904: The original winner was Maurice Garin, however he was found to have caught a train for part of the race and was disqualified.
  • 1996: Bjarne Riis has admitted to the use of doping during the 1996 Tour. The Tour de France organizers have stated they no longer consider him to be the winner, although Union Cycliste Internationale has so far refused to change the official status due to the amount of time passed since his win. Jan Ullrich was placed second.
  • 1999-2005: these races were originally won by Lance armstrong, but in 2012 his wins in the tour de france were removed due to doping violations.
  • 2006: Floyd Landis was the initial winner but subsequently rubbed out due to a failed drug test.
  • 2010: Alberto Contador was the initial winner of the 2010 event, but after a prolonged drug investigation he was stripped of his win in 2012.

Tour de France

Americans on tour: five finishers in paris, the americans in the tour de france peloton rode through mixed fortunes this july, but all five finished the race in paris.

Although a few of them suffered nasty crashes and two were riding the race for the first time in their careers, all five Americans on the Tour de France start list made it through three weeks of racing to finish in Paris.

The American Tour haul in 2018 did not include any GC top 10s, major jerseys, or stage victories. It’s a far cry from the kind of presence American riders had in the Tours of the last two decades. Nonetheless, the veteran Americans in this year’s race each produced gutsy rides following tough crashes, and the rookies delivered solid performances in support roles.

For EF Education First-Drapac’s Lawson Craddock and Taylor Phinney , finishing alone could be seen as a victory. Craddock crashed hard in the very first stage of the race, suffering facial cuts and a broken shoulder blade. It was not initially clear whether he would continue, but he did — all the way to Paris, where he finished as the Tour’s lanterne rouge. He raised around $200,000 for charity along the way.

“It’s pure joy — it’s been an incredibly long three weeks for me,” Craddock said after stage 20, before the largely processional final stage in Paris. “I’m really proud of the work that I did to get to the finish.”

Phinney, too, rode through pain to make it through the last stage of the Tour, after a rough ride in stage 19. The 28-year-old “took a tree to the face” after hitting a bump in the road and losing control of his bike. The crash left him with a broken nose, but that didn’t keep him from crossing the finish line in Paris.

BMC’s Tejay van Garderen also had his fair share of misfortune, having multiple run-ins with the ground in the Tour’s ninth stage to Roubaix. Shortly after team leader Richie Porte crashed out of the race on the asphalt, van Garderen hit the deck once the race had reached the pavé. During a spirited attempt to chase back to the GC group, he crashed yet again. Although he lost time and any hope of slotting into the GC void left by Porte, he came away without serious injury.

He spent multiple days in the ensuing mountain stages up the road in breakaways.

“This Tour de France had its up and downs. Winning the team time trial was certainly the highlight and it put Greg [Van Avermaet] in yellow,” van Garderen said. “We had some aggressive showings but it would have been nice to get another stage win and obviously losing Richie was a big blow to the team. But, I think we can look back on the last three weeks and be happy with what we did.”

Katusha-Alpecin’s Ian Boswell and Sunweb’s Chad Haga, meanwhile, both came to the Tour de France as debutants, both in support roles for GC hopefuls. Across the three weeks, they put in turns for Ilnur Zakarin and Tom Dumoulin, respectively, while also learning the ins and outs of life during the sport’s main event.

Both riders pointed to the scale and popularity of the race as an eye-opener. “Everything is bigger. There’s more media everywhere, there’s much less time to relax,” Haga said.

Boswell agreed.

“There’s times where I was a bit overwhelmed — you get to the hotel late, you’ve committed to different media obligations — but at the same time, it’s part of sport, sharing it with people and friends,” he said. “If anything it keeps me busy and occupied.”

Haga said the stressful racing will be a lasting memory. This Tour saw a few of his compatriots crash hard, and numerous overall contenders — like Porte, Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), and Rigoberto Urán (EF-Drapac) — crash out. Then again, Haga and his Sunweb squad did a commendable job of shepherding team leader Dumoulin through the race, keeping the Dutchman into contention in the final week, where he nabbed a time trial stage win and a spot on the final overall podium.

Boswell was encouraged by his form across the three weeks of racing, which saw him sticking with the GC riders deep into a few of the high-mountain stages.

“Stage 19, I have never really felt that great into a grand tour. It’s been a hard race but I feel like every grand tour I’ve been in I get more experience,” he said. “I think I managed my efforts well over the three weeks.”

With the 21 stages down and none to go, the American representatives in France can finally enjoy at least a little time off the bike. Following the Tour’s Paris finale, the riders will have their first consecutive days away from racing since the opening week of July, which will come as a much-need break for everyone — although perhaps not as long of a break as they deserve. After all, the Tour of Utah is just around the corner for van Garderen, while others will take on this weekend’s Clásica San Sebastián.

As ever, the racing rolls on.

Andrew Hood and Fred Dreier contributed to this report from Paris.

Tour de France 2022: 10 best riders as Jonas Vingegaard misses out on top spot - Blazin’ Saddles

Felix Lowe

Updated 26/07/2022 at 12:42 GMT

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard was a fitting winner of a Tour de France that started in Copenhagen – but was the 25-year-old even the best rider in the race? With the dust now settled on the Champs-Elysees, Felix Lowe takes a look back at an intense three weeks and picks out the best riders of a pulsating 109th edition of the world’s biggest bike race.

Tour de France sees fewest finishers in two decades as 41 abandoned race

COVID-19 takes its toll as 135 riders make the finish line in Paris, the fewest since 2000

As the 2022 Tour de France draws to a close in Paris on Sunday evening, it will do so with the fewest finishers in over two decades as just 135 riders raced into the capital to take on the final kilometres of the race on the Champs-Élysées.

With 41 riders having abandoned the race during the past three weeks, a hefty chunk of the 176 men who started the Copenhagen time trial on July 1 have been forced out for a variety of reasons.

Only four squads – Ineos Grenadiers , Groupama-FDJ, Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériax, and B&B Hotels-KTM – head to Paris with complete eight-rider squads, while at the other end of the scale AG2R Citroën, Israel-Premier Tech, and UAE Team Emirates limp home with three, three and four riders, respectively.

The attrition had begun before the race even got under way as five riders were forced out of participating due to COVID-19-related reasons. Tim Declercq (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) were late scratches while Israel-Premier Tech had to make two line-up changes due to close contacts.

Michael Woods latest abandon from Tour de France with positive COVID-19 test Blow to Pogacar as Majka leaves the Tour de France before stage 17 Chris Froome out of Tour de France with COVID-19 O'Connor out of the Tour de France with torn glute

For the first four days of the race through Denmark, the long transfer south, and the opening stage in the north of France, there were, unusually, no abandons at all. However, the cobbled stage to Arenberg brought with it the first DNFs as Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) and Daniel Oss (TotalEnergies) left the race following crashes.

The morning of stage 8 brought with it news of the first riders to leave having tested positive for COVID-19 as Vegard Stake Laengen (UAE Team Emirates) and Geoffrey Bouchard (AG2R Citroën) abandoned following internal team testing. Gianni Moscon (Astana Qazaqstan) also left after suffering from long-COVID.

By the rest day following stage 9 in the Alps, a total of 13 riders had gone home, including Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroën) who had fought through the previous stage with a torn glute muscle, and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), another COVID-19 positive.

On stage 10, UAE was down another rider as key domestique George Bennett tested positive, while a week later Rafał Majka became the fourth and final rider from the team to leave the race after suffering a knee injury on stage 16.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) was a DNF on stage 11, having been out of sorts for much of the race, while former Jumbo-Visma co-leader Primož Roglič left on stage 15 to concentrate on recovering from injuries sustained in earlier crashes.

The same stage saw Michael Mørkøv (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) battle valiantly alone through the intense heat for 200km before missing the time cut. In the latter stages of the race, more COVID-19 cases struck, with those of Michael Woods, Chris Froome (Israel-Premier Tech), and Enric Mas (Movistar) the last of the 17 positive tests during the Tour.

The final stage into Paris brought three final abandons, as Israel-Premier Tech saw Woods (COVID-19) and Guillaume Boivin (illness) leave, while Movistar's Gorka Izagirre flew home in order to take part in his hometown race of the Ordiziako Klasika on Monday.

It's the first time since the 2000 Tour when so few riders have made it to Paris. That attritional edition saw just 127 men complete the race.

The record for the lowest number of finishers at a Tour de France, though, remains the surely unbeatable 10 that made it through the 1919 race, which was also the slowest Tour ever, running at a speed of just 24.056 kph.

Here’s Where the American Riders in the 2023 Tour de France Stand After the First Week of Racing

On the Tour’s first rest day, a recap of where all of the American riders rank after one week of racing.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 2

It's been a banner year for the Yanks, mainly due to the fact that Powless has spent much of the first week in the polka dot jersey . But it’s also impossible to ignore the work of Sepp Kuss , who has been arguably the most important domestique in this year’s Tour (of course, you have to factor in Mathieu van der Poel’s stunning work as a leadout man for Jasper Philipsen).

And so here, on the 2023 Tour de France’s first rest day, is a State of the Union, a recap of where all of the American Tour riders sit after one week of racing.

Neilsen Powless

The 26-year-old Californian and a tribal member of the Oneida Nation, took the polka dots on the race’s opening stage . Other than one stage in which he was back in his EF Education-EasyPost’s traditional pink jersey, he’s been the King of the Mountains ever since. Through one week of racing, he has forty-six total points in the KoM competition, eighteen ahead of AG2R Citröen’s Felix Gall and twenty clear of Uno-X’s Tobias Johannessen.

Though he hasn’t dominated many major climbs (he was sixth on both the Tourmalet and Puy de Dôme) Powless’s points lead has a lot to do with the fact that he’s trying to nick points everywhere he can. But that nickel-and-dime strategy might only take Powless so far. He’ll likely need to win at least one HC climb if he wants to hang on to the polka dots until Paris.

Durango, Colorado’s Sepp Kuss is one of the Tour’s most elite climbers, which is why you see him in every mountain stage, carving a path for his teammate Jonas Vingegaard and pulling his leader as far up the hill as he is able or ordered.

Despite the fact that he’s racing in service of Vinegegaard (or perhaps because of it), Kuss is currently ninth in the overall standings, six-minutes-and-forty-five-seconds behind his race-leading teammate. So long as Vingegaard is in the fight for the yellow jersey , an overall top-ten is a very real proposition for Kuss.

Matteo Jorgenson

Regardless of how devastating it was to watch California’s Matteo Jorgenson get caught with just a few hundred meters to the top of the Puy de Dôme , it was thrilling to watch him take such a big a shot at winning yesterday’s stage. It was also reminiscent of last year’s summit finish at Megève, where he came within ten seconds of winning his first Grand Tour stage.

The breakaway specialist-slash-climber is currently fortieth in the overall standings and has netted twelve KoM points, which is good for fifteenth in the race for the polka dots.

As his Movistar is a team without a leader—Enric Mas was forced to abandon on the Tour’s very first stage with a fractured scapula—and as the mountains continue to pitch up over the next two weeks, watch for more attacks from the ever-aggressive Jorgenson. Hopefully, he’ll have just a bit more in the tank next time.

Kevin Vermaerke

After a 2022 rookie season which Kevin Vermaerke described as “a year with ups and downs,” the California native came into this year’s Tour hoping to build on those ups.

He’s already made it further than he did last year, when the DSM-Firmenich rider crashed out on Stage 8 , suffering a broken collarbone in a high-speed wreck.

Though he’s currently ninety-sixth in the overall standings, continuing to learn is no doubt a large goal of Vermaerke’s Tour de France, as he is, at 22-year-old, the third youngest rider in the race.

Vermaerke recently told Velo that the proof is in his output of late, saying, “I physically took a step up (from last season). I can see that in my numbers. It hasn’t translated into a result quite yet but I’ve been close. I’m hoping I can create an opportunity here in the Tour and take a win on the biggest stage.”

Lawson Craddock

At 31-years-old, Houston’s Lawson Craddock is the elder statesman of this year’s crop of Yankees. However, despite his age, this is only his third appearance in the Tour de France; his first since 2018.

So far this year, he’s played an essential role for Jayco-AlUla’s team leader Simon Yates, helping the Aussie to a place on the GC podium in each of the Tour’s first four stages. After the first week, Yates sits in sixth place overall, thanks in large part to the role of Craddock, who is one of his main lieutenants.

Currently in eighty-third place in the general classification, Craddock will continue to play the role of domestique for Yates, hoping to get his American-backed team on the podium in Paris.

Quinn Simmons

American national champion Quinn Simmons crashed hard on Stage 5 . He valiantly suffered through the following few days but eventually abandoned before the start of Sunday’s ninth stage.

The Durango native was in France to support his Lidl-Trek teammates Giulio Ciccone and Mattias Skjelmose, however he still had his eyes trained on his own stage win.
