Can my child travel alone on an Emirates flight?

Yes. You can book our Unaccompanied Minors service for children aged 5 to 11 who are flying alone.

We also offer a paid Unaccompanied Minors service for children aged 12 to 15.

We’ll be there to help your child enjoy a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey from check-in through to meeting their parent or guardian at their destination.

Children aged between 5 and 11 travelling alone will need to fly on an adult fare. This fare also applies when the child travels with an older child who is under 16, as they are not old enough to be the child’s guardian. Children up to 11 who are travelling in a different cabin class from their parent or guardian on the same flight will also need to fly on an adult fare. However, they will still be considered accompanied and will not have access to our children’s lounge and special services.

Children over 12 already fly on an adult fare and are able to fly alone without our Unaccompanied Minor service. However, for an extra fee, you can make a special request for the service for young passengers aged 12 to 15. The fee is USD 50 per young passenger for every leg of the journey.

Have a look at our Unaccompanied Minors page for more information about our service, or contact your local Emirates office where you can make a booking.

What if my child has a connecting flight or overnight transfer?

Connection times

If your child is transferring to another airline as part of their itinerary, the maximum connection time allowed at the airport is four hours.

If they’re transferring to another flight in Dubai, the maximum connection time is eight hours. This is because we have specialist members of our team to care for your child and we can only allocate them for this time.

Overnight transfers and unaccompanied minors

A child under 16 can’t fly alone if their transfer involves an overnight stay at the connecting airport or they need to travel between airports to get to their connecting flight unless you arrange for an adult guardian to meet and care for them at the transit point.

In both situations, you’ll need to confirm these details with us before we can accept your child on board.

Special assistance for children

If your child needs special assistance or specific care on their journey, they must be accompanied by a fare-paying guardian who is over 16 years old.

Find out more about our special assistance, accessible travel or medical services.

Terms and conditions

For safety and security, as a legal parent or guardian you’ll need to complete and sign a Declaration of Indemnity form before your child can fly with us. You'll find these forms at Emirates Airport Offices.

The unaccompanied minor’s parent or guardian must stay at the airport until the flight has departed. The parent or guardian collecting the unaccompanied minor at the airport must provide proof of identification. We offer our Unaccompanied Minors service only on our flights, and not with our partner airlines. Please contact the airline to find out about their services for children travelling alone.

French minors travelling outside of France

Minors with French citizenship who are travelling outside of France without their parent or legal guardians must carry an official authorisation to exit the country, in addition to their passport. The original authorisation must be presented along with a copy of the identification of the parent or guardian who signed the document.

Spanish minors travelling outside of Spain

Spanish minors under 18 years old travelling outside of the Spanish territory without the company of any of his/her legal representatives (parents or legal guardian /s), must carry in addition to passport, a signed declaration of travel permit outside of the national territory. The form may be obtained from the Spanish Police, Civil Guard, Courts, Notaries, Town halls or Consulates.

In the case of foreign minors in Spain for their Departure from national territory must carry the Passport of their respective State or valid travel document in force.

Regarding foreign minors resident in Spain or residents in another EU state please contact the Authorities regarding the applicable documentation.

For more information and queries please contact the Spanish authorities to ensure valid documentation in place.

Unaccompanied minors travelling to Canada

Air Canada doesn’t accept unaccompanied minors from other airlines. Therefore, if your child is travelling flying alone with us, you can book our Unaccompanied Minors service as far as Toronto. In Toronto, the child must be collected by their parent or guardian.

If your child is travelling to Canada alone, or with an adult with no legal custody over them, we strongly advise you to give them a travel consent letter. It must be signed by their legal guardian or a parent with legal custody. The letter should contain these details:

  • authorisation to travel
  • that their destination is Canada and the length of your child’s stay
  • the address and telephone number of the legal parent or guardian

Italian minors travelling outside Italy without an adult

There are special requirements for Italian children travelling alone outside of Italy. If your child is an Italian national aged up to and including 13, they will need to carry a letter of authorisation (a dichiarazione di affido) from the local police (questura) if:

  • they are travelling alone
  • they are travelling with someone who is not their legal guardian or parent (as identified in their passport)

If you live abroad, you can get this authorisation from an Italian embassy or consulate. The dichiarazione di affido can’t be issued by the airport police. Without this authorisation, your child won’t be allowed to leave Italy. This only applies to Italian citizens; all other nationals can travel without this authorisation.

Minors under 14 years old travelling to and from Vietnam

Children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children travelling with someone other than their parent or legal guardian must carry an authorisation letter from their parents.

Vietnamese children:

  • For arrival into Vietnam, an authorisation letter is not required
  • For departures from Vietnam, an authorisation letter is required. The letter must be certified by the local police or HCM Department of Justice

Non‑Vietnamese children:

  • For arrival into Vietnam, an authorisation letter is required. The letter must be certified by their local authorities
  • For departures from Vietnam, the authorisation letter is not required

Children travelling under our Unaccompanied Minors service are exempt, as the Unaccompanied Minors form is considered an authorisation document.

Travelling on other airlines

Each airline has their own restrictions and regulations on the unaccompanied travel of minors. If your itinerary involves travel on another airline, you should check the specific unaccompanied minors rules for that carrier before making your booking. These can include restrictions on the acceptance of unaccompanied minors when connecting to or from other airlines.

Please visit the Unaccompanied Minors page for more information, or contact your local Emirates office.

Are there special services if I’m travelling with young children or infants?

What are the rules and regulations for passengers travelling with young children and infants.

You can carry an infant under two years old on your lap. We'll give you an infant seat belt extension. You’ll need to secure the infant by using the infant seat belt extension during taxi, take-off, landing and whenever the seat belt sign is switched on.

A parent or guardian who purchased a seat for an infant under two years but does not have an approved car seat, must be reminded to hold, and secure the infant on their laps with a seat belt extension during take-off, landing, turbulence and whenever the seat belt sign is switched on.

If you’re flying with a child over two years old, you'll need to buy a child's fare and they'll have their own seat.

If you’re travelling with two infants, one infant must be carried on an adult’s lap using an infant seat belt whenever the seat belt sign is on. The second infant must be seated in an aircraft seat secured in an approved Child Restraint Device (CRD). The second infant will travel at the applicable child fare rather than the infant fare. Alternatively, both infants can be seated in aircraft seats. Similarly, three infants can travel with two adults if each adult carries one infant on their lap using an infant seat belt whenever the seat belt sign is on. The third infant must be seated in an aircraft seat secured in an approved Child Restraint Device (CRD). A child fare will apply to the third infant.

Note: An approved Child Restraint Device (CRD) includes either an aviation approved car seat or safety harness.

Using baby car seats on board

Infants who are assigned their own seats in the aircraft must be secured in a car seat or use a safety harness, known as a child restraint seat (CRS) or child restraint device (CRD), it must have a label to show that it's approved for use in an aircraft by:

  • Any Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA)
  • The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
  • Transport Canada

You must take full responsibility for fitting the device to the aircraft seat in accordance with the manufacturer instructions and aircraft policy:

  • A forward facing car seat, must be installed in a forward-facing direction.
  • If rear facing, it must be installed in a bulk head seat.
  • If a bulk head seat is not available, then it must be installed in a forward facing direction.
  • The seat belt must be easily accessible, though it must not be used to attach the infant into the car seat.
  • The aircraft seat back must be left in an upright position, in addition, the car seat table attachments (if any) shall be removed during take-off and landing.

Our cabin crew can assist by raising the armrests so that you can secure the aircraft seat belt to the car seat. They will also brief you on any safety requirements, and have the right to prohibit the use of car seats that do not meet policy standards.

Unfortunately, we can't accept car seats that need to be secured by a three-point seat belt or shoulder harness.

Safety regulations

If you bring a baby car seat to use on your flight, the check-in staff will check that it carries a label showing that it's approved for use on an aircraft, along with the instructions for use. We'll accept car seats that meet the following safety standards:

  • This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft.
  • This child restraint system conforms to all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards.
  • Seats approved to Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) No. 213 , 'Child Restraint Systems' , or CMVSS No. 213.1, 'Infant seating and restraint systems' .
  • Seats that meet European safety standards. These seats must bear orange labels marked ECE R44 04 (or 03) or ECE R129.
  • Seats approved for use in aircraft according to the German regulation 'Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft' (TÜV Doc.TÜV/958-01/2001) .
  • Seats that meet the AS/NZS 1754 Australian/New Zealand standards.

If your car seat doesn't meet these safety standards, you can check it in to the hold with your other baggage.

Restraint Harnesses / Devices for Infants, Children and Adults

We accept the following restraint harnesses/devices for travel:

  • CARES and Special CARES
  • Crellling/Houdini Model 27
  • Meru TravelChair
  • Leckey Firefly GoTo Seat

Please consult the table below for details on which cabin classes can accommodate these devices:

We do not provide these devices. You must contact your nearest Emirates Contact Centre at least 48 hours before travel as these devices can only be used on approved seat locations and in certain cabins.

If you require any additional support or assistance for your travel, you will need to complete the Medical Information form (MEDIF) our team can then assist you.

Limitations:

  • A responsible adult must be seated next to the passenger using the restraint harness/device.
  • The adult is responsible for fitting the restraint harness/device and for ensuring that the occupant is seated and secured correctly in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • The passenger’s seat lap belt must be fastened securely while the restraint harness/device is also in use.
  • We will only accept restraint harnesses/devices at the airport if all conditions have been met and we confirm that it is one of the accepted harnesses/devices from the above list.
  • When other airlines or code share airlines are involved in an itinerary, the regulations of the carrying airline are applicable. Please check with the carrier about their policies regarding restraint harnesses/devices before your flight.
  • If your CARES is over the maximum weight and height recommended for FAA certification, or if you are using CARES to connect to another airline, codeshare partner or US airline at an Emirates US gateway airport (including Athens International Airport and Milan Malpensa Airport), you will need to request an exemption for onward travel to or from the US from the FAA prior to your flight.
  • Being a foreign carrier, FAA certification is not applicable for use on Emirates flights. FAA regulations regarding child harness restraints do not directly apply to Emirates or our passengers. However, these limitations are covered in our GCAA approved internal risk assessment.

Baby bassinets

Whilst our bassinets are designed for babies up to two years old weighing up to 11 kg (24.2 lb), we won’t be able to provide one if your baby doesn’t fit safely (for example, if they have to bend their legs to fit into the bassinet). In First Class, our baby bassinets are 63.5 cm long and 28 cm wide (25 in x 11 in), while they are 74.93 long x 33.03 cm wide x 16.51 cm deep (29.5 in x 13 in x 5 in) in Business Class and Economy Class. Please note that bassinets are limited in number and subject to availability. Remember that you can't request a bassinet if you have booked a normal seat on child's fare rates.

Leg rests, seat extensions, ride-on suitcases, and sleepers.

Please note that children’s ride on suitcases or leg rest devices aren’t certified by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, and therefore aren’t permitted on board our flights. This includes – but isn’t limited to – devices by Bedbox, Fly Legs-up and FLY-Tot. You can get in touch with us for more information.

Leg rests and extensions

The use of leg rests, or any form of seat-extension device, is not permitted to be used on board. These items are not certified by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and pose a safety risk as loose cabin items. They include but are not limited to the below:

  • Fly Legs-up

You can take these items with you on board only if they are stored in the overhead lockers as regular carry-on baggage allowance, and are not used during the flight.

Ride-on suitcases

Ride-on suitcases are permitted to take on board  if they are only stored in the overhead lockers as regular carry-on baggage allowance, and not used during the flight . They must meet the size and weight requirements of your assigned carry-on luggage, and  must not be used as leg-rests or seat extensions . Ride-on suitcases include:

  • Kiddee Case

The only comfort device/sleeper permitted to be used on board an Emirates flight is the CoziGo (Fly Babee) as it meets the safety and risk standards required of the GCAA. The CoziGo may be attached to one of our baby bassinets for the duration of the flight only in Economy Class, Premium Economy and Business Class. You will need to reserve a baby bassinet prior to your flight. Please note, CoziGo is not provided by Emirates.

The following sleepers, and any similar device, are not permitted to use on board:

  • Cocoonababy
  • Kooshy Kids

What are the ticketing rules for child and infant passengers on Emirates?

Infants 0-1 year.

Tickets for infants travelling on the parent’s lap or in a bassinet are discounted from the full adult fare. When booking online, a request for a bassinet can be made in the Passenger Details section.

Infants less than seven days old will only be allowed on board in the case of travel for emergency medical reasons (in incubators) or if the mother is travelling on compassionate grounds.

Children in car seats

Children may travel on board in car seats as long as a separate seat is purchased for the child. Car seats can be used at any stage of the flight, including take-off and landing. The car seat must be the forward facing type only and one that can be secured to the seat by the use of the lap seatbelt, and not a shoulder harness (2-point seatbelt) as for car vehicles. Airport Services will approve the infant car seat at check-in for use on board.

Children 2-11 years

Tickets for children travelling in a separate seat are also discounted from the full adult fare.

Please Note: the Emirates Unaccompanied Minor service is not available in conjunction with a discounted 'child' ticket—a full adult fare must be purchased.

Please contact your local Emirates office to book an unaccompanied minor.

Children travelling in different class to the parents

Children between 5 and 11 years old who are travelling in a different cabin class from their parent or guardian are also considered unaccompanied minors and need to fly on an adult fare. They will only be considered accompanied if they are travelling in the same cabin class with a passenger over 16 years old. For the comfort of other passengers, we do ask that visits between cabins be kept to a minimum.

IMPORTANT: New information concerning infant bookings

Any person 2 years or older must occupy a seat when travelling on Emirates. Therefore, any infant who reaches the age of 2 after the commencement of the journey must pay the applicable child fare and is required to occupy a seat for that part of the journey.

Where a passenger travels as an infant on the outward journey and as a child on the onward/ return journey, applicable infant fare will apply for the outward journey and child fare for the onward/return flights. This cannot be booked online and should be booked through your local Emirates office .

Where a passenger is an infant but is 2 years or older on travel date at point of origin, the applicable child fare will apply for entire journey

If the above has not been done at the booking or ticketing stage, then check-in staff will arrange this at the airport on departure.

If seats are not available at the ticketing or check-in stage, the adult and child passengers will be booked together on alternate flights, subject to availability.

Should travel plans change while en-route and an infant turns 2 years old after travel has commenced the unused coupon(s) will be reissued at the applicable child fare for the rest of the trip and a seat will also be booked for all remaining flights.

IMPORTANT: Conditions of travel to Canada

Parents travelling to Canada with a child under 18 years old are strongly advised to hold documentation showing that the child is theirs. Parents who are separated or divorced are also advised to keep legal and other relevant documents in order to clarify custody rights.

Children travelling to Canada alone or with adults who have no legal custody over them are strongly advised to hold letter of travel consent signed by legal guardian or parent with legal custody. This letter should contain:

a. Authorisation to travel, and b. Destination in Canada, stating length of stay, and c. Signor’s address and telephone details.

How do I make arrangements for accessible travel or special requests?

Please contact your local Emirates office and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

Stress-free pet travel in the UAE: Essential tips and airline regulations

Living in uae.

Can I travel with my pet in the cabin, on UAE airlines? Here’s what you need to know

Pets stock

Dubai: Planning to go on a long vacation and want to take your furry companion along with you? The good news is that many UAE airlines, as well as international airlines that fly in and out of the UAE, allow pets to travel, either in the cabin with you or securely transported as cargo.

This guide will help you navigate the process and ensure an stress-free journey for both you and your pet for UAE-based airlines – Etihad and Emirates.

In-cabin vs. cargo travel

In-Cabin (Etihad only): Cats and small dogs (under 8kg including carrier) can travel with you on Etihad flights under specific guidelines. Cargo (Etihad & Emirates): Larger pets or those not meeting in-cabin requirements will travel as cargo or excess baggage, handled by the airline's professional teams.

Three things to do before you book

1. Check regulations : Contact Etihad or Emirates to confirm pet restrictions for your destination. Some countries may have additional requirements. 2. Vet visit schedule : Ensure your pet meets age requirements, has updated vaccinations, and a fit-to-fly certificate. Microchipping is also mandatory. 3. Gather documents : Prepare a health certificate, import/export permits (if needed), and proof of vaccination.

Stock pets

Traveling with your pet on Etihad (In-Cabin)

1. Submit a booking form: At least seven days before your flight, submit a form detailing your pet's information and travel arrangements. You can access the form on the Etihad website – etihad.com, under the ‘Travelling with Pets’ section. In this form you must provide the following details:

• Full name • Contact details – mobile number and email address • Flight origin and final destination • Flight number and booking reference/PNR • Cabin class • Date flight • Pet’s name • Breed • Animal’s date of birth • Stowage method – on seat or under the seat • Dimensions of the carrier (length, width and height) • Weight of the animal and the carrier in kg • Add any special instructions

2. Required documents: Along with the booking form, submit the necessary documents as outlined by Etihad. (These may vary depending on your destination).

Important reminders

Weight and age limits : Pets must be at least 16 weeks old and not exceed 8kg (including carrier) to travel in the cabin.

Carrier requirements : Your pet's carrier must meet specific size and ventilation requirements. Ensure it's comfortable for your pet to stand, sit, turn, and lie down.

Booking considerations : Choose your seats carefully when booking online. In economy, pets must sit in their carrier at all times, either under your seat or on an adjacent seat. In business, pets must sit in their carrier on an adjacent seat. They will not be permitted under your seat. Exit row and bulkhead seats are not permitted.

$1,500 (Dh5,509.20)

This is separate from the ticket cost that you will pay, if you are booking an adjacent seat. The cost is for a one-way trip. If you are transiting, this will be counted as two trips and the combined price will apply.

I’m travelling to Abu Dhabi, are there any rules I need to follow?

If Abu Dhabi is your final destination, you need to make sure the following formalities are completed before your flight:

Apply for an import permit for your pet – this must be included in the documents submitted to Etihad 72 hours before your flight. This permit is issued by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and if you want to know how you can apply for the permit online click here .

Apply for a UAE Health Certificate – this certificate must be signed and stamped by a government health official in your country of departure, within five days of your flight. According to Etihad, stamps from private veterinarians are not accepted. You can download this certificate from the Etihad website, under the ‘Travelling with Pets’ section.

Apply for an Abu Dhabi Customs Bill of Entry - this must be done no later than 48 hours before your flight. To do this, you must send the following documents and details to [email protected]:

· For UAE residents, a copy of your Emirates ID · For visitors, a copy of your passport · Import permit for your pet · Your mobile number · A copy of your reservation or ticket · Weight of the pet, including the carrier

Once you arrive, your pet will undergo an inspection by an MOCCAE veterinary officer, performed in the customs clearance area.

The Cargo Process (Emirates)

1. Contact Emirates SkyCargo: Book your pet's space on the flight and inquire about rates. You can find all the contact numbers on the website - www.skycargo.com.

2. Document submission: Send required documents (photos, health certificates, permits, etc.) at least 72 hours before your flight for approval.

3. Booking Confirmation: Once approved, you will receive details on pet handover and payment processes.

Documents required:

• Photos of your pet, in a natural standing position, inside his or her travel container.• Pet  passport with rabies vaccination records and microchip number. • Rabies blood test report (if applicable). • EU health certificate (for EU destinations). • UK annex I and IV (for UK destinations). • Import permit (if required). • A valid UAE MOCCAE Veterinary Health Certificate. • Acknowledgement form completed and signed. • Name, email address and mobile number of the receiver. • If you're travelling on the same flight as your pet, provide a copy of your flight confirmation. • If you’re using a clearing agent at the destination, provide their name and email address.

Depending on you pet’s breed, additional documents or pictures may be requested.

Travelling to the UAE? List of banned pet breeds

Booking Emirates Airlines Pet Travel

shipping your pets on Emirates airlines

We created a simplified guide below to help navigate these unique rules and booking processes. Read on to learn more about how to book your falcon (or other pet) with Emirates Airlines.

Accompanied Pets

Pets Traveling In-Cabin

  • Can your pet travel in-cabin with Emirates? Only if your pet is a falcon flying between Dubai and some locations in Pakistan or if your pet is a trained guide dog for the blind. Traveling with a different type of pet? Skip to step 3 .
  • 2. If you own a guide dog, please read these instructions on how to book your dog’s flight. To book your falcon in-cabin, please contact your local Emirates office  before traveling.

Remember that even though your dog will be traveling with you in the cabin, you’ll still need to follow the pet import requirements for your destination country.

Pets Traveling as Excess Baggage

3. Dogs, cats, falcons, and pet birds can travel as checked baggage in cargo, an addition to your ticket. There are no limits to the number of pets allowed on your Emirates flight as checked baggage. However, it’s important to be aware of any import rules restricting travel to unaccompanied cargo only or limiting the number of pets allowed to enter before booking your pet as checked baggage with Emirates.

  • The crate’s dimensions cannot exceed 118in or 300cm for excess baggage travel with pets.
  • Lastly, if your flight is longer than 17 hours, your pet must travel as unaccompanied cargo for safety.
  • If you have multiple pets who cannot travel together, a flight longer than 17 hours, a pet other than a cat, dog, or bird, or if you’re pet will be traveling to a country that does not allow excess baggage travel for pet imports, go to step 5 .

pet travel with emirates

4. Before booking your pet as excess baggage, you must find an IATA-approved travel crate for your pet to travel in. We have tips on finding the right travel kennel on this page of our website.

  • Contact your local Emirates office when you’re ready to book your pet as excess baggage. The pricing for pets traveling as excess baggage are:

Remember that even though your pet will travel with you as checked baggage, you’ll still need to follow the pet import requirements for your destination country.

Unaccompanied Pets or Pets Traveling as Cargo

  • All pets traveling as cargo with Emirates fly under Emirates SkyCargo . Traveling pets are offered the highest standard of care with SkyCargo through their special facilities (in Dubai) and dedicated staff members. SkyCargo’s processes and facilities were developed to make traveling pets feel safe and comfortable while providing their owners a stress-free experience.
  • 5. As with accompanied travel, your pet will need an approved travel crate to fly independently. If you’re having trouble finding one alone, Emirates has kennels available for purchase in Dubai and other locations. Check inventory before bringing your pet in for check-in to ensure the right-sized travel kennel is available for your pet.
  • To book your pet with Emirates SkyCargo, you need to contact your local office and ensure your pet will meet the necessary import rules for your destination. Please allow at least 4 business days for Emirates SkyCargo to process your request.

Health and Vaccination Requirements:

  • Emirates Airlines requires all pets to have a valid health certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian within 10 days of travel. The certificate must state that the pet is fit to fly, free from infectious diseases, and has been vaccinated according to the destination country's requirements. Some countries may require additional vaccinations or quarantine periods upon arrival, so it's important to research and comply with these regulations.

Restrictions on Breeds:

  • Certain countries, such as the United Kingdom, have breed-specific legislation that prohibits the import of certain dog breeds, including American Pit Bull Terriers, Japanese Tosa, and Dogo Argentino. Before booking your pet's travel with Emirates Airlines, make sure to check the destination country's import regulations and restrictions on pet breeds.

Pet Travel Insurance:

  • Consider purchasing pet travel insurance when booking your pet's travel with Emirates Airlines. This insurance can cover unexpected veterinary expenses during the flight, such as illness or injury. The cost of the insurance will depend on the pet's age, breed, and destination, so it's important to contact the airline for more information.

Temperature Restrictions:

  • Emirates Airlines may restrict pet travel during extreme weather conditions to ensure the safety and well-being of the pets. It's important to check the airline's policies and contact the local Emirates office for any weather-related travel restrictions. Additionally, it's important to provide proper ventilation and climate control for your pet's travel crate, and to avoid booking flights during extreme weather conditions.

Emirates Pet Policy

Emirates, denoted by its IATA code EK, offers comprehensive pet transportation services for your fur family members. Interestingly, the airline does not limit the number of pets that can travel in the hold on their flights. However, it's critical to keep in mind that specific countries might have their own restrictions on the number of pets imported or exported. It is recommended to confirm your pet's travel details directly with Emirates at (800)-777-3999 prior to your departure. If your journey involves other airlines, double-check their pet policies to ensure a smooth travel experience for your pet.

Emirates has a unique policy for pets in the cabin – only falcons traveling between Dubai and certain Pakistani destinations are permitted. Otherwise, pets are not allowed in the cabin on Emirates aircraft. For those pet owners whose itineraries start in Dubai and are traveling to countries permitting the entry of animals as excess baggage, falcons, cats, dogs, and pet birds can be transported in the hold as checked baggage. This service is contingent on the total journey time being less than 17 hours, and all other conditions being met.

The cost of transportation varies based on the weight of the animal and carrier combined. If the total weight does not exceed 50lbs (23 kg), the service costs $500. For pets weighing between 53 to 70lbs (24 to 32kg), the fee is $650. And if the weight surpasses 70lbs, the fee rises to $800. Pets can also be transported as cargo with Emirates SkyCargo or in the hold on certain flights. Fees for this service are determined similarly, based on the weight and carrier dimensions.

In the instance of two adult animals, each weighing up to 31 lbs (14 kg), they may share the same container if they are accustomed to cohabitating. It is worth noting that if your travel plans end in Dubai, animals must be transported as cargo. Carriers exceeding 118"" (300 cm) should be transported via SkyCargo instead, with the SkyCargo Team available at (+971) 600-566-661 for further assistance.

Whether traveling as checked baggage or cargo, carriers must meet international safety requirements, including secure locks, proper ventilation, and a robust structure. For pets under 50lbs (23kg), the total carrier dimensions should not surpass 59 inches (150 cm); for pets over 53lbs (24kg), the dimensions can range between 59 inches (150cm) and 118 inches (300cm).

Please keep in mind that Emirates can revise these policies at any time. Hence, it is crucial to always confirm directly with the airline for the most current and accurate pet transportation information before booking your flight.

Emirates Pet Travel Policies

When planning to fly with your pet on Emirates, knowing the Emirates Pet Travel Policies is pivotal. Emirates stands out for its comprehensive approach, ensuring your pet’s comfort and safety throughout the journey. First and foremost, it’s imperative to understand that Emirates only allows pets to travel in the cargo hold, with the exception of falcons on certain routes. This means your furry friend won’t be able to accompany you in the passenger cabin.

The booking process for pet travel on Emirates requires careful attention. You must book your pet’s travel no later than seven days before your departure, but it’s advisable to start this process as soon as your travel plans are firm. Remember, Emirates has specific breed restrictions and does not allow certain breeds that are considered dangerous or are known for breathing difficulties.

Required Documentation

Before you embark on your journey, ensuring you have all required documentation is crucial. The necessary paperwork generally includes:

  • A valid health certificate from a licensed veterinarian, issued within seven days of travel
  • Proof of all required vaccinations, specific to your destination
  • An import license or permit if required by your destination country

Failing to comply with these documentation requirements can result in your pet being denied travel, so double-check with both Emirates and the destination country’s regulations well in advance of your trip.

Preparing Your Pet

Preparing your pet for their journey in the cargo hold is vital. Invest in an IATA-approved travel crate that’s spacious enough for your pet to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably. Familiarize your pet with the crate weeks before your flight to reduce stress. Also, ensure your pet is well-hydrated and has a light meal several hours before the flight.

Understanding Emirates’ pet travel policies and preparing accordingly ensures a smoother experience for both you and your pet.

Factors Affecting the Cost

When planning to fly your pet on Emirates, it’s crucial to understand that various factors will influence the overall cost. These elements ensure that your pet travels comfortably and safely, but they also affect how much you’ll need to budget for the journey.

Size and Weight of Your Pet stand out as primary factors. Emirates charges for pet travel based on the total weight of your pet and its crate. Bigger pets requiring larger crates will incur higher costs due to the increased space and weight accommodation in the cargo hold.

Destination and Distance are also important. Longer flights generally mean higher fees. This is because longer distances require more fuel, and the airline has to account for the additional care and handling your pet may need during extended travel periods.

Type of Pet : While Emirates is known for allowing falcons in the cabin on certain routes, most pets will travel in the cargo hold. But, the species of your pet can influence the price. Some animals may require special accommodations or handling due to their specific needs or regulations surrounding their transport.

Season and Time of Booking : The time of year can significantly affect the cost of flying your pet. Peak travel times, such as holidays and summer months, often come with higher fees due to increased demand. Also, booking your pet’s travel well in advance can sometimes offer cost savings compared to last-minute arrangements.

Finally, Regulatory Fees can add to your expenses. Depending on your destination, you might face additional costs for health inspections, quarantine (if required), and other regulatory compliance fees. It’s essential to research and account for these potential fees when budgeting for your pet’s travel.

Before booking, take the time to consider these factors carefully. Planning and researching can help manage costs and ensure a smooth trip for your beloved pet.

Additional Charges for Pet Travel

When flying your pet on Emirates, it’s crucial to look beyond the base rates. Several additional charges can significantly affect the total cost of your pet’s journey. Being aware of these can help you budget more effectively and avoid any surprises.

Health Certification and Vaccinations: Before your pet can board their flight, they’ll need a clean bill of health. This means visiting the vet for a health certification and necessary vaccinations. The costs for these services vary but are essential for your pet’s travel.

Pet Crates: Emirates mandates specific crate dimensions and requirements for pet travel. If you don’t own a crate that meets their guidelines, you’ll need to purchase one. The price of pet crates depends on the size and quality, with larger, airline-compliant models being more expensive.

Airport Fees: Various airports impose their own fees for pets passing through, both on departure and arrival. These fees can include handling charges and customs clearance, which vary by location.

Quarantine Costs: Depending on your destination, your pet may be required to undergo quarantine. The length of the stay and the associated costs differ significantly between countries.

To manage these additional expenses effectively:

  • Consult with Emirates: Early consultation can provide specific details on required crate specifications and any additional airline fees.
  • Check regulations early: Understanding the pet import regulations of your destination country well in advance will give you ample time to prepare for potential quarantine or additional health requirements.

By anticipating these charges, you can prepare more effectively, ensuring a smoother trip for both you and your pet.

Cost Breakdown for Different Pet Sizes

When considering flying with your pet on Emirates, understanding the cost breakdown for different pet sizes is crucial. Emirates categorizes pets either by weight or crate size , affecting the overall cost significantly. This section will provide you with a detailed overview to help you budget effectively for your travel.

For small pets, including cats and small dogs weighing up to 8 kg (including the crate), the cost is relatively lower. You’re required to ensure that your crate size adheres to Emirates’ stipulated dimensions to avoid any additional charges.

Medium to Large Pets

Pets that fall into the medium to large category, generally weighing between 8 kg to 32 kg, will incur higher fees. The size of the crate, as well as the weight, plays a pivotal role in determining the final price. It’s vital to select a crate that provides enough space for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

Extra-Large Pets

For extra-large pets weighing over 32 kg, specialized arrangements need to be made. Not only do these pets require larger crates, but the logistical aspects of handling and loading them onto the aircraft also contribute to the cost.

These costs are estimates and can vary based on your specific travel route, the time of the year, and the complexity of handling requirements. It’s best to contact Emirates directly to get a precise quote for your pet’s travel.

Remember, additional charges such as health certification, vaccination, airport fees, and potential quarantine costs can also affect the final expenses. Planning and consulting with Emirates early can help you navigate these additional costs more effectively.

Traveling to Specific Destinations

When deciding to fly your pet with Emirates, it’s crucial to understand that costs can vary greatly depending on your destination. Regulations and fees are not uniform across countries, and this can significantly impact the overall expense of traveling with your pet.

For example, flying your pet to a country with strict quarantine regulations might add a considerable amount to your budget. These countries often require pets to undergo quarantine at the owner’s expense, which is an additional cost on top of the flight itself. Preparing for these requirements involves understanding the specific documentation, vaccinations, and possibly even breed restrictions that could affect your travel plans.

Key Destination-Specific Factors :

The product builds on Emirates SkyCargo’s existing capabilities to transport pet animals on its flights and offers new features such as door to door transportation as well as booking return flights for pets.

With Emirates Pets, the entry level solution, Emirates SkyCargo will offer airport to airport transportation for pets across the carrier’s network of over 160 destinations.  The owner of the pet will be responsible for completing all the required paperwork and clearances needed for the transport of the pet from one country to another.

In addition, Emirates SkyCargo has also entered into a partnership with Snoopy Pets, a leading pet relocation service provider based out of Dubai, to offer a new premium door to door transportation service, Emirates Pets Plus, across 16 markets. Under its premium service, the complete logistics of transporting the pet, including filing all the required documentation, taking the pet for any required veterinary checks and transporting the pet to and from the airport, will be managed by Snoopy Pets on behalf of the customer and Emirates SkyCargo.  The markets where this service is available are Bahrain, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, UAE and UK.

With Emirates Pets and Emirates Pets Plus, owners wishing to take their pets with them on extended holidays also have the option of also booking a return flight for their pets with Emirates SkyCargo.

In the last two years, Emirates SkyCargo has transported over 11,000 domestic pets - mostly dogs and cats on its flights. Close to 60% of the animals flown have either started or ended their journey in the UAE. Nearly 3,000 pets have travelled to the UK over the same time period with the air cargo carrier.

Emirates Pets has been designed keeping in mind the safety and comfort of the pet and offers special features including track and trace of the shipment, late cut-off time for pet acceptance at origin, dedicated animal care areas at Emirates SkyCargo’s hubs in Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC), temperature protected transportation on the ramp, special handling facilities worldwide as well as availability of veterinary care on a 24*7 basis. Emirates Pets’ robust animal welfare oriented processes have been developed in compliance with the conditions outlined in the IATA Live Animal Regulations (LAR) to ensure that pets are well cared for throughout their journey.

Subway Strays: The Dogs of Moscow’s Metro

pet travel with emirates

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, the stray dogs in Moscow have a surprisingly well-documented history which animal behaviorists have been paying close attention to for several decades. During the Soviet period in Russia the packs of wild (or stray) dogs in were regulated. Only the clever canines who learned to stay in isolation were able to survive. Usually, these dogs would remain on the outskirts of the city hunting in wild packs, as the living in the city was dangerous and food scarce.  After the fall of the Soviet Union quality of life in Russia began to slowly improve and with it more street vendors and food collecting in busy neighborhoods. This began to bring some the stray dogs out of the suburbs into the city.

Today, there are nearly 35,000 stray dogs that call Moscow home. Out of these 35,000 stray dogs there are about 500 that have taken to living underground. Out of these dogs, there are a few that have started thinking outside the box and inside the boxcar. They have begun the slow move underground to stay out of the cold (Russian winters reach an average of -5 degrees every day). Many of the Russian commuters embraced the dog’s underground migration by petting them or giving them food.

Though these claims may seem like the made up type of internet misinformation that we have learned to be skeptical of these days, it is actually sourced to a Russian biologist by the name of  Dr. Andrey Poyarkov , a highly regarded scientist in his field of study. As it turns out Poyarkov has been studying these dogs for the last thirty years and told news sources back in 2010 that he suspected a small fraction of these underground dogs had actually learned to use the subway in order to beg for food in bustling urban areas where food is more plentiful.

Andrei Neuronov , an animal behaviorist, says much like you train your dogs at home to respond to verbal commands like “sit” or “stay,” the Moscow metro dogs are using audio cues from the subway stops they have learned. The dogs memorize the names of the stops to navigate the subway systems in order to take them to heavily populated places during the day and get food.  Then, they return to their more secluded corners of the suburbs at night where they are less likely to be bothered by people.  Here is a story ABC did back in 2011, talking about this very thing.

Do you have any information on how to help these dogs?  Please share and comment below.
