man cycling in Scotland with lake and mountains in the background

A wonderful trip, the route was well planned & avoided busy roads where possible. This was a fairly relaxed ride, the cyclists naturally split into slow, medium & faster groups with regular stops for photos, to refuel and regroup. Darren & Paul looked after everyone and every detail, good food & accommodation etc, which meant all we had to do was pedal! If you want to do LELOG I would recommend Pedal Britain. Pete (2019)

Two people stood in cycling gear having picture taken.

LEJOG with Pedal Britain has been an amazing experience. Both concerned that as relatively new cyclists we may struggle to complete the tour. Darren and Paul put us at ease and supported us all the way. An absolutely brilliant two weeks. I would definitely recommend Pedal Britain to anyone considering this adventure. Dave & Sharon (July 2018)

Great routing throughout, with fantastic team to lead and support every day, including medical and technical difficulties. They provided anything you required/liked for snacks. Best cycling adventure I’ve ever done. Carol (June 2019)

"The route took me to places I'd never been too, taking in the country lanes and using cycle routes to avoid main roads. I thought it was excellent. This tour far exceeded my expectations. The whole group gelled together and the team couldn't have been more supportive and encouraging" Jersey Boys (June 2019)

Cycling is a great way to explore Norfolk & Suffolk, and when you add a beautiful rolling landscape and a network of quiet country lanes you the have the perfect place to get those pedals turning!

For the last 21 years our families have been cycling the byways, tracks and lanes of Norfolk & Suffolk, in the process we’ve discovered numerous ruined castles, deserted beaches, wonderful village inns, amazing children’s attractions and a wide collection of fascinating places to explore. And because we don’t have any serious hills in this lovely part of England everyone can cycle our routes – even if you’ve not been on a bike for years!

Using our own experiences we’ve developed a unique range of cycling tours that explore the very best bits of Norfolk and Suffolk. All our routes follow quiet country lanes to search out and discover a wealth of interesting places each day – you can also choose between different route options and while you travel ‘light’ on one of our modern touring bikes all your luggage is transported to your evening destination – usually a comfortable country hotel or a high quality bed and breakfast.

So whether you want a 2 day Family Adventure or a 6 day Coastal Exploration we’re sure we have something to suit – and don’t forget we’ve cycled all these routes ourselves so just give us a call if you want to discuss options or talk about any aspect of our tours.

Hoping to see you soon,

Martin, Phil, Mick and the UK Cycle Holiday Team

If you want to check availability, options, costs or have any other questions about our cycling breaks then please just give me a call or send me a note and I'll get back to you asap.

The 11 Best Cycling Routes In The UK

best cycling tours uk

With restrictions finally being lifted across the UK, it’s time to dust off the cobwebs, get back on two wheels, and see some sights again.

If you want to start planning a few cycling routes but aren’t sure where to go, we’ve got you covered. Here’s our selection of the 11 best cycling routes in the UK in 2021.

Table of contents

1. Snowdon, Wales 2. Tremadog Bay, Wales 3. Essex Rivers, Essex 4. The Severn Valley Country Park, Shropshire 5. The South Downs Way, Hampshire to Sussex 6. The Cheshire Cycleway (Route 70), Cheshire 7. Kirkaldy to Dundee via St Andrews, Scotland 8. Longniddry to Haddington, East Lothian 9. Trans Pennine Trail, Central UK 10. The Jurassic Coast, Dorset 11. Isle of Wight

1. Snowdon, Wales

best cycle routes uk

If you want to see high peaks, impressive mountains, and glass-clear dark lakes, a circuit of Snowdon using the Llanberis Pass is just the ticket. This route will provide you with picture-perfect views of the Welsh countryside’s trademark visceral beauty and tranquillity.

There’s a stunning 10-mile mountain bike route that starts in Llanberis, Snowdonia and climbs the Llanberis Path to Snowdon’s summit before returning down the same track.

This route is perfect for mountain bikers looking to trek up steep boulder trails that’ll provide a rigorous test of their riding skills.

However, it should be noted that Snowdon’s steep trails are popular with walkers and cyclists alike. Therefore, caution and awareness of your surroundings are especially paramount.

The Snowdon Voluntary Cycling Agreement outlines clear rules that cyclists must follow. They must not ride on three of the bridleways (Llanberis, Snowdon Ranger, and Rhyd Ddu paths) to the summit between 10 am and 5 pm from May until the end of September every year.

Although this may seem inconvenient, an early cycle to see the sunrise will give you the serotonin boost you’ve been missing.

2. Tremadog Bay, Wales

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Huw Rees Lewis (@huw_harlech)

Tremadog Bay is where the rocky hills of Snowdonia meet the sea and coastal breeze. So, if you’re craving a coastal view, this is your best bet.

Not only does Tremadog Bay host some astonishing sea views, but the roads around the Cader Idris provide some of Snowdonia’s best cycling routes.

The views from the bay stretch far and wide. You’ll see the medieval Criccieth Castle standing proud over Tremadog Bay, the Llyn Peninsula , and the mountains of Snowdonia.

3. Essex Rivers, Essex

Essex Rivers is a great route for those who want the gentler, more scenic bike rides. If you’re a busy Londoner wanting to escape frantic everyday life in the capital, this is the route for you.

Within this area, you can also visit the Flagship Country Park for plain sailing – it’s ideal for those looking to cycle with family.

The River Colne is a small river that runs through Essex and passes through Colchester. This has an estuary that joins the sea near Brightlingsea.

The Crouch to Blackwater tour is a circular, 22-mile-long route that goes through the villages of North Fambridge, Althorne, Latchingdon, Mundon, Maldon, Purleigh, and Cold Norton. Being able to tick off so many destinations and sights would provide any cyclist with a real sense of accomplishment.

4. The Severn Valley Country Park, Shropshire

The National cycle route 45, known as The Mercian Way, provides the perfect cycling route for families or groups with younger riders.

The journey crosses the River Severn itself, and there’s a park situated at Alverly along the river between Bridgnorth and Bewdley. Along the journey, there’s a visitor centre with a children’s play area.

Cyclists can follow the main pathway through the park, which is part of the cycle route. This runs through Hampton Load, partly off-road, and continues to Bridgnorth along the roads.

Once you’ve completed your ride, you can take a moment to relax and sample wonderful views from inside the visitor centre. Or you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in the cafe .

While you're there, it's worth heading to the Severn Valley Railway station, another popular tourist attraction. The steam-hauled passenger train travels for 16 miles along the beautiful Severn Valley, running through Kidderminster, Bewdley, and Bridgnorth.

5. The South Downs Way, Hampshire to Sussex

The South Downs Way is an off-road, undulating mountain bike route teeming with history and picturesque sights. Although it runs through quite busy parts of the country, including the city of Winchester and the suburbs of Brighton, you’ll still sample plenty of countryside and feel like you’re getting away from it all.

On this route, you’ll discover woodland, farmland, rivers, and historical landmarks. You’ll either start or end in Winchester, where you’ll find Winchester Cathedral – the largest cathedral in Europe.

Along the route, you’ll find the Queen Elizabeth Country Park , a large area of beautiful mixed woodland that’s perfect for a break or picnic. You’ll also cycle past the eastern tip of the South Downs Way. Here, the hills meet the sea with a great white bow of rock at Beachy Head – a beautiful location that’s calling to be photographed and taken in.

Beachy Head is the highest chalk cliff on the South coast, and its wide-open land and sea views will take your breath away. It’s rumoured that, on a clear day, you could even see the border of France.

The 160km journey along the South Downs Way is the only UK's National Trail that’s fully navigable by bike.

In addition to the South Downs Way, there’s 1,200 km of car-free bridleways across the National Park that you can take advantage of.

There are also miles of leafy country lanes and old railway trails you can explore, including the Downs Link , Meon Valley Trail , and Centurion Way .

6. The Cheshire Cycleway (Route 70), Cheshire

The Cheshire Cycleway route was devised by members of the  Chester and North Wales CTC   – the national network of the UK’s largest and oldest Cyclists Touring Club. Therefore, you know it’s a route worth taking.

This route has a bit of everything, whether you want flat routes or exhilarating hills. There are backroads, rougher tracks, bridleways, canal towpaths and various sections of disused railway track to keep you on your toes.

The Cheshire Cycleway encompasses various tourist attractions but also provides miles of quiet roads. Tourist attractions include Lamaload Reservoir , the highest point on the Cycleway at 417 metres, and Parkgate , which was once a bustling port, later turned into a fashionable bathing spa.

The variety of terrain and the sheer number of routes leading from the main cycleway means that cyclists of all abilities can enjoy riding here. It’s just a case of choosing an appropriate area and mapping out your route before setting off.

7. Kirkaldy to Dundee via St Andrews, Scotland

best cycling routes uk

Known as the East Neuk 50 Cycle Route, this 50-mile route is one of Scotland's most rewarding bike rides.

It’s incredibly accessible compared to other routes in this list, as it starts and ends at train stations (Kirkaldy and Dundee, respectively).

It has one significant difference from other cycle routes, as it’s mostly segregated from other motor vehicles. This means you’ll be off the main road for much of the route, which follows cycle paths that were created as part of the project.

The journey was originally designed for tourists and allows visitors to take in the scope and beauty of the east coast of Fife, such as the stunning beaches and fishing ports.

The East Neuk was once the heart of the east coast of Scotland’s fishing trade. The tiny harbours along the East Neuk may now be home to more leisure boats than those landing lobster and crab, but the area’s fishing history gives it even more charm.

8. Longniddry to Haddington, East Lothian

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Julie (@julied.79)

Reachable by road or rail from Edinburgh, this is an easy cycle route that’s perfect for all cyclists. Along this route, you’ll see, Redhouse Castle , the 15 th -century tower house that can be seen from the railway station, and the Museum of Flight .

The route is mainly flat and not too hilly. As such, it’s a great option for beginners or those looking to ease into exercise after a long break.

If your journey starts at Longniddry train station, the start of the path is marked with a large sign announcing the distance to Haddington – roughly five miles.

Once you arrive in the town of Haddington, there are plenty of cafes you can visit for a bite to eat or a quick coffee to restore your energy levels.

9. Trans Pennine Trail, Central UK

best cycle routes uk

Everything that’s beautiful about the Pennines and its surrounding areas is evident in this cycle route.

The route’s central section starts in Leeds and runs to Chesterfield, the largest town in the UK.

Cyclists are advised to begin at the Royal Armouries, one of Britain's oldest museums situated along the River Aire.

Cyclist will travel for several miles along the traffic-free path next to the River Aire and the Aire Calder Navigation canal before the path connects to the railway path at Bottom Boat.

From here, you’ll continue to Rotherham, where you'll join the quiet roads into the Rother Valley and then move swiftly into Sheffield.

The Trans Pennine Trail leads directly into Sheffield's centre and out of it on cycle paths and quiet lanes.

A disused railway path takes you into Derbyshire. After travelling through Renishaw, you can either join the Chesterfield canal towpath or use the railway path and bridleways via Inkersall. Once in Chesterfield, make sure you visit the town's crooked spire church, which, rumour has it, the devil sat on to make it crooked. So, not only will you ride along an iconic route, you’ll witness a piece of supernatural history!

10. The Jurassic Coast, Dorset

You have plenty of options to choose from when you cycle along the Jurassic Coast.

From a gentle, tucked away ride to a faster-paced clifftop climb, this route offers something for everyone. Whether you’re getting mucky on an off-road hike or following a simple bypass, you'll be blown away by Dorset's exquisite and diverse scenery.

It's almost all rocky terrain with hills throughout the journey. This is certainly a ride that will work your quads and glutes if you feel like testing your strength and endurance.

Three routes explore the Jurassic Coast's history, geology, and wildlife:

  • Route one follows the cycle paths around Lodmoor Country park and Nature Reserve.
  • Route two is a longer route, leading into Weymouth Town Centre via its award-winning beach and 17th-century working harbour. This a perfect family cycle ride and picnic location.
  • Route three continues from Weymouth, joining the Rodwell Trail shortly before heading over to the Isle of Portland. Here, you can gaze at the many windsurfers, sailors, and kite surfers at this world-famous London 2012 Olympic water sports destination.

With wonderful coastal views, scenery, and historic landmarks, The Jurassic Coast has it all.

If you're in the area without a bike, there are plenty of bike rental shops to help you out.

11. Isle of Wight

From quiet villages to ocean and mainland panoramas, this route provides 62 miles of scenic joy. The relatively flat route is only accentuated by the Isle of Wight's peaceful charm.

There’s a range of cycling routes to suit everyone, whether you want to ride on challenging off-road paths or calming byways.

For the Round the Island Route, you can start from wherever is convenient. If you're starting at ferry terminals, the closest ones to the route are Yarmouth and Cowes.

If you're arriving on the Island via Ryde, it's easy enough to pick the trail up from Wootton or Nettlestone, depending on your direction of travel.

The Isle of Wight also hosts an annual cycling festival which is usually held in September.

Truly great holidays are hard to find but the traverse of Bhutan is one of them. If you only do one trip this is the one to do! I am incredibly proud of us all for completing the journey. We climbed to great heights, descended the longest road on the planet- bar none! Rode through rain forest and paddy fields, passed through scenery I will simply never forget. Thank you Bike Adventures for the journey of a life time..
Yippee we have finished. A brilliant ride made possible by the way you organised our accommodation and route plan. Thank you so much. Enjoying a well deserved pint.
First, a big thank you for a great experience.   The organisation was tremendous and everything appeared to work perfectly.   I shall remember the past fortnight with great pleasure for a long time.
Many thanks for all your hard work in making the Rhine cycle so enjoyable. You were most supportive and helpful – and fun! We loved visiting so many countries with their different scenery, architecture and wildlife – something for everyone!
Just to let you know we had a great holiday and were really impressed with the hard work and support which Phil, John and Kim put in on our behalf. So much so that I wouldn’t really consider a cycling holiday without Bike Adventures!
The trip down the Rhine was excellent….it was a rich experience. Could anything have been better?  I’m not sure that it could realistically.
Once again, thanks for putting on a great trip. There seems to be a certain formula that Bike Adventures has that works for us and clearly many others.
It was a really delightful treasure box of experiences doing the End to End with Bike Adventures, from- painful, tough, challenging, moving, exhausting, exhilarating, great fun and hugely inspiring.
Just to say again what a great trip the Tuscany tour was… Steve and Rob set just the right tone with the group and I hope they enjoyed our company…….I hope to come on another of your trips before too long.
It is safe to say that ‘Bike Adventures’ are awesome. It is great to feel like real mates with the whole team. Dom and Steve make you feel like a pro rider. Every need taken care of. Great routs, great support when needed, bags in the room when you arrive at the end of the days ride so you can get organised quickly…

Best cycle routes in the UK

1.  berwick to lindisfarne, northumberland.

Berwick to Lindisfarne, Northumberland

Total distance: 23.7km

Difficulty: Moderate – there’s a r ange of surfaces, from tarmac to hard-packed gravel, that can be hard-going when wet.

A brilliant way to take in the wild scenery, ancient landmarks, golden beaches and tiny harbour towns of the Northumberland coast, this linear route links up two of the county’s most renowned locations. Starting at the historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, make sure you take time to explore the ancient town’s Elizabethan ramparts and charming Georgian architecture before heading from the train station over the Old Bridge to Spittal where you pick up the coastal path. Hugging the cliffside you’ll speed by brooding views over the North Sea before joining the road again to pass through remote villages Cheswick and Goswick. From here you’ll reach the Holy Island Causeway where you can cross over to Lindisfarne when the tide is out.

Highlights: Looking out across the causeway to see the magical silhouette of Lindisfarne Castle is truly breathtaking.

2.  Torridon, Scotland

Torridon, Scotland

Total distance: 47km

Difficulty: Hard –  mountain bikes and overnight stops required.

Highland cattle, stone bothies and brooding mountains dotted with waterfalls: zoom past all this and more on this loop taking cyclists straight through the heart of the Scottish Highlands . Beginning and ending at Torridon village, a mixture of rocky paths and slick tarmac descents will take you past glistening lochs and remote wild swimming spots,  all in the shadow of three imposing mountain ranges . Some of the terrain is challenging, there are hard climbs up rough, rocky trails, but the loop ends in an easy, wind-whistling descent back to Torridon where the pub awaits.

Highlights: Annat Descent – a fast single track along a loch with sublime views.

3.  Bristol and Bath Railway Path, Somerset

Bristol and Bath Railway Path, Somerset

Total distance: 21km

Difficulty: Easy – almost entirely flat.

Connecting two of the UK’s most exciting cities, this smooth route follows an old train line through the  Avon Valley’s serene countryside. Created 40 years ago by volunteers as part of a pioneering project to link the cities, t he three-metre-wide tarmac path starts in Bristol ’s historic port and winds through the countryside, taking you underneath  Staple Hill tunnel (stretching over 500 yards). Rest your legs at the signal box cafe in Warmley and see working steam engines at the old train station at Bitton. The trail runs right through into Bath ’s centre. Take in the pretty spa town before cycling back, or returning via train if your legs are weary.

Highlights: Look out for colourful sculptures along the route, including a larger-than-life brick fish and a stone giant.

4.  Westminster Bridge to Box Hill, London

Westminster Bridge to Box Hill, London

Total distance: 42km (via Hampton Court Palace)

Difficulty: Hard – ‘Zig Zag Road’ was part of the 2012 Olympic road-cycling route.

Ditch the city for the verdant plains of Box Hill. Head out of London , past Hampton Court Palace and onwards into the green hills of Surrey . Box Hill’s ‘Zig Zag Road’ may be likened to peddling up the Alps, but it’s actually very doable. It climbs 120 metres, over a steady 1.6 miles, on a smooth tarmac road with amazing views.

Highlights:  The views from Box Hill – you’ll have earned them.

5.  Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, Yorkshire

Yorkshire Dales Cycleway, Yorkshire

Total distance: 209km

Difficultly: Hard – a multi-day trip for seasoned cyclists.

As proven by Tour de France’s visit to Yorkshire in 2014, the Dales makes fine cycling country and  this circuit around the Yorkshire Dales National Park takes in the best of it. Starting and finishing in Skipton, the rural road route zooms up into the wilds of the Dales with some steep climbs up its undulating hills. You’ll be rewarded with epic views over famous geological sites like Malham Cove – a staggeringly tall limestone cliff – and Aysgarth Falls, plus man-made marvels like Bolton Abbey. Take the route at a leisurely pace over five or six days. You’ll pass through plenty of Dales villages packed with traditional pubs and B&Bs to rest your weary legs: Burnsall, Settle, Wensleydale, Kettlewell, Bolton Abbey and Grassington are particularly charming. All in all, it’s a test of your cycling skills with eye-popping views and glorious countryside along the way.

Highlights: Stop for a pint at the Tan Hill Inn – the highest pub in Britain at 528 metres above sea level, and pause to take in the breathtaking views from the top of Low Sleights Road where the handsome arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct pop up among the rolling hills.

6.  The Camel Trail, Cornwall

The Camel Trail, Cornwall

Total distance: 19.5km

Difficulty: Easy – a level, traffic-free trail for all abilities.

If you’re after a cycle route with sunny coastal views and stretches through wild Cornish countryside, plus plenty of seafood spots, quaint seaside villages and heritage sites along the way, this should be your go-to route. Running the length of a disused railway line, once the Atlantic Express Rail Route from London to the West country, this flat, smooth trail is perfect for cyclists of any ability. The first, and most popular, section begins at picture-perfect Padstow and runs along the banks of the Camel Estuary – a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – to Wadebridge, taking in vast nature reserves and sea views. The second stretch is slightly more challenging, whizzing further inland to Bodmin (full of excellent pubs for a well-deserved break). If you’re feeling really adventurous carry on through to the quaint moorland village of Blisland right in the shadow of atmospheric Bodmin Moor.

Highlights:  You can’t beat a sunny day cycling beside the mudflats and salt marshes of the  Camel Estuary.

7.  Elan Valley Loop, Wales

Elan Valley Loop, Wales

Total distance: 29km

Difficulty: Hard – hills, hills and more hills.

Known as the ‘ Welsh Lake District’, Elan Valley is the perfect backdrop for a long cycle ride with remote trails that wind through craggy hillsides, along Victorian railways and past serene reservoirs. Starting in Llangurig, a picturesque village just north of the market town of Rhayader , head on to the remote hamlets of Cwmystwyth and Hafod, before readying yourself for the climb up to Ffair-Rhos where you’ll see sweet panoramas of the Cambrian mountains. From there, it’s a swift descent around the sparkling Claerwen reservoir, past Victorian dams and back to Llangurig.

Highlights:  The remote heights of  Ffair-Rhos and the dizzying descent to Claerwen reservoir.

8.  Big Ben to Richmond Park loop, London

Big Ben to Richmond Park loop, London

Total distance: 38km

Difficulty : Hard – expect steep climbs.

One of London’s most famous cycling spots, this rite-of-passage route starts on Cycle Superhighway 8 from Westminster to Wandsworth. Wind your way down the Thames, past Tate Britain and Battersea Power Station before joining up with the South Circular. From here, head down to the park and its 7.5-mile circuit. The clockwise route will have you huffing and puffing up the sharp climb of Broomfield Hill, while you’ll have the slightly flatter-but-longer Dark Hill to contend with if you opt for the anti-clockwise loop.

Highlights: Being able to drop that you’ve ‘done’ Richmond into conversations.

London-Wales-London by Audax UK

Audax UK — the national organisation for non-competitive long-distance cycle rides — reveals the route of one of its favourite rides: the slightly tongue-in-cheek labelled 'London-Wales-London'. This lanesy route from Chalfont St Peter, to Chepstow and back via Malmesbury, Lambourne and Henley is 400km is gently rolling with only a couple of tough climbs. It can be done non-stop in true audax style, but there's no harm in breaking it up into stages either.

Bealach na Ba loop by Lee Craigie

Lee Craigie is part of  The Adventure Syndicate , a  Cycling UK affiliated group . It is a collective of female endurance cyclists whose aim is to increase levels of self-belief and confidence in others (especially in women and girls) by telling inspiring stories, creating an encouraging community and delivering enabling workshops and training. Here's one of her favourite loops in the Highlands taking in the iconic and challenging climb of Bealach na Ba that starts at sea level and rises to 626m in 9km.

Isle of Wight by Jack Elton-Walters / Cyclist.co.uk

As a native Islander, Cyclist.co.uk website editor Jack Elton-Walters knows the Isle of Wight is best seen from two wheels. Here he reveals his favourite route which will be slightly different to your usual loop. Possible at a push in one day, break it up over two for a relaxing ride that takes in the best of one of the UK's sunniest spots.

The Hebridean Way

The Hebridean Way stretches from Barra to the Butt of Lewis and has it all: stunning white beaches, dramatic mountain landscape, flat boggy landscape, great and bad weather, standing stones to rival Stonehenge at Callanish, otters and of course Harris Tweed. A multi day route with only one significant climb, it would make a great introduction for those wanting an accessible but isolated cycle tour.

Devon Coast to Coast by Josie Dew

Coast to coast rides are justifiably popular in the UK, and here cycling author and Cycling UK vice-president Josie Dew reveals a coast-to-coast with a difference: across the beautiful county of Devon which she tackled with her young family (who she forgot to tell about the hills).

A spectacular week in Aberdeenshire, Moray and the Cairngorms

Gary Cummins is the Vice Chair of Cycling UK Scotland and leads tours for CTC Cycling Holidays and Tours. The route covers the often-overlooked northeast of Scotland including Dundee, Angus, Moray and Aberdeenshire. It’s suitable for fit cyclists who are willing to keep going at a steady pace and don’t mind climbing, descending and possibly challenging weather including headwinds. It takes in a mixture of roads, but most of the busier roads are on the first and last sections of the trip.

Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG or End to End)

Cycling from Land's End to John o' Groats is also known as doing the LEJOG or the 'end to end' is Cycling UK's most iconic route. Here we have two routes, the first is 971 miles and is aimed primarily at those wanting to the route relatively quickly. The second at 1024 miles is the original End to End YHA Route that was created many years ago when Youth Hostels were far more prevalent. This route stays very close to the original however there are some points along the way where you are no longer able to stay at a YHA and alternative accommodation would need to be sought. It is not the fastest route, but takes in quieter roads and as many hostel locations as possible.

C elebrating 14 Years  of  Land's End to John O'Groats  tours in  2024!

What our customers say:

Only one word to describe the tour, leaders and organisation…FABULOUS! Hamish and Niv were very thoughtful regarding the group’s needs and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to all – would book again with you and hope to in the future.

Very well organised and all of the information provided in advance. I had questions that were answered really quickly. This was my 3rd trip with Peak Tours.

Great tour, well organised. Our guides Niv and Hamish were first class.

Loved the days through the hills in Bavaria.

The route was excellent. Really enjoyed the scenery, especially Dartmoor, The lakes and Cairngorms. Lots of quiet country lanes, mostly traffic free. The size of the group was just right and enabled smaller groups to be formed, so people could ride at their own pace.

All of our Guided Cycling Holidays include accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, route notes and tour information, certificate and full tour support which includes at least one experienced guide who will act as bike mechanic, tour guide and will provide luggage transfers, brew stops and  help to organise evening meals etc. Generally most tours have three guides with two back up vans and a guide who cycles with the group. Most groups are made up of singles and couples or twins (two friends together). The minimum number is eight and the maximum 25.

With the Self Led Cycling Holidays we provide detailed route notes, maps, accommodation, luggage transfers, tour information pack plus bikes and all necessary equipment. You aren’t part of a group so can go at your own pace and you choose exactly which date you would like to travel.

Short Tours

With the Guided Cycling Holidays , starting with our shorter tours, we have the traditional Coast to Coast route from Workington to Tynemouth which goes from the Irish sea to the North sea from one side of England to the other. There are many “sea to sea” routes available and we also provide the stunning Way of the Roses tour from Morecambe to Bridlington through the Yorkshire Dales as well as the Hadrians Cycleway tour taking in the best of the Solway Coast and Cumbria . All three routes have their own charms and level of difficulty and traverse the Pennines or Northumberland which passes through some cracking scenery.

One Week Tours

New for 2018 were the introduction of two hugely popular 7 day tours.  The Classic Cols tour and A Week in Provence . The Classic Cols tour takes in some of the most spectacular climbs that the French Alps have to offer. The Telegraphe, Madeleine, Galibier and Alpe d’Huez to name but a few. The mileages short and the climbs and descents long, this is equally a spectacular introduction into alpine riding or a chance for seasoned climbers to have a full supported play on the slopes of some of the most (in)famous climbs in the cycling world.

A Week in Provence is designed to take in many of Provence’s highlights whilst also allowing time for relaxation and exploration if desired. We stay in each location for two nights, with a loop ride planned on the second day which you can always opt out of if you choose to relax in the sunshine or explore instead! Mt Ventoux  looms large on the agenda for the final day and anyone who wishes to attempt the climb will be fully supported as always by our guides and the magic brew van.

Longer Tours

If you want a bit of a longer challenge then our Mizen Head to Malin Head cycling holiday takes you from the most southerly point in Ireland at Mizen Head to the most northerly point in Ireland at Malin Head travelling along the stunning west coast of Ireland from south to north in ten days of rugged, magical touring along the best cycle routes this amazingly friendly country has to offer.

Our iconic Land’s End to John O’Groats or LEJOG tour can be taken over 14 days which is a challenge in itself but for those who would like a tougher challenge we also offer a 10 day Land’s End to John O’Groats tour which is not for the faint-hearted.  This classic tour is one we are extremely proud of and our fantastic route through the best of the British countryside and our customer testimonials speak for themselves.

Our epic Dover to Durness cycling holiday provides a refreshingly different perspective to the UK than on our LEJOG tour as you cycle from the south east of England to the north west of Scotland in some of the UK’s most dramatic scenery. The Dover to Durness tour is similar in length to the LEJOG tour but a bit harder as there are more hills along the way.  The reward for the extra effort on this adventure is simply some of the best cycling in the whole country, as we explore The Kentish Downs, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, The Peak District, The Yorkshire Dales, Dumfrieshire, the Scottish islands of Arran, Mull and Skye and on up the west coast of Scotland to a beautiful last few days in cycling heaven.

The Channel to the Med tour is our ridiculously popular French end to end cycling holiday which takes you through some of that country’s most stunning scenery along quiet country lanes and through picturesque towns and villages. From bucolic ancient villages, around the lazy Loire, through volcanic landscapes, old Roman settlements, “The Giant of Provence” Mt Ventoux, and the breathtaking Gorge de Verdon.  The Channel to the Med tour is stunning to say the least and, although a different kind of cycling on less steep roads than some we use in Britain, it is similar to our LEJOG tour in terms of difficulty. We also offer this tour in a 10 Day version for those looking to increase the physical challenge that little bit further!

Munich to Rome  is our latest addition to the 2 week tour family and we love it! The first few days of winding through the Tyrolean mountains take us into Austria and then Switzerland before crossing into Italy and heading south taking in yet more stunning scenery, fantastic food and beautiful architecture. We then work our way slowly further south, crossing the length of Lake Garda on a ferry and heading towards our rest day in Siena, one of the most ancient and beautiful cities in the world.  We continue on to finish the ride in Rome,  surrounded by breathtaking buildings, fantastic food and more cultural heritage than you could shake a large Roman stick at.

If you want something a bit more relaxing then we have our Germany & Austria Cycling Holiday or Moselle to Mozart tour . Germany is very underrated but makes a superb destination for cycling with miles of traffic free cyclepaths, stunning architecture and amazing scenery. The tour starts on the west side of southern Germany and finishes on the east side of Austria in Vienna passing through the UNESCO world heritage site of the “Wachau”, the wonderfully well preserved buildings of Bernkastel-Kues and the impressive, imposing, monastery at Melk to name but a few.

England Cycling Tours: the Best Self Guided Bike Holidays

Explore england on an affordable cycling holiday.

If you're a fan of active travel and want to explore England on a cycling tour, you're in the right place. Here we list our top picks for the best self guided cycling holidays in England.

On these unforgettable bike trips in England, you'll discover the beautiful rolling countryside, charming villages, authentic food and beer, and that warm, good natured hospitality that England is renowned for. Experience the Cotswolds, become immersed in the Isle of Wight, admire the coast in Cornwall or even ride the iconic Cyclist's Coast to Coast trail . The key advantage of a self guided bike tour is that you can cycle at your own pace and take the time to truly discover the hidden secrets of the country via England's back roads.

Without a doubt, these are England's best self guided cycling tours where you'll have a fantastic time.

Cornish Cycle Tour

Taking a break at Cape Cornwall

Discover the famous seaside region of Cornwall in England's south west on an incredible cycling holiday. Highlights of this bike trip include seeing shipwrecks, eating cornish pasties, hearing the history of pirates and visiting sheltered coves.

Explore Cornwall your way on this 9 day self guided Cornish Cycle tour . It's graded as moderate to challenging, due to some hilly parts, however the beautiful rivers, castles and gardens are a fitting reward to this great bike holiday.

Cotswolds By Bike Tour

Quaint little town of Guiting Power, Cotswolds | <i>John Millen</i>

If you're yet to experience England's gorgeous countryside, the Cotswolds by Bike tour is the right trip for you. Spend your days cycling between village pubs and old coaching inns. Along the way, you'll absorb the charming features of the landscape: churches, gardens, Roman villas, regency buildings, fords, and cottages - all cobbled together by the intriguing English history.

This is what A Worsley from Australia had to say about their trip:

"My daughter and I have just completed a self guided bike trip of the Cotswolds in England. What a fantastic experience, challenge and adventure the 8 days provided. The scenery was breathtaking and the townships we rode through were magnificent. All the accommodation was excellent with luggage always greeting us at our destination... Thoroughly recommend this adventure and thank you to UTracks for an efficient and comprehensive booking service."

The Cyclist's Coast to Coast Tour

Cycling along the Coast to Coast in England | <i>Andrew Bain</i>

While perhaps more famous as a walking tour, the Coast to Coast trail can also be completed on a bike as well. Also known as Wainwright's Way, the Coast to Coast route covers the breadth of England, from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Cyclists can ride this trip in just 6 fun-filled days as they cross from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.

This is a challenging, and overly satisfying, cycling trip. There's much to see, including the Cumbrian Lakes and Fells, the bleak Pennines, beautiful Dales and many warm and inviting inns to welcome you at the end of each enjoyable day.

As a fun fact, this route is nicknamed the C2C, which stands for Sea to Sea rather than the often-thought Coast to Coast! This is because riding the Coast to Coast follows a slightly different trail to the walking version .

Isle of Wight Cycle Tour

Stunning Freshwater Bay

This is a lovely short cycling tour that fully explores the Isle of Wight in just 5 days. Due to the island's largely flat terrain, this ride is graded as introductory to moderate, and allows for plenty of free time to explore as you wish.

The route starts in Ryde and circumnavigates all of the glorious coastal views of the Isle of White. Discover the estuary around Newport and the old town of Yarmouth, marvel at Queen Victoria's Osborne House and take the time to soak in the island lifestyle, half of which has been designated an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

England bike tours.

A visit to England offers a glimpse at its history and traditions through ancient villages, medieval castles, prehistoric structures and leading museums. Such history is set alongside the vibrant British culture, making it one of the most diverse places in the world.

While London attracts millions of visitors each year, cyclists treasure natural diversity beyond the city. Pedal through lovely meadows, hills and lakes dotted with quaint villages.

England also boasts coastal areas with cliffs and charming seaside villages. The rolling hills and a yearlong mild climate also make England a prime cycling destination.

“This was a life-changing experience...my first bicycle tour and my first time in either country. It was, in a word, amazing. A totally unique experience. Can't wait to do my next one!”

10 best easy cycling holidays in the UK 2024 (for families and beginners)

UK cycling holidays have a lot to offer, but it can be tricky to know where to start when you’re planning one. That’s especially the case when you’re looking for easy routes suitable for families or beginners.

But cycling holidays for families are some of the best UK holidays – you get quality time together, you stay active, and you can see a lot of sights. So it’s worth the effort in finding a good option!

In this article we share our pick of the best easy cycling holidays in the UK, with inspiration for some of the best areas and routes to consider. As a cyclist with two children myself, I also know firsthand what is important when it comes to finding the best family friendly UK cycling routes!

The regions and routes we’ve selected are:

  • Suitable as beginners cycling holidays or family cycling holidays in the UK
  • Suitable for road or gravel bikes (we’ve specified which in each section)

In the interests of complete transparency, we haven’t cycled all of the routes in this article ourselves. We would love to though! If you have ridden any of these, let us know in the comments below!

Read this for our pick of the best family cycling holidays in Europe .

1. Cornwall

Cornwall is known for its stunning scenery, fantastically fresh seafood, and beautifully weathered beaches. There are various disused railway tracks taking you between fascinating places, full of culture and history. For those with the energy, there are some challenging hills en route, but with the distractions around you, they’ll hardly be noticeable.

The Carn Euny route is filled with interesting and scenic riding, making the Kernow landscape a treat. You’ll pass a cairn at a Neolithic burial site before you weave your way through stone farm buildings in Brane. This is ideal terrain for beginners’ cycling holidays and families, as it’s a short route, full of adventure and artefacts surrounded by lots of opportunities for other activities.

The Devon Coast to Coast is an extremely scenic route, ideal for families and beginners to UK cycling holidays due to its lack of traffic. It’s also one of the better options for flat cycling holidays in the UK, so if the kids don’t fancy uphill rides, consider this route in Devon for your family cycle holidays.

The route combines countryside views, luxurious valleys, beautiful estuaries and marvellous beaches. It skirts along the edge of west Dartmoor, with increasingly beautiful views. It mainly follows a disused railway line with tunnels and stunning viaducts that take you past various historic sights, while allowing you to plan in rest days to take part in alternative activities.

3. The New Forest

Cycling holidays in the New Forest are popular with families and less experienced cyclists, due to the forgiving terrain and the beauty of the surrounding nature. The area is home to some of the best cycling adventures in the UK.

Beaulieu and Lymington are two of the prettiest villages in the New Forest, with village ponds, fine dining, sailing/yachting, and museums. They provide an array of activities for the best family cycling holidays, and indeed some of the best English holidays overall.

There are some great cycling routes to choose around the New Forest. The New Forest National Park cycling map is a useful starting point.

4. Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is a well-known holiday destination within the UK, that is known for being relaxed and sleepy.

You’ll find lovely quiet lanes and lots of unspoiled countryside. Nearly half of the island is designated an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,’ perfect for an easy UK cycling holiday.

The Round the Island route will take you through various villages and towns on the Island, allowing for numerous café stop options along the way. You’ll pass by the most exquisite and unspoiled beaches and countryside. It’s a great option for beginners wanting a relatively flat cycling holiday – but to be aware of some big hills, particularly in the south of the island! You can also easily split it up into a multi day ride.

Cycling the Military Road in south Isle of Wight, alongside a bright yellow field

Kent is densely packed with trails, sightseeing, quiet lanes and villages. It’s one of the absolute best places for cycling holidays in the UK.

There are great cycle-paths connecting interesting seaside towns and the vibrant green countryside. With so much to offer, there will be a route for you to find your perfect UK bike adventure.

The starting point for the Dover-Deal-Sandwich route is overlooking the busy docks, travelling into town toward Dover Castle where you can stop off to explore and take in its beauty. Once finished here, you will continue on a wonderful straight Roman road to Betteshanger.

This route is perfect for a family cycling trip in the UK or incorporating into a beginner’s cycling holiday, because the terrain is pretty flat and comprises a mix of byways, quiet lanes and cycle paths. Plus once you reach the seafront you can stop off for a spot of lunch in the lighthouse or that all-important ice-cream.

Of the options on this list, it’s one of the best for gentle cycling holidays near London, since you can get there in just a couple of hours by car.

Suffolk is a busy county with a full programme of summer events, from food festivals to music events and country fairs. Tie an event in with a wonderful easy cycling holiday through the beautiful countryside and you’ll have a glorious active time for the whole family.

This Dunwich and Minsmere loop is perfect for exploring the Suffolk Coast and the Heaths Area of Natural Beauty, taking you through Dunwich Forest and the attractive Westleton village, with its stunning thatched church.

7. Snowdonia

Snowdonia is an iconic National Park in Wales that is recognised for some of the country’s best cycling holidays for beginners, due to the extraordinary mountain scenery it provides, along with other activities you can take part in while staying in the area. While hardly flat, the roads are quieter which makes them well suited to family cycling tours.

The Mawddach Trail is one of the most scenic former railway paths in the country. This route runs alongside the striking Mawddach Estuary, below the foothills of Cadair Idris. It takes you along a former railway track from Dolgellau to the seaside town Barmouth, past truly breathtaking scenery.

8. Coast to Coast, Whitehaven to Sunderland

The Coast to Coast cycle route is one of the best known and most popular UK challenges out there. You can do it at whatever speed you like – the fastest cyclists will ride it in a day, but why not take your time and enjoy the multitude of terrains and scenery as you cross the country. Tradition also has it that cyclists on this route must dip their rear wheels In the Irish Sea and front wheels in the North Sea. Perceived wisdom is that this route is best ridden from west to east, so you can take advantage of the prevailing winds.

You start in Whitehaven, an old seaport on the west coast of Cumbria, with quiet lanes and striking scenery. You soon head into the Lake District and take on the fearsome Whinlatter Pass – a major mountain climb and a real challenge for any cyclist – but don’t forget, what goes up, must come down. There’s then some serious climbing in the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, before things get easier along the coast for the final section into Sunderland.

The route is a tough one, but if you are ready for some climbing and have got your fitness up it could make a first beginner cycling holiday in the UK, especially if you break it up into chunks. You’ll find some welcoming cycling hotels that are used to receiving cyclists.

Our cycling guide to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales

9. Northumberland

The Coast and Castles route is a much-loved route by many, not just cyclists: 192 miles from Newcastle to Edinburgh and 85 miles of it are in Northumberland. This is a route that will allow you to take on a grand tour on your bike with all the home comforts of the UK. This route takes in lonely beaches and beautiful sea views. It’s also dotted with exciting historical sites to spark your imagination, including some of the UK’s best castles – great for travelling with the kids.

It’s a great easy cycling holiday, with lots of options for accommodation throughout and ample fuelling stops within the villages and towns you’ll pass through.

View to Wynrose Pass

10. Hebridean Way, Scotland

The Outer Hebrides are a known magnet to cyclists, so it won’t come as a surprise to find that the Hebridean Way route is starting to become popular with UK guided cycle tours that can help with inconveniences like luggage. It’s perfect for those seeking a slower pace of life and quiet roads to ride on. You’ll spend your trip winding past windswept beaches, stone cottages and ancient castles, watching birds of prey playfully soar above you. This route will fill you with joy and fresh air while you take in the stunning turquoise seas.

Although the Outer Hebrides take a bit of getting to, once you’re there they’re a relatively easy UK cycling holiday. The exquisite location, peace and tranquillity are likely to also make them unforgettable. Spread this route out over a week or so and make the most of the fantastic pubs and restaurants.

What type of family ride? I’m not sure many young families would do some of those rides. Round the IOW – are you kidding ?

As ever, it will be a personal decision depending on the age of your kids and how much cycling they’ve done. What’s right for a five year old is somewhat different to what’s right for a fifteen year old. Also bear in mind that you can often easily split routes up into multi-day adventures.

10 of the UK's best train and bike adventures

Author Rob Ainsley shares some of Britain’s most remarkable rail and cycling routes

Joseph Branston / Our Media

Rob Ainsley

Trains and bikes go together like fish and chips, rhythm and blues, or Morecambe and Wise.

However, anyone who’s struggled to get their bike on a hook in those pesky bike cupboards on express services will know the train is often the joker of the two.

But when they work together, it can make for a memorable experience.

Cycling author Rob Ainsley has carefully selected 10 of the best routes in the UK, where you can ride first then relax on the train for the second section.

Most of these rail services are frequent and bike-friendly.

Heritage trains typically have cavernous old-fashioned guard’s vans for bikes (for a small fee), while national services take bikes for free (booking is usually required on inter-city trains).

Precise policies and prices vary by company, so check online before setting off.

With all of the trips that follow, there’s a bonus: the trains run almost parallel to each bike route, so you have flexibility to shorten your ride if you're cycling in heavy rain , you suffer a mechanical or you’re in a mixed-motivation group.

So here are 10 of the best British train and bike rides, in no particular order. See you in the buffet car…

1. Kent Coast Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Faversham to Dover

Faversham – Dover : 60 miles by bike | 45/90 mins on the train

This is a coastal and almost entirely flat sightseeing parade of high-character towns. Part of the Cantii Way, this is a ride to take all day over and stop often.

Britain’s oldest brewer (Faversham); fresh seafood stalls (Whitstable); art galleries (the Turner at Margate); Dickensian staircased alleys (Broadstairs); castles and cliffs (Dover), there's lots to take in.

Take a detour slightly south of Sandwich, near Ham village, for the celebrated direction sign saying ‘HAM SANDWICH’.

On the Southeastern train back, you can go inland (45 minutes) or back the way you came (90 minutes).

There are walk-on bike spaces on the train – you can’t take your bike on trains into London in the morning peak, but evenings are okay, and vice-versa out of London). Faversham is just over an hour’s train ride from central London.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44846981

2. West Somerset Railway

Rail trails for road cyclists - Taunton to Minehead

Taunton – Minehead : 25 miles by bike | 90 mins on the train

Britain’s longest heritage railway is a time-warp charmer, especially when steam trains are operating.

It runs for more than 20 miles alongside the Quantocks, between Bishops Lydeard and the seaside resort of Minehead, on the edge of Exmoor.

The complementary bike route is a laid-back trundle through rural West Somerset with a few mild climbs but lots of level stuff. It goes up from Bishops Lydeard into the Quantocks themselves on narrow lanes and then along a decent-ish gravel track with splendid views down over the west, and occasionally the east.

There’s a detour to Hurley Beacon’s panorama before a tarmac hurtle back down to the plains at Crowcombe and quiet roads again.

Snack at Watchet’s harbour market that inspired The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and head along the coast to Minehead’s expansive beach and dramatic headland (notorious Porlock Hill is just up the road).

Enjoy sandcastles, swims and ice creams before an afternoon train back to Bishops Lydeard.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44846738

3. Marches Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Shrewsbury to Hereford

Shrewsbury – Hereford : 70 miles by bike | 60 mins on the train

Wandering its way down the lush, hilly Wales-England border country from Chester to Newport, the Marches Line is a gentle gem of the railway network.

You could cycle along its whole course in three days, but this central section makes for a substantial day's workout on cosy lanes, through sleepy villages and orchards (welcome to cider country).

Shrewsbury’s Victorian-class riverside has coffee kiosks to set you up for the lanes to the ‘Little Switzerland’ of Church Stretton and its surprisingly alpine climb over the Long Mynd’s moortops.

At foodie town Ludlow you can admire olde-Englande architecture from your restaurant window. After Leominster’s half-timbered satellite villages comes Hereford.

Take in the statue of composer Edward Elgar with his bike. Regular TfW trains back have walk-on bike spaces, but on Arriva Trains’ special ‘Gerald’ services the fine-dining theme continues: they claim Britain’s best onboard eating. Bon appétit …

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44847761

4. North Wales Coast Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Chester to Llandudno

Chester – Llandudno : 60 miles by bike | 60 mins on the train

‘The Welsh Lourdes’ (Holywell), San-Francisco-like trams (Llandudno), Britain’s smallest church (St Trillo’s at Rhos) and smallest house (at nearby Conwy), plus a smooth, 20-mile, car-free promenade to ride along: photo opportunities abound.

You’ll start from historic delight Chester, and the long, flat waterside stretch between Prestatyn and Llandudno, via Rhyl (with ‘bike hub’ cafe-shop) and Colwyn Bay, is perhaps Britain’s best seaside cycle route.

Its climax is the Great Orme headland, with stiff climbs and awesome views – and those trams.

Enjoy Llandudno’s faded Victorian elegance. Just be aware that the TfW train back (with walk-on bike spaces) can be packed.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44848348

5. Settle to Carlisle Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Kirkby Stephen – Settle

Kirkby Stephen – Settle : 40 miles by bike | 45 mins on the train

The Settle to Carlisle railway line, forced through the Yorkshire Dales in which everything is a bridge, viaduct, cutting, tunnel or embankment, regularly tops lists of Britain’s most scenic train journeys.

Mighty Ribblehead Viaduct is a calendar-image staple; red squirrels scamper at lofty Garsdale Head station and Dentdale views amaze first-time passengers.

The ride is an eventful, vertically challenging, but visually delicious romp through the Dales and past the Three Peaks.

Easy, scenic B-road stuff gets you to the drama of Ribblehead. After vast Dentdale, you grapple with the infamous Coal Road that vaults the hills to Garsdale Head.

Relatively flat valley bottoms lead to rugged Kirkby Stephen. After that, savour your cinemascope National Rail train ride back to Settle.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44855591

6. North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Rail trails for road cyclists - Pickering to Whitby

Pickering – Whitby : 30 miles by bike | 120 mins on the train

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway scythes 20-odd miles between Whitby, Grosmont, Harry-Potter-station Goathland and Pickering.

It’s a time-travel experience, with period-film set stations, steam locomotives, jolly volunteer staff and unchanging landscapes (except perhaps for Fylingdales' radar station).

The cycling’s all quiet remote lanes, climbing to purple moortop views, then descending to hidden green valleys. From Whitby, a riverside lane ducks under a huge viaduct before bounding over the hills to Grosmont.

A car-free road rises and falls to Beck Hole’s pub, untouched since the 1930s; in nearby Goathland (home of 1960s-set TV series Heartbeat ), you’ll still be checking what year it is.

Remote-feeling tops get you to the market town Pickering. The last train back to Whitby harbour, and Britain’s best fish ‘n’ chips, is mid-afternoon.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44855414

7. Hope Valley Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Sheffield to New Mills

Sheffield – New Mills : 40 miles by bike | 50 mins on the train

The northern Peaks make for one of Britain’s most underrated ride-through ranges. It's a natural sculpture park of gritty tors, ridges, peaks and troughs, and 'how did they build that?' heritage infrastructure.

You’re soon out of busy central Sheffield on a long straight climb onto the wild tops. Back lanes clamber through landscapes linked with Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë and Robin Hood.

Test yourself on the side-plunge down, then back up Bamford Clough: Britain’s steepest signed tarmac climb, at 37 per cent.

Enjoy the wide splendour of Edale before a bizarre loop down Winnat’s Pass to Castleton, then back up and out via the shattered remains of the A625 on Mam Tor, the mountain that ate a trunk road.

Fuel up in New Mills, an industrial-heritage town, before your train ride, with walk-on bike spaces, to Sheffield.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44855223

8. Borders Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Melrose to Edinburgh

Melrose – Edinburgh : 55 miles by bike | 60 mins on the train

A rare victory for rail fans over Dr Beeching, whose controversial ‘streamlining’ of the railways saw this line close in 1969, among countless others.

In 2015, the Borders Line reopened (from Edinburgh to Tweedbank).

Britain’s newest line passes rugged Arthur’s Seat before rolling across the Borders region, where the towns often still have a charmingly 1960s feel.

For dramatic pacing, this trip is best done out from Edinburgh Waverley on a morning train (walk-on bike spaces) and ridden back.

From Tweedbank lanes, go to Innerleithen, with its bike-friendly cafes, where a quiet, narrow B road rises up a valley.

You go through suburbs, sometimes on smooth bike paths, to sneak into Edinburgh from the east, past Duddingston Loch, round Arthur’s Seat then past the Scottish Parliament building.

Route: ridewithgps.com/routes/44864129

9. Hadrian’s Wall Line

Rail trails for road cyclists - Carlisle to Newcastle

Carlisle – Newcastle : 70 miles by bike | 100 mins on the train

As coasts-to-coasts go, this ride – roughly following NCN72’s Hadrian’s Wall route – is pretty easy.

It’s mostly flat, only getting really lumpy round the areas of Once/Twice Brewed and Vindolanda, where the Wall itself is at its photogenic (and touristy) best.

There's no Sycamore Gap tree now, of course, but the long downhill from there to Hexham on a straight, smooth, very quiet lane is a joy to experience.

You'll also get Roman-border atmosphere aplenty, some fine scenery, hearty cafes, and visitable towns in the rugged, dark-stoned buildings of Carlisle, Haltwhistle and Hexham.

With two days available, you could do the whole Wall at leisure, starting at Bowness west of Carlisle, and finishing at Wallsend east of central Newcastle.

However you do it, that direction is best: those westerlies can be as robust as the views.

The train, being a Northern service, takes walk-on bikes. They’re usually flexible about theoretical maximums of two cycles; just as well, as you’ll probably be sharing this scenic and leisurely journey with C2C riders.

Rail trails for road cyclists - Fort William to Mallaig

Fort William – Mallaig : 45 miles by bike | 85 mins on the train

This is not a regular service, in any sense: there are only a few trains a day, but it’s also unusually spectacular.

The epic viaduct at Glenfinnan features on £10 notes and in Harry Potter .

From start to finish, this is a full-scale visual experience of lochs, rivers, forests, glens and mountains.

Even better, it’s one of the most bike-friendly trains in Britain, with two dozen spaces (it’s free, but best to reserve a place beforehand).

The cycle ride, tracking the line pretty closely, is thrilling too, not vertiginous, though for several miles on an A road. In the Highlands, there’s often no alternative, but the traffic isn’t too bad.

Cycling up the coast to Mallaig has a pioneering feel – and you needn’t stop there because ferries run to Skye and other islands.

Gravel adventurers might fancy additionally riding the 45-mile rugged tracks of the West Highland Way between Tyndrum and Fort William the day before – that stretch of line is Britain’s remotest, wildest train journey.

Intrepid travellers cycling the Athabasca River near Jasper in Canada

No big bus windows. No phone screen. No maps, walls or guidebooks. Just your wheels, the wind and the open road. That’s how we roll.

From pedalling through peaceful villages in  Vietnam  and  Japan  to cruising down epic, ever-changing landscapes in  Jordan  and  Tanzania , our cycling tours allow you to really immerse yourself in a place and not just travel through it. Powered by nothing but your legs (and maybe a slice of biscotti and a couple of extra-strong cafés au lait), there’s a nice simplicity to cycling as well as plenty of adventures waiting for you off the saddle. Intrepid style cycling isn’t the Tour de France – you don’t get prizes for coming first and the lycra bodysuits are definitely optional – but we promise it’s a totally unique way to experience the world.

On most of our trips we use hardtail mountain bikes armed with front suspension. Depending on the country, we’ll use a mix of makes and models like Giant Talon and Trek X Caliber 5, but they’re pretty similar when it comes to form and function. Our bikes are serviced regularly by local experts who know their stuff, and any pesky broken chains or flat tyres can be fixed in a jiffy. You can usually bring your own bike, too (check our FAQs for the logistical info).

Riding a bike is good for you (even factoring in the odd gelato or Tuscan cellar door pitstop). But it’s also good for the environment. Like all our trips, our cycling tours are 100% carbon offset. Most of the transport is powered by the greenest energy of all: yours. We’ve been certified as the world’s largest travel B Corp, which means when you choose Intrepid, you’re travelling to improve the planet.

There’s something special about Intrepid travellers. You travel differently; you travel with purpose; you seek to leave a positive impact and give back to the people and places you visit. By travelling on an Intrepid cycling trip, you’ll directly support our  Intrepid Foundation cycling partner, World Bicycle Relief . Donations provide school children, health workers and farmers in rural low-income communities with durable bicycles, research and mechanics training.

We run risk assessments on all our cycling trips and our leaders are specially trained to run cycling adventures, so you can rest assured you’re well taken care of. Our leaders are also trained in basic first aid, and we’ve got a support vehicle that follows the group in case of injury, inclement weather, unexpected and hazardous road conditions, or if you’d like to give your legs a rest.

The beauty of small group travel means our groups are small enough to allow you to ride at your own pace, but big enough to connect with others and create a good social vibe. Our maximum group size is 12 people, which we’ve found is a great number to let you get to know your fellow cyclists and also benefit from your leader’s knowledge and experience.

We think the best folks to show you around the heart of a destination is someone who lives there. That's why we work exclusively with local cycling leaders, which means you’ll really get to know the places you’ll be visiting. Our leaders are not just cycling enthusiasts, they’re also your travel guru, teacher and enthusiastic purveyor of local experiences.

Our local leaders are all cycling junkies, but they go through some pretty rigorous training before being allowed behind the handlebars of an Intrepid cycling tour. Each leader has undergone on-road supervision and knows how to do safety checks, basic repairs and emergency first-aid. But they’re still regular Intrepid leaders, which means they know the best local bars, cafes and hidden spots (not to mention handling all the logistical stuff). You just focus on the ride.

One of my favourite trips is  Cycle Tuscany . We ride from the Apuan Alps down to the coast, followed by a dip in the Mediterranean and a picnic of fresh focaccia and tomatoes. We continue through rural villages, protected wildlife parks and sandy beaches all the way to the medieval jewel of the walled city of Lucca – and that's just in one day. Top tip for an Intrepid cycling trip: bring patience, an open heart and an open mind. Oh, and trust your legs!

What’s the range of cycling tours available?

Our cycling tours span the gamut of two-wheeled challenges: from a leisurely ride through Vietnam to cycling across landscapes of Cuba. Some of these trips include cycling as just one of a number of active adventures, others are more cycling focussed (ie. You’ll be riding almost every day).

Should I bring my own bike on a cycling trip?

To take the hassle out of preparing for your trip, we've included bike hire on all our dedicated cycling tours. Alternatively, you can bring your trusty bike from home. If you're bringing your own bike, make sure you let us know when booking so we can make sure your bike is appropriate for that particular tour. As always, check your Essential Trip Information.

Bringing your own bike  – If you are a dedicated cyclist or just want to take your bike on a holiday, you can usually bring it along for the ride. You’ll need to box it up for transport on the plane.

The easiest way to do this is to go to your local bike shop and ask if they will do it for you (a fee may apply). They often have boxes on hand from old stock and have the tools to remove the pedals and secure your handlebars.

Airline fees will also apply, so check with your airline about costs. It's worth remembering not all trips will be able to accommodate your own bike, so let us know what you're planning at the time of booking.

Hiring a bike  – The bikes we use are from proven brands, very well maintained, typically less than 3 years old (most are newer) and specifically chosen to suit the terrain you'll be cycling on the trip. They come in a full range of sizes from extra small to extra large and usually have front suspension, flat bars, and 27 gears.

The only thing you need to do is advise us of your height at the time of booking. We’ll handle the rest. If you'd like, you can always bring your own saddle (seat) or gel over-cover for comfort. If you want to use cleats, bring your pedals and shoes, too.

How do I fly with my bike?

All airlines will have their own rules and fees when transporting bikes. Make sure you contact the airline (preferably) before you pay for your flights to see what charges and requirements they have.

Before you depart, you must box your bike for transport. See our section ‘taking your own bike vs. hiring one’ for more information.

What do I have to carry while I ride?

On all of our cycling tours your accommodation is pre-booked and your luggage is transferred from one point to the next. All you have to carry is water, any snacks or gadgets you may want and a few layers to keep you dry and warm. A small, lightweight backpack may come in handy.

Do I need to pack anything special?

Helmets are compulsory on our cycling tours, so you can either bring your own or (to save on luggage space) buy one at a local bike shop once you arrive in-country. We also recommend you bring your own water bottle/hydration pack and closed shoes. You may also wish to bring Cycling shorts and (if you ride regularly at home) your own saddle and pedals. Many of our clients who do not ride regularly find a gel seat cover helpful in making the ride more comfortable. For more info on packing, check out the What to Pack section of your Essential Trip Information.

How fit do I need to be to do a cycling tour?

All you need to enjoy our cycling trips is the ability to ride a bicycle and a passion for seeing a destination on two wheels. That’s about it.

While there are occasionally longer days on some itineraries, the vast majority of our cycling days are between 30-60 kms and are done at a leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery or just take a break. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness will get by with no trouble. Be sure to check the physical rating and description in the Essential Trip Information to make sure the trip suits your fitness level and skills.

Our cycling trips are done predominantly on sealed roads (with the odd unsealed section), but none of the trips require any specialist cycling skills. We’ve also researched extra riding routes in each of the destinations we visit, so if you want to stretch your legs a bit more, you can.

My partner is fitter than me, should I still book this trip?

To make our trips more accessible for cyclists of varying fitness levels and skills, most of our trips will have a support vehicle that follows the group. You can jump into the support vehicle any time you feel like taking a short (or long) break from riding. Many of our cycling trips also include the option to use an e-bike, an electric motor-assisted bike that’ll get you up any hill or allow you to zip along the flats with minimum effort.

What sort of safety precautions do you take?

We run risk assessments on each and every one of our cycling trips to make sure they’re up to scratch and your cycling leaders have personally ridden every inch of the itinerary in advance. We’ve assessed the road conditions, the level of traffic and any potential blackspots.

Our leaders are trained in cycling health and safety, as well as basic first aid, and we usually have a vehicle following us if an evacuation ever becomes necessary. We’ve also made sure our cycling tours depart during the milder months when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold, so the ride should be as pleasant (and safe) as possible.

Do I need special insurance for a cycling trip?

Not as a rule. Any injuries you might suffer while riding should be covered by the more reputable comprehensive policies (we can recommend some good brands if you’re unsure of what to get). It’s always important to double-check the fine print before departing on your trip and be aware that, like all Intrepid trips, travel insurance is compulsory on our cycling itineraries.

23 of the best climbers at the 2024 Tour de France

  • Published on June 21, 2024
  • in Men's Cycling

The 2024 Tour de France is poised to be one of the most gruelling in recent history, with a route designed to challenge even the most seasoned climbers. Featuring numerous high-altitude finishes and iconic climbs such as the Col du Galibier and the Plateau de Beille, this year’s edition promises intense battles in the mountains. Climbers will need to excel to survive the race’s toughest stages, with the General Classification likely being decided in the high mountains.
