You’ll receive all of the supplies you need before you head out for an excursion at Mahaulepu Beach or hike up Sleeping Giant.

9. Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

If you’re heading down to the Waimea Canyon, make sure you stop by the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge.

Originally constructed in the early part of the 20 th century as a passageway across the river, the bridge sustained some damage in the early 1990s after Hurricane Iniki made landfall, but I was repaired and reinforced.

It only takes about 10 minutes to cross and the views are certainly awe-inspiring and it’s a pretty neat experience.

While it probably wouldn’t be worthwhile to go out of your way to cross it, if you happen to be in the area, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Once you cross the bridge, you might want to explore the nearby village, where you’ll find stores that feature works by local artists and some shops that serve tasty treats.

The village is just two-minutes away from the bridge.

10. Waimea Canyon

If you’re looking for an awe-inspiring activity on Kauai with kids, check out the Waimea Canyon.

Located on the southwest side of Kauai, the Waimea Canyon has been coined “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, and for good reason; it’s the only geological formation of its type in Hawaii.

Measuring more than 1 mile wide, 14 miles long, and 3,600 feet deep, this canyon is quite extraordinary.

Be sure to stop at the Waimea Canyon Lookout, which offers panoramic views that seem to go on forever.

There are also bathrooms and refreshments are sold in the parking lot.

Travel a little further and you’ll find Kalalau Lookout, which offers incredible views of the Na Pali Coast.

11. Eat Shave Ice

13. Ride a Train Through Kilohana Plantation

The Kauai Plantation Railway takes you on a 40-minute train ride across the historic Kilohana Plantation, an old sugar cane plantation.

During the 40-minute train ride, you’ll stop and feed some native pigs, goats, and donkeys, which further adds to the enjoyment of this excursion.

This tropical paradise offers miles of pristine shoreline and tons of opportunities to splash in the surf, build sandcastles, and even get up-close and personal with marine life in their natural habitat.

While there are dozens of beaches to choose from, some of the best ones for kids include:

• Hanalei Bay. Located on the north side of the island, this crescent shaped bay is the perfect spot to teach your kids how to ride the waves.
• Poipu Beach. Located just a few minutes away from the Grand Hyatt Kauai, Poipu offers calm waters that are perfect for kids of all ages to enjoy playing in. Lifeguards patrol the waters every day, so you can have peace of mind knowing that your children will be protected.  A playground adds to the enjoyment, too.
• Lydgate Beach. Offering two protected pools that are watched by lifeguards, this beach is the perfect spot to enjoy a fun, safe swimming session. There are also some great interactive play structures that the kids will love playing on, as well.

16. Hike the Trails

Fun fact: most of the island of Kauai is inaccessible by car.

Therefore, if you really want to experience all of the majesty that the island offers, you’ll want to make sure a hike (or several) is included on your itinerary.

Countless hiking trails dot the island that wind through the lush rainforests, fertile valleys, majestic waterfalls, and pristine coastlines.

There are trails for families of all experience levels, including those with young children.

Just make sure you prepare ahead. Wear the appropriate foot gear, pack snacks and plenty of water, bathing suits, towels, and a change of clothing.

Of all the things that Kauai is famous for, marine life is definitely high on the list of things that will amaze the kids (and you, too).

Spinner and Bottlenose dolphins swim through the waters that surround the island all year long, so no matter what time of year you’re traveling to the island, there’s a good chance you’ll see these playful creatures.

From land, the best spot to catch their antics is from the Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge, which is a beautiful site on its own.

However, if you want the best chance of seeing these marine animals, head out on one of the many boat tours.

Blue Dolphin Charters is a great choice, as they guarantee you’ll see dolphins, or they’ll give you a refund.

You can also see cute Hawaiian Monk Seals, which often lie on the shore at Poipu Beach to sunbathe.

Sadly, these seals are among the most endangered marine mammals in the world, so while seeing them is certainly a treat, do be respectful and stay as far back as possible.

Between the months of November and April, Humpback whales travel to the waters around Kauai to breed and nurse their young.

If you’re traveling between these months, be sure to make arrangements to see these magnificent creatures.

18. Look for Waterfalls

Waterfalls abound on the Garden Isle. Some are easily accessible, but many do require a bit of an effort to reach.

The double-tiered Wailua Falls is one of the most popular and easiest to reach waterfalls on the island.

Opaekaa is another fairly easy to reach waterfall, which is located in the Wailua River Valley.

There’s no need to hike to reach either of these waterfalls, which makes them particularly appealing to families with children.

Each one is located just a short walk from the nearby parking lots.

19. See the Spouting Horns

Situated within close proximity to Poipu beach, one of the most popular beaches on Kauai, is Spouting Horn, arguably one of the most famous attractions on the island.

A natural blowhole carved out of an old lava flow tube, waters blows through the hole as large ocean waves crash into it.

The spray can reach as high as 60 feet in the air!

Depending on the position of the sun and your vantage point, you may even be able to see rainbows in the spray.

A secondary blowhole creates loud hissing sounds, so make sure you’re listening when the waves crash.

Their 3-hour tour includes the trails of a sugar cane plantation, a lush jungle, a dormant volcanic crater, a lava tunnel, and even an old movie site.

21. Kayak in Wailua River

Kauai is always floated as one of the most popular destinations for a family vacation in Hawaii. Kauai is often called the Garden Island. It is lush, beautiful, and less crowded than some of the larger islands such as Maui and Oahu.

If you’re planning a family trip to Hawaii, our recent trip to the Islands allowed us to explore some of the best things to do in Kauai with kids. And let me tell you, there are so many great Kauai activities for the whole family. Keiki (the name for children in the Hawaiian language) will beg not to leave this beautiful island after these adventures in Kauai for kids.

Kauai was the start of our recent visit to the Hawaiian Islands. We hadn’t visited since our epic tour of the Big Island and O’ahu before our kids were born. This time, we were fresh off of our winter exploration of the Adirondacks and were aching for some of the legendary Hawaiian weather and sunshine. Kauai was our first stop before heading to Maui and Lanai.

We were anxious to take in some of the most amazing Kauai kids activities that we could find. The boys were crazy excited to explore Kauai. And Christina and I were more than ready to shake off the winter cold and feel the warm sand between our toes.

What You Need To Know Before Your Kauai Vacation

Kauai is full of lush landscapes and glorious beaches. And no matter what kind of Kauai adventures you’re searching for, you will find something that fills your Kauai to-do list. At over 7 million years old, Kauai is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. It’s also among the wettest. In fact, parts of the Mt. Waiʻaleʻale on the Na Pali coast sees an average rainfall of 374 in (9,500 mm). But, all this wetness has created the beautiful rainforests and tropical gardens that have seen Kauai be dubbed the Garden Isle.

In fact, it was this rainfall that led to the closure of the Kalalau Trail and much of the northern shore and Na Pali coast trails in 2018. Another fascinating result of the weather in Kauai is the chickens. Yes, chickens. Thanks to hurricanes in 1982 and 1992, many chickens escaped from holding pens. They’ve since taken over the island. There are now chickens everywhere in Kauai. For kids in Kauai, this is great. Chasing chickens is practically a public sport. When you arrive in Kauai, you’ll likely arrive by plane or cruise ship in the city of Lihue. This city is mostly residential. And if you’ve ever explored all of the things to do in Oahu , you’ll recognize that Hawaiian city style. Most visitors head out to outlying towns with a little more action such as Kapa’a, Po’ipu, and Princeville. Where you stay will often determine your list of things to do in Kauai, but I’ll get to those towns later.

What To Pack For Your Trip To Kauai With Kids

Just like every destination, planning your Kauai packing list will help to make sure that you have everything you need for your family vacation. Kauai has very consistent weather year-round with temperatures ranging from the mid-70s F (23 C) to the high-80s F (31 C). And no matter what Kauai adventures with kids you have planned, here are a few things you should not forget.

• Reef safe sunscreen – You won’t find many popular brands of sunscreen for sale in Hawaii. This is because the sale of sunscreen has been limited to brands that are considered reef-safe. Sunscreen brands such as this one  don’t include chemicals that have been known to be destructive to coral reef systems like those found off the islands of Hawaii. • Water shoes – If you’re anything like us, you’ll be spending a lot of time in the water during your time in Kauai with kids. Packing a pair of water shoes will help you explore some of the beaches and streams without hurting your toes. Our Favorite Things To Do In Kauai With Kids

If you’re planning on experiencing some of the best family adventure experiences in Kauai, you don’t have to travel far. The island is small and easy to navigate (although there are a few areas that see some pretty heavy traffic). If you rent a car on the island, it’s very easy to explore yourself and take in as many of the best things to do in Kauai with kids on a do-it-yourself tour. These are a few of our favorite Kauai things to do for families.

Lydgate Farms Chocolate And Island Fruit Tour

We were tired and worn out after our long trip from Toronto to Lihue. We hadn’t gotten to bed until about 1 AM, and when the alarm rang for our 9 am visit to Lydgate Farms the next morning, hitting (or possibly even violently smashing) the snooze button became a real possibility. I’m really glad that I held back because our chocolate and fruit tour at Lydgate farms became the perfect antidote to our jetlag.

We shoved some leftovers into our face, piled into the car and made the 10-minute drive from our short-term rental in Kapa’a to the Kauai chocolate tour at Lydgate farms . We were greeted with smiling faces and an all-you-can-eat bowl of crack-yourself Macadamia nuts (which I had to keep stopping 5-year-old D from serving to the chickens).

The Lydgate farm tour was amazing. It was run by an energetic, and enthusiastic guide who shared her passion for the agro-tourism industry with us. The kids were kept engaged not only by her personality but also by the hands-on exploration of the amazing fruit and cocoa trees that fill the Lydgate Farms property. There were copious amounts of local Kauai fruit to taste paired with useful information on the best Kauai markets to buy them and how much they should cost.

Our bellies were happy with the amazing selection of local Hawaiian fruit when we reached the cocoa trees and chocolate tent for our Lydgate Farms chocolate tasting. This is where young kids in Kauai may start getting restless, just like D did. C was more than happy to sit through the chocolate tasting and placed himself last in the line of seats so that all the chocolate bowls would end with him. D however, was more than happy to wander off to the nearby kids’ tent to spend his time coloring and playing lego. It’s pretty awesome that this company had taken the time to think of their little visitors enough to provide this.

A visit to Lydgate Farms is high on our list of Kauai things to do for families. The family is very passionate not only about their product but about the island as well. We left happy, full, and with a much greater appreciation for the flavors of Kauai and the agro-tourism that helps keep it so popular. You can read all about our Kauai chocolate tour here .

Kayak To The Fern Grotto Or Combine It With The Smith’s Garden Luau

Kauai is the only Hawaiian Island that has a navigable river. And what a river it is! The Wailua river snakes through the interior of the island and has helped support the indigenous people as well as shape some of the most spectacular landscapes of Kauai. Much of this is now protected by the Wailua State Park.

The Fern Grotto is a picture-perfect lava cave decked in ferns and other plant life with a sprinkling waterfall that pours steadily over the entrance from the cliffs above. The Fern Grotto has become a popular place for weddings, engagements, and special occasions due to it’s near-perfect tropical paradise vibe. However, be warned.

Many of the photos you see of the Kauai Fern Grotto show people exploring the cave and walking among the ferns. This is no longer possible. Hurricane Iwa and the closing of a nearby sugar plant have caused some deterioration of the attraction and now it can only be viewed from a platform below.

There are two ways to visit the Fern Grotto, the first is to rent kayaks at Kayak Kauai near the mouth of the river and make your way up the river stopping at waterfalls and taking in the stunning scenery along the way. The second is to join Smith’s Motorboat Tours or the Smith’s Island Luau . We knew that we’d be very tired after our first day in Kauai, so we opted to skip the Luau (we would be experiencing one on Maui) and just do the motorboat tour. In retrospect,

I wish that we had done the kayak journey. The river is calm, and the ability to stop at will and see the sites, as well as enjoy the Fern Grotto without 60 other people jammed onto the small platform would have been worth the extra effort.

One very nice part about the Smith’s tour was the onboard entertainment that included dancing and music both at the Fern Grotto and during the return boat tour. As we were on the last boat tour of the day, nearly everyone on board was on their way to the Smith’s Garden Luau afterward. In fact, we were the only ones who took the $25 tour just for the Fern Grotto alone.

Kilauea Lighthouse And Wildlife Refuge

Kilauea is a former plantation town. It is a really popular destination for sunsets (you can read about that further down) and the famous Kilauea Lighthouse. This gorgeous white Kauai lighthouse is perched at the top of a towering bluff. The Kilauea Lighthouse is the northernmost point of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands. The Lighthouse is shown in the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch , and the sequel, Stitch! The Movie .

You can access the lighthouse through the Kilauea Wildlife Refuge for $10 per person (children 15 and under are free). The park is closed on Sundays and Mondays and after 5:00 PM. However, if you arrive after hours, you can still get a great view of the lighthouse and many of the seabirds from the parking area.

Mountain Tubing With Kauai Backcountry

Our second morning exploring Kauai for kids took us to the mountains. It took us deep into the property of America Online founder (You’ve Got Mail!), Steve Chase. He purchased a huge swath of the interior of Kauai with the idea of keeping it relatively free from development.

Since then, Kauai Backcountry Adventures has begun offering an incredible mountain tubing adventure that pours through an old sugar cane plantation for several miles. It is definitely one of our top things to do in Kauai with kids. You can read all about our Kauai tubing adventure here .

Our day started out with a short drive from Kapa’a to Hanamaulu. Here, we registered with the helpful Kauai Backcountry team before being fitted for gloves and helmets. To help kill the time before we left there were a few games of cornhole setup. This was appreciated since it helped all the different mountain tubing families bond a little before we left for the adventure.

Before long though, we were loaded into an open-air truck for the bumpy drive into the Kauai interior. We rode through farm fields filled with cows, who sometimes blocked the road. Then we arrived at a spectacular overlook of Mount Waialeale Crater, one of the rainiest spots on earth.

After a brief stop, we continued to our starting point on the banks of a small river. We had a short safety briefing and loaded into our tubes and began the tour through the old irrigation ditches that used to provide water to the different areas of the farm. The water is chilly, and we were very glad that we packed a wetsuit for D , who was quite comfortable for the trip. C, who opted not to wear his wetsuit, was shivering a bit by the time we finished. But cool or not, this Kauai adventure was worth it.

We zipped down small waterfalls and through narrow paths through the plantation. There were several tunnels, one of them was a mile long. Hearing about how these tunnels were hand-dug over 10-years was fascinating. There was a lot of spinning, a lot of bumping into one another, and for those who might get motion-sickness, I recommend a dose of Dramamine or Gravol  before you go. But the views along the way are spectacular, and the warm Kauai sunshine is a great pairing to the cool waters for this family-friendly Kauai activity.

Shipwreck Beach

Shipwreck Beach in the resort town of Poipu is a popular beach for locals who love surfing and body surfing. It would be a postcard-perfect destination if it wasn’t for the sprawling Grand Hyatt Hotel that takes up most of the inland view. The surf of Shipwreck Beach is pretty strong (causing the end of the wooden ship that sank off of its shores), so swimming here is not advised.

But Shipwreck Beach is a great place for exploring, beachcombing, and watching the beautiful Kauai sunsets. But the real draw is as a starting point for the Makawehi Point hiking trail to Maha Ulepu Beach.

Hanapepe Swing Bridge

The historic town of Hanapepe was an easy stop on our way to exploring some of the best beaches for kids in Kauai. This small town is a “blink and you miss it” destination. But, making the turn off of the Kaumualii Highway is worth the short detour. The town of Hanapepe is dotted with small cafes, art studios, and handmade furniture shops. But the real draw is the historic Hanapepe Swing Bridge that crosses the river to Hanapepe Valley.

The Hanapepe swinging bridge is a popular spot for those in Kauai with kids. It offers a fun combination of adventure and thrills. The bridge bucks and sways along with the movement of those walking across. There isn’t much to see once you make your way across the swinging bridge in Hanapepe, but it’s about the journey, not the destination!

Salt Ponds Beach

Salt Ponds Beach, just past Hanapepe, is considered by locals and visitors to be one of the best beaches in Kauai for Keiki. The calm water and somewhat protected from the surf. The only time swimming isn’t safe for families is during periods of high surf. There are washrooms available here, and many locals camp here during weekends and holidays.

What makes Salt Ponds Beach truly unique in Kauai with kids since it has the only natural salt ponds in Hawaii. During the summer, seawater is pumped into containers and allowed to evaporate (similar, but not quite as beautiful a process as we saw in Maras in the Sacred Valley of Peru ). This drives much of the sea salt industry in Kauai.

Glass Beach

Glass Beach in Port Allen was our stop after returning from Salt Ponds Beach and Hanapepe. After exploring the sea glass beach in Bermuda, we weren’t sure what to expect from here. But, it turned into one of the most fascinating, beautiful, and unique experiences during our search for things to do in Kauai with kids.

Glass beach itself is not the spectacle that it once was. It was once filled with worn-down sea glass dropped into the ocean by the nearby Port Allen recycling station. Now, it has been picked clean by both locals and tourists alike. There are signs asking visitors to not remove the sea glass from the beach. But from what I saw, it is largely ignored. There was still enough glass to make the visit fun for our kids in Kauai. They spent an hour digging through the sand and around the rocks looking for the perfect pieces. At the end of the day, we found some “secret” places in the sand to bury them so that we could find them on our next visit to Kauai with kids.

But what made Glass Beach Kauai truly unique was the area near the bluffs. At the top of the bluffs is an old Hawaiian cemetery with graves dating back as far as the nineteenth century. It is an eery, yet strangely beautiful place full of graves and crypts, many of them from Hawaiian and Japanese residents. Many of the crypts and tombstones have been worn and broken over the years, yet there is something uniquely fascinating about the location.

The third unique thing about Glass Beach is the bluffs themselves. By following a small path at the end of the parking area you can reach a worn trail to the bottom of the bluffs. This where you’ll see a small beach among the rocks. It’s a great place to watch the sunset. Our kids loved exploring the small tide pools that are packed with small fish and crabs.

If you choose to visit here, do be careful and stay back from the ocean side of the rocks. The waves can crash hard and unexpectedly against the rock walls and it would be easy to fall into the water. The best views are from further back on the rocks where things are much safer anyways.

Waimea Canyon Drive To Na Pali

Our Waimea Canyon drive was an epic day that is fully deserving of its own post. And that will be delivered in a few weeks. But this spectacular drive is one of the coolest ways to spend a day in Kauai with kids. Our day started early, Christina’s parents had joined us late the night before and would be joining us for the trip. And it’s good that they did. Because they kept us from biting off more than we could chew on this classic Kauai adventure.

The road to Na Pali along the Waimea Canyon route starts inside the town of Waimea. From there it winds its way for 36 miles (60 km) and up to an elevation of 4,000 ft. The drive took us through Waimea Canyon State Park , Ku’la Natural Area Reserve, and Koke’e State Park. It culminated at the Pu’u O Kila Lookout over the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park.

Along the drive, there are countless places to stop and explore or just enjoy the view. In fact, there are so many places to stop along the Waimea Canyon drive that you will need to skip a lot of them. Otherwise, you will have to make the long drive back in the dark. But the Waimea canyon route will treat you to gorgeous canyon vistas, waterfalls, both epic and quaint, and of course, your first taste of the Na Pali coastline. This coastline may be among the most beautiful in the world.

Waimea Canyon is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. And, unlike many that try to bear that mantel, Waimea comes close to pulling that off. The canyon is truly epic. And the views of the clouds casting shadows over the depths, and the cascading waterfalls pouring into its depths is truly magical. You can read all about the best stops on the road to Hana here .

Na Pali Coast Tour

Currently, the Na Pali coast hiking trails are closed. You can still experience this mesmerizing and nearly untouched section of Kauai coastline. The two most popular ways of experiencing the Na Pali coast is on a coastal boat cruise and on a Kauai helicopter tour. The helicopter tours are often combined with a helicopter tour of Waimea Canyon.

We opted for a private boat tour of the coast. This would allow us to enter some of the amazing sea caves on the Na Pali coast. And while getting those views was truly spectacular, our day went from calm to windy and wavy pretty quickly. In our small boat, we needed to make a retreat from the close-up views. We ended up with something a little further out in order to enjoy the experience a bit more. In retrospect, I think I would have gone with the helicopter experience. There are still some companies that do doors-off tours for better photography.

The Na Pali coastline was a truly special experience. We had the opportunity to see where many of the Hawaiian villages were located prior to contact with outsiders. You can picture the fantastic lifestyles of these villages and the farming and fishing that was done on this breathtaking stretch of waterfront.

Hanalei Beach

After recovering from our Na Pali Kauai adventures, we made the trip around the island to the only area of Kaui we had yet to visit, the famous Kauai North Shore. We made it as far as Hanalei Beach before more road closures forced us to halt our progress. But, Hanalei Beach was a pretty amazing place to stop for a while. We spent some time splashing in the waves and watching another great Kauai sunset.

The Hanalei Beach pier makes for a popular spot for fishing. The tall bluffs surrounding the bay break the waves nicely, making it one of the best spots to bring keiki swimming. The long, gentle waves also make Hanalei Beach a popular spot for beginner surfers.

Picnic And Play At Lydgate Park

Lydgate Park is a very popular place for local and visiting families in Kauai. There are large fields for flying kites or playing frisbee. But what makes it one of the best things to do in Kauai with kids is the 16,000 ft Kalamani Playground. Families could easily spend an entire day at Lydgate Beach Park. Activities such as playing, swimming in the man-made pools, and taking cat naps under the towering palm trees are wonderful.

Spend A Day Snorkeling The Coral Reefs

Kauai is a perfect spot for young snorkelers. We did most of our snorkeling in Maui later on in our Hawaii family vacation. But in Kauai, there were loads of places where we could have easily explored the waters. Some of the best spots for gentle snorkeling in Kauai are

• Lydgate Beach Park has calm waters in man-made rock, enclosed pools.
• Poipu Beach Park has a peaceful and shallow lagoon with many species of fish.
• Salt Pond Beach is very popular with locals. It has many species of fish and some great rock formations.
• Anini Beach has the longest reef in the Hawaiian Islands. During the summer, the waters here are some of the calmest on the island. And it’s one of the best places to see sea turtles.

Eat At All The Food Trucks

There’s no getting around this. Food trucks are by far the best way to eat in Hawaii. And Kauai is one of the best places for amazing food trucks. Whether you are after a coffee, shaved ice, shrimp, Mexican, Filipino, or Hawaiian food, you are almost guaranteed to find countless options during your search for food in Kauai for kids. Stop at them all if you can. But, if you can’t, some of the most popular places for food trucks in Kauai are:

• Kapa’a has some great options, and even hosts a food truck night on Fridays. Make sure to check out La Taco Feliz downtown and 3 Girls Local Grill for some Hawaiian/Filipino fusion.
• Lawai has some great options in a small business park outside of town. Here you’ll find The Fresh Shave, one of the best-shaved ice trucks on the island.
• Koloa not only has one of the coolest historic towns, but it also has some great food trucks. Our favorite place to eat in Koloa however, isn’t a food truck, but it’s about the size of one. Make sure to grab a Poke Bowl from Koloa Fish Market.
• Waimea is home to the original Shrimp Station. Make sure you give the garlic shrimp dish a try. It’s a mouthwatering treat.

Spend An Evening (or many) Watching The Kauai Sunset

There’s a reason that every second item on this list mentions the Kauai sunset. They are amazing. So our final item is our favorite places to catch the sunset in Kauai with kids:

• Kilauea has one of the most spectacular sunsets. Our favorite spot is known mostly by the locals. You’ll pass it just before you reach the Kilauea Lighthouse. There is a horse-filled farm looking out onto the bluffs. You’ll have to work for parking, as many locals arrive early to hang out and often get the prime spots.
• Hanalei Beach , specifically near the pier is just gorgeous. Ending your day here offers the perfect combination of a sunset swim for the kids and a magical view for the adults.
• Kalalau Lookout at the tip of Waimea Canyon has spectacular views if you get there on a clear day (which can be a challenge). Although it doesn’t face the sun, the colorful skies give off an absolutely mesmerizing effect.

Looks like an amazing (× infinity) place! I have always wanted to visit Hawaii but only ever considered Oahu... You just changed my mind!

Hi Josh! Oahu is a pretty cool place. I especially love the Hanauma Bay and the shrimp shacks on the North Shore. But I highly recommend checking out Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Each of the Hawaiian islands is truly unique.

Isn't Kauai amazing and beautiful?! We went pre-kids and fell in love with it. Looks like there's so much to do with kids that we'll have to come back now that we have two of them! Also - I love that the chicken made it into one of you first photos haha. There were SO many of them there EVERYWHERE!!

• Waipoo Falls – Located in Waimea Canyon State Park on the West Side of Kauai, Waipoo Falls is a popular waterfall that can be reached via a moderate hiking trail. The trail, known as the Canyon Trail, is approximately 3 miles round trip and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. The trail offers scenic views of Waimea Canyon and leads to a lookout point overlooking the 800-foot Waipoo Falls.
• Wailua Falls – Located in the Wailua River State Park on the East Side of Kauai, Wailua Falls is a picturesque waterfall that can be easily accessed from a lookout point. There is no official trail to the base of the falls, but adventurous visitors can hike down the steep and slippery slope to get a closer view of the falls. Exercise caution and be aware of the conditions before attempting to hike down.
• Opaekaa Falls – Also located in the Wailua River State Park, Opaekaa Falls is another easily accessible waterfall on Kauai. The hike is approximately 2 miles round trip and can be muddy and slippery, requiring crossing the river and navigating through dense foliage. The effort is rewarded with a picturesque waterfall and a refreshing swimming hole. You can also take a kayak tour to Secret Falls .
• Ho’opii Falls – Located near Kapaa on the East Side of Kauai, Ho’opii Falls is a series of two waterfalls that can be reached via a short and relatively easy hike. The trailhead is located at the end of Kapahi Road, and the hike is approximately 1-mile round trip. The trail passes through a lush forest and leads to two beautiful waterfalls, making it a great option for families and beginners.

11 Fun Activities to Do With Kids in Kauai

Boogie-boarding in the surf, riding a mahogany train through an old sugar cane plantation, digging in the sand on a perfect beach, dancing the hula at a luau, riding a boat to a fern grotto, eating shave ice, chasing rainbows and viewing the Na Pali Coast by boat, air or overlook are all very doable, memorable activities with kids on Kauai.

Whether you are trying to pick the best Hawaiian Island to visit with your family, or you already have settled on Kauai (great choice, by the way), here are 11 kid-friendly activities on the oldest and greenest of all of the Islands in Hawaii: Kauai.

1. Visit Kid-Friendly Beaches

This is clearly a no-brainer in Hawaii, but one of the best things to do with kids in Kauai is to simply go to the beach. There are many good ones to pick from, but here are some of our favorites.

Poipu Beach

Just a five-minute drive from the Grand Hyatt Kauai , this beach has lifeguards on duty every day, is known for calmer waters and has a playground for kids.

Because we visited during swell, some larger waves came in from time to time while we were there, but we had a ton of fun closer to shore.

Hanalei Bay

On the north side of Kauai, the crescent-shaped Hanalei Bay is known for surfing lessons, boogie-boarding and rainbows on this rainier side of the island. Waves can get larger here in the winter, but in the summer, it was perfect for school-aged kids to ride the waves.

Lydgate Beach

Lydgate gets very high marks families in Kauai with its two man-made protected pools and lifeguards on duty. In addition to being a safe swimming spot, Lydgate also has amazing play areas, good parking and nice facilities.

The park area is so large that we had a hard time finding the swimming area at first. There are two large play structures, one near the camping area and pretty far from the protected swimming areas. The second play area (that we eventually found after walking in circles and asking campers) is right across from the larger parking lot and protected pools.

2. Ride a Train Through Kilohana Plantation

The 40-minute train ride through the 105-acre former sugar cane plantation is fun for adults and kids (and look in a rental car magazine for discount coupons). Prices are regularly about $20 for adults and $14 for kids 3–12, under 3 are free. Be sure and check the schedule for departures , but many are on the hour.

While on the train ride, they give some history of the plantation and point out the various types of produce that are growing on the plantation grounds. They even use some of the produce in the on-site bar and restaurant.

On the ride, you stop to feed the animals -- but be prepared, the pigs are not very friendly. The goats and donkey are much nicer representatives of their species!

After the train ride, head to the main building for a relaxing plantation house environment and one of the best mai tais you will find. In an adorably Hawaiian farm-to-bar approach, they even use sugar cane, fruit and other items grown on the grounds to make the drinks when possible.

3. Take a Helicopter Tour

You can take sightseeing helicopter rides on Kauai from places such as Lihue or the north side and we've done both. Some of Kauai's most amazing sights are hard to get to, so consider something such as the one-hour tour around Kauai offered by Island Helicopter Tours that starts at about $145 per person. They also offer a more expensive "Jurassic Falls" tour that last about 20 minutes longer and includes a landing at the famed Manawaiopuna Falls that is featured in the movie "Jurassic Park."

We went on the first flight of the day and that proved to be a wise decision in terms of weather and cloud cover that developed later in the day (picture above taken after our flight). My daughter flew with us at both 3 and 4 years old and loved it both times.

The flight was amazing and the scenery was breathtaking. It was a little scary at times for those not used to the motion of the helicopter, but those moments were worth the payoff.

A slightly less expensive way to see the island is via Wings Over Kauai that starts at $135 for adults, 50% off for children 3–5 and free for those in laps and under 3. They fly small planes instead of helicopters, but basically show you the same sights around the island.

4. Na Pali Coast Boat Trip

Other than via helicopter, another great way to see the Na Pali Coast is via boats from companies like Captain Andy's . With these boat tours you can snorkel, see the sunset, eat dinner or have a day expedition on the Na Pali Coast. The prices vary, but seem to be mostly between $100–$150 per person, depending on the tour you select. If your kid is good on a boat, this could be a ton of fun. Just be aware you really have to keep a close eye on younger kids and those under a certain age are not permitted. For example, on Captain Andy's sunset cruise ($95 adults, $75 kids), those under 3 are not allowed.

5. Na Aina Kai Botanical Garden

I haven't made it here yet, but the description of the family tour sounds awesome. For $35 for adults and $20 for children, you feed fish in the Ka'ula Lagoon, walk through the full-sized hedge maze and play in the Children's Garden with a rubber tree treehouse, tropical jungle with bridges, tunnels, slides and a kid-sized railroad train. The gardens also offer a kid's day one Saturday per month with admission just $10. Be sure and make reservations in advance for the family tour.

6. Horseback Riding at Silver Falls Ranch

Choose from a variety of horseback tours, including the $124 ride to Silver Falls where you get to take a refreshing dip after riding your horse with a view of the Makaleha mountain range. There are also longer, shorter and private rides available.

While the stated minimum age is 7, give them a call if you have a younger rider, as there may be options using lead lines or transport on a 4-wheel-drive gator.

7. Smith Family Garden Luau and Fern Grotto River Ride

My favorite luau on Kauai is found at Smith Gardens. Doing business in the area since the 1940s, the Smith Family has a few offerings including not only the luau, but a ride down the Wailua River to the fern grotto ($25 adults, $12.50 for kids).

The boat takes you to a rainforest where there is a short walk to the Fern Grotto. Traditional Hawaiian songs are performed for you at the Fern Grotto, as well as on the boat ride by the Smith family.

There are indoor restrooms at the boat dock and be sure to get there a little early to get a good seat on the boat. While the boat tour was a fun thing to try once, the Smith Family Luau I look forward to on most visits to Kauai. Located on a 30-acre cultural and botanical garden, you will find peacocks, bridges, a tram tour, ponds and all sorts of plants. It is a fun place to explore, so allow extra time before the official 6pm start of the luau.

The official start of the luau is a welcome and unearthing of the pig, followed by all you can enjoy drinks while folks find their seats.

Pro tip: "Reserve" a table before the luau starts by turning the chair down and unfolding the napkin over the chair. If you are really hungry or simply eat slowly, ask a staff member which tables get to visit the buffet first -- about 20 to 25 minutes of eating time can separate the first and last table.

The luau was very family-friendly with lots of children in attendance. About 15 minutes after cocktail hour begins, the buffet is open to one set of tables at a time.

We especially love the Hawaiian sweet potatoes, beef teriyaki, Kalua pork and chicken adobo.

During dinner, there is music on the stage and some audience members may be called up to join in the hula fun. Years ago, they used to call all children up on stage, but on our most recent visit, they only called up those celebrating a birthday, so plan accordingly.

After dinner, the events move to another part of the grounds for the evening performance. Because this starts to run later into the evening, I don't recommend doing this on one of your first couple of nights in Hawaii due to the time change. The evening show is worth watching and is comprised of performances highlighting different cultures that make up the Hawaiian Islands.

Like most luaus, this wasn't inexpensive, but it's a downright bargain compared to prices somewhere like Disney's Aulani, where the luau can be double these amounts. At the Smith Family Luau, adults are $98, kids 7–13 are $30 and 3–6 year olds are $19. Note that the charge coded as entertainment on my Citi Premier® Card and not as dining, but at least I still earned 2 points per dollar.

8. Take a Shelter Dog on a Field Trip

If you have older kids, are missing your puppy cuddles back home or just want to spend a day exploring Kauai with a dog in need, visit the Kauai Humane Society and take an adoptable shelter dog "on a field trip" for the day. The shelter provides all the supplies for your adventure, including an adopt me vest, leash and more, so you can head off with the pup and enjoy Mahaulepu Beach, hike Sleeping Giant or take off to one of their other top recommended dog-friendly spots. In return, the shelter just requests a $25 donation .

Of course, some visitors fall in love with their pets for the day and end up adopting them, which is pretty much a win-win situation. If that happens, it's probably a good time to brush up on the rules and fees for flying pets . Also know that restrictions from Hawaii can be more strict -- for example, Alaska Airlines does not accept checked animals to/from Hawaii in February due to seasonal headwinds, Hawaiian Airlines doesn't accept checked or carry-on animals to Boston or New York, etc.

9. Walk on the Swinging Bridge

A fun stop on the way back from Waimea Canyon is the Hanapepe swinging bridge. The original bridge was originally built in the early 1900s so that residents could cross the river, but it was restored and reinforced after Hurricane Iniki left its mark in 1992.

I would not make a trek to this part of the island just to walk on this swaying bridge, but I'd certainly make the 10-minute stop while you are in the area. We also really enjoyed some of the town's art shops, a drink from Little Fish Coffee and a bag of cookies from Popo's Cookies, all just a two-minute walk from the bridge.

10. Canyons, Rainbows and Views

Most kids like to do rather than see, but they still shouldn't miss a few standouts. Or rather, you shouldn't miss them just because you brought the kids. As long as no one gets too carsick on winding roads, take the drive out to Waimea Canyon first thing one morning, but limit your stops to avoid drawing things out too long.

The Waimea Canyon lookout has some bathrooms and even some very limited parking lot concessions, so certainly stop there.

But, I also recommend heading up to the Kalalau Lookout a few more miles up as you can see the Na Pali Coast from there. There's also some flat areas for the kids to run around, or just take a rest while you try to figure out where the ocean meets the sky.

No really -- it can be hard to tell.

Kauai has a number of great waterfalls, but many aren't easy for kids to access. However, just north of Lihue is a great pair of falls you can see without hiking. This double-falls, called Wailua Falls, is viewable from the road. There is a small parking lot (that was jam-packed), but once you figure out where to park, you can then walk for less than a minute and watch the falls with your kiddos while looking for rainbows.

11. Eat All the Shave Ice

Listing the best shave ice in Kauai is like searching for the best pizza in New York, the best taco in San Diego or the best macaroon in Paris. It's fun to try to find the best, but the debate will never be settled. Some popular options to put on your taste test include: JoJo's, Uncle's, Ono's, Wailua, Waikomo and Wishing Well in Hanalei.

Just be aware that Wishing Well closes at 5pm -- we got there five minutes too late and missed out on their organic, house-made flavors and fruits from local farms. (Missing this is almost enough reason to return to Kauai from what I've been told!)

Kauai is not only my favorite island in Hawaii, but a favorite of my kid's too. Sure, they love playing at the great resort pools found at Grand Hyatt Kauai, Westin Princeville and beyond, but it's not (that) hard to drag them away from the resorts as they love exploring this gorgeous island as much as we do. Where to Find the Things to Do on Kauai

In my opinion, Kauai is the easiest island to navigate among the eight main Hawaiian Islands for two reasons. 

First, the island closely resembles a circle. Areas of the island are referred to by the compass points. See the map of areas on Kauai below.

Second, Kauai has a mountainous interior so the roads follow the coast. Kuhio Highway (Route 56) starts on the North Shore and ends in Lihue. Then, Kaumuali’i Highway (Route 50) will take you south and to the furthest western point. There are no roads along the Napali Coast, hence the coast is famous for sunset and dinner cruises and snorkel trips .

Things to Do on Kauai: North Shore

Kauai is nicknamed The Garden Isle and the North Shore is a big reason why. With lush jungles, stunning cliffs (pali in Hawaiian), and beautiful beaches this is a popular place to stay and for activities. But the weather can get dicey.

The North Shore of Kauai is on the windward side of the island, meaning it receives more rain and higher surf during the winter months. You can still do many of the activities below from October to March, but plan to experience rain and check ocean conditions before you head out.

1. Napali Coast Wilderness Area

When you see pictures of Kauai, they’re usually showing the Napali Coast. Napali Coast State Wilderness Park covers the northwest coast of Kauai and is relatively untouched natural beauty. The cathedral cliffs along the ocean are remote, rugged, and romantic for honeymooners to hikers.

The coast is full of sea caves, waterfalls, and ancient Hawaiian villages. While most people explore this area via boat (see our favorite NaPali Coast boat tours here ), you can hike into the wilderness area with a permit .

I was fortunate to hike the Kalalau Trail (11 miles), swim to the Honopu Arch, and sleep on Kalalau Beach with friends years ago. It was one of my most memorable Kauai vacations. But exhausting.

2. The Best Beach on Kauai

Kauai has many pristine beaches, but Ke’e Beach is our favorite beach on Kauai . Located at the end of the Kuhio Highway, Ha’ena State Park is home to working lo’i kalo (taro patches), heiau (temple), trailheads for the Kalalau Trail and Hanakapi’ai Beach and waterfall, and the popular Ke’e Beach.

Ke’e Beach is a small bay tucked under towering cliffs. With a lifeguard on duty, showers, and restrooms, the beach is great for kids . The reef makes for a natural lagoon for snorkeling and swimming. But during the winter the high surf makes this beach a no-go. See our 7 Best Beaches on Kauai in the Winter for safer spots to visit.

Due to the popularity of Ke’e Beach, entry and parking reservations are required for access to the state park. Shuttle reservations are available.

You can hike a portion of the Kalalau Trail with your Ha’ena State Park entry fee. Hiking from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapi’ai Beach is 2 miles. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the coast and a sandy beach during the summer (not a good swimming beach due to strong currents). The waterfall hike is 8 miles roundtrip.

3. Kauai’s Best Botanical Garden

Limahuli Garden & Preserve is an ecological preserve built to protect the diverse plant and animal life in the valley. Settled for the last 1,500 centuries, the valley is home to native forests, endangered animals, and archaeological complexes. Visiting Limahuli is part of having an authentic Hawaii experience .

We love this place for its tranquility and for seeing the workings of the ancient lo’i kalo (taro patches). Take a self-guided tour of the grounds (about 1.5 hours), appreciate the history, and enjoy a day in this jungle paradise. Learn more about Limahuli Gardens here .

4. Ha’ena Beach

Ha’ena Beach , despite the name, is not part of Ha’ena State Park so no reservation is required. The beach park is located immediately off the Kuhio Highway. The long sandy beach is known for swimming (during calm conditions) and beach walks under the pali (cliffs).

There is a lifeguard on duty, showers, a snack shack (trailer) with fresh fruit, and restrooms.

As this is a popular North Shore beach, the small parking lot fills up fast and spills over onto the road. Come early for parking. Many people park here to walk down the beach to the popular snorkel spot of Tunnels (Makua Beach).

5. Maniniholo Dry Cave

Across the street from Ha’ena Beach , come explore the Maniniholo Dry Cave . The low-ceiling cave is an expansive room with a sand floor.

The cave was formed, per the legend, that Polynesian settlers were chasing the Menehune from Waimea Canyon. The Menehune escaped into a tunnel that connected to the North Shore. Upon making their escape through the tunnel, they collapsed the ceiling making the dry cave.

6. Hanalei Bay

Hanalei Bay has nearly two miles of beach and in the summer the water is as calm as can be. 

To swim at Hanalei Beach, we prefer to park on the east side of Hanalei Bay, near the Hanalei Pier and Black Pot Beach. From here you can get a great view of the bay and play on the pier. Directions below are to the public parking lot.

Beware in the winter, waves here get rough. There may be some days that the beach is closed and swimming here (especially with kids) is really only ideal in the summer.

7. Hanalei Town

The town of Hanalei is built along Hanalei Bay, so you’ll have all the amenities you need at your fingertips: food, shave ice, and SUP rentals. 

Hanalei Town is a great place to shop, have breakfast or lunch, and explore the town. Some of our favorite places to grab a bite are the following:

8. Hanalei Bridge

Originally built in 1912, the through-truss bridge is a replica of the original but still has all the charm. Spanning 113 feet across the Hanalei River, you will cross the one-lane bridge when entering and leaving Hanalei Town. 

Due to the popularity of Hanalei Town, delays on the one-lane bridge are becoming more common. We will see if they install a traffic light (it would be the first in Hanalei) to help ease the congestion.

9. Hanalei Lookout

A quick stop when passing through Princeville on the way to Hanalei is Hanalei Valley Lookout. Pull over across the street from the Foodland grocery store to take in the grandeur of Kauai. 

The lookout is a panoramic view of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge and Kawaikini mountain range. The taro field patchwork with the mountains in the background is my favorite view on Kauai.

10. Anini Beach

Another North Shore Beach that made our 7 Best Kid-Friendly Kauai Beaches is Anini Beach .

When you first drive to Anini beach in Kilauea, you might not be sure you’re heading to the correct spot. But when you finally arrive, you realize that this beach is beautiful. 

White sand beach with calm, shallow water, this beach is great for kids in the summer. There’s even a big grassy beach park area, so if your little one gets tired of the sand, they can head to the grass to play.

One note: bring your own food and beverages. Unlike some of the other beaches that have food trucks or restaurants nearby, Anini beach is a bit secluded. See our video below for more details on Anini Beach.

11. Kilauea Point Lighthouse

Located past the village of Kilauea is the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Many come for the short walk to the historic Kilauea Point Lighthouse built in 1913. As you are perched on 180-foot high cliffs, the views of the coast are wonderful but this place is really about the wildlife. 

Watch red-footed boobies. The birds soar along the cliffs for a stunning experience. Hopefully get to see Hawaii’s state bird, the nene. Reservations are required to enter the refuge.

Things to Do on Kauai: East Side

Nicknamed the Royal Coconut Coast, from Wailua to Kealia, for the large stands of coconut trees and because this area was the playground for Hawaiian royalty. 

Now, you can explore local towns, go inland for waterfalls accessible by car, and explore the beaches. This is also a popular area to stay in due to its central location on Kauai.

12. Kapa’a Town

Don’t make the mistake of driving through Kapa’a on the way to North Shore without stopping.

Kapa’a is full of coffee shops, like Mokihana Coffee (formerly Small Town Coffee) and Java Kai , restaurants, and shopping. The cute town located along the ocean is worth checking out. You’d never guess it is the most populous town on the island.

If you do nothing else here, at least grab a plate lunch from Pono Market .

13. Kapa’a Food Truck Parks

Kapa’a has the most food trucks per capita on Kauai. Is that an official stat? Absolutely not but there are a lot of food trucks littered around the town. 

The two main food truck parks are located near Kapa’a Beach Park and All Saint’s Church. But don’t miss the standalone trucks mentioned in our Ultimate Kauai Food Truck Guide .

14. Kapa’a Beach Bike Trail

Don’t miss the multi-use path that follows the coast along Kapa’a Town. Explore the beaches, enjoy views of the coast, and just take in the sun. You can rent beach cruisers and e-bikes in Kapa’a for a few hours to enjoy a relaxing ride.

We rented our bikes from Hele on Kauai in central Kapa’a. They are located 30-seconds off the beach path.

15. Kayak and Hike to Secret Falls

Perhaps no longer a secret waterfall, Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) is only accessible via a kayak tour down the Wailua River . Land the kayaks to go on a 1.5-mile roundtrip hike to the large waterfall. Such an experience is one of those Things You Can Only Do in Hawaii type experiences.

This easy kayak and hike tour is a great way to explore the Wailua River. Perhaps stay the evening to see the Fern Grotto and one of the best luaus on Kauai – Smith’s Family Luau .

16. ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls

One of Kauai’s largest waterfalls is easily accessible by car. Make the short drive from Kapa’a Town to ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls, a roadside lookout. The falls are 151 feet tall and 40 feet wide.

Across the street from the falls is a lookout of the Wailua River and valley. Watch kayakers journey up the class 0 river.

17. Kid-Friendly Beach: Lydgate Beach Park

This is one of our favorite beaches on Kauai for swimming . Lydgate Beach Park is a long beach that can have rough surf for swimming, especially during the winter, but there are the Lydgate Park Pools. 

The pools on the north end of the beach are protected from the waves by a large stone wall. The water is calm, there are large fish inside the pools for easy snorkeling, and the beach is sandy. There are lifeguards on duty, picnic tables, and lots of parking.

There is also a large, community playground called Kamalani Playground across from the pools.

18. Wailua Falls

Another Kauai waterfall that is easily accessible by car, Wailua Falls is located off the road on the south end of the Wailua River. The falls cascade into two streams that drop over 80 feet into a pool.

The best viewing is along the road, just before the parking lot for the falls. The size of the stream is dictated by the rainfall uphill. During our last visit, Kauai was hit by a tropical storm so the waterfall was roaring. 

Wailua Falls is known in pop culture as the opening scene in the television show Fantasy Island . Kauai is famous for most of the filming of Jurassic Park and other movies. You can go on a guided tour of Kauai’s famous movie and TV scenes with pickup at your hotel.

19. Mountain Tubing Adventure

After a 4WD ride through a jungle, hop on a tube to float down a 100-year-old, hand-dug plantation canal system that will take you through caves and small waterfalls. Get wet and have a blast!

This tour is Kauai’s only tubing adventure through irrigation canals. Read more about the Mountain Tubing Adventure here .

Things to Do on Kauai: South Shore

South Shore Kauai is the most popular place to stay on Kauai. With many things to do on Kauai out your backdoor and the best weather on the island, it is no surprise visitors park themselves near Poipu.

The South Shore gets the best weather due to being on the leeward side of Kauai, or the dry side. You can expect less rain and slightly warmer temperatures than Princeville and Hanalei ( find Kauai weather data here ). Also, waves are smaller during the winter on the South Shore compared to North Shore.

See our Princeville vs Poipu Where to Stay article if you’re on the fence about where to stay on Kauai. South Shore Kauai is also home to many of our 7 Best Kauai Honeymoon Resorts . It’s also just a quick 25 minute drive from Lihue airport, so you go from plane to resort pretty quickly.

20. Kauai Plantation Railway

Located just outside Lihue is the Kilohana Plantation , a 105-acre historic plantation. If you’re looking for something for the whole family, take a ride on the Kauai Plantation Train . 

The 2.5-mile track (40-minute long tour) is a conductor-narrated journey through the history of the plantation. See plantation crops like sugar cane and taro plus tropical plants like mango, banana, pineapple, and others. Then, stop to get out to feed pigs, goats, sheep, and a donkey. Trains depart five to seven times per day.

For the parents, Koloa Rum is on the site for tastings and dining at Plantation House and Mahiko Lounge. But the luau is perhaps the main attraction.

21. Luau Kalamaku

​Located next to Kauai Plantation Train in Kilohana Plantation is Luau Kalamaku. The luau centers on a theatrical show of a family voyaging across the Pacific from Tahiti to Hawaii. Located in a large outdoor pavilion, the theater show with Tahitian drumming, Samoan fire dancing, and Hawaiian hula make for an immersive experience.

22. Historic Koloa Town

Established in 1835, the old plantation town is a walk down memory lane. Visit the Old Koloa Town Shops in plantation-era style, see the Old Sugar Mill Memorial, and have a local plate lunch.

We visit Koloa Town to grab food before hitting Poipu Beach in the south. Grab a plate lunch at Koloa Fish Market or one of the many food trucks. There are two food truck parks with award-winning food trucks in Koloa, see our Kauai Food Truck Guide for details.

Shave ice! South Shore Kauai is full of the best shave ice on Kauai. Visit The Fresh Shave or explore our other favorite shave ice on Kauai .

23. Shipwreck Beach

Poipu Beach is the most popular beach on Kauai, but Shipwreck Beach is worth a visit. 

Located in front of the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa , Shipwreck Beach is one of the best beaches for sunsets and beachcombing. Locals come here for surfing and bodyboarding. While a south swell can make for excellent surfing, it can also make for dangerous swimming so check ocean conditions before you enter the water.  Shipwreck Beach did not make our list of the best beaches on Kauai for swimming .

There is no lifeguard on duty so only experienced swimmers for this beach. There are restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a large public parking lot.

24. Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail

The Maha’ulepu Heritage Trailhead starts at Shipwreck Beach . The easy-to-moderate hiking trail follows the coast along dunes, under kiawe trees (wear closed-toed shoes), and cliffs.

The trail is significant for being one of the last undeveloped spots along the South Shore. Also, this is a sacred place so leave only footprints behind.

25. Most Popular Beach: Poipu Beach

If you’re looking for something to do on Kauai, this is more than a beach . 

Not only does the beach have calm waters (heavier surf during the summer) and is beautiful with two crescent-shaped bays, it has a playground that kept our son entertained when he was done playing in the sand. 

There are lifeguards on duty, picnic tables, limited shade, showers, and restrooms at the beach.

Plus, there’s a deli right across the street so whatever food or drink you need is easily accessible. Grab a puka dog with lilikoi mustard!

Poipu Beach does get busy so don’t expect a secluded beach day. Walk over to Brenneck’s Beach as that is less busy and known for bodyboarding. 

Quick Tip: Never turn your back on the Pacific. While the waters may look calm, don’t let your guard down. Keep your body facing the waves so one doesn’t sneak up on you.

26. Kauai’s Best Blowhole

Spouting Horn Park is home to a 50-foot blowhole. Powerful waves along the coast push up through a small hole in the lava rock, making for large geysers and a big roar.

The blowhole is a fun place to stop to watch the blowhole. Allerton Botanical Gardens is across the street if you’re looking for more things to do on Kauai’s South Shore.

Things to Do on Kauai: West Side

Welcome to the West Side. Home to Waimea Town, Hanapepe Town, and so many things to do on Kauai.

We like to stay in the Poipu area and make day trips to this side of the island as there are few places to stay over here. Located firmly on the leeward side of the island, the Waimea area is dry and hot making for nice hiking and exploring the popular Waimea Canyon.

27. Na pali Coast Tour

Finally, let’s talk about Napali Coast tours. The most popular thing to do on Kauai and for good reason. We included this in our 3-can’t-miss Kauai activities video . 

Best viewed from a boat, the Napali Coast is a stretch of sea cliffs full of waterfalls, ancient Hawaiian fishing villages, sea arches, sea caves, and stories told by captains and crews. 

Go on a snorkel tour , power raft and snorkel tour , helicopter tour , or a sunset dinner cruise . Just make sure you get out there to see the coast. 

Most tours leave from Port Allen in Eleele on the West Side. Only a select few, like this power raft and snorkel tour , leave from Hanalei Bay during the summer (less surf).

28. Forbidden Island of Ni’ihau

As the name implies, visitors are forbidden from visiting the Hawaiian Island of Ni’ihau . Owned by the Robinson Family since 1864, the island is home to the Robinson family and native Hawaiians who live a traditional way of life. Hawaiian is the primary language spoken on the island, with a population of about 80 people.

The closest way to get to the island is on a snorkeling tour to the Napali Coast and Lehua . 

Lehua is a seabird sanctuary and crescent-shaped volcanic crater with crystal clear snorkeling. See monk seals, seabirds, and turtles along the coast. 

The snorkel tour is a lot of fun and it is interesting to get close, but respectfully away from Ni’ihau. Watch my experience below to see if the tour is right for your Kauai vacation.

29. Hanapepe Town

Hanapepe is a small town along the Hanapepe River. The town is built in plantation-style architecture but is one of the few towns on Kauai not built by a plantation. 

The entrepreneurial attitude of the town is present to this day with small coffee shops, art galleries, the westernmost bookstore in America, and restaurants. It is also home to an art market on Friday nights. Stop for morning coffee or for lunch as you explore the west side of Kauai.

Hanapepe was also the inspiration for the town in Disney’s Lilo and Stitch .

30. Hanapepe Swinging Bridge

Crossing the Hanapepe River near the center of town is the Hanapepe Swinging Bridge. The old wood bridge definitely swings when you walk across it. When you’re in downtown Hanapepe, look for the opening between the buildings to get to the bridge.

31. Taro Ko Chip Company

In an old green with white trim house are the best taro chips in Hawaii. Boiled in a kettle, Taro Ko Chip Company has been operating quietly for years in Hanapepe Town. Not pretentious with fancy packaging, check to see if they are open when you visit Hanapepe.

32. Waimea Town

Waimea Town is deep in Hawaiian history. Thought to be one of the first settlements for early Polynesian explorers and the first landing spot of Captain Cook in 1778, the town has had a large-sized role in maritime trading for Hawaii. 

Today, the town is popular for visitors to explore before or after a trip to Waimea Canyon. We like to stop here for lunch and shopping as there are a lot of great, small restaurants in town.

33. Waimea Canyon

Another popular thing to do on Kauai is heading to Waimea Canyon State Park . Nicknamed the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, incorrectly attributed to Mark Twain, the stunning canyon is full of waterfalls, lookouts, hiking trails, views of Ni’ihau island, a scenic drive. 

Parking and entrance fees are now required, and paid on site. Enjoy half a day to a full day here to explore the area.

We like to drive up the canyon to stop at Red Dirt Waterfall, Waimea Canyon lookout, and finally to the top which turns into Koke’e State Park with Kalalau Valley Lookout. Our Kauai Itinerary has a full route with stops!

34. Kalalau Lookout

If you can’t hike the Kalalau Trail, head to Kalalau Lookout for stunning views of this hard-to-reach valley. The cathedral cliffs give way to a lush, tropical valley that leads down to Kalalau Beach. From high above, you will watch helicopter tours and boat tours explore the coast. 

The drive up is long and windy but the views are worth it. We have had bad luck in the past of being socked in with fog and clouds.

35. Longest Beach in Hawaii

At the end of the road in West Kauai, is the longest beach in Hawaii. At over 17 miles long, the white sand beach has 100-foot sand dunes, desert cactus, and little relief from the sun. 

Polihale Beach and State Park has restrooms, picnic tables, and showers. Camping is available by permit only. 

Caution when visiting this beach for multiple reasons. First, access to the beach is by an unimproved dirt road that has deep sand. During rains, floods and mud make the road impassable. Four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended and rental car companies may prohibit driving on the road.

The beach has little shade, high winds at times, and no food available making for a long day out.  I’m not trying to scare you away but helping to make sure you have a good trip to Kauai, and not be stuck on the beach.

Island Adventures: Best Things to Do with Kids on Kauai

As I sat down to write about the best things to do on Kauai with kids after our recent trip, two thoughts kept crossing my mind. First, we were incredibly busy. And second, dang that trip was a lot of fun!

Kauai is the last of the four main islands of Hawaii our family has visited and it has a lot to offer those who prefer a less developed island. I promise you won’t be bored on Kauai even though it has a reputation for being quiet! As long as you aren’t looking for night life away from resorts, you’ll love it.

After reading this article you’ll have all the information you need to plan an epic Kauai family vacation. From where to stay to what to do to the best food, you’ll find it all here!

Where to stay on Kauai with kids

Best things to do with kids in kauai, family-friendly kauai restaurants, kauai travel tips for families, planning your family trip to kauai.

Kauai is the wettest of Hawaii’s islands and it also has the most seasonal variability in its tourist areas. Its microclimates are driven by the presence of Mount Waialeale in the center of the island and the persistent northeasterly trade winds. Take note!

Grand Hyatt Kauai

We stayed at the stunningly beautiful  Grand Hyatt Kauai​ . It’s in Poipu, on the island’s sunny south shore. That part of the island is a safer bet in terms of both weather and safe swimming conditions at this time of year.

The lush grounds and expansive and the multi-level poolscape really make you feel like you’re in paradise! If you’re looking to spend time on-site, there’s a water slide, several hot tubs and a saltwater lagoon. There’s also a small beach at the resort, Shipwreck, which is great for playing in the sand but too rough for kids to swim in. It’s about a 20 minute walk from Grand Hyatt Kauai to Poipu Beach (more on that later).

There are plenty of other great things to do at Grand Hyatt Kauai. We enjoyed taking a ukulele lesson as a family one morning, and on other days they have lei making and hula classes. Ronnie and I indulged in a wonderful massage one morning, and the spa facilities are absolutely gorgeous! Watch for a full review of the Grand Hyatt Kauai coming up.

Even better, we stayed here completely free for five nights by transferring points from  this credit card  – not even an annoying resort fee. We had access to the Grand Club thank to my World of Hyatt Globalist status but you can also book Club Access rooms by spending a few thousand more points per night or booking a Club Access room with cash. The Club provides breakfast in the morning, snacks in the afternoon and heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts in the evening. It can be a really money saver if you’re visiting with kids and plan to spend a lot of time at the resort!

Kaha Lani Resort

Moving counterclockwise around the island, the Kaha Lani Resort is a great option on the east coast of Kauai. The location in Kapa’a is extremely convenient – it’s close to the airport, many popular activities (some of them listed below) and it’s on one of the most family-friendly beaches on Kauai. You’re also centrally located to make a game-time decision on whether to head to the north shore or south shore depending on the localized weather forecasts.

While the condos at Kaha Lani aren’t particularly fancy, they offer families an opportunity to spread out in your choice of a 1- or 2-bedroom unit. You’ll also have a full kitchen for preparing picnic lunches and a lanai where you can sit out and eat a budget-friendly breakfast from the grocery store.

But where this property really shines is that it’s physically located within Lydgate Park. The park offers the best playground on Kauai, pools for swimming in the ocean that are protected from waves by lava rock walls and plenty of green space. Kapa’a town itself offers plenty of adorable coffee shops, boutiques and murals to check out and is just a 10 minute drive north.

If the location sounds good but you’d prefer a budget-friendly Kauai hotel, the Hilton Garden Inn is directly in front of the Lydgate pools! For families they offer either a free-standing cottage with a king bed in one room and a pull-out in the other or a stanard hotel room with two queen beds. This isn’t your typical mainland Hilton Garden Inn: it offers a few on-site restaurants and even a luau. There’s also a pool, gym and more.

Club Wyndham Bali Hai Villas

If you’re excited to check out the north shore of Kauai but don’t have a huge budget, consider booking Club Wyndham Bali Hai Villas. We met a family on the island that was staying there and absolutely loved their experience.

For a budget-friendly option, you can book this using points transferred from a Capital One Venture X card . Between the welcome bonus and earning 2 points per dollar spent, you can quickly rack up enough points for a great trip! You can snag a one bedroom (with sleep sofa in the living room for the kids) for just 15,000 points – that’s a major bargain. You can book your Kauai rental car through the Capital One travel portal to take advantage of the $300 credit that comes with the card, knocking out two of the major expenses of a family trip to Kauai!

The property also has a beautiful pool area, fitness center, tennis courts and more. Like most hotels on the north shore of Kauai, you’ll have to drive to the beach. But you’re just a 15 minute drive from top Kauai beaches at Hanalei Bay and Anini. Keep in mind that Hanalei Bay has huge winter swells, so it’s better to visit Kauai in summer if you want to stay in the area.

Similarly, the Makai Club in Princeville offers good value for family-friendly vacation rentals on the north shore of Kauai.

Kauai family photo session

There’s no better way to remember your epic family trip to Kauai than with professional photos! Even better, it’s the perfect way to ensure that everyone (even Mom) gets in the picture. We did photos in Hanalei Bey, which offers beautiful, dramatic scenery though the weather can be iffy in the winter. You’re more likely to find sun in Poipu on the south shore in the winter (and spring, apparently, since it rained right when we were about to begin).

We’ve had a great experience using Flytographer all over the world. The service makes it incredibly easy to connect with a great local photographer, and in Hawaii it will generally cost you less than using the photographer recommended by a hotel. As of this writing there are 4 different photographers available through Flytographer on Kauai so it’s easy to find someone who matches your style. Since all beaches in Hawaii are public and must have public access, there’s no worry about needing photo permits to shoot in an amazing spot.

Book your session early to make sure you get your top pick of photographers. The availability calendar is right on the site! For a typical family photo session we usually book a 60 minute slot. Save $25 on your first shoot!

There are some great family-friendly beaches on Kauai, but not every beach makes the cut so you’ll need to be particular about where and when you go. Thankfully there are a few that are always solid bets.

Poipu Beach is probably the most popular beach on Kauai for families. It’s usually sunny there even if the north and east shores have rain, and there are plenty of areas that are shallow with a sandy bottom. It’s also a pretty good spot for beginning snorkelers but definitely wear water shoes to enter! To access the snorkeling areas you either need to walk on rocks or swim over shallow, sharp coral… neither one ideal if you’re ill-equipped. This is also the perfect spot to watch the sunset!

The best Kauai beach for families on the east shore is Lydgate, which has everything you’d want for a full day out. There are pools surrounded by rock walls that keep the waves out but many fish in – bring your snorkel gear for the kids! Lydgate also has Kauai’s largest playground, disc golf, an insta-worthy swing that looks out to the ocean and more. There’s ample parking, just set your GPS app for “Lydgate Park pools” to get to the right spot. Since it’s on the east shore, Lydgate is a great choice for sunrise if the time change has you waking up really early – just swing through Kapa’a first for a coffee from Imua Coffee Roasters or Positive Coffee.

I can’t wait to hit Anini Beach on the North Shore next time we visit Kauai as a family. The water is protected by the extremely long surrounding reef, making water calm near the shore and offering great snorkeling. There’s no lifeguard here, so keep that in mind if you bring little kids.

Turtle watching on Poipu Beach

One of the most memorable experiences on Kauai for families is watching the green sea turtles come ashore on Poipu Beach every evening. As the water cools, they seek the warmth of the golden sand an an opportunity to rest.

It’s truly a remarkable site, and as the sun sets you’ll see dozens of turtles lining the beach. You’ll also (naturally) see hundreds of spectators watching. Just be sure to keep a respectful distance per state law and heed and instructions you receive from volunteers who are there to keep the turtles safe. For good photos, bring a long zoom lens with you.

Lots of families opt to grab dinner across the street at Puka Dog and then walk to Poipu Beach to watch the sunset and see turtles. Unfortunately Puka Dog often runs out of hot dogs and the line can be long. If this is your plan (and it’s a good one) I suggest arriving about an hour before sunset to get in line so that you can ensure you get a dog and lower your stress level. Bring a travel towel to sit out and enjoy your picnic dinner while you watch the magic of Hawaii’s turtles!

​Tubing through a sugar cane plantation

Want to add a dose of adventure to your Kauai family trip? Try a float down the waterways of a historic sugar cane plantation with Kauai Mountain Adventures!

This tour is so fun and unique, with just the right dash of thrill! We learned about the history of the sugar cane industry on Kauai and were regaled with the perfect amount of Hawaiian humor. It was so much fun that our son asked if we could sign up to go again.

Every visitor gets their own rafting-quality inner tube, gloves and a helmet with headlamp – our daughter is only 49″ but they had gear and a tube to fit her. You’ll go through open channels as well as enclosed tunnels as you turn, bump and splash with the other participants and our kids – who are hesitant enough to refuse activities like ziplining – loved every minute.

The minimum age is 5 years old but kids have to be able to handle dark, enclosed spaces and being separated from their parents. Once you’re on the water, it’s basically impossible to stay together the entire time. But we found a great sense of camaraderie among participants on our tour and plenty of people laughing and grinning with our tiny 9 year old when she was in a different area of the clump of tubes.

This activity is extremely popular, so if you have a specific time in mind I recommend booking at least 6 weeks in advance. “Lunch” is served toward the end of every tour no matter what time it is, so a start time around 10:20 or 10:40 is ideal for most families (though it wasn’t an option when we booked a month ahead).

Visit Waimea Canyon

Waimea Canyon is sometimes referred to as the Grand Canyon of Hawaii, and personally I think it’s more beautiful thanks to its abundant greenery and waterfalls. Spend the day exploring Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Parks (pay for admission upon arrival, one ticket for both parks) to enjoy its natural beauty. You can have a great time here whether you opt to hike or just stop at the overlooks for amazing views. It’s the perfect break from the beach!

Continuing along the road will take you to the beginning of the Na Pali coast. To say the scenery is gorgeous really doesn’t do it justice! It’s absolutely worth the trip. From the time we turned on to Waimea Canyon Drive (HI-550) to the Kalalau Lookout where the accessible road ended it took us about two hours, allowing for plenty of stops as suggesting in the Guide Along app we used. One of my favorites was the other-worldly red dirt waterfall on the left side near mile marker 23 – don’t miss it. Our drive down was much faster (only about 40 minutes) since we didn’t stop.

Be sure to bring lots of extra water, sunscreen and throw some sneakers or boots in the trunk in case you opt to do one of the short trails – or in case the last mile of the road to the Pu’u O Kila lookout is closed as it was when we visited. For the more intrepid (and prepared) you can continue hiking along the ridge past Pu’u O Kila for even better views. Realistically I don’t think it’s necessary to go to Pu’u O Kila if you aren’t going to hike the ridge – in looking back at my photos, the difference in the view versus Kalalau is pretty subtle. Be very careful if you’re exploring the ridge with young children, as there are no guardrails along the ridge and the drop is basically a sheer cliff (though the path is plenty wide for mindful young hikers; it’s the runners and boundary testers you need to be careful with).

Full disclosure: the views of the Na Pali coast are almost never as clear as the day we went. We got really lucky! The cliffs won’t be in full sun until around 8am and on many days clouds start to roll in by late morning. But we were there in the early afternoon, so you never know what you’re going to get.

Stroll through Hanapepe

Before heading up into Waimea Canyon, we spent a leisurely morning enjoy the town of Hanapepe. It’s one of the most authentic towns remaining on Kauai and has thus served as the backdrop for numerous movies and was even the model for “Lilo and Stitch”. Many of the century-old buildings have been converted to boutiques, eateries and art galleries. The town is so vibrant that people come from all over the island for its “art night” every Friday 5-9pm!

Begin your visit at Midnight Bear Breads, an awesome tiny bakery that has earned a fantastic reputation and sells out before closing nearly every day. It’s an ideal place for brunch before hitting Waimea Canyon as you can fill up on a delicious tartine, panini or sandwich while you’re there and then bring some indulgent pastries along for the ride. They’re open Wednesday through Saturday.

While you’re in Hanapepe, walk across its famous swinging bridge. I admit that this was less impressive than I anticipated, but it’s still a fun stop especially with kids who need to get their wiggles out.

Hanapepe is one of the best places to shop for souvenirs on Kauai since there are so many wonderful boutiques and galleries to browse. We especially enjoyed Aloha Spice Company (which has more than spices) and Banana Patch Studio, where you can watch artists painting Kauai-themed pottery by hand.

One thing we missed (sadly!) is the super cute “Lilo and Stitch” mural in town. It’s on the front of the Aloha Theater Inn, which you’ll see a few buildings past the church on Hanapepe Road. You can also pop into Talk Story Bookstore for books records and small souvenirs.

Na Pali coast boat tour + snorkeling

At the last minute we decided to take a morning boat tour along the Na Pali coast on our last day on Kauai. All I can say is  do it !

Over and over our daughter declared it the best day of her life as we drifted past breaching whales, playful dolphins, bobbing turtles, circling manta rays and of course the stunning scenery. The topography is even more fascinating than pictures can show.

We went with Blue Dolphin and they were top-notch, with a comfortable boat and great crew. Captain Evan did a great job, kept us entertained with awesome music and even let our son take the wheel. His helpers on board constantly checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. I really appreciate that Blue Dolphin ran the boat despite being at half capacity – we loved being able to spread out and it was one of the best Hawaii boat tours we’ve been on.

However , if you are prone to serious sea sickness this is not the experience for you. We were all completely fine but we got lucky with calm water along the Na Pali coast – the crew was surprised by the good condition. But on the way back we had intense waves for the last 45 minutes, which is typical for boats coming into Port Allen. We sat on the upper deck and I was absolutely drenched from head to toe by the time we got back, but we all had an indescribably great time. Just be sure to leave your dry clothes and towels below deck and stay in your swim suit the whole time!

If you don’t want to swim, you could also opt for a sunset dinner cruise. You’ll get to enjoy seeing the Na Pali coast bathed in golden light.

One thing I wish I’d known before our trip was that we could save big money on our boat tour with the Shaka Gold Card . For just a $30 membership, you gain access to meaningful discounts on some top activities. I learned about it directly from the company we sailed with on Kauai so it’s absolutely a legitimate way to get discounts.

We decided that Blue Dolphin was the right choice for our trip over a few other Kauai boat tour companies for a few reasons. First, know that all of the tour companies out of Port Allen (in the south west part of the island) have great reviews. We liked the larger boat and additional upper seating area of Blue Dolphin since there’s more opportunity to be out in the fresh air while comfortably seated facing forward.

We also liked the price tag – even without the Shaka Gold discount it was a lot less expensive, but with the discount the price is basically unbeatable. Kids 2-12 are eligible for the child price while teens are eligible for the youth price. Note that you will only see the “member price” once you purchase a Shaka Gold card and sign in.

Kauai helicopter tour

We are not a thrill-seeking family, so we skipped the Na Pali Coast helicopter tour this time around. But my friend Lana visited a few weeks after us with her boys and they had an amazing experience! She shared that it was fascinating and absolutely breathtaking.

You’ll depart from the airport and spend an hour flying all over the island, including Mount Waialeale, Alakai swamp, Waimea Canyon and more. This company is one of the most reputable on the island and gets rave reviews.

Go to a luau

Confession: I didn’t love the luau we attended and neither did my kids, but it still might be a great choice for you.

We opted to check out Smith’s Family Garden Luau on this trip. It’s fairly typical for a non-hotel luau but takes place on beautiful grounds near the Wailua River. The entire operation is family-run and everyone is extremely friendly.

Overall the food was pretty good and we appreciated the thorough labeling on the buffet for those with food allergies or dietary restrictions. There were plenty of choices for those of us who don’t eat pork as well. During dinner there were pretty typical ukulele and hula performances, including some audience participation.

The show after dinner wasn’t as enjoyable for us as others we’ve attended. It highlights Hawaiian history through the dances of various groups that have come to the islands, including from Japan and the Philippines. The amphitheater’s configuration also made it feel like we were really far from the performers, as you can see above (and we were not all the way in the back). I’m sorry to say it because the staff clearly works hard but the show could use some freshening up – when talking with a fellow Hawaii lover who attended in the 1980s, it sounds like the show hasn’t really changed in all that time. For some people that’s a positive as it definitely harks back to the beginnings of mainland tourism to Hawaii.

But it isn’t all negative! If you’re visiting Hawaii on a budget and have never seen a full Hawaiian or Polynesian dance show then Smith’s is a good option to consider. Why? Right there on the booking page you can select “Show Only Package”. The price really can’t be beat – just $25 for adults and $12.50 for kids 3-12 years old. Even if you choose to attend the full luau with dinner, the child and youth prices are about $100 less than you’ll pay at hotel luaus.

Two other Kauai luaus that are on my radar for subsequent trips are Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation and Ali’i Luau at Sheraton Kauai. Luau Kalamaku is a great option for families with younger kids as it includes a train ride around a historic sugar cane plantation – a great way for everyone to learn more about the island’s history. The storytelling during the post-dinner show is focused on the seafaring Polynesians’ journey to Hawaii, which my kids love hearing about. You can upgrade to the Gold package for premium seating.

The Ali’i Luau at Poipu Beach has a great oceanfront location – the only one on Kauai. I’ve heard great feedback about the food, the performances and the family-oriented cultural activities as well. We’ll visit this one next time we’re on Kauai!

Kauai is full of so many small mom-and-pop eateries that you’ll never run out of new options to try. Here are a few faves:

• Kukui’ula Local Market  – In addition to selling grocery provisions, there’s a row of local food vendors there daily. Go in the morning or early afternoon for an acai bowl or a poke bowl (preferably both). You can thank me later.
• Koloa Fish Market  – Another great poke stop on the south shore, though with limited hours so check before you go.
• Da Crack Mexican Grinds  – Great fish tacos, but if you’re going around dinner time be sure to order online and pick up as the wait can be long.

• Puka Dog  – Yes, these famous hot dogs are very good. Choose Polish or vegetarian, but prepare yourself for a long line. They sometimes run out before closing, so you might want to arrive an hour before sunset to get in line and then take your dog across the street to Poipu Beach to watch the turtles (don’t do it in the opposite order).
• Midnight Bear Bakery  – Faaaantastic bakery in Hanapepe, but try to get there on the early side as they sell out basically every day.

• Postcards Restaurant  – If you’re up near Hanalei for dinner, make an outdoor reservation for Postcards. My ceviche and the kids’ wagyu beef were both excellent, and that cake was amazing .

• Merriman’s  – For a fancy dinner on our last night, it was hard to top Merriman’s – sister restaurant of Monkeypod on Maui . Great cocktails, fish and steak.

• Waikomo shave ice  – This easy-to-miss shave ice truck is near Hanapepe and Port Allen and shares the site with a collection of other cool food trucks and boutique shops.
• Wishing Well shave ice – This is Marcie’s pick for the best shave ice on Kauai, but their limited hours stymied our plans to visit.

• Pineapple In Paradise -This Dole Whip van drives around the island and always offers pineapple and another flavor. Be sure to track them down!

Because we stayed on the south shore (where many families choose to visit from fall through spring) our food recommendations are biased in that direction. But if you’re staying on the north or east shore there are lots of great options for you too! Be sure to explore the towns of Kapa’a and Hanalei for many more local spots.

Now that I’ve shared the best family activities in Kauai, Hawaii I want to add a few tips I’ve learned that will help you have an amazing trip.

Yes, you will definitely need a rental car on Kauai unless you plan to park yourself at a hotel the whole time and use their shuttle to expand your radius by a mile or two. Read up on renting a car in Hawaii to make sure you do it as economically as possible and choose the right car.

Be sure to bring the right car seat for your child. Hawaii’s updated car seat law requires rear facing until at least 2 years old, some sort of harnessed car seat until at least 4 years old and a booster seat until at least 10 years old or 4’9″ (average for an 11 year old). I’m a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician and I’ve written up my suggestions for the best travel car seat by age .

Speaking of driving, I highly recommend that you download the GuideAlong app ! We purchased the Hawaii bundle that covers all of the islands and used it extensively while driving on both Maui and Kauai. It added so much context to our experience and helped us understand even more of the local history and culture. It was so enjoyable that our kids would ask us to turn it on when we got in the car.

If you haven’t been to Hawaii before (or it’s been a long time) you’ll almost certainly want to attend a luau. They’re fun for the whole family, and each one is a little different. But they all have one thing in common: they run late .

If you have young kids who go to bed early or you’re coming from the Eastern time zone, be sure to schedule the luau for the end of your trip so everyone will be better adjusted to the Hawaii time zone. My favorite timing is the next-to-last night of a trip to Hawaii – everyone’s bodies have acclimated but the festivities don’t get in the way of packing up.

Sun protection

I can’t stress enough how important sun protection is in Hawaii. Even the smallest misstep could lead to a painful, damaging disaster. I strongly recommend long-sleeve rash guards for the entire family and frequent sunscreen reapplication for faces and hands (my husband learned that one the hard way).

Having spent a lot of time in Hawaii with kids, I feel like it’s virtually impossible to reapply sunscreen on a water-loving kid’s torso as often as you truly need to. Besides, more rash guard = more time playing and less time on sunscreen! My daughter absolutely loves these suits and my son lived in this rash guard , which matches everything else well enough. My husband wore this one every single day (especially for head coverage while snorkeling) and it was a real help.

In terms of sunscreen, it’s critical that you use reef-safe sunscreen in Hawaii. It’s the law! We’ve had good experiences with Thinkbaby sunscreen along with All Good sport sunscreen . Be sure to grab 3oz sizes if you’re flying carry-on, and you can stash a tube in each person’s backpack. It may seem “extra” but I also like to throw in a reef-safe sunscreen stick ; my kids prefer it to creams and it doesn’t count toward my liquid allowance. We tend to use that more as backup and for reapplication rather than our main sunscreen of the day.

If you’re visiting Hawaii with a baby, you’ll need some non-sunscreen options in your toolkit. Check out my Hawaii packing list for kids for lots of ideas!

Thankfully for our family Hawaii rarely generates as many souvenir requests as other trips! We’ve had success placing item limits rather than dollar limits, though every family does it differently. Unless there’s something truly unique that comes along, it’s helpful to specify one t-shirt, one stuffed animal and one food item (for example).

For more meaningful souvenir shopping, be sure to spend check out the galleries in Hanapepe. You’ll find beautiful hand-crafted items and can even see some of them in process! We also loved browsing in Warehouse 3540 on the south shore in Lawai; it’s an old pineapple canning plant that has been given new life as a marketplace for small vendors and food stands. It’s a great stop on your way back from the harbor in Port Allen. You’ll also find plenty of cute shops in Kapa’a.

There’s also one free souvenir your family shouldn’t miss out on: a Hawaii mug from the ABC stores. No, it’s not the most authentic souvenir to buy in Hawaii but it might become one of your family’s most frequently used items! You can get one for every $100 worth of receipts you present from ABC stores (and their affiliates) without spending an extra dime.

Kauai airport

Kauai has just one airport, on the east side of the island in Lihue. While the airport isn’t huge, you may encounter lengthy security lines when you’re departing if it’s a popular time of day like early morning or evening – especially over school breaks. It’s very helpful to have TSA PreCheck, which will help you avoid much of the wait. The Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card has tons of great features, including a credit that covers the entire PreCheck fee! Each adult in your party needs to have PreCheck but kids can go through with their parents.

As with all airports in Hawaii, you’ll have to scan your luggage at an agricultural inspection station when departing. If you are checking luggage, the scan takes place before you hand in your luggage so be sure to allow extra time. All carry-on bags are inspected after the TSA check but before you enter the gate area.

Best Kauai Farm Tours for Kids and Teens

1. lydgate chocolate farm tour.

If your family wants to check out a farm on Kauai AND taste some incredible chocolate, you’ll want to sign up for this tour.

Lydgate Farms is located on the East side of Kauai and it’s been around for generations.

During the three-hour Lydgate Farms chocolate tour, you’ll get to explore a tropical farm, taste Hawaiian fruit, and sample lots of chocolate.

2. Kalalea View Farm Tour

If you’re looking for a private Kauai farm tour, head to Kalalea View Farm on the East side of Kauai.

This is my top pick for a farm tour on Kauai because there are TONS of hands-on activities for kids of all ages. You get to pick 3 of them to do on your tour.

3. Kauai Coffee Company Farm Tour

If you’d like a Hawaii farm tour where you get to ride around in an open-air vehicle, sign up for the Kauai Coffee Company farm tour.

It’s located on the South shore of Kauai and it’s one of the best coffee farm tours in Hawaii.

You’ll get to see the coffee plantation, epic views of the ocean, the processing plants, farm animals, a gulch, and more.

6. Kilohana Plantation Train Ride

I really only added the train ride at Kilohana Plantation to the list for families with babies, toddlers, or preschoolers.

It’s an easy way to see lots of tropical fruit trees and even get out and feed farm animals like pigs and horses.

This is a nice stop if you’re already heading to Kilohana Plantation to do the Koloa Rum tasting, stopping by the Sweet Shoppe, or have lunch at Gaylord’s.

From chocolate tastings to kid-friendly museums, below are 5 rainy day activities in Kauai that the whole family can enjoy. Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or teens, here are our favorite things to do on a rainy day in Kauai.

1. Indulge in Local Treats at Lydgate Farms Kauai Chocolate

If your kids love chocolate (let’s face it, who doesn’t?), then Lydgate Farms is a must-visit on a rainy day. Rainy weather might keep you off the beaches, but it’s perfect for exploring Kauai’s agricultural side. Lydgate Farms is home to some of the best cacao trees on the island, and they offer a family-friendly chocolate tour that’s as educational as it is delicious.

Even if you don’t have time for the full tour, stop by their shop for some free samples—because chocolate tastes just as sweet, no matter the weather! The kids will love learning how chocolate is made, from bean to bar, and parents will appreciate the opportunity to take home some gourmet chocolate. The tour ends with a chocolate tasting that’s sure to be a hit with both kids and adults!

Remember that all guests must be 7 or older to take the tour! For families with little ones, a quick stop at the shop still offers an experience worth savoring.

Hawaii’s rainy season  grabs my attention every year. It runs from November to March. During this time, the islands get a lot of rain! This makes some places super wet, especially  Mount Waialeale on Kauai .

People say it’s the rainiest spot on Earth. Now, that might sound like a bummer for your beach plans, but I see it as Hawaii showing off another side of its beauty.

Know this – not all parts of the islands are soaked during these months. The  windward sides face more rain while the leeward or west coasts stay drier.

So, if you’re planning your Hawaiian vacation around these months, there’s still plenty of sun to catch! You just need to know where to look.

Trust me, finding those sunny spots is part of the adventure here in Hawaii during the wet season.

Getting ready for rain on your Hawaii trip is smart. I always pack a light  waterproof jacket . It’s easy to carry and keeps me dry. I also bring  waterproof shoes or sandals . Walking in wet weather is no fun with soaked feet.

I check the  weather forecast  every morning. If there’s a chance of rain, I change my plans. Instead of hiking or beach days, I pick indoor activities like museums or shopping centers.

Staying safe is key. Avoid swimming near waterfalls and streams after heavy rains. Roads can flood, so driving less is better during downpours.

Hiking in rainy conditions increases flash flood risks too. So, I stick to safer options if it looks like it will pour all day.

• Iolani Palace : Step back in time at Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the United States. Built in 1882, this stunning structure was the official residence of Hawaii’s last reigning monarchs. Here, one can explore the  USS Arizona Memorial  and feel the profound impact of December 7, 1941. The narratives of courage and sacrifice are profoundly stirring.

• You’ll find  gear rentals at the centers , making it easy to just show up and climb.
• Yoga classes are another fantastic choice. They help you relax and stretch out.
• Local studios offer classes throughout the day .
• Some yoga spots have views of the beaches or mountains, even if you’re inside.
• You might try a  type of yoga new to you, like Vinyasa or Hot Yoga .

As someone who loves helping people explore Hawaii, I always suggest these activities. They show you can have fun here, rain or shine!

I always mention to voyagers to remain calm even if they wake up to rainfall. Hawaii possesses a discreet strategy. One can simply relocate from the humid part to the arid part of the island.

This is due to the occurrence of more rainfall on one side, while another side stays parched.

Let me clarify this phenomenon. The  windward coast , confronting the Pacific Ocean, frequently experiences lots of rain, making it verdant and luxurious. Conversely, there’s the  leeward or western coast .

It’s considerably parched here, credited to Hawaii’s  mountains obstructing some of the clouds and rain .

Therefore, if you’re on Oahu and find yourself amidst a torrential rain, consider relocating to the Waianae Coast or Ko Olina area for dryer weather! Similarly, in Maui, shifting from Hana to Kihei can critically alter the rainy conditions.

On my travels around Hawaii, I’ve found that lookout points near waterfalls are some of the best spots to enjoy nature. Even on a rainy day, these places offer stunning views.

You see, rain brings the waterfalls to life, making them flow stronger and look more impressive.

At these lookout points, you get to watch this amazing show from a safe spot.

But  safety is key . It’s important not to swim near waterfalls or streams during rain because it can be dangerous. Roads might also flood, so driving can become tough.

And hiking? It’s better to avoid it since flash floods  are a real risk in rainy weather.

So instead of getting too close, I recommend finding a cozy spot at one of these overlooks where you can stay dry and still take in the breathtaking scenes before you.

Each island has special spots that are perfect for wet weather. In Oahu, why not catch a lively show at Rock-A-Hula or see fish at Waikiki Aquarium?

Maui offers lush views at Iao Valley State Park and amazing sea life at the Maui Ocean Center.

Over on the Big Island, learn about coffee making with indoor tours at Kona coffee farms. And if you’re visiting Kauai, enjoy covered boat tours on the Wailua River.

Oahu offers great options for rainy days, and I’ve experienced a couple myself. One is the  Rock-A-Hula show . It’s a fun way to spend an evening. The performers are talented, and they bring Hawaiian culture to life with music and dance.

It’s like stepping into a lively piece of Hawaii’s history but in a modern setting.

Another fantastic spot is the  Waikiki Aquarium . As someone who loves learning about marine life, this place was fascinating. They have colorful fish, reef sharks, and even Hawaiian monk seals!

The best part? You get to see all these amazing creatures up close while staying dry indoors.

Both spots are perfect for when you’re vacationing in Hawaii but find yourself caught in some rain.

I love telling visitors about  Iao Valley State Park  in Maui. It’s a lush place that feels like a scene from a movie. You can walk on easy trails and see the famous Iao Needle, a tall green peak standing proud among the clouds.

This park shows off Hawaii’s natural beauty, even when it rains. The rain makes everything look greener.

At 100, this Kauai woman reflects on her life — and the family she worked to honor

LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) - For this story, I’m taking a person approach. It’s the story of my childhood neighbor who became a life-long friend.

Mrs. Akiyo Matsuyama celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday, and her family is taking this moment to look back and praise her incredible life and legacy.

For many years, my family lived across the street from Mrs. Matsuyama in Lihue. Now days, I stay in touch by visiting her when I’m on Kauai at her independent senior living community.

During our last visit, she praised the Regency at Puakea staff for the great care and their aloha.

We also took a trip down memory lane, recounting what it was like growing up near Kauai’s Halfway Bridge many decades ago.

“Main thing, we used to swim, climb tree. Pick mountain apple, mango, guava. We used to swim and fish a lot,” she said.

She remembers her father as a great fisherman, so naturally she also picked up on those skills.

“I just had good life,” she said.

We also went on a walk and despite her being 100 years old, my mother and I were the ones that needed to try and keep up with her! In fact, that’s part of her key to a long life.

“I cannot sit still. I like move around you know. Stay active, yeah. Take part in things,” she explained.

While preparing to celebrate her milestone birthday, I also learned that in addition to running several successful businesses with her husband, she spent many years advocating for the memory and honor of Kauai’s five Korean War veterans Missing in Action.

Her brother, Army Private First Class Takeshi Sasaki was one of them who’s fate is unknown.

Her family says she spent years searching for answers, and worked to memorialize the fallen, getting federal agencies to dedicate plaques in their honor.

”She just didn’t want these Korean veterans to be forgotten,” her daughter Marsha Nishimura said. “I think she just had a special place in her heart for these Korean vets.”

The family says the last known record of her brother was that he was wounded in battle and awaiting medical care. The rest remains unknown.

Today, Mrs. Matsuyama enjoys a much simpler life, focusing on her quilting & crafting, and daily walks.

As the matriarch of Kauai’s Matsuyama family, a tight bond with loved ones is a lesson passed down through her family tree.

“My dad and my mom, as busy as they were, we all grew up emphasizing family,” Nishimura said. “They had bowling leagues and they had friends over a lot. They had a very good social life as well. They made time for the family and friends.”

And along the way, good neighbors too.
