Pooltips voor de Tour de France 2023 in WielerFlits Ploegleider

Video Daar zijn ze weer! Vijf kakelverse pooltips om je op weg te helpen met jouw wielerpool. WielerFlits geeft opnieuw een aantal tips voor jouw team voor de Tour de France . Fred Wright – 5 europunten

De verslagenheid binnen Bahrain Victorious is groot na het overlijden van Gino Mäder . Toch zie je vaak dat ploeggenoten moed en extra motivatie uit zo’n triest moment halen. Wat dat betreft kun je maar beter rekening met Fred Wright houden. Een zeer sterke allrounder die daardoor ook altijd goed meekomt in de voorjaarsklassiekers. Maar ook in de grote rondes is hij altijd een smaakmaker.

Vorig jaar was hij nog dichtbij een ritzege in Saint-Etienne vanuit de vroege vlucht. Maar ook in de Vuelta a España die hij daarna reed, maakte hij indruk. Waar hij in de Tour twee keer mee zat met de beslissende vlucht, lukte dat in Spanje zelfs drie keer. Door een tweede plaats, twee derde plaatsten en twee vierde plaatsen werd hij ook tweede in het puntenklassement. Onlangs kroonde hij zich tot Brits kampioen.

Ruben Guerreiro – 4 europunten

Het bergklassement is vaak een van de moeilijkst voorspelbare klassementen in een grote ronde. Vaak is het een goede klimmer die niet (meer) in aanmerking komt voor een top 10-notering óf het is een renner die er een concreet doel van maakt. Vorig jaar wilde Ruben Guerreiro dat doen, maar een val in al de tweede etappe voorkwam dat. Dit jaar koerst de Portugees voor Movistar en die ploeg heeft met Enric Mas een kandidaat voor het podium.

Na een sterk voorjaar heeft de Spanjaard het nu lastig en wellicht opent dat kansen voor andere renners. Guerreiro won al eens de bergtrui in de Giro d’Italia, werd tweede in die van de Vuelta en vijfde in de Tour.  Hij toonde dit jaar zijn goede  klimmersbenen met de eindzege in de Saudi Tour en een derde plaats in O Gran Camiño.

Jordi Meeus – 3 europunten

Goedkoop is niet altijd duurkoop. We denken spontaan terug aan de Giro, waar Jonathan Milan slechts drie europuntjes was en wel een van de beste presterende renners in het WielerFlits Ploegleider-spel bleek te zijn. Dat zou in de Tour ook zo maar kunnen gebeuren. Een van de goedkoopste sprintkopmannen van het spel, is dit keer Jordi Meeus .

Tijdens de start in Bilbao viert de Belg zijn 25ste verjaardag. Hij rijdt voor BORA-hansgrohe, waar hij de voorkeur krijgt op de vertrekkende Sam Bennett . Meeus is een sterke sprinter die op goede dagen met de besten kan meedoen om de zege. Wat in zijn voordeel spreekt is dat hij nu mag samenwerken met Danny van Poppel , een van de beste lead outs in de wereld.  Dat zou weleens kunnen uitgroeien tot een aartsgevaarlijk duo.

Dylan van Baarle – 2 europunten

Eerlijk is eerlijk, de keuzes voor de renners van twee punten zijn best beperkt, op de renners van Uno-X na. Opvallend genoeg zitten er ook een aantal renners van Jumbo-Visma tussen, waaronder Dylan van Baarle . De Nederlandse ploeg is titelverdediger in de persoon van Jonas Vingegaard en hij gaat dan ook opnieuw vol voor eindwinst.

Aangezien Jumbo-Visma nogal eens het dagklassement kan winnen, krijgen alle renners van de ploeg daarvoor bonuspunten. Dat kan een mooi voordeeltje opleveren met een goedkope renner. Daarnaast moet je altijd rekening houden met een tegenvaller. In dat geval zijn alle renners van Jumbo-Visma in topvorm en kan de ex-winnaar van Parijs-Roubaix zijn felbegeerde ritzege in de Tour najagen.

Cees Bol – 1 europunt

De komende Tour de France kan een historische blijken te zijn. Sprintlegende Mark Cavendish gaat op zoek naar een 35ste etappezege, wat hem alleen recordhouder zou maken. Nu deelt hij die mijlpaal van 34 overwinningen nog met de beste wielrenner allertijden, Eddy Merckx. Bij zijn laatste Tourdeelname won de 38-jarige Brit liefst vier etappes. Toen was dat bij Quick-Step, dat over een van de beste sprinttreinen ter wereld beschikt.

Nu is dat bij Astana Qazaqstan, waar Cees Bol zijn lead out is. De 27-jarige Noord-Hollander is zelf echter ook snel en haalde in al zijn drie vorige deelnemers een of meerdere top 10-noteringen. In 2020 was hij nog akelig dichtbij een ritzege, toen alleen Wout van Aert sneller was in Privas. Ook dit seizoen verzamelde Bol al de nodige ereplaatsen.

Tour de France poule tips

De Tour de France wordt binnenkort weer gefietst, dus wordt het weer tijd om poule tips te geven voor de Tour de France. Omdat iedere Tour de France poule verschillende regels en puntentelling heeft is het lastig om een eenduidig advies te geven. Daarom geven we per categorie de namen van een aantal renners welke volgens ons hoge ogen zullen gooien tijdens de Tour de France van 2024. Bij het samenstellen van deze lijst hebben we onder meer gekeken naar prestaties van de renners tijdens de vorige Tour de France, maar vooral naar de vorm van deze renners in onder meer de reeds gereden rondes en klassiekers. De categorieën van deze Tour de France poule tips zijn Klassementsrenners (Gele trui), Klimmers (Bolletjes trui), Sprinters (Groene trui), Tijdrijders en jongeren (Witte trui). Daarnaast hebben we een aantal gevaarlijke outsiders geselecteerd welke dit jaar weleens zouden kunnen verrassen.

Belangrijk is om per poule goed te kijken naar de puntentelling. Zo is het bij sommige poules mogelijk om acht renners in verschillende categorieën te selecteren, bijvoorbeeld klimmers, sprinters, etc., maar leveren de renners uit de categorie klimmers ook punten op als ze hoger komen in het eindklassement. Bij andere Tour de France poules krijg je juist weer enkel punten als de renner in zijn eigen categorie punten weet te verwerven. Bij die eerste puntentelling kun je dus het beste af en toe kiezen voor een ‘allrounder’ die op meerdere vlakken punten zal scoren, terwijl je bij de tweede puntentelling per categorie voor een echte specialist moet kiezen.

Favorieten eindklassement

Wat ons betreft kan het niet anders dan dat het een tweestrijd wordt tussen Jonas Vingegaard, winnaar van de Tour de France vorig jaar, en Tadej Pogacar. Met name de Sloveen Pogacar heeft een geweldig voorseizoen achter de rug en is wat ons betreft dan ook de grote favoriet voor de eindoverwinning.

Met Jai Hindley doet ook de Giro winnaar van vorig jaar mee en we mogen hem dan ook beschouwen als één van de concurrenten. Qua parcours verwachten we ook veel van Richard Carapaz. Met slechts één tijdrit hoeft hij minder tijd te compenseren in de bergritten.

Wat ons betreft zijn dit de favorieten voor het eindklassement van de Tour de France 2024:

Outsiders Tour de France 2024

Vorig jaar waren er in het klassement weinig verrassingen qua namen. Er was niet één renner die ineens een top 10 klassering had. Toch waren er ook in een aantal Tour Poules een aantal renners die niet iedereen had en waar je wel het verschil mee kon maken. We noemen dit een outsider of darkhorse, een renner die kan verrassen in een Tour de France en goede zaken kan doen in je Tour poule.

Klimmers – Favorieten bolletjes trui

De topfavorieten onder de klimmers zijn Pogacar, Roglic en Jonas Vingegard. Het blijft afhankelijk van het verloop van de Tour de France of een klassementsfavoriet met goede klimmersbenen al in het begin veel tijd verliest en zich daardoor wellicht zal moeten richten op het bergklassement en daar van de klassementsrijders ook de ruimte voor krijgt of dat in de laatste weken bij de grote cols de punten door de klassementsrijders alsnog worden opgestreken en daar een winnaar van de bolletjestrui uit voortkomt.

Sprinters – Favorieten voor de groene trui

Sam Bennet won vorig jaar verrassend de Groene Trui, in 2024 gaat Bennet echter niet mee om zijn titel te verdedigen vanwege een knieblessure. Omdat bij de meeste poules rit overwinningen zwaar meewegen in het eindresultaat, is het aan te raden om een aantal sprinters in je team op te nemen. Sprinters die mee kunnen over heuvels of niet al te zware cols kunnen ook vaak in aanvallende etappes punten voor je pakken en strijden vaak mee om de Groene trui.

Jongerenklassement

Het jongerenklassement oftewel de Witte trui gaat tussen de renners die jonger zijn dan 25 jaar. Vorig jaar werd deze trui gewonnen door Tadej Pogacar, tevens winnaar van de Gele Trui. Ook dit jaar is Tadej Pogacar nog onder de vijfentwintig jaar en daarom favoriet voor het jongerenklassement. De renners die dit jaar bij je Tour de France poule zijn aan te raden zijn:.

Tijdrijders

Kijk goed naar de puntentelling van de Tour de France poule waar je mee speelt. Krijgen je tijdrijders enkel punten voor de tijdrit, dan kun je onderstaand lijstje het beste gebruiken. Krijgen ze ook punten voor het eindklassement, puntenklassement en het klimklassement, dan is het beter om een renner te nemen die ook bij deze klassementen punten zal gaan scoren. Of de tijdrijder moet erg goedkoop zijn, want dan is het een zekerheid voor minimaal één top 5 notering. Bedenk wel dat er in 2024 maar één (klim)tijdrit in de Tour de France gepland staat, dus veel tijdritpunten ga je niet verdienen voor je poule.

Welke renners scoorden vorige jaar de meeste punten bij Scorito tijdens de Tour de France?

Resultaten uit het verleden bieden geen garantie voor de toekomst, maar als we kijken naar de populaire Scorito poule, dan zijn er een aantal renners die vorig jaar erg veel punten scoorden. Allereerst natuurlijk de uiteindelijke winnaar Vingegard, hij scoorde de meeste punten.

Let wel op, want je krijgt bij Scorito enkel punten als je de renner ook opstelt. Bij massasprint etappes en zware bergetappes is dit vaak een eenvoudige keuze, maar bij heuveletappes is het vaak lastiger om de aanvallers te raden en/of te gokken op een massasprint. Het komt dus regelmatig voor dat je aanvaller al twee weken niks laat zien en dan ineens een etappe wint als jij hem niet meer hebt opgesteld. Wat dat betreft zijn sprinters en klassementsrenners veiligere keuzes voor het behalen van punten, maar daar hangt uiteraard ook een evenredig prijskaartje aan.

Aan het einde van de Tour de France krijg je wel over al je renners extra punten voor klassement en teamuitslagen, dus niet enkel over je opgestelde renners in de laatste etappe naar Parijs.

AG2R - Citroën Team

Ben O’Connor (2M) - Scherp geprijsd en daarom een prima optie. Maar de Australiër stelt ook weleens teleur, zoals in de vorige Tour. Ook toen werd hij 3e in de Dauphiné, maar viel hij uit. In de Vuelta behaalde hij vervolgens een 8e plek. Kan O’Connor z’n 4e plek in de Tour van 2021 evenaren? Als alles meezit wel. Felix Gall (750K) - De 25-jarige klimgeit uit Oostenrijk is bezig aan een topseizoen, waarin hij recent nog indruk maakte in de Ronde van Zwitserland (ritwinst en goed klassement). Maar neem je de man die vorig jaar ongelooflijk teleurstelde in de Giro, terwijl hij daarvoor zo goed reed? Voor 750K kun je het risico wel lopen.

Alpecin - Deceuninck

Jasper Philipsen (4,5M) - De 25-jarige Belg is momenteel de beste sprinter van de wereld. Won al 6 keer dit seizoen en liet zijn veelzijdigheid zien met een 2e plek in Parijs-Roubiax. In de Elfstedenronde Brugge en de Baloise Belgium Tour klopte hij onder meer Fabio Jakobsen overtuigend, al lag hij daar wel op het asfalt. Scoorde de afgelopen 2 jaar veel punten in de Tour, maar zijn prijskaartje is ook erg fors. Durf jij ‘m thuis te laten? Mathieu van der Poel (3,5M) - Emotioneel is Van der Poel een must. Maar rationeel kan het best een slimme zet zijn om ‘m buiten je ploeg te laten. Hij moet de kansen delen met Philipsen en zal best z’n huzarenstukjes opvoeren. Alleen gaat-ie 350 punten scoren? Wat voor hem spreekt: hij is dit seizoen in absolute bloedvorm (en het is wel lekker kijken als hij in je ploeg zit). Soren Kragh Andersen (1M) - Kan in de schaduw z’n ritjes uitkiezen. Etappewinst absoluut mogelijk. Quinten Hermans (750K) - Zie Kragh Andersen.

Astana - Qazaqstan Team

Alexey Lutsenko (1,5M) - Op eindwinst in de Ronde van Sicilië na is het niet veel soeps met de Kazach dit seizoen. Hij gaf ziek op in zijn laatste koersen (Romandië en de Ronde van Zwitserland). Toch stond Lutsenko er wel in de Tours van 2021 (7e) en 2022 (8e) en ook voor die edities presteerde hij wisselvallig. Mark Cavendish (1,5M) - Pakt de Manx Missile het etappe-record van Eddy Merckx? Het zou zomaar kunnen met deze geslepen 38-jarige Brit. Maar met de vele topsprinters zal het behoorlijk lastig worden om structureel bij de eersten te sprinten.

Bahrein - Victorious 

Mikel Landa (2,5M) - Landa stelde teleur met een 22ste plek in de Dauphiné, maar de 33-jarige Spanjaard rijdt verder een topseizoen. De afgelopen seizoenen ontliep Landa de Tour, na z’n 4e plek in 2020. Voor 2,5M een interessante, onderscheidende keuze. Fred Wright (1,5M) - Leuke allround renner, die vooral een slimme keuze is als hij zich in de sprints gaat mengen. Zijn voorjaar viel helaas tegen, maar in de Dauphiné liet Wright beterschap zien. Hou de interviews in de gaten! Pello Bilbao (1,5M) - De ideale schaduwkopman achter Landa. Goede punch, sprint vaak mee om de ereplaatsen, kan tijdrijden en de start in het Baskenland zal ‘m inspireren. Matej Mohoric (750K) - De Sloveen is het hele jaar al stabiel goed, won een rit in de Ronde van Slovenië en werd daar 2e in het eindklassement. Altijd gevaarlijk voor ritwinst, zoals in de Tour van 2021 (2 etappezeges). Phil Bauhaus (2M) - Sprint best aardig dit jaar. Beste keuze voor 2 miljoen. 

BORA - Hansgrohe

Jai Hindley (3,5M) - Hindley leek heel even een eendagsvlieg, na zijn onverwachte 2e plek in de Giro van ‘20. Het jaar 2021 was niet veel voor hem, maar 2022 was het jaar van de bevestiging. Hij won de Giro en werd 10e in de Vuelta. En ook dit seizoen trekt de Australiër deze lijn door, met keurige uitslagen in meerdaagse wedstrijden als de Ronde van Catalonië (8e) en de Dauphiné (4e). Staat op 27-jarige leeftijd voor zijn Tour-debuut. Emanuel Buchmann (1,5M) - De voormalig nummer 4 van de Tour (‘19) kent een matig seizoen. Jordi Meeus (1,5M) - Met zo'n lead-out moet je wel heel matig zijn als je geen ereplaatsen pakt. Danny van Poppel (750K) - Lead-out van Meeus die op een zwaarder parcours kan stunten.

Bryan Coquard (1,5M) - Puntjesprokkelaar in de sprint. Zal om en nabij de 150 punten halen. Guillaume Martin (1M) - Of de 30-jarige thuisrijder voor het klassement gaat of niet; die 100 punten gaat-ie echt wel halen. Zijn vorm is prima, gezien de 6e plek in de Dauphiné. Axel Zingle (750K) - Zingle beleeft een uitstekend seizoen en sprint altijd voor ereplaatsen. En daar houden we van. Zal wel zijn kansen moeten delen met Coquard. Ion Izagirre (500K) - Kopman Izagirre stelt vaak teleur in een grote ronde, maar voor 500K is hij dan wel weer een prima optie.

EF Education-EasyPost

Richard Carapaz (3,5M) - Carapaz is een garantie voor punten, zelfs als hij tegenvalt als klassementsrenner. Maar gaat hij 350 punten scoren? Zijn 36ste stek in de Dauphiné vergroot de twijfel. Neilson Powless (1M) - De 26-jarige Amerikaan rijdt een fantastisch seizoen met een zeer stabiel voorjaar. In Zwitserland hervatte hij, maar dat viel lichtjes tegen. Als Carapaz snel wegvalt uit het klassement, vergroot dat de kansen voor Powless op punten. Rigoberto Uran (1M) - De 36-jarige strijder viel uit in de Giro en mikt nu op de Tour. Zijn 6e plek in Zwitserland liet zien dat hij op koers is voor wederom een goede Ronde van Frankrijk. Magnus Cort (750K) - Cort kiest zijn ritjes uit en voor 750K heb je een prima rittenkaper in je team.

Groupama-FDJ

David Gaudu (3M) - Wat was er met Gaudu in de Dauphiné? Hij reed zwaar onder zijn niveau en dat terwijl hij zich in Parijs-Nice nog kon meten met Jonas Vingegaard. Toch moet je de Fransman niet te vroeg afschrijven, want zowel in 2019 als 2022 reed Gaudu een matige Dauphiné en een prima Tour. Thibaut Pinot (1,5M) - De afscheidstournee van Pinot door Frankrijk. Maar wat kan hij nog na zijn sterke Giro, waarin hij de bergtrui won en 5e werd in het eindklassement? Een klassement lijkt ons sterk, maar een ritzege zou moeten kunnen. Wel aan de prijs. Valentin Madouas (1M) - Wanneer pakt deze kroonprins van het Franse wielrennen echt door? Vaak in de schaduw, wat ook nu weer het geval lijkt. Toch durven we een gewaagde voorspelling aan: Madouas wint een rit! Stefan Küng (500K) - Met slechts één tijdrit is Küng niet echt interessant. Zelfs niet voor 500K.

INEOS Grenadies

Thomas Pidcock (2,5M) - Pidcock rijdt dit seizoen weer in de rondte zoals we hem kennen; totaal onberekenbaar. De 23-jarige alleskunner wisselt grootse overwinningen op de racefiets of mountainbike af met schaamteloze off-days. Zijn generale in Zwitserland was weer nietszeggend (22ste), dus reken maar dat hij er staat in Frankrijk. Daniel Martinez (2,5M) - Tot nu toe zijn de Tour en Daniel Martinez geen goede combi. En zijn seizoen tot nu toe geeft weinig reden om daar een verandering in te verwachten. Egan Bernal (2M) - Bernal krabbelt langzaam op na zijn zware val in de Ronde van Catalonië. Of hij naar de Tour gaat is nog maar de vraag. Zijn 12e plek in de Dauphiné was zeker niet slecht, maar ook niet Bernal-waardig. We adviseren ‘m: alle ballen op de Vuelta. Carlos Rodriguez (2M) - Stiekem de meest interessante INEOS-man, als je het ons vraagt. Hij debuteerde met een 7e plek in de Vuelta vorig jaar en reed ondanks een val naar de 9e plek in de Dauphiné. Doet bovendien mee voor wit.

Intermarché - Circus - Wanty

Biniam Girmay (2,5M) – BINI! Na de TTT (Traditionele Talenten Terugslag) lijkt Girmay zijn benen weer gevonden te hebben. Leverde een machtige sprint af in Zwitserland en legde Van Aert en Démare erop. Maar het moet gezegd: heel best is het verder nog niet dit jaar.. Maakt één zwaluw zomer of zijn er nog twijfels over de vorm van deze parel? Zou in staat moeten zijn om langer mee te gaan dan de pure sprinters en krijgt daardoor allicht iets meer kansen om te sprinten. 2,5M is een flinke investering, maar kan een hoge ROI bieden: up to you! Louis Meintjes (1,0M) – Traditioneel in de race voor de befaamde Zubeldia-award, maar toch scoort Meintjes de laatste jaren steevast meer dan 150 punten in de grote rondes. Met een prijs van 1,0M is Meintjes daarmee op het eerste gezicht een redelijk risicoloze investering. Met een 7e plaats in de Dauphiné liet Meintjes zien dat hij precies staat waar je hem verwacht, al was het restant van 2023 niet heel denderend. Leuk ter opvulling van jouw bak GC-renners, maar weinig sprankelende keuze.

Israel - Premier Tech

Michael Woods (750K) – Sympathieke Canadees die in de Route d’Occitanie heeft laten zien dat het met de vorm wel goed zit. Net als in 2022, wist Woods deze ronde ook dit jaar met winst af te sluiten. Vorig jaar volgde hierop (mede door een vervelende val) een matige Tour. Dit jaar zou het weleens beter kunnen gaan met Woods, die ongetwijfeld de aanval zal zoeken in lastige ritten en misschien ook nog eens op zoek zal gaan naar de bergtrui. Leuke opvulling, net als Dylan Teuns (750K) overigens! Corbin Strong (1M) - Wat prijzig voor de rappe man, die ook een heuvel over kan. Wel mogelijke opvuller als 7e sprinter.

Lidl - Trek

Mads Pedersen (4,0M) – Mighty Mads heeft ook een Mighty Value: 4,0M is een serieus hoge prijs voor deze Deense krachtpatser. Rijdt tot nu toe een dijk van een jaar en gaat absoluut punten opleveren, maar of dit er ook 400 zijn is wel zeer de vraag. Heeft veel gereden en naar zijn vorm is het op dit moment vissen, een risicovolle investering als je het ons vraagt. Giulio Ciccone (2,0M) – Giulio richt zich op ritzeges en de bolletjestrui en dat is voor de Scorito-spelers een heel fijne keuze. Er zijn nog weinig renners die echt hebben uitgesproken voor het bergklassement te gaan en, getuige zijn optreden in de Dauphiné, is Ciccone zeer kansrijk voor dit klassement. Hoewel de bolletjestrui de laatste 3 jaar door de winnaar van het eindklassement is opgeëist, is 2,0M is een prima investering in deze Italiaan. Zal zijn bril weer gaan vliegen? Mattias Skjelmose Jensen (1,5M) – Een Deen en de gele trui, het lijkt de laatste jaren een steeds vaker voorkomende combinatie te worden. De talentvolle Skjelmose zette deze traditie voort door in de Ronde van Zwitserland Ayuso en Evenepoel van zich af te houden, een zeer knappe prestatie. Reed ook 3x top-10 in de Waalse klassiekers en strijdt ook mee voor de jongerentrui, voor 1,5M zou dit voor velen weleens een ‘easy pick’ kunnen worden.

Lotto Dstny

Caleb Ewan (2,0M) – Het valt allemaal wat tegen bij Caleb Ewan de laatste tijd. Hij zou zijn topjaren moeten beleven, maar het tegendeel is helaas waar. Hij lijkt niet meer de acrobaat te zijn die zich altijd naar voren in de sprints weet te bewegen en de connectie met zijn lead-out is ook niet wat het geweest is. Maar goed, 2,0M is ook weer geen onoverkomelijke prijs voor Ewan, want als hij zijn snelle benen weer weet te vinden kan hij opeens weer uit je rug opduiken... Maxim van Gils (500K) – Leuke, jonge renner die je als aanvaller met een rappe finish aan het team zou kunnen toevoegen. Wist vorig jaar al eens de Saudi Tour de winnen en reed in 2023 een sterk Waals voorjaar en aantal mooie ereplaatsen bij elkaar. Begon zeer sterk aan de Dauphiné, maar moest helaas wel ziek opgeven in deze Franse koers. Als hij weer fit is, kan hij mooie dingen laten zien in de Belgische ploeg van vrijbuiters!

Movistar Team

Enric Mas (3,5M) – In de Vuelta zou het een no-brainer zijn, Enric Mas voor 3,5M: altijd doen! Maar dit is de Tour en het huwelijk tussen Mas en de Tour is niet altijd even robuust gebleken. Daarnaast was zijn Dauphiné matig en is het de vraag hoe het met de vorm is. Maar toch, Mas is een getalenteerd ronderenner die in staat moet worden geacht om mee te doen in de strijd om het podium. Hij zal niet vaak gekozen worden, maar kan daarom wel jouw onderscheidende renner zijn! Matteo Jorgenson (1,0M) – Eén van de revelaties van dit wielerjaar en slechts 1,0M: een koopje! Won de Ronde van Oman, reed top-10 in Parijs-Nice en Romandië en was goed in het voorjaar. Komt in aanmerking voor het jongerenklassement en heeft aangetoond een zeer veelzijdig renner te zijn. Wel gevallen in de Dauphiné, dus even in de gaten houden hoe het met de fysieke gesteldheid van Matteo is. Alex Aranburu (750K) - Áls Aranburu zich gaat mengen in de massasprints, is hij de meest aantrekkelijk geprijsde sprinter. Maar in dit sprintgeweld is dat zeer de vraag. Wellicht krijgt deze Bask wel extra motivatie van de Tourstart in eigen regio.

Soudal – Quick Step

Fabio Jakobsen (3,0M) – Der Fabio heeft een moeilijk jaar achter de rug, maar liet in de Baloise Belgium Tour zien dat hij zijn snelle benen weer gevonden heeft. Mogelijk heeft zijn Tourselectie en het einde van ‘de strijd’ met Merlier zijn gemoed goed gedaan. Is met 3,0M natuurlijk wel aan de prijs, maar op papier wel een garantie voor een stevig aantal punten. Julian Alaphilippe (2,5M) – Ook voor Alaphilippe was het laatste jaar niet bepaald makkelijk te noemen. Lange tijd was het de vraag in hoeverre hij zijn vorm ooit nog terug zou vinden na zijn zware valpartij in LBL 2022. Toch was zijn optreden in de Dauphiné zeer bemoedigend en daarmee lijkt heel Frankrijk het vertrouwen in hun held weer terug te hebben. Wij geloven er ook wel weer in en 2,5M is voor iemand met de kwaliteiten van Alaphilippe en gezien het diverse parcours best acceptabel.

Team Arkéa - Samsic

Warren Barguil (750K) – “In het land der blinden is éénoog koning”. De selectie van Arkéa is niet bepaald om van te watertanden, en dan springt de immer aanvalslustige Barguil er natuurlijk alweer snel uit. Reken niet op hem voor het klassement, maar als je nog een plaatsje over hebt voor een aanvaller die met een schuin oog naar de bollen kijkt en als je van een gokje houdt, dan is Barguil ‘votre homme’. Luca Mozzato (1M) - Sprinter van dienst. Dit jaar nog matig, maar vorig jaar pakte hij best wat ereplaatsen in de Tour.

Romain Bardet (2,5M) – Absolute kopman voor Team DSM, die prima (misschien net te hoog) geprijsd is voor een subtopper in het klassement. Heeft in Zwitserland laten zien dat hij goed in orde aan het raken is voor de ronde in zijn thuisland en is normaliter een garantie voor minimaal 200 punten. Bijkomend voordeel is dat er slechts één (heuvelachtige) tijdrit in het parcours is opgenomen, waardoor een top-5 voor Bardet binnen de mogelijkheden lijkt te liggen. Sam Welsford (2,0M) – Vooruitgeschoven man voor Team DSM in de massasprints, die zijn debuut zal maken in een grote ronde. Heeft dit jaar al wel wat grote namen erop gelegd, maar niet in de grote koersen. Eindigde paar keer kort in de ZLM Tour, maar was afwezig in de sprints in de Baloise Belgium Tour (al was zijn ITT wel goed). Is wat aan de prijs gezien zijn beperkte ervaring, maar met zijn verleden op de baan zit het doorgaans met de snelheid wel goed.

Team Jayco AlUla

Dylan Groenewegen (2,5M) – Amsterdamse lefgozer die uitgespeeld wordt in de massasprints. Liet sprintvorm zien in Slovenië, maar ook kwetsbaarheid in de heuvels in de Dauphiné. Gaat sowieso een paar keer kort eindigen en mogelijk ook een keer winnen, maar groene trui ligt niet binnen mogelijkheden en het is de vraag hoe vaak hij überhaupt aan sprinten toe zal komen. Daarmee is 2,5M pittig, maar kan wel een onderscheidende keuze zijn. Simon Yates (2,0M) – Eén grote ‘black box’ voor de Tour de France is Simon Yates. Normaal gesproken is hij al wispelturig in zijn uitslagen, maar dit jaar is hij al sinds zijn DNF in Romandië niet meer in wedstrijdverband actief geweest. Het blijft gissen naar de vorm en doelstellingen van Yates (klassement of etappes/bergtrui) en dat maakt een selectie voor hem op dit moment wel een gok. Afschrijven doen we hem echter niet, daar zijn de intrinsieke kwaliteiten en palmares te groot voor.

Team Jumbo-Visma

Jonas Vingegaard (5,5M) – Wat een klasbakken staan er weer opgesteld bij de bijen. Met nummer één, de winnaar van vorig jaar: Jonas Vingegaard. Absolute must-have voor in je team, uitstekend in vorm en een garantie voor een onmisbare sloot aan punten. Wout van Aert (5,0M) – Normaliter ook een absolute must-have, ware het niet dat er (bewust of onbewust) nogal een rookgordijn wordt opgetrokken rondom de plannen van onze Wout. Gaat hij voor groen? Haalt hij Parijs? Sprint hij mee in de massasprints? Genoeg vraagtekens, maar eigenlijk is het toch te bizar voor woorden om überhaupt te twijfelen over deze alleskunner?! Moet nog wel een paar procentjes bij zijn vorm doen, maar daar hebben we alle vertrouwen in. Christophe Laporte (3,5M) – Weer iemand die goed op dreef is, getuige zijn successen in de Dauphiné. Toch is het prijskaartje van 3,5M erg hoog voor iemand die waarschijnlijk weinig voor eigen kansen zal mogen rijden. Enkel voor de teampunten zijn er andere alternatieven ( Benoot (1,5M) / Van Hooydonck (1,0M) / Van Baarle (1,0M)), dus goed in de gaten houden in hoeverre Laporte ook zelf zijn kans mag gaan in de sprints. Sepp Kuss (2,5M) / Wilco Kelderman (2,0M) – De knechten in het (hoog)gebergte, die zelf ook in staat moeten zijn om mooie uitslagen te rijden en sowieso teampunten kunnen scoren. Naar het vormpeil van Kuss is het gissen, al heeft hij al meerdere malen laten zien dat hij geen problemen heeft met twee achtereenvolgende grote rondes. In Zwitserland liet Kelderman zien dat het met zijn vormpeil wel snor zit, waarmee hij in principe op pole position staat van deze twee. Maar, blijft Wilco ook (letterlijk en figuurlijk) overeind in het geweld in de chaotische eerste Tourweek?

Team TotalEnergies

Peter Sagan (1,5M) – Het laatste kunstje van Peter de Grote in de Tour, wie durft het aan om hem een ereplaats te geven in zijn ploeg? Staat zelden meer op scherp en het scherpe in zijn sprints lijkt er wat vanaf, maar zal zich ongetwijfeld nog één keer goed opladen en zichzelf een paar keer de top-10 in ‘beuken’. Interessant voor als je nog een plekje vrij hebt voor een sprinter, maar verwacht geen wonderen meer van Peter. Pierre Latour (500K) – Veel avonturiers in de selectie van TotalEnergies, op basis van resultaten in het verleden en potentieel zou Latour allicht de beste keuze zijn. Gaat doorgaans redelijk goed omhoog en heeft in het verleden zijn pijlen nogal eens gericht op de bergtrui. Heeft wel een moeilijk jaar tot op heden, maar met Fransen in eigen land weet je het maar nooit...

UAE-Team Emirates

Tadej Pogačar (6,5M) – Drie jaar op rij de meeste punten in het spel, in de race voor geel, bollen en wit en grandioos in het voorjaar: een no-brainer. Of zal zijn blessure nog roet in het eten gooien en durf je daar op te speculeren? Wij verwachten dat Tadej er gewoon zal staan en dan zit je toch niet lekker zonder hem in het team.. Adam Yates (3,0M) – Beoogd meesterknecht van Pogačar, die ook zelf al mooie dingen heeft laten zien in Tours en Vuelta’s. Nog niet in de absolute topvorm, maar dit jaar wel keurige resultaten in Romandië (winst) en de Dauphiné (2e). Kan allicht ook nog de nodige teampunten in de wacht slepen en is daarmee wel aantrekkelijk, al is 3,0M wel een serieus prijskaartje voor een ‘knecht’.

Uno-X Pro Cycling Team

Alexander Kristoff (1,5M) – Deze Noorse beer mag je nooit afschrijven en zal altijd een aantal punten pakken in de vlakkere etappes. Scoorde een paar goede ereplaatsen in de Baloise Belgium Tour en lijkt een redelijke vorm te pakken te hebben. Toch zal hij het niet redden tegen de top van het sprintersgilde, waarmee 1,5M een flinke investering is. Søren Wærenskjold (750K) – De man in vorm bij de Noren en lekker geprijsd! Won de tijdrit in de Baloise Belgium Tour en ging verrassend goed en lang mee in de heuvels rondom Durbuy. Heeft een goede sprint maar zal normaliter de sprint aantrekken voor Kristoff. Mooie opvulling als je nog een gaatje hebt. Tobias Halland Johanessen (750K) – Winnaar van de Tour de l’Avenir in 2021 en een groot Noors talent voor de grote rondes. Eindigde in de Dauphiné wel achter zijn teamgenoot Torstein Træn (500K, ook erg leuk!), maar als hij goed piekt naar de Tour verwachten wij van (jongere) Tobias mooie dingen!

Tour de France 2023 – Analysing the contenders

Most of the hard work has been done and there is precious little time to conjure up form, condition or confidence for the 2023 Tour de France favourites. The big race, starting in Bilbao on July 1, is almost here.

That means it’s final tune-up time: the Critérium du Dauphiné and Tour de Suisse have given us the final display of form for the WorldTour’s best, with only their final preparations separating them from La Grande Boucle.

As ever, Cyclingnews has its form ranking for the favourites, with regular updates through the season and into the Tour itself.

We rank the Tour de France contenders by their performances and as the months have now trickled down to scant days before the Grand Départ in Bilbao, it's time to run the rule over the contenders for the maillot jaune for a final time.

1. Tadej Pogačar

• Team: UAE Team Emirates
• Tour experience: Winner in 2020 and 2021, runner-up in 2022
• 2023 results: 1st at Jaén Paraíso Interior, 1st with three stage wins at Ruta del Sol, 1st with three stage wins at Paris-Nice, 4th at Milan-San Remo, 3rd at E3 Classic, 1st at Tour of Flanders, 1st at Amstel Gold Race, 1st at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Time Trial, 1st at Slovenian Nationals Road Race 

It was a spring campaign for the ages from the voracious and versatile Pogačar. However, it ended unceremoniously when a fractured wrist at Liège-Bastogne-Liège led to several weeks off the bike, though he was soon putting in long indoor training sessions to compensate.

In late May, he went out to Sierra Nevada (later than his teammates) to do more preparation. He then headed to Sestriere for a final bit of training and recon in the rarefied air.

It remains to be seen whether the injury affects him or if his glorious, tiring spring has any impact but Pogačar indicated that he’s not worried in his latest interview with Cyclingnews . The only races on his schedule between Liège and the Grand Départ were the Slovenian national time trial and road race, both of which he won hands down, which hardly augers badly.

Pogačar will have to be at his best to beat Vingegaard, but revenge has likely been on his mind ever since the finale of last year’s race. You’d be a fool to write him off.

=1. Jonas Vingegaard

• Team: Jumbo-Visma
• Tour experience: Winner in 2022, runner-up in 2021
• 2023 results: 1st with three stage wins at O Gran Camiño, 3rd at Paris-Nice, 1st with three stage wins at Itzulia Basque Country, 1st with two stage wins at Critérium du Dauphiné

With Pogačar out of racing sight and more out of mind for much of the build-up to the Tour, Jonas Vingegaard was the focal point for rivals and observers alike with his strength and ease. They’re so closely-matched, we’ve put the pair in equal first.

After a three-week altitude camp at Sierra Nevada, he passed his last test at the Critérium du Dauphiné with flying colours, winning a brace of stages and the overall, with the biggest winning margin since Charly Mottet in 1987. As if that wasn’t enough, after the race the defending champion indicated he can still improve.

Back in March, Pogačar got the better of Vingegaard at Paris-Nice . Both he and Pogačar have similar remarkable win rates this year but of course the Tour de France is the one that counts above all others. The form book and results suggest it’ll be their duel for glory. All roads lead to Bilbao and a renewal of hostilities between the two titans of the 2022 edition.

3. Jai Hindley

• Team: Bora-Hansgrohe
• Tour experience: none
• 2023 results: 16th at Tour Down Under, 32nd at Cadel Evans Race, 13th at Volta ao Algarve, 32nd at Ardèche Classic, 53rd at Drôme Classic, 15th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 8th at Volta a Catalunya, 12th at Amstel Gold Race, 83rd at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 4th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Hindley’s season has shifted up a gear at the perfect time. Following finishes on the fringes at Catalunya and the Amstel Gold Race, he was among the strongest at the Critérium du Dauphiné .

Consistency on the climbs at this mini Tour de France was complemented by one of the best time trial rides of his career, laying the foundations for fourth overall.

With Vingegaard and Pogačar looking like a cut above the rest, it is likely to be a fierce scrap for the third step of the podium. Tour debutant Hindley will have to get through the hubbub of the first week unscathed, but the 2022 Giro d’Italia winner appears to be in pole position to be the best of the rest.

4. Mikel Landa

• Team: Bahrain-Victorious
• Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th in 2017 and 2020
• 2023 results: 7th at Volta Valenciana, 2nd at Ruta del Sol, 7th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Volta a Catalunya, 2nd at Itzulia Basque Country, 3rd at Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 22nd at Critérium du Dauphiné

We’ve been accustomed to Landa lighting up spring stage races, showing his face at Tirreno-Adriatico , the Volta a Catalunya and Itzulia. His steady run of stage race contention, however, came to an end at the Dauphiné with a particularly poor showing in the time trial. The experienced Basque knows what he’s doing and acknowledged he wasn’t in the best shape before the race. Not ideal, but he’s still on course for a high finish at a TT-light Tour de France.

5. David Gaudu

• Team: Groupama-FDJ
• Tour experience: Five appearances, 4th overall in 2022
• 2023 results: 7th at Tour du Var, 2nd at Ardèche Classic, 4th at Drôme Classic, 2nd at Paris-Nice, 4th at Itzulia Basque Country, DNF at Amstel, Flèche and Liège, 30th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Gaudu was off the pace at the Critérium du Dauphiné in the mountains and against the clock. To boot, he copped social media abuse after a few stages. There’s no cause for panic after one poor performance for France’s big hope.

His spring campaign was strong, finishing next best to Tadej Pogačar at Paris-Nice. It also bears remembering that, though he won a stage, Gaudu wasn’t in the frame at last year’s Dauphiné GC either, and that preceded a career-best result.

6. Enric Mas (crashed out on stage 1)

• Team: Movistar
• Tour experience: Four appearances, 5th in 2020, 6th in 2021
• 2023 results: 5th at Ruta del Sol, 6th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 5th at Itzulia Basque Country, 17th at La Flèche Wallonne, DNF at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 17th at Critérium du Dauphiné

Mas looked like every bit like a Tour de France podium contender eight months ago. He matched his second places in the Vuelta and Il Lombardia with a fan-pleasing, attacking style.

Still, there was little of that on display at the Critérium du Dauphiné. Dropping three minutes to winner Mikkel Bjerg in the time trial was no big surprise; of greater concern was losing nearly that same amount to a flying Vingegaard on the race’s queen stage.

There’s clearly a bit of work to be done to make sure it’s a case of más rather than menos at the Tour de France. Mas wanted to put his COVID-19 abandon of last year’s race well behind him but crashed on stage 1 of the 2023 Tour and was forced out of the race again .

7. Romain Bardet

• Tour experience: Nine appearances, 2nd overall in 2016, 3rd in 2017
•  2023 results: 8th at Tour du Var, 11th at Ardèche Classic, 11th at Drôme Classic, 7th at Paris-Nice, DNF at Volta a Catalunya, 9th at La Flèche Wallonne, 15th at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 7th at Tour de Romandie

Bardet is Mr. Steady of the stage races, rarely terrible or incandescent. The experienced Frenchman sat fourth overall at the Tour de France last summer until an off-day in the blazing sun to Foix put paid to his podium hopes.

COVID-19 in April didn’t seem to slow him down at the Tour de Romandie , where he was seventh. A fifth place at the Tour de Suisse suggests altitude has honed his condition, and he enters the race as a valuable GC contender for DSM.

8. Ben O'Connor

• Team: AG2R Citroën Team
• Tour experience: Two appearances, 4th and a stage in 2021
• 2023 results: 6th Tour Down Under, 46th Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, 13th Tirreno-Adriatico, 14th Volta a Catalunya, 11th Classic Grand Besançon Doubs, 5th Tour du Jura, 50th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 3rd Critérium du Dauphiné

The Australian climbs into our top ten after his third place finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné, repeating his result from twelve months ago. Coming off an altitude camp, O’Connor was the surprise factor in the time trial, delivering AG2R-Citroën’s first-ever top-five performance in a WorldTour race against the clock.

Last year’s Tour was a bust for O’Connor , dropped on the cobbled stage and abandoning with a torn glute. The first week, with its hillier Basque Country start, may well suit the rider from Perth better as he hopes to improve on his landmark 2021 showing.

9.   Giulio Ciccone

• Team: Trek-Segafredo
• Tour experience: Two appearances, wore the yellow jersey in 2019
• 2023 results: 2nd and stage win at Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, 5th at Tirreno-Adriatico, 7th and stage win at Volta a Catalunya, 5th at Flèche Wallonne, 13th Liège-Bastogne-Liège, 11th and stage win at Critérium du Dauphiné

After storming the Bastille in Grenoble for triumph on the last day of the Dauphiné, the little Italian surges into our top ten. Ciccone has talked of going for a Tour de France stage victory and the King of the Mountains this summer. Consistency has been his big problem in Grand Tours.

It could be different this summer. Ciccone has had three victories and barely been out of the top 10 in 2023, in spite of COVID-19 dumping him out of a Giro d’Italia team he was due to lead.

His self-belief will be sky high and he’ll be in a positive frame of mind, getting married weeks before the race. With few time trial kilometres in the 2023 race, a top-10 finish is within his reach.

10. Dani Martínez

• Team: Ineos Grenadiers
• Tour experience: Three appearances, stage win and 28th in 2020
• 2023 results: 25th at Vuelta a San Juan, 1st at Volta ao Algarve, 25th at Paris-Nice, 34th at Itzulia Basque Country, 23rd at Critérium du Dauphiné

With the Tour on the horizon, there is no clear leader for Ineos Grenadiers.

Dani Martínez has been targeting that spot since the start of the season, but the last day of the Critérium du Dauphiné likely knocked the Colombian’s confidence. He was the race’s big loser, losing 10 minutes and tumbling down the GC from sixth overall.

A simple jour sans or indicative of a bigger problem? The Colombian was flying on the way to first place at February’s Volta ao Algarve but hasn’t broken the top 10 on GC since.  Martínez has had a poor start to the Tour, losing 3:13 on stage 1 and a further 7:00 on stage 2 to fall out of overall contention.

Third with Geraint Thomas last year, Ineos Grenadiers are at risk of having their most peripheral Grande Boucle in years. But the kids could step up. Tom Pidcock , who finished a disappointing 22nd at the Tour de Suisse, showed his off-road form in recent weeks, winning in Nove Mesto. In an interview with Cyclingnews the Briton laid out his stage goals but was reticent to see himself as a GC contender just yet.

Former Spanish national champion Carlos Rodríguez’s ninth overall in the Alps eclipsed Martínez’s performance. Rodríguez was the silver lining on a poor opening stage for the British team and was the only Ineos rider in the top 10 after the brutal Grand Depart in the Basque Country.

Bubbling under

Put out a search party for Simon Yates. The Jayco-Alula man has not raced since stomach problems forced him to abandon the Tour de Romandie on stage 2. This summer, less is evidently more for the Briton. He is set to go straight from training at altitude to the Grand Départ. He was second at the Tour Down Under and fourth at Paris-Nice, but his form is unknown.

EF Education-EasyPost leader Richard Carapaz was on the attack at the Critérium du Dauphiné and sprinted to second place behind Julian Alaphilippe. The Olympic champion is flying under the radar a little; he’s not finished in the top 10 in a GC since being runner-up at last year’s Giro d’Italia.

Unfortunately, Carapaz was involved in the same crash that forced Enric Mas out of the Tour, and abandoned before stage 2 with a fractured patella.

Neilson Powless showed his all-round power through Paris-Nice and the spring Classics, and he gives a potential other option for EF.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché Circus Wanty) showed he’s ticking along nicely, finishing seventh at the Dauphiné. Cofidis captain Guillaume Martin was a few seconds and a place higher. Sergio Higuita could be a backup option for Bora-Hansgrohe. Expect those three to be in the mix come July.

2019 Tour de France champion Egan Bernal also performed well in the Critérium du Dauphiné high mountains to finish twelfth overall. Given his knee problems this year, it’s surely too soon for Tour contention, but with confirmation of his team selection it's clear his recovery from his life-threatening crash appears to be going well.

With his withdrawal from the race with illness, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Qazaqstan Team) didn't give us a showing of his form at the Tour de Suisse, having finished top 10 in the past two editions, but he did win both the road race and time trial in the Kazakh Nationals. Lutsenko's GC hopes were ruined on stages 1 and 2 where he lost a combined 18 minutes to the leaders and he will likely now chase stage wins.

As for the Giro d’Italia giants?  Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič  (Jumbo-Visma)  won’t be at the Tour , which makes sense, but it’s a shame for the fans. The sport’s blue riband event also comes too soon for Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos Grenadiers) who crashed out of the Giro d’Italia with a fractured hip.

We Asked ChatGPT to Help Us Generate a List of Predictions for the 2023 Tour de France.

Here’s what happened when we asked a chabot to predict what will happen in this year's Tour. It—and we—have some thoughts.

We’re just weeks away from the start of the 2023 Tour de France , which means it’s the perfect time to make some bold predictions as to how this year’s race might play out. To help us with this year’s list, we turned to everyone’s favorite chatbot, ChatGPT, to see what it “thinks.”

Here’s what it came up with, along with our commentary as to just how right (or wrong) it might be.

1. “A newcomer will surprise everyone and claim the yellow jersey. In a shocking turn of events, a previously unknown rider will emerge as a dominant force and secure the coveted yellow jersey at the 2023 Tour de France. This underdog's extraordinary performance will captivate fans worldwide.”

As much as we’d love to see it, this sounds a little far-fetched. The defending champion, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard ( Jumbo-Visma ), heads into the Tour as the overwhelming favorite; and Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates), winner of the race in 2020 and 2021 , looks to be the only rider capable of beating him (if he recovers from a broken wrist in time to get himself in shape).

The only “newcomer” capable of defeating these two might have been Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)–but he’s not racing. The 23-year-old won last year’s Tour of Spain and was leading this year’s Giro d’Italia before testing positive for COVID-19 on the eve of the Giro’s first Rest Day. Everyone hopes his team will make a last-minute decision to send his first Tour de France, but all signs point to 2024 as the year in which he makes his Tour debut.

2. “The fight for the green jersey, awarded to the best sprinter, will be fiercer than ever. Several top sprinters will compete head-to-head in thrilling finishes, resulting in a closely contested green jersey competition throughout the Tour.”

We like the chatbot’s thinking here, as this year’s green jersey battle will be tough to predict thanks to the lack of a clear favorite and an unconventional course. The defending champion, Belgium’s Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) has made it clear that he’s not chasing the jersey this year.

And the course makes life really hard for field sprinters, so don’t expect someone to reel off four stage victories on their way to winning green. Instead, we’re wondering if an all-rounder who doesn’t care about the General Classification will take home the jersey for winning the Tour’s Points Classification–someone like France’s Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step). With so many mountain and transitional stages–especially during the Tour’s tough opening week–Alaphilippe looks poised to make an early bid to wear green (and maybe yellow).

3. “After recovering from a career-threatening injury, Great Britain’s Chris Froome (Israel-PremierTech) will make an impressive comeback at the 2023 Tour de France. The former champion will showcase his resilience and determination, surprising everyone with his exceptional performance.”

We love this prediction as it’s bold but not unreasonable. Froome’s story is a testament to just how fragile a career can be. He looked poised to challenge for a record-tying fifth Tour de France victory with INEOS in 2019, but crashed while pre-riding a time trial at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné .

He was 34 at the time, already at the tail-end of his peak years as a grand tour rider, and the crash nearly ended his career. He’s now in his third season with Israel-PremierTech and has enjoyed a relatively trouble-free season (so far). Assuming he makes the team (we think he will), we’d love to see the 38-year-old win one more stage at the Tour, then close the curtain on his storied career.

4. “Breakaway specialists will dominate the mountain stages. The mountain stages of the 2023 Tour de France will witness a surge of breakaway specialists. These talented climbers will take advantage of strategic opportunities, leaving the peloton in awe as they conquer challenging ascents and descend with extraordinary skill.”

The chatbot is onto something here, especially given current racing tactics. Grand tour contenders just don’t seem all that concerned with winning stages anymore–especially if letting a breakaway go up the road means the race behind it is easier to control. At the recently-completed Giro d’Italia, for example, all but one of the race’s 7 mountain stages went to a rider from the breakaway.

Now don’t get us wrong: Vingegaard and Pogačar are exceptions in that they enjoy winning stages while fighting for the yellow jersey, but if the race is close, don’t expect them to risk too much in order to do it.

5. “A lesser-known team will defy expectations and clinch victory in the team time trial. This unexpected triumph will showcase the importance of teamwork and demonstrate that cycling is not just about individual performances.”

Not sure what the chatbot is thinking here: there’s no team time trial in this year’s Tour de France. (Let this be a lesson to you kids, do your own homework!)

6. “A talented rider will deliver an extraordinary performance during the individual time trial, shattering the existing record for the fastest time. Their exceptional speed and precision will leave spectators in awe and cement their status as a time trial specialist.”

Not gonna happen this year, chatbot! There’s only one individual time trial in this year’s Tour, and it’s hilly, which means the current record of 55.446 km/h (34.5 mph) set by Australia’s Rohan Dennis on Stage 1 of the 2015 Tour de France, is safe.

But Stage 16’s 22.4km individual time trial is the only ITT in this year’s Tour, and it ends with an ascent of the Category 2 Côte de Domancy, where France’s Bernard Hinault dropped his competitors to win the world championship in 1980. So while we won’t see any records broken, we will see fireworks that could shape the outcome of the race overall.

7. “Young talents will steal the limelight. The 2023 Tour de France will witness the rise of promising young talents. These rising stars will showcase their potential, challenging the established veterans and leaving a lasting impression on the cycling world.”

Once upon a time, riders didn’t become grand tour contenders until their mid- to late-20s. Now they burst out of the gates and win tours while barely old enough to drink (in the USA, at least). Case in point: the average age of the last four Tour de France champions is just 22.5.

But while this is less of a prediction and more of a trend, there is someone making his Tour de France debut this year that we could see leaving a lasting impression: Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty). A talented sprinter who last year won Ghent-Wevelgem and a stage at the Giro, the 23-year-old is a good bet to win a stage or two and challenge for the green jersey.

8. “The 2023 Tour de France will prioritize sustainability and environmental responsibility. The race organizers will implement innovative measures to reduce waste, promote recycling, and minimize the event's carbon footprint, setting an example for future sporting events.”

This one’s a given as the Tour’s organizers have been more concerned with sustainability in recent years, and their last environmental audit (conducted in 2021) showed a 40% reduction in emissions overall.

The hope is that this year’s audit indicates that the race is even closer to achieving its goal of a 50% reduction in emissions by 2025, which should be helped by the fact this year’s route is relatively light when it comes to long pre- and post-stage transfers. We’re still not sure if we can consider the Tour an example for other sporting events (there’s still a long way to go before the race will be known for its sustainability), but progress is being made.

9. “Unconventional race strategies will lead to unpredictable outcomes: In a bid to gain an edge over their rivals, teams will adopt unconventional race strategies that defy traditional norms. These innovative approaches will lead to unpredictable outcomes, keeping fans on the edge of their seats throughout the race.”

With two clear favorites in Vingegaard and Pogačar, it’s likely that the only tactical battle to make any difference will take place between these two riders and their teams. But this year’s route is definitely unconventional, with two hard days in the Basque Country to open the race followed a few days later by a mid-week trip through the Pyrenees.

This could lead to some early gaps forming, especially if someone like Vingegaard–who already seems to be approaching top form–chooses to test Pogačar–who’s still recovering from a crash in late-April and is behind in his preparation–right away. GC contenders generally don’t like to take the yellow jersey too soon at risk of over-extending themselves and their teammates in having to defend it for three weeks.

But Vingegaard could gamble by trying to get the better of Pogačar before the Slovenian has a chance to race himself into shape. While this might not lead to an unpredictable outcome–we don’t see anyone other than Vingegaard or Pogačar winning the Tour–it would be an unconventional way for them to do so.

So who will win? Well, we asked the chatbot and here’s what it said:

10. “As an AI language model, I do not have real-time information or the ability to predict future events such as the winner of the 2023 Tour de France. The outcome of sporting events depends on various factors, including the performance and form of the athletes, race strategies, and unforeseen circumstances. It's best to follow the event and its coverage to find out who will win the Tour de France in 2023.”

Tour de France | 10 tips voor je Tourspel, wie moet je wel en vooral niét kiezen?

De Tour de France begint bijna. Zaterdag gaan de renners in het Baskenland van start. Tot die tijd heb je nog kans om aan je Tourploeg te sleutelen als je meedoet aan een van de bekende Tourspellen. Wie moet je wel en vooral niet kiezen? Wij helpen je een klein beetje op weg en geven je tips voor je Tourspel.

Doe je trouwens met ons mee aan het AD Wielerspel? We hebben een eigen ‘vriendenleague’ aangemaakt, zodat je het tegen andere Fiets-lezers op kunt nemen. Aan het einde van de Tour geven we aan de vijf beste spelers leuke prijzen weg, dus twijfel niet en schrijf je in !

Tip 1: Wat zijn de spelregels?

Om te beginnen is het goed om te weten waarmee je punten kunt verdienen. Gaat het in het spel om de daguitslag of telt uiteindelijk ook het eindklassement mee? Sprokkel je ook punten als een ploeggenoot van een renner wint of niet? Kortom: verdiep je eerst in het spel en de spelregels alvorens je een team samenstelt.

Tip 2: Kies voor Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard

Dit is de meest saaie en voor de hand liggende tip: kies voor Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard. Deze Tour de France is er eentje voor de klimmers, en wat dat betreft steken Pogacar en Vingegaard er bovenuit. Zonder pech of ander ongemak gaan zij veel punten scoren in de Tour. Twijfel dus niet en neem ze sowieso in je team, anders sta je waarschijnlijk voor de start al met 1-0 achter.

Tip 3: Bekijk het parcours

Een goede voorbereiding is het halve werk. Haal de Tourgids van Procycling in huis, blader door het etappeoverzicht en kom erachter dat het een loodzware Tour wordt met veel bergetappes. Stem je team daar een beetje op af.

Tip 4: Wissels maken het verschil

Bij de meeste Tourspellen is het mogelijk om renners gedurende de Tour te wisselen. Meestal heb je zo’n vijf wissels achter de hand. Soms moet je ze vooraf al doorgeven, soms kun je ze tijdens de Tour nog aanpassen. Denk hier ook goed over na: telt bijvoorbeeld het eindklassement mee voor de punten, zorg er dan voor dat je klassementsrenners achter de hand houdt.

Tip 5: Tijdrijders, ja of nee?

Deze Tour de France staat er maar één tijdrit op het programma. Dubbel pech voor de specialisten: de race tegen de klok loopt ook nog op. Wil je voor iemand als Stefan Küng kiezen puur voor die ene tijdrit? Doe het niet. Gelukkig doen er al niet heel veel specialisten mee aan deze Tour, dus dat maakt de keuzestress wat dat betreft al een stuk makkelijker.

Tip 6: Kies voor de kopmannen

Bestudeer altijd goed de ploegen en lees wat ze er in de media over zeggen. Wie worden er naar voren geschoven als kopmannen? Bij veel sprintploegen weet je al zeker voor wie ze gaan. Lotto Dstny mikt bijvoorbeeld volledig op Caleb Ewan, Jayco-AlUla zet in op Dylan Groenewegen en Fabio Jakobsen wordt bij Soudal-Quick Step uitgespeeld. Zij gaan punten pakken. Maar hoe zit dat bij bijvoorbeeld Bora-hansgrohe? Jordi Meeus en Danny van Poppel zijn gelijkwaardig aan elkaar. Het is dan maar de vraag wie er daadwerkelijk gaat sprinten, ook al zou Meeus op papier de sprinter moeten zijn. Ga voor de kopmannen.

Tip 7: Trap niet in Peter Sagan

Heb je een zwarte lijst samengesteld? Grote kans dat Peter Sagan erop staat. Natuurlijk heeft de Slowaak een enorme erelijst opgebouwd en ja, heel misschien sprint hij nog wel een keer in de top 10, maar op basis van zijn laatste resultaten is de kans klein dat de Slowaak rendabel voor jouw team wordt. Twijfel je over een renner die je al vaker in de steek heeft gelaten? Doe het niet. Ander goed voorbeeld: Simon Yates. Zal je net zien dat Sagan het groen wint en Yates de Tour, dan verwijderen we deze tip gewoon

Tip 8: Kies voor klimmende sprinters

Misschien wel de belangrijkste tip: kies voor sprinters die goed een berg kunnen verteren. Dylan Groenewegen heeft in aanloop naar de Tour vooral etappekoersen gereden waarin er geklommen moest worden. Dat om straks ‘frisser’ aan de sprintetappes te beginnen. Biniam Girmay, Wout van Aert en Jasper Philipsen kunnen prima een berg over, bij Alexander Kristoff, Sam Welsford en Fabio Jakobsen is dat meer de vraag. Hoeveel sprinters halen de slotweek? Gokje: niet veel.

Tip 9a: Speel op de verrassing

Pogacar, Vingegaard, Jakobsen, Philipsen, Van Aert en Van der Poel heeft iedereen waarschijnlijk wel in zijn of haar team, het gaat er meer om wie je daarnaast opstelt. Elke Tour is er wel een verrassing, en jij moet die renner in je ploeg hebben om je vrienden en collega’s te slim af te zijn. Wie harkt voor jou de punten binnen?

Tip 9b: Pello Bilbao

Met zo’n achternaam moet de renner van Bahrain-Victorious in het openingsweekend wel punten scoren.

5 Pooltips waarmee jij het verschil gaat maken deze Tour de France!

De tijd van Tourpooltjes is weer aangebroken! Kies een van deze renners om de 'concurrentie' op kantoor of de sportclub te slim af te zijn.

1) Maxim Van Gils

Jan Bakelants noemt hem als verrassing van de Tour de France, Thijs Zonneveld ziet hem mooie prestaties behalen komende weken. Maxim Van Gils is een van de renners die veel genoemd worden als potentiële outsiders. Niet gek, want de Vlaming werd in het voorjaar zevende in de Amstel Gold Race en elfde in Luik-Bastenaken-Luik.

2) Axel Zingle

Hij maakt zijn debuut in een grote ronde, maar Axel Zingle heeft in andere koersen al mooie dingen laten zien. De Fransman werd dit jaar vijfde in de Brabantse Pijl en tiende in de Amstel Gold Race. Verteert de bergjes aardig, en is daarbij ook snel aan de meet.

3) Corbin Strong

Wat voor Zingle geldt, gaat ook voor Corbin Strong op. Al zal de Nieuw-Zeelander zich hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook gaan mengen in massasprints. De 23-jarige Strong toonde zich in goede vorm tijdens de Route d'Occitanie en gaat normaalgesproken een puntenpakker zijn.

4) Tobias Halland Johannessen

Tobias Halland Johannessen is de vooruitgeschoven pion van Uno-X Pro Cycling Team. De Noor, die in 2021 de Tour de l'Avenir won, heeft de volgende stap nog niet kunnen zetten, maar met zijn klimkwaliteiten en zijn punch heuvelop, zou Johannessen zomaar de verrassing van deze Tour de France kunnen worden.

5) Phil Bauhaus

Laat wielerfans een rijtje topsprinters op papier zetten en de naam van Phil Bauhaus wordt er niet snel tussen gezet. De Duitser is op een goede dag echter in staat om de snelste renners van het peloton te kloppen. Tour de France 2023: GC Favourites

Are Jonas Vingegaard and his Jumbo-Visma team mates able to challenge the 24 year old phenomenon from Slovenia again? His 2020 win came as a surprise. The Jumbo Bees were in control during the whole race until their then leader Primoz Roglic succumbed in the Planche des Belles Filles ITT and Tadej Pogacar ran away with the yellow jersey.

Pogacar’s 2021 triumph came as no surprise whatsoever and last year he continued in his omnipotent ways until Jumbo-Visma rolled out some incredible team tactics. It was not one rider who dislodged Pogacar, it was a team effort. After isolating the defending champion, the 11th stage saw Roglic and Vingegaard taking turns on the attack, afer which the Dane finished it off in the final climb. And Van Aert worked as Pogacar’s executioner in the Hautacam climb on the eighteenth day of action. He set such a brutal pace that Pogacar cracked and the two Jumbo Bees marched on together. Vingegaard took both the stage and the Tour de France win in Hautacam.

Sheer dominance Pogacar’s dominant performance this season is even more impressive than last year’s spring campaign. He kicked off in February with a win in the new gravel classic Clásica Jaén Paraíso Interior and continued his winning streak in the Ruta del Sol (GC plus three stages), Paris-Nice (GC plus three stages) and the Tour of Flanders, Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne. He was the hot favourite to add Liège-Bastogne-Liège to his tally also, but he crashed out with scaphoid fracture in his left wrist and did not race until the Slovenian national championships. He returned with a bang, winning the (mountain) time trial with a 5 minutes margin. Three days later he added the national road race title to his tally.

How many percent will Pogacar be missing after his training setback? Probably zilch. Chances are that he is more than ever ready to rumble. Or, in the case of Pogacar, it’s better to state that he is ready to have fun again. He seems to be racing for the sheer fun of it and victories come as a byproduct.

The only races in which he started this season without winning are the E3 and Milan-San Remo. On both occassions he was up there in the finale, but he had to settle for third and fourth place, respectively.

Pogacar versus Vingegaard The only 2023 clash between the two most recent Tour de France winners happened on Paris-Nice and Pogacar outperformed his rival with remarkable ease. Vingeaard was happy if he could hold the wheel of the Slovene, but that was about it. Pogacar was in complete control and a minor acceleration was enough to solo to one of his three stage wins. So if the Race to the Sun is an indicator, Vingegaard will only stand a chance to win Le Tour again if something nasty happens to Pogacar.

Obviously, past performances are no guarantee for future wins. And it’s insane to expect a three month old race to predict the Tour de France outcome. Yet, Pogacar’s dominance was staggering.

Not that Vingegaard was riding a tricycle between Ferrari’s during his 2023 campaign. On the contrary. The title defender pulled off a ‘Pogacar’ (GC plus three stages) in the O Gran Camiño only to repeat that in the Tour of the Basque Country. Recently, he won the Critérium du Dauphiné in similar fashion – GC plus two stages.

And what about the others? Given the dominance of a select group of riders, other GC contenders did not have a lot of opportunities to make a name for themselves. Not only Pogacar emerged as a gluton, Roglic did the same by winning the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour of Catalunya and Giro d’Italia. As said, Vingegaard turned out on top in the Tour of the Basque Country and the Dauphiné.

The two remaining stage races on the UCI WorldTour – Tour de Suisse and Tour de Romandie – were won by Mattias Skjelmose and Adam Yates, respectectively. It was the first big win for the 22-year old Dane, who used to be considered a hilly specialist, but seems to have reinvented himself as a GC contender. And as far as Yates in concerned. If things work out the way they should, Yates is not going to be a GC contender on the Tour de France, as he is riding as a super domestique for Pogacar. By contracting the Briton, UAE Emirates aims to avoid last year’s scenario in which Pogacar becomes isolated in the mountains, leaving him to the tender mercies of the Jumbo Bees.

It goes without saying that Vingegaard/Jumbo-Visma and Pogacar/UAE Emirates will be watching each other closely in the Tour de France. Other riders could benefit from this mutual obsession. David Gaudu for instance. The great French hope on the Tour de France was up there with the Dane and Slovene on the Race to the Sun. In fact, he finished in second, behind Pogacar, but ahead of Vingegaard. The Tour of the Basque Country was less satisfying for the Groupama-FDJ leader, as he did not stand a chance against Vingegaard and finishes in fourth. The Dauphiné was even more disappointing, as he finished 25 minutes down on Vingegaard.

Same story for Mikel Landa. He was invisible on the Dauphiné and was dropped on most of the climbs. Let’s say he was causing a smokescreen for his rivals and is actually in tip-top shape. After all, he was the best of the rest in the Tour of the Basque Country. But still, it will be a huge suprise if he would win the Tour de France. A podium spot, at best. The Basque stylist never won a multi day stage race in his career.

How about Enric Mas? Movistar’s leader shone brightly on La Vuelta in recent years and aims to the same on Le Tour. Both in 2021 and 2022, he finished in second in his homerace. That said, he never won a stage race either, and it would be spectacular if he bucked this trend in the biggest race on the planet.

Richard Carapaz, that’s another story. His 2023 campaign hasn’t been commanding, to say the least, but he did finish on the podium in the Tour de France of two years ago. Moreover, he was up there with Pogacar and Vingegaard in the decisive high altitude finales. He is a fighter and a winner, who is not dropped easily. The Ecuadorian won a Grand Tour before (Giro, 2019) and also turned out on top in the Tour de Suisse (2021). Not to mention that he is Olympic gold medalist (Tokio, 2021).

Simon Yates is another Grand Tour winner. The Briton won the 2018 Vuelta a España after missing out on the Giro d’Italia triumph earlier that year. Two years later he also won the Tirreno-Adriatico before he gradually turned into a stage hunter. Arguably, Yates is one of the darkest horses for a Tour de France win. Nobody really sees him as a GC contender anymore, while he does have the skill set.

Jai Hindley also tasted the sweetness of success in a Grand Tour. Last year he took the Giro d’Italia somewhat by surprise. Although it’s kind of strange that it was a suprise. Three years ago he lost the maglia rosa on the final day to Tao Geoghegan Hart, so his credentials are solid.

Hindley is a strong candidate for the podium. He finished in fourth in the Dauphiné, one spot behind his compatriot Ben O’Connor, who is also expected to excell in France. Adam Yates finished in second, which is obviously good news for his leader.

The 2023 Tour de France Grand Depart  will be a big one as it takes place in cycling heartland, the Basque Country on the Spanish side of the border. This is an area with a rich cycling tradition and super passionate supporters. 

The race kicks off on July 1 and finishes on July 23. As is tradition, the Tour de France will  finish in Paris. 

Specific info on each stage and more detailed maps are also usually published online each May and in the official race program . We'll post links to it when it's released.

Stage 1: Saturday, July 1  – Bilbao to Bilbao, 182km 

For the first time in a few years, the Tour de France starts with a full stage, rather than a time trial – and it isn't an easy introduction to the Tour.

Bilbao is the host for this 185km loop ride that takes in a good 3300m of climbing. There are five  climbs with points up for grabs straight away in the polka dot contest. The climbs on the route are the  Côte de Pike – just 10km from the finish – plus the   Côte de Laukiz , the  Côte de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe , the  Côte de Morga  and the  Côte de Vivero .

Stage 2: Sunday, July 2 – Vitoria-Gasteiz to San Sebastian, 209km

The opening stages are a whistle-stop tour of the jewels of the Basque region. From Bilbao on day one we go to the popular seaside resort of San Sebastian.  The day may end on the coast but it's not a flat ride: there are  5 climbs on stage 2.

Stage 3: Monday, July 3 – Amorebieta-Etxano to Bayonne, 185km 

We know the stage starts in Amorebienta-Etxano and heads back across the border into France .   

Stage 4: Tuesday , July 4 -  Dax to Nogaro Circuit, 182km

Potentially another day for the sprinters as they go head-to-head on the Nogaro circuit.

Stage 5: Wednesday, July 5 - Pau to Laruns, 165km

It wouldn't be the Tour de France without Pau on the map – today is also the first mountain stage.

Stage 6: Thursday, July 6 - Tarbes to Cauterets, 145km

Say hello to the Aspin and Tourmalet, part of 3750 metres of climbing.

Stage 7: Friday, July 7 - Mont de Marsan to Bordeaux, 170km

The Tour visits Bordeaux for the 82nd time – until recent times, it was one of the regular Tour towns. This is the first visit in more than 10 years, though. It'll be a sprint finish along the riverfront, ending at  Place des Quinconces.

Stage 8: Saturday, July 8 - Libourne to Limoges, 201km

The sprinters capable of powering up a short but difficult climb could take the win.

Stage 9: Sunday, July 9 -  Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat to Puy de Dôme, 184km

An icon returns.

Rest day - Monday, July 10 - Clermont-Ferrand

The area around Clermont-Ferrand also features prominently in the Tour de France Femmes 2023 .

Stage 10: Tuesday, July 11 - Parc Vulcania to Issoire, 167km

One for the breakaway.

Stage 11: Wednesday, July 12 - Clermont Ferrand to Moulins, 180km

A day for the sprinters.  

Stage 12: Thursday, July 13 - Roanne to  Belleville-en-Beaujolais 169km

The formation of the breakaway will be one of the critical moments on this hilly stage.

Stage 13: Friday, July 14 - C hâtillon-Sur-Chalaronne to Grand Colombier,  138km

Stage 14: Saturday, July 15 -  Annemasse to Morzine, 152km

4200 metres of climbing, including the Col de la Ramaz and Joux Plane . This is also the 2023 L'Etape du Tour stage . That's on July 9.

Stage 15: Sunday, July 16 - Les Gets to Saint Gervais, 180km

Rest day: Monday, July 17 - Saint Gervais Mont Blanc

Stage 16: tuesday, july 18 - passy to combloux, 22km.

After 5 very hard stages, the sprinters will find a route that should facilitate their return front and centre .

Stage 19: Friday, July 22 - M oirans-en-Montagne to Poligny, 173km

A 8km long final straight, the dream for the sprinters' teams .

Stage 20: Saturday, July 22 - Belfort to L e Markstein, 133km

A final chance in the mountains with a route for the leaders . This stage has the last 2 climbs in the Tour.

Stage 21: Sunday, July 23 - Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines to Paris Champs-Elysées, 115km   

As is tradition, we finish on the  Champs-Elysées . 

Time bonuses and points

In 2023, time bonuses will be awarded at the finish of each stage – 10, 6 and 4 seconds for the first three riders across the line.

Bonus points will also be awarded on strategic mountain passes and summits. The first three riders across these will pick up bonuses of 8, 5 and 2 seconds. The mountain-top bonus points won't count towards the points classification.

Preview: Your stage-by-stage guide to the 2023 Tour de France route

Tricky early stages and GC tests make this a difficult Tour de France.

We haven’t seen a Tour de France route quite like this one before. Not only because the host of the Grand Départ, the beautiful Basque city of Bilbao, has never hosted a Tour stage before, but because the overall direction and balance of the stages is unique in modern Tours de France.

It’s a difficult Tour, right from the start. The first week features more climbing than usual, much of it on the short, punchy ascents we know from races like the Tour of the Basque Country and Klasikoa San Sebastian. It’s a climber’s Tour, too, with only one 22 km time trial, which itself contains a difficult Category 2 climb. The 2023 Tour de France never goes more than two days without some sort of potential GC shakeup. That is no accident.

The route starts in northern Spain and heads in a mostly northeasterly direction from there, doubling back on itself multiple times and, quite unusually, camping for long periods in two different cities. We spend four days within shouting distance of Clermont-Ferrand in the middle of the country, and then sit again in the heart of the Alps for three days (four if you include the rest day in the middle) near the end of the race.

The hardest stage, on paper, is probably stage 17 , which finishes on the new Tour favorite Col de la Loze, or 14 , which has endless climbing. Stages 15 , and 6 are in the same bracket. Monsters, each of them.

The Alps win out over the Pyrenees this year, at least in terms of total difficulty. But the race touches all five of France’s mountain ranges, and the days in the Massif Central, Vosges, and the Jura shouldn’t be ignored. In the Massif Central, a finish atop the volcano at Puy de Dôme contains some of the steepest kilometers of the whole race. In the Vosges, the final stage to Le Markstein has all the hallmarks of a GC trap. Its placement just a day before Paris could make it the most thrilling stage of the race.

This route is … evenly loaded?

There’s been a fair amount of chatter about this Tour route being frontloaded. That isn’t wrong when you put the route in context of previous years, but it isn’t exactly right when you compare the first week to the second half of the race.

To aid in visualizing the route as a whole, we (subjectively) ranked every stage’s potential GC jeopardy on a scale of 1-10. One is a sprint stage. Ten is a crazy high mountain day with an uphill finish (there are no 10s in this year’s Tour). Hilly stages like those found in Bilbao in the first week all sit between four and six. They’re hard, and could see potential time gains, but they’re not high-mountain hard.

The result? What appears to be a very balanced route. Like anybody trying to build narrative, the Tour de France clearly doesn’t want to slow things down for too many days in a row. Thierry Gouvenou, who designs the Tour’s routes, peppered interesting and/or difficult stages throughout the race, all the way from the short, punchy climbs of stage 1 to the final climbing day to Le Markstein.

The race will feature a total of 30 climbs categorized 2 or higher. That’s seven more than last year, three more than 2021. They are spread quite evenly, as the above chart suggests. One in the Basque country, six in the Pyrenees, four in the Massif Central, one in the Jura, 13 in the Alps, and five in the Vosges.

GC favorites will have to be on their game from stage 1 to stage 20. That’s somewhat unusual. But it should make for a fantastic race.

Let’s take a look at the profiles, key moments, and defining features of each stage of the 2023 Tour de France.

Stage 1: Bilbao to Bilbao – 182 km

Date: Saturday July 1, 2023 Stage type: Hilly Potential winners: Puncheurs or possibly a GC man. Julian Alaphilippe, Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard. Or maybe even Wout van Aert or Mathieu van der Poel. What to watch for: Jonas Vingegaard won a similar stage of the Dauphiné in June. He seems to have been working on his punch. Will he take advantage?  Stage 1 summary: No easing into this Tour de France. The very first stage takes in 3,300 meters (10,000 feet) of climbing in a large loop starting and finishing in Bilbao, in the heart of the cycling-mad Basque region. The final climb, the last in a series of four in the last 60 km, is the Côte de Pike, a nasty kicker that averages 10% over 2 km. To further increase the importance of that climb, there are bonus seconds (8-5-2) available for the first three riders over the top. 

It’s mean. It will split things up. The first yellow jersey (and all the rest of the jerseys) is on the line. 

It’s also taking place in one of cycling’s traditional heartlands, and specifically a region that has produced climbers by the bucketload. From 1994 to 2013, the sight of the distinctive orange jerseys of the team built around the Euskadi Cycling Foundation flocking to the front meant the real climbing was about to start. Names like Unai Etxeberria and Iban Mayo, and later Mikel Landa and the Izaguirre brothers, all performed their acts of antigravity while racing in that bright orange. The team is now rebuilding, currently with ProTeam status, with the goal of returning to the Tour de France.

Stage 2: Vitoria-Gasteiz to Saint-Sébastien – 209 km

Date: Sunday July 2, 2023 Stage type: Hilly Potential winners:  Bauke Mollema loves the Jaizkibel climb. So do riders like Mathieu van der Poel, Matej Mohoric, and EF’s Neilson Powless. What to watch for: San Sebastian often comes down to a small group sprint and that’s the likely outcome of this stage, too. Stage 2 summary: This stage finishes 500 meters lower than it starts, but don’t let that fool you.

The decisive climb from Donostia San Sebastian Klasikoa, a post-Tour one-day race in the region, is placed just 20 km from the finish of stage 2. The slopes of the Jaizkibel, 8 km long and averaging 5.1%, with a final 4 km at 7%, have decided most editions of that race.

The descent down the backside and into the finish could prove just as decisive in stage 2 of the Tour de France.

Stage 3: Amorebieta-Etxano to Bayonne – 185 km

Date: Monday July 3, 2023 Stage type: Flat Potential winners: Mark Cavendish, Fabio Jakobsen, Jasper Philipsen What to watch for: Potential echelons along the coast.  Stage summary: A couple early and relatively easy climbs shouldn’t spoil the day for sprinters, but the run-in to Bayonne isn’t exactly straightforward so a break may think it stands a small chance of pulling one over on the peloton. They’ll certainly try. Plus much of the route runs along the coast, making crosswinds and echelons a possibility. 

Still, a sprint is most likely for the stage that takes the race back to France. 

Stage 4: Dax to Nogaro – 182 km

Date: Tuesday July 4, 2023 Stage type: Flat Potential winners: Biniam Girmay, Jasper Philipsen, Dylan Groenewegen, Mads Pedersen, Caleb Ewan What to watch for: Auto racing circuits are always a bit chaotic, and usually harder than they look. This one is no different. Stage summary: This is the second in a pair of flat stages intended to give the peloton a small breather before the Pyrenees, very much designed for a sprint finish. It finishes on the Nogaro motor racing circuit, including an 800 meter straight into the finish line. 

That might seem to have bunch sprint written all over it, and that is a pretty safe bet. But the top sprinters, and more specifically their teams, may have a difficult time.

The last time Nogaro was used in a pro race was the 2017 Route du Sud when the stage was won by EF’s Tom Scully, who is not a pure sprinter. He was part of a 12-rider breakaway that was caught, but not passed, just as it crossed the finish line. The top sprinters on that stage were Elia Viviani and Bryan Coquard, in seventh and eighth respectively.

Motor racing tracks are full of corners that make it difficult to mount a real chase. If the sprint teams leave it too late, they could get caught out again.

Stage 5: Pau to Laruns – 165 km

Date: Wednesday July 5, 2023 Stage type: High Mountains – Pyrenees Potential winners: Pello Bilbao, Giulio Ciccone What to watch for: The fight for the break will be fierce.  Stage summary: The first true mountain day, though without a mountain-top finish. 

Stage 5 tackles the hors-categorie Col du Soudet at its halfway mark, climbing 15.1 km at 7%. It’s a climb that’s unlikely to see GC fireworks but the day’s breakaway, which could be large given the high likelihood of survival for any breakaway group, will seek to shed some of its members. 

The category 3 Col d’Ichère punctuates the second half of the stage before the final test: the category 1 Col de Marie Blanque, 9.2 km at 7.6%. That sounds hard, right? It’s even harder. The last 4.5 km average over 10%. 

The distance from the bottom of the final descent to the finish line is a bit too far for any real GC moves to stick, but expect a high pace to be set on the slopes of the Marie Blanque. It’s likely some B-level GC contenders lose contact and struggle to come back. 

Stage 6: Tarbes to Cauterets-Cambasque – 145 km

Date: Thursday July 6, 2023 Stage type: High Mountains – Pyrenees Potential winners: Tadej Pogačar, Jonas Vingegaard, Mattias Skjelmose, Adam Yates What to watch for:  Which GC team takes control on the Tourmalet, as that will indicate confidence Stage summary: Finally, the first big uphill finish of the 2023 Tour de France.

A short, sharp stage to end a two-day stint in the Pyrenees, this stage first tackles the Col d’Aspin, 12 km at 6.6%, then the fearsome Col du Tourmalet, 17.2 km at 7.3%. After a long descent off the Tourmalet, the race turns back to the south and climbs up to the finish in Cauterets. 

The 15 km finish climb averages only 5.3% but has a 2 km section at kilometers 13 and 14 that average about 10%. If anybody goes, it will be here. 

Stage 7: Mont-De-Marsan to Bordeaux – 170 km

Date: Friday July 7, 2023 Stage type: Flat  Potential winners: All the sprinters What to watch for: An attempt to distance the pure sprinters on the only category 4 climb Stage summary: Flat. Flat flat. Flatty flat flat. 

The goal of this stage is simple: Get out of the Pyrenees, get up to Bordeaux so we can all have a nice glass of wine and celebrate … Mark Cavendish’s record-breaking stage win ? It only seems right. 

Stage 8: Libourne to Limoges – 201 km

Date: July 8, 2023 Stage type: Mostly flat, punchy uphill finish. Potential winners: Mads Pedersen, Wout van Aert, or Fred Wright from a break What to watch for: Pure sprinters will console themselves by going for the green jersey points 80 km in.  Stage summary: The key route feature of stage 8 is the 2.8 km, 4.8% climb up to the finish line. 

Limoges is traditionally a sprint finish town. The last time the race finished here, Bryan Coquard came as close as he ever has to a Tour stage win, losing a photo finish to one Marcel Kittel. This year, the pure sprinters will have a difficult time contesting. 

First, there are the three categorized climbs (a cat 3 then two cat 4s) in the last 70 km. But that shouldn’t break things up too much. 

This is a classic peak-era Peter Sagan finish, or more recently a Wout van Aert finish. It’s the type of stage that could be incredibly important for the green jersey competition. The pure sprinters will want to try to nab a few points, even if they can’t beat Van Aert. Other more well-rounded fast men like Mads Pedersen will be licking their lips. 

Stage 9: Saint-Léonard-De-Noblat to Puy de Dôme – 184 km

Date: July 9, 2023 Stage type: Mountain Potential winners:  Much depends on the breakway, let’s say Rigoberto Uran for old time’s sake What to watch for: Superb volcano-related puns in Escape Collective headlines. Stage summary: The last 4 km of this stage average over 11%. Before that, the climb to Puy de Dôme sits at a measly 6-7%. 

This is a hard, potentially explosive stage, with one of the most difficult finishes of the entire Tour de France. Puy de Dôme is an ancient volcano and those final 4 km circle the top like some kind of real life Zwift volcano hell route (minus any actual lava). 

The climb was the home of one of the Tour’s iconic duels. Raymond Poulidor (grandfather of Mathieu van der Poel) and Jacques Anquetil battled up it on stage 20 of the 1964 Tour de France, a race that had seen the two crack, recover, swap the lead, and then finally battle shoulder to shoulder on Puy de Dôme. Poulidor won the day but it wasn’t enough to overhaul Anquetil in the overall. It was probably the closest the “eternal second” came to winning the Tour. 

The stage as a whole is not as difficult as what is coming in the Alps. A string of category 3 and 4 climbs will do little to break up the bunch. It should play out somewhat similar to last year’s Planche des Belles Filles stage, which was similarly flat in the leadup to the final climb. After a few hours of cruising, Puy de Dôme will erupt into a half-hour power test. 

July 10 – Rest day

Stage 10: Vulcania to Issoire – 167 km

Date: July 11, 2023 Stage type: Hilly for the breakaway artists. Potential winners: Toms Skujiņš What to watch for: Riders looking to chase the polka dot jersey will want to be in this break Stage summary: Rarely has a stage been so perfectly crafted for a breakaway as this one. 

The peloton will spin out its rest day legs as a breakaway group fights it out up front, racing across five categorized climbs before a mostly downhill run-in to Issoire. That front group will be full of hitters thanks to the string of early climbs that make the breakway selection particularly difficult. 

Stage 11: Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins – 180 km

Date: July 12, 2023 Stage type: Flat Potential winners: Biniam Girmay, Jasper Philipsen What to watch for: A mis-timed chase Stage summary: Clermont-Ferrand is the home of Michelin tires and that is by far the most interesting thing about this stage. 

Unless! Perhaps the peloton mistimes its chase on the undulating, semi-complicated run-in to Moulins. Breakaways have been surviving with increasing frequency in the last few seasons and this is the sort of stage where some strong rouleurs may try to pull off a coup. 

But, let’s be honest, it’ll probably be a sprint. 

Stage 12: Roanne to Belleville-en-Beaujolais – 169 km

Date: July 13, 2023 Stage type: Hilly Potential winners: Breakaway artists who can climb. Perhaps Neilson Powless or Matej Mohorič What to watch for: The sprint points that come after two category 3 climbs will be tantalizing to any of the more-versatile sprinters. Could we see one try to jump in the breakaway, like Peter Sagan used to do? Stage summary: Deep in one of France’s iconic wine regions, this stage seems primed for another successful breakaway. The two category 3 climbs in the first 40 km will ensure that the break is strong. Of the two back-to-back category 2 climbs in the latter third of the stage, the Col de la Croix Rosier is the more difficult, averaging 7.6% over 5.3 km. Expect it to be the final launch pad for either a solo winner, or a small group that splits off the day’s main breakaway.

Stage 13: Châtillon-Sur-Chalaronne to Grand Colombier – 138 km

Date: July 14, 2023 Stage type:  Mountain Potential winners: Jonas Vingegaard , Tadej Pogačar, anybody French What to watch for: It’s Bastille Day! The French riders will of course want this one. Can David Gaudu pull one over on the rest? Stage summary: Tour organizers have been keen on this sort of stage as of late. There isn’t much to separate the peloton ahead of the final test, an hors categorie slog up the 17.4 km Grand Colombier. That means tactics won’t really play a part in this stage. It’s a power test for the GC favorites.

There is a lump of a climb in the Col de la Lèbe before the Colombier, but after a short steep section early on it levels out and shouldn’t present any problems for even half-decent climbers.

The Grand Colombier itself is a monster. The length means there’s no hiding; a bad day could be catastrophic. The climb stair-steps a bit, with three distinct difficult sections. The second kilometer of the climb, 15 km from the finish, averages over 10%. Then kilometers 5-7 sit over 11%. Kilometers 10-12, with just 5 km to go, offer a final opportunity, sitting around 9.5%.

At this point, wind will play a part. The climb turns to the north for its final, flatter kilometers. If riders face a headwind, the top favorites will be less likely to go for it on that last steep section. If they have a tailwind, out of the south, we could see attacks fly with about 5 km to go.

Stage 14: Annemasse to Morzine Les Portes Du Soleil – 152 km

Date: July 15, 2023 Stage type:  Mountains Potential winners: A climber who can descend, like Giulio Ciccone or Tom Pidcock What to watch for: Aurélien Paret-Peintre is from the start town of Annemasse and is likely to try to slide into the break. Stage summary: The Joux Plane has been described as the nastiest climb in the Alps. Others have more notoriety, but few, if any, are actually harder. It was host to a famous Marco Pantani win in 1997 and, of course, the final climb in Floyd Landis’ unbelievable (and unnatural) solo, 120 km ride back into the yellow jersey in 2006. It has often flown under the radar but has a history of turning the Tour on its head.

Starting near the Swiss border before winding its way into the heart of the Alps, this latter half of the stage is nearly identical to the difficult day won by Ion Izaguirre in 2016. That stage also finished with the Col de la Ramaz and Col de Joux Plane before descending into Morzine, and we saw a large and star-studded breakaway ride clear before duking it out on the Joux Plane itself.

Behind, Chris Froome and his Team Sky train trundled along and kept their iron grip on the yellow jersey.

Could we see the same? It’s likely. The early climbs are good breakaway formation territory, and then the strongest climbers of that group will battle for the stage win. Behind, the GC men will have to be careful on Joux Plane and even more careful on the descent off its backside into the finish.

The descent is fast and dangerous, most because it’s unpredictable. The corners are often blind. What lies around the next bend? A sweeping, no-brakes flier or a nasty, decreasing radius corner? Riders will have to be on their game. Legend has it Sean Kelly once hit 124 km/h on this descent.

Stage 15: Les Gets Les Portes Du Soleil to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc – 180 km

Date: July 16, 2023 Stage type:  Mountain Potential winners: GC favorites, Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard What to watch for: Small gaps could hold on this stage with few flat sections Stage summary: A fitting cap to an incredibly difficult few days in the Alps. This stage takes in five categorized climbs (though the cat 2 and HC at the end are really one climb with a very short descent between them) and has some sneaky difficult moments long before the finish.

The Col de la Forclaz Montmin, ridden from the wider but steeper north side, is 90 kilometers from the finish and looks like a potential springboard. If a last-ditch, long-range attack were needed by one of the contenders, this might be the place to do it. The front side is steep, over 10% for its latter half. Crucially, the descent is narrow, no more than one lane in places. A few seconds over the top and a bit of daredevil descending could see somebody go free.

The finale, while technically two climbs, is effectively just one. Waking tired legs up after a long descent near the end of a stage can be difficult, which means the 16% grades at the base of the Amerands could be a make-or-break moment for any GC favorite. Have a bad moment there and there isn’t much time to come back on the 7% average grade up Bettex to Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc.

July 17 – Rest day

Stage 16: Passy to Combloux individual time trial – 22 km

Date: July 18, 2023 Stage type:  Individual time trial Potential winners: Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard, Tadej Pogačar What to watch for: Rest days do odd things to some riders. Will any favorites suffer rest-day legs? Stage summary: A category 2 climb defines this short but crucial time trial.

The Tour marks the “top” of the climb in Domancy, just 2.5 kilometers from the bottom. Those early kilometers are indeed the steepest, averaging 9.4%, but the climb doesn’t stop there. It keeps going for another 4 km. The total climb is 6.3 km at 6.6% average.

Three GC stages remain. This time trial, then two more days in the mountains. A bad day is not an option.

Stage 17: Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc to Courchevel – 166 km

Date: July 19, 2023 Stage type:  Mountain Potential winners: It seems unlikely a break will survive the GC onslaught, so one of the riders going for yellow What to watch for: If the fight for yellow is still close, the bonus seconds on top of Col de la Loze could come into play. Stage summary: Four categorized climbs and the narrow, twisty bike path up Col de la Loze define this final day in the Alps. A small descent means this isn’t technically an uphill finish, but that descent is short enough that any time gaps over the top of Col de la Loze are likely to stick until the finish line.

Stage 17 covers more than 5,000 m (16,400 ft) of climbing. The final three kilometers of the Col de la Loze are the most difficult, hovering around 10%. After that, a 6.5 km descent into Courchevel is capped by a short, incredibly steep (18%) kick up to the altiport.

Stage 18: Moûtiers to Bourg-En-Bresse – 186 km

Date: July 20, 2023 Stage type:  Flat Potential winners: Whatever sprinters are left; Mark Cavendish if he doesn’t have win 35 yet What to watch for: If the green jersey battle is still tight, this is one of the last opportunities for the pure bunch sprinters over the more versatile fast men. Stage summary: The Tour has turned toward Paris. Stage 18 is a long ride out of the Alps, finishing with what should be a bunch kick in Bourg-en-Bresse.

There is a small climb, about 3 km long, 15 km from the finish. But that shouldn’t bother the sprint teams too much.

The final 5 km of the stage run slightly downhill until the flamme rouge at 1 km to go. From there to the finish the road rises slightly.

Stage 19: Moirans-en-Montagne to Poligny – 173 km

Date: July 21, 2023 Stage type:  Hilly Potential winners: Fred Wright, finally What to watch for: Can a break survive? Stage summary: Another push north, another likely sprint stage.

The only potential stumbling block is the category 3 Côte d’Ivory, roughly 25 km from the finish. The final kilometer of the finale is a slight uphill.

If Mark Cavendish doesn’t have his stage win yet, no way will Astana let this stage finish in anything but a sprint.

Stage 20: Belfort to Le Markstein Fellering – 133km

Date: July 22, 2023 Stage type:  Mountains Potential winners: Last-gasp French winner in Thibaut Pinot What to watch for: It’s a trap! Stage summary: A short, punchy stage with over 3,600 m (11,800 ft) of climbing packed into just 133 km across the Vosges mountain range.

Stage 20 doesn’t feature any hors-categorie monsters, but the pair of category 1 climbs in the finale offer up the final opportunity to take – or keep – the yellow jersey. Both climbs sit just over 8%.

The finale runs slightly downhill for the last 8 km, which could dissuade all but the most desperate from trying anything too audacious.

Le Markstein hosted the penultimate stage of last year’s Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, where Annemiek van Vleuten took the race lead with a massive solo effort. That stage used the Petit Ballon/Platzerwasel combination earlier in the route.

The lack of flat roads on this route could lend it self to a long-range move. We can only hope.

Stage 21: Saint-Quentin-En-Yvelines to Paris Champs-Élysées – 115 km

Date: July 23, 2023 Stage type:  Flat Potential winners: Any sprinter left standing What to watch for: Cavendish? Stage summary: Ahh, Paris. We have arrived. The biggest sprint in the world, some post-race champagne, and we turn our attention to Clermont Ferrand, where the Tour de France Femmes has just kicked off.

Pooltips Tour de France 2023 | Onbekend maakt onbemind, zorgen deze gasten ervoor dat jij deze Tour wint?

De Tour de France en pooltjes, het is een jaarlijkse strijd in veel vriendengroepen en kantoren. Bij de ene wint degene met de meeste wielerkennis, bij de andere de koffiejuffrouw (of koffiemeester ;)). Enfin, bij deze de tips die In de Leiderstrui voor deze Tour in de aanbieding heeft, dus doe er je voordeel mee!

De één vindt het misschien belachelijk dat we dit artikel schrijven - ja, daar krijgen we jaarlijks mailtjes over -, de ander benadert ons al enkele weken voor de Tour met de vraag wanneer het artikel online komt - ja, die hebben we er ook bij -. Al bij al kunnen we het dus nooit goed doen, maar we willen vooral benadrukken dat we een breed publiek dienen en dat deze tips daar voor een groot gedeelte bijhoren.

Voor de Tour de France is dat lastiger dan pakweg de Giro of Vuelta, omdat het deelnemersveld over het algemeen een stuk sterker is en de pareltjes er moeilijker uit te halen zijn. De lijn om iemand te kiezen is dan ook uiterst dun, maar we rekenen er intussen wel op dat de gemiddelde pooltjesspeler de winnaar van een belangrijke voorbereidingskoers op de Tour hoort te kennen ;)

Carlos Rodríguez - INEOS Grenadiers

We trappen deze lijst af met Carlos Rodríguez , een ruwe diamant van de Britse miljoenenploeg INEOS Grenadiers. We mogen gerust stellen dat de formatie van Jim Ratcliffe in een soort kopmancrisis zit, daar er in het perscommuniqué met geen woord gerept werd over eventuele klassementsambities. En dat voor een team dat de Tour tussen 2012 en 2019 slechts één keer niet won.

De winnaar van 2019, Egan Bernal, is er voor de eerste keer sinds zijn zware val begin vorig jaar - waarbij hij 11 ribben brak, zijn dijbeen, knieschijf, twee borstwervels, een halswervel, een middenhandsbeentje en zijn duim brak - bij, terwijl Tom Pidcock als winnaar van Alpe d'Huez vorig jaar ook ver zou moeten kunnen komen.

Rodríguez is als één van de grootste Spaanse talenten echter ook van de partij. Hij werd - ondanks een zware val - vorig jaar zevende in de Vuelta, terwijl crashes hem dit jaar in Strade Bianche en recent nog het Critérium du Dauphiné (alsnog negende) ook al parten speelden. De 22-jarige coureur moet op zijn fiets blijven zitten, maar als hij dat doet beschikt hij zomaar over de potentie om zijn ploeg uit de slop te trekken en heel hoog te eindigen in deze Tour de France. Dat hij er de motor voor heeft, bewees hij al in grote koersen als de Ronde van Lombardije, het Spaans kampioenschap, Ronde van het Baskenland en de eerder genoemde wedstrijden.

Jordi Meeus - BORA-hansgrohe

Een Belg in deze lijst, leuk! Jordi Meeus kreeg vorige week dinsdag van zijn ploeg te horen dat hij voor de eerste keer in zijn loopbaan de Tour de France mag gaan betwisten. De 24-jarige renner uit Lommel krijgt bij de Duitse ploeg BORA-hansgrohe direct de rol van kopman toegespeeld, die hij moet delen met klassementsrenner Jai Hindley.

Meeus kan zichzelf goed plaatsen, zo blijkt uit de 23 podiumplaatsen die hij in tweeënhalf jaar prof behaalde. In deze Tour komt daar echter een factor bij, daar hij met Danny van Poppel één van de beste lead-outs ter wereld tot zijn beschikking heeft. Dat Meeus dezelfde taal spreekt als Nederlander Van Poppel, helpt daar natuurlijk ook bij.

Daarbij ziet de spurter van dienst zichzelf als iemand die een klein voordeel heeft tegenover zijn concurrenten middels zijn klimkwaliteiten. Hij gaat goed de bergen over en dat kan hem aan het einde net dat extra beetje jus in de benen opleveren. Het doel daarbij voor deze Tour is ambitieus, maar welgemeend: een ritzege.

Neilson Powless - EF Education-EasyPost

Neilson Powless is een coureur die de gemiddelde wielerliefhebber dit jaar al gezien heeft in de voorjaarskoersen. De voormalig Jumbo-Visma-renner werd onder meer zevende in Milaan-Sanremo, vijfde in de Ronde van Vlaanderen en derde in Dwars door Vlaanderen, alvorens een crash in de Amstel Gold Race hem terugwierp voor de Ardennenklassiekers.

Deze Tour de France is er op papier één die zeer geschikt is voor jongens die op zoek zijn naar ritzeges via de vluchtgroepen in het middengebergte. Powless is daar een gekende klant in, zo was ook te zien in de Tour de France-serie op Netflix. Af en toe iets té gehaast, maar daarin hoopt hij dit jaar een stap te hebben gezet.

Met zijn eendags- en klimkwaliteiten zet de Amerikaan er alvast alles op om dit jaar een ritzege binnen te hengelen voor zijn ploeg EF Education-EasyPost, waar hij bergop ook af en toe moeten knechten voor kopman Richard Carapaz.

Tobias Halland Johannessen - Uno-X

Nieuw in de Tour dit jaar is Uno-X, een Noors-Deense formatie met louter renners uit die landen. Met Alexander Kristoff hebben ze sinds dit jaar hét gezicht van het Noorse wielrennen in de gelederen, maar de kans is aanwezig dat hij binnen enkele jaren vergeten is door de prestaties van ploegmaat Tobias Halland Johannessen .

De 23-jarige klimmer won in 2021 de Tour de l'Avenir en leek vanuit die overwinning rechtstreeks door te stoten naar succes in het profbestaan. Knieproblemen zorgden er eind 2022 en begin dit jaar echter voor dat hij ook de andere kant van de medaille zag, waarbij hij zelfs dacht aan het stoppen met fietsen .

Samen met ploegmaat Torstein Traeen - recent hersteld van teelbalkanker, wat toevallig aan het licht kwam bij een dopingcontrole - liet hij in de belangrijke voorbereidingskoers het Critérium du Dauphiné alvast zien dat hij op de weg terug is. Zowel Traeen als Johannessen kan namens Uno-X mooie dingen laten zien in het hooggebergte, al dichten we die laatste iets meer potentie en punch toe.

Felix Gall - AG2R Citroën Team

In de Giro van vorig jaar stonden ze al in onze lijst: Mattias Skjelmose en Felix Gall , de twee mannen die definitief doorbraken in de meest recente Ronde van Zwitserland. Die laatste nemen we voor deze Tour de France opnieuw op in ons tiental, daar hij de afgelopen maanden echt bokkensprongen vooruit heeft gezet.

Gall is wat je noemt een pure klimmer, iemand die boven komt drijven zodra de weg omhoog loopt. De Oostenrijker leek vorig jaar al de stap naar de top te kunnen maken, maar zette die uiteindelijk de afgelopen maanden. Bij zijn ploeg AG2R Citroën Team zagen ze dat alvast aankomen: zij besloten hem niet te selecteren voor de Giro, maar alles op de voor de Franse ploeg zo belangrijke Tour de France te zetten.

De berggeit zal belangrijk zijn ter ondersteuning van kopman Ben O'Connor, maar ook zeker zijn ding mogen doen in de bergen. Ritzeges en de bergtrui, dat lijken reële ambities voor een Gall in vorm.

Corbin Strong - Israel-Premier Tech

Geen overbetaalde dertigers meer, maar jonge, veelbelovende twintigers: die switch lijken ze bij Israel-Premier Tech gemaakt te hebben in aanloop naar deze Tour de France. Corbin Strong , een 23-jarige Nieuw-Zeelander, heeft daar profijt uit gehaald; hij zal zaterdag in Bilbao zijn grote ronde-debuut maken.

Strong is door zijn ploeg gepresenteerd als sprinter van het team, maar eigenlijk doen ze hem daar nog mee tekort: hij kan namelijk ook nog meer dan goed een heuveltje over en dat maakt hem ook een interessante gast voor de overgangsritten, waar ze bij Israel-Premier Tech vorig jaar zo succesvol in waren.

De pure massasprints zijn nog een tikkeltje te hoog gegrepen, maar deze Strong kan zomaar iemand worden die er opvallend vaak bijzit in verschillende soorten ritten. Dat hij dat kan, bewees hij dit jaar alleszins op meerdere terreinen. In de bergen mikt zijn ploeg overigens op de iets meer ervaren renners Michael Woods en Dylan Teuns, die beiden ook blijk van goede vorm lieten zien.

Louis Meintjes - Intermarché-Circus-Wanty

De schoonheidsprijs zal hij nooit krijgen, maar van Louis Meintjes weet je wel altijd wat je kunt verwachten. De 31-jarige Zuid-Afrikaan eindigt zo'n beetje altijd in de top vijftien van het eindklassement van een grote ronde, waarbij hij met de jaren ook steeds vaker op komt duiken in de strijd om ritzeges.

Wringen om de plaatsjes kan hij niet zo goed, waardoor Meintjes na één week vaak al op flinke afstand staat. Dat gebruikt hij echter juist als kracht, daar hij op die manier in zwaardere ritten mee kan schuiven in vroege ontsnappingen en zo stapje voor stapje terug naar die top tien krabbelt.

We doen Meintjes te weinig eer aan om hem als zo'n coureur te bestempelen, want al bij al is het gewoon een uitstekende klimmer. Met zijn knappe zevende plek in de Dauphiné bewees hij alvast waarom ze bij Intermarché-Circus-Wanty alles op een top tien-plaats voor hem zetten.

Maxim Van Gils - Lotto-Dstny

Nog een Belg! Maxim Van Gils is een 23-jarige renner uit Brasschaat, die over een zeer groot potentieel beschikt. De coureur van Lotto-Dstny rijgt dit jaar de ereplaatsen aaneen, met goede noteringen in het Ardense drieluik als absolute hoogtepunten. Ook in de recent verreden Critérium du Dauphiné zat hij er enkele malen kort bij, tot hij ziek moest uitstappen.

In de komende Tour de France krijgt Van Gils samen met ploeggenoten Pascal Eenkhoorn en Victor Campenaerts de kans in de ritten die te zwaar zijn voor sprinter Caleb Ewan. Van Gils lijkt daarbij over het meeste klimpotentieel van die drie mannen te beschikken, terwijl hij ook nog vrij rap kan aankomen.

Zo kon hij zich dit jaar zelfs mengen in massasprints in de Ronde van Catalonië en de Dauphiné, wat hem toch wel een interessante klant maakt voor bepaalde soort ritten. Daarbij lijkt het erop dat hij nog niet helemaal weet hoe goed hij eigenlijk bergop kan, dus dit is wel een type coureur die zichzelf en heel België de komende weken plezier kan gaan beleven.

Luca Mozzato - Arkéa Samsic

Ploegen die zéér duidelijk communiceren wat de plannen zijn van hun renners in grote rondes, we love it . De Franse ploeg Arkéa Samsic is daar een bekend voorbeeld van, zij laten drie ploegleiders voor elke Giro, Tour of Vuelta precies uit de doeken doen wat de ambities zijn en hoe die bereikt moeten worden.

In de komende Tour is een ritzege het absolute doel, waar Warren Barguil en Clément Champoussin bergop op moeten gaan jagen. In de etappes voor de spurters is die eer toebedeeld aan Luca Mozzato , vorig jaar ook al in onze lijst. Toen stelde hij niet teleur met vijf top tien-noteringen.

Ploegleider Sébastien Hinault ziet Mozzato niet alleen als man voor de pure spurts, maar ook als iemand die de iets heuvelachtigere ritten goed aankan. 'In deze twee koerssituaties kan hij zijn kansen pakken', aldus de sportief directeur van de Franse formatie. Daarbij moeten we wel zeggen dat de Italiaan niet zijn beste jaar kent, tot dusver.

Ion Izagirre - Cofidis

Last but not least in deze lijst: Ion Izagirre , de Baskische waaghals van Cofidis. We konden het niet over ons hart verkrijgen om deze lijst aan te vatten zonder Bask, daar de trots van die provincie absoluut komt bovendrijven in de eerste etappes van deze Tour de France. De Tour gaat namelijk van start in Bilbao, hoofdstad van de Spaanse autonome regio. En Pello Bilbao achten we als té bekend, terwijl de rol van Alex Aranburu bij Movistar nog niet precies duidelijk is.

Bij Izagirre weten we wel meer: hij is altijd, maar dan ook altijd, goed in het Baskenland. Bij zijn laatste zeven deelnames eindigde hij zes (!!!) keer op het podium van de Ronde van het Baskenland, wat hem mede ontzettend gemotiveerd maakt voor de eerste ritten in eigen streek.

Later in de Tour zal Izagirre vermoedelijk de rol van rittenkaper op zich nemen, terwijl hij ook het klassement nog niet helemaal vaarwel zag zeggen na de eerste dagen. Normaliter is het echter Guillaume Martin die voor de algemene rangschikking gaat bij Cofidis, waardoor Izagirre naar hartenlust kan aanvallen.

We’d typically feel bad for Wahlberg’s character, but seeing as how he wakes in Five-Star The Savoy, we’re not so sympathetic. Look out for shots of the posh lobby and that unmistakable porte-cochère. And bonus points to director Julian Farino for giving The Savoy’s FTG Five-Star plaque some quality screen time around the film’s 15th minute.

007 loves visiting Monaco’s legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo.

One of the destinations most synonymous with 007 is glamorous Monaco , namely the legendary Casino de Monte-Carlo . The tuxedoed British secret agent gambled, tangoed and sipped martinis in the opulent gilded space during Never Say Never Again and GoldenEye . After playing roulette, retire to the adjacent Five-Star Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo — the grand, modern 1864 property housed the GoldenEye cast during filming.

If you want to visit the spy’s hometown, Raffles London at The OWO is a must. Writer Ian Fleming worked with naval intelligence in the former Old War Office during WWII, and it’s where he dreamt up the Bond novels. The London hotel opened in 2023, but its stately Edwardian Baroque building has long fronted as M16 for the franchise; spot it in Octopussy , A View to a Kill , Licence to Kill , Skyfall and Spectre .

Chicago, The Bear Style” tour, historian Liz Garibay personalizes itineraries with at least two food stops while visiting show locations, local landmarks and various neighborhoods.
