Welcome to the Seine River

Like a Monet painting, the French landscapes you'll explore from aboard your riverboat will impress with color and charms that change with the light and the lay of the land... in Normandy, with its seaside villages posing in picturesque images... in the gardens of Giverny blooming with Impressionist inspirations... in the city of Paris with its art and architecture immortally loved... and so much more.

Experiencing paris, paris is....

Its unique arrondissements, brimming with character, like the Marais – home to trendy cafés, galleries and boutiques… the River Seine, winding its way through the city… the Eiffel Tower, one of the world's most recognizable icons… the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, needing no introduction… the incomparable Louvre, perhaps the most famous museum on Earth… Rue Montorgueil, ined with produce stands, boulangeries, cheese shops, wine stores, and fishmongers… Les Invalides, the palatial complex housing the monumental tomb of Napoleon… Place de la Bastille, site of the infamous fortress where the French Revolution began… Père Lachaise, the famous cemetery and final resting place of Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Edith Piaf. And that's just the beginning…

Tauck Exclusive Early-opening Visit to Monet's Giverny

Claude monet's home and gardens in giverny, without crowds.

In springtime, the famous villa and gardens in the village of Giverny is awash in pink and green, adorned in wisteria, azalea and water lilies, and basked in dappled sunlight reminiscent of the works of its 43-year resident, painter Claude Monet. Our exclusive pre-opening visit to the pioneer Impressionist's retreat shows you the artist's home as he lived it and painted it. Monet's pink stucco house gives the impression that his family of 10 still lives there; its rooms showcase private furnishings, and his collection of Japanese prints adorn walls throughout. Walk along pathways bordered with nasturtiums, hollyhocks, hybrid lilies or snapdragons, and go through the tunnel that leads to the Water Garden and the Japanese Bridge.

An exclusive, private Tauck evening at Château du Taillis

Dinner, music and more at historic château du taillis.

An exclusive Tauck experience, featuring a gala reception, dinner and music, awaits during an evening at an 16th-century Renaissance château set on a park-like estate in the Normandy countryside, not far from the Seine. Built in 1530, the exquisite Italian Renaissance mansion with baroque interiors boasts a 300-year medley of architectural styles that reflect the tastes and times of its owners, known for its stately gardens and arboretum

Visit WWII Battle of Normandy beaches

River cruising on the seine & normandy's beaches.

Our Seine river cruises include a visit to the famed beaches of Normandy, where Allied forces landed on June 6, 1944, "D-Day," marking the beginning of the liberation of France and the Allied victory on the Western Front. Click "Learn More" to visit our blog, The Taucker, for an introduction to one of our key travel partners, who along with his colleagues, shares his expertise with guests.

Visit Versailles

Tour the halls of the former royal residence.

We take mirrors pretty much for granted today, but back in King Louis XIV's time, they were very expensive, which may be why he had the Hall of Mirrors (with 357 individual mirrors) built in his Château de Versailles. Frankly, he was a bit of a show-off. Although no one really knows for sure, historians estimate that it may have cost the "Sun King" (and therefore the people of France) more than $2 billion (in today's US dollars) to build his over-the-top palace in the town of Versailles outside Paris. Prepare to be dazzled when your guide takes you inside the palatial estate on a visit to Versailles.

Inspired by the Destination

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

On the Seine a highlight is Monet’s house and garden at Giverny and other villages made famous by the Impressionist painters including picturesque Les Andelys, birthplace of the artist Poussin. In ancient Rouen see the Market Place where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake, and the cathedral painted so often by Monet.

At the mouth of the River Seine explore Honfleur, a fishing town with a colourful harbour much loved by painters. Some itineraries offer excursions to the famous WWII landing beaches of Normandy.

Giverny

Here are a few highlights of a cruise along the Seine river:

  • The impressive sights of Paris, including the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower
  • Claude Monet’s fascinating house and gardens at Giverny
  • Excursions to Normandy’s historic beaches, site of the 1944 D-Day landings
  • Medieval Château Gaillard, Richard the Lionheart’s castle
  • Rouen’s remarkable Gothic cathedral
  • The opulent Palace of Versailles
  • Honfleur’s colourful harbour
  • Caudebec-en-Caux and its Notre Dame church

Caudebec en Caux

Les andelys.

My mother and I do a Croisieurope cruise every summer; it is a firm tradition for us. The Paris and Seine cruise is ideal as it easy to access and is interesting. The cruise got off to its usual great start with a nighttime cruise through Paris, sat on deckchairs on the sundeck with strict instructions not to stand up due to low bridges. The city looked amazing from this angle and at this time. The other calling points were Rouen, a wonderful, if reconstructed historical city, and Honfleur, always a firm favourite. One drawback on this cruise was the timings of the landings, with Rouen cathedral closed till after departure, and Honfleur being mostly closed on a Sunday morning.

However I took the opportunity to explore parts of Rouen I had not seen, taking in interesting suburban Victorian architecture for my photography website. Honfleur is a very pretty, artistic town, famous for the Impressionists and the composer Sate. The food was excellent. I do not eat meat, but the chef took time to provide truly delicious pescetarian meals without seeming to bat an eyelid. I really, really enjoyed every meal. Big bowls of fresh strawberries were given when desserts were not wished. Wine flowed and was complimentary. On the last night a gala meal was provided and was excellent. (You do not need to dress up for this, and the atmosphere is casual). Cocktails are often provided and drinks at the bar are mostly free. Breakfast is of a high standard. Lunch is a major event, three courses, and as a result expect to spend upwards of two hours a day sat in the restaurant.

The cabins, decor of the ship, and public rooms are simple, perhaps a little dated and might not be of the same standard as some upmarket cruises but are comfortable and good value nonetheless. Meals are eaten en masse and initially we had to share a table, but later we were able to have a table for two which is unusual. The commentaries are informative. Information is clear. I did not go on any trips (which cost extra) as I have done them before. Wifi was available in the bar but very, very slow. My favourite part of a Croisieurope cruise is just sitting on deck and watching the unfolding scenery. We were a bit unlucky with the weather on this one, and as a result the bar got quite busy and noisy. Taxis were efficiently and punctually arranged for onward transfer. My only major gripe is arrival at the cruise. There is no waiting room. I was travelling with my elderly mother who cannot walk far or with ease.

Our Eurostar arrived punctually and the taxi journey from the station was quick and as a result arrived early. But whilst we were allowed to leave the bags we could not wait onboard, not even in the bar, even though the boat was open; we were politely told to go away and come back later, easier said than done when it is raining and one of you needs a walking stick. The staff were mostly lovely and some crew members especially so.

We have travelled with APT before (Budapest to Amsterdam) so since we had the time (and some money as they arent the cheapest option) we decided to do a 7 day river cruise on the Seine. APT are an all-inclusive operator for this tour (they are a sister company to Amawaterways and share boats with them, some of the tours however are explicitly APT and this is one of them. It leads to a greater number of Aussies and Kiwis on board - it does stand for Australian Pacific Touring after all).

We flew from Manchester to Paris and all transfers are included so we were met be a taxi and taken straight to the ship. MS AmaLegro docks by the Parc Andre Citroen (opposite the 16th Arr.) and whilst you can see the Eiffel Tower it is a bit of a walk into town (theres always the Metro though).

Check in was swift and efficient and we were soon unpacking in the cabin. After the mandatory greeting/safety briefing meeting we had our first dinner. All meals are open seating so that you have the opportunity to sit with different fellow travellers every meal if you wish and thus meet some of the 150 passengers on board. Dinners are 4 course, waiter service (Appetizer, Soup, Entre and Dessert) and are served with a different red and white wine every evening. The cruise includes all basic drinks - soft, bottled water (supplied to cabin as required), beer, wine and some cocktails and spirits. Premium drinks are charged for. There are also 2 coffee machines (with hot water) to provide self-service drinks 24 hours of the day. There were times when the crew could hardly keep up with the maintenance on these (particularly when a trip returns).

The cruise is very dependent on the ability of the cruise director (Sebastien Leroy) and the captain (Erno Major) and his crew and in this case we had a great cruise. Most of the deck crew are Hungarian whilst the majority of the hotel staff are eastern European, they are all friendly and eager to help.

Even before we set off Sebastien had decided to alter the itinerary from that which we booked as he felt a cruise should cruise more and dock less in one place. With the Captains assistance then this is what we did (there are other options for the tours in each location):-

Friday: Embark, free to wander into Paris in spare time

Saturday: Scenic cruising to Vernon, walked into town to the Saturday market and wandered around. Afternoon tour to Giverny (Monet)

Sunday: Scenic cruising to Caudebec en Caux, Afternoon tour to Honfleur. After dinner walked round town.

Monday: Early departure for day trip to Caen (WWII monument and Cathedral plus return via Pays dAuge - villages, orchards and for this week only a medieval jousting tournament)

Tuesday: Bike tour round Rouen then went back in afternoon to walk round at leisure. In the evening Sebastien took a group up to the Cathedral at 10:30pm for the Son et Lumiere (first set based on Joan of Arc, second on the Impressionists)

Wednesday: Scenic cruising (inc. visit to bridge for those interested to hear from Captain about his equipment and how the hydraulic system works - the bridge house ducks for low bridges and locks). After lunch Les Andelys and Chateau Gaillard , walked around town ourselves later. Attended the classical strings trio in the lounge after dinner - excellent set.

Thursday: Up early to walk around Conflans (our docking point) then a tour of Auvers-sur-Oise (Van Gogh). Afternoon we cruised back into Paris whilst sampling Normandy fare (cider, camembert etc) and completing the usual feedback form! At 10:30pm the Captain undocked to reverse 400m upstream closer to the Eiffel Tower so we would all have a better view from the sun deck of the Towers 11pm sparkling show. (the lights flash for 5 mins) before sailing back to base.

Friday: Out of the cabins by 9am with use of the lounge (and all facilities) until your taxi group was called for trip to airport. [Efficient process].

All the tours have local guides and generally ran with individual radio receivers so that you can clearly hear the guides speaking from up to 25yds away without difficulty. Some guides seemed to think they were paid by the word but all were knowledgeable and had insights to give.

I find it a tiring holiday since I choose to be fairly busy (there is always the option to do nothing though) but I did find that with all the activity (and despite all the good food - although I had the soup and sandwiches lunch in the lounge rather than the 3 course meal in the dining room - and lots of lattes) that I came home about the same weight.

The cabins are fine - we were on the middle deck - with comfortable beds and sufficient space to store everything. We heard very little noise (beyond the occasional vacuum flush of a toilet). The attendants were efficient and any small issues were quickly dealt with. River cruises seem to specialise in towel sculpture and Georgi came up with a skate and an astounding orang utang (that also required a trouser hanger to attach to the curtain rail!) that we had not seen before.

The food is good and plentiful but how all the chefs work in that small kitchen space is amazing. The bread and pastry chef delivers particularly good fare to my taste. The ship has a small shop , a small spa and a library (which supplies daily crossword and Sudoku puzzles as well as news bulletins for the 4 nationalities on-board - Au, NZ, GB and US). There is an exchange book section too but more and more people are converting to e-readers now. The free WiFi worked well on-board - both in the cabins and the 2 lounges (but is not available on deck) and we barely used the infotainment system apart from watching the odd news program when getting up.

The weather certainly made the holiday (apparently the previous week had been wet every day whereas we had a heavy shower in Caen and a grey morning to Les Andelys), there is not enough room for everyone in the main lounge if it is wet or cold/windy outside and few people get to the quiet lounge at the stern of the boat (nice of an evening).

Altogether a good holiday and one that made us keen to go back to Normandy again - and take another tour with APT, perhaps the Rhone next year. Be aware though that APT are dividing their offer into an all-inclusive option with extra enhancements and dining options (Royal tours) as well as the luxury version we did above and a less inclusive offering (Travelmarvel) for 2014.

Although the main advertised highlight of this cruise is the landing beaches in Normandy, it would be just as much of interest to aspiring artists.

The boat spends the first two nights moored in Paris within easy reach of the Eiffel tower (about 30 minutes walk or a short train ride) and with spectacular views by day or by night. There is a whole day to explore the city, with excursions or independently, before a short voyage downstream on day 3 to the village of Conflans from where a trip was made to the village where Van Gogh spent his final months. The next day the mooring was in the town of Vernon, just a short trip to Monets garden at Giverny. The furthest point reached on the voyage was the city of Rouen, for 2 nights, from where trips were organised to the Normandy beaches and to the town of Honfleur. A walking tour of the city was also included before the return voyage, including a stop at the lovely village of Les Anderlys, before finally reaching Paris on the morning of disembarkation.

The Avalon Creativity is one of the newer boats on the Seine, owned by an American company so about two thirds of the 140 passengers were American, with the rest a mixture of British, Canadian, and Australian. Cabins were of an average size, but cleverly designed so that it never felt cramped - even in the small bathroom area - and with plenty of storage space (including a safe) and a fridge.

Food was excellent and varied, and the drinks (included with the meals) flowed freely with the help of the attentive staff, who were not above providing their own brand of on-board entertainment in the evening - although a couple of outside acts came onboard as well. All staff were very friendly and helpful - especially the English cruise director, Tony, who remained professional, yet accessable at all times, and made sure that everything ran smoothly.

For us it was our first experience of river cruising and we were won over. We had all of the things that we enjoy about ocean cruising, with none of the bad points (enormous boats, long queues, days at sea with no sight of land). A very relaxing and memorable cruise.

Seine River Cruises

seine river cruise holidays

What better way to discover Paris and northern France than on a river cruise on the incomparable Seine? As well as showing you all the delights of the iconic, romantic capital, our Seine cruise will take you on this enchanting, gently flowing river all the way to where it meets the sea at the English Channel. The landscape changes endlessly as you glide through the heart of historic Normandy. Medieval castles and stone bridges give way to chalk cliffs, verdant green countryside, cider orchards, half-timbered barns and wooden farmhouses. Steep forested hills that give sanctuary to deer and wild boar make way for country estates and pretty villages. Sweeping bends reveal huge cathedrals and tranquil abbeys.

There’s fascinating history to be found at every turn on your Seine river cruise. The spectacular Chateau Gaillard, a huge medieval castle completed in 1198 by Richard the Lionheart to defend Rouen from the French, is a reminder of ancient rivalries. Rouen itself, Normandy’s historic capital and one of Europe’s finest medieval cities, was where the legendary Joan of Arc was burned for her beliefs in 1431, with her ashes thrown into the Seine. There’s the magnificent Jumièges Abbey, consecrated in the presence of William the Conqueror. There’s only one place for your unforgettable Seine river cruise to end, and that’s Paris. From the imposing Arc de Triomphe to the grand Champs Élysées, from the iconic Eiffel Tower to the riverside Notre Dame, and from the stunning white Sacré-Coeur to bohemian Montmartre, Paris is everything you imagine it to be - and even more.

Understanding the Seine River Cruise Experience

What to expect on a seine river cruise.

Embarking on a Seine River cruise in Paris promises a delightful experience filled with breathtaking views and cultural insights. Whether you choose a daytime or evening cruise, you’ll marvel at iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Louvre Museum. Throughout the journey, you can relax on the deck, enjoy a gourmet meal, and immerse yourself in the city’s romantic ambiance. The cruise offers a unique perspective of Paris, showcasing its beauty from the tranquil waters of the Seine.

The Unique Charm of Each Season

Each season lends its enchanting touch to a Seine River cruise, providing a different ambiance and atmosphere. In spring, you’ll witness blooming flowers along the riverbanks, adding a colorful backdrop to your journey. Summer brings longer daylight hours, perfect for sunset cruises with warm breezes and open-air panoramas. Autumn paints the city in golden hues, offering a cozy ambiance ideal for a romantic cruise. Winter transforms Paris into a magical winter wonderland, where sparkling lights and festive decorations adorn the cityscape, creating a memorable holiday experience. No matter the season, a Seine River cruise promises a special and unforgettable adventure.

Factors Influencing the Best Time for a Cruise

Weather patterns in paris.

Paris experiences varying weather conditions throughout the year, influencing the ideal time for a Seine River cruise. In spring, temperatures start warming up, ranging from 50°F to 65°F, creating a pleasant atmosphere for cruising while witnessing the blooming flowers along the riverbanks. Summer brings warmer weather, with temperatures averaging between 60°F to 75°F, ideal for enjoying the outdoor deck and panoramic views of Paris’s landmarks under clear skies. Fall ushers in cooler temperatures, typically between 45°F to 60°F, painting the city in beautiful autumn hues, making it a cozy time to cruise and enjoy the crisp air. Winter in Paris can be chilly, with temperatures around 35°F to 45°F, providing a magical ambiance as you cruise past the city’s illuminated monuments in a winter wonderland setting.

Tourist Seasons and Crowding

The influx of tourists in Paris significantly impacts the best time for a Seine River cruise. During the peak tourist season from June to August, the city is bustling with visitors, leading to crowded cruises and popular tourist sites. If you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider cruising during the shoulder seasons of spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) when the crowds are thinner, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful and immersive cruise along the Seine River. Winter (December to February) also offers a quieter atmosphere with fewer tourists, presenting a unique opportunity to witness Paris adorned in festive decorations while cruising the serene waters of the Seine. Timing your cruise during these less crowded periods ensures a more relaxed and intimate experience to soak in the beauty of Paris from a different perspective.

The Best Months for a Seine River Cruise

Spring: blossoms and mild weather.

Experience the enchanting Seine River in spring when the city comes to life with blooming flowers and mild temperatures. It’s an ideal time for a cruise as Paris showcases its vibrant colors and pleasant weather. In April and May, the cityscape transforms into a picturesque landscape, providing a perfect backdrop for your river adventure.

Summer: Vibrant City Life and Long Days

Embrace the lively summer atmosphere along the Seine River as Paris bursts with vibrant city life and long sunny days. Summer offers extended daylight hours, allowing you to enjoy breathtaking views of iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral as you cruise along the river. The warm weather creates a lively ambiance, making it a popular time for tourists seeking an energetic Parisian experience.

Fall: Autumn Colors and Wine Harvests

In the fall, witness Paris adorned with stunning autumn colors and vineyards bustling with the wine harvest season. As the leaves change to rich hues of gold and red, the Seine River reflects the beauty of the season, creating a magical setting for your cruise. September and October offer a more peaceful river experience with fewer crowds, allowing you to savor the charm of fall in Paris amidst the serene waters of the Seine.

Winter: Festive Atmosphere and Fewer Crowds

Explore the festive atmosphere of Paris during winter while enjoying the tranquility of fewer crowds on a Seine River cruise. The city transforms into a winter wonderland with sparkling lights, Christmas markets, and a cozy ambiance that enhances the magic of your river journey. Cruising the Seine in winter allows you to witness a different side of Paris, steeped in holiday cheer and an enchanting atmosphere that captivates visitors seeking a unique experience.

Embark on a Seine River cruise during the best months tailored to your preferences, whether it’s the blossoming spring, vibrant summer, colorful fall, or festive winter, each season offers a distinct charm for your Parisian river adventure.

Events and Festivals Along the Seine

Major events worth planning your cruise around.

When it comes to planning your Seine River cruise, timing can make your experience even more memorable. Exploring Paris during specific events can enrich your journey. For instance, the famous Bastille Day celebrations on July 14th offer spectacular fireworks and festivities along the river. This lively event paints the Parisian sky with vibrant colors, providing a unique backdrop to your cruise.

Another event to consider is the Nuit Blanche, an all-night arts festival held in October. During this enchanting night, Paris transforms into a hub of creativity with various installations, performances, and exhibitions set up along the Seine. Imagine sailing past illuminated artworks and experiencing the city’s cultural vibrancy under the starlit sky.

Cultural Festivals and the Parisian Experience

Immersing yourself in Parisian culture through festivals can add a delightful touch to your Seine River cruise. The Fête de la Musique in June invites you to enjoy free music concerts across the city, including riverside performances that create a harmonious atmosphere as you sail past iconic landmarks. Join the locals in celebrating music and life on the banks of the Seine.

Additionally, the Paris Jazz Festival held from June to July brings soothing melodies to various parks, including those bordering the Seine. Picture yourself relaxing on the cruise deck as jazz tunes fill the air, enhancing the scenic beauty of the riverbanks. This festival offers a tranquil escape into the world of music amidst the bustling city.

By aligning your cruise with these major events and cultural festivals, you can infuse your Seine River journey with the rich tapestry of Parisian life, creating lasting memories and experiencing the city in a vibrant and dynamic light.

Tips for Booking Your Seine River Cruise

Considering cruise length and itineraries.

When booking your Seine River cruise, it’s essential to consider the length of the cruise and the itineraries available. Short cruises typically last a few hours and focus on major landmarks along the Seine, such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. On the other hand, longer cruises can span a day or more, offering a more in-depth exploration of Paris and its surrounding areas.

For a comprehensive experience, opt for a longer cruise that allows you to soak in the beauty of the Seine and explore hidden gems along its banks. Longer itineraries often include stops at charming villages, vineyards, and historical sites, providing a well-rounded view of the region’s culture and history.

Early Booking Advantages and Last-Minute Deals

Booking your Seine River cruise in advance comes with several advantages. By securing your spot early, you can often enjoy early booking discounts, access to preferred departure times, and a wider selection of cabins and amenities. Planning ahead also gives you the flexibility to choose specific dates that align with your schedule and preferences.

However, if spontaneity is more your style, keep an eye out for last-minute deals on Seine River cruises. While availability may be limited, booking close to the departure date can sometimes lead to significant savings. Be flexible with your travel dates and open to different cabin options to take advantage of these discounted offerings and embark on a memorable Seine River adventure at a lower cost.

Enjoying a Seine River cruise in Paris is a delightful experience that offers a unique perspective of the city’s beauty. By choosing the right time to embark on your journey, whether during the vibrant summer months or the festive holiday season, you can enhance your cruise experience. Remember to consider the length and itinerary of the cruise when booking to ensure you make the most of your time exploring Paris and its surroundings. Planning ahead can bring you benefits such as discounts and preferred schedules, while spontaneous travelers can also find great deals for a memorable adventure.
